As we celebrate the end of 2016 and the arrival of 2017, we look forward to a busy and exciting year for Hermann Sons and its members. The theme for the year will be “We Strengthen Community” and we will demonstrate that in many ways. The year will begin with the annual installation of officers in locations across the state. Whether you are an elected or appointed officer, you are encouraged to attend the installation for your district. Several events will be held this spring to raise money for the first Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life-Camp. Attend a Spurs game, buy a piece of jewelry or play a round of golf and you will be helping to send a child who has experienced a loss to a half-week session of Camp
where they will receive counseling and take part in fun activities. Two annual events will be held to benefit scholarship funds. In March, the annual Chili Cook-off to raise money for the Retirement Home Scholarship Fund will be held in Comfort. In April, the annual golf tournament to benefit the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund will be held in San Antonio. Then in May, the Grand Lodge Convention will be held in San Marcos. Delegates will be asked to approve some new and exciting changes to the Grand Lodge Charter and Laws. And that’s only the first half of the year. Get engaged! You’ll be glad you did.

President’s Message
Officers help local lodges thrive Happy New Year! It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts; of reflection and promises; and local lodge officer installations. During the month of January, Grand Lodge representatives will be attending more than 20 regional ceremonies being held across the state for the purpose of installing officers of 130 lodges. Officer installations are held annually for the purpose of issuing the oath of office to newly-elected officers, inspiring lodge volunteers and sharing fellowship
and new ideas. Officers play an important role in the success of local lodges and bring our organization to life in communities across Texas. They also pass on our history and traditions
to future leaders. Behind each successful lodge is a group of dedicated officers. On behalf of the Grand Committee, I thank all officers for their dedication to strengthening their communities. Our lodge and local communities get even stronger with greater support and participation. Now is a great time to get involved in your lodge. Officers and regular attendees want you to attend their gatherings! You can be part of the fellowship and fun and even help plan
and participate in a community service event. You can view all of our lodges on a map at hermannsonslife.org/lodges. Most lodges have photos and schedules on their pages, along with contact information for an officer. If each person reading this article attended a lodge gathering this year, I imagine great things would happen. Finance Committee member retirements announced SAN ANTONIO – Four members of the current Grand Finance Committee have announced that they will not be seeking a seat on the proposed new Board of Directors at the Grand Lodge Convention in May. The Grand Finance Committee serves on the Grand Committee. Convention delegates will be asked to approve changes to the Grand Lodge Charter and Laws replacing the Grand Committee with a six-member Board of Directors. The four who will not be running are Paul Heath, Janice Kuhen, Jack Larned and Wilburn Pargmann. Each one spoke recently about their decision not to become a candidate. Paul Heath, a member of Bandera County Lodge, has been a member of the Grand Finance Committee for 12 years. He served eight years on the Laws Committee prior to that. He will continue to serve as a Hermann Sons agent. “I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve Hermann Sons,” he said. “And I’m excited about the future of our organization. But I feel it will be better for our organization if some younger people are given the opportunity to do what they can to help move us forward.”
He continued by saying that with the changes in governance that are being proposed, Hermann Sons will be the leader among other fraternal organizations. He applauded the efforts of the current executive team, including Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss, and said their leadership “makes it easy for me to turn this organization over to people younger than me.” Janice Kuhen has been a member of the Grand Finance Committee for 20 years. She previoulsy served on the Laws Committee and was chairman of the Grand Finance Committee for eight years. She addressed her remarks to all Hermann Sons members when she said, “I thank you and appreciate the opportunity you have given me for the past 20 years to serve our great organization and for the support and friendships I have gained during my service to the board. I feel it is time to let others have this rewarding opportunity to serve Hermann Sons.” She added that she will continue to serve as a Hermann Sons agent and will remain active in San Marcos Lodge where she serves as secretary/treasurer. Jack Larned has been a member of the Grand Finance Committee for 19 years. He was originally ap-
pointed in 1998 when Mike Beam resigned. He was then elected four times. He echoed the sentiments of the others when he said, “it is time to step back and let someone else serve. It’s time for some new blood on the board.” He stated that he had enjoyed his time on the Grand Finance Committee. “I have worked with some wonderful people and served under three Grand Presidents,” he said. He too said he would remain active in Hermann Sons. “I am retiring from the Grand Finance Committee,” he said, “not from Hermann Sons.” Wilburn Pargmann has served Hermann Sons in some capacity since 1972. He has been a member of the Grand Finance Committee for the past 12 years. He said
he will remain active in his lodge and Hermann Sons. “I have had a tremendous run,” he said. “I feel I’ve served my time. There are other people who would like to do the job and I wish them well.” Reacting to the news from these committee members, Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss said, “I will miss all of these people and the expertise each has brought to the Grand Finance Committee and the Grand Committee. Replacing them will not be easy but I feel confident that qualified board candidates will emerge.” The deadline to apply for a seat on the Board of Directors is midnight on Jan. 31. Donations made to ‘Hugs’ SAN ANTONIO – Members and lodges have made donations during the past month that will make it possible to send more “Hugs from Home” boxes to military personnel serving overseas. The most recent donors were Mission-Alamo Lodge, Wayne

Lodges should be gearing up for 2017 activities The Christmas holidays are the best part of the year. It is a time to be with family and friends, to relax, enjoy traditions and just do what you like to do best. Peace and love go out to all our Hermann Sons members during this special time of the year. This issue contains many photos of lodge Christmas parties. Mike and I were happy to attend several parties over the past month. It is truly a pleasure to be a part of the celebrations that include so many activities, such as Humanitarian Award presentations, junior member recognition, visits from Santa Claus, dance class performances, games, delicious food and, as always, wonderful fellowship. To the many lodges that have contributed to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund, we send our sincere thanks. Special gifts are selected with these contributions to enhance the Home and its surroundings. The Retirement Home residents enjoyed their annual Christ-
mas party on Dec.17. January brings local lodge installations. All elected and appointed officers are asked to take part in the installation ceremony located in your area. This is an excellent time to meet your lodge neighbors and become more educated about the operation of your lodge and the Home Office. January is also the time for lodges to meet with their officers to develop a complete 12-month calendar of events for local lodge activities and service projects. Don’t forget to include at least one event that focuses on the lodge’s junior members. The Home Office believes in the local touch. Nobody can do better on a local lodge level than our members. Focus on membership remains a priority and we rely heavily on the recommendation of new members from local lodge members. Members are the best communicators of who we are and what we represent. Recom-
mend a member today. Here’s hoping many of our lodges reached their 2016 membership quota. Certificates will be presented at area installations. Our lodges have worked very diligently through the past year on community and service projects. With our new focused service cause of Grief Support Services, we can begin a new way of offering help and consoling those who are in need of support tools that will help them to cope. nio Spurs game. The Spurs will be playing the Denver Nuggets at the AT&T Center beginning at 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of tickets for this event will benefit the Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life-Camp this summer. Tickets are $50 each. The seats are located in the Balcony Level. Ticket holders are invited to attend an exclusive Hermann Sons social hour beginning at 6 p.m. in the Rock ‘n Roll Brews Area. The arena doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets will sell out so order no later than Jan. 13. Applications for board of directors being accepted
SAN ANTONIO – Applications are now being accepted for candidates for the Hermann Sons Life Board of Directors . Directors support Hermann Sons Life by providing missionbased leadership, strategic governance and organizational and fiduciary oversight . If approved by Convention delegates, six directors will be elected to a four-year term at the 47th Grand Lodge Convention, May 1-3, 2017, in San Marcos . The board will traditionally meet four times annually for two full weekdays and perform other assigned duties requiring travel . The minimum requirements
for nomination are: • Hermann Sons membership for at least three years as of May 1, 2017 • In good standing with premiums and local lodge dues paid current • Possess and prove at least three of the following core competencies - Business Judgement - Vision - Strategic insight - Management skills - Leadership - Industry knowledge - Financial literacy - Financial accounting skills - Professional
communication skills - Ability to navigate current technology Core competency definitions can be viewed on the online application. • 18 years of age or older • Pass required Texas Department of Insurance background checks Candidates should also have: • The ability to fulfill the responsibilities described in the Board of Directors job description The job description can be viewed on the online application. • A commitment to and understanding of Hermann Sons Life, its members and the fraternal

Change means more recognition for recommenders By TIM KOLBE Grand Vice PresidentMarketing The Herman Sons Marketing Team wishes everyone a Happy New Year in 2017. As an organization Hermann Sons is going through proposed changes to better serve our members, while being a leader amongst our peers in Texas. Our Marketing efforts also are going through some changes. One of the changes will be the way we reward our recommenders in 2017. In the next issue of the Hermann Sons Life newspapers, you will read about the five award recipients for the last half of the 2016 campaign. The new format will change to one recommender winner selected for each month of 2017. That
is a net increase of two more winners for the whole year. The award amount will remain at $100 per winner. Two more chances to win, and the more you recommend, the better the chances of winning for the month! Members can recommend by mail, through the website or by calling in a lead. If you refer a lead to an agent and it results in an insurance application, you will be included in the drawing. I want to congratulate the lodges that have already met or exceeded their membership goals for 2016. As we get a final tally of the 2016 production results, we will be recognizing all lodges that met their goal in the February issue. New 2017 campaign goal letters will be mailed out in January

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiff-

None of those symptoms are comfortable and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths and hydrotherapy. Cold therapy Cold therapy, sometimes referred to as “cryotherapy,” can
relieve pain associated with inflammation that has developed recently. Cold can help numb tissues and relieve muscle spasms and can also be used to alleviate pain associated with injuries. The Merck Manual notes that ice bags or cold packs can be used to apply cold. In addition, fluids that cool by evaporation, including ethyl chloride, may be applied topically. Some medicines may interact with ethyl chloride spray, so inflamma-
tion sufferers should consult their physicians before applying such sprays. According to the Cleveland Clinic, ice can be used to calm flare-ups and numb pain associated with chronic, inflammatory arthritis. Ice also can ease inflammation and numb pain linked to pulled muscles or injured tendons. Pain and inflammation resulting from the stretching or tearing of ligaments in the joints may also be eased by
therapy. The following breakdown should not replace a physician’s advice, but it can help patients battling inflammation to better understand both treatment options. Heat therapy According to the Merck Manual, a reference book for physicians and patients alike, heat works against inflammation by increas-
ing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. Golf tournament to benefit grief session COMFORT – Comfort Lodge is hosting a golf tournament to raise funds to sponsor children to attend the Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons LifeCamp this summer. The tournament is being held at The Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort on Saturday, Feb. 25. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will use a four-person scramble format. The cost to play is $70 per golfer or $280 per team. The fee per golfer includes green fees, one mulligan, range balls, a lunch reception and a VIP ticket to replay at The Buckhorn Golf Course for only a $15 cart fee. Awards will be presented to the first, second and third place teams. Hole contests also will be played. Hole sponsors are needed! For $100, your name (or your business name or lodge’s name) will be posted at a hole and will be listed in the March edition of Hermann Sons Life. There will be a golf ball drop during the tournament for a chance to win a gift card. Information about how you can have a chance at winning will be released next month. The Grief Support Session is a half-week camp adventure for children ages 6-17 that will be held July 5-8 at Hermann Sons LifeCamp. It is for members and non-members who have lost a loved one. Volunteer program staff and licensed therapists will work together to create a special stay for children. Comfort School of Dance entertains during holidays
Students from the Comfort School of Dance spread holiday cheer in several ways this year. Besides performing at the Comfort Lodge Christmas party (see photos on Page 18), the children rode in the Comfort Christmas parade and performed at the Retirement Home.

Houston Lodge will host installation of officers Jan. 8 Lodge members participated in the Wreaths Across America ceremony on Dec. 17 at the Houston National Cemetery in observance of Make a Difference Day. This was the first year that enough wreaths were donated to put a wreath on every gravesite. At the November meeting President Falkenberg introduced new member Rebeka Dunsmore. Pat Bushman recommended her. Pat Bushman and Doris and Gary Falkenberg attended a Leadership Summit on Oct. 29 in Brenham. Veterans in attendance were recognized. They included Gary Falkenberg, Air Force; Milton Fuchs, Air Force; Jack Manchack,
Air Force; Reuben Heldberg, Air National Guard; and Clyde Muske, Army. The officers elected and appointed for 2017 include Gary Falkenberg, president; Pat Bushman, vice president; Lavina Patterson, treasurer; Doris Falkenberg, corresponding secretary; Darrell Muske, trustee for one year; James Ellison, trustee for two years; and Jackie Bushman, trustee for three years. for recommending the most new lodge members in 2016. Doris Falkenberg received the Humanitarian Award for her volunteer work. She volunteers with the Jersey Village Police Citizens Academy and the Region 2 Department of Public Safety Citizens Academy Alumni Association. She is a member of the Jersey Village Police TCLOE Training Committee, block captain for National Night Out and flower chairperson and usher for Epiphany Lutheran Church. She is a 50-year plus member of Hermann Sons and has served as lodge Finance Committee member, recording secretary and cheerperson.

Zuehl Lodge presents pins during Christmas party SEGUIN – Zuehl Lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 3. Members were happy to have Grand Finance Committee Member Janice Kuhen as their guest. She brought greetings from the Grand Lodge and also presented a number of membership pins. Rose Lee Pfeil was presented a 70-year membership pin. She joined on Nov. 2, 1946. Alex Schaefer received his 60-year membership pin. He joined on March 22, 1956. Receiving their 50-year membership pins were Loretta Corkran, a member since Aug. 12, 1966; Wayne Koltermann and Christine Volkmann, both members since Aug. 19, 1966; Ruth Ann Schumann, a member since Aug. 18, 1966; and Betty Smith, a member since Oct. 20, 1966. Many attendance prizes were awarded and an appreciation card was presented to Sister Kuhen. Officers were reminded of the installation coming up on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Seguin Lodge Hall hosted by Laubach Lodge. Get-well wishes go out to Financial Secretary Dorothy Luensmann who recently had surgery and to any other members who may be ill. San Marcos Lodge hosts Christmas celebration SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge members welcomed Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss and wife Elizabeth to their Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Zorn Bowling Club. Yvonne and Bob Robbins greeted the guest at the registration table. Guests brought non-perishable food to be donated to the San Marcos Food Bank. Everyone enjoyed playing games for coins and the poinsettias that served as table decorations along with candy canes. Mary Lou and Billy Preuss, Betty Rust, Bruce Moreau, Mary Jane and Marshall Smith decorated the tables. Peggy Meiners was the games caller. Youth Coordinator Shirley Faske served as Santa’s elf and delivered toys to the youth in attendance. Evelyn Moreau prepared guessing games. Fredericksburg presents Humanitarian Award FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge presented the 2016 Humanitarian Award to Katherine Cornehl during the Dec. 6 Christmas party. Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer Mary Beam and husband Mike were special guests from the Home Office. They joined members for the catered meal of turkey and the trimmings. President Hans Enderlin thanked Windy Duecker, Lola Enderlin, Margaret Priess, Katherine Cornehl and Edgar Priess for their help with the party arrangements. Brother Enderlin announced that the installation of officers is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 15, in Comfort. Elected and appointed officers were asked to make reservations during the January lodge meeting. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3. Round Top presents pin at annual Christmas party
ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge held its Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 11. A meal featuring chicken fried pork steaks was served along with a table full of desserts. Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe and wife Cheryl attended. Brother Kolbe presented a 50-year membership pin to Lanette Williams. She lives in Carmine and has been a member since Sept. 23, 1966. A gift exchange followed. Jim Mattocks received the mystery gift. Doris Georges won the guessing game. The lodge also met Nov. 17 at the American Legion Hall. President Linda Mattocks, who also serves as the lodge’s agent, reviewed interest rates on annuities. She also gave a report on husband’s Jim’s recent heart surgery. Lila Garlin shared information about her visit with Gerry Banik. He sent his thanks for the monetary donation the lodge had made toward his recovery. Best wishes were sent to Edna Meinkowsky who attends faithfully. Bob and Betty Porter celebrated their anniversary in November.

COLUMBUS – Columbus Lodge members gathered at Mikeska’s Restaurant on Dec. 12 for the Christmas party. Special guests were Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland and Robin Maertz, wife of Agent Terrel Maertz. The group enjoyed a meal of
ribeye steaks with baked potato and slaw or salad. Two members were scheduled to receive their membership pins but they could not attend. They are Anne Stolle Faichtinger, a member since Nov. 15, 1966; and Janet Wienken, a member since Nov. 1, 1956. Their pins will

Comfort Lodge holds annual Christmas party Dancers stage Polar Express performances COMFORT – Comfort Lodge held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 11. The Comfort School of Dance students took guests on a ride on the Polar Express with their dance performances choreographed by Aimee Miller. Dr. Robert Young was presented the Humanitarian Award. Dr. Young has been a contributor to the Comfort community on a personal level and through Bending Branch Winery. He is a member of the board for the Hill Country Montessori School. He is president of the Comfort Area Foundation, a group focusing on community-wide strategic planning. He is the founder and winemaker at Bending Branch Winery, located just next door to Hermann Sons Life-Camp. Through his business, he provides support to the community through the Chamber of Commerce and other nonprofits. Additionally, Bending Branch Winery has supported groups like the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and regularly provides auction items to groups to use in fund-raising efforts, including the Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund. In February, Bending Branch Winery was a major partner with Comfort Lodge in raising money for the Golden Age Center through a Riedel Wine Tasting. With his help, more than $5,400 was raised for the Golden Age Center. This was Comfort Lodge’s most successful fund-raiser to date and the size of the contribution would not have been as substantial without the generosity of Bending Branch Winery and Dr. Robert Young. – Reporter

Sandra Duncan, lodge president and agent, reported that she attended the continuing education workshop for agents in Comfort in October. A $50 donation will be made to the Hermann Sons LifeCamp in memory of Tom Halloran. Carmen Rittiman reported that she sent a sympathy card to his family. Camper Claire Schaeferkoeter presented a report on her week at Camp this year. She said it was an awesome experience.

Vineta will begin New Year with meeting on Jan. 5 SAN ANTONIO – It doesn’t seem possible that another year has passed but 2016 is history. During the year, Vineta Lodge celebrated 115 years as a lodge. All of the fund-raisers and gatherings would not have been accomplished without the help of officers and members. The New Year will begin on Jan. 5 with chili and tamales on the menu. A social will be held Jan. 18 with Bunco and a surprise lunch. In December, Grand President Buddy Preuss was in attendance and shared holiday greetings. Members enjoyed a ham dinner, apple pie and ice cream. Dallas electes 2017 officers, delegates DALLAS – Dallas Lodge will meet Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. Officers were elected at the Nov. 20 business meeting. Elected to serve in 2017 were president, Andy Schellenberg; vice president, Clint Holmes; financial secretary/treasurer, Steve Schellenberg; and financial trustees, Eva Day and Terri and Clint Holmes. The appointed coordinators will be communication, Clint Holmes; youth, Terri Holmes; membership, Steve Schellenberg and community, Eva Day. Steve Schellenberg was elected to serve the lodge as its delegate to the Grand Lodge Convention in May. Terri Holmes is the alternate. Home Association directors from Dallas Lodge will be Eva Day, Clint and Terri Holmes and Andy and Steve Schellenberg. During a special meeting on Nov. 6, members approved a $500 donation to the Home Association to purchase point of sale (POS) equipment for the Dallas
Hall. This new equipment will allow the Hall to accept credit/debit cards for payment for drinks, food and merchandise and improve accounting and inventory. Of course, cash will still be accepted. Columbia Lodge also donated $500. Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss attended the Dallas/Columbia Merger-Consolidation Committee meeting. He presented helpful information and answered questions. Members approved changes to the lodge’s bylaws. Social members who don’t participate will be deleted from the membership roster. Dues will be increased by $1 for adults and 50 cents for juniors. Congratulations are in order for several members. Louise C. Smith of Flower Mound is now an 85year member. She joined on Dec. 11, 1931. Seventy-year members include Mary C. Cabezas of Oxnard, Ca-
lif., and Carolyn S. Millard of Ann Arbor, Mich. They both joined on Dec. 18, 1946. Two others have now been members for 60 years. They are Michael C. Marion hosts appreciation dinner In observance of Make a Difference Day, Marion Lodge joined the Immaculate Conception Ladies Guild and the Marion Lions Club in hosting an appreciation dinner for local law enforcement personnel and first responders from the Marion area. A total of 50 people enjoyed a home-cooked Mexican dinner and homemade desserts. Children from the local elementary school drew pictures and wrote letters to thank these people for protecting them and their families. Many volunteers from the host organizations were present to meet and greet and extend their appreciation. Lodge President Bobbie Ray is pictured with three of the people honored that evening.

Seguin Lodge celebrates holiday season with party SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge members and guests celebrated the holiday season at the annual Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 11. Cibolo holds presentations during Christmas party CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge held its annual Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Schertz Community Center. Grand Vice PresidentInvestments Harry Werland was a special guest from the Home Office. He presented membership pins. This year the lodge had 15 people scheduled to receive their 50-year pins, another six receiving their 60-year pins and one receiving a 70-year pin. Grand Vice President Werland and lodge President John Gray presented the Cibolo Volunteer Fire Department with the proceeds from the lodge’s rummage sale along with Matching Funds from the Home Office. The donations totaled $1,120. Scott VanDerhoof, president of the Cibolo Volunteer Fire Department, and Wallace Mack accepted the funds. They also gave a presentation and offered advice on how to remain safe this holiday season and throughout the year. If you have a question for them, call the non-emergency line. Anthony Schneider also delivered a presentation dealing with heart attack awareness, specifically what many know as the widowmaker. Although a grim topic to many, knowing what to look for and seeking immediate care can save you or a loved one. More than 60 dancers performed to various Christmas songs. A total of 200 dinner tickets were sold this year and that is more than in the past. Next Door Catering served salad, green beans, mashed potatoes and bacon wrapped chicken. Members provided the desserts. The 50/50 drawing and prize drawing were a hit. There were great prizes to be won, including gift baskets and even a dancing Santa. The big winner of the evening was Justin Triesch who took home $219 in the 50/50 drawing. The other $219 went into the lodge’s scholarship fund.

A Matching Funds presentation was made at the Cibolo Lodge Christmas party. Gulf presents Humanitarian Award at holiday party LA MARQUE – Gulf Lodge held its quarterly meeting and Christmas party on Dec. 4 at Kelley’s in La Marque. Welcomed by way of transfer were Natalie Billot, Russell Gus Derrick and Loretta Lynn Derrick. The lodge is mourning the passing of Marion Brick on Nov. 12. Flowers were sent to her funeral. Member Dorothy Cathcart is still undergoing chemo treatments but is in good spirits. Ruby Wulf was presented the Humanitarian Award. She has been a member since 2008 and is currently serving as historian. Ruby is a member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston and the GloriAnas Ladies Group. She recently participated in that group’s purse project, filling purses with hygiene products to distribute to homeless women. She is a member of the Hitchcock Chamber of Commerce and Hitchcock Heritage Society helping with bake sales for both organizations, raising money for scholarships and museum maintenance. KARNES CITY – Karnes City Lodge presented the 2016 Humanitarian Award to David Purser in recognition of his service to the lodge and community. President Vernon Fenner Jr. presented the certificate during the annual Christmas party on Dec. 13. David graduated from Karnes City High School in 1977. He is the son of Clareda Purser and the late Kenneth Purser. He completed is undergraduate and master’s degrees in animal science at Texas A&M University. He later earned his teaching certificate. Hondo Victory holds annual Christmas dinner party HONDO – Hondo Victory Lodge held its annual Christmas dinner party at the Hermann Sons Restaurant on Dec. 14. Christmas Committee members Aurline Tschirhart, Ouida Samford and Verlie Nietenhoefer decorated the party room at the restaurant and were in charge of the program for the evening. Humanitarian Award Committee members, Loraine Miller, Aurline Tschirhart and Irene Cox, presented the 2016 Humanitarian Award to Connie Muniz. Connie volunteers to drive people to doctor appointments, the grocery store or wherever they may need to go. She helps with games at the Community Care Center every month and is a member of the Medina Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She works in the hospital gift shop run by the auxiliary. Connie is a member of the Medina County Food Pantry board and works at the pantry every month. She also is very active at St. John’s Catholic Church and works with the St. Vincent DePaul program. She also is a member of the St. John’s Altar Society and the Guadalupana Society. Highland Lakes plans next meeting for March 5 HIGHLAND HAVEN - Highland Lakes Lodge met at the Highland Haven Community Center on Sunday, Dec. 4, at noon. Wayne Pehl was welcomed by way of transfer. He could not attend the meeting because of surgery. Members wish him a speedy recovery. Also missed were Robert Morton and Lela Fields. Agent Jim Embrey reported he will be retiring as an agent at the end of 2016. The current slate of officers was re-elected for 2017 and includes Jim Embrey, president; Linda Enderlin, vice president; Terry Embrey, secretary-treasurer; and Joe Schott, a three-year term as a financial trustee. was reappointed membership coordinator and Grace Seguin was reappointed community coordinator. Jim Embrey will be the delegate for the Grand Lodge Convention with Fritz Friesenhahn serving as the alternate. In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge made donations to the Sharing the Harvest food bank in Kingsland, the Joseph’s Pantry food bank in Granite Shoals and the Christmas Outreach program in Granite Shoals that provides Christmas toys to unfortunate children in the area. Linda Enderlin and Pat Malone were the split-the-pot winners. They donated their prizes to “Hugs from Home” and the lodge
matched their contributions. Members enjoyed a ham dinner served after the meeting. Ted and Betty Winder brought the ham and members provided the side dishes and desserts. Each family was given a Christmas poinsettia. The next meeting will be at the Highland Haven Community Center on March 5. Jim Embrey will provide chili, Joanne Butler will bring beans and Fritz Friesenhahn has agreed to procure tamales from Reuben’s in San Antonio. The highlights of the evening were the presentation of the proceeds from the Bob Worrick Memorial Golf Tournament to representatives of Camp Discovery and the presentation of the Humanitarian Award to Judge Johnny Primomo. Some of the financial donors and tournament workers were present for the presentation of the tournament proceeds and their contribution to the success of the event was honored. SAN ANTONIO – Mission-Alamo Lodge members enjoyed the annual pre-holiday party Nov. 20. All of the volunteers pulled together to make the party a smashing success. The children’s arts and crafts center was great fun thanks to Denise Wright and her helpers. Before Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus arrived the children sang carols, which put everyone in the holiday spirit. Each child received a Christmas bag and a candy cane. Members Kathy Wilson and Celeste Delgado each won $50 and Mary Himes won the M&M contest. Lamar Ratto and Norma Palacios accepted the donated toys for the DePelchin’s Children’s Center. Special guest was Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek. The next meeting will be Jan. 25. The 2017 calendar will be discussed. Everyone is welcome. McGregor presents Humanitarian Award

McGREGOR – McGregor Lodge met Dec. 7 with members and guests enjoying a meal prepared by Leona Hendrickson and Doris Mooney along with a lot of fellowship, singing and gifts. Members enjoyed Christmas “guessing what’s in the package.” The expert was Geraldine Witt Palmer. After she won all the gifts she revealed that she has a lot of experience at this game because she plays with her grandchildren. She felt bad about winning all of the gifts so she gave one away. President Doris Mooney presented the 2016 Humanitarian Award to Annie Leos. She delivers Meals on Wheels, plays board games with seniors at the Senior Center, bakes cookies for them and is involved in her church and community making tamales and sells them to benefit the town and organizations. She volunteers for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life as a cancer survivor, the McGregor Founder’s Day, the Christmas parade and Breakfast with Santa. She helps raise funds for missionaries around the world and helps teach English to children

Montgomery celebrates at Incredible Pizza Louise Schuetze Lodge celebrated Christmas in the Rathskeller on Monday, Dec. 12. The 2016 Humanitarian Award was presented to Alice Naughton, a 60-year member of the lodge. She is pictured here with her daughters, Judith, Mary, Lizzie and Kathleen. Margaret Ivens, a member of Louise Schuetze Lodge, celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 7. After holding other offices, she served as president in 1989-1990. She also was a member of the Drill Team for several years. She was a delegate to Grand Lodge Conventions and served on the lodge’s Centennial Committee. She was active in Hermann’s Happiness working in the booth and making flowers and cascarones. Margaret was married to the late Bill Ivens, a member of Harmonia Lodge for 65 years. She has three children, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She currently resides at The Cottages.
CONROE – Montgomery Lodge celebrated Christmas at Incredible Pizza. The children played games while the adults held their meeting. Thanks go to the members who donated toys for Toys for Tots and food for the Montgomery County Food Bank. The current officers were reelected and reminded to attend the installation in January. Robert Prewitt will serve as the lodge’s delegate to the Grand Lodge Convention in May. Flyers listing the dates for the 2017 meetings were distributed. They will be held on Feb. 20, April 17, Sept. 18 and Dec. 12. Randy Locke, Marie Waxler, Kasey Ballman, Carolyn Rine and Elaine Swaim took home door prizes. – Reporter
