The mission of CASA is to recruit, train and supervise court-appointed volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children and youth. “This year for Join Hands Day, we decided to give our members a chance

to support a really good cause - CASA and have a little fun doing it,” Grand Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger said in announcing the event. “I hope you will join us May 7 for what promises to be a great evening of fun and fund-raising.”

Cooks gather for annual cook-off in Comfort

Cooks and their teammates gathered at the Retirement Home in Comfort on March 12 for the annual Chili and Bean Cookoff. Proceeds from the event benefit the Retirement Home Scholarship Fund. In preliminary totals, it was reported that more than $6,500 was raised. Each year five scholarships are awarded to one student from each of the five Grand Lodge regions. This year the scholarship amount was increased from $1,000 each to $1,500 each. Pictured, top from left, are Heydon and Brennan Kelly enjoying some baseball - the Grand Lodge team’s theme for the day. A member of the Harmonia Lodge No. 1 team stirs a pot of stew prepared to keep the cooks from getting hungry. Dennis Krueger and Connie Spenrath were among the volunteer judges. Grand President's Message We need your help to make our voices heard As we all know, we are a very different kind of insurance company. From the beginning of our existence, our values have dictated the way we do business. And part of the reason we’re able to do so much good for our members and our communities is because the government recognizes the value of the fraternal business model by allowing the 501(c)8 premium tax exemption for fraternals. The future of this tax exemption is not guaranteed. If ever fraternals were not granted this exemption, then we would not be able to financially support all of our programs and services at the same level that we do today. The American Fraternal Alliance is taking an important step to ensuring the future of this exemption for fraternals for the foreseeable future by supporting House Congressional Resolution 19. This resolution reaffirms the value and validity of our business model. We need your help! Legislators need to hear from you. We can tell them about our 70,000 members, about our volunteer network and about the dollars we’re putting into communities, but actions always speak louder than words. We need you to send a letter to your representative. The American Fraternal Alliance has made it very easy to send a customized letter by going to raceto100.org. If you don’t have computer access, we can send a customized letter for you – just complete the form on this page and mail it to us so that we can send a letter for you. We just need your authorization! To date, almost 70 Hermann Sons members have sent letters. If each person reading this article takes just a few minutes to complete this form and mail it back (or go online and submit the letter), then imagine what an impact we could make! Hermann Sons represents about 10 percent of the fraternal member population in Texas, so our participation is critical. Here is an excerpt from the letters being sent: “As you know, fraternals help their members in many ways: our insurance products help members secure their financial futures and the proceeds from our financial services business fund a variety of member benefits – from college scholarships to financial literacy programs – and community service programs. Our volunteer efforts help fill the gaps in government programs by stocking food pantries, meeting medical needs, building playgrounds, and providing disaster "Hugs from Home"

Give us the name and address of someone who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and we will add them to our "Hugs from Home" list of care package recipients. relief, just to name a few. In 2014, fraternals across the U.S. and Canada provided over 106 million volunteer hours and donated $577,219,157 in direct charitable giving into their communities. The fraternal business model, and the fraternal tax exemption have allowed this important work to benefit families across the country.” This advocacy campaign is being called the Race to 100 because we are seeking 100 co-sponsors to this resolution. There are currently 75 co-sponsors. I sincerely hope that you will participate in this campaign and ask others to participate as well. We’re seeking action from supporters of the fraternal model in addition to members of fraternals. For more information, you can read my blog from Feb. 25 – just go to hermannsons.org and click on Blog in the Quick Links section. Fraternally, Buddy Preuss Grand President/CEO

As a member of Hermann Sons you are part of a fraternal family that provides life insurance, annuities and many fraternal benefits. Membership is meaningful and offers opportunities through the local lodges to meet new friends, work within your community on service projects and reach for more opportunities that enrich your life. YOUTH SPOTLIGHTS Registration information for Hermann Sons Youth Camp has been mailed to eligible junior members. Online registration makes it quick and easy to select that favorite Camp week. As in past years, a shortened Camp week will be offered for junior members who prefer to stay at Camp just a few days instead of a week. For more detailed information, please visit our website and click on the Camp link. The Schools of Dance are preparing for their annual recitals throughout the state. Check out the recital dates listed in this issue. Support your area school of dance and attend the recital. The dancers love a captive audience. It’s not too late to apply for the Retirement Home Scholarship if you are a high school senior. Deadline is April 1. Many local lodges also offer scholarships for their junior members. JOIN HANDS DAY May 7 is the date of Join Hands Day this year. Join Hands Day brings young people and adults together to make contributions to area communities. This day gives our organization and other partnering volunteer organizations the opportunity to reach out to people in need, to connect generations and develop new relationships. Join Hands Day is open to everyone – clubs, groups, businesses and individuals. Hermann Sons lodges have for many years made this day special through their many forms of community service. This year will be no different! A Casino Night will be held for the benefit of the Child Advocates of San Antonio (CASA) on Join Hands Day, Saturday, May 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Home Association Building. Tickets are $25 each and that includes dinner, drinks and games. There will be a live auction and other prize drawings during the evening. Tickets are available online and may be purchased through the Home Office. ONLINE INFORMATION Have you visited our Hermann Sons website lately? Help restore historical stained glass window SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons members and those interested in preserving history are invited to take part in a fund-raising campaign aimed at restoring a stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker located in the San Antonio Home Association Building in downtown San Antonio. The building is located at 525 S. St. Mary’s St. From 1911-1950 it was the home of the Grand Lodge and the eight San Antonio lodges. When the Grand Lodge offices moved next door in 1950, the San Antonio lodges continued to meet there and still do to this day. From the early pictures of the building to now, its focal point was a stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker located on one wall of the third floor ballroom. The stained glass window was painted by a 21-year-old named Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp, a talented artist who also created oil paintings. She lived to be 105 years old. Being more than 100 years old, the window is cracked and broken in several places. Its restoration is something that the Home Association’s board members have discussed for years but other maintenance items have had to take priority. “But as members, people who care about history and a group that takes pride in our ties to downtown San Antonio, the restoration of this window can have great meaning,” Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek said. “This is an opportunity for us to work together to restore this window and take pride in our group collaboration to accomplish it.” Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss added, “When Hermann Sons first started, members passed the hat to collect money for members in distress – we crowdfunded. In the spirit in which we were formed, we are crowdfunding to raise money for the restoration of this historical artwork.” A kickoff celebration for the fund-raising campaign will be held Friday, April 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the ballroom right in front of the window. Everyone is invited. Admittance is free and drinks will be available for purchase. “Morning Glories,” a framed lithograph of a painting by Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp, will be auctioned, snacks will be provided and project donations will be accepted. To make a contribution toward the goal of $10,000 needed to restore the window, go to the Hermann Sons website – www.hermannsons.org. Donations also can be mailed to: Hermann Sons Grand Lodge, P.O. Box 1941, San Antonio, TX 78297, Attn: Jennifer Cernosek. Make checks payable to Hermann Sons.

In 1911, Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp created the stained glass window depicting Hermann the Cherusker in the Hermann Sons Home Association Building at 525 S. St. Mary’s St. in San Antonio. She was only 21 years of age at the time.

This is the way the San Antonio Home Association Building looked when it was originally built in 1911. You can see the stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker in the center. It is located on one wall of the third floor ballroom. The window, now more than 100 years old, is cracked and broken in several places and in need of repair.

Comfort embraces construction of Altenheim COMFORT – More than 600 Hermann Sons members and other guests will gather in Comfort on April 23 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Altenheim – the Hermann Sons Retirement Home built in 1916 on a hilltop overlooking Comfort. Ticket holders are reminded that the gates will open at 11 a.m. A catered meal will be served from 11:30 a.m.1 p.m. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. After the program, a panoramic photo will be taken. The event will end at 4 p.m. During the day, guests will be able to tour the grounds and all three floors of the Home. Musical entertainment will be provided and free tea and lemonade will be served. As plans were being put together for the celebration, Helen Widner, a resident at the Retirement Home, went to the archives of the Comfort News that are in the care of the Comfort Heritage Foundation. The information that follows was compiled from reports printed by the newspaper. The idea for a home for the aged, widowed and orphaned was first proposed at the Grand Lodge Convention held in Austin April 21-23, 1913. Grand Secretary John Windlinger made the recommendation and delegates adopted the resolution. The site selection committee looked at locations in La Grange, San Marcos, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Austin, Boerne and Comfort. The citizens of Comfort campaigned hard to have the facility, considered the first of its kind to be built by a fraternal organization, erected in their community. The newspaper reported on July 11, 1913, in advance of a visit from the site selection committee, “If the streets of our town are free from weeds and trash, the sidewalks clean, and yards of the houses neat and well kept, the resulting impression is certain to be a good one, and will carry a helpful influence in turning the committee’s decision in our favor.” The site selection committee included Grand President August Haxthausen of Houston, Grand Secretary John Windlinger of San Antonio, Past Grand President C.J. Rosenberg of La Grange, Mrs. W.S. Schramm of Shiner, Mrs. Frederich of San Antonio, Paul Meerscheidt of San Antonio, Louis Scharck of Houston and Wm. Wiedenfeld of Comfort. Later that year a site near Comfort

was indeed chosen for the facility. The committee “called for plans for a building of rock and reinforced concrete construction, to consist of two stories and a basement, and to contain 50 bedrooms, 2 dormitories of 30 beds each, 1 office, 1 reception room, 2 sitting rooms, sick rooms, 10 private bathrooms and two large general bathrooms, an electric lighting plant, heating system and a water system. The whole building is to be of fireproof construction.” Arthur Hermann was the architect of the building, which was to be 260 feet long, 80 feet deep and three stories in height. The Jones Construction Company of San Antonio was the contractor hired to build the structure. Jones used local labor as much as possible during construction. It was October 1914 before “work began in earnest.” Weekly reports were printed in the Comfort News, keeping local residents apprised of how the construction was proceeding. According to those reports, bad weather was a factor during the construction but on Nov. 12, 1915, the newspaper reported, “The finishing touches are being put to the Hermann Sons’ Home and by the end of this week everything about the big institution will be completed. The electric lighting plant was put into operation last Saturday night, the lights being turned on throughout the entire building. This illumination made a striking effect when viewed from Comfort.” As completion of the project neared, a meeting was called “for the purpose of considering the idea of having an appropriate celebration in connection with the formal ceremony of dedicating the recently completed Altenheim building.” The citizens of Comfort openly embraced the idea of such a celebration and they formed committees to carry out each aspect of the event that was held Thursday, May 11, and was attended by an estimated 6,500 people including then Texas Governor Ferguson. The headline in the Comfort News the next day read “Comfort’s Greatest Day.” The story read: “Thursday, May 11, the day of Comfort’s most ambitious undertaking in the way of entertaining the outside world, dawned clear and The three photos above were taken during construction of the Retirement bright, and the weather throughout Home, which began in 1914 and was completed in 1915. These two photos were taken on the day of the Altenheim dedication in 1916. The photo on top was how the kitchen looked when completed in 1916. The bottom photo shows the dining room as it appeared in 1916. Looks like everyone was wearing their Sunday best for the big day.

Comfort residents helped plan 1916 celebration Cont’d. from Pg. 11 the entire day was so ideally perfect that Nature seemed to be doing her part, too, toward the success of the big celebration.” At 9:50 a.m. that morning a “special train, consisting of 14 coaches, deposited its hundreds of visitors at the station, a line of service cars was quickly put into motion and the people were whirled away to the grounds of the Altenheim where the barbecue was in readiness. So numerous were the service cars that the entire length of road to the Altenheim, a distance of a mile and a half, was dotted with them.” The report continued: “Sheriff Saner of Boerne,

whose reputation as a skillful barbecue of meat is well established throughout the county, very generously proferred his services several weeks in advance for the big job of barbecuing the 30 head of cattle which were used for the feast.” The meat was prepared in a 100-foot trench dug especially for the occasion. “The fires were started Wednesday evening and Mr. Saner and his assistants were busy all Wednesday night roasting the meat to that state of delicious tenderness and flavor which it possessed when served to the thousands on Thursday.” Each person received a plate containing barbecued meat, potato salad, pickles, bread and a spoon. The meal was served beneath the trees near

the river. After the meal everyone moved to the top of the hill for the formal dedication. There was music and speeches were given in German and in English. A plaque was unveiled and tours of the facility were offered. But the celebration wasn’t over just yet. Everyone returned to Comfort for open-air concerts and grand balls that did not end until after 9 p.m. The special train then returned its passengers to San Antonio. The newspaper’s account of the day’s event concluded: “Everything in connection with this celebration passed off smoothly . . . and (it will be) one that will linger long in the memories of the thousands who were Comfort’s guests on that occasion.”

Youth Camp shares tips for first-time families

By Katie Klohn executive Camp Director Often one of the barriers to coming to Hermann Sons Youth Camp the first time is homesickness. Not only is it common - it happens to every single person at some point. For some, it’s when their

parents leave the dorm on Sunday. Others might feel it when it is time for lights out on the first night. Sometimes the homesickness hits when a camper has an opportunity to try something for the first time, such as riding the zip line. Homesickness most often

happens because campers are stepping outside of what is normal and predictable to them. It is important that you plan ahead and set your camper up for success when they attend Camp for the first time. Here are some suggestions to help your first-time

camper have a positive experience at Hermann Sons Youth Camp. attenD open house on June 11 Open House is a wonderful time for first-time campers to become acclimated with their summer home. During

Open House counselors will be giving tours of Riverside and Hilltop camps. During the tour, visitors will be able to see where different activities are held, what a dorm looks like and where see Youth, pg. 17

Youth Camp shares tips for first-time families Cont’d. from Pg. 15 important places such as the office, clinic and dining hall are located. In addition guests at Open House can participate in several activities including archery, swimming, taking a ride on the zip line at the challenge course and playing a sport. You will want to bring your sneakers and a swimsuit with you so you do not miss out on all of the fun. In addition lunch will be served at both sites from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Have a Pre-CamP SleePover For many campers, Camp is often the first time that they are spending the night away from their parents for an extended length of time. A great way to practice for this experience is to have a sleepover at a friend’s house prior to Camp. This experience will help prepare your first-time camper for their stay at Camp. It is important that your camper has had an experience of getting ready for bed without you present before coming to Camp for the first time. let Your CamPer HelP in aCtivitY SeleCtionS During the registration process you have an opportunity to select the top 10 activities that your child would like to participate in. Involving your child in this process can be helpful in limiting homesickness. By allowing them to help in the decision-making process, they are choosing part of their Camp experience. This decision-making also will be helpful when your camper is attending their session and they have to make decisions throughout their stay. Send Your CamPer mail and leave tHem WitH letter Writing SuPPlieS One of the most exciting parts of Camp is when mail is passed out during rest and relaxation time following lunch. The easiest way to ensure that your camper has a note from home on a daily basis is to use the free one-way email that can

be accessed by using the login information that you used to register your camper for Camp. These emails are downloaded at 10 a.m. each day and placed with the mail for each dorm. Another great option is to bring pre-written letters and leave them in the office to be handed out each day. Some families also choose to leave small care packages for their camper for each day, but please remember do not include any food or candy. If you choose to use regular mail a suggestion is to drop your letter or letters in the mailbox at the post office in Comfort. If you choose to mail them from another location please remember that it will take time for the letter to arrive at Camp. It is also important that you leave letter writing materials with your camper so they can tell you all about their experience at Camp. The most efficient way is to send your camper with pre-addressed and stamped envelopes or postcards. Great people for your camper to send mail to are parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who aren’t at Camp. talk about CamP aS a FamilY Having a discussion together as a family about Camp is a great idea too. It is great to talk with your camper about what they are excited about as well as something they may be worried about at Camp. By having these conversations

answers to word search on Pg. 40

you can help prepare them for their new experience. If there are other children in the family who have previously attended Camp, include them too. They can share their favorite thing about Camp with the soon-tobe camper. ConSider tHe HalF-Week SeSSion If you or your camper are unsure about attending Camp for a full-week session, I highly encourage you to consider

attending the half-week session that will be held July 6-9 this summer. This is a Wednesday afternoon-Saturday morning session. Typically the halfweek session has fewer campers and it is jam-packed with excitement. This session also will include a full-camp carnival and dance, a model rocket launch and fireworks. Many campers who have attended the half-week their first year come back to Camp and

attend a full-week session the next summer. The half-week is a great way to let your camper get their feet wet with the Camp experience. Whether it is your camper’s first Camp experience or they are a fifth-year camper, we cannot wait for them to join us this summer. You can find more information about Camp and the summer schedule by going to www.hermannsons.org and visiting the Camp page.
