Grand President's Message The importance of junior life products My oldest granddaughter, Kennedy, just left Mimi Camp. What is Mimi Camp you ask? mimi is my wife, Elizabeth, and Camp is a week at our house filled with fun and excitement. Elizabeth and Kennedy look forward to this week each summer. For me it brings back memories of when I would spend time with my grandparents and experience the unique lessons that only a grandparent can teach. These lessons are important to children and help to shape who they will be as adults.

Similarly, the time children spend actively associating with Hermann Sons helps them to develop into stronger more confident adults. Whether it is lessons derived from attending Camp, or volunteering with their local lodge, or being an insurance certificate holder; these are experiences that enhance positive development. But, often we focus so much on how Hermann Sons benefits our junior members that we fail to emphasize how our junior members give back to Hermann Sons.

Just through the purchase of life products for junior members, money is put towards good work done in Texas communities right now. Every time a premium payment is made, the payer of the policy can feel good about what that money goes towards and represents. It represents a desire to give the child a secure financial product; it represents a wish for the junior member to be part of an organization that values community, life and security; it represents old and new family traditions; it represents an opportunity to be part of unique programs like Camp and dance; it represents commitment.

All of our juniors and junior programs add a youthful exuberance to Hermann Sons. Their membership and participation now will set the tone for members in the future.

And when these children become adults, I hope they realize how important it is to keep their life policies and look into purchasing additional policies. It is important for their families and it is important for our Hermann Sons community. Junior programs receive a huge focus from us because we want children to be an integral part of the Hermann Sons community, but it is only by

Kennedy at mimi Camp remaining a part of the community and passing on the tradition that these programs and others are possible.

Next summer Kennedy will get to go to Hermann Sons Youth Camp in addition to Mimi Camp. She is already a Shining Star and recently participated in the Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn.

She doesn’t even know it, but her membership is helping do so much good. And she is getting so much out of her membership.

Five winners chosen in membership campaign Five Hermann Sons members are receiving $100 gift cards as part of the 2016 “Continue the Tradition, Protect the ones You Love” membership Campaign. a total of 374 members recommended a new member in the first six months of the year. Their names were placed in a jar and five were chosen to receive the gift cards. They are Bradley ahr, mission-alamo Lodge; Justin morrison, Spring Branch Lodge; Grace noelle Harker, La Vernia Lodge; elle Vanderzee, Bandera County Lodge; and Brad Dietrich, Harmonia Lodge. Brother ahr recommended the most new members - eight. The lodge with the most members recommending a member was La Vernia Lodge. New members always are welcome. During the summer months, junior membership applications peak because of our wonderful benefits. As recommenders we should contact the parents of these junior members to encourage them to purchase life insurance for themselves so they too can become members of Hermann Sons.

CONVENTION TIME The 47th Grand Lodge Convention will be held at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos April 30-May 3, 2017. In October of this year, the Organization Board composed of the Grand Lodge Executive Committee will meet to determine the number of adult members in each local lodge and the number of delegates to which each local lodge is entitled. The results will be published in the October issue of the Hermann Sons News and each qualified local lodge will be notified of the number of delegates it can send to the convention. Grand Lodge Laws state delegate election should be held in the months of November and December of the year previous to the convention.

It is not too late to increase adult membership and possibly gain a delegate for your lodge. The number of delegates each lodge can send is based on membership as of Oct. 1, 2016. Every active lodge is entitled to one delegate and for every 200 additional adult members, another delegate will be added. For example, if your lodge has a membership of 399 adult members, one additional new member could boost your lodge eligibility to two delegates instead of one.

LOCAL LODGE FINANCIAL STATEMENT The local lodge semi-annual financial report is now due for the period of Jan. 1-June 30, 2016. Lodge secretaries are reminded that the form to be completed can be found in your lodge planner (August section). Please note that your lodge’s Finance Committee should meet to examine all collections and disbursements before completing the written report.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES The Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament will be held the weekends of July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7 in Austin at the Dart Bowling Lanes. This year non-members may participate so they can become more aware of what our organization represents and then possibly become a member. Many of our Grand Lodge officers and employees participate in this annual event.

The Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund Bowl-A-Thon will be held on Aug. 6 at the Oak Hills Bowling Lanes in San Antonio. Lodges may sponsor teams or individuals may bowl for this worthy cause. No average is needed. Just come and enjoy the fun and support the scholarship fund.

The summer has been busy with Camp going strong and registration for the next dance season under way. Dance classes begin the first week of September.

The names of five members were drawn recently at the Home Office as a result of recommendation of a new member. The winners each won a $100 gift card. Five more names will be drawn in January 2017. The more new members you recommend between now and then who join our Hermann Sons family, the more chances you will have to win. Good luck!

Boenig named Creating a legacy of protection new special rep SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons has a new special representative.

He is Dan Boenig, a member of Converse Lodge No. 157.

Brother Boenig joined the Marketing Team in June 2013 as a local lodge agent. He is being appointed as a special representative to take the place of Carol Krauss who is retiring as a special representative but will stay on as a local lodge agent.

He was named a member of the Dan Boenig Grand President’s Club for his production in 2014.

He is active in Converse Lodge where he has been a member for 57 years. He currently serves as vice president.

Brother Boenig is from Converse where he was raised on the family farm. He is the son of Lennert and Edline Boenig and the grandson of Willie and Alma Boenig all of whom are deceased. Prior to their passing, he cared for his parents in their home.

He holds a bachelor of science degree and a master’s degree in agriculture from Texas A&M University.

A licensed life insurance agent, Brother Boenig has 37 years of sales and marketing experience. He worked for 20 years as a district sales manager for two hybrid seed companies and for eight years as an investment representative in the oil and gas industry.

He has a son, Mark, who is married. Mark also is a Hermann Sons member.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve an even bigger role in an organization that I have been a part of for so long,” Brother Boenig said. “And I look forward to helping other agents and Hermann Sons grow.”

“We are excited to have Dan join our Marketing Team,” Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe said. “With Carol retiring, the search for a suitable replacement began for a person who could continue with the vital role of field agent support, while maintaining a healthy production volume.

As you have read, I believe Dan has the experience and knowledge to provide our members and agents with the service and support they deserve. His family history is one of a strong tradition of Hermann Sons membership and involvement. Dan will be an asset to our organization and we welcome him aboard.”

Special representatives are considered full-time employees. Besides selling life insurance and annuity products for Hermann Sons, they also are responsible for working with local lodge agents. There are six special representatives. The other five are Gary Falkenberg and Al Stryk in the Houston area, Marilyn Vogt in the Boerne and Comfort area, Eulla Krueger in the area south of San Antonio and Teresa Saathoff in San Antonio and the Hill Country.

The kiddos are out of school and it’s an opportunity to visit a summer lodge meeting or picnic. DALLAS – Dallas Lodge No. 22 members volunteered at the City of Irving’s sixth annual children’s bicycle festival held at North Lake College on May 7. The festival focuses on providing a free opportunity for children to learn more about safety and bicycling. Activities included a bicycle rodeo, bicycle safety checks and the distribution and proper fitting of 100 bicycle helmets. TWIN SISTERS LODGE NO. 138 – Twin Sisters Lodge No. 138 joined hands with the management and employees of Lowe’s and the community of Blanco and the surrounding area to collect food and monetary donations for the Good Samaritan Center in Blanco. Two full carts of foods and $300 in cash donations were collected.

ZUEHL LODGE NO. 163 – Zuehl Lodge No. 163 joined hands with the local SPJST chapter to make donations to “Hugs from Home” and the Christian Cupboard food pantry in Seguin. KARNES CITY LODGE NO. 215 – Karnes City Lodge No. 215 joined hands with four members of the Roger E. Sides National Honor Society and visited two nursing homes in Karnes City on May 26 and May 31. The members and students played games with the residents. According to Henrietta Fenner, “the students were a big help to our lodge and were excited to be included in our project.” After the events, the students were treated to lunch at Dairy Queen.

While waiting on their food, the students enjoyed playing Farkle, a new game they learned. Abigail Fenner, the lodge’s vice president, made the arrangements for the students to take part in the project.

PAIGE LODGE NO. 154 – Paige Lodge No. 154 joined hands with the Loblolly 4-H Club to collect and distribute suitcases and backpacks for the “Suitcase for Suzy” program. Paige and Kaitlyn Barrington are pictured with the suitcases and backpacks that were delivered to the Bastrop Child Protective Services offices. Similar deliveries were made to the Lee County and Fayette County CPS offices. The suitcases and backpacks, along with the personal care items that also were donated, will be distributed to foster children served by these CPS offices.

Retirement Home Residents take trips to Colorado, New Orleans

On June 2, residents Harvey Tegtmeyer, Joyce Liberato and Harold Forqueran left a rainy Texas for a seven-day visit to Colorado. The first stop was the Great Sand Dunes National Park where thousands of years ago sand accumulated into 700-foot sand dunes along the mountains.

Next stop was the Royal Gorge Railroad for a ride along the Arkansas River with a beautiful view of the river deep into the mountains. They were served breakfast on the train while watching the rafters along the river. Then it was on to Colorado Springs for a visit with Harvey’s sister.

A trip to Cripple Creek was cancelled due to the elevation. They decided to come home one day early.

A Camp staff ice cream social was held June 6.

Assistant Manager Brenda Treiber and Nick Drozd with the help of some residents hosted 80 members of the Hermann Sons Youth Camp staff. Everyone enjoyed ice cream and all the toppings.

After seeing the article about our centennial jewelry in the Hermann Sons News, Jeanne Stapper contacted resident Jane Haberman because she and her sister, Carolyn Hayden, had some jewelrymaking supplies they wanted to donate. The two ladies and

After discussing our Retirement Home Scholarship Fund and how we create craft items for sale, they toured

the Home and facilities.

Among their donations were loose beads, assorted supplies and beautiful alreadycreated necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Proceeds from

Residents Roland and Nora Naumann recently visited New Orleans with their daughter, Julie Sheldon. the sale of their wonderful donations will benefit the Scholarship Fund.

Some of the beads and supplies will be used to benefit yet another of our Home projects. Several Home residents volunteer on Monday mornings at the Comfort Trinity Mission Nursing Home where we host a games party. We make bracelets to be used as prizes for the game winners.

Residents welcome donations of items for making items to sell in Our Scholarship Store. We have the store open year round. If you have a donation for the Home, please contact our manager, Brenda Gunnink, at 830-9952724 or 830-995-2188.

During the week of June 11, Nora and Roland Naumann and their daughter, Julie

Sheldon, made a trip to New Orleans. It was a celebration of their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Julie surprised them by bringing their wedding cake topper. The topper has been on their 25th, 40th and 50th wedding anniversary cakes too. For this special occasion, the topper was placed on a beignet at the Café Du Monde coffee shop.

While visiting New Orleans, they rode in a mule-drawn carriage and on a riverboat.

They enjoyed eating lots of good seafood. Former neighbors from Seguin, Frank and Jerry Larkins, now live in the French Quarter. They took them to lunch at Andrea’s Restaurant. They did a walkSee RESIDENTS, Pg. 15

Golfers to raise money for Camp Discovery SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge No. 1 is looking for golfers who want to play for a good cause.

The 23rd annual Bob Worrick Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, and will once again be played at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.

The tournament benefits Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children with cancer.

The tournament is named in memory of Harmonia Lodge member Bob Worrick, an avid golfer and tournament organizer who lost his battle with cancer in 1994.

golf tournament for an organization that helps those afflicted with cancer and Camp Discovery has been the beneficiary since that time.

Golfers can take part in the tournament by paying their $95 entry fee, which will cover their greens fee, cart and range balls. They will receive a goodie bag and awards luncheon and have a chance to win door prizes. Throwsies and Mulligans will be for sale the day of the tournament.

If they score well enough players can win team prizes and other contest prizes. They also can bid on the items being offered in the silent auction.

Harmonia Lodge is the sponsoring lodge for

the annual tournament. The presenting sponsor is once again Wells Fargo Bank. Jack and Dianne Larned are sponsors for the awards luncheon that will follow the tournament.

The four-person Florida Scramble tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. The Republic Golf Club is located at 4226 S.E. Military Drive.

BANDERA – Students from the Bandera County School of Dance performed tap, ballet and jazz routines at their May recital held at the Bandera High School Auditorium in Bandera.

The theme for the recital was “Dancing Around the World.”

This was the 17th year for this school of dance.

Taytum Moeller and Morgan Williams were recognized for dancing five years.

Emily Brown and Sierra Brown were recognized for dancing 10 years.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Katie Yanta.

Representing the Grand Lodge were Grand President/ CEO Buddy Preuss and Paul Heath, a member of the Grand Finance Committee.

Also present was Bandera County Lodge No. 81 President Eileen Heath.

Parents’ Club officers this year were President Stephanie Brown, Vice President Trisha Brown and Secretary/Treasurer Jo Dee Foreman.

They thanked the parents, dance instructor Katie Yanta, Grand Lodge Benefits Coordinator Cecily Kelly and Bandera County Lodge for their support.

Riedel Wine Tasting event raises funds for window restoration $10,000 crowd-funding goal met

SAN ANTONIO – The Riedel Wine Tasting event on June 24 brings to a close the crowdfunding project for the restoration of the historic stained glass window depicting Hermann the Cherusker.

Harmonia Lodge No. 1 hosted the event to raise additional funds for the stained glass window restoration project.

With the proceeds from the wine tasting, the goal of raising

$10,000 has been met.

Guests at the Riedel Tasting enjoyed wines from Lara Vineyard and Pilot Knob Vineyard while learning about wine glass shape and hearing from Lara Vineyard owners.

They also were able to take home photos that were printed at a photo station by Grand Lodge employees Rebecca Henley and Elaine Soto.

Anna Larie Keith, secretary/treasurer for EdelweissMagnolia Lodge and the Houston Home Association, and husband Paul traveled from Magnolia to attend the event. Anna Larie was in San Antonio in May to present donations of $750 from Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge and $1,000 from the Houston Home Association to go toward the restoration project. Juniors from all over Texas enjoy summer youth camp COMFORT – The 2016 summer season at Hermann Sons Youth Camp is quickly coming to a close. Junior members from all over Texas and some from outside of Texas have enjoyed time at the beautiful facilities in the Texas Hill Country this

summer.

For only the third summer ever, Camp hosted a halfweek session. All of the campers during that session were able to try parts of the new Challenge course and participate in all daily and nightly activities in a small-

camp setting.

This summer a new activity – jazz dance - was added at Riverside. In this class, campers learned and refined their movement technique and learned a beginner or advanced routine. In addition the Challenge course was

Youth in Action Lone Oak dancers take stage

Apply to be a 2017 CIT COMFORT – The deadline to apply for the 2017 Hermann Sons Youth Camp Counselorin-Training Program is Sept 30.

The CIT program offers past campers educational and leadership experiences, preparing them to be the future leaders at Camp and in their communities.

It is an advanced camper program, which offers participants a leadership curriculum, a mentoring phase and exciting activities.

To be eligible to apply, individuals must be a past HSYC camper, a current member of Hermann Sons and must turn 15 as of Sept. 1, 2017. Eligible applicants will be invited to an interview camp in November.

To apply, complete the online application at www. hermannsons.org (Click on the Camp page and then the Counselor-In-Training page).

Three references are required for each applicant. There is a printable version available as well as a reference form that can be sent electronically to persons completing the reference for the candidate.

Limited spots are available for CITs. If selected, you will pay half of the camper fee and spend one week during the summer of 2017 as a CIT1.

Alumni support Camp COMFORT – The Hermann Sons Youth Camp Alumni Organization was established for individuals who want to stay connected to Camp and help enhance its future through the donation of funds for special Camp projects.

To date the organization has made a gazebo possible at Riverside Camp. The campers use it for drama classes, outdoor reading classes and other activities. It also has made the zip line possible at

the Challenge course, which is used by both Riverside and Hilltop campers.

You can become a member for as little as $100 for past campers and past staff members or $125 for friends of Camp.

Members are invited to annual events. The next event will be held at Camp in late August or early September.

ADKINS – The Lone Oak School of Dance presented its spring recital June 18.

The theme was “Dancing Through the Decades.”

Aston Webster was the dance teacher and will be the teacher for the 2016-17 year.

After the recital each dancer was presented a balloon, trophy and flowers. Those with perfect attendance were recognized.

Parents’ Club officers were President Christy McGrane, Treasurer Beth Williams and Secretary Melinda Zepeda.

Sherri Pieniazek will serve as president in 2016-17 and Beth Williams will return as treasurer.

Beth Williams served as mistress of ceremonies.

NW Bexar recital held June 4 SAN ANTONIO – The Northwest Bexar School of Dance presented its “Colors of the World” recital on June 4 in the Edgewood Theatre of Performing Arts.

Teri Sorenson served as president of the Parents’ Club for the 2015-16 dance year.

Cherene Fabian served as treasurer and Laura Kilgore as costume chairperson.

The senior dancers, Alyssa Tranbarger, Anaelli Rodriguez and Polly Ann Nagle-Pinkham, performed solo routines and then were presented flowers by teacher Linda Jones and family members.

Students who had been dancing 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 years were recognized.

Round Top Lodge presents matching funds to VFD ROUND TOP - Round Top Lodge No. 151 celebrated Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Flag Dag all at the June meeting because the May meeting was cancelled due to bad weather.

The Country Store the lodge sponsored at the Round Top-Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department Feast brought in earnings of more than $500 so with the Matching Funds from the Grand Lodge the lodge was able to present a check to the fire department for more than $1,000. Thanks go to all who brought items and plants for sale, those who worked and those who purchased these items.

A note was received from Hospice Brazos Valley thanking the lodge for the donation sent in memory of Edith Pfeiffer. The family also sent a thank you note.

A donation was sent to the Herman Sons Youth Camp in memory of Ira Mae Hinze who passed away May 15.

HONDO – Hondo Victory Lodge No. 161 hosted an evening meal to honor the recipients of its 2016 Graduate Cash Drawing at the Hermann Sons Hall in Hondo on June 14. It was an evening of fellowship and fun.

The cash drawing prize recipients were Melinda Nicole Salmon, Monica Vega and Stephanie Zinsmeyer.

Melinda Nicole Salmon introduced her parents, Marysa and Marcos Salmon, and Monica Vega introduced her mother, Cathy Tschirhart Vega. Melinda and Monica shared their future plans.

Verlie Nietenhoefer presented each with a check for $200.

Hondo Victory Lodge honored Drawing recipients at the June from left, lodge President Pat Vega, Treasurer Loraine Miller, and Secretary Irene Cox. Fire Safety Council for the “Fire Pup” program. The donation will provide educational materials on fire prevention and safety for 75 children in third through fifth grade.

Following the evening meal, Loraine Miller led the group in 10 games of Keno.

In closing, the group recited “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Houston welcomes five new members in June HOUSTON – Houston Lodge No. 100 will meet Aug. 8 with the lodge furnishing the burgers, hot dogs and ice cream. Members may bring other desserts if they wish.

The meal for the September meeting will be a surprise.

Delegates to the 2017 Grand Lodge Convention will be elected at the October meeting.

For all meetings, social time is at 6 p.m., the meal is served at 7 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:45 p.m. Meetings are held at the Sokol Hall, 1314 West Patton, Houston.

Five new members were welcomed at the June meeting. They are Zooey Hurt, Erin Jochimsen, Karen Jochimsen, Addison Sewell and Richard Vines.

A new method to relay lodge information was announced by President Gary Falkenberg. Bernardo plans ice cream social for August meeting BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge No. 243 will meet Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department Station. An ice cream social will be part of the evening’s activities. The lodge meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month.

The lodge held its summer social on June 11 at the fire station. A Flag Day ceremony was held and included a trivia game about the flag. Members with the correct answers received door prizes.

Investments Harry Werland brought prizes from the Grand Lodge and then presented membership pins. Receiving her 60-year pin was Marilyn G. Findeisen from Sealy. She has been a member since April 6, 1956. Receiving their 50-year pins were Glennon Trojacek, a member since June 6, 1966, and Clinton Maertz, a member since Oct. 20, 1966. Both live in Columbus.

Dunlay donates to ‘Fire Pup’ DUNLAY – Dunlay Lodge No. 285 members approved a donation to the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department during the June 17 meeting.

The donation will be used to sponsor 25 children in the “Fire Pup” safety program.

President Joyce Krenmueller thanked all the members for their help in making the June 5 annual picnic and pin presentation such a success. There

Columbia Lodge to host SonsStock on Aug. 13 DALLAS – Greetings from Columbia Lodge No. 66. There always is something going on at the Sons of Hermann Hall.

It’s summer time in Dallas and that means SonsStock is coming up Aug. 13. Come on out to the Hall for your chance to win the prestigious bestdressed hippie prize. Come play music on the big stage and see the view the pros see when you go to their shows at the Hall. Come enjoy the food including hot dogs and fried pies.

Proceeds from this event will help the lodge do good things in the community. This is the biggest lodge fund-raiser of the year and it will be a success if lots of people attend and support it.

An event is being planned at the Hall for Aug. 14 to benefit the Dallas Police Department.

Rumor has it that Donny Ray Ford and a whole host of other Dallas and Texas notables will be on stage that day to pay tribute to those who serve and those who were recently lost in Dallas. You can contact the Hall to keep abreast of that and other future events.

There also are plans to

screen the documentary film

by Joe Nick Patoski about Texas musician Doug Sahm at the Hall to coincide with the last show Doug ever played which also happened to be at the Sons of Hermann Hall.

This is scheduled for October or November.

Two new members were welcomed at the July meeting.

Dave Moynihan won the attendance prize and the lottery prize so he bought all his friends a couple of rounds after the meeting.

There are lots of volunteer positions available at the Hall.

Everyone enjoyed the hot cakes, sausages and eggs to celebrate the late arrival of the sun.

There are new air-conditioning units operating at the Hall thanks to Columbia Lodge and Dallas Lodge No. 22.

Jo Nicodemus had some eye related surgery and is home recuperating.

There always is swing dancing on Wednesday nights and open mike on Thursday nights so come on down and enjoy the good times.

Brenham Lodge makes donations BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge No. 6 met June 10.

Members voted to make $500 donations from the games fund to the local sheriff’s department, the local police department, Bread Partners, the local hospice program and the local emergency medical services. A $200 donation was approved for the Brenham Fire Department.

The Cheer Committee mailed a get-well card to Raymond Walker. A sympathy card was sent to Dorine and Jeffrey Stoelke following the passing of Dorine’s sister and Jeffrey’s aunt, Estelle Eckermann.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg gave a brief report and recommended the SAFE Plan for those 50 to 89 years of age.

A thank-you note was received from Jackson Bartay. The lodge sponsored his participation in Texas Boys State in Austin through American Legion Post No. 48.

Moulton plans fund-raiser MOULTON – Moulton Lodge No. 59 will meet Aug. 10. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

At the June 8 meeting, it was reported a sympathy card was sent to Ann Hrncir following

the passing of her husband, Gene. A get-well card was sent to Frank Ramirez who is recovering from a broken leg and knee.

Other meetings are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 9.

Hamburgers and all the fixings will be served at that meeting. It starts at 1 p.m.

Mission-Alamo welcomes two new adult members SAN ANTONIO – The men and fathers were honored when Mission-Alamo Lodge No. 80 met in June.

They each received a gift of appreciation and recognition for all they contribute to the lodge all year.

Joyce and J.R. Kneupper provided the roasted pork and members provided the side dishes and desserts for the evening meal.

The theme for the meeting was Hawaiian. Members played games at the end of the evening.

Two new adult members were welcomed. They are Sarah Meagan Pruski and Billy Landrum Odam. Four new junior members were welcomed. They are Elsie Rose Green, Mattie Gail Armstrong, Cooper Dallas

Armstrong and Steven Luke Armstrong.

A get-well card was sent to Dr. Michelle Scanlan, daughter of Jack Larned.

But she is doing well and is back at work.

A thank-you note was received from the Ronald McDonald House for the dinner the lodge provided in observance of Join Hands Day. The name of Henry Harlos was drawn for the progressive pot worth $195 but he was not at the meeting so it will be worth $200 next time.

Jack Larned won split-thepot and donated it “Hugs from Home,” which is where the lodge’s half of the money also will go.

Kerrville to meet Aug. 3

KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge No. 12 will hold its next bi-monthly meeting on Aug. 3 at the Wells Fargo Community Room. A short business meeting will be followed by a potluck meal with the meal theme disclosed on the meeting card members should have received by now.

The lodge donated a new flag to the Hill Country Veterans Center on Saturday, June 11, in observance of Flag Day with four lodge members

and three guests present.

Other meetings this year will be held Oct. 5 and Dec. 2. The October meeting will include the election of officers and the Dec. 2 gathering will be the Christmas party.

All meetings are held at the Wells Fargo Bank Community Room at 301 Junction Highway, Kerrville, unless otherwise noted. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Louise Schuetze plans ‘luau’ for Aug. 8 meeting SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge No. 3 will meet Aug. 8. The meeting will have a luau theme with a hot dog bar with potato salad, sweet tea and drinks from the bar.

The lodge treated its members to a Mexican dinner at Titos on South Alamo in June.

Guests paid for their own meals. Lynn Wiede won the attendance prize.

The lodge mourns the passing of Viola Boyd on July 1 at the age of 96. Sister Boyd had been a member for 60 years and served as president in 1983. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Benjamin Boyd.

She was known for her baked breads and pastries.

She and her husband loved

Viola Boyd to garden and shared the fruits of their labor with family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Joan Kessinger, Sylvia Fasone and Ben Jr.,

Alice Naughton is now 102 years young. The Louise Schuetze Lodge member celebrated her birthday on July 9. She has been a member of the lodge since Oct. 8, 1956.

She never misses meetings or lodge activities.

Dallas Lodge will meet Aug. 28 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge No. 22 will hold its next business meeting on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the hall.

The air conditioning at the hall has been upgraded.

Three units cool the two-story hall. One of these has been replaced. Another two units cool the old bowling alley room that is one-story. One of these has been replaced.

The Home Association approved their replacement along with work to improve the ductwork, fix holes and replace the air-conditioning registers.

This project needed to be completed as soon as possible for the comfort of members, patrons and performers.

The hall is a public bar and parts or all of the building are rented for public and private events to help with the upkeep of this 105-year-old historic city, county and state landmark.

Dallas Lodge and Columbia Lodge No. 66 each donated $5,000 to the Home Association to help with the cost of the two new

air conditioners. The Home Association did not ask the lodges for the money but both lodges agreed to partner in this way because the Home Association needed the funds.

The lodges are once again considering a merger.

Dallas Lodge President Andy Schellenberg has appointed a committee that will include himself, Eva Day, Steve Schellenberg and Clint and Terri Holmes to meet with a committee from Columbia Lodge to explore this possibility.

Members congratulate Mark S. Enders on 70 years of membership. He became a member July 10, 1946. He resides in Missouri City.

Members send sympathy to the family of Dorothy Floyd (Dottie) Simon. She passed away June 12. She was 90 years old. Six members from Dallas Lodge and six from Columbia Lodge attended her service on June 17 in Dallas to offer condolences to her sons, Bob, Terry and Steve, and to other family

members. Sister Simon had eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Grandchildren Michael, Alison and Jennifer Simon have received lodge scholarships.

Sister Simon was proud of her family and liked to tell members about them. When she did not drive anymore she still came to meetings with Kay Roberts but this year she was unable to come.

She retired as a Hermann Sons insurance agent five years ago. She was so proud of the certificate she received from then Grand Vice President-Marketing Buddy Preuss. She served as a member of the Grand Lodge’s Fraternal Activities Committee and served her lodge in many capacities, including president. She was a Home Association director and treasurer. She enjoyed being a member of the lodge bowling teams.

The lodge made a donation to the Retirement Home in her memory.

Pershing Lodge to hold memorial service Aug. 3 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge No. 160 will meet Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m.

The annual memorial service will be part of the gathering.

Members who passed away between April 2015 and May 2016 will be honored. Family members of those who have passed are welcome to attend.

Paul Vogt hosts party BOERNE – Paul Vogt Lodge No. 234 hosted a swim party for members on June 25 at the Boerne City Park Pool.

About 40 members enjoyed hamburgers cooked by Wayne Zoeller on his grill.

Cibolo Lodge plans memorial service for Aug. 4 CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge No. 147 is excited to welcome new members Katherynne Alexandra Martinez, Kayla Anne Martinez, Jennifer Rae Thein, Noah Hunter Thein, Myiah Lynne Magiera, Lauren Cecilia Blackmon, Zander Enzo Stanley and Nathan London Stanley.

The annual memorial service will be a part of the meeting.

The lodge celebrated Flag Day on June 14 at Cibolo City Hall. Lodge members, the Cibolo mayor and city staff were in attendance.

Attendance award winners for the July meeting were Emilie Shepherd, Jonny Brown and junior member Brenley Bierstedt.

Rebekah Cowan’s name was drawn for the special drawing but she was not present so the

prize increases to $37 next month.

The prize for best side dish went to Dorothy Schneider for her cucumber salad and Nell Shepherd’s oatmeal raisin cookies won for best dessert.

The 41st annual Schertz Jubilee and Fourth of July Parade were tons of fun this year. Dancers and several lodge members rode on the award-winning Hermann Sons float.

Members were reminded that the annual bowl-a-thon benefitting the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, at Oak Hills Country Club. For more information, go to the Hermann Sons website.

Members also are reminded that beginning in August the lodge will start collecting personal care items for donation to the nursing homes in the area. Especially needed are blankets and scarves, but no candles please.

Zuehl to make donations to two area bowling clubs SEGUIN – Zuehl Lodge No. 163 will make a monetary donation to the Germania and Bexar bowling clubs for use at their annual suppers that are coming up soon.

The lodge welcomes new junior members Emma Claire Barnickle and Kate Julius Barnickle.

Seguin Lodge No. 37 sent an invitation for its 125th anniversary celebration on Aug. 14. Those interested in attending need to RSVP by July 29.

For its Join Hands Day project, the lodge joined the SPJST chapter in donating matching funds to “Hugs from Home” and the Christian Cupboard in Seguin.

The Christmas party this year will be held Saturday, Dec. 3. Notice the change

Giddings Home Association to celebrate anniversary GIDDINGS – The Giddings Home Association will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the current building on Sunday, Sept. 11.

A fried chicken dinner will be served from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. To-go plates also will be available.

Proceeds will be used to help pay for the replacement of the dance floor. More details are coming in August.

Special guests at the June 9 meeting were representatives of the local Trail Life Troop, Colton Barr, Coy Hunt, Hunter Pleasant, Trace Kruemcke, Cody Beisert and Clay Beisert, adult leaders Greg Pleasant and Tim Barr and parent Cody Beisert.

Trail Life is a faith-based adventure group, chartered through churches, teaching valuable life and leadership skills to boys and young men. The local troop is chartered through Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Giddings.

Debbie Barrington reported that 70 suitcases and backpacks were delivered to the Bastrop County Child Protective Services offices

and deliveries of the same nature were made to the Lee County and Fayette County CPS offices. The deliveries were part of the Suitcases for Suzy program that the lodge participated in as part of Join Hands Day. The suitcases will be given to foster children who come through the system. Personal care items such

as toothbrushes and toothpaste also were included.

Owen Thomas attended his first week at Hermann Sons Youth Camp.

Bernice Basward reported sending a get-well card to Wendy Turner and thinkingof-you cards to Milton and Linda Ihlo and Leroy Wobus.

Gay Hill members enjoy meal GAY HILL – Gay Hill Lodge No. 193 met July 7 and members enjoyed a chicken and rice meal prepared by David and Doris Roehling.

President Stanley Klekar read a note from Bread Partners thanking the lodge for its generous donation.

He also thanked Robert Ziese for the three days he worked at the lodge mowing.

He also thanked Lance Lehde for his help.

In August, Stanley and Mary Jo Klekar will host the meal.

Siemering welcomes new members SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge No. 32 will meet Aug. 9 in the Rathskeller.

In September, the lodge will meet at The Station restaurant.

Hochheim-Prairie presents scholarships YOAKUM – Caroline Spaeth and Karlie Stehle are the recipients of the 2016 Hochheim-Prairie Lodge No. 90 scholarships.

The lodge received a note from Yoakum Independent School District Superintendent Tom Kelly thanking the lodge for supporting the students with scholarships.

At the June meeting, it was reported that a get-well card was sent to LaJoyce Brennaan and a sympathy card was sent to the Leona Prause family.

Hermann Sons Future Club Shining Stars

Shining Stars enjoy Fun Day at Schlitterbahn

More than 450 Hermann Sons junior members and their families attended the Hermann Sons Future Club Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels on Saturday, June 18.

Participants met at the Surfenburg Pavilion for a short program and were treated to breakfast. T-shirts and drink cups were handed out to the Shining Stars before they headed out for some fun in the sun at the waterpark.
