Fund-raiser benefits shooting survivor “He says we fought the devil and God won,” said Natalie Rivas of her grandson, Kris Workman, 34, survivor of the mass shooting at the Sutherland Springs Baptist Church last fall. Natalie, a resident of Schertz, shared her grandson’s story while visiting the Home Office on May 3 to participate in a Hamburger Dinner Fund-raiser benefiting Kris, a Hermann Sons Life member. Kris’ grandfather Tony joined her later and expressed his deep appreciation. In observance of Join Hands Day, Mission-Alamo Lodge, Lone Oak Lodge and the San Antonio Young Marines held the hamburger dinner to raise funds for Kris. It was held at the San Antonio Home Association building and raised more than $3,500.
“On behalf of Mission-Alamo Lodge and Lone Oak Lodge we would like to thank all of the people who made donations and helped to make this event successful,” Laura Adams, Mission-Alamo Lodge community service coordinator, said. Kris was attending the NRA Convention in Dallas at the time of the event so he could not be there but was invited to the May 23 meeting of Mission-Alamo Lodge to accept the proceeds from the benefit. Natalie said Kris was shot point-blank in the back that tragic day of Nov. 5, 2017. A gunman entered the church and killed 26 and injured 20. It was the deadliest mass shooting in Texas. Retirement Home awards five scholarships COMFORT – The Retirement Home Scholarship Fund has announced the names of the five recipients of the $1,500 scholarships awarded in 2018. They are Lauren Floores from La Vernia Lodge, Lauren Carranco from New Braunfels Lodge, Zoey Caldwell from Bexar Lodge, Meg Ann Kosub from Seguin
Lodge and Colton Krueger from Converse Lodge. Each year one student from each of the five Home Office regions is chosen to receive these scholarships. This year there were 55 total applicants. The scholarship recipients are chosen by a panel of volunteer educators
from Comfort. The applications are judged on neatness, grammar, spelling and structure of the 300-word essay “What Hermann Sons Life Means to Me” and the student’s ability to follow the application guidelines. See SCHOLARSHIP, Pg. 16
