Auf Wiedersehen, Leroy Past Grand President Muehlstein passes

SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is saying goodbye to a devoted and beloved leader. Past Grand President Leroy Muehlstein will be laid to rest on Saturday, Dec. 22, in Moulton near the farm where he was raised and spent some of his happiest days. Leroy passed away Monday, Dec. 17. He was 82.

Leroy served as Grand President for 20 years – from 1989-2009 – longer than any other Grand President.

He will be remembered as the ultimate fraternalist and a man who lived his life every day by the Hermann Sons motto of “Friendship, Love and Loyalty.”

Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 21, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz. A rosary service will begin at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 601 N. Pecan St., Moulton. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Social Center Fund, 601 N. Pecan St., Moulton, or Boysville, 8555 TX 1604, Converse.

Hermann Sons Life will make a $500 donation to each one of these organizations in Leroy’s memory.

Creating a better camper experience

By IAN ““GUNNER” BRASSETT Executive Camp Director When running a summer camp that is steeped in history, such as Hermann Sons Life Camp, there are many people who must be considered when making decisions. The Board of Directors. The Home Office. The agents. The parents. The grandparents. The staff and, of course, the alumni.

None of these constituents of Hermann Sons Life Camp matter more than the campers for whom the Camp is operated.

When I was asked to join Hermann Sons Life Camp as the Executive Director in October, I made it clear from the beginning of my employment that every decision I make will be what in my opinion is in the best interest of the campers!

Personally, I do not believe in change for the sake of change, but change for the sake of providing the camper a better summer camp experience must be encouraged.

I have been working 70-plus hours a week for the past six weeks seeking to learn as much as I can about the history of Her-

I have spent the better part of my first weeks on the job talking Camp with anyone who is willing to share their experiences with me. I have spoken with well over 80 previous and current campers, junior staff, counselors, senior staff, kitchen and maintenance staff, previous directors from both near and far, parents, grandparents, agents and alumni.

I have been asking questions, lots of questions about each person’s Hermann Sons Life Camp experience. The purpose of these calls and meetings was simple. I wanted to know why in the past

six years the Camp has decreased in size by more than 30 percent?

This is a fact. I wanted to know what it is about a camp that provides a summer camp experience at 30 percent the cost for an equivalent summer camp experience that would make campers not return at an alarming rate?

In 2014, there were 400 campers from San Antonio. In 2018 there were 219.

My job is to fill the 15 percent of beds that were empty in 2018.

My job is to arrest this falling attendance.

My job is to provide campers with the best week of their year, not simply the best week of the summer!

How will I begin this job?

I have been able to ask the questions only an experienced camp professional might ask and an experienced Hermann Sons Life Camp staffer might not think to ask! My ego does not allow me to think that I have all the answers! For this reason, I was very fortunate recently to spend a weekend with Tricky, Lucky, Webster, Skittles and John Sorbel to discuss my initial concerns about Hermann Sons Life Camp. These concerns are not based on preconceived notions, but on those more than 80 conversations. I had a blast!

There will be changes made in 2019 to improve the summer camp experience for all the campers. These are just a few of the changes agreed upon at the meeting.

Hermann Sons Life Camp has a wonderful spirit and soul. This needs to be preserved, nourished and allowed to thrive. I believe that Hermann Sons Life Camp is a very special and unique environment that provides children a See CAMPERS, Pg. 10

Working as a team to increase membership

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing The Hermann Sons Life Marketing Team hopes that everyone had a very Merry Christmas and wishes all a Happy New Year.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all our current members who referred new prospective members to our organization in 2018, and also a great big thank you to all the lodges that worked hard to reach their respective new member goals. We will publish the lodge honor list in the next edition.

Speaking of referrals, in 2019 we want to increase the chances to win and will be offering not one, but two $50 gift cards for the recommender monthly drawings. Of course, the more

you recommend, the better your chances of winning!

As I have stated many times before, it is our members who can make the most impact on the growth of our organization, by talking about Hermann Sons Life to your family, friends

I find this remarkable as we now have a smaller agent force that is producing on average more premium income per agent.

2019 marketing theme chosen SAN ANTONIO – “Generations of Service and Protection” will be theme of the membership growth campaign for Hermann Sons Life in 2019.

The theme ties together three important words for Hermann Sons Life.

“Generations” of families have been members of Hermann Sons Life in its 158-year history. In fact, some of our members boast of having four and five generations of Hermann Sons Life membership in their families.

“Service” is at the heart of what we do as a fraternal organization. Service is what sets us apart from other life insurance companies. We serve and strengthen our communities through our outreach projects. We serve each other by providing friendship and fellowship in good times and in bad.

“Protection” is what our life insurance and annuity products provide. We have plans that protect every member of

every family from the “what ifs” in life.

This campaign theme will be used throughout the year to promote new Hermann Sons Life membership and to encourage members to keep the insurance coverage they have.

Bringing in new members and retaining current members will serve to make Hermann Sons Life stronger so that it can in turn continue to strengthen all of the communities it serves.

Hermann Sons Life lodges and members are asked to help us carry out this campaign by recommending new members and by continuing to serve their communities whenever possible.

Lodges will be receiving their new member campaign goal shortly after the first of the year.

Throughout the year, the Home Office will be asking members to tell us what Hermann Sons Life membership has meant to them and their families. We will feature these

members in a series of testimonials that will appear in the newspaper, on Facebook and on our website. Look for the first of these testimonials in the first week of the New Year.

Hermann Sons mourns loss of Muehlstein Cont’d. from Pg. 1 stein and Matilda Dierschke and was raised on the family farm.

After high school, he came to San Antonio to attend business college where he studied bookkeeping. He graduated with an associate’s degree in 1954. He also studied economics at San Antonio College.

He worked at Handy Andy and the meat department at H-E-B and for City Public Service from 1955-1968.

Leroy began his Hermann Sons journey in 1955 when he became a member of Harmonia Lodge at the encouragement of H.F. Koester and Ike Neimeyer. He transferred to Kirby Lodge in 1964 and served as president of that lodge for seven years starting in 1967.

He served as a Hermann Sons agent for almost two decades.

He first became a Grand Lodge officer in 1973 when he was elected to the Grand Finance Committee. He would also serve as Second Grand Vice President and First Grand Vice President before being elected Grand President in 1989.

He retired in 2009 but remained a member of the Grand Committee until 2017.

His influence on the fraternal world was also felt at the state and national level. He was an active member of the Fraternal Alliance of Texas (formerly known as the Texas Fraternal Congress) and the American Fraternal Alliance (formerly known as the National Fraternal Congress of America).

He was president of the National Fraternal Congress of America in 2000-2001, only the second Hermann Sons member to ever serve in this capacity. He also served as Texas Fraternal Congress president in 2006-2007.

Leroy was just as comfortable in his lederhosen as he was in a business suit. He played the drums and accordion and delighted in embracing the German culture that was part of his personal heritage and the history of Hermann Sons.

He was a devoted family man.

He married Linda Merle Breitschopf on May 4, 1957.

Linda was with Leroy as he visited lodges all over the state,

Their travels also took them to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Austria and Japan as well as on several cruises.

The family includes three sons, Scott and wife Mary, Glen and wife Rhonda and Robert and wife Mary Ellen; nine grandchildren, Chance and wife Lesa, Katie Segner and husband Otto, Ethan, Sarah, Josh, Megan Scheurer and husband Rick, Zach, Lyndsey and Matt and wife Meghan; four greatgrandchildren, Madelyn, Marshall, Mary and Milly; and step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Laverne Hajek, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leroy loved to play dominoes,

golf and bowl and took part in many charity tournaments throughout the years. In 2016 he was inducted into the Hermann Sons Bowling Hall of Fame.

He also enjoyed being outside where he could go hunting with family and friends and feed the cattle on the family farm in Moulton.

In his later years, he would only go deer hunting when a grandson could go with him and field dress the deer for him.

His reach extended to the community around him as well. He was a past president of the Optimist Club, a member of the San Antonio Executives Association and served on the board of directors for Boysville.

SAN ANTONIO – As soon as the news of the passing of Past Grand President Leroy Muehlstein was posted on the Hermann Sons Life Facebook page, members and friends responded with their thoughts about the man who left such as indelible mark on his Hermann Sons Life family. Here are some of those comments: Chair of the Board Sandra Jones: Leroy was an inspiration to all Hermann Sons Life members. He was a mentor to so many of us as we served on committees and worked with him. As he traveled across the state attending meetings and parties he made many friends. He will be greatly missed by our entire organization.

Interim President & CEO Samantha Schulmeier: Mr. Muehlstein seemed to know EVERYONE and was loved and respected by all.

Just having the opportunity to know him was an honor. I appreciate and will cherish all of his support and advice throughout the years.

My only regret is not letting him teach me how to play that accordion as we had talked about.

Director Mike Beam: He was the ultimate Son of Hermann.

Mike Warneke: What a gentle giant of a man we lost today.

Director Suzanne Hildebrand: I will especially miss his wise counsel and his twinkling eyes.

Henrietta Fenner: A great inspiration to all who knew him.

Rebecca Henley: He was such a lovely man with so much integrity.

Kathie Ninneman: For him, serving as Grand President of Hermann Sons wasn’t a job, it was a way of life.

Elaine Soto: He was such a kind soul. Always so thoughtful of everyone.

BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge members put together bags of toiletries and personal care items for the residents in the local nursing homes. Judy Rudloff and Shirley Ganske were among the volunteers who helped with the project.

LOUISE SCHUETZE – Louise Schuetze Lodge members donated 660 books to the Ronald McDonald House. The volunteers were delighted to receive the much-needed books. Making the delivery for the lodge were Carol Grill, Jo Ann Massengale and Janet Abell.

Cecil Willis Jr. has received his 60-year membership pin. Cecil lives in Stafford and is a member of Pershing Lodge. He joined on May 7, 1958.

RICHLAND – Richland Lodge members donated personal care items to the Circle of Hope Community Center in Pflugerville. The items will be distributed through the Pflugerville Independent School District.

Sue Ann Owens has received her 60-year membership pin. Sue Ann lives in Jourdanton and is a member of Jourdanton Lodge.

Medical Notes early detection and treatment can protect the eyes against serious vision loss. That makes it imperative that individuals from all walks of life learn about glaucoma, its risk factors and how to recognize it.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve.

When such damage occurs, vision loss and even blindness can

result.

What is the optic nerve and why does it matter?

The NEI notes that the optic nerve is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that connects the retina to the brain.

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains cells that are sensitive to light. These cells trigger nerve impulses that pass via the optic nerve to the brain, where

visual images are then formed.

Because its role is so significant, the optic nerve must be healthy for good vision.

What are the most common types of glaucoma?

According to the IAPB, primary open angle glaucoma, or POAG, and primary angle closure glaucoma, or PACG, are the most common types of the condition.

When one’s vision is compromised, his or her whole life can change in the blink of an eye.

Many conditions can affect a person’s vision, and one of the more common is glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness across the globe.

The global impact of glaucoma is significant. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people are blind due to glaucoma. In addition,

the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness notes that some estimates have suggested that there will be approximately 80 million people with glaucoma by 2020. If such estimates prove true, that would mean an additional 20 million cases of glaucoma were diagnosed between 2010 and 2020.

Vision loss is often associated with glaucoma. However, the National Eye Institute notes that

Residents celebrate holiday with turkey feast COMFORT – Guests to the Home in November were Stan and Margaret Paradowski, Abilene; Eugene and Lorrie Myers, Baytown; Bill Jones, Boerne; Doc Holliday, Welfare; Lisa Powell, Fayetteville, Ark.; Ron Keyser, Fredericksburg; Billie Hais, Terrell; and Robert Boring.

Ross and Betty Murphy donated two quilts crafted by the Busy Bees of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Comfort for two events at the Home. They wanted to raise awareness of the store that the residents have at the Home. Proceeds from the sales in this store benefit the Retirement Home Scholarship Fund. This store is always open.

Betty reported the following: “Residents at our Hermann Sons Retirement Home decided to add a special event to showcase Our Home Scholarship Store during the annual Christmas in Comfort weekend. To get everyone in the mood for fun and success, we had two quilts donated.

“The first quilt was hung in the dining room and offered all residents an opportunity to sign up to win that quilt. Most of our residents donated money with gratitude for being able to live here in our home. Janice Holley won that drawing on Thanksgiving afternoon.

“The second quilt was displayed in the sunroom and visitors were invited to register to win that quilt on Saturday of the Christmas in Comfort Day. Our store was filled with handmade holiday items from our residents, and they were eagerly bought by our customers.

Residents staffed the store and served apple cider. Dena Warneke, a member of Cibolo Lodge, won the quilt.

“Overall, our Thanksgiving/ Christmas events raised more than $385 for our scholarship fund.

During the following week, even more people visited our store and bought Christmas gifts from our unique selection of handmade items. We all had a good time and are already planning to make this an annual event here at the Home.”

On Thanksgiving Day Janie Jaimes and Tish Berryhill prepared turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, hot rolls and pecan pie for the feast.

Resident Rosie Franklin attended the retirement ceremony for sonin-law Carey Corder after 30 years of service in the U.S. Naval Air Force. The event was held at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. Pictured are, from left, grandson Jesse Franklin, Rosie, daughter and son-in-law Susan and Carey Corder, son Eddie, daughter Mary Hall and daughter Margaret and husband Stan Paradowski. Grandson Cole and wife Chelsey also attended.

Former resident Joyce Liberato joined residents for Thanksgiving. Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” as she turned a young 90 on Nov. 23.

In November, resident Roland Naumann enjoyed a trip to Destin, Fla., with family members, including daughter Julie Sheldon, granddaughter Michelle Sheldon and son Thomas Naumann and his girlfriend, Lori Shull, and her two children, Jenna and Ryan. Relaxing at the beach and just soaking up the beautiful scenery was the main highlight of this vacation. While there a birthday celebration for Michelle was held at McGuire’s Irish Pub. Hanging from the ceiling at this restaurant are 1 million signed dollar bills given by patrons over the years. Watching the bills fluttering overhead was an interesting sight to see. Campers can attend two weeks in 2019

Cont’d. from Pg. 2 safe, caring place where they can grow as individuals to traverse difficult growth experiences like homesickness and come out the other side knowing that they can do it! They can survive without Mom and Dad for a week.

• This summer, parents will be asked to provide paperwork at least ONE WEEK before arrival day to allow us as a Camp to better prepare the counselors and medical and kitchen staff to serve your child’s individual needs and allow us to eliminate the 30-45 minute wait to announce the cabin assignments.

• Enrollment will begin in early March. After May 15, 2019, parents will be permitted to enroll their child in a second week of camp. This will provide ample time for every member to enroll in Camp and the Camp to fill empty beds with campers.

• There will be a second ALL CAMP activity which will be held at Hilltop Camp. Having been in camping for 30 summers, easily the most popular activity I have operated on both coasts has been a CASINO NIGHT. We will play age appropriate games with the campers, everything from highlow, bingo, 50-50 and Big Wheels to Texas Hold `Em. Campers (and staff) will have a blast! This will be held on Tuesday night!

• The dance will be on Thursday night at Riverside Camp. Why Riverside Camp? Because the girls take longer to prepare for this

evening than the guys! By moving the location of the dance, the girls will get an extra 20-30 minutes to prepare. The cookies will be the same! There will also be lights!

• There will be weekly dance themes. The dance themes will be: Week 1, Decades; Week 2, Hawaiian; Week 4, Red, White and Blue; Week 5, Sports Teams; Week 6, Holidays in July; and Week 7, Disney/Marvel. Week 3 is the Grief Support Session • The boys will sit by cabin at all meals. The youngest two cabins at Riverside will sit by cabin. Homesickness is not alleviated in a camp setting by sitting with older siblings or cousins. It is exacerbated. I have 30 summer camp years under my belt. Campers need to be with their peers, their friends and their counselors. They will still see their siblings, cousins and friends at meals, just not be sitting with them! Some parents may not see this as a positive move. I understand this. While parents are comforted (miles away) by the fact that their children will sit together, this prolongs homesickness and adversely affects the enjoyment of camp for both the older and younger siblings.

• Rocketry will be added at Riverside this summer and Rec Games will be broken up and offered as individual activities throughout the week. More GaGa! More dodge ball! More choice for the campers.

• We will be introducing a new bead. Beads signify an individual’s passage through Camp and tells their story. I love this. Cur-

rently, each week in each cabin a camper is awarded the significant honor of “Camper of the Cabin.”

In the past, they have received a laminated certificate. They will now receive a bead for this award.

• We will be implementing Birthday Breakfasts during which we will celebrate a camper’s and staff member’s birthday with a cookie cake and ice cream for their bunk at breakfast.

• We will still be taking the bunk photos this summer. They will not be printed and given out to parents on the last day. The photos will be online and available for free download. There will also be more photos taken this summer and posted securely online for our parents to review daily.

I think it is very important that when sending your most precious possession away to Camp that you should know and understand the program. I encourage you to call the Camp and ask hundreds of questions. Questions that pertain to your child.

That’s what parents should do!

Once you have chosen the Camp to care for your child, and you are comfortable with that choice, please then allow the Camp staff to do what they do best. Create memories. Create bonds and create friendships that will last a lifetime. Many of these memories and friendships are sometimes forged by little adjustment issues, where growth and learning occur with the child coming through on the other side, hopefully a better, more confident, socially aware

The Glaucoma Research Foundation says that POAG develops slowly and is the most common form of glaucoma and is caused by the slow clogging of the

drainage canals that produces increased pressure on the eye.

PACG, which the GRF notes is quick to develop, results when the drainage canals are blocked, resulting in a sudden rise in intraocular pressure.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Because POAG develops slowly, its symptoms often go unnoticed.

Symptoms of PACG, however, are often very noticeable and may include severe and sudden eye

pain; blurred vision; bright halos appearing around objects; eye redness, tenderness, and hardness; and nausea and vomiting.

Can glaucoma be treated?

While there is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost to it cannot be restored, the NEI notes that treatment for early-stage POAG can effectively delay progression of the disease.

There is not a right to work at Camp because you attended Camp here. Everyone must earn the right to return to Camp every summer. One camper at a time our counselors have a great impact on the lives of the campers. Being a former camper does not mean you make a great counselor and superb role model. I’m very lucky. Hermann Sons Life Camp has a phenomenal number of awesome staff mem-

bers who are kind, caring, compassionate and who love the Camp. I look forward to working with them this upcoming summer to learn from each of them.

While you may not agree with each of my decisions, the best interest of your child, the camper, is at the heart of my choices.

Siemering Lodge holds annual holiday barge ride SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge members and guests took their annual barge ride on the San Antonio River in December. There were two full barges of folks enjoying the sights and sounds of the holidays on the river. Afterwards they enjoyed food, fun, gifts and fellowship in the San Antonio Home Association Building.

In January, officers will be installed and members will make plans for 2019 The lodge has reached its new member goal for 2018.

Corpus Christi will meet at Nolan’s Feb. 4 CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 8 at Southern Charm.

The party included food, games and prizes for the 57 people of all ages who attended.

Chair of the Board Sandra Jones and husband Sam represented the Home Office.

Games included the left/right game, Saran Wrap goodie ball and Christmas tree drawing.

Door prize winners went home with a poinsettia.

Santa came and delivered gifts to all of the junior members!

The children and adults alike were excited to visit with Santa Claus.

Comfort Lodge celebrates Christmas at Hilltop Camp COMFORT – Comfort Lodge held its annual Christmas gathering at Hilltop Camp on Dec. 9. John and Carla Sorbel and Brian and Pamela Nentwich plus several helpers prepared the turkey meal.

The lodge presented its Humanitarian Award to David Thomas. David and wife Shan have lived in Comfort for 16 years. Thomas has been a major supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of Comfort through donations and action. He was very influential in advocating for the new building that is used by the organization today. David is also a supporter of the Comfort Public Library and he has actively served as the secretary for the Comfort Area Foundation for the last nine years. He has led efforts of the Make Comfort Sparkle, an annual day of clean up in Com-

Cameron elects officers CAMERON – Cameron Lodge elected the 2019 officers at the November meeting held at Bea’s Kitchen in Cameron.

SAN ANTONIO – Anton Wenzel Lodge will not meet in January because the regular meeting date falls on Jan. 1. The first meeting of the new year will be held Feb. 5 and will include the annual memorial service.

The lodge will have an outing in January. A trip is planned to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino on Sunday, Jan. 13. Members will board the bus at the Home Association Building at 7:30 a.m.

The bus will leave at 8 a.m. and return at 8 p.m. Cost is $35 per person with $15 being added to your play card. Contact Merlinda Elizondo at 210-815-3468 as soon as possible to make a reservation.

Members and guests enjoyed the holiday barge ride on the San Antonio River. The lodge furnished Santa hats for everyone to wear. After the ride, a meal of tamales, beans and rice was served.

Brenham presents pins, awards during holiday party BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge held its Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 1, with 178 members and guests in attendance. The meal included turkey and ham and the trimmings.

Santa came for a visit and gave goody bags to the children. Robert Zientek and Band provided the entertainment.

The lodge welcomed new member Keith Michael Tumulty and transfer member Gary Falkenberg from Houston Lodge at the Nov. 9 meeting.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg told members they can contact him with any insurance related questions.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Dorthy Tockhorn.

A thank you note was received from her nephew Donald Kessler for the donations made in her memory.

San Marcos celebrates Christmas with party SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge held its Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Zorn Bowling Club. The afternoon festivities included guessing games and other games with poinsettia plants and gold dollar coins as prizes for the winners.

President Agnes Dreibrodt welcomed Vice President of Members Benefits Cecily Kelly and husband John and their children, Heydon and Brennan.

Cecily and Agnes presented Bruce Moreau with the Humanitarian Award.

Winners of the guessing games prepared by Evelyn Moreau were Peggy Meiners, Benhard Faske and Beverly Best.

Youth Coordinator Shirley Faske presented the junior boy members with elf hats and the girls received a Santa scarf. They also received door hangers or bags to color along with candy.

Officers for 2019 were announced and will be president, Agnes Dreibrodt; vice president, Peggy Meiners; financial secretary, Janice Kuhen; and financial trustees, Mary Lou Preuss, Larry Moreau and Janet Magin. Serving as appointed officers will be membership coordinator, Lillian Cargil; communications coordinators, Shirley and Benhard Faske; youth coordinators, Jennifer Lewis and Laura Ramirez; and community coordinators, Peggy Meiners and Bruce Moreau. The Cheer Committee will include Leola Gourley and Mary Lou Preuss and Irene Bierstedt is the historian.

The Cheer Committee reported get-well cards had been sent to Esther Schmidt, Wayne Roach and Caroline McDonald.

contacting H-E-B about catering the turkey dinner. A final thanks went to Bob and Yvonne Robbins for helping at the registration table.

Members were thanked for the canned food donations that were taken to the Hays County Food Bank.

Spring Branch Lodge elects officers, will meet Jan. 20 BULVERDE – Spring Branch Lodge welcomed one new junior member at the November meeting.

President Sharon Knibbe reported that the New York trip in October was a huge success with good food, good weather and wonderful fellowship as

Correspondence included a thank you note from the Home Office for the donation made to the Retirement Home in memory of Carmen Rittiman and another note of thanks for the $250 donation to the Camp

Grief Support Session.

The lodge received a Certificate of Appreciation for its donation to Provisions Outreach in Bulverde in observance of Join Hands Day. A $100 donation was approved to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund. And a

$200 donation was approved to the Hill Country Flood Relief Fund.

The 2019 officers will remain the same as the 2018 officers.

Attendance prize winners were Darrell Woody, Jane Wanke, Ed Geffken, Phyllis Havens, Mary Woody, Sharon Knibbe,

La Vernia Lodge plans officer installation for Jan. 20 LA VERNIA – La Vernia Lodge will start the new year with a planning meeting and officer installation on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. at the lodge hall.

Members and guests are invited to share a pizza meal with the lodge’s new officers and committee appointees.

During this meeting, the lodge’s 2019 goals/plans will be established and the activities calendar will be set. Members are asked to assist the Food Committee by bringing a side dish or dessert. Refreshments will be provided.

business meeting, local resident Harold Schott was recognized for his years of service and dedication to the community. Harold began his career as a police officer with the San Antonio Police Department in 1970. He retired in 2003.

During his 33-year career, he worked 25 years in uniform and eight years undercover. He also was assigned three tours

then again from 2014 to 2017.

He served as Mayor Pro Tem from 2003-2008. He was elected mayor in 2008 and served in that capacity until 2012. During his time as mayor, many projects were completed with some bringing new revenue to the city coffers including H-E-B and Whataburger.

Since 2017, he has served as the Precinct 3 justice of the

of duty as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal with the United States Marshal Service where he worked three different fugitive round-ups. During this period, he also served 11 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, honorably discharged as an E-6.

He first ran for La Vernia City Council in 1998 and was elected. He served as a city councilman from 1998 to 2007 and

peace for Wilson County. He was the judge in charge of the scene of the Sutherland Springs shooting. He will serve as JP until the end of the year.

Throughout the years, Harold has attended lodge meetings and events as a guest and has contributed his time, talent, and money in support of Hermann Sons Life.

Bandera County presents award, pin at celebration BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 2. The afternoon included performances by the Bandera County School of Dance students, the presentation of the Humanitarian Awards and a pin presentation.

The Humanitarian Awards were presented to Joyce Painter and Carolyn Smith.

Joyce is an active member of the Lakehills community. A member of St Victor’s Church, she is a lector commentator and Eucharistic minister. She helps to make prayer blankets for the ill and those near death in the community. Joyce participates in delivering Meals on Wheels and provides transportation for people needing to get to appointments.

She also is involved with the Cajun Festival.

Carolyn is a mainstay in the Lakehills United Methodist Church and community. She has held several offices in the church in the areas of evangelism, fellowship and United Methodist Women. Carolyn teaches adult Sunday school and works with the TWIGS after school program for children.

She is secretary for the AARP chapter in Lakehills and active in her civil service retirement group.

Carolyn comes from a large family and is active with all of her children and grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is an advocate for children of all ages.

The dancers received gift cards from the lodge and Santa paid a visit.

Schulenburg Lodge plans meeting, dinner for Jan. 9 SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge will meet Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Schulenburg Community Center at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and 7 p.m. for dinner and the meeting. Officers will be installed so plan to attend if you are an officer.

Ed Moeller will prepare the stew and there will be bread and crackers. Mary K. Seifert will pick up the peach cobbler. Picking up the ice and helping in the kitchen will be Frank and Becky Bohlmann and Susan Kohleffel.

The lodge’s Christmas party was held Saturday, Dec. 8, at the American Legion Hall.

Director David Noak presented 70-year pins to Milton Mache, a member since March 2, 1948, and Jean Schimcek, a member since Jan. 1, 1948. He presented 60-year pins to Susan Kohleffel, a member since Dec. 11, 1958; Emma Nitschke, a member since Dec. 29, 1958; and Linda Roemer, a member since Aug. 13, 1958.

Emma Nitschke presented the Humanitarian Award to Michele Prihoda.

A native of the Schulenburg area, Michele served 21 years in the U.S. Army. She retired in 2013.

Since 2015, she has volunteered with the Fayette County Habitat for Humanity as a member of the family selection committee. She also volunteers two

Most of Michele’s volunteer time since 2014 has been focused on promoting and improving the Schulenburg Historical Museum. She has been president of the board of directors for the past four years. She has assumed primary responsibility for updating the appearance of the museum, improving displays, plan-

ning window displays and has created beautiful tributes to the history of Schulenburg. She initiated the Veterans Display Wall in 2015. Under her leadership, the museum board of directors has provided programs for the local schools, the Boys and Girls Club, and participated in the Chamber of Commerce and other nonprofit activities.

She is a member of American Legion Post 143 and VFW Post 5623.

A turkey and dressing meal was served. Prizes were awarded.

The money collected went to the scholarship fund.

Round Top has two new members ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge welcomed two new members at the November meeting.

Members agreed to make a donation to the Fayette County Memorial and Benevolent Fund in memory of C.J. Lehmann.

Melanie Rauch reported she would be sending get-well cards to Edna Meinkowsky and Orville Glaesmann. Edna passed away on Dec. 5 at the age of 98. She had been a member since June 6, 1948.

Don and Pat Pyron celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December.

Following the meeting the

group played games and enjoyed a meal of ham and all the trimmings with lots of desserts.

Kypfer-Salge Lodge holds Christmas celebration CLEAR SPRINGS – Kypfer-Salge Lodge celebrated Christmas on Dec. 9 with 53 members and guests in attendance. St. Nick came to visit with the children.

A catered meal was served and there were games to play.

Art and Merry Brinkkoeter were presented the 2018 Humanitarian Award.

Chair of the Board Sandra Jones was on hand to present membership pins.

The family of Leatrice Saur accepted her 70-year membership pin. She has been a member since May 14, 1948.

Bobby Bartels received his 70year pin. He has been a member since May 25, 1948. He also accepted his mother’s 70-year pin.

Irene recently passed away. She had been a member since Sept.

3, 1948.

Also receiving pins were Kathryn Noble, a 70-year member since July 12, 1948; Verna Dean, a 60-year member since Aug. 1, 1958; and Stanley Pehl, a 60-year member since Sept. 1, 1958.

Winners of attendance prizes were Florence Borchers and Art Brinkkoeter.

Merry Brinkkoeter and Helen Lambert won the guessing games.

Prior to the party, members gathered on Dec. 7 for a regular meeting. Members provided the sandwiches and desserts.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Clara Schriewer. Notify Nelrose Koepp if someone is sick or has passed away so a card can be sent.

The current officers were reelected by acclamation.

The monthly $50 donation for December will go to the Comal ISD Education Foundation.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 4. The lodge will provide the tamales and chili. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

Kerrville celebrates Christmas KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge celebrated Christmas with a party on Friday, Dec. 7, at Buzzies BBQ in Kerrville.

About 30 members and guests enjoyed the barbecue meal.

The current officers were reelected by acclamation.

Members also voted to make a donation to the Hill Country Veterans Center. Alan Hill spoke at the party and explained what the center provides and how the donation will be used.

Board Director Stan Steiger presented Scott Muehlstein with his 60-year membership pin. Scott is the son of Past

Grand President Leroy and Linda Muehlstein. He has been a member since April 3, 1968. He was just 1-month-old when he joined.

Stan spoke briefly and then door prizes were awarded.

The schedule for 2019 includes meetings on Feb. 3, April 3, June 5, Aug. 7 and Oct. 2 and the Christmas party on Dec. 6.

All meetings will be held in the boardroom at Wells Fargo Bank, 301 Junction Highway, Kerrville. The boardroom is a change from previous meetings that were held in the community room.

In an effort to save money, the lodge is considering changing the way it sends reminder cards in 2019. One card would be sent prior to the February meeting that would list the meeting dates for the entire year. Members would then need to mark the dates on their calendar or store the information in their phone. This would save the lodge around $300. A separate invitation would be sent for the Christmas party.

Harmonia Lodge presents proceeds from tourney SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge presented the proceeds from its annual Tee It Up for a Cause Golf Tournament at the November meeting.

The meeting began with a traditional Thanksgiving holiday meal served in the Home Association Ballroom and catered by Snoga’s. Members provided the desserts.

Proceeds from the tournament were presented to Judge Johnny Primomo on behalf of Camp Discovery and Kim Kelman from The

100 Club of San Antonio. Tournament co-chairmen Brad Dietrich and Harry Werland presented the checks.

Camp Discovery, a cancer camp for children, received $9,000 and The 100 Club, which supports the families of those members of the law enforcement and fire departments of San Antonio who gave their lives in the line of duty, received $1,500.

Some of the financial donors/ sponsors including Wells Fargo, Steve Prewitt, Mike Beam and

others as well as tournament workers were recognized.

Members were informed of the passing of Dave Little, age 87 and a member since 1953, on Sept. 24, and Dalyn D. Vick, age 61 and a member since 1971, on Oct. 2.

Celebrating a November birthday were Virginia Bernhard, wife of Trustee Bill Bernhard, Stan Steiger, Jim McNeel, Mike Gumpp and Dena Warneke, wife of Financial Secretary Mike Warneke.

Matt Kraus and John Hoog won the cash attendance prizes and Savannah H. Espinosa won the split-the-pot cash.

The lodge’s Oktoberfest meeting began with an inspiring rendition of The Star Spangled Banner played by the Hermann Sons German Band.

The band also provided music during the meal of sausage and sauerkraut prepared by Jake White and John Hoog. Members provided the side dishes and desserts.

Albert Ranzau and Bill Richard will be the lodge’s representatives on the Home Association Board.

Brad Dietrich was celebrating a birthday in October.

Harrison Hilt and Raymond Hengst won the attendance prizes and Robert Peters won the split-the-pot cash.

The meeting ended with more music from the German band lead by Associate Director Al Tapia.

Vineta Lodge to serve chili, tamales at Jan. 3 meeting SAN ANTONIO – It doesn’t seem possible that another year has passed, but 2018 is history.

Vineta Lodge celebrated 117 years as a lodge. All of the fundraisers and gatherings would not have been accomplished without the help of officers and members. Thanks go to everyone for being a member.

The lodge will begin the new year on Jan. 3 with chili and tamales and a social on Jan. 16 playing bunco and then a surprise lunch.

In December members enjoyed a ham dinner and covered dishes prepared by members.

The split-the-pot winner in December was Debbie Jordan.

Several members went home with poinsettias.

The lodge mourns the passing of Vicky Miran, a member for 34 years; Dorothy Strange, a member for 44 years; Elizabeth Bienek, a member for three years; Dorothy Lee Edwards, a member for 57 years; and Mildred Wilder, a member for 63 years.

Cibolo Lodge gives toys, donations during party

CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge held its annual Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Bexar Social Club.

The dance classes were invited to share in the festivities and members were rewarded with a recital with the dancers showing everyone what they have learned so far. After all of their hard work, they were rewarded with drinks and snacks so they would have enough energy to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas! Santa and Mrs. Claus presented the children with gifts and took pictures with the children after listening to their Christmas wish lists.

President John Gray welcomed Director Mike Beam. Together they presented the junior members with their cash attendance awards for the year.

The lodge sponsored a toy drive and Mike and John presented the toys collected to Sondra and Yomi Ajasin from TruLight127 Ministries.

They also presented Nevetta King from St. Jude Ranch for Children (SJRC) with checks totaling $1,080. The lodge held a rummage sale in September and raised $580 despite all the rain.

The Home Office added $500 in Matching Funds.

Pershing will start 2019 with meeting on Jan. 2 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will meet Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Home Association Building. Members are asked to bring their favorite beef stew, cornbread and/or dessert.

Vice President of Information Technology Matt Walker and wife Sandy represented the Home Office at the Christmas party.

This was his first Pershing Lodge meeting and the first time for him to present pins since he became a vice president earlier this year.

He spoke briefly and then presented a 70-year pin to Ruth Lampman, a member since Sept.

27, 1948. He also presented 60year pins to Dorothy Rechner, a member since July 30, 1958, Lillian Franckowiak, a member since Sept. 4, 1958, Andrew Janowski Jr. a member since Sept. 19, 1958, and Jim Gerhard, a member Nov. 13, 1958. Andrew also accepted the 60-year pin for his late father, Andrew Janowski, who recently passed away. He became a member Aug. 12, 1958.

Jessica Keith-Valdez and Andriana Salvatierra from St. PJ’s Children Home accepted the donations of gifts for the children.

SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge will start the new year with a meeting on Jan. 14.

The lodge held its Christmas meeting on Dec. 10.

Members and guests enjoyed the array of snack foods and desserts and then played the Left-Right Game. As President Janice Schwab read the Frosty the Snowman letter, members passed their gift to the right when they head the word right and to the left when they heard the word left. There

The Home Association continues to make inroads into accountability and transparency in making the business end of the Hall more viable and in line with current business practices.

There is always something to be done at the Hall and there is always something for the members to do to help. You can be that person who helps.

Fort Worth donates to Children’s Advocacy Center

FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge held its quarterly meeting at Miranda’s. The 2018 officers were re-elected by acclamation.

Thank you notes for donations were read from Patriot Paws, the Johnson County Children’s Advocacy Center and the Home Office for the donations to Grief Support Camp and the Retirement Home Christmas Fund.

Again this year, the lodge bought gifts for six angels from the Johnson County Children’s Advocacy Center. Thanks go to Darlene Jones, Shannon Jones, Makayla Jones and Sandra Jones for doing the shopping for the angels and delivering the gifts to the church.

Congratulations go to Keith Boyd who will reach his 60-year milestone on Jan. 13.

The first round of LEGO League

took place on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Hillsboro. Team Space Boyz from S.T.E.A.M. received the first place trophy for core values and was one of seven teams to move on to the regional competition in Dallas in January.

Serving as one of the coaches was lodge President Shannon Jones. Junior member Caden Jones is a member of the team.

Core values is about how they do their project - discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun. This group of boys had to go before a set of judges without any of their coaches with them.

The lodge did not meet its new member goal for 2018, so we need to look ahead to 2019 and recommend new members. Hermann Sons Life has some great products, so talk to your friends and family and let’s set our own

goal of each of us getting a new member in 2019.

The next meeting will be held March 3 at Westcreek Lanes.

Members will be making plans for the Join Hands Day project as well as the June picnic.

Members are mourning the passing of Richard Murphy. Rick had been a member since May 1980.

Vice President Nicky Duewall presented the proposed 2019 calendar. Beginning in January, the regular meetings will be held on the first Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade with a couple of exceptions.

The January meeting will be held Jan. 13 (second Sunday) at the Sirloin Stockdale and will include the installation of officers. There will be NO February meeting. The March 3 meeting will be held at Sirloin Stockade and the April meeting will be held at Henry’s Restaurant with high school graduates being honored.

There will be no meetings in July or September. The calendar was approved.

Dallas will install officers, appointees Jan. 27 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet Sunday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Dallas Hall. The 2019 officers and appointees will be installed.

The officers were elected at the Nov. 18 meeting. They include president, Clint Holmes; vice president, Andy Schellenberg; secretary/treasurer, Steve Schellenberg; and financial trustees, Eva Day, Clint Holmes and Terri Holmes.

Coordinators will be communications, Eva Day; youth, Eva Lloyd; and membership, Steve Schellenberg. Margaret Owens will serve as historian.

Home Association Board representatives will be Eva Day, Clint and Terri Holmes, Brigitte Robinson and Andy Schellenberg.

Steve reported on the passing of two members. Joseph P. Connelly passed away Jan. 17,

2018. He was 77 and had been a member for 60 years. Richard L. Harper passed away Sept. 14, 2017, at the age of 60. A donation will be made to the Retirement Home in their memory.

The lodge made a donation to the Hill Country Flood Relief Fund.

Congratulations were extended to Christine Rhoden on her 50 years of membership. She joined Nov. 18, 1968, and re-

sides in Royse City.

The members, family and friends celebrated Clint Holmes’ 30th birthday. Terri and Fred Holmes are his proud parents.

They provided the food, cake and decorations along with Eva Day. Clint is a fifth generation member and will be the youngest president ever to serve Dallas Lodge. He also won the attendance prize.

Gulf Lodge donates toys to Blue Santa program LEAGUE City – Gulf Lodge held its Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 2, at La Brisa Mexican Grill in League City.

Six junior members spoke about their experiences at Hermann Sons Life Camp. They included Avarie Veazie, Viviana Veazie, Shelby Smith, Chelsea Smith, Donovan Guzman and Sophia Guzman.

President Al Stryk presented 50-year membership pins to Rick Huepers and Charles Head. Rick has been a member since April 15, 1968. Charles joined on Oct. 21, 1968.

Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance and gave out goodie bags and asked the children what they wanted for Christmas.

Members donated toys to the Galveston County Blue Santa program. They were delivered to the Lighthouse Charity Team Warehouse in Galveston where the program is headquartered.

Celebrating an anniversary in the last quarter of the year were Shawn and Valeria Brunkow.

New Bielau holds pin presentations WEIMAR – New Bielau Lodge will meet Jan. 28 at the New Bielau Community Center.

The lodge met at the Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg for a meeting and pin presentation on Nov. 26.

Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe and wife Cheryl were guests from the Home Office.

He presented a 70-year pin to Elliott Koehn, a member since Feb. 16, 1948, and 60-year pins to Erwin Kunz, a member since Dec. 27, 1958, and Thomas Falke, a member since Aug. 14, 1958.

Other members who could not attend will receive their pins in the mail.

The lodge welcomed three new members. They are Blakely Anne Vanicek, Brennen Jay Burger and Adalynn Denae Joseph.

ADKINS – Lone Oak Lodge will try a new way of conducting a meeting in 2019. Instead of members coming to the lodge hall for the meeting, the meetings will be held via conference call or webinar.

Financial Secretary Cecily Kelly noted that members want to be involved in the lodge, but are often unable to participate in meetings.

This will allow members to participate in the meeting from wherever they are, as long as they have access to a computer or smart phone.

Calendars with the meeting dates and times will be mailed to every member in January. Each quarter before the meeting, members will be contacted to let them know how to call in and participate. The first meeting will be held Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The decision to use this new meeting format was made at the November meeting.

Officers were elected and remain the same as 2018. They are president, John Kelly Jr.; vice president, Dana Henderson; financial and corresponding secretary, Cecily Kelly; and trustees, Quentin Henderson and Julia Henderson.

Members also discussed holding a market day and/or rummage sale at the building in the spring and fall. Discussion was held on renting a booth at an existing market days event to get information out to possible members about Hermann Sons Life.

Christmas poinsettias were awarded as door prizes to Dana Henderson, Julia Henderson and Cecily Kelly.

Richland Lodge presents pins during holiday party RICHLAND – Richland Lodge finished the year by completing important business and celebrating Christmas.

During the holiday celebration, pins were presented to Barbara Hees-Masi and Gloria Kuempel.

Barbara has been a member since Sept. 2, 1968. Gloria joined on Oct. 26, 1958.

Also during the party donations were presented to the Circle of Hope organization that serves the Pflugerville Independent School District. The lodge has been collecting the personal toiletry items since October in observance of Make a Difference Day. During the November meeting, the lodge held a memorial service to honor Gilbert Weiss and Calvin Hamann who passed

Mission-Alamo Lodge donates toys to St. PJ’s Home SAN ANTONIO – Mission-Alamo Lodge will meet Jan. 23. All members are encouraged to attend the meeting and help plan activities and meeting dates for 2019.

The lodge will furnish the food.

A great pre-holiday party was held in November. There was a joyful group of people, lots of delicious food, creative crafts and a wonderful visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Thanks go to all who helped put on the annual event and to the kitchen crew who not only made several of the dishes but made sure every dish brought by members was served piping hot.

Thanks also go to all who brought toys for donation to St. Peter-St. Joseph Children’s Home.

The toys were presented to Andriana Salvatierra.

She gave a short history on the home and gave thanks for making sure each child would receive a gift at Christmas.

Mission-Alamo Lodge has had a very successful 2018 from meetings to celebrating its 125th anniversary to honoring its pioneers and campers. This would not have been possible without all the wonderful members.

Seguin presents membership pins during party SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 8.

After a welcome by President Roy Merz, Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe spoke briefly.

He presented Jesse Roy Hart with his 70-year membership pin. Jesse Roy has been a member since Dec. 30, 1948. He also presented Helmuth Friedeck with his 60-year membership pin. Helmuth has been a member since Sept. 17, 1958.

The meal featured ham and the side dishes and desserts provided by members.

Two of the Seguin School of Dance classes performed and then Santa arrived. He had presents for the dancers and other children in attendance.

Paul Vogt Lodge celebrates Christmas VAN RAUB – Paul Vogt Lodge celebrated Christmas with a party on Dec. 8. Everyone enjoyed a meal and Santa came for a visit.

McGregor Lodge presents award McGREGOR – Charlie and Mary Jo Williams were presented with the McGregor Lodge Humanitarian Award at the lodge’s Dec. 5 meeting held at the Charlie Griffith Center.

Members and guests enjoyed fellowship, food and gifts.

Charlie and Mary Jo are both involved with the youth of the McGregor community.

Charlie has been president of McGregor Youth Baseball for the past 19 years. He also works with the city on maintenance at the baseball fields.

They also formed The Little Dribblers, which is a city basketball program for boys and girls starting at a young age.

Charlie and a friend, Jerry Smith, coach a 7 on 7 summer football team that has advanced to state.

McGregor Baseball has built and named the Williams Batting Pavilion after Charlie and Mary Jo. Mary Jo has served on the school board for 12 years and they both are involved with their church.

And they do it all while working full-time jobs.

Sympathy cards were sent to Gus Wiethorn and family following the passing of his brother, to the John Sneed family following the passing of his brother, and to Charles

McAnelly and family following the passing of his brother-inlaw.

Members also are mourning the passing of Nelda Hoover.

Nelda loved planning the lodge’s ice cream socials.

Happy Birthday wishes were extended to El Nora Lawton and Jerome Weinstrom.

Cuero Lodge gives $500 donation to DeWitt County Cares CUERO – Cuero Lodge will hold the first meeting of 2019 on Jan. 8 instead of the first Tuesday, as it is New Year’s Day. The annual Christmas party was held Dec. 4. The lodge was honored to have Chair of the Board Sandra Jones and husband Sam representing the Home Office in attendance as well as Jode Zavesky and wife Gina representing DeWitt County Cares. Jode spoke briefly about DeWitt County Cares and thanked the lodge for the $500 donation that will help send care packages to military personnel.

The lodge welcomed two new members, Kennedy Coburn and Jamie Snider.

Members voted to make a donation to Shriners Hospital for

Crippled Children in memory of Karlyne Tiffin who passed away last week. She was a long-time member and head of the Cheer Committee and will be missed.

President Laura Tiffin presented June Guenther, who is retiring after 37 years of holding various officer positions, with a Christmas cactus plant and a card.

As some of you may notice, after about 37 years, my name does not appear as an officer. I joined Hermann Sons in 1981 and soon became an officer, first serving as guide and then on the Finance Committee where I served until 2000 when I became treasurer. I have also

been the reporter/historian for the lodge since 1996 when Cuero Sister Lodge, Westhoff Lodge and Lindenau Lodge joined together to become the Cuero Family Lodge. It has been a job I enjoyed doing and it always made my day when a reader would comment that they read and enjoyed my articles. I spearheaded and oversaw the “coupons for military” campaign for the last 15 years.

During this time, we clipped, counted and mailed boxes of coupons to military bases around the world. I often joked that my DNA was scattered all over the world. During these 15 years the lodge has mailed more than 1.25 million coupons. I have enjoyed my years of service to my lodge. It is only

due to declining health that I relinquish my positions. I will still attend meetings, as I am able.

Membership pin recipients for November were recognized.

The 50-year pin recipients were Rodney Nolte, a member since Nov. 3, 1968; Gaye Avery, a member since Nov. 6, 1968; and Sandra Kenne, a member since Nov. 8, 1968. Robert Goebel, a member since Nov. 10, 1958, received a 60-year pin.

Members celebrating birthdays in November were Juanita Peters, Hailey Hotz, Frances Krause and Dorothy Arndt.

The door prize winners were Allison Tiffin, Pauline Kuecker, Holly Hotz, Iris Hotz and Elizabeth Loos.

Shelby Lodge to hold meeting Jan. 13 SHELBY – Shelby Lodge will meet Sunday, Jan. 13, at Harmonia Hall. A social will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the meeting at 6 p.m. A light meal will follow.

The lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 9 in the Shelby VFD Meeting Room with 26 members and guests present. Oscar Voelkel prepared the ham that was provided by the lodge. Members provided the side dishes and desserts.

Director David Noak presented the 2018 Humanitarian Award to Anna Rose Brandt.

Anna Rose was selected for the award because of her involvement in her church and the Latium and Shelby Fire Departments and her service as president of Harmonie Hall in Shelby for 18 years.

Megan Gross would have won the $38 progressive door prize but she was not present when her name was drawn. The prize will

increase to $40 for the next meeting.

Nolan and Genelle Krebs and Warren and Carolyn Meischen celebrated anniversaries in December.

Celebrating December birthdays were Marie Voelkel, Carolyn Bruening and Betty Huebner.

Houston Lodge will start new year on Jan. 15 HOUSTON – Houston Lodge will meet Monday, Jan. 14, at Sokol Hall, 1314 W. Patton. A chicken fried steak meal from Fallbrook Hickory Hollow will be served.

The lodge celebrated Thanksgiving with a meal from Hickory Hollow in November. Wel-

Members and guests enjoyed a catered meal of fajitas with all the trimmings and treats of Christmas cupcakes, pies and cookies.

The tables were decorated with poinsettias and Christmas tablecloths. Children in atten-

dance received a wrapped gift from under the Christmas tree.

Adult members enjoyed a social hour before lunch while snacking on chips and salsa.

There was a short meeting.

Members voted to donate $300 to the local Blue Santa program and discussed a spring fish fry.

The lodge held its Christmas social on Dec. 10 at Schobel’s Restaurant. Members ordered from the menu. Special guests

were Director Mike Beam and wife Mary and agents Terrel and Robin Maertz.

Mike spoke briefly and presented a 60-year membership pin to Larry Huebel, a member since Oct. 17, 1958.

The current officers were reelected by acclamation except for one trustee. John Holub will replace Marjorie Brune.

The group sang “Happy Birthday” to Elsie Kahlden.
