President's Message Navigating the future of Hermann Sons Life By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO Happy New Year! I hope that 2024 is a healthy and prosperous new year for you! As we build our plan for the future of Hermann Sons Life, it is important we stress the need for an organizational reset and tackle fiscal responsibility . In the life of every family and organization, the need for a reset at some point is inevitable . In doing so, we are securing the future of HSL for generations to come . In an ever evolving and increasingly challenging environment, the need for HSL to adapt and recalibrate is more crucial than ever before . HSL remains strong and viable . However, we must evolve to remain so . To secure a stable and prosperous future, a strategic reset is not just advisable, it is imperative . Organizations, just like individuals and families, go through phases of growth, stagnancy and challenges . With global uncertainties, increasing inflation, market fluctuations and regulatory changes and pressure, the call for deliberate action is louder than ever . A

reset, in this context, does not mean a complete overhaul, but rather a thoughtful reevaluation of strategies, structures and spending habits . One of the key aspects that demand immediate attention is to control spending . Prudent financial management is the backbone of any successful organization . We are blessed that our founding fathers built a solid foundation, and we have financial security and valuable real estate . Their decisions have helped HSL weather many storms and capitalize on emerging opportunities . I applaud our Board of Directors for recognizing the importance of restraining spending . This is never an easy decision, nor a popular one . However, unrestrained spending will hamper HSL’s ability to weather future storms . Controlling spending isn’t about austerity; it’s about prioritization and efficiency . We must identify areas where resources may be better spent and reallocate them to make the most impact . This has required our Board of Directors to analyze HSL’s goals not just

for today, but for future generations and to consider market dynamics and potential risks . By discerning between essential and discretionary spending, we are strengthening and ensuring a more resilient financial foundation . By taking proactive measures, and reaffirming a culture of financial prudence, we position ourselves to be able to navigate unexpected challenges that may arise (like the pandemic) and make strategic investments in our future . This approach will ensure the continuation of a financial buffer and provide us the flexibility of adding more innovative technology to serve you and enhance our product line to be able to better meet your financial needs . In times of economic volatility controlling spending is not just about survival, it’s about laying the groundwork for future growth . Organizations that can navigate fiscal challenges are better positioned to seize opportunities when they arise while others are retracting . This strategic advantage can propel a company ahead of its competitors and establish it as a

resilient and secure force in the marketplace . Some things to consider: HSL has carried the cost of collecting and distributing dues . The costs involve personnel (salaries), bank fees, paper, printing and postage costs . HSL has not kept any of the dues since the beginning, so collecting and distributing dues has been done at a loss to the organization . Dues for many lodges have not changed for decades . Due to staggering inflation, costs have increased exponentially, especially in the last 12-24 months . The Retirement Home expenses have been greater than tenfold what is brought in through each resident’s portion and donations . The resident count for 2023 was 21 and is expected to drop to below 10 in 2024 . While Hilltop and Riverside camps’ expenses are greater than what is brought in through campers’ registration, both camps bring in rent throughout the year to offset these expenses . Navigating the future of Hermann Sons Life Cont’d from Pg. 2 Considerable work is being done to bring in more rentals and to come up with new, innovative ideas to expand the rentals even more. In addition to rentals for church camps, law enforcement, school districts and even weddings, Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett and Vice President of

Member Benefits Cecily Kelly, have created an event for the 2024 eclipse. With Comfort being in a prime location for the eclipse, many are renting cabins and parking spots to view the eclipse. This is a wonderful opportunity for not only revenue for HSL to support our fraternal endeavors, but also to introduce many to HSL for the very first time. Rooms are also

available for rent at the Retirement Home for the upcoming eclipse. Be sure to reserve your room or spot quickly as we are filling up! While dance registrations have declined largely since Covid, dance still brings in around 600 dancers and has proven to be a wonderful ambassador for HSL. Seeing so many dancers spreading joy in their commu-

nities during the holidays was amazing! While membership has been declining, there are still considerable numbers of members attending lodge meetings and remaining active in HSL. So many of our lodges play an important role in serving our communities. The charitable giving and service projects throughout Texas could not

happen without the hard work and commitment of our lodges and members. I am proud to say that considerable work is being done at the Home Office to bring you better service, a more robust product portfolio and security for generations to come. I look forward to telling you more about the exciting things happening for HSL in 2024!

Hermann Sons Life products help navigate life's uncertainties By TERESA SAATHOFF Vice President of Sales Happy New Year from the Sales Department! I had the privilege of attending eight lodge Christmas parties (Stockdale, Brenham, Gulf, Prinz Solms, Schwertner, Hondo Victory, Bernardo and Cat Spring) which means my New Year’s resolution involves dieting and to stop sampling every homemade dessert! I enjoyed meeting members, eating a lot of wonderful meals, white elephant gift exchanges, bingo, Keeno, a live band and dance in Brenham, and did I mention all of the desserts? It is incredible how Hermann Sons Life brings communities together and how proud our members are to be a part of our incredible organization. for the future. Understanding that one size does not fit all, Hermann Sons Life provides whole life and term insurance. Whole life insurance is considered to be permanent life insurance and it provides protection while building cash value. Unlike term life insurance which provides coverage for a specified term, whole life insurance remains in force for the entirety of the policyholder’s life. On the flip side, term life insurance is a more straightforward and cost-effective option for those primarily seeking protection for a specific period. It provides coverage for a predetermined term and the premiums are generally lower compared to whole life insurance. While it lacks the cash value component of whole life insurance, term life insurance serves as a practical

choice for individuals with temporary financial responsibilities such as mortgages or education expenses. HSL term policies have a unique feature that allows you to convert any or all of your policy to whole life insurance without proof of insurability. In the vast landscape of life insurance and financial security, Hermann Sons Life has stood as a steadfast guardian for Texas families since 1861. Hermann Sons Life has been a trusted institution committed to ensuring the well-being of its community through a range of insurance products. As we step into the present, Hermann Sons Life continues its legacy by offering products designed to navigate life’s uncertainties. Whether it is steady growth offered by annuities, the enduring protection of whole life insurance or flexibil-

ity of term insurance, Hermann Sons Life remains dedicated to safeguarding families. Hermann Sons Life’s remarkable journey since 1861 mirrors the resilience and commitment embedded in the Texas spirit. With a legacy of protecting families for more than 160 years, the institution continues to evolve ensuring that its offerings align with the diverse and changing needs of the community. For those seeking financial security and peace of mind, Hermann Sons Life stands ready to guide you through the next chapter of your family’s story. Group rentals will keep Camp busy this spring By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director Greetings from Comfort! I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a very Happy New Year! Camp is going to be very busy this spring. Katie Miller, elementary assistant principal at Boerne ISD, will be bringing five more classes to Camp for the Boerne BOA program. In the fall we hosted three groups. It’s great to have kiddos running around the facility. During spring break, we will be hosting two groups from Waco. Again, utilizing the facility is important for the upkeep of both Riverside and Hilltop. We have weekends on the calendar that are available to church groups, boys’ and girls’ clubs, girl and boy scouts and even father-son retreats. If you are a member of a church or group that sends members to different retreat centers – give us a call. We will always work to exceed your expectations. We have most of the month of August available for you to rent! Spring break work As I mentioned above, we have been able to secure a group rental for spring break! That means I’m able to offer our summer staff the opportunity to earn additional money. This is available to CIT-2s, junior staff, counselors and senior staff. I will be able to offer five staff members $600 for working March 11-16, 2024. The work will include set-up and cleaning Hilltop facility and when the group is at camp, assisting with the preparation and clean-up in the kitchen and dining hall along with the operation of some activities. Please text me at 909-3629058 if you would like to work. Solar Eclipse Event – April 8 We are extremely fortunate to be perfectly placed to see the full solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. We have plenty of car spaces

available. Drive in early and get a good spot (quite frankly the whole camp is a good spot). The cost of a car space is only $30 per car. If you would like to make it a weekend event, we will have spots available for RVs. While we have no hook-ups, you can spend the night for only $100 per RV per night. If you’d like to reserve a cabin for you and your extended family, please reach out to me, Ian, at 830-995-3223 or email me at ianb@hermannsonslife. org. There will be food available for purchase from 10:30 p.m. to noon on April 8. Volunteer workday – April 13, 2024 In addition to the work for the group rentals, we still must prepare for summer camp. Traditionally, the annual Volunteer Workday is a massive help in getting the camps ready for our junior members. The date this year is April 13, 2024, from 9 am. to 5 p.m. This day really allows Heath and Clay to focus on the big items that they need to get ready. We have big and small jobs that require only a willingness to help your camp. Work done on this day really does give myself and our staff more time to work on staff training. Staffing I’m very excited about 2024. Staffing is moving along very nicely. I’d like to see a few more returners confirm they are coming home for the summer, but that is not unusual for this time of year. What is unusual is that boys staffing is well ahead of the girls. If camp started tomorrow, I could run a full Hilltop Camp. Riverside is on the same pace as 2023’s hiring – which was fully staffed. We need more medical staff We are still looking to fill a few spots on our medical team for the summer. RNs, LPNs, paramedics and EMTs are all in-

Hermann Sons Life Camp vited to apply. Upgrades in 2024 We have not been lazy since camp ended…well maybe a little. But that has not stopped Heath, Clay, Melissa and me from working tirelessly on improving the camp for both our campers and counselors. An area that’s been a problem for a while is keeping the Biebers dorm cool. Since I’ve arrived at Hermann Sons Life, we’ve have been working on improving the air conditioning and added blackout curtains to help with this issue with limited success. We think we’ve solved the issue! Apparently, there was no insulation in Biebers which is why we have not been able to keep those dorms as cool as we’d like. That is no longer an issue. We fully expect

Biebers to be cooler this summer. The Riverside dining hall continues to get a facelift. We’ve added some awesome new photos around the dining hall, and it looks so good. Maybe you’ll be on the wall? Archery was always a difficult activity to schedule for campers at Riverside. The demand was so high. We have now doubled the size of the archery range allowing us to schedule more campers and give the campers the opportunity to shoot longer. YAY! We have a few other items on the list for improvements at both Riverside and Hilltop. Zoom meetings and lodge meetings As always, I’m willing to travel the state and visit with lodges to talk about camp! All I need is an

invite! As for the Zoom meetings, I will be hosting two zoom meetings in the spring to help answer agents’ or parents’ questions about the summer camp program. I think you’d find it useful to understand the many changes that have occurred over the past five years. Last summer, I had several parents unhappy that we were doing things differently from when they were children at camp. These Zoom meetings allow me to answer questions to help us provide the best possible summer camp experiences for our members. The Zoom dates and times are: March 23, 2024 – 9-10 a.m. April 14, 2024 – 9-10 a.m. That’s all for now.

Howie’s Happenings

Czarnek home full and a bit muddy these days By ROBIN CZANEK President and CEO NEW BRAUNFELS – With the holidays, we have had a house full. We not only have Howie and Beau, but also our granddogs, Krypto and Tig. It’s feeling more like a doggie day care at home, but we are loving it. (Well, I am anyway!) Tig is a great sleeper, and she insists on sleeping underneath the covers. With the colder weather, it’s nice to have a little heater sleeping with us. With the bit of rain we have had here and there, it has been impossible to keep the house clean. Howie and Beau absolutely love running around in the rain and playing in the mud and Tig joined the fun. Krypto wasn’t impressed with their nonsense and preferred to stay inside where it was warm and

dry and play ball. Howie and Beau wanted to share their friend, Zoey, with you. Zoey is just one of the many adorable pups of all kinds located at Heart of Texas SPCA/ HOT K9 Rescue. She’s cute, cuddly, 40ish pounds and about a year and a half old. She is so sweet! Zoey came to HOTK9 to escape euthanasia at a small, high volume animal control facility along with her brother about a year ago. He got adopted but this amazing girl still needs a home. She has done well with children at events, and absolutely loves playing and being a water dog – but she does prefer to be the only pet. If you’re interested in meeting any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to

schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA /

HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com. You’ll also be able to see their adoption events where you can meet many of their precious

pups. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.

No remorse! Tig, from left, Beau and Howie love running around in the rain and playing in the mud and then tracking it in all over the house.

Retirement Home

Tig loves cuddling underneath the covers and staying warm especially in “Grandma” and “Grandpa’s” bed.

Retirement Home employees and residents donated items for the local Sheriff’s Department Blue Santa program. Pictured is Sgt. Heather Pomeroy accepting the gifts for disadvantaged children.

Granddog Krypto has added more fun and chaos to the Czarnek home.

Zoey is a cute, cuddly 40ish pounds and is a year Beau, left, and Tig are not happy when they don’t and a half old. Her brother has been adopted, and get to go outside and play in the mud! she is hoping for a home of her own.
