Retirement Home awards five scholarships

COMFORT – The five recipients of the Hermann Sons Life Retirement Home Scholarship for 2019 have been named.

They are Kailey Zoch of Allen, daughter of Kevin and Rebecca Zoch and a member of Round Top Lodge; Bailey Blair of Gonzales, daughter of Brenda and Timmy Tuma and a member of New Braunfels Lodge; Kolten Lee Lentz of Hondo, son of David and Laurie Lentz and a member of Hondo Lodge; Julia Henneke of Cuero, daughter of Gary and Shirley Henneke and a member of Cuero Family Lodge; and Austin Michael Trainer of Adkins, son of Kerri and Damon Trainer and a member of Mission-Alamo Lodge.

Each student will receive $1,500 to further their education.

To be eligible, students must be a member in good standing and must complete an application and a write an essay titled “What Hermann Sons Life Means to Me.” A total of 55 applications were received.

Kailey is a graduate of Allen High School. She attended Hermann Sons Life Camp for five years.

A Message from the Chair of the Board

By SANDRA JONES Chair of the Board The Board of Directors held its first meeting with new President and CEO Eugene Zollinger on Feb . 11 .

Since this was the Board’s first meeting with Eugene, introductions were made . Each Director provided information about themselves and their involvement in Hermann Sons Life .

Eugene gave a brief history of his family and his observations during his first few days on the job .

The meeting proceeded with reports from all five of the vice presidents .

Vice President of Information Technology Matt Walker gave a report on progress and advancements in his department .

He noted that all employees will be receiving new computers with Windows 10 installed .

Letty Fragoso from his staff has been to class to learn about Windows 10 and will be instructing employees on its use .

During her report, Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly talked about activity in several areas . She gave an update on the 2021 Grand Lodge Convention and the Schools of Dance .

She reported that Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett continues to prepare for the summer season including the Grief Support Session . He is looking into ways to improve the Camp and add new activities for the campers .

Three applications had been

received for new residents at the Retirement Home . Directors were reminded about the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off Vice President of Finance Harry Werland reported on the organization’s finances and investments .

Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe reported on current production and gave a recap of 2018 numbers . He provided the names of the lodges that had met their 2018 new member goal and noted that 24 agents had qualified for a production club based on their sales . Ten agents qualified for the Last Agent Standing Award .

On Tuesday, Feb . 12, the Directors met at Riverside Camp .

Vice President Cecily Kelly was present along with Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett . He gave members a tour of both camps and shared information on the changes he is making for the upcoming season .

The Board joined the residents of the Retirement Home for lunch and toured the Home .

Schlitterbahn Family Fun Day Hermann Sons Life members are invited to the annual Family Fun Day at the waterpark in New Braunfels Saturday, June 22 .

Hilltop Camp is now available for rent to groups during the off-season (mid-August through May).

Ideal for church groups youth groups Scout groups

Members of the Future Club – Shining Stars – will be admitted free of charge.

Everyone else will pay a reduced price. Tickets must be purchased in advance through the Hermann Sons Life website – hermannsonslife.org. Click on “Store.”

Tickets for persons age 3-11 will be $44. Anyone age 12 and up will pay $49.

Children 2 and under can attend free of charge.

Members can also purchase a drink cup for a reduced price of $10.

The cup must also be purchased in advance.

The cup can be refilled all day anywhere in the park.

All paid members of the Hermann Sons Life group will be treated to breakfast from 9:30-11 a.m. in the designated area of Schlitterbahn East (Surfenburg).

Tickets must be ordered online by June 12.

Events JUNE 15 – Open House will be held at Hermann Sons 1 – The Castroville, Corpus Christi, Northwest Life Camp. Both sites will be open from 9:30 a.m.-

Bexar and San Antonio schools of dance will host their dance recitals today. Check the schedule on Page 11 for all the details.

2 – The Elgin School of Dance will host its dance recital today. Check the schedule on Page 11 for all the details.

9 – The Seguin School of Dance will host its dance recital today. Check the schedule on Page 11 for all the details.

14 – The Home Office will host a Flag Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

15 – The San Antonio Home Association is sponsoring a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament starting at 3 p.m. in the San Antonio Home Association Building, 525 S. St. Mary’s St., San Antonio.

Cost to play is $50 in advance or $60 at the door.

Re-buys will cost $20. There will be prizes for the top eight players. Tickets are available by calling 512-660-1706 or go to http://bit.ly/hermannsons.

Proceeds will be used to preserve the historic building. For more information, go to Page 8.

2 p.m. Parents and campers are welcome to come and tour the facilities. Lunch will be served in both dining halls from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Counselors will be leading activities. Both pools and the challenge course will be open. Sneakers are required for the challenge course.

Agents honored at May 18 event SAN MARCOS – The annual Agents’ Awards Banquet was held Saturday, May 18, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Marcos. The banquet honored the top producing agents of 2018.

The evening began with a social hour in the hotel’s atrium area.

The buffet-style dinner was served in the Conference Center’s Veramendi Salon.

Agent Chris Stoeltje from Needville gave the blessing before the meal was served.

Offering welcoming remarks were Chair of the Board Sandra Jones and President and CEO Eugene Zollinger.

Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe also spoke. He recognized his staff, including Marketing Analyst Ana Vasquez and Administrative Assistant Gladys Rowley, and Communications Director Kathie Ninneman.

The agents and their guests were treated to breakfast Sunday morning before leaving for home.

State bowling tournament set for Austin SAN ANTONIO – The 55th Hermann Sons Life State Bowling Tournament will be held July 27-28 and Aug. 3-4 at Dart Bowl in Austin.

The rules for entries are listed below: 1. At least two members of the team must be a member of Hermann Sons Life as of July 26, 2019. Two non-members per team is allowed.

2. Non USBC bowlers may pay an affiliate membership fee of $20, which will provide high score recognition.

3. Handicap is 90% from 220 for each bowler per event.

4. IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: It shall be each bowler’s responsibility to determine that the submitted average is correct. Failure to use the correct average shall disqualify the score if submitted average is lower than correct average thereby resulting in a lower classification or more handicap. Prize winnings shall be based on the submitted average if it is higher than the correct average. However, corrections in averages may be permitted up to the completion of the first game of a series. Every entry blank must have each bowler’s highest USBC Certified 20172018 book average based on 21 games or more at the time of participation in the tournament. Bowlers not having a 2017-2018 average must use highest 2018-2019 book average based on 21 games. Bowlers not having 2017-2018 or 2018-2019 book average must use 2019 Summer average of nine games or more in one league at time of participation. Bowlers not having any of the above averages must enter with a scratch average of 220 for the first nine games bowled in the tournament.

Bowlers will then establish a tournament average to be used the following year. Bowlers not having any of the above averages, but who bowled nine games in the 2018 tournament may use the average for those nine games in the 2019 tournament. USBC Rule 319(A-2) is waived (10 or more pins increase in average). A: 2017-2018 yearbook average. B: 2018-2019 yearbook average. C: Summer 2019 average (nine games or more in one sanctioned league at time of participation).

5. All bowlers must check in 30 minutes before scheduled to bowl and should present their current USBC Certified card.

Poker tourney set for San Antonio SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Home Association is hosting its first Texas Hold ‘Em Fundraiser Tournament on Saturday, June 15, in the San Antonio Home Association Building 525 S. St. Mary’s St. in San Antonio.

Everyone is invited to join the fun and win prizes, participate in the silent auction and enter the prize drawing. The top eight players will receive prizes.

Purchase tickets for yourself or consider purchasing them as Father’s Day gifts.

The first-place player will win a $250 gift card plus other prizes. Second place will receive a $100 gift card plus other prizes and third place will receive a $50 gift card plus other prizes.

Other prizes to be announced along with the surprise prize drawing items.

Donation is $50 in advance or $60 at the door with $20 rebuys. Each player receives two drink tickets!

10. NO ENTRIES WILL BE RECORDED UNTIL MONEY IS RECEIVED. 11. No entry fee will be returned after being received.

12. Entry fee is $17 per event. All Events is $4 optional. Non-members will pay an additional $20.

13. 100% of the prize money will be returned to bowlers. If bowler does not cash check within six months, prize winnings will be forfeited.

14. All winners’ averages will be verified before distribution of prize fund.

15. Prize ratio will be at least one for every five entries in team, singles and doubles.

16. Prize ratio for All Events will be one prize for every 20 entries.

17. Plaques will be awarded to each event’s first place winners.

18. Multiple participation will not be allowed, except in cases of emergency where a bowler who has not participated already can not be found. At least three officers of the Executive Board must approve the substitute. This can only occur in the Team Event and Doubles Event. The decision of the Executive Board shall be final unless an appeal is made in accordance with Rule 329.

19. Two separate tournaments with two separate prize lists: one for USBC female members only and one for USBC male members only.

20. Average Adjustment USBC Rule 319E will apply.

21. No previous prize winnings

22. USBC Rules will prevail in all instances not herein covered.

23. SQUAD TIMES (TEAM CAPTAIN WILL BE NOTIFIED OF DATE TO BOWL): – Opening ceremony will be held on July 27, 2019, at 12 noon.

– Singles/Doubles - Saturday, July 27 and Aug. 3 at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

– Team - Sunday, July 28 and Aug. 4 at 11 a.m.

Additional squads may be added during the course of the tournament, however no squad may be added after the final squad on Aug. 4, 2019, at 11 a.m. unless tournament is extended due to number of entries and upon approval of USBC. Secretary may drop squad if not enough bowlers.

24. Two free team entries for 2019 tournament (one male and one female) will be drawn for at the Annual Meeting on July 27, 2019.

25. Lanes will be dressed after each squad.

GULF LODGE – Members of Gulf Lodge volunteered at the Area 22 Special Olympics Spring Games in Dickinson in April. The lodge is an annual supporter of this program.

BANDERA COUNTY – Bandera County Lodge members visited the Cedar Creek Nursing Home in Bandera on May 18. Members hosted a games party for the residents. Prizes were awarded to the winners and lots of snacks were enjoyed by all. During the games party, members visited with residents who could not come down to the rec room. They were given snacks and red, white and blue flowers in celebration of Memorial Day. COLUMBIA and DALLAS LODGES – Columbia Lodge joined hands with Dallas Lodge to benefit the Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support Organization.

Fourteen volunteers worked together.

Summer and Ada Grace Ross, descendants of member Ranger Randell Fields, acted as “stylists” for member Juliea Wilbanks’ premier hostess party for Park Lane Jewelry. The party was held at the home of member Barbara Avery. Members purchased pieces of jewelry to be donated to Genesis as a part of their mission to provide a way out for women who have experienced domestic violence and may be left with no resources to get their lives back on track. These pieces may provide a much-needed boost to their wardrobes and their confidence as they seek employment and support in a world suddenly devoid of the things they may have been forced to leave behind in

Retirement Home residents were treated to homemade ice cream twice in April. On April 11, Rick McMahon made the ice cream and Annette Shaw served up the whipped cream, fruits and nuts. Residents enjoyed it so much, Rich made ice cream again on April 19.

Billie DeSalme was one of the residents celebrating a birthday in April.

Casino Night raises $5,500+ for Grief Camp COMFORT – The Healing Hearts Casino Night held May 4 at Hilltop Camp raised more than $5,500 for the 2019 Grief Support Camp.

“It was such a great night,” Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said. “There were winners and there were losers but everyone had a lot of fun. Of course, the real winners are the children who will be attending this year’s Grief Camp.”

The evening began with a steak and baked potato dinner.

Everyone received $1,000 in gambling money to get them started. When that ran out, they could buy another $1,000 for a $20 donation.

Games included Black Jack, a roulette wheel and Texas Hold ‘Em poker. There were also two slot machines.

At the end of the gambling, players exchanged their chips for tickets that they placed in buckets for a chance to win one of four great prizes.

Throughout the evening door prizes were given away.

A photo booth gave everyone a chance to have a fun picture taken.

This will be the third year for the Grief Support Camp.

Donations and fund-raisers make it possible for the children to attend this special Camp at no cost to the family except for a $50 application fee.

Applications have been approved for 85 children to attend. No more applications are being accepted for this year’s session.

During the Camp, children ages 6 to 17 who have lost a parent or sibling get to experience all of the great things about a summer camp. They go swimming and do camp crafts plus lots of other fun stuff.

But lots of time is set aside for theraphy, which is done in group settings called healing circles. Special activities are planned each evening.

“Hermann Sons Life is committed to continuing this program,” Cecily said. “And with the awesome support of our members and lodges it will. I can’t thank everyone enough for making this happen.”

Langston earns medical degree BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge member Jacob Ross Langston has graduated from the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine.

His proud parents are Steve and Robyn Langston.

Jacob has been a Hermann Sons Life member since 2001.

He graduated frpm Bandera High School in 2011 and received a degree from Texas A&M in 2015.

Prior to graduating from medical school, Jacob was matched during a Match Day Ceremony on March 15 in Dallas for his Internship and his residency.

He will pursue his goal to become a radiation oncologist and will complete his internship at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, Calif., and then serve four years of

Jacob Ross Langston residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz in Aurora, Colo., where he will be training with the top doctors in the field of radiation oncology.

He graduated in the top 10 percent of his medical school class and graduated with honors.

Medical Notes The destination is picked, the tickets are purchased and now you’re about to taxi down the runway, waiting for your plane to depart. Just then several coughs ring out in the cabin as the dry overhead air starts pouring out of the vents. That’s when you start to wonder if you’ll be nursing cold medicine instead of tropical drinks this vacation.

Millions of people board planes, cruise ships, buses and other modes of transportation each and every day. While most people envision bringing home kitschy souvenirs from their vacations or working on their suntans, others acquire a less favorable memento: illness.

The following are some effective ways to avoid getting sick while traveling.

• Get vaccinated before travel-

ing. Check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the U.S. State Department to determine if there are specific vaccinations recommended for travelers visiting your destination. If so, be sure to get vaccinated before departing.

• Bring sanitizer along. When packing, stash some hand sanitizer wipes and brush down the arms of chairs, remote controls, seat belt clips, buttons and light switches, and anything else the cleaning crew may have glossed over. Wash your hands frequently as well, as there may be some germs that sneak by.

• Avoid tap water. Stick to bottled water, especially when traveling to foreign countries. Even if the water isn’t teeming with bacteria, it may throw your stomach for a loop as you adjust. In addition,

don’t forget that ice cubes are typically made from tap water, so skip drinks on the rocks.

• Avoid uncooked fruit and produce. Stick to cooked foods instead.

• Ensure food is thoroughly cooked. Opt for medium to welldone meats, and be sure that foods are served piping hot. Exercise caution when hitting the buffet as well, as that sneeze guard may not keep food completely safe.

• Protect against the sun and heat. Use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 and reapply frequently, especially if you are sweating or going in the water.

Signs of heat exhaustion can include fatigue, dizziness, heavy sweating, and cool moist skin with goose bumps. Increase your fluid intake and get into a cool environment promptly.

Healing Hearts Casino Night Benefit raises funds for Grief Suppot Session

Camp season starts in just a few weeks!

By IAN “GUNNER” BRASSETT Executive Camp Director CAMP IS ALMOST HERE! And we are excited!

Quite a few staff members will have already made their way to Comfort by the time this newspaper is printed. We are conducting lifeguard classes and Ropes course certifications over the Memorial Day weekend.

John, Clay, T-Daddy and Bryce have been working diligently to get the facilities ready for our campers.

Tammi and Jacqueline have been busy processing the enrollments and helping coordinate the donations from many of our lodges for the Grief Support Session.

Pops has been shopping and looking for cool activity supplies to have in place for our campers including some awesome new ceramic pieces, leather designs and a cool new arts and crafts project for the summer. We also have brand new

compact bows for archery for both Riverside and Hilltop camps.

The board has been very supportive and has allowed us to look at the purchase of a school bus to allow the campers to move from camp to camp without walking the hill! It will also allow us to perhaps offer canoeing to our Hilltop campers in 2020!

Webster, Lucky and Tricky are busy working on the bunking and the activity schedules to prepare for an awesome summer camp experience for each and every camper coming to Camp.

Encourage your child to be strong Whether it is your child’s first-time summer camp experience or they are returning for their fifth summer, it is very normal for the camper to experience nerves and excitement. Many times in equal parts! Last year, Katie wrote an excellent piece for the newspaper on what campers should expect during their time at Camp. Much of that piece is incorporated below.

It is important for parents to be supportive. Encourage your child to be strong. If there are any nerves, make sure they understand that it is normal and to be expected. You believe in them. You know they will have a great time.

I always recommend you visit the Camp, which is why we hold Open House. Check out the story on this page for more on that.

ARRIVAL DAY Upon arrival campers will be directed to head immediately to their cabin - their home for the week. They will meet the girls or boys in their cabin – possible the best friend they haven’t met yet! They will also meet their counselors. They are in Camp for the campers. Many have been campers in Camp and want you to have an awesome time!

Camp is such an awesome place to make friends, lifelong friends. Camp is a fun, exciting place where people come together. Our arrival day activities create team bonding and you also have the opportunity to learn something new too. Campers grow as individuals as they grow closer together.

We can only do this if the parents have given us the paperwork ahead of arrival day.

During the summer, your child can expect…

Lots of excitement.

Picture lots of cheering, smiling and warm smiles to greet you as you arrive at Camp. We are as excited (likely more so) as you are. We just show it by going crazy (in a good way) when we see you! You will also be able to feel the excitement from the campers who couldn’t wait to come back to spend another summer at Camp.

To learn lots of crazy names.

One of the most fun traditions at Hermann Sons Life Camp is our Camp names. They’re weird, funny and seemingly out of the blue. Don’t be afraid to ask counselors how they got their name. It’s an awesome way to get to know people, plus it’s funny. Get ready to meet people like Gunner, Tricky, Skittles, Lucky, Webster, Chopstix, Smudge, Kemosabe and so many more.

To hear lots of loud cheers and silly songs.

We love to show our team pride and sing our cabin songs and chants. We also love to sing before we go into the dining hall, during snack breaks, and really just whenever we get a chance.

The best part is that several of the songs are repeat-after-me ones so you will be able to catch on quickly.

To experience something new.

It could be a new activity, meeting a new friend or making decisions on your own for the first time. Camp is a great place to experience something new because it is an environment that allows campers to try something new in a comfortable setting. We also embrace mistakes and look at them as an opportunity to learn.

Everyone invited to Camp Open House OPEN HOUSE AT CAMP is Saturday, June 15! Both sites will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Everyone is invited to this event to tour the facilities, talk with Camp staff members, have lunch and take part in some of the activities. Swimming will be one of the activities offered. The Challenge Course also will be open to interested individuals wearing sneakers. Open House is entertaining for the entire family. Many children like to bring their friends. Campers not yet old enough to attend Camp are especially encouraged to attend Open House so they can begin exploring and learning about Camp.

Lunch will be available at both sites from approximately 11 a.m-1:30 p.m. There is no-charge for lunch. Even if you have attended Open House before, you’re welcome to come again.

There is no need to RSVP – participants come and go as they please, however it would be nice to have a ballpark number.

Retirement Home Scholarship recipients named Cont’d. from Pg. 1 She plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will study elementary education with the goal of becoming an elementary school counselor.

In her essay Kailey wrote, “Hermann Sons Youth Camp shaped me more than I could have ever expected. It will always hold a special place in my heart. To me, Hermann Sons Life means family, friendship and fun. Family, because the amazing Camp counselors and staff made me feel like I mattered and was important. As a kid I was bullied, so feeling wanted and loved was such a wonderful feeling.

Friendship, because all the girls I met through Hermann Sons Life were so kind and accepting.

In fact, I still have a relationship with many of my Camp friends from so many years ago. Fun, because Camp is meant to be enjoyable. I had a blast every year I attended. If it wasn’t for Hermann Sons Life, I would have never felt the love, acceptance and individuality that I felt at Camp.”

Bailey is a graduate of St. Paul High School in Shiner. She took part in the Dance Program for one year and attended Camp for eight years – five as a camper, two as a counselor-in-training and one as a junior counselor.

She plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will study biomedical sciences with a goal to attend medical school and became a neurosurgeon researcher. Kaley also received the Hermann Sons Youth CampShannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship this year.

In her essay, Bailey wrote, “As a child, I did not make friends very easily. When I came to Hermann Sons Life Camp, I was able to get a fresh start. Throughout the week, I developed people skills among children my own age. These people skills have enabled me to enter any social situation and start a conversation with a stranger and make a new connection.

“Another way Hermann Sons Life Camp shaped me into the

Every day, we have to ‘clean for ice cream, woo.’ I would wake up as soon as the music played, get dressed very quickly, and make my bed. Making my bed first taught me self-discipline and enabled me to start the day with a task completed. The chores performed at Camp have taught me to care about the needs of others before my own. Since my years as a camper, I have participated in many community service projects because Hermann Sons Life Camp sparked my desire for selflessness.

“Lastly, Hermann Sons Life gave me confidence. As a young girl, I felt the pressure of needing to look and act a certain way to get people to like me. I was scared to try new things. Hermann Sons Life provided me with a judgement-free zone. I was able to develop confidence in myself through the sports activities and the talent show at Camp. Strengthening my confidence has enabled me to believe in myself whenever I am faced with an obstacle.

“Hermann Sons Life changed my life in a dramatic way. I was able to become more social, selfless, disciplined and confident. I have been able to apply these lessons to everyday situations and will continue to do so in the future.”

Kolten is graduating from Hondo High School.

He plans to attend Tarleton State University/Texas A&M University where he will study geology and agribusiness.

In his essay, Kolten wrote, “Having roots and family traditions is very important to me. I think this is why my parents pur-

She plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will study poultry science.

In her essay, Julia wrote, “When I was younger, I thought that Hermann Sons Life was just a place for my parents to send me for a week during the summer, and a place for me to learn that ballet slippers were not for me. The Camp allowed me to grow confident in myself, and helped me to meet new people.

And the countless dance recitals helped me to branch out and find out what I truly enjoy doing.

While those experiences helped shape me into the person that I am today, I now am learning to better understand what Her-

Austin is a graduate of East Central High School. He attended Hermann Sons Life Camp for five years.

He plans to attend Texas A&M University where he will study biomedical sciences.

In his essay, Austin wrote, “When I think about what Hermann Sons Life means to me, I think about a community that is part of a larger family. A strong community such as Hermann Sons is one that brings together people with common goals and interests and provides avenues for helping others and giving back to the community.

“Community service has been a big part of my life since I was small and I love helping others. I have spent countless hours volunteering my time at my church, school and other local organizations. I know that I have been blessed in my life and want to give back to others in any possible way. Because I have a passion for service, I have chosen a major in college (biomedical sciences) and a future profession as a doctor, so that I can continue to help others and make a difference. I’ve always admired how Hermann Sons Life gives back to not only their members by providing financial security, but also to the broader community through efforts such as Join Hands Day. “I will always remember Hermann Sons Life for giving me the opportunity to be part of a community of campers. Attending Hermann Sons Youth Camp for five years allowed me to meet many new people and gave me independence, confidence and the opportunity to develop leadership skills. All of these skills and experiences will carry with me throughout my life especially as I start college in the near future.”

Boerne Lodge hosts executive camp director BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, June 7, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center at 830-249-2114 by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting.

Guests at the May 3 meeting were Paul Bednar and Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett.

Ian spoke of having only the best interest of the children in mind when planning Camp activities. He said that he has made many new and beneficial changes to the children’s camping experience and is looking forward to the start of summer camp. He wants all the youth who attend Camp to

have a fun time and he has included new activities that will allow the children to keep busy and stay engaged.

The lodge welcomed three new junior members. They are Matthew Biggs, Andrew Sandoval and Skylar Breaux. Welcomed by way of transfer was Mike Solarczyk.

The lodge received a note of thanks from the Home Office for the donation to the Healing Hearts Casino Night in observance of Join Hands Day. Other thank-yous read were from the Home Office for the donation to the Retirement Home in memory of Verda Bergmann and two Kendall County Junior Livestock Show partici-

pants, Judd Lozano and Emma Wright, who were recipients of donations.

Members are reminded to get their tickers for the Family Fun Day on June 22 at Schlitterbahn.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Barbara Vogt who celebrated her birthday on May 8.

Dallas Lodge pioneers receive membership pins DALLAS - Dallas Lodge members congratulate the members who are celebrating membership milestones in May. They include Frieda Galipp who joined May 12,1944, and is receiving her 75-year pin.

She lives in St. Louis, Mo. Neva Haller Cecil joined June 22, 1949, and is receiving her 70year pin. She lives in Sachse.

Receiving 60-year pins are David Timm of Dallas, who joined April 9, 1959; Jackson Connell of Ackerman, Miss., who joined

April 14, 1959; and Pamela James of Garland who joined June 11, 1959. Receiving her 50year pin is Kimberley Smith of Wylie who joined April 21, 1969.

Dallas Lodge members are excited to have two new agents working in the Dallas area. They are Gilbert Shelby and Cecilia Phillips. The husband and wife are members of Columbia Lodge in Dallas.

Four members of the lodge are graduating from high school this year. They are Mor-

gan Henderson, Katya Uhrich, Stuart Williams and Morgan Wray. They have until June 1 to apply for the lodge’s scholarship. The Scholarship Committee members are Clint Holmes, Margaret Owens and Andy Schellenberg.

The lodge will not meet in June. The next regular meeting will be held July 28 at 1 p.m. at the Hall.

At the Home Association Board meeting on April 23 it was reported that the Hall was

the headquarters for the Deep Ellum Arts Festival April 5-7. The lodges sold food and drinks and the Home Association provided music venues. Attendance was down because of the rain however revenue was increased.

erage, increasing the bank balance, booking more music and events, upgrades to the fire alarm system and security cameras, the new ballroom bar, 150 new chairs and 28 new tables.

Director Jeff Ferrand, secretary and Finance Committee member, resigned to help his parents more. Jeff did an outstanding job and will be missed.

Deanville to host Flag Day ceremony June 14 DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge provided and was the recipient of community service in the past two months.

A community-wide Easter egg hunt was hosted by the Lodge on March 24. Special guest was the Easter Bunny who left a large amount of eggs for the excited children to find.

The Deanville 4-H Club performed a community service on April 10 by cleaning the lodge hall and picking up trash in preparation for the Fifth Annual Shrimp Boil benefiting the Deanville Memorial Park Association which was held April 12 at the historic lodge hall.

Approximately 600 persons were attendance and 1,500 pounds of shrimp was prepared for the event by members of the Memorial Park Association.

Corpus Christi provides toiletry bags for homeless CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will meet June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilltop Community Center. A pot luck meal and meeting are planned.

The April gathering was held at Millers BBQ. President and CEO Eugene Zollinger was in attendance.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge partnered with Annaville Baptist Church and put together 48 toiletry bags that were distributed to local homeless people on May 3.

The lodge’s second annual Easter egg hunt was held April 13 with an even bigger turnout than last year. The Easter Bunny paid a surprise visit.

Alexis Gutierrez, one of the lodge’s youth members, received a $100 graduation gift from the lodge. She will be graduating from Veterans Memorial High School and will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall!

Brenham Lodge to sponsor delegate to Boys State BRENHAM – At the April 12 meeting, Brenham Lodge announced it will sponsor Ethan Weatherby as a delegate to Boys State.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg reported that he recently attended a workshop at the Home Office and met new President and CEO Eugene Zollinger. The lodge’s membership goal for 2019 is eight.

She attended an agent training class in Columbus recently.

It was reported that a sympathy card was sent to Leera Janecka following the loss of her

husband, Mark Janecka.

A memorial service was held for Leroy Hoffmann and Louise Hohmann. In attendance were Leroy’s wife Verlene and daughter Brenda Hoffmann and Louis’ daughter Jennifer Hall.

Fort Worth Lodge’s newest members are triplets

FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge is working to meet its 2019 new member goal. In May, the lodge welcomed junior member Campbell Leonard. Reese Baker, another new member, recommended Campbell.

Next is a first for the lodge as it welcomes triplets – Adelaide, Carter and Jackson Childs. Mom Lindsay went to Camp when she was a child and wants her children to experience it as well.

They are looking forward to seeing what their mother saw and did as a child.

Parents are asked to submit their child’s Camp pictures and stories to share in the lodge’s newspaper article.

One of the lodge’s Join Hands Day project this year was to pay to have the dining hall at Riverside Camp painted. This was something that needed to be done and it was a great project for the lodge. The girls will love the new look.

The second project was to sponsor a table at the Healing

Caden Jones was recently presented with the Wolverine Award at his school. Caden is a member of Fort Worth Lodge.

Fort Worth Lodge recognizes junior member Hailee McBroom who has graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in nursing.

Cathy joined on May 4, 1969.

Both of Cathy’s parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins were active members. Hope to see her at the pin presentation on June 2.

Kudos to two of our young members. Out of more than 600 students at STEAM, the teachers picked 31 to receive the Wolverine Award and Caden Jones was one of them. He was nominated

by ELA teacher Mrs. Ledwig.

Congratulations also are in order for Hailee McBroom who graduated from Texas A&M and the nursing school.

Both of these young people are fourth-generation members.

The Youth Committee has sent letters to all Camp age youth who are members of the lodge.

Parents are reminded to return the letter to Ronnie Jones if their child is going to Camp so he can

get their T-shirt to them before they go. If you have not received a letter, contact Ronnie Jones at 817-229-5722.

Each child who orders a T-shirt will be added to a drawing to possibly win back part of their Camp fee. This is open to all Fort Worth Lodge youth going to Camp.

McGregor Lodge announces 2019 summer schedule McGREGOR – McGregor Lodge has announced its summer meeting scheduled. The lodge will meet June 5 at 6 p.m. at the McGregor Housing Charlie Griffith Center. The lodge will not meet in July. The Aug. 7 meeting will also be at the Charlie Griffith Center.

The May 2 meeting was held

at Luigi’s.

The date was changed because of bad weather but it turned out the weather was nice on Wednesday, the first, but bad on Thursday, the second. Those who did attend enjoyed pizza and salad and a chance to visit.

A donation was made to the McGregor Food Pantry in observance of Join Hands Day. Sympathy is extended to the family of Nelda Lofland. Nelda operated a day care center at one time, and everyone wanted their children to be loved by

Sympathy also is extended to the family of Norma Haddock.

She was the lodge’s secretary/ treasurer for many years. She made the best peach ice cream.

San Marcos Lodge to salute fathers on June 3 SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will meet Monday, June 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Vista Club House and will include a salute to fathers and the American flag. Hostess Janet Boehringer will bring the fried chicken.

Vineta to hold fund-raiser July 17 SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will hold its annual scholarship fund-raiser July 17 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Home Association Rathskeller. The Hartmanns will fry fish, chips and hush puppies. Marilynn Weidmann will bring cole slaw and Kent and Sherry Weber will furnish beans. Tanja Tomlinson will bring an apple pie and Herman Weber will furnish all the condiments including lemons.

who had recently been in need of prayers. Stephen Hartmann is doing well following back surgery.

President Phil Hartmann read correspondence from the Home Office that included a check for $100 for the lodge for reaching its 2018 membership goal. The 2019 membership goal is three new members.

Jerry Gass gave a Join Hands Day project update. Brain Fitness activities with the Rotary benefiting the LBJ Nursing Home in Johnson City will be held the first Friday of the month and one was held April

15 at the Henry House in Blanco.

Members voted to request the Hermann Sons Life float for the Blanco County Parade on Aug. 17.

Items for the Camp Grief Support Session were collected and will be collected again at the June 2 meeting.

Renate Tannenberger was the oldest female present and Milton Fuchs Sr. was the oldest

President Jack Manchack wasn’t able to attend because of recent bypass surgery. Doris Falkenberg had back surgery April 30. Praying both are recovering quickly.

Bernardo Lodge to hold summer social June 8 BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will hold its annual summer social June 8 at the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department Station.

Barbecue pork, hot dogs and refreshments will be provided.

be there to present 50-year and 60-year membership pins.

A Flag Day ceremony also will be conducted by the local Boy Scouts.

Round Top Lodge to financially assist campers ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge heard several reports when it met April 25 at the American Legion Hall in Round Top. Jeanette Schoenst read a thank-you note from the Round Top-Carmine Educational Foundation.

Melanie Rauch reported that cards had been sent to the Gau family, Mary Noak and Doris Georges. Members provided updates on members and community supporters.

Agent Linda Mattocks talked about the Grief Support Camp and Shining Stars. She also noted that campers will be able to

sign up for a second week after May 15. The lodge will support campers financially for their first week at Camp.

A donation was sent to the United Church of Christ in Burton in honor of Edna Meinkowsky.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge sponsored the Country Store at the Round Top-Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department fund-raiser held at Rifle Hall.

Congratulations were extended to Sophie Rauch who had been confirmed on Palm Sunday.

Cibolo to celebrate Father’s Day at June meeting CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will meet June 6. The lodge will celebrate Father’s Day with Bill Miller’s barbecue. The ladies will provide the desserts. Bunco will be played.

The annual Flag Day ceremony will be held Friday, June 14, at 8:30 a.m. at Cibolo City Hall.

The May meeting began with a dinner featuring lasagna and desserts. The winning side dish were the yummy cucumbers prepared by Gail Gray and the dessert winner was a colorful Neapolitan cake made by Sherry Rakowitz.

The lodge is applauding the accomplishments of junior member Bret Gray. He bowled a perfect 300-point game to win the boys’ 6A state bowling title and was named the best male high school bowler in Texas. The very next day, Bret qualified for the regional golf tournament with a score of 73.

To honor the memory of a dear member who recently passed away, the lodge has renamed its scholarship the Brenda Fey Memorial Scholarship.

In observance of Join Hands Day, lodge members distributed flowers at the dance recital on Saturday, May 4.

Siemering to attend Missions game on June 18 SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge members will attend the San Antonio Missions game on June 18 at Wolfe Stadium.

Those who did not pre-reserve tickets are welcome to attend as this is an AARP $2 Tuesday game. Everything is $2 including tickets, parking, drinks and food items. You may not be in the reserved area, but everyone will be there for a good time.

The lodge does not meet in July. The August meeting will include a memorial service and other activities following dinner.

May was a busy month. The lodge celebrated its anniversary and Mother’s Day and welcomed President and CEO Eugene Zollinger who presented a 70-year pin to Marvin Klaus and 60-year pins to Sharon Hertzberg Fite and Sally Hertzberg.

President Donald O’Conner presented a donation to the Grief Support Camp to Eugene.

The donation represents the lodge’s half of the split-the-pot proceeds each month.

Members are reminded to check their schedules and make a little time to attend meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. for great fellowship and the good feeling of helping with projects that benefit the community.

Louise Schuetze plans dinner out for June 10

SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge members will have dinner out for the June 10 meeting. Members will meet at La Fonda Alamo Heights, 8633 Crownhill Blvd., at 6:30 p.m.

The lodge will buy dinner for members. Guests will be responsible for their meal.

The lodge has collected at least 500 children’s book to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in observance of Join Hands Day. The lodge will not meet in July.

COMFORT – Comfort Lodge held its annual picnic at the Retirement Home on May 13.

Instead of the usual sandwich supper, guests were treated to a catered meal from Bill Miller BBQ as well as oatmeal cake provided by the Retirement Home staff.

More than 75 people were in attendance and everyone had a good time.

Two Comfort Lodge graduating seniors were presented with a scholarship from the lodge.

Receiving the awards were Tyler Aldrich and Madysen Walker.

Both Aldrich and Walker are seniors at Comfort High School.

After graduation Tyler plans on

attending Texas State Technical College-Rosenberg where he will study welding. Madysen will attend Northwest Vista College. She wants to be a nurse.

The lodge will not meet in June or July.

The next scheduled meeting will take place Monday, Aug. 12, at the VFW Hall in Comfort.

The social will begin at 4:30 p.m. The meal will be served at 6 p.m. and will be provided by the lodge. The business meeting will follow the meal.

Fredericksburg to serve chalupas FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge will host a chalupa supper June 4. The lodge will furnish the chalupas (bean, meat and cheese). Members and guests are asked to bring a side dish. All fathers will be recognized.

At the May meeting, President

Hans Enderlin read a thank-you letter from the Home Office for the $200 contribution to the Grief Support Camp and one from the Needs Council for the $200 contribution from the lodge.

Attendance prizes were awarded to Margaret Priess and Hans Enderlin.
