Three Hermann Sons junior members earn scholarships COMFORT – Three former campers have been selected to receive this year’s Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarships. They are Madison Dziuk, a member of Karnes City Lodge; Haley Miller, a member of Waco-Robinson Lodge; and Haley Trainer, a member of Lone Oak Lodge. Each scholarship is worth $1,000. Graduating high school seniors submitted applications, reference letters, their scholastic records and essays about how being a Hermann Sons camper helped to shape the people they are today. Madison Dziuk, daughter of Karen and Rodney Dziuk, attends Falls City High School and plans to study kinesiology at Texas A&M University at College Station. She wants to earn her doctorate in pediatric medicine. Madison has been involved in numerous organizations including band, cheerleading, FFA, UIL Academics and multiple athletic teams. She also volunteers regularly through
her church, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and has also spent two years volunteering with Christus Santa Rosa Hospital of San Antonio as a Child Life volunteer. In her essay, Madison shared: Camp was definitely a time to find yourself and make new friends. And, I took it in and treasured every moment! As I became older, I realized that I wanted to give back to this incredible organization, which had done so much for me! I found my time in this capacity to be the most rewarding as I witnessed other young girls embark on their own journeys. Hermann Sons Life is just that - LIFE! Through this amazing organization, I have grown up with HSYC, as it has been a huge part of my life. It has instilled in me a sense of purpose and established a commitment in all that I do, and I have become better prepared for the road ahead. As a result, I have gained the confidence to persevere in all my endeavors, and have acquired the knowledge to be an effec-
tive listener and leader. I will be forever thankful to HSYC, as it has influenced my career path to work with the medical needs of children in the field of pediatrics. I had never imagined that my life would be so significantly and positively changed by attending HSYC! As my college journey begins, I will forever be grateful for the memories and life lessons that have shaped me into the career-minded individual that I am today! Haley Miller, daughter of Paula and Trey Miller, is a senior at Waco High School where she will graduate as the valedictorian of her class. She will be attending Texas A&M University at College Station. She has already been accepted to the Mays College of Business Honors Program and plans on studying political science. Miller plans on working as a defense attorney or prosecutor once she has completed her studies. Throughout high See FORMER, Pg. 14
