Walker named to new VP post SAN ANTONIO – Matt Walker, a 20-year employee of Hermann Sons Life, has been named Vice President of Information Technology, a new leadership position created by the Board of Directors at its January meeting.

Matt was previously the Director of Information Technology.

He joined Hermann Sons Life in 1996 as an IT contractor and was hired full-time in August 1997.

He has held the Fraternal Insurance Counselor designation since 2009.

He holds a bachelor of science degree in petroleum geology and computer science from Midwestern State University in

Wichita Falls. While in college, he received his private pilot’s license.

Prior to coming to Hermann Sons Life, he was self-employed in information technology in industries such as home improvement, telecom and retail. After college he gained IT experience across several industries, primarily oil and gas and home improvement.

Matt has two children. Son Jett is the band director at Bradley Middle School in San Antonio and daughter Laken is a music therapist in Houston.

A community of difference-makers Our members and their lodges recently gave to help the Sutherland Springs community.

Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger and Community Service Coordinator Laura Adams met with Pastor Frank Pomeroy of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs.

(See photo and story on Pages 1 and 3.) The check they presented was from members in communities across Texas. The effort was similar to that which brought help to the many affected by Hurricane Harvey last year.

It’s not uncommon for companies to contribute in time of need. It is different when the efforts are led by individual members. By being a Hermann Sons Life member, you are part of a powerful network. A network is an association of individuals formed to provide mutual assistance; it is an association of individuals having a common interest. One of the ways our network is set apart from others

is that our network – our community of members – is a group of difference-makers.

One of the biggest ways we make a difference is through our Camp Grief Support Session.

Last year, we were able to provide support to 40 children who are on a journey to emotional healing after the deaths of family members. They attended a half-week session at our Camp in Comfort where they participated in traditional camp activities like swimming, making s’mores and camp crafts along with therapeutic activities with licensed

therapists like group therapy circles and a symbolic lantern ceremony. Being a camp person, I know how beneficial the camp experience is to all children and am especially proud of our grief support program and its benefits to children.

Our network of differencemakers makes the Grief Support Session possible. The donations from lodges, individuals and affiliate groups; the member volunteers; the expertise of our Camp leaders; the relationship we have with the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas; and the dedication of our Board and Home Office to meaningful service initiatives are all part of the recipe to making a difference.

This month, a portion of our community of members will gather for a statewide event we’re calling “Leading with Heart.” At this event, we’re asking for donations for our 2018 Camp Grief Support Session where

we plan to support even more children in their grief journeys.

There is more need than ever for this type of service because of the many tragic events that have hit so many of our communities. “Leading with Heart” will have an educational component for lodge leaders and a social element, though I think what will be most meaningful will be the power of coming together that makes difference-making possible.

Invitations to our statewide event were sent to a limited group of individuals, but everyone can participate in making a difference. You can go to texashermannsons.org/donate to make a donation that will go towards sponsoring children to attend the 2018 Camp Grief Support Session. By being part of the Hermann Sons Life network, you are making a difference.

Members, lodges donate to Sutherland Springs church SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life members and lodges have donated $7,400 to the congregation of the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs as it continues to heal from the devastating shooting that occurred there in early November.

In February, Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger and Community Service Coordinator Laura Adams delivered a check to Frank Pomeroy, the church’s pastor.

He thanked them for the donation and told them that the church would be using the money to help members of the congregation who were injured in the shooting and are now returning home. He said some are in need of hospital beds for their homes while others need wheelchair ramps.

Kim and Laura also talked to Pastor Frank about the Grief Support Session that Hermann Sons Life Camp will be hosting this summer and the benefit it could have for some of the children in his congregation.

Donors to the church that have not previously been listed include Madeleine Long, Bill Bippert, Austin Lodge, San Marcos Lodge, Sharon Anello, Coupland Lodge and Kirby Lodge.

Chili, bean cook-off set for March 9-10 in Comfort COMFORT – It’s time to dig your favorite chili and bean recipes out of the drawer and dust off that pot .

The annual Retirement Home Chili Cook-Off and Bean Cook-Off are just a few weeks away .

The two cook-offs, scheduled this year for March 9-10, offer participants a good time for a good cause .

The good cause is the Retirement Home’s Scholarship Fund .

This year, once again, proceeds will be used to award five $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have been members of Hermann Sons Life for at least five years .

Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger encourages lodges to get a team together and head for the beautiful Hill Country for the weekend .

The fun begins with a cooks’ party at 6 p .m . on Friday featuring music, dancing, food and beverages .

The cooking portion of the weekend begins at 8 a .m .

Saturday morning when the cooks fire up their stoves .

Later in the day, the teams will do their best to entertain visitors with their showmanship acts .

Bean judging begins at 12 noon with amateur chili due in at 1 p .m . and CASI sanctioned chili judging beginning at 2 p .m .

Entry fees for the competition are $20 for CASI sanctioned chili cooks and $15 for amateurs . Bean cooks pay $10 to enter . The top three bean entries will win cash prizes . The top CASI cooks will be competing for points so they can advance to the International Championship Chili Cook-off in Terlingua .

Another aspect of the event is a drawing with lots of prizes to be won . Tickets will be for sale that day .

There is plenty of room for recreational vehicles to park on the lower level at the Home .

A final expense plan that covers more than the funeral

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing This past weekend I was cleaning a gun and had a problem with a certain part. Working on the tailgate of a pickup truck, the only tool I had readily available was a pocket knife. Prying on the part, the knife slipped and I cut my finger. The blood flowed and it was deep, so here I go to the local “doc in a box” to get it fixed up. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Thinking back on the situation, I should have been better prepared.

Life is like that. One minute everything is going along nicely, and then the next not so good.

Are you prepared for the unexpected occurrences that life has to offer?

This past month we mailed a postcard to more than 25,000 members over the age of 50. The

postcard outlines the features of our Senior Adult Final Expense Plan. This plan is designed to not only pay funeral costs, but to cover any need after the death of the insured. It also is a possible solution for those who, in their later years, may find themselves without adequate life insurance protection.

According to the annual Funeral Price Survey, the National Funeral Directors Association found that the average cost for an adult funeral in 2017 was $8,755. Although many preneed funeral insurance plans will pay for the basic costs of a funeral, items like a cemetery plot and monument may not be included. If the pre-need plan does not cover these costs, the family will have to pay for them out of pocket. Such unanticipated costs, usually required up front, can place a financial strain

on loved ones.

The Hermann Sons Life SAFE Plan can be the appropriate plan to not only cover funeral and burial costs, but associated medical bills, credit card debt, probate fees and other end-of-life expenses. Available to persons from 50 to 90 years of age who want additional life coverage, the SAFE Plan can be used to cover any expense and is payable to beneficiaries tax free. It can be a powerful tool for distributing wealth across family generations, or may be used as a legacy gift.

Although not a guaranteed issue plan, the SAFE Plan features modified underwriting requirements that can accommodate some medical issues. This single premium plan provides a “pay once and done” feature.

Only annual lodge dues must be paid after the certificate is

issued. Current Hermann Sons Life members only pay lodge dues on one product, so no additional lodge dues are required no matter how many products you have.

Certificate amounts between $5,000 and $50,000 are available in increments of $1,000, so the amount can be tailored to fit each individual need and budget. The plan features growth of 2.5 percent on the face amount of the certificate. For example, a $10,000 plan grows by $250 per year while the certificate is in force. Allowing for death benefit growth, the plan keeps pace with the rising costs of funerals and associated services.

Those with investments that are meant to be passed on to beneficiaries upon death may wish to consider the tax-free death benefit provisions of a life insurance policy. Placing funds

in a life policy is an appropriate way to pass on wealth to succeeding generations outside of probate, assuring your wishes are followed and wealth is adequately distributed.

Medical Notes The brain is a complex organ responsible for controlling many different bodily functions.

When working at optimal capacity, the brain is a wonder to behold. When illness or trauma affects the brain, various parts of the body may not work as they should.

One of the more devastating things that can affect the brain is stroke. Stroke describes a sudden stoppage of blood from reaching the brain. Harvard Medical School states that if a large number of brain cells are starved of blood supply, they can die. With their demise, a

person’s memory and ability to speak and move can be compromised.

While many strokes come on suddenly, certain factors may indicate a person is at risk. Such factors may include prior heart attacks, genetics, high blood pressure, smoking or a prior

stroke. However, in a particular type of stroke – a “silent stroke” – symptoms are far more subtle and difficult to spot.

Silent cerebral infarction, often referred to as “SCI” or “silent stroke,” is a brain injury likely caused by a blood clot interrupting blood flow to the brain,

offers the American Stroke Association. Silent strokes increase risk for other strokes and can be a sign of progressive brain damage. A silent stroke is typically only noticed as a side component of an MRI of the brain.

Medical Notes Cont’d. from Pg. 10 Many times patients do not recall having a stroke and never felt any symptoms. Silent strokes should not be mistaken for ministrokes. Mini-stroke is a brief but discrete and memorable event, with symptoms appearing for a few minutes or a few hours.

According to a study on silent stroke titled “Functional and Cognitive Consequences of Silent Stroke Discovered Using Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in an Elderly Population”

and published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, silent strokes are quite common and can have serious consequences.

Researchers have found that silent stroke is associated with impairments in tests of cognitive function rather than movementoriented performance tests like rising from a chair. Almost 50 percent of studied silent strokes affected frontal circuit components of the brain, such as the frontal cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. Lesions in these brain

structures compromised executive functions and were related to vascular dementia. Another study showed associations between silent stroke and visual field deficits, weakness in walking on heels, history of memory loss, migraines, and lower scores in cognitive function tests.

The “silent” part of a silent stroke also refers to the areas of the brain that the stroke affects. Experts at Harvard Medical School explain that, during a silent stroke, an interruption in blood flow destroys areas of

cells in a part of the brain that is “silent,” meaning that it doesn’t control any vital functions. Researchers say that, over time, the damage from silent strokes can accumulate, leading to more and more problems with memory. Collectively, silent strokes become silent no longer.

There are certain ways to reduce the risk of any type of stroke. These include: • manage high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels • quit smoking

• reduce the risk of diabetes and effectively treat the condition if it is present • lose weight to prevent obesity • exercise and avoid a sedentary lifestyle • take a low-dose aspirin or a drug that prevents blood clots.

Silent strokes largely go unrecognized but can lead to significant brain injury.

Getting the facts can help men and women reduce their risk for silent stroke.

Junior members have two scholarship opportunities SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life members graduating from high school have two scholarship opportunities.

Following is a brief description of the qualifications for each.

CAMP-ShAnnon leigh gAffney In 2018, three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the fall semester. The scholarship provides money to graduating high

school seniors who are current members of Hermann Sons Life who attended Hermann Sons Life Camp. Premiums and dues must be current in order to apply.

Deadline to apply is March 1. The online application can be found at hermannsonslife.org/programs/ scholarships.

This fund was established in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney.

Applicants must submit documentation of their scholastic record, two letters of reference testifying to their talents and character, and an essay titled “How Being a Hermann Sons Life Camper Helped to Shape the Person I Am Today.”

RetiReMent hoMe SCholARShiP The five $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to one student from

each of the five Hermann Sons Life regions.

Each applicant must be a member of Hermann Sons Life for a minimum of five years and have a certificate of insurance and local lodge dues paid up on the date of the filing of the application.

High school grades will have no bearing on who receives these scholarships. Students must write an essay of 300 words or less on

what Hermann Sons Life means to them.

Scholarships will be awarded to first-year college students only and may be used at any four-year university, two-year community college or trade school of the student’s choosing.

Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge recently made a donation to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Agent Jerry Ziemnicki found an article titled “Gear Up For Texas Game Wardens” in a recent issue of the Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine. The story told about the heroic role game wardens played as first responders during Hurricane Harvey. The article also mentioned that sometimes wardens have to use their own money to pay for equipment. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation has compiled a list of equipment needs at www.gearupforgamewardens.org. Jerry found out that Region 4 wardens needed snake boots. He took this information to the lodge and members agreed to buy seven pairs of quality snake boots. SCHWERTNER – Schwertner Lodge members celebrated Christmas with a dinner on Dec. 10. Forty-seven members and guests were in attendance including Chair of the Board Sandra Jones and husband Sam and Director David Wolf and wife Pamela.

Crossroads Café catered the chicken fried steak dinner.

Several donations were announced at the dinner.

A $200 donation was made to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

And donations were made to the Schwertner Community Club, Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department, Granger Volunteer Fire Department and the Jarrell Fire Department.

Each family went home with a door prize.

A meeting was held in January to vote on the amended Local Lodge Bylaws and install officers.

Anton Wenzel plans trip to Kickapoo on March 25 SAN ANTONIO - Anton Wenzel Lodge will meet March 6. Fried fish will be served. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

The lodge held its annual memorial service during the February meeting. Vice President Larry Burns hosted the ceremony.

Officers were installed and a new member, Robert Marrota, was welcomed.

The lodge is sponsoring a trip to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino on Sunday, March 25. Cost is $35 for the round trip bus ride and the casino will provide each player with $15 in credit on their “Lucky Eagle” Pass Card. Everyone needs to be at the lodge building no later than 7:30 a.m.

Mission-Alamo installs 2018 officers

SAN ANTONIO – Officers were installed at the first meeting of the New Year for MissionAlamo Lodge. The lodge’s new president, Sylvia Schulmeier, conducted the installation ceremony.

Welcomed as new members were Royal J. Dorset and Samuel Joseph Bazany.

The lodge received notes from Pat and Susan Koerber and Robert and Florence Higgins thanking the lodge for the donations they received after Hurricane Harvey damaged their homes on the coast.

Members are mourning the passing of three members, Elmer Wilke, a member for 78 years; Joan Ramert, a member for 12 years; and Gilbert Kiolbassa, a member for 28 years.

Prinz Solms installs officers BULVERDE – Prinz Solms Lodge will meet March 11 at 5 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center.

Officers were installed at the January meeting. They include president, Clif Klabunde; vice president, Teresa Saathoff’ secretary/treasurer, Tom Pardue; trustees, Doug Saathoff, Russell Boss and Irene Scholz; communications coordinator, Tom Pardue; youth coordinator, Audrey Klabunde; membership coordinator, Doug Klabunde; and community coordinator, Jackie Oldfield.

After some discussion, members voted on the 2018 calendar.

Meetings will be held on the second Sunday of the month at 5

p.m. except for May, August and December. The lodge will participate in a new member picnic at the Camp on Aug. 4 and will celebrate Christmas with Spring Branch Lodge on Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.

At the Feb. 11 meeting, members discussed attending an upcoming performance at the local S.T.A.G.E. Theater in Bulverde or the Tejas Rodeo and the Aug. 4 joint picnic at Camp.

Donations to support the Retirement Home, Grief Support Camp and Hill Country School of Dance were approved.

Members also were asked to help with the cake booth at the Bulverde Community Center’s Chicken Festival on April 29.

Old Glory to serve hamburgers March 4 OLD GLORY – Old Glory Lodge will meet Sunday, March 4. The lodge will furnish the hamburger meal. Members are asked to bring desserts.

The lodge met Feb. 4 but attendance was down, probably

because of the Super Bowl.

President Doug Vahlenkamp reported that the lodge’s new member goal for 2018 is five.

He encouraged everyone to recommend new members.

Trustees Marvin Vahlenkamp and Terry Letz discussed the

work needed on the water well and were given approval to proceed with the project.

Chub Richards won the door prize.

Following the meeting the group enjoyed a pot luck meal.

By Katie Miller executive Camp Director The Camp countdown has officially begun! The Director’s Team has already been hard at work and cannot wait for our first session that starts Sunday, June 17.

CaMp registration inforMation CoMing soon Hermann Sons Life Camp registration information will be mailed to the policy payors of eligible junior members in March. The brochure contains registration information and important summer updates.

Registration will be completed online via the Hermann Sons Life website. During the registration process, you will be able to purchase a Camp Store voucher for your child that is worth $20.

These also can be purchased from the Camp Store on the first day of your camper’s session.

These vouchers will be used by your child during their visit to the Camp Store during the week.

Change cannot be made for these vouchers and it will be the only opportunity for your camper to use the voucher. We will encourage them to use the whole voucher and help them select items that total $20.

Parents/guardians will continue

to have the opportunity to send a Skunk Note via our free oneway email service. In order to use this free service, you will need to keep the registration brochure so you can use the unique login information to send those oneway emails while your camper is attending their session. In addition to one-way emails, this login information will allow you the opportunity to view the photo gallery. suMMer theMe We are excited to unveil the Camp theme for the summer of 2018. This summer our theme is #choosekindatcamp. We are going to be focusing on the positive and how we can be kind to others not only at Camp, but everywhere. At Camp we have the unique opportunity to provide campers with skills that they can use outside of Camp, and we think kindness will be a wonderful addition to those skills.

During Week 3 we will continue to have a full-camp dance, carnival and rocket launch to celebrate the Fourth of July. traDitional half-WeeK session This year the traditional halfweek session will be held at Riverside Camp for boys and girls. We

are excited about this opportunity because it will allow us to offer a wider variety of activities to our half-week session campers.

Campers will still have a full-camp dance as well as an opportunity to launch the model rockets they build during the week. grief support session We will be holding our second Grief Support Session at Hilltop Camp July 8-11. Applications for

the Grief Session will be available at the same time as registration for the regular sessions begins in March.

If you know someone between the ages of 6-17 who would benefit from attending this session at Camp there is a form available to fill out on the Hermann Sons Life website. Applicants for the session will be accepted on a first received basis and will go through

an interview process with an individual from the Children’s Bereavement Center.

Volunteers are needed to help during the Grief Support Session.

Applications for this opportunity will be available soon on the Hermann Sons Life website.

Volunteers will be required to go through a screening process as well as some training for the week.

Campership Application for Summer 2018

This application is for children who need financial assistance in order to attend Hermann Sons Life Camp. The application can be completed by a parent/guardian, but the short answer portion should be completed by the child.

The Hermann Sons Life Comfort camperships pay half of the camper fee ($137.50 is half of the fee for the full-­‐week session and $90 is half of the fee for the half-­‐week session). Five camperships are awarded to Comfort Lodge members in good standing and one campership is awarded to any Hermann Sons Life member in good standing. The camperships being awarded to Comfort Lodge members are awarded on a first-­‐requests-­‐received basis and there is no application deadline.

The campership awarded to any member is based on application evaluations by the Campership Committee and the application postmark deadline is May 4. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they were selected by May 11.

Campers who receive camperships from Comfort Lodge may still complete the online application but will need to mail their payment along with the check from Comfort Lodge.

Camp hosts Counselor-in-Training interviews Hermann Sons Life Camp hosts Counselor-in-Training interviews COMFORT – Hermann Sons Life Camp hosted CounselorIn-Training Interview Weekends (CITI Camp) in January to select the CIT1s for the upcoming summer season.

More than 130 junior members applied to be a part of the 2018 CIT Program. Candidates are selected based on their application, references, group interviews, participation during sessions and leadership shown during activities.

One of activities that applicants complete during the weekend is a “hand”book that asks questions about their Camp experience and helps Camp staff learn a little more about each individual.

The CIT Program is an advanced camper program offering educational and leadership opportunities to past campers who are interested in being the future leaders of Camp and their communities. CITs attend Camp for one week during the summer and follow a program that includes leadership curriculum, mentoring phases and other activities. CITs pay half of the camper fee to participate in this program.

Due to the limited number of spaces for CITs, not everyone who applied will be selected for

the program. Those not selected can apply for the 2019 program.

They can also choose to wait until they are 18 years of age and apply for a counselor position since counselors are not required to have gone through the CIT Program.

Past campers who will be 15 by Sept. 1, 2019, will be eligible to apply for the 2019 CIT Program.

The application will be available on the Camp portion of the Hermann Sons Life website in late spring. CITI Camp is only open to past campers who are current Hermann Sons Life members.

Hochheim-Prairie juniors take part in youth show

YOAKUM – President Janet Zabransky installed the 2018 officers at the Jan. 6 meeting of Hochheim-Prairie Lodge held at Turner Hall.

The officers include president, Janet Zabransky; vice president, Roberta Wenzel; financial

and corresponding secretary, Carolyn Hoepfl; treasurer, Wilburn Pargmann; and financial trustees, Charlie Hoepfl, Sherri Spaeth, Debbie Zinke and Ann Machalec.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, March 4, starting with

a social time at 5 p.m. followed by a meal and short business meeting.

Several of the lodge’s junior members participated in the Yoakum FFA and 4-H Stock Show in January.

They were Gage and Ashlyn

Dicke, rabbits; Abeigh Dicke, broilers; Maddie Carroll, rabbits; Lisa Seidenberger, rabbits; and Emerson Wenske, swine.

Dance classed started in January. The class meets every Tuesday at the Yoakum Intermediate School Cafeteria.

The dance teacher is Megan Weghorst. The students are busy preparing for the spring recital.

At the February meeting, the lodge officially welcomed the 180 members of Highland Lakes Lodge who became members of Fredericksburg when the two lodges were merged on Jan. 1.

President Hans Enderlin read a letter from Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe about the 2018 Lodge Membership Growth Campaign. Lodges that meet their new member goal for the

year will receive $100.

The lodge will pay the entry fee for any member who wants to enter the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off. The event is scheduled for March 9-10 at the Retirement Home. Contact Hans if you want to participate.

Members will be discussing possible projects for Join Hands Day, which will be observed May 5 this year. In the past the lodge has supported the American Cancer Society and the Boys and Girls Club.

Pershing to celebrate 98th anniversary March 7 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will celebrate its 98th anniversary at the March 7 meeting to be held in the Home Association Ballroom beginning at 7 p.m. All past presidents will be honored. A

catered meal will be served and a cake decorated for the occasion will be held.

Poth Lodge donates to cook-off, golf tournament POTH – Poth Lodge is making plans to host an open house for the community sometime in April or May. Plans are to include the first responders from the emergency medical service, police and fire departments so the community can meet them.

The lodge met Feb. 4.

It was reported that Cloe Bostick was not at the meeting be-

cause she was ill.

Members agreed to make $50 donations to two causes – the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off and the golf tournament benefiting the Camp’s Scholarship Fund.

President Paul Hosek installed Pat Lowak as a trustee. Other officers were installed in January.

Pat Lowak showed members what could be done for the school of dance. A couple of the

ladies worked on the projects for the little girls. She also informed everyone that she helped to tailor some of the costumes for the classes.

Chris Kotara and Sharon Tanneberger won the door prizes.

Cathy Calloway treated everyone is a meal King Ranch Chicken, pinto beans and queso and chips.

Brenham installs officers, plans drive-thru dinners BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge officers for 2018 were installed at the Jan. 12 meeting.

Members voted to hold a chicken and sausage drive-thru dinner on Sunday, June 24, and a pork steak and sausage drive-thru dinner on Sunday, Oct. 28. Schovajsa will cater both meals. Plates will be $6.25 each.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Lloyd Wubbenhorst and Charles Mosley.

Giddings recognizes Lehmanns on 70th anniversary GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge wishes to recognize members Raymond and Ruby Lehmann on their 70th anniversary. The celebration was held at the Martin Luther Lutheran Church on Jan. 14.

Raymond and Ruby have been active members of the lodge since 1966. Raymond served on the board of directors for the Home Association.

They also spent many hours cooking chicken, fish and hamburgers for the Home Association and lodge events.

They worked many hours on game nights held at the hall.

The lodge thanks them for their dedication.

Graduating seniors are reminded that it is scholarship time. Packets have been sent to members who will be graduat-

ing. If you did not get a packet, contact the lodge as soon as possible. All of the scholarship applications for lodge members must be in by April 1. Send them to P.O. Box 931, Giddings, TX 78942.

Paige president installs Fort Worth to install officers March 4 officers during meeting PAIGE – President Chelle Dube installed elected and appointed officers at the Jan. 14 meeting of Paige Lodge.

Members and guests enjoyed a potluck lunch prior to the meeting.

Bernice Basward reported sending get-well wishes to Jim and Rosie Millner. A sympathy card also was sent to the Millners following the loss of their brother-in-law, James Behrend.

Congratulations on the arrival of a new baby were extended to Charlie and Brigette Burttschell and grandparents Jim and Sandy Botkin. Sandy thanked the lodge for the card as did Bernice Basward for all the cards and calls during her recovery from broken ribs.

Halle Dube won the attendance prize and Ronnie Har-

mon won the dollar pot. Otis Marburger won a cinnamon candle donated by Brenda Potter and was given to Debbie Harmon. Bernice Basward won a glass cake server that showcased a pecan praline cake.

The cake was purchased at the Elgin Stock Show by the Loblolly 4-H Club and Paige Buyers Club and given to the lodge for its continued support. Bernice was also the lucky winner of a pill organizer.

Members are reminded that lodge meetings are held the second Sunday of each month except in May when it is held the third Sunday. Lunch is served at 12:30 p.m. and the meeting immediately follows.

Another thank you letter was received from the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center for the lodge’s contribution to the Adopt-AFamily Program during the holiday season. They were able to adopt three children because of the lodge’s donation.

Agnes reminded graduating high school seniors about the two scholarships available from

Hermann Sons Life. She encouraged them to go to the website – hermannsonslife.org/programs/ scholarships – to learn more about the qualifications and how to apply. The Camp Scholarships are worth $1,000 each. The deadline to apply is March 1. The Retirement Home Scholarships are worth $1,500 each. That deadline is April 1.

Rowena presents award ROWENA – Dorothy Carter was the recipient of the 2017 Humanitarian Award for Rowena Lodge. Kathy House, lodge president and the recipient’s daughter, presented the award at the January meeting.

Dorothy is active in her church, community and school activities and projects. She is a member of the Acts Community, Altar Society of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, attends a Bible

study class and was in charge of the Veterans Day dinner.

She also volunteers at the local food pantry. She is active with Girl Scouts and is a substitute teacher on almost a daily basis. She helped with the props for the junior high school oneact play.

A ham dinner was served to family, friends and lodge members in attendance.

Harmonia installs new president

HARMONIA – After members and guests enjoyed the tamales and chili prepared as part of the second annual Harmonia Lodge Chili Cook-Off, the Jan. 11 meeting began.

Outgoing President Mike Beam installed Matt Kraus as Harmonia Lodge’s new president and then Matt installed the other elected officers.

Mike announced that the Home Association is selling Fiesta medals for $10 each to help raise funds.

Members mourned the passing of Hubert G. Eckhardt, age 84, on Nov. 21, 2017, a member since 1950, and Ralph Richard Popp, age 69, on Nov. 25, a member since 1948.

The lodge bought five tickets to the Pershing Lodge spaghetti dinner fund-raiser and they were given away as door prizes at the end of the meeting. The winners were Al Ranzau, Mike Gumpp, and Mike Warneke.

Celebrating January birthdays were Brad Dietrich and Bill Bernhard. Steve Prewitt and Brad celebrated anniversaries in January.

The chili cooks who entered the cook-off were Brad Dietrich, Mike Beam, Albert Ranzau, Bill Richard, John Gianotti and Charles Kretzschmar. A randomly selected panel of judges chose Charles’ chili as the best and he won the prize.

It was proposed at the Feb. 1 officers’ meeting that Harmonia Lodge might participate in some projects, both fund-raising and contributive in nature. The Big Give SA was started to raise money for non-profit organizations and is a possible choice, with a

Laubach donates food items

Laubach Lodge members recently donated food items to the Christian Cupboard in Seguin. A total of 43 pounds was delivered. The lodge’s next meeting will be held Sunday, March 11, at 1 p.m. in the Pecan Museum.

KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, March 5, at 7 p.m. The Kirby Lodge youth and Kirby School of Dance will provide a taco bar, desserts and drinks to kick off Fiesta.

Members enjoyed chicken, sides and desserts at the February meeting.

Welcomed as a new member was Diem Castillo.

The lodge is planning a new member event for Saturday,

Gulf Lodge members volunteer at event Gulf Lodge members volunteered Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Feed Galveston event held at the Lutheran Church in Galveston. Gulf Lodge members, Lutheran Church members and other volunteers packaged 50,000 meals for their Galveston County neighbors in need at The Lyceum of Galveston in a little more than three hours. Galveston County Food Bank representatives also were in attendance to explain how the food will be dispersed and help with the process.

Comfort Lodge plans next meeting for March 12 COMFORT – Comfort Lodge will meet Monday, March 12, at the VFW Hall in Comfort.

The social will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will include some Left Center Right. A potluck meal will be served at 6 p.m. Members are asked to bring a dish to share with the group. The business meeting will follow the meal and will include a discussion on final details for the upcoming golf tournament.

The lodge held its annual Youth Valentine Party and Camp Preview at the Feb. 12 gathering. Members and guests enjoyed a fried chicken meal with Coke floats for dessert. Prior to the meeting, junior members enjoyed various activities that concluded with a game of “HEART” with several members winning prizes.

Prize drawing tickets and golf ball drop tickets are available for purchase from several lodge members. Boerne Lodge guest speaks on fraud management

Sally Sullivan from Frost Bank was the guest speaker at the February Boerne Lodge meeting.

BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, March 2, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center at 830-249-2114 by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting.

Sally, a fraud management expert with Frost Bank, discussed identity theft and identity fraud.

Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, they are, in fact, separate issues.

Identity fraud encompasses the act of stealing and misusing personal information and the existing accounts of a victim. Identity theft, on the other hand, is tak-

ing the stolen information and using it to open and abuse new accounts in the victim’s name.

To help lower your risk of identity theft or fraud here are some tips to help protect yourself.

• Don’t put outgoing mail in your mailbox. Use a postal receptacle instead.

• Keep checks and personal information under lock and key.

• Shred all personal information before throwing it in the trash.

• Don’t leave your wallet, purse or any personal information in an automobile.

• Ladies, do not leave your purse unattended in a grocery

cart and have your hand on your purse at all times.

• Don’t give out personal information over the phone.

• Do not carry your Social Security card in your wallet or purse.

• Do not have your driver’s license number printed on your checks.

• Review and reconcile your bank account and credit card statements each month and immediately report any discrepancies.

• Once a year get a copy of your credit report and review it carefully. Notify the credit bureau if you see any inaccuracies.

It is important to remember

that identity thieves are working full-time to obtain your money and you must be vigilant to protect it at all times.

Spring Branch Lodge makes plans for New York trip BULVERDE – Spring Branch Lodge will meet March 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bulverde Community Center.

The lodge has a new president. Sandra Duncan has retired and Sharon Knibbe has been elected president.

At the Jan. 21 meeting, she installed the 2018 officers. All officers remain the same as 2017 except for vice president.

Darrel Woody was elected vice president.

Sharon is putting together a trip for members to New York in the fall. The group will leave on Oct. 6 and return Oct. 13. Visits to Niagara Falls, West Point and President Roosevelt’s home and a boat ride on the Erie Canal are planned. More information will be forthcoming.

Columbia to provide upgraded email newsletter DALLAS – There might be a cold wind blowing from the north but there is an uprising of new enthusiasm warming the Dallas Hall and Columbia Lodge.

The lodge met Feb. 3 and about 25 folks were there to be enlightened about what the lodge is up to. This year’s calendar includes a lot of projects and activities. The calendar will be printed and posted at the Hall.

The lodge has approved a plan to upgrade and provide an email newsletter. Next month information will be shared about how members can sign up for this feature. No spam will be sent, only updates about lodge activities and other official information.

However, this electronic mail will not replace the report in the Hermann Sons Life newspaper. It will only supplement this report and provide up-to-the minute information for all lodge members. This will be a closed group

email so only lodge members will be privy to the information contained within.

The annual lodge chili cookoff was held at the February meeting and, as usual, Glenn “Mullah” Marvin won. Glenn and Debra will be attending the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off in Comfort in March where he will proudly represent Columbia and hopefully bring home a trophy.

There was cornbread and beans and everything else you could want to go with the chili.

Members were informed that Jean Ernst is doing well and recovering.

Among the special projects that Columbia Lodge has planned in the upcoming months are a dinner and dance on March 24 at the Hall. The meal will include all-you-caneat spaghetti, salad, bread and desserts. Serving begins at 7 p.m. Following the meal in the Old Bowling Alley the lodge will host the League of Large

Gentlemen with members of Savoy Swing sitting in at 8 p.m.

Cost is only $12. And the proceeds benefit the lodge so it can better provide benevolent assistance to the community.

The 49th Annual St. Alphonso Pancake Breakfast will be held on Saturday, April 8, at the Hall.

This is one of the lodge’s annual fund-raisers and it is always a lot of fun and a great way to start the Deep Elm Arts Festival.

Other upcoming events needing member participation include the Join Hands Day project on May 5. The details are still being worked out so stayed tuned.

The annual book drive has come and gone. Thanks go to Cecilia Phillips for spearheading and coordinating this project. About 10 folks gathered at Cecilia and Gilbert Shelby’s house one Sunday afternoon and organized 600-plus books to go to the Cesar Chavez Learning Center.

Those who helped include

Glenn Marvin, Debra Hundley, Stanley Whitehead, Barbara Avery, Melody Ostman, Allen Hare, Dave Moynihan, Terri Holmes and Clint Holmes.

The Dallas Home Association’s General Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m.

There are five amendments to the bylaws that will be voted on if a quorum is reached.

As a summary, the five proposals include: Reducing the number of Home Association directors from 12 (six from each lodge) to 10 (five from each lodge).

Eliminating the requirement that the two lodges allocate a portion of their monthly dues to the Home Association.

Specifying that proxy votes may not be used in a General Meeting.

Specifying that when close relatives serve on the board, the quorum must be met with unrelated parties, and that directors

must recuse themselves from voting on salaries or hiring of any close relative.

Allowing the board of directors, in special circumstances, to change the General Meeting from the third to the fourth Sunday in March.

Member participation directly affects the Hall. Both lodges are equal members of the Home Association. Dinner will be served after the meeting.

The Home Association is working to create regular hours of operation for the Hall. There are plans in place for the kitchen to be reopened.

There are several areas that need to be addressed at the Hall. There is still work to be done in sanding the bar room and a few other areas. This work has been ongoing for a while and organizers would like to see it finished this year. The building is a beautiful and valuable part of Dallas’ history. It is something to be proud of.

Dallas Lodge will meet March 25 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet March 25 at 1 p.m. at the Hall. The lodge’s officers are encouraging more members to attend meetings.

At the Jan. 28 gathering members adopted the amended Local Lodge Bylaws and the 2018 officers were installed.

The lodge will not have a business meeting in April, May, June, August, October and December unless needed. The business meetings are scheduled for March 25, July 22, Sept. 23 and Nov. 18. The time will be 1 p.m. at the Hall.

Other events include the pending Join Hands Day project on May 5 at City Square; a public luncheon and pin ceremony on May 20 at 1 p.m. at the El Fenix Restaurant in downtown Dallas; the Make a Difference Day project on Oct. 27 at the North Texas Food Bank; and the Christmas luncheon on Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at a location to be determined.

La Vernia workday March 24 LA VERNIA – La Vernia Lodge will hold the bi-annual lodge workday on March 24 from 8 a.m.-noon. The focus will be the lodge building’s interior.

Members will clean the interior of the building and make any necessary repairs. All members are encouraged to bring their buckets and cleaning rags or their tool bag with screwdrivers and hammers. Refreshments will be provided and members

will meet afterward for lunch at a local eatery. Members are encouraged to wear green in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day. Officers were installed at the Jan. 21 meeting. Committee appointments were made and a new committee was formed to oversee the rental of the lodge building. The lodge’s 2018 goals were established and the 2018 activities were scheduled.

Rosenberg-Richmond votes on officers, schedule ROSENBERG – RosenbergRichmond Lodge met Feb. 12 to install officers and accept the lodge schedule for 2018.

John Pavlock was elected to a three-year trustee term to replace Florence Orsak who has resigned.

The 2018 schedule is as follows: • April 9, fried chicken, members bring vegetable, salad or dessert; • June 11, hamburgers, members bring desserts; • Aug. 13, ice cream and game night; • Oct. 8, sausage, sauerkraut and side dish, members bring desserts; • Nov. 12, turkey and dressing, members bring desserts; and • Dec. 10, chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak, dessert and game night.

Helotes meets on March 13 HELOTES – Helotes Lodge will install officers at the first meeting of 2018 scheduled for March 13 at 7 p.m. at Braun Hall. A catered meal will be provided hosted by sisters Lisa and Letty Fragoso.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the public dances held at Braun Hall on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

Cibolo meets March 1 with ‘Wearing O’ the Green’ CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge had the honor of hosting Alexander Lorenz from the University of Texas at Austin’s Texas German Dialect Project at the Feb. 1 meeting.

Members learned where the German belt is in Texas and that the German migration began around 1844 as life became difficult in Germany. What Alex and his colleagues do is collect oral history of the people they interview, have them translate words and phrases into German and compare it to the ones collected in the 1960s when the Texas German dialect was first recorded to see how and if it has changed.

To date they have interviewed more than 600 Texas German speakers.

The current project began in 2001. There have been 16 dissertations written about Texas German all over the world including Germany. It is taught at the undergraduate level at UT Austin and many other universities in the United States.

Bandera County plans 2018 activities BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge members met in February to plan activities for the year.

One of the goals is to get members to become more active in the lodge and its activities. All members are reminded that they are welcome at all meetings.

Members are reminded that cash attendance prizes will be given away at each meeting. But you must have been present at the previous meeting to win.

The lodge will once again participate in the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off on March 10. The lodge has participated for many years and has won many awards for showmanship, chili and beans.

April 7 is the date set for the annual Ice Cream Social at the

Retirement Home. The ukulele group will once again provide music for the sing-along. Lodge President Eileen Heath is part of the group and Secretary Beverly Gagliardi is the leader of the group. An ice cream social follows the entertainment. The residents of the Retirement Home look forward to this every year.

All adult members of the lodge are welcome to participate.

The Bandera County School of Dance will hold its annual recital on May 19 at Bandera High School. Members are encouraged to show their support to the students who have worked hard all year.

At 10:30 a.m. that same day members will gather at the Cedar Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for a visit in obser-

vance of Join Hands Day. Cedar Creek always appreciates the fellowship that members bring.

A July 22 meeting has tentatively been set for 3 p.m. More information to come.

A meeting will be held Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. if needed.

The Nov. 18 meeting will be held in the home of Gary and Kathleen Reile. A covered dish meal will be served and members will make plans for the Christmas party. The Humanitarian Award recipient will be selected and officers will be elected.

The Christmas party for the dancers will be held Dec. 2. Plans are being made to use the Lakehills Methodist Church Hall for this activity.

Deanville presents award DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge presented the 2017 Humanitarian Award to Dwayne Beran in recognition of his service to the lodge and community.

Officers were installed at the January meeting. They include president, Donnie Blinka; vice president, Tammy Jones; secretary, Marsha Kocurek; treasurer, Joyce Krenek; and trustees,

James Fritsche, Benny Jones and Wayne Eichholz.

Members are mourning the passing of Hattie Frieda Christiansen, the oldest member of the lodge, on Dec. 3. She was 100. Hattie was proud to be a member of Deanville Lodge, formerly known as Frieda Lodge.

Maxwell Lodge will meet on March 4 MAXWELL – The next meeting of Maxwell Lodge is set for March 4 with sandwiches and chips on the menu.

At the Feb. 4 meeting, President Catherine Blackard installed the 2018 officers. They include Catherine Blackard, president; Ronnie Duesterheft, vice president; Darlene Bohmfalk, secretary/treasurer; Laura Bohmfalk, youth director; Elsie Corley, Cheer Committee; and Jerry Burklund, Betty Duesterheft and Ann Wackerhagen, Finance Committee.

Agent Charles Croley gave a brief discussion on the Camp Grief Support Session to be held this summer in Comfort. Members voted to make a donation.

The lodge will not meet in April due to the Easter holiday.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 7. No meetings are scheduled for June or July. The

Rutersville will serve chili on March 7 RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge will meet March 7 with chili on the menu. Members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts. Mark your calendar and come enjoy fellowship and a meal. Visitors always are welcome.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, members enjoyed visiting and a meal of beef and chicken fajitas with side dishes and desserts provided by members.

President Sherry Noak presented information on the statewide gathering to be held in Seguin on March 17. Members voted to make a donation to the Camp Grief Support Session.
