each year to junior members pursuing higher education as they prepare to be the leaders of our communities.

They are the Kypfer-Salge Lodge members who hold a Valentine Bunco Party to raise funds for the St. Jude’s Ranch for children. And they are the members of Pershing Lodge who have perfected the art of preparing and serving large amounts of spaghetti to raise

funds to overcome homelessness in San Antonio.

They are the members of Harmonia Lodge who Tee it Up for a Cause and raise funds for children with cancer and brave law enforcement officers, firefighters and their families. And they are the compassionate volunteers at our Hermann Sons Life Camp Grief Support Session who are helping children cope with the loss of a special loved one.

They are the members of Houston Lodge who joined hands with other Houston groups, more than 250 strong, for a day of volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. And they are the Paige Lodge members who sponsor an annual chili supper fund-raiser to benefit their local 4-H Club.

The list goes on and on.

Member information forms being processed ASAP SAN ANTONIO – The Home Office recently mailed more than 74,000 Name Change Endorsement letters to all certificate holders.

Everyone is reminded to attach the Name Change Endorsement page to your life insurance certifiate or annuity contract.

Included in the envelope was a form that asks for updated in-

formation about the member including name, address, phone number and email address.

The form also asks for information regarding how you want your Hermann Sons Life newspaper delivered - by regular mail or email.

And there is a place for members to indicate if they would like for an agent to contact them

about their life insurance needs.

More than 9,000 of these forms have been returned so far and more are expected.

Many of these forms have been processed, but thousands more still need to be processed.

The Home Office staff is asking members to be patient as they continue to process these forms .

The number of people who have never heard of Hermann Sons Life amazes me. When they learn that we are part of the larger fraternal benefit system they usually ask, “What makes Hermann Sons Life different from other life insurance companies?” My answer is always the same: “It’s our members.”

Our members are not just insurance policy holders. They are the heartbeat of our organization.

Oscar Kuehner dies at age 85 SAN ANTONIO – Herman Oscar Kuehner, a 51-year member of Hermann Sons Life and longtime legal counsel, passed away Dec. 9 at the age of 85.

Oscar joined Siemering Lodge on Oct. 11, 1966, and was an honorary member of several other lodges.

During his years at the Home Office, he served as second vice president and then first vice president.

He retired in 1997 but remained a member of the Laws Committee and served as legal counsel for the organization.

He was born in 1932 in San Antonio and lived his entire life there except for his years of service in the U.S. Army.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Mary’s University and became a certified public accountant. He later returned to St. Mary’s Herman Oscar Kuehner and got his doctorate in law and practiced law until about 10 years ago.

He is survived by wife Rose. They wed in June 1958 and were married for 59½ years. He is also survived by a son, Richard Oscar Kuehner, who lives in Wimberley.

He was preceded in death by his brother.

He was president of the Law Section of the National Fraternal Congress of America and was named to Who’s Who in America. He was a member of the Sierra Club, the Northwest Lions Club and the San Antonio Executive Association.

Rose recalls fondly that Oscar loved music and could play the piano and clarinet. She says they often attended musical events including symphony concerts.

Brenda Treiber passes at age 67 COMFORT – Brenda Treiber, the assistant manager at the Retirement Home, passed away Jan. 13 at the age of 67.

She had been employed at the Retirement Home for 13 years and was a member of Comfort Lodge.

Brenda is survived by husband Ralph E. Treiber of Waring, son Anthony John Treiber of Amarillo, daughters Theresa Natalie Treiber of Waring and Elizabeth Viktoria Kerl of Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers Charles and Lori Bauchman of Medina Valley and John S. Bauchman of Comfort and brother-in-law David Marquez DeLaPlata of San Antonio.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Schaetter Funeral Home in Comfort with the Rev. Jim Holt officiating.

Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament will be held at Golf Club of Texas. Cost to play is $100 per person.

The tournament will use a four-person scramble format. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The entry fee includes green fees, range balls, one Mulligan per player, lunch and awards. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Entry and payment deadline is March 31. Chili, bean cook-off set for March in Comfort COMFORT – It’s time to dig your favorite chili and bean recipes out of the drawer and dust off that pot . The annual Retirement Home Chili Cook-Off and Bean CookOff are just a few weeks away .

The two cook-offs, scheduled this year for March 9-10, offer participants a good time for a good cause . The good cause is the Retirement Home’s Scholarship Fund .

This year, once again, proceeds will be used to award five $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have been members of Hermann Sons Life for at least five years .

Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger encourages lodges to get a team together and head for the beautiful Hill Country for a weekend of fun .

The fun begins with a cooks’ party at 6

The cooking portion of the weekend begins at 8 a .m . Saturday morning when the cooks fire up their stoves .

Later in the day, the teams will do their best to entertain visitors with their showmanship acts .

Bean judging begins at 12 noon with

amateur chili due in at 1 p .m . and CASI sanctioned chili judging beginning at 2 p .m .

Entry fees for the competition are $20 for CASI sanctioned chili cooks and $15 for amateurs . Bean cooks pay $10 to enter .

The top three bean entries will win cash prizes . The top CASI cooks will be competing for points so they can advance to the International Championship Chili Cook-off in Terlingua .

Another aspect of the event is a drawing with lots of prizes to be won . Tickets will be for sale that day .

There is plenty of room for recreational vehicles to park on the lower level at the Home .

Proud protection that makes a difference

People taking care of people.

Family, friends and neighbors coming together for the common good. It happened in towns and communities all across rural Texas; on the farms, country stores, community and church halls in remote places with little more than a dirt road.

Folks didn’t travel much, because a horse-drawn wagon was slow or early automobile unreliable on rough or soggy terrain. How many of you owe your existence to the midwife who helped deliver your greatgrandparents?

Whether it was raising a barn, or caring for a sick neighbor, people relied upon each other because…… well, because they had to. Life was hard enough without help, and folks banding together was the best way to get things done. People were much closer back then, in

spirit if not in distance. Community social events carried special significance and everyone attended and enjoyed the fellowship, for soon it was back to a solitary existence toiling in the fields or in the factory shop.

When a community member died, everyone pitched in to help. The plate was passed and donations came in to help with the funeral and the time afterwards. The assistance did not end with the death of the member, but continued in support of the surviving family.

That is how social groups like Hermann Sons Life came into existence. People taking care of people.

In today’s world, funeral and associated costs can be upwards of $15,000 or more.

Although it’s difficult to raise funds to pay for such an event in this day and age, Hermann Sons Life and its affiliated lodges and members provide assistance to families with visits,

handy work and inclusion in lodge activities. We began as a social safety net for members in our communities, and continue to do so to this day. Our members, singly or collectively, doing good works for the betterment of others. It’s who we are.

In addition to the human element of providing assistance, we offer solid and affordable life insurance and annuity products which helps our members pay for the modern costs of paying funeral expenses and providing for the current and future financial protection of the family. Mattocks, Krauss lead the way in sales SAN ANTONIO – Two agents are being recognized with cash bonuses for their sales efforts in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Linda Mattocks from Round Top Lodge and Carol Krauss from Pershing Lodge each wrote seven applications during the quarter.

Carol’s applications generated $9,255 in new premium income while Linda’s generated $6,443.

Linda is assigned to Region 1 and Carol is assigned to Region 5.

Agents are assigned to regions and must write a minimum of six applications and generate at least $3,000 in new premium income to qualify for the bonus

money. Special representatives are not eligible for quarterly bonuses.

Earning special recognition in the applications category were Special Representative Becki Carley, 16; Special Representative Teresa Saathoff, 13; Mary Koenig from Hochheim-Prairie Lodge, 10; Laura Tiffin from Cuero Family Lodge and Dennis Wigginton from El Campo Lodge, 8; and Norma Bruns from Comfort Lodge, 6.

Special recognition in the new premium income generated category went to Special Representative Teresa Saathoff, $16,444;

Special Representative Becki Carley, $12,038; Betty Murphy from the Retirement Home, $9,070; Dennis Henke from Fredericksburg Lodge, $5,843; Special Representative Gary Falkenberg, $5,060; and Special Representative Dan Boenig, $4,755.

Honorable mention in the premium income generated category went to David Wolf from Wichita Falls Lodge, $3,980; Shirley Faske from San Marcos Lodge, $3,945; Glenford Boehme from Castroville Lodge, $3,620; and Elizabeth Cutsinger from Poth Lodge, $3,409.

Everyone can help lodges meet 2018 member goals

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing SAN ANTONIO – Although 2017 is now long gone in our rearview mirrors, I want to take a minute to thank those agents who strove for significant production in 2017.

We will honor the top producers at a banquet in May. The “Protection you can be proud of” Lodge Membership Growth Campaign is now under way.

Lodges should have already received or will soon receive their 2018 new member goal in the mail.

Lodges that meet their new member goal will receive a $100 bonus. Those that show an overall increase in mem-

bership for the year will receive an extra $50.

We urge everyone to become a part of the effort to increase membership by recommending a new member this year. Every time you recommend someone who meets with an agent and completes an application, you are eligible to receive a $100 gift card.

A winner will be drawn every month.

Thanks go to all those who recommended a new member in 2017. Let’s all pull together to make 2018 a great year for Hermann Sons Life.

Residents enjoy December’s surprise snowfall

On Dec. 10, the San Antonio School of Dance students entertained and treated residents to an afternoon of dancing and refreshments.

Wonder of wonders, the Home enjoyed snow flurries on Dec. 7.

Due to the wet ground, we were not blessed with any accumulation. No snowmen for us but the joy and excitement of watching snow fall was very entertaining.

Resident Roland Naumann’s daughter, Julie Sheldon, sent in a report about his trip to Panama City, Florida,å for Thanksgiving.

His granddaughter, Michelle Sheldon, made arrangements for the family to get together at a condo on the beach in Florida.

Roland said the view was spec-

tacular and he really enjoyed having his morning coffee on the balcony watching the sunrise and the sunsets were equally beautiful. Michelle cooked a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for the group including a turkey and all the special trimmings.

Relaxation and enjoying each other’s company was the focus of the trip. One day they did take a drive close by to Destin, Florida, where they took a boat ride and experienced some fantastic close up views of dolphins that swam by the boat and periodically leaped out of the water.

Snoring can lead to higher risk of Alzheimer’s tack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well.

A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders.

Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12 years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleeprelated breathing issues.

Mild cognitive impairment of-

ten precedes dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease.

Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

If snoring has become problematic, men are urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know.

Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring.

Furthermore, the NSF says

anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring.

Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse.

While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.

Youth in Action Camp directors busy preparing for summer sessions

Registration for the 2018 summer at Hermann Sons Life Camp will begin in just a few weeks.

Members who will be between the ages of 9 and 13 as of Sept. 1 will be receiving a brochure and login credentials in mid-March.

Executive Camp Director Katie Miller and the directors at Hilltop Camp and Riverside Camp are already hard at work preparing for the summer.

Katie will be returning for her 11th summer at Camp and her third summer as the Executive Camp Director.

Hilltop Camp Hunter “Papa Bear” Miller will be returning for his fourth summer as Hilltop Camp Director and his 12th summer on staff.

This summer Hunter will be assisted by Cole “E-loc” Bendele who will be returning for his fourth summer on staff. This will be his first year as the Hilltop Assistant Camp Director, but Cole has spent the past two summers as a Senior Counselor.

Hunter works full-time as a

third grade math teacher at Tally Elementary in the Kerrville ISD. In addition to his classroom duties, he is also the robotics coach for the school.

Cole is a junior at Texas Tech University where he is an agricultural business major. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Cole is also a member of the Meat Judging Team for the Red Raiders. Last year he was a member of the National Western winning Wool Judging Team.

Riverside Camp Kelly “Knee Slapper” Harris will be serving as Riverside Camp Director this year. Kelly has spent the past two summers as a senior counselor and climbing specialist. This will be her sixth summer on staff at Hermann Sons Life Camp.

Kelly is currently a senior at the University of Texas-San Antonio where she is majoring in kinesiology with an athletic medicine concentration. Harris is also active in her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, where she served

as the Membership Education Vice President in 2017.

Serving as the Assistant Director at Riverside will be Vicky “Tricky” Chavez. She has previously served as a senior counselor and range specialist at Camp.

This will be her fifth summer on staff.

Vicky is currently a junior at Texas A&M University-College Station. She is majoring in civil engineering with a concentration in environmental engineering. Vicky is currently the treasurer for the National Association of Environmental Professionals, is a worship team leader for Treehouse, and is the top ranked female in club racquetball at A&M. Katie remarked, “I am very excited to be working with such a great group of directors who truly have a passion for Camp!

Camp staff donates to Children’s Bereavement Center Hermann Sons Life Camp staff donated almost $400 during their Christmas party to the Children’s Bereavement Center in San Antonio. The money was used to buy canvases and paints that will be used in programs at the center. leigh gAffney In 2018, three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the fall semester. The scholarship provides money to graduating high school seniors who are current members of Hermann Sons Life who attended Hermann Sons Life Camp. Premiums and dues must be current in order to apply.

Deadline to apply is March 1.

Comfort Lodge to host benefit golf tournament COMFORT – Comfort Lodge is hosting its second annual golf tournament to raise funds to sponsor children to attend the Hermann Sons Life Camp Grief Support Session being held July 8-11. Last year, tournament proceeds made it possible for five children to attend the session.

This year’s tournament is being held at The Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort on Saturday, March 24.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the tournament begins at 8:30 a.m.

The tournament will use a four-person scramble format.

The cost to play is $70 per golfer or $280 per team.

The fee per golfer includes green fees, one Mulligan, range balls, a lunch reception and a VIP ticket to replay at The Buckhorn Golf Course for only a $15 cart fee.

Awards will be presented to the first, second and third place teams. Hole contests will also be played.

This fund was established in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney. Shannon was a camper and counselor for eight summers at Hermann Sons Life Camp. Although taken from her family and friends too soon, her memory and enthusiasm for Camp lives on through this scholarship program.

Applicants must submit documentation of their scholastic record, two letters of reference testifying to their talents and

character, and an essay titled “How Being a Hermann Sons Life Camper Helped to Shape the Person I Am Today.”

RetiReMent hoMe SCholARShiP The five $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to one student from each of the five Hermann Sons Life regions.

Each applicant must be a member of Hermann Sons Life for a minimum of five years and have a certificate of insurance and local lodge dues paid up on the date of the filing of the application.

High school grades will have no bearing on who receives these scholarships. As part of the application, students must write an essay of 300 words or less on what Hermann Sons Life means to them.

Scholarships will be awarded to first-year college students only and may be used at any four-year university, two-year community college or trade school of the student’s choosing.

Deadline to apply is April 1.

The first Seguin Lodge Food Truck Festival in September 2017 was such a success a second one has been scheduled for Feb. 24.

Seguin plans next Food Truck Festival SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge will host its second Food Truck Festival on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the lodge hall located at 2918 W. Kingsbury St. in Seguin.

The event will include food trucks, shopping, live music and a prize drawing.

According to organizers, this second event will include food trucks selling a diverse menu with something for almost every palate and craving. So far, the food trucks that will be there include Goldstone Pizza, Mister Softee San Antonio, Sticky C’s, Dona Kika’s Tacos and Gorditas and Grouchy Mama’s.

Inside the hall there will be eating areas, with lodge members manning the bar offering craft and domestic brews includ-

ing plenty of Shiner, the sacred beer of Texas. Sodas, wine coolers and water also will be available.

Almost two dozen vendors have already signed up to be there with more expected.

The first food truck festival was held last fall and was a great success. It was the first time a food truck event had been held in the Seguin area.

Five trucks were on hand that day, including one that featured a mobile wood-fired oven that was baking a hand made from scratch margarita pizza. All the trucks turned out some delicious fresh made offerings.

Craft and product vendors filled the lodge hall and there were more set up in the parking and grassy areas behind the hall.

There was a fishpond and face painting for the children.

“This was truly a family friendly event, which is a hallmark of Hermann Sons Life,” according to Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe, a member of Seguin Lodge.

He added, “One of the trucks sold out of product in just three hours, and they were so excited about the volume, they signed up right away to attend this February’s festival. The vendors were similarly impressed with the sales. Many folks came and perused the sale items, enjoyed the entertainment, and just hung out with friends. Many found out about it through Facebook and tweeted about the event, which kept the crowds coming until the end.”

More than two dozen vendors have signed up to be at the second Seguin Lodge Food Truck Festival on Feb. 24.

Siemering Lodge plans game night for February SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge installed its new officers at the January meeting.

Other topics of discussion were the yearly calendar and the lodge’s Join Hands Day project.

Sharon Fite and Sally Hertzberg provided the New Year’s Day themed meal of BLT sandwiches.

The bacon represented putting money in the piggy bank, and the fact that when pigs dig with their snouts they always move forward, not backwards.

The lettuce represented money coming in the new year.

The tomato is red for prosperity.

The small round corn tortilla chips that were served with the sandwiches represented gold coins.

Outgoing President Ana Vasquez was presented with a Texas-shaped plaque in appreciation of her efforts to better the lodge.

It will be game night at the February meeting.

A variety of games will be available. Dinner and dessert will have a Valentine’s Day theme. Be sure to wear pink and red.

Bellville Lodge held its Christmas meeting on Dec. 18 at the Sens Center in Bellville. The lodge provided the fried chicken and members brought side dishes and desserts. Everyone enjoyed the gift exchange game. Celebrating a December birthday was Emily Pfeffer, pictured. The next meeting will be held Feb. 26.

Vice President of Member Benefits Kim Krueger and President Vernon Fenner Jr. presented 70year membership pins to Mary Schulz, a member since April 4, 1948; Kenneth Schulz, a member since Feb. 17, 1948; and Mary Hickok, a member since Feb. 10, 1948. A 60-year membership pin was presented to Frances Kempe, a member since Jan. 26, 1958; and 50-year membership pins were presented to Sue Schulz Jambers, a member since Nov. 3, 1967, and Jonathan Schulz, a member since Dec. 7, 1967.

Each member shared memories of their early days as members.

The Humanitarian Award was presented to Julie Braun. She has been a member since Sept.

5, 1969. A life-long resident of Karnes City, she spent 25 years as an educator and principal in Karnes County. She serves as secretary and now vice president of the board of the Children’s Alliance of South Texas. She also heads the organization’s fundraising.

Julie also serves on the board of the Karnes County Healing Hearts Ministry and does chaplain work for Otto Kaiser Hospital.

She started an ecumenical movement called “Feed My Sheep” to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. It provided hot meals for those staying in hotels.

Hondo Victory presents award during holiday party HONDO – Hondo Victory Lodge members gathered for a Christmas party at Hermann Sons Steak House on Dec. 13.

The Christmas Committee members welcomed guests as they arrived and asked them to guess the number of Christmas candies in a jar. Later in the evening, it was announced that Richard Moos was the winner and he was presented with the candy.

Loraine Miller read a thankyou letter from HANK, Inc. (Helping Abused and Neglected Kids). Members voted to take up a collection for the organization instead of holding a gift exchange.

The December collection was $36 for the “Hugs from Home” jar that is placed at the Hondo Dairy Queen. The money is collected each month and sent to the Home Office. Items are purchased and sent to military personnel serving overseas. The lodge appreciates Clifford Reed of the Dairy Queen for allowing the lodge to place the collection jar at the restaurant.

President Betty Newman welcomed everyone and read a Christmas greetings letter from the Home Office. Pye Haass offered the prayer.

As a teacher, Karen was known to go “above and beyond” for her students. At her church, St. John’s Catholic Church, she has served as Eucharistic minister and lay reader, visited the sick, took communion to the homebound, helped care for altar cloths and served on the Bereavement Committee. She also dedicated numerous hours to the church’s historical society.

Karen also helps those who are ill by providing rides to doctor appointments, assisting patients with medical documents and phone calls to get medicines and equipment and she was also an American Cancer Society volunteer.

Karen recognized her husband, Richard Moos, who was in attendance.

After the meal, special guest Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe introduced his wife Cheryl. He shared Christmas greetings from the Home Office and thanked the lodge for the invitation.

Sealy presents award to Leschper

SEALY – Sealy Lodge presented Angela Leschper of Sealy with the Humanitarian Award at the Dec. 21 Christmas meeting.

Angela has traveled all over the world for Farouk Systems since 1993. She’s been a hairstylist for the Miss Universe organization and has traveled to Vietnam, the Bahamas and other locations to style hair for Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants.

She has held many jobs in the Farouk Systems organization.

Most recently she has worked as on-site manager for the new

Esquire Men’s Grooming line at all the major hair shows across the United States.

This year in Cancun at the Farouk Systems International Conference, Angela received the CHI Schools Educator of the Year Award. She was also awarded The Honorary Legend Award.

When at home, she has a shop in Diane’s Hair Design on Main Street in Sealy and volunteers for local organizations she loves.

Angela has been a part of Peters Hall since birth. Her father was the bar manager for

40 years and her mom held the office of treasurer when the membership was opened up to women.

She plays an active part in the production of the annual Mother’s Day BBQ at Peters Hall.

She served on a committee created to make the Main Street USA program in Sealy a reality. This program helped to build awareness in the community of the importance of preserving small-town heritage.

She is also active with the Sealy Historical Society.

Gulf elects officers, presents award during party LA MARQUE - Gulf Lodge will hold its next quarterly meeting on March 25 at Kelley’s Restaurant in La Marque.

The lodge Christmas party was held Dec. 3, also at Kelley’s Restaurant.

Guests from the Home Office were Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe and wife Cheryl.

Bill Graefe was welcomed back after a lengthy illness.

Officers were elected.

Two summer campers, Maverick Garner and Owen Bass, spoke about attending Hermann Sons Life Camp. Each received $100 from the lodge for sharing their experience.

The Humanitarian Award was presented to Vera Danner of Galveston. Vera is a member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston, where she has served as assistant pastor, taught Sunday school, worked with the Altar Guild, helped with the church newsletter and Oktoberfest, organized funeral meals and more. She has been active in the community volunteering with Meals on Wheels.

Flowers and a plaque were presented along with a check for $200 to donate to her favorite charity. She has selected the Galveston County Adoption Day Foundation.

Theresa Sanders-Smith, Marie Stryk and Ruby Wulf served on the Humanitarian Award Committee.

Zuehl Lodge pioneers receive pins Jeannie Campbell received her 60-year membership pin during the Zuehl Lodge Christmas party. Director Stan Steiger made the presentation. Jeannie has been a member since March 5, 1957.

BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge held its annual Christmas party on Wednesday, Dec. 13. The evening began with refreshments and fellowship.

President Terrel Maertz read a holiday greetings letter from the Home Office officers. Guests from the Home Office were Director David and wife Mary Novak. David spoke briefly Poinsettias were delivered to Joe and Arlene Trojacek, Milton Nelson, Jerome Wicke and Ruby Belle Heintschel who reside in the Columbus area.

After a prayer lead by Terrel, a meal was served featuring turkey, dressing and ham provided by the lodge and side dishes provided by members.

Joe Vykoukal and Kirk Berger won the poinsettias given away as door prizes.

Pershing Lodge to hold benefit spaghetti dinner Feb. 7 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will hold its Annual Deicke Memorial Spaghetti Benefit Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. A lodge meeting also will be held that night beginning at 7 p.m.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit SAMMinistries. The meal will be served in the Rathskeller of the San Antonio Home Association Building at 525 S. St. Mary’s St. Cost is $8 a plate for dine in or to go and includes tea. Desserts will be available for sale. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. Volunteers are always welcome to help with the preparation and serving of the meal as well as

clean up. Members are asked to bring store bought desserts to be sold.

Terri Armstrong reported that the lodge is sponsoring a trip to the Coushatta Casino on Sunday, Feb. 25. Cost will be $50 for Pershing Lodge members and $55 for guests. New activity cards will be ready soon.

Square Dancers look forward to lots of tips in 2018 SAN ANTONIO – Well the holidays are but memories and the Hermann Sons Square Dancers are looking forward to 2018 and dancing on the best dance floor in Texas.

The first dance of the year went well with great food and treats. Despite the cooler temperatures, there was a good turnout.

Caller Les Hughes kept things

moving along and was even a bit challenging at time, but always fun and light-hearted with both Mainstream and Plus. There also was a good group working the line dances in between tips.

It was good to see Mary Brown back up and joining in the tips.

Gene Jensen took Sami flying around the country visiting family and friends for the holidays.

He drives the sleigh and feeds

the reindeer. Sami does the chimney stuff all dressed in red and white, but no corncob pipe.

They were in Utah expecting snow, but that night the snow fell in San Antonio, by mistake we think.

Patty works for the Fort Sam Food Services and does a wonderful job of helping feed the active duty troops there.

The Sgambatis heard about

some folks singing, “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow - WAY UP NORTH this year” and it looks like that has all become true. Thanks for South Texas weather, even if some folks have to break out the sweaters for a week or two now and then.

It appears that most members had such a busy Christmas that they cruised quietly through the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Bielfelds set the norm or standard by going to bed after celebrating the New Year along with New York City. Others were awakened by the midnight fireworks but decided that the world was still safe and went back to sleep. Flu and winter colds abound. Praying everyone avoids them or recovers completely and quickly.

Houston Lodge celebrates Christmas at Back Yard Grill HOUSTON – Houston Lodge members celebrated Christmas on Dec. 9 at the Back Yard Grill.

Special guests were Board Chair Sandra Jones and husband Sam. Sandra spoke briefly and then presented membership pins.

Celebrating a December wedding anniversary were Darrell and Judy Muske who have been married 42 years.

Jason Falkenberg, Justin Falkenberg, Milton Fuchs, Lavina Patterson and Diane Weikel took home attendance prizes.

Past President Milton Fuchs had been in the hospital and is now in rehabilitation. He was able to attend the Christmas party and is slowly recovering.

Ellinger presents award to volunteer fire department ELLINGER – Ellinger Lodge will meet Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Ellinger Volunteer Fire Station.

The Christmas party was held Dec. 9 at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall.

Jerry Krenek, secretary/treasurer, welcomed those in attendance and introduced Elaine Koehl who gave the blessing before the meal.

Agent Judith Schulmeier introduced her daughter, Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier. Samantha spoke briefly and read the names of 70-year and 60-year membership pin recipients.

Bruce Kubena, a member of the Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department, accepted a check from the lodge in appreciation for the use of the fire station for meetings.

Braun Hall has a new sign that announces upcoming events. The hall is the home of Helotes Lodge.

Helotes will meet March 13 HELOTES – Braun Hall, the home of Helotes Lodge, has a new sign.

The hall is once again hosting dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month (schedule subject to change). The Countrymen will play the first weekend and Bimbo and Borderline will play the third weekend.

Plans are being made for a retro dance in April.

GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge celebrated Christmas at the December meeting by presenting the Humanitarian Award and electing officers.

Loretta Chilek received the Humanitarian Award in recognition of the time and hard work she put into the sale of the lodge’s hall and the volunteer work she did in the Giddings area this past year.

All of the 2017 officers will serve again in 2018 with one exception. Belle Delarosa is the new secretary.

A $100 donation was approved for the Giddings Juvenile Home. The money was used to buy Christmas presents for the residents.

Welcomed as a new member was Kobye Guerrero.

Julian Delarosa, Olivia Mize and Johnny Herzik won the $5 drawing. Johnny and Loretta took home the annual $50 awards.

Needville welcomes new members, elects officers NEEDVILLE – During a busy Dec. 3 meeting, Needville Lodge welcomed new members, elected officers and set the meeting schedule for 2018.

Boerne Lodge to meet Feb. 2 at Kronkosky Place BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Feb. 2, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Guest speaker will be Sally Sullivan from Frost Bank who will discuss identity theft.

Marilyn Vogt will begin the process of determining which high school members are eligible for the lodge’s scholarships this year.

Guest speakers were Johnathan D’Spain and Hamilton Tyler.

Johnathan is a freshman at the University of Notre Dame studying chemical engineering.

He talked about his experience at Hermann Sons Life Camp as a

young boy helped him to adjust quicker to life at a far away college with total strangers and a new environment.

Hamilton discussed what it was like attending six months of school in Germany and being totally immersed in the German culture. He did some traveling while he was in Germany and said he loved it. Hamilton is a senior this year at Texas A&M and will graduate with a degree in finance.

Members agreed to adopt the amended Local Lodge Bylaws and to donate $250 to the Kendall County Junior Livestock Show.

Applicants must have been a member in good standing of Vineta Lodge for five years.

Twenty hours of community service is required. The applicant may choose any two years of college during which to apply. The scholarship will be paid for the fall semester.

The lodge’s next regular meeting will be held Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.

The meal will be a surprise. A social gathering will be held Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m. starting with games and a surprise lunch.

Old Glory Lodge welcomes new member OLD FLORY – A good crowd attended the January meeting of Old Glory Lodge on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Welcomed as a new member was Adalynn Hunter Bly from White Oak. President Doug Vahlenkamp installed the 2018 officers including Keith Corzine, vice president; Diane Smith, secretary; Verlene Corzine, treasurer; Terry Letz,

The trustees reported that work would be done on the well as soon as possible.

Celebrating January birthdays were Justin Corzine and Jacy Corzine. “Happy Birthday” was

sung to Justin since his birthday was that day.

Following the meeting the group enjoyed games and a meal of hot soup and desserts including a freezer of homemade ice cream made by Chub Richards.

Dallas Lodge plans next gathering for March 25 DALLAS – Dallas Lodge’s next gathering will be held March 25 at 1 p.m. at the Lodge Hall. All members are asked to plan to attend and support the lodge in 2018.

Welcomed as new members at the Dec. 17 meeting were Nicodemus Swayne; Linda Schellenberg, wife of Steve Schellenberg; John F. Schellenberg and Cindy Seaton, the children of Linda and Steve Schellenberg; and Julie Harper, daughter of Andy Schellenberg.

John, Cindy and Julie are now fourth generation members.

The lodge met its new member goal for 17. The goal was five and the lodge added eight new mem-

bers during the year along with four members who transferred into the lodge.

Members approved a donation to the hospitalization fund for the 16-month-old son of Kelly and Steve Miller.

Members of the lodge participated in the Columbia Lodge Christmas toy drive. Dallas Lodge donated toys and five bicycles.

The Humanitarian Award was presented to Clint Holmes. Clint has served the lodge as vice president, financial trustee and communications coordinator. He served as secretary of the Home Association. He was a hall volun-

teer including serving as a bartender, making repairs and helping with events. On Join Hands Day he volunteered with other lodge members at the North Texas Food Bank. He is the son of Terri and Fred Holmes.

Guests included Board Chair Sandra Jones and husband Sam. Members were also glad to see Sharon and Sandy Smith.

Clint and Terri Holmes provided the meal. Thanks go to them and the others who helped set up tables and chairs and decorations.

Plum Lodge presents award during Christmas party PLUM – Plum Lodge members, family and guests met at the Prairie Valley Schoolhouse on Dec. 2 for the annual Christmas party and presentation of the 2017 Humanitarian Award.

The award was presented to Jo Lene Hughes. She is a loving, caring person who drives ill friends and neighbors to their out-oftown doctor’s appointments. She and her husband are members of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she serves on the Altar Guild, is an usher and greeter, belongs to the Wednesday morning Bible study group and decorates the fellowship hall for church parties, all bulletin boards and the church itself for special occasions. She is captain of a team that makes calls, prepares food and assists with serving at funeral lunches.

Columbia Lodge plans spaghetti dinner for March 24 DALLAS – Happy New Year to friends and family from Columbia Lodge.

The New Year blew into Dallas on a cold front and, just like the Cowboys, the lodge is hurting with several injuries sidelining the team this season. Jean Ernst has been in the hospital and a pacemaker was installed. That is why Jean was absent from the January meeting.

Doug Caudill went swimming in late December and surfaced with a hurt foot. He won’t be driving for a few months, but

that doesn’t mean he won’t be in action for the picnic in June.

Mike Sheffield continues to make progress with hip replacements and will be on the dance floor soon.

Pat Avery is undergoing home treatments and is watching Kentucky basketball just to keep in voice and form.

At the January meeting, officers were installed and the yearly schedule was laid out. There will be a posting of this year’s schedule as soon as the board meets.

Suffice it to say that the lodge has lots of activities that should keep members entertained and busy if they have time to volunteer and are interested in the lodge’s activities and projects.

There is a lot of enthusiasm and renewed commitment to making the lodge a viable and benevolent part of the world.

Several activities include fundraising for the lodge, outreach to the community and fun for all.

The first fund-raiser of the year will be a spaghetti dinner on

March 24. It is hoped that 100plus members show up for this event.

And if that doesn’t fill you up the umpteenth St. Alphonso Pancake Breakfast might put you over the edge in April.

Volunteers are needed to help with these events.

There were 25 people who attended the January meeting.

Let’s keep the numbers up at these meetings.

The next one is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m. This is the annual lodge chili cook-off

date, and although the Super Bowl won’t have the Cowboys on the playing field, many of the lodge’s own cowboys will make chili. Remember, no beans allowed!

This is always a fun event and the winner gets a subsidy to help with costs to enter and represent the lodge at the Retirement Home Chili Cook-off in March in Comfort. Columbia Lodge is always loud and proud and well known for its revelry at this annual event.

DaCOSTA – DaCosta Lodge will meet Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m.

The lodge’s 2017 Humanitarian Award was presented to Melissa Parks.

Melissa has been a member her entire life. She attended Hermann Sons Life Camp and was a dancer for 15 years. She was a member of the Da Costa Lodge Youth Chapter and served in various offices over the years.

Currently she is the Parents’ Club president for the Da Costa School of Dance and is active in Boy and Girl Scouts. Melissa is married to John Parks III and they have two children, Dylan and Cheyann.

The lodge recently made its annual donations to Christ’s Kitchen, Victoria County Senior Citizens Association, Salvation Army, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bloomington and the Da Costa School of Dance.

Bexar Lodge holds ‘best dessert’ contest at party SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge will meet Feb. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the North West Dancers Studio in front of John Marshall High School.

The lodge’s Christmas party was held Dec. 2 at the Paul Vogt Lodge Hall. The turnout was good and everyone enjoyed the chicken and sausage meal from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit. Members provided the desserts.

A contest for the best dessert was held with Lisa Rozacky being declared the winner.

Cheyenne Stoddard was the winner of the ugly sweater contest. Peter Flores finished in second place and Frances Neil finished in third.

The children received gifts from Santa. They played games and made crafts of bubble gum machine ornaments and decorated Rice Krispy treats.

The adults also had fun playing games.

CORPUS CHRISITI – Corpus Christi Lodge has three upcoming events. A covered dish supper and game night will be held Feb. 5 at Hilltop Community Center. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m.

A party also will be held Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at Railroad Seafood Station on North Chaparral Street in downtown Corpus.

An Easter party is planned for March 24. Details to follow.

A business dinner was held Jan. 9 at Nolan’s Steakhouse in Calallen.

Louise Schuetze to meet Feb. 12 - wear red!

Louise Schuetze Lodge Secretary Jo Ann Massengale, left, and President Janice Schwab celebrated the beginning of a new year at the lodge’s first meeting on Monday, Jan. 8. Everyone enjoyed the tortilla soup provided by the lodge. Vince Schwab won the split-the-pot prize. The next meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 12. The theme will be Valentine’s Day so wear red! The lodge will provide soup and sandwiches.

Dunlay hosts Christmas party Dunlay Lodge held its Christmas party Dec. 19 with members and guests enjoying a meal of tamales, chili (prepared by Kathi Muennink), beans and rice furnished by the lodge. The lodge hall was decorated with Christmas themed items. After the meal, members enjoyed socializing and then taking part in a “White Elephant” gift swap.

Comfort to host Valentine, youth party COMFORT – Comfort Lodge will meet again on Feb. 12. The social will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall in Comfort. The meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will follow.

The meeting will include the annual Valentine and Youth Party.

All junior members in the area are encouraged to attend. Crafts and games will be available for all ages and a fried chicken meal will be provided.

In addition, Comfort Lodge will be giving away a full campership to a junior member who is eligible for Camp who attends the meeting with a parent or guardian.

Information also will be available for members about applying for a half-campership.

Members were treated to chili and tamales at the January meeting.

President Connie Spenrath installed the 2018 officers.

Members were informed that the lodge had met its new member goal for 2017.

Members approved the amended Local Lodge Bylaws.

One member, May Thim, was celebrating a January birthday.

There was discussion regarding the upcoming golf tournament that will support the Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp. The tournament will be held on Saturday, March 24, at the Buckhorn in Comfort. More information regarding registering for the tournament can be found

In addition to the golf tournament, a prize drawing will be held and there will be chance to win a $250 gift card in the golf ball drop. Prize drawing tickets and golf ball drop tickets will be available for members at the February meeting. All monies collected will go directly to supporting the attendance of campers to the Grief Session that will be held July 8-11 in Comfort at Hermann Sons Life Camp.

Austin holds installation of 2018 officers AUSTIN – Austin Lodge will meet Sunday, Feb. 4. Members are asked to bring Super Bowl food (finger foods) and desserts.

The 2018 officers were installed at the Jan. 7 meeting.

The Cheer Committee reported mailing get-well cards to Edna Weigelt and Howard Anderson.

Members received copies of the amended Local Lodge Bylaws and were asked to read them before a vote to adopt them is taken at the February meeting.

Also, at the February meeting the 2018 agenda will be discussed.

Rosenberg-Richmond donates to Fort Bend Meals on Wheels Rosenberg-Richmond Lodge President Calvin Lamensky presents a check for $300 to Director Leah Halley from the Fort Bend County Meals on Wheels program. A $300 check also was delivered to Helping Hands. The donations were made in December.

Shelby will meet Feb. 11 at volunteer fire department SHELBY – The Feb. 11 meeting of Shelby Lodge will be held in the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department Meeting Room beginning at 4:30 p.m. with social time. Cat Spring Lodge will install officers on March 8

CAT SPRING – Cat Spring Lodge will meet March 8 at 6:30 p.m. Officers will be installed and a potluck meal will be served.

The lodge held its annual Christmas and awards party on Dec. 16. A turkey and dressing meal was provided. Members brought side dishes and desserts.

The Meals on Wheels program in Sealy was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award.

Volunteer Loyce Pacher accepted the award. The lodge donated $50 to the program.

Members also made individual donations. The donations totaled more than $200.

Meals on Wheels has 100 volunteers and serves 93 people throughout Austin County.

A discussion was held about the lodge’s community service

projects and several suggestions were made.

Several members were ill and unable to attend the meeting including Maria Pieske, Anna Marie Schaffer and Hanne Halter. Morris Nordland is doing well after his successful surgery.

Dillon Shaw was the only member present celebrating a January birthday.
