Top producing agents of 2021 honored FREDERICKSBURG – The beautiful Hill Country was the setting for the annual Agents’ Award Weekend honoring agents who qualified for club membership based on their sales in 2021.

Linda Mattocks was the top producing agent for 2021 and was also the only Last Agent Standing qualifier – she submitted at least one application every month of the year.

Summer Camp fun under way in Comfort!

Camp 2022 has opened and campers are having loads of fun enjoying many traditional and new activities at the Riverside and Hilltop sites in Comfort! Online registration is still under way online. However, Session 5 for girls, July 10-16, is now closed. Remaining session dates include July 3-9; July 10-16; July 17-23; and the Mini-Camp Session for our younger juniors, July 28-31.

We need to help and support our agents

By EUGENE ZOLLINGER President and CEO We recently held the Agent’s Award weekend the 3-5 of June . At the banquet, I shared some things with the award-winning agents, and I would like to use this opportunity to share them with the rest of the agents and Eugene Zollinger all our members .

I again would like to congratulate all our top-selling agents for their achievements .

We depend on them, we need them . We

need all our agents to be successful . When they are successful, we are successful .

Since I got here, I have been focused on implementing and changing things to help our agents be more successful . We need to help remove all roadblocks and give them the tools they need to do what they need to do .

We need to give them more products and better pricing . Our agents need to be able to sell online and not have to do everything in person so we have been working on modernizing to help them be more productive and efficient .

Before I came to Hermann Sons Life, I owned an insurance agency, so I know

what it takes for an agent to be successful .

We need more agents and I encourage anyone interested to apply online . Come visit our Sales Department and see about coming on board to help us grow . We also have three open Regional Sales Manager positions we need to fill . These managers help coach, mentor, train and recruit new agents .

I want all our agents and members to continue sharing their ideas with us to help us become better every day . For Hermann Sons Life to be able to continue in a positive direction, we need our agents to be the best they can be, and we need to help and support them do that .

Dance registration opens online Hermann Sons Life School of Dance registration for 2022-2023 has opened online. Informational brochures with registration instructions have been mailed to households with eligible juniors who have not previously registered. Returning dancers will receive an email.

Several employees and friends are holding up the long tradition of Home Office employee doubles league bowling. The friendly competition goes back many years and originated at the Hermann Sons Life San Antonio Home Association bowling lanes next door to the Home Office. Since the closing of those lanes, employees play at the AMF Ponderosa Bowling Lanes in San Antonio. The results for this year’s competition were Carol Swan and Candice Scheibe, first place; Cindy Ledwig and John Kelly, second place; Dana Henderson and Mary Pruitt, third place; Tammy Haecker and Fannie Davis, fourth place; Cecily Kelly and James Smith, fifth place; and Elaine Hernandez Soto and Jimmy Scheibe, sixth place. League play will kick off again in January 2023.

Agents gather in Hill Country for Awards Weekend Cont’d. from Pg. 1 To qualify for the President's Club, agents must write at least 12 applications and generate at least $30,000 in premium income. Qualifications for the Executive Club is at least 12 applications written and at least $12,000 in premium income.

“With such a challenging environment the last two years, these agents’ achievements are a testament to their resilience and dedication,” Vice President of Sales Robin Czarnek said. “We are very blessed to have so many great agents as a part of the Hermann Sons Life family and are so proud of their success, especially considering the obstacles in their way.”

The weekend was held Friday through Sunday, June 3-5. Agents, their guests, officers and directors stayed at the Inn on Barons Creek in Fredericksburg.

On Friday evening, a reception, dinner and live music was held at

Hilltop Camp with Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and counselors as hosts. The Camp’s kitchen staff prepared a meal of fajitas and all the trimmings. The agents and guests enjoyed visiting with the counselors, some from overseas.

Ian and Robin welcomed everyone, and Board Chair Kimberly Krueger congratulated the agents and commended them for their hard work and dedication to Hermann Sons Life.

The counselors shared a Camp prayer before the meal. Mason Lively entertained with an acoustic set to end the night.

Following breakfast at the inn Saturday morning, everyone was free to explore and enjoy the sights of Fredericksburg.

The Awards Banquet was held that evening at the historic Albert Icehouse and Dance Hall in Stonewall. Following a social hour, everyone enjoyed a barbecue meal.

Zollinger opened the awards presentation by expressing his gratitude to the agents.

“You are the best of the best,” he said.

Eugene said it was his goal to give the agents all the tools they needed to be successful, such as the new administration system that is currently being implemented at the Home Office and other enhancements to keep up with today’s technological advancements.

“I appreciate you all,” Eugene said.

“We’re dependent on you – you are the leaders and the mentors.”

Eugene told the award-winning agents Hermann Sons Life cannot turn its decline around without them.

“If you are not successful, then we are not successful.”

Following the award presentations, a dance was held featuring the band “Fast Movin’ Train.

The weekend concluded with breakfast on Sunday at the inn.

Chair of the Board Kim Krueger spoke before dinner Friday evening during the Agents’ Award Weekend and commended the top selling agents. Friday’s social and dinner was held at Hilltop Camp.

Two receive gift cards for recommendations

What can I do to make an impact, a difference?

By ROBIN CZARNEK Vice President of Sales Columbine…Parkland...Sutherland Springs…Uvalde. Once names known only to those in their areas, now internationally renowned carrying a title no one ever hopes to carry and unfortunately, those are but a few of the many that carry this burden. This topic is a deeply personal one to me and to so many that I love.

When I first heard about Uvalde, it brought up the same anxiousness that every one of these senseless acts of violence does. My daughter Haley’s best friend Trisha was a regular attendee at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs (FBCSS) which meant that Haley joined Trisha for Sunday services or other youth events at times. FBCSS was a tremendous blessing to Trisha when she and her siblings lost their mom in a tragic car accident at a young age. FBCSS became more like family to Trisha and her siblings. Being a part of Trisha’s life, our family also joined Trisha at FBCSS services occasionally and in doing so, we were able to meet some amazing people – Pastor Frank Pomeroy and his wife, Sherri and the incredible Karla Holcombe to name a few.

The Pomeroys lost their beloved Annabelle in the 2017 shooting at FBCSS. They carry on Annabelle’s legacy of love and compassion for others, proof that evil did not win. be able to smile and laugh in the midst of chaos and kids screaming. Watching Karla drive a van full of wild teenagers to a bible camp or youth group trip with an enormous smile on her face is a memory I cherish. Karla Holcombe, along with several of her family members, lost their lives in the shooting at the church in Sutherland Springs. While the devastation Sutherland Springs has experienced is unimaginable, their resilience has been nothing short of remarkable. They have made it their mission statement

Being reminded of all these senseless tragedies has me reflecting on doing my part and what my part really is. I am reminded of the quote by John Wesley, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”

Am I doing the good I can? Am I lifting others up? Am I using my words to build others up rather than tear others down? Thankfully, I have some wonderful examples in Pastor Frank, Sherri

While we can’t say that by doing good it could have prevented these tragedies, I am convinced that one small act of kindness can change the trajectory of someone’s life, and we never know what kind of an impact we can have. Doing good has the power to impact lives and compel others to do the same.

I am making a commitment to

get more involved and do what I can to do good and make a difference in my community. While I have a long way to go, I am committed to waking up each day and asking myself, “What can I do to make an impact?” I hope that you will join me. Our future depends upon our actions. Our children deserve better. Our world deserves better.

Comfort Lodge will meet Aug. 13 at Hilltop site COMFORT – The next Comfort Lodge gathering will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Hilltop Camp site. The event will begin at 12 p.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. and the August meeting will follow the meal.

Members will be able to swim and enjoy games, including Gaga ball, yard games and dominoes. To get an accurate head count for the meal, members are asked to RSVP to Vice President Pamela Nentwich by emailing hsyc4h@hctc.net or calling/texting 210-218-8330.

The annual picnic was held at the Retirement Home with residents on May 15. Guests in attendance were treated to a catered meal from Bill Miller’s as well as oatmeal cake provided by the Retirement Home staff.

Around 40 people were in attendance.

Columbia Lodge pioneers receive membership pins DALLAS – Columbia Lodge recognized six members during a membership pin ceremony held May 1.

Past Chair of the Board Sandra Jones presented 50-year pins to Oscar Oswalt and David Wilbanks who also accepted a pin for his wife Wanda. Sixtyyear pins were presented to Tommy Kirk and he accepted a pin for his sister Tammy Kirk Williams. Darlene Kimberlain Hampton received her 70-year membership pin. All these recipients had stories to tell. It’s

always nice to hear from those who spent their youth in the Hall. A special meal of lasagna and salad from Angelo’s was served.

Two of the pin-recipients, Oscar and Tommy, are members carrying on the tradition of league bowling. The sanctioned league dissolved years ago when the venue Big Town Bowling Lanes was to be demolished.

This reporter was invited to meet them the next night at their bowling season’s finale.

Dallas Lodge to meet July 24 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet at 1 p.m. on July 24. At the May meeting, Director David Wolf and wife Pam were in attendance. They reside in Graham and are members of Wichita Falls Lodge.

David was recently re-elected to the Board of Directors at the May convention. He spoke on the Convention Assembly, insurance and annuities and presented membership pins.

The pin recipients in attendance were Sharon Smith, 70 years; Rose Nelson, 60 years; and Joan Sanford, 60 years.

They all had family members in attendance.

Other members who will receive membership pins are James F. Haller of Waco, 75 years; David C. LeCour of Rockwall, 70 years; Robert T. Mullins Jr. of Dallas, 60 years; and Robert L. Simon, Jr. of Mandeville, LA., 70 years.

Terri Holmes, David Lewis, Cecilia Phillips, Gilbert Shelly and Steve Schellenberg attended the Convention.

These days they are rolling balls and striking out at AMF Bolero Bowl in Garland in the Sons of Hermann-Friendship League. There are still 11 members bowling.

The 48th Hermann Sons Life Convention was held in San Marcos May 9-12. Attending from the lodge were delegate Gilbert Shelby and Laws Committee member David Lewis.

Terri Holmes served as the Dallas Lodge delegate and Cecilia Phillips attended as a guest.

Round Top Lodge earns recognition ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge was awarded a certificate of achievement for meeting the 2021 new member goal during the Convention Assembly held in May. Lila Garlin presented Agent Linda Mattocks an arrangement of flowers for all her hard work.

The lodge was scheduled to meet June 23. At the May meeting, there were 19 members in attendance and one guest, Barnell Albers.

Lockhart Lodge donates FFA T-shirts LOCKHART - Lockhart met Sunday, June 5, at Smitty’s Market. Community Coordinator Nancy Hess reported on the Join Hands Day Project.

She and McKenzie Hess went to the Prairie Lea FFA Banquet and presented FFA T-shirts donated by the lodge to the students. One of the students, Sarah Clarkson, is a 2022 graduate and a member of the lodge.

A moment of silence was observed for Marvin Sandler who died on March 17, 2022, at the age of 91. Marvin was a member since 1970.

Delegates Ann Schroeder and Ray Pfefferkorn attended the Convention Assembly held May 9-12 in San Marcos. Ann and Ray reported they enjoyed the convention and learned a lot.

Prayers were offered for Floyd Braun and all the children and teachers killed in the Uvalde school shooting. It was decided to send individual donations, a card and a check from the lodge.

Lila reported on the Convention Assembly. She announced the names of the new Board of Directors. She also learned the Retirement Home is available

to policy holders that have had a policy for at least three years.

There is now a $2,000 annual fee and currently there are 20 residents.

Happy Birthday was sung for Lila and Dwight Nittschke.

Happy anniversary wishes went to Barnell and La Verne Albers. They celebrated 60 years in April.

Attendance-prizes winners were La Verne Albers, Margie Stardig, Bob Porter, Jeanette Schoenst and Mary Rauch.

Moulton awards scholarship Moulton Lodge awarded a $500 scholarship to Aidan Kloesel, a 2022 Flatonia High School graduate. Aidan will attend Texas State University to pursue studies in construction site management. He is the son of Tara and Johnny Kloesel all of Moulton.

Aidan is a member of the lodge and attended Hermann Sons Life Camp.

Fort Worth Lodge welcomes two new juniors FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge welcomes two new junior members. They are brothers Gus Fredenburg and Abbott Fredenburg. The next meeting will be in September. Date and place will be announced later.

Camp t-shirts have been mailed to all the campers that requested them. Hope to see lots of pictures in the upcoming months for the lodge article.

Reaching his 50-year membership milestone is Robert Lampman. Robert joined the lodge on July 2, 1972.

Congratulations to junior member Caden Jones. Caden received the Dylan Ellis Sportsmanship Award for the winter bowling league. This award is given by the coaches and this is just part of what they had to say about Caden. They said they see him cheering on his fellow bowlers and encouraging them if they are having a bad day.

He is kind and funny with his league mates, comes early to practice and seeks advice and takes the advice seriously and is always willing to help when asked.

Caden is a fourth-generation member. He is the son of Scott and Shannon Jones, brother to Makayla Hutzel and is the

grandson of Ronnie and Darlene Jones and Sam and Sandra Jones.

Bellville holds meeting BELLVILLE – Bellville Lodge members took boxes of goodies to the Bellville Police Department as a “thank you” for their service on May 2 in observance of Join Hands Day. The lodge first held its noon meeting at El Jimador Restaurant in Bellville before visiting the police station. Members discussed the status of the lodge.

Recent birthday celebrants were Marie Herridge in March and Patsy Marek in April.

In February, members met at the El Jimador Restaurant.

Three past campers receive scholarships COMFORT – The three recipients of the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship for 2022 have been named. The scholarships are awarded to past campers in the amount of $1,000 each.

The recipients are Taylor Adams of Boerne, daughter of Susan Pick and a member of Jourdanton Lodge; Ryann McAnelly of Spring Branch, daughter of Jessica and Jay McAnelly and a member of Spring Branch Lodge; and Dimi Poulos of Luling, daughter of Stephanie and Gabe Poulos and a member of Niederwald Lodge.

The scholarship fund was created in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney, a former camper and counselor who passed away in 1998 at the age of 21 after losing her battle with leukemia.

To be eligible, students must be a member in good standing, complete an application and write an essay titled, “How being a Hermann Sons Life camper shaped the person I am today.”

TAYLOR ADAMS is a graduate of Boerne High School. She plans to attend San Angelo State University and major in education and become a kindergarten teacher. She attended Camp for four years.

In high school, Taylor was junior varsity volleyball captain, was a 4-H member, an FFA member, won first team All-District honors in varsity volleyball her junior year and second team All-District honors her senior year and was team captain. Also, her senior year she had all academic honors. She played club volleyball and was active at her church in the youth group and bible study.

In her essay, Taylor wrote, “I can still remember the night before I left for camp for the first time, I was super nervous about staying away from my family for the first time.

“I had not left my mom’s side since I lost my hearing at the age of three.

“Would I make friends, would they laugh at me, would they understand? The thoughts running through my head were endless.

“God heard my prayers for sure.

What would be the chances that my camp counselor was hard of hearing too? I was so thankful for everything she did for me that week.

“Can you believe it ... she understood me and my life! She was an angel and she made sure that I was included, made friends, and felt like a normal kid for the first time in my life.

“It started off being the scariest thing I have ever done and ended up being exactly what I needed to gain the confidence and selflove that I needed. I will forever be grateful for that summer.”

RYANN McANELLY is a graduate of Smithson Valley High School. She plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin and major in biology pre-med to become a mental health professional/doctor. Ryann is a member of Spring Branch Lodge. She attended camp for five years and was in the CIT program and was a junior counselor. Ryann graduated in the top 2 percent of her class summa cum laude. Her high school activities included varsity dance, student council, was vice president of the National Honor Society, president of Spanish Club, was a National Merit Rural Scholar, AP Scholar, FACS and was a Comal ISD Superintendent Advisory Board member. Ryann had many other honors and accomplishments during high school and was an active volunteer in several organizations.

In her essay, Ryann wrote, “One morning, my lifelong friend Julia came up with the brilliant idea that we should sign up for golf lessons.

golf. I caved again and showed up the next day ready to fail again. To my surprise, everything I learned the first day was slowly becoming routine and my swings got progressively better.

“Today, I am still not amazing at golf, but golf taught me some valuable lessons as well as my time as a Hermann Sons Life camper and dancer. The lessons included the cliche, “never be afraid to try something new.

“The reason I tell you this story is golf and Hermann Sons Life Camp are two major things that shaped who I am today. I remember the fear of being away from home and the fear of learning something new, but like golf I was ready for the challenge. I came back every year until I was eligible to become a CIT (something I dreamt of) and then a junior counselor. I never shy from a challenge and am so thankful and blessed by my experiences and lessons learned.”

DIMI POULOS is a graduate of Luling High School. She plans to attend Tarleton State University and major in elementary education. She wants to become a kindergarten to second-grade teacher in a rural area. She attended

Camp for four years.

While in high school, Dimi was a member of the Key Club serving as vice president, was Student Council vice president and president and was class president. She also participated in varsity golf and was MVP, was in band, was cheer captain, was in Student Athletic Training, Girl Scouts, National Honor Society serving as parliamentarian and was in Skills USA. In her essay, Dimi wrote, “That first Camp experience was scary, but the best time I ever had. Each year as I got older, Camp only got better!

“With Camp, I was able to meet and build relationships with people from all over Texas. It was nice every year, to meet new people and reunite with old Camp friends. I have everlasting friendships all because of people that I met at Camp.

“Camp was something that I looked forward to every year. I did learn that I had to sacrifice to make Camp happen. I am a hard worker and set goals. As I wanted to attend Camp every year, it was not something that was guaranteed, but I had to work for it. I

have learned when you really want something and finances are involved you have to work hard, sacrifice and manage your money.

“Camp made me more selective about my choices. My first year, I remember loving dance but I also took cheer at Hermann Sons Life Camp my seventh grade year.

That year I placed in the show for cheer. The next year, I did cheer tryouts at school and made it on the Cheer Squad. I have been passionate about cheer and have continued being part of the Cheer Squad. Cheer helped with me becoming a leader as I have been captain all five years of cheer.

“I remember when I took pottery class during Camp. I made a piece for my mom. I wanted to make my mom something in memory of my sister who passed away. When I think about it now, I was able to express myself and open up about my feelings with my hands. I got to talk to my mom on why I made the piece for her, but that piece of art opened my feelings of the situation at the time. I learned tools that still help me today to manage stress and feelings.”

Retirement Home awards four senior scholarships COMFORT – The four recipients of the Hermann Sons Life Retirement Home Scholarships for 2022 have been named.

They are Taylor Adams of Boerne, daughter of Susan Pick and a member of Jourdanton Lodge; Natalie Tayte Burkholder of Boerne, daughter of James and Alison Burkholder and a member of Boerne Lodge; Grant Friar of Boerne, son of Carlin and Susan Friar and a member of Paul Vogt Lodge; and Taylor Eve Majewski of Giddings, daughter of Neal and Kelly Majewski and a member of Giddings Lodge.

Each student will receive $1,500 to further their education.

To be eligible, students must be a member in good standing, complete an application and write an essay titled “What Hermann Sons Life Means to Me.” TAYLOR ADAMS is a graduate of Boerne High School. She plans to attend San Angelo State University and major in education and become a kindergarten teacher. She attended Camp for four years.

In high school Taylor was junior varsity volleyball captain, was a 4-H member, an FFA member, won first team All-District honors in varsity volleyball her junior year and second team All-District honors her senior year and was team captain. Also, her senior year she had all academic honors. She played club volleyball and was active at her church in the youth group and bible study.

In her essay, Taylor wrote, “I can still remember the night before I left for camp for the first time, I was super nervous about staying away from my family for the first time.

“I had not left my mom’s side since I lost my hearing at the age of three.

“Would I make friends, would they laugh at me, would they understand. The thoughts running through my head were endless.

“It started off being the scariest thing I have ever done and ended up being exactly what I needed to gain the confidence and selflove that I needed. I will forever be grateful for that summer.”

NATALIE TAYTE BURKHOLDER is a graduate of Texas Connection Academy at Houston. She plans to attend Loyola University of New Orleans. She will major in biological sciences/pre-dental and hopes to become a dentist or orthodontist and open a practice in the Hill Country.

Natalie was in the Hermann Sons Life dance program for four years. She was a camper for three years, and became a counselor and was a lifeguard for two years.

In her essay, Natalie wrote, “To me, Hermann Sons Life is more than just an organization, it is a family!

“I have been involved with Hermann Sons Life for many years, starting with dance. My friends and I enjoyed the music, dancing, and extra time spent with each other outside of school. We performed various types of dances

from ballet to tap to hip hop for the Christmas and end-of-year recitals. I will treasure those days in our fancy costumes as one treasures their time spent with family.

“After my last year as a camper, I became a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) that next summer. Then, I applied to be a counselor and lifeguard the following summer. That taught me many skills including leadership, organization, time management and responsibility.

I love being able to share my joy, experiences and passion of Hermann Sons Life Camp with the campers!

“As high school graduation approaches, I reflect on how far I have come over the past ten years and my experiences with the Hermann Sons Life family. Now, preparing to head off to college, I will never forget the many life lessons Hermann Sons Life has taught me. I will cherish the lifelong friendships I have made and the people who have contributed to my many years as a camper, counselor and lifeguard.”

GRANT FRIAR is a graduate of Boerne Samuel V. Champion High School. He plans to attend the University of Texas San Antonio and study cyber security. He attended Camp for five years.

In his essay, Grant wrote, “Hermann Sons has always been a part of my life. As with many kids, Camp each summer was always a fantastic time. My five years at

Camp were always extremely fun.

It also allowed me to meet new people, make new friends and forge memories that will last a lifetime. Perhaps more importantly they gave me a chance to develop leadership skills, friendships, a little discipline and it allowed me to participate in activities that were out of my comfort zone.

“Although camp was always a fantastic time, it wasn’t my only connection with Hermann Sons Life. For almost as long as I can remember, we have had interactions with the organization and our lodge. I remember meeting so many new people at holiday parties, seeing family and friends, sitting on Santa’s lap and taking family pictures in front of the Christmas tree. There were songs, amazing people, and all manner of food contributed by various members; all of which forged memories I will never forget.

While Camp in a word may have been an adventure, Hermann Sons Life would best be described as family.”

TAYLOR EVE MAJEWSKI is a graduate of Giddings High School. She plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in education. She hopes to assist special education individuals and help their families find support and services. Taylor danced in the Hermann Sons Life dance program for two years.

In her essay, Taylor wrote: “I

have been a member of Giddings Lodge since 2009. When my family relocated to Giddings in 2009, we did not know anyone in the area and were looking for ways to join the community. A community member shared with my parents about the Hermann Sons Life dance classes. It did not take long for us to realize what a wonderful organization Hermann Sons Life is. In a new community, we instantly felt welcomed by this organization. I still remember the woman who came to our home and completed my life insurance policy and how friendly she was. I made so many friends during the dance program.

“It was also a wonderful feeling when I was recognized as a Shining Star in the Hermann Sons Life newspaper. I love that this organization has fulfilling activities for the youth in our community.

I’m also excited to be able to use the Member Perks as I become an adult and become responsible for my own expenses.

“I will be eternally grateful for Hermann Sons Life and how it was a huge part of childhood.

Moving to a new town and not knowing anyone was difficult for our family; however, this organization made the transition so much easier. In the future, I will be happy to share my experiences with other individuals and encourage them to join Hermann Sons Life as well.”

KARA BRYANN ACKER graduated from Smithson Valley High School in Spring Branch. She is a member of Spring Branch Lodge. Kara was a member of the National Honor Society. She danced with Hermann Sons Life Hill Country School of Dance for 13 years and was a dance teacher assistant her last two years. Kara will attend Blinn College in Brenham this fall. She is the daughter of Bryan and Rita Acker of Spring Branch and granddaughter of Annette Gass of Spring Branch and Robert and Darlene Acker of New Braunfels.

MORGAN DELANE BECKA graduated from Caldwell High School and was the 2022 valedictorian. She is a member of Deanville Lodge. In high school, she was the recipient of the Hornet Award in Cross Country. Morgan will attend Texas A&M to study biochemistry and plans to become a neuroscientist. EMILY CUNNINGHAM graduated from Navarro High School in Geronimo as a certified nurse assistant and as a member of the National Technical Honor Society. She is a member of Seguin Lodge. She will attend Texas State University in San Marcos this fall majoring in pre-nursing. Emily was active in Hermann Sons Life dance for eight years, attended Camp and was a CIT. In high school, Emily was active in track, FFA and was a member of the NHS Dazzler Dance Team all four years of high school. She is the daughter of Patrick and Michelle Cunningham and the granddaughter of Richard and Sandra Cunningham of Seguin.

Triplets GRANT, CHLOE and BLAKE FRIAR graduated from Boerne-Samuel V. Champion High School. They are members of the Paul Vogt Lodge in Boerne. Grant will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio to study cyber security. Chloe will be attending Angelo State University to pursue a degree in nursing and Blake will attend St. Phillips Radiology Program this spring to become an MRI tech. Grant, Chloe and Blake are the children of Carlin and Susan Friar. They are fourthgeneration Hermann Sons Life members thanks to their grandparents Betty and Fred Friar. Their grandparents also include Don and Dee McAuslan and Bill Murphy. It was an honor for their father to present the three with their diplomas during the graduation ceremony as he is serving his third term on the Boerne ISD School Board.

She has qualified for Nationals for TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators) which will be held in Washington D.C. this summer. Madalyn played French horn in the East Central Golden Hornet Band. This spring the band competed in UIL and received the Sweepstakes Award, one of the highest rankings.

He has contributed hundreds of hours to his community through local service projects and leading the local service flag fund-raiser for the past few years. BLAKE STERLING MILLER graduated magna cum laude from East Central High School. A member of Mission Alamo Lodge, he attended Hermann Sons Life Camp from ages 9-13. While in high school he was a member of the National Honor Society, four-year member of the varsity golf team serving as captain both his junior and senior years. Blake was also a member of the varsity football team his junior and senior year serving as captain his senior year. COLE WINNINGHAM graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Energy Commerce. He has started his career as a landman. He is a member of Harmonia Lodge and is the son of Mike and Pam Winningham.

RILEY SMITH graduated from Southwest High School.

He is a member of Macdona Lodge. He plans to attend St. Phillips College to earn an Air Frame and Powerplant Technician Certificate. While attending high school, Riley was enrolled in an aviation class that built an RV-12 airplane under the supervision of many aviation mentors including pilots and mechanics. Riley was also the softball team manager for four years. A lifelong member of Hermann Sons Life, he attended Camp for five years, became a CIT 1 and then a counselor in the summer of 2021.

XANDER M. ZERR graduated magna cum laude from Clear Brook High School in Friendswood where he was captain of the swimming and water polo teams his senior year. He will attend Texas A&M in College Station in the fall majoring in engineering. He attended Hermann Sons Life Camp for five years where he had such great experiences he returned as a counselor-in-training (CIT) for two years and will return as a counselor this summer.

Xander is also a 1st Dan Black Belt in karate. Xander’s late grandfather, Richard D. Zerr, was a member of Hondo Lodge since 1985. Xander has been a member of Hermann Sons Life since 2004. His parents Mary Jo and Randell Zerr and his brother Bryson are also members.

Stockdale Lodge members joined with Boy Scouts Pack 114, Troop 114 and Troop 118 for a Join Hands Day project held May 27. The volunteers located veterans’ grave sites at Stockdale Cemetery and the scouts placed U.S. and confederate flags on the graves in honor of Memorial Day. For Join Hands Day, Lockhart Lodge joined hands with the Prairie Lea Independent School District FFA and purchased and printed T-shirts for the FFA students to celebrate the newly formed FFA Chapter. It was chartered and led by Erin Hess, a first-year ag teacher and lodge member since 1999. Nancy Hess, Erin’s grandmother, and Mckenzie Hess, (Erin’s sister) attended the end-of-year FFA banquet and, along with Erin, presented the shirts to the students. FFA student Sarah Elizabeth Clarkson is a 2022 graduate and a member of the lodge since 2017. Cibolo Lodge welcomes two new junior members CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will meet Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. An officers meeting will be held in July.

There will be lots of household items for sale and proceeds will benefit the Quilts of Valor, this year’s Matching Funds recipient.

In May, the Scholarship Committee met and awarded Bret Gray a $1,100 scholarship, $750 from the lodge and $350 from the Brenda Fey Memorial Fund.

Bret was present to receive his scholarship certificate and recapped his first year of college.

He is in his first year in the PGM Program, (professional golf management program) at Sam Houston State University.

Seguin Lodge honors three scholarship recipients SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge honored three lodge scholarship winners at the May meeting.

The recipients were E.J. Major, Emily Cunningham and Shelby Passante.

E.J. is planning to attend New Mexico State University. His parents are Eugene and Laura Major and his grandmother is Evelyn Neumann. Emily Cunningham is planning to attend Texas State University. She is the daughter of Patrick and Michelle Cunningham. Shelby Passante will attend San Antonio College. She is the daughter of Stacy Passante.

Seven delegates attended the Convention Assembly in San Marcos held in May. They were Tom Allison, Howard Huebner, Cheryl Kolbe, Annette Roecker, Tammy Beutnagel, Allen Gescheidle and Paul Gescheidle.

They said they enjoyed themselves and learned a lot about the future of Hermann Sons Life.

Brenham Lodge welcomes two new junior members BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge will meet Friday, July 8, at the lodge hall, 304 E. Germania.

Social time starts at 5:30 p.m., the potluck meal is served at 7 p.m. and the meeting starts at 8 p.m. Members are asked to bring food for the meal and/or a dessert.

At the June meeting, the lodge welcomed two new junior members, Trevor and Austin Locke. They were recommended by Karen Locke.

A moment of silence was observed for deceased member Shirley Mae Smith.

The trustees reported Jerry Gass had mowed the grounds and President Marcus Ethridge trimmed the entry way.

Marcus reminded members of several event dates. Camp started on June 12 and Open House was June 11. Flag Day was June 14 and the statewide bowling tournament is July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7. Dance class registration opens in June.

Celebrating birthdays in June and July are Tamra Morash, Levi Gass, Karl Gass, Kyle Gass and Karen Steiger.

Anniversary celebrants in June and July are Marilyn and Rick Weidman, 51 years; Marcus and Jennifer Ethridge, 23 years; Steve and Georgia Hartmann, 55 years; and John and Kathy Harper, 37 years.

Myron Ethridge assisted in the drawing of door prizes. The winners were Myron and Tamra Morash who donated her winnings to the Building Fund.

Following the meeting, members enjoyed a fried fish dinner.

Deanville presents two scholarships DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge presented Morgan Becka and Delayna Hold each $500 scholarships during the May meeting.

Morgan and Delayna are both fourth generation lodge members and are granddaughters of President Donnie Blinka. Both girls have been involved in the lodge by helping with the drivethru fund-raisers for the local

Hospice and the annual Fourth of July celebration.

In the essay required for the scholarship, both girls wrote about their experience of attending Hermann Sons Life Camp and the pride they have in being Deanville Lodge members. They expressed their appreciation to the lodge for the scholarship they received.

Tammy Jones gave a report on the 48th Hermann Sons Life Convention Assembly held May 9-12.

Donnie reported $250 was presented to SAMMS food bank for Join Hands Day. Members planned to make final preparations for the Fourth of July celebration at the June meeting.

NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Lodge will not meet in July due to the Fourth of July holiday. Tommy Daum will host the August meeting. The lodge will provide meat and members are asked to bring sides and/or desserts.

At the June 5 meeting, the hall was decorated with seashells as a salute to summer.

The lodge welcomed five new members.

Agent Shirley Huebinger was honored for qualifying for Executive Club in 2021 at the Agents’ Award Banquet held June 4.

It was announced School of Dance registration will begin in June.

Happy Birthday was sung to Tommy Daum. Celebrating anniversaries were Jo and Harvey Heideman, 60 years; Rennie and Sandra Guenther, 60 years; and James and Leola Stolte, 69 years.

Bandera County Lodge awards Camp scholarships Right - Bandera County Lodge long-time member Lee Fields recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

LAKEHILLS – Bandera County Lodge recently held a Zoom meeting.

Members were reminded the lodge needs nine new members to reach the 2022 membership goal.

President Gary Reile stressed that more members need to get involved in the lodge and attend meetings.

Dance teacher Kristin Courtney reported classes were being held at the Lakehills Civic Center, and the dance recital was scheduled for June 4. A pizza party for the dancers and their

It was reported the Retirement Home is accepting donations for renovations. There are currently 19 residents in the home.

The cost Is $500 to move in plus a $2,000 annual fee. The lodge discussed sponsoring a resident to help with the cost and perhaps starting a fund with other lodges.

Old Glory to meet again on Sept. 11 OLD GLORY – Old Glory Lodge will meet on Sept. 11, 2022. The lodge will furnish hamburgers and members are asked to bring desserts.

At the June meeting, Diane Smith gave a report of the Convention Assembly and brought a photo taken of those present.

During the convention, Diane accepted a certificate of achievement on behalf of the lodge awarded for reaching the membership goal of six new members in 2021.

Members are praying for Verlene Carzine who is on the sick list.

Birthday celebrant for June was Darrell Richards.

Since there are no meetings in July and August, Happy Birthday wishes were extended to Anita Dozier and Gladys Vahlenkamp. They will both be 96 years old in July.

Kirby Lodge will hold next meeting on Aug. 1 KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will not hold a July meeting due to the July Fourth holiday. The next meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. A main dish will be provided, and members are asked to bring sides and dessert.

Members are reminded to let others know about Hermann Sons Life and how they can apply for a policy. The lodge’s membership goal this year is 15 new members.

Congratulations to Agent Angela Netherton who was recognized for writing the most 100 Percent Families in 2021 and to Agent Judy Schulmeier who received a plaque for qualifying for the Executive Club.

The lodge scholarship was awarded to Kylie McQuatters at the Flag Day ceremony.

The Flag Day ceremony was held June 14 at the Kirby Fire Station on Ackermann Road.

Thank you to everyone who attended the ceremony and to Judy Schulmeier for organizing the event. Judy presented brand new United States and Texas flags to several organizations in Kirby. This effort was spearheaded by B.J. Voight who in May held a community garage sale in Kirby and donated all proceeds to purchase new flags.

She received several donations from community members and the lodge donated enough money to purchase three Texas flags needed for this endeavor. United States Flags and Texas Flags were presented to the Kirby Fire Station, the Kirby Police Station and the VFW. United States flags were also presented to the Senior Citizen Center, Kirby City Hall and Friendship Park. Thank you to B.J. Voight and Judy Schulmeier for making this event special this year.

The Lodge is planning an excursion to the San Antonio River one Saturday in October.

The exact date will be decided in August. There will be a bus or van to pick up members around 10 a.m. that Saturday. A barge ride is planned, and lunch will follow at a restaurant. The lodge will pay for members to attend this outing and non-members will be charged $20. The barge holds up to 40 people so it is important to let someone from

representative or try to attend the August meeting. It is important all members’ voices are heard.

DaCosta Lodge awards three senior scholarships DACOSTA LODGE – DaCosta Lodge will meet July 12 at 6 p.m.

All members are encouraged to attend.

The lodge observed Join Hands Day and Flag Day on June 11 by volunteering at the DaCosta Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fund-raiser event. The community enjoyed a meal, a silent and live auction as well as a public dance featuring Southern Drive Band.

Congratulations to the lodge’s 2022 scholarship winners. They are Cheyann Parks, Hailey Billeaud and Emily Quinn.

Cheyann Parks is a 2022 graduate of Edna High School and plans on pursuing a degree in ag business and management.

Cheyann danced for Hermann Sons Life for 11 years before joining the drill team in high school.

She also attended five years of Camp. Cheyann is active in Girl Scouts and earned Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, was an FFA member for four years and raised and showed market steers, winning Grand Champion Steer in

2019 and 2021.

Hailey Billeaud is a 2022 graduate of Calhoun High School and plans on pursuing a degree in primary education. Hailey danced for Hermann Sons Life for 11 years and attended four years of Camp. Hailey was active in FFA, band and horticulture throughout her years in high school.

Emily Quinn is a 2022 graduate of Victoria East High School and plans on pursuing a degree in kinesiology. Emily danced for Hermann Sons Life for several years and attended camp three years. Emily was active in National Honor Society and served as president, was varsity volleyball manager, varsity girls soccer manager, was a Rho Kappa Society member, was a member of the Latin American Student organization serving as vicepresident and participated in many other community service activities.

Vineta Lodge collecting items for Uvalde teachers SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will meet July 7 and hamburgers, chips and watermelon will be served.

The lodge will collect supplies for teachers of Robb Elementary instead of local student supplies following the tragedy in Uvalde.

Here are some suggestions for supplies with more to come next month: dry erase markers in different colors, PostIt-Notes in different sizes and colors, paper clips in different sizes and styles, adult scissors and boxes of facial tissue. Monetary donations will also be accepted. The lodge will also donate a monetary gift. For more information, call Ruth Bailey at 210-602-5147.

At the recent Convention, the lodge had a first-time delegate, Irene Kace. A newer member, she asked some Hermann Sons Life history questions. Mem-

bers shared some of the history and decided the lodge will add “a walk down memory lane” discussions to monthly meetings and ask members to share their Hermann Sons Life memories.

The first shared memory was about picnics at the Retirement Home. Debbie Jordan reported some lodges would have picnics on the tree-shaded back patio area on Sunday afternoons.

“It was a great time for members and residents to visit and socialize. There would be covered dishes, sodas, water, beer and live music to dance to and enjoy. The children would dance or look around at the ponds and see the fish.

It always seemed that the picnic would be the same Sunday that we were to go to camp.

We would pester my parents to leave the picnic to go to

camp so we could get the bunk we wanted. It rarely worked.

We would get there when the line was very short, and the choice of bunks were limited.

More about Camp at another time. It was also fun to go to the top floor porch to look at all the surrounding areas. We also looked at the gift shop for home-made items,” Debbie said.

Thank you to the members who brought salads and desserts to the last meeting.
