President’s Message

Imagine the possibilities I have always loved history and tradition. That’s one of the reasons why I am so proud of my membership in Hermann Sons. Ours is an organization steeped in history and traditions. History was meant to be shared and traditions to be passed on, but these things are meaningless without future possibilities. This month I was reminded of the many possibilities for Hermann Sons’ future as I traveled the state installing officers at local ceremonies. Corpus Christi is a proud lodge with proud members. Nowhere does that pride shine brighter than in the Hunt family. On the day I was there, four generations, making up more than a dozen members, gathered together celebrating all that is good in their family and in Hermann Sons. This is one of the greatest ways that our future is solidified – traditions of

membership passed through a family. And not just on paper, but through active participation in lodge gatherings and in programs like camp and dance. The memories of family and community will be meaningful so that children keep their membership and pass on the traditions to their children. My travels later took me to Cuero where I talked with Haley, a graduating high school senior. She and her parents talked about how she is ready to start

out on that next adventure in life. I reminded her to apply for all the scholarships available from our camp, retirement home and her local lodge. Graduation is a prime example of a time filled with future possibilities. Scholarships offered through Hermann Sons are a demonstration of our commitment to strengthening the communities where our young members will one day live and work and to their endless possibilities to make a positive impact on our organization. This past weekend my wife Elizabeth and I were in east Texas visiting with members from Dogwood Trail and Piney Woods lodges. During my remarks to those gathered, Elizabeth asked Kallen, a young Hermann Sons camper we had met earlier, if he would like to share his summer camp experiences. Reluctant at first, he talked about his favorite

activities. But as he spoke and his courage grew he became more descriptive of the excitement of camp and his desire to return as a counselor in the future. Meaningful experiences as children promote meaningful experiences as adults. As I share conversation or listen to stories during my travels I can’t help but think that all of our members’ lives are enriched through their association with Hermann Sons and how they equally enrich our organization. Because of our rich traditions and history, we are poised for exciting possibilities - possibilities of growing our community of members and of making our organization stronger. Together, we are able to create an abundance of possibilities for a strong and prosperous future. – Buddy Preuss Grand President/CEO

Lodges reminded to submit delegate information Our organization revolves around a lodge system that offers meetings, community service activities and the enrichment of family life. All of us can be recruiters and share our story with the many people we come in contact with daily. Good luck to all our lodges this year in the promotion of increased membership. INSTALLATIONS All of the installation of officer ceremonies have taken place. We appreciate the lodges that hosted these events. A special thank you goes to those officers who took an oath of office and agreed to serve as an officer for their lodge. The Grand Lodge officers are here to help you carry out your duties. We encourage the officers who received a lodge planner at the installation to use this informational book throughout the year. It includes valuable tools that will promote success in your lodge. 47th GRAND LODGE CONVENTION The 47th Grand Lodge Convention is coming up on May

1-3 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Marcos. Qualified lodges must return the delegate form sent to the lodge financial secretary. The Home Office needs this information so it can complete Convention planning. Convention delegates participate in the business and committee sessions during the day and enjoy social activities in the evening. The Convention format will be somewhat different from past years with a newcomer orientation, some educational segments and the delegate’s choice of which committee meetings to attend. All events and sessions will be held at the hotel during the three-day Convention. The Convention registration fee is $50 per delegate and $100 per guest. These fees include breakfasts, one lunch and social functions in the evening that include a meal. The delegates’ hotel lodging is paid for by the Home Office through a master bill and the delegates receive mileage reimbursement to and from the lodge city represented as well as $50 per day for each of the three days.

Information will be sent to delegates regarding room reservations and Convention registration shortly. FUTURE EVENTS March 11 is the date for the annual Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Retirement Home and benefitting its scholarship fund. This is an excellent time to gather lodge members for a little competition and fellowship. Several lodges also offer scholarships for their junior members. Other lodge and organizational events are posted on the calendar located in this issue and on the website – hermannsonslife.org. More waves of new members needed in 2017 By TIM KOLBE Grand Vice President-Marketing This past summer my wife and I spent a couple of days at the coast. Of course, a visit to the beach was a must. I still like to wade in and do battle with the waves, as do most children who delight with their first experience with the ocean. Just as much, we enjoy sitting in our beach chairs watching and listening to the endless procession of waves crashing on to the beach. I find it a calming, hypnotic experience of sight and sound. I understand that the wind causes wave action by creating friction between the air and water molecules. But I digress, because while sitting in my beach chair, I was not thinking about oceanography science, but was daydreaming that every wave coming ashore was a new Hermann Sons member wanting to join our organization.

Sitting there gazing out into the Gulf, I imagined that I had to add at least 100 new agents to keep up with the demand! I knew I wanted to share this with our readers, and now seemed like the right time, in this new year of opportunities. Hermann Sons has a long history and strong heritage in Texas. This heritage must continue to be a force to grow stronger, so we may carry out the mission of protecting Texas families while supporting Texas communities. With our life insurance and annuity products and our member community outreach programs, “We Strengthen Community” through financial protection and service. Our agents are working diligently to bring on new members but we need your help too. In fact, if it were not for our current members talking about our great organization and its benefits, we would be

Five earn $100 gift cards SAN ANTONIO – Five members have each received a $100 gift card as part of the “Continue the Tradition – Protect the Ones You Love” Membership Campaign that ended on Dec. 31. They are Jacelyn Delaney of Biry Lodge, Allyne Chapman of Moulton Lodge, Laura Comiskey of Cuero Family Lodge, Randolph Pfullmann of Jourdanton Lodge and Kathleen Ann Reile of Bandera County Lodge. The names of all of the members who recommended a new member from July 1-Dec. 31

where placed in a jar and five names were drawn. The recommender campaign has been restructured for 2017. This year a name will be drawn every month and that person will win a $100 gift card. That means there will be 12 winners in 2016 instead of 10. Recommending is easy. Go to the website – hermannsonslife. org – and go to the bottom of the Home page and click on “Recommend a Member.” Or call the Marketing Department at 210-527-9113 or 877-437-6266.

Ten recommenders recognized The Team of Outstanding Prospectors Campaign recognized 10 more TOP Recommenders for the month of December 2016. This brings the total to 573 members recommending 742 new members to Hermann Sons in 2016. Congratulations to the following December recommenders: Recommender Agent Jason Matthew Ballman, Montgomery Gary Falkenberg Candyce Lynn Holmes, Stern Annette Roecker Allyson Claire Kovar, Giddings Loretta Chilek Susan S. at a disadvantage. You are our greatest asset! Members can always recommend new prospects to our organization by way of referral to your area agents, on our website or by phoning in a lead for assignment. We offer a recommender drawing for each month of the year. The more folks you recommend, the more chances you have to win. Lodges also can play a part in bringing new members into our organization. At lodge officer installations we spoke about new member appreciation events where lodges can invite new members to come and learn more about our great organization. Why not invite them to bring a guest with them? Be sure and request an agent attend to visit with prospective members about our products. If your lodge hosts a community service event, gather contact information

and have an agent attend. Agents will be glad to set up a table at a health fair, blood drive or summer picnic. All agents have access to our new illustration software that has some very useful tools to engage prospective members about the need for insurance protection, several of which are a quick quote function, life expectancy and life insurance needs calculators. Congratulations to lodges that met their membership goals in 2016, especially those that experienced an overall growth in membership. Lodge will be notified about their new member goals for 2017 in the near future. Hermann Sons members and lodges are the drivers of our success. You essentially are the winds of our ocean, driving new members to our shores…. much like the waves of my daydream. Keep those waves rolling in.

Medical Notes Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically. Types of immunotherapy Certain cancers respond better to immunotherapy than others. Also, different types of immunotherapy may be more effective than others. The following are some of the types of treatment doctors may prescribe. • Monoclonal antibodies:

These are drugs that are designed to bind to specific targets in the body. They can cause an immune response that destroys cancer cells. Other monoclonal antibodies (targeted therapy) mark cancer cells so that the immune system can seek and destroy them. • Adoptive cell transfer: The National Cancer Institute says adoptive cell transfer attempts to boost the natural ability of T cells to fight cancer. T cells are a type of white blood cell and part of

the immune system. • Immune checkpoint inhibitors: These drugs basically rev up the immune system, which helps it recognize and attack cancer cells. • Cytokines: These proteins are made by the body’s cells and play important roles in the body’s normal immune responses. They also influence the immune system’s ability to respond to cancer. The two main types of cytokines used to treat cancer are interferons and interleukins.

A cancer diagnosis can be devastating to individuals and their families. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, patients may not know what lies ahead, including their prognosis for survival. Battling cancer may not be easy, but cancer researchers continue to look for ways to attack cancer cells and improve the prognosis for men and women diagnosed with the disease. In the United States, cancer death rates have been on the decline since the early 1990s. Numerous

factors, including immunotherapy, are contributing to those lower death rates. Understanding immunotherapy can help cancer patients and their families gain a better grasp on treatment. What is immunotherapy? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society.

Fort Worth will meet March 5 FORT WORTH – Let it snow let it snow. Fort Worth received some snow in early January. Texas weather is a day-to-day thing. Enjoyed a program on TV this week on public television called “Postcards from Fort Worth.” It was about Fort Worth from early 1900 to 1960. What a wonderful feeling it was when they started taking about groups that settled in the Fort Worth area and one of those groups was the Sons of Hermann. They included a picture of a group and in the back was a man dressed as Hermann the Defender. The program talked about the group’s meetings and dances and its love of beer. It was a great program and made this reporter so proud to hear Hermann Sons mentioned with

the likes of the Colonial Open, Panther Hall, Cats baseball and other events in Fort Worth. The next meeting of Fort Worth Lodge will be Sunday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at Westcreek Lanes. Members are encouraged to attend and bring with them ideas for Join Hands Day projects. Contact an officer if you have a child in school and they are part of an organization that would like to partner with the lodge on a project. Plans for the June picnic also will be discussed along with ways to bring in more new members and getting members more involved in the lodge’s activities. Junior members are reminded that the Youth Committee is once again offering scholarships

to attend Hermann Sons-Camp in Comfort. Send a postcard or letter to Ronnie Jones telling him why you want to go to Camp. His address is 11704 Frazier Lane, Crowley, 76035. Two scholarships will be awarded for this summer. Get well wishes go to Ernest “Red” Kelly who has been in the hospital. And keep Linda Balmos in your prayers as she goes through some tough times.
