The 2016 season at Hermann Sons Youth Camp is off to a great start. It began with Open House on June 11. Jacob Schoen, left, was among the children who took advantage of the swimming pool at Hilltop Camp. Jacob lives in San Antonio and is a member of Siemering Lodge No. 32. During Open House children and their families also had a chance to tour the facilities, make crafts, shoot arrows at the archery range and more. Weekly sessions will continue through Aug. 6. Camp fun begins!

Flag Day ceremony pays tribute to shooting victims, 9/11 flag SAN ANTONIO – The Grand Lodge paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting and 9/11 during the annual Flag Day ceremony held Tuesday, June 14, in the back parking lot. To begin the ceremony, Community Service Coordinator Laura Adams and Special Events Coordinator Tammi Sutherland unfolded a new American flag. As the Star Spangled Banner played, Sister Adams raised the flag to the top of the flagpole and then lowered it to half-staff. Letty Fragoso from the Information Technology Department then lead everyone in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. After Grand President/ CEO Buddy Preuss spoke, his Administrative Assistant Jessica Zapata read a poem, “I Wave My Flag.” To begin his speech, Grand President Preuss said, “I have spoken at many Flag Day celebrations about how our flag has always been a symbol of our country’s spirit, and a message of individual liberty, idealism and patriotism. “But today, as our flag flies at halfmast across the country in honor of the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, we are reminded that our

flag is also a symbol of the strength and unity of a nation in time of great strife, and a living testament to the resilience and compassion of the American people.” He then related the story the National 9/11 Flag that he and wife Elizabeth had seen when they were in New York that weekend. “This 30-foot American flag was proudly flying in Lower Manhattan when it was destroyed in the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center. It was unearthed from the rubble in late October of that year and hung near Ground Zero as a symbol of hope for volunteers. The tattered flag was kept by a construction manager for several years until it was given back to the people of New York. “From there, the flag traveled on a 50-state journey where it was repaired by an estimated 30,000 Americans, including wounded warriors, World War II veterans on the deck of the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, soldiers who survived the shooting at Fort Hood, first responders and 9/11 family members.
