More than $20,000 was donated. President’s Message Lodges demonstrate community spirit Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I love it most for many reasons. It is a time when families gather together to share a special kinship (usually over a table full of food). It is the sharing of gifts; and not just the kind with bright bows that the children love to open but the greatest gifts of love and the sharing of special traditions. It is the time when we reflect on the past year and all that made it wonderful.

It is also for all of these reasons I love Hermann Sons Life.

Throughout the year, but especially during the holidays, lodges gather together to share the kinship of their Hermann Sons Life family. Generations of members share the traditions

of the past and create new traditions together. And as I look back at this past year I am reminded that sharing and giving were at the forefront of what we did.

Lodges have always come together to support their communities. You can’t pick up an issue of our newspaper without

reading about another fundraiser or donation to a volunteer fire department, food bank or other community needs.

This year lodges and members also supported several Home Office initiatives.

In July we hosted our first Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp. The generous donations of lodges, members and business associates made it possible for 40 children to receive specialized assistance in a healing atmosphere.

In August, Hermann Sons Life lodges and members responded in a big way when Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas coast.

More than $20,000 was raised to help with recovery efforts.

Children’s Grief Awareness Day Thursday, Nov. 16, was Children’s Grief Awareness Day. The Home Office staff demonstrated its support by wearing blue. Children’s Grief Awareness Day is designed to help everyone become more aware of the needs of grieving children – and of the benefits they obtain through the support of others. Children’s Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need.

Why Camp is the best gift you can give a child

By Katie Miller executive Camp Director We have officially entered my favorite time outside of the Camp season . . . Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! I have always loved this time of year because I am surrounded by my family and loved ones.

I also love all of the traditions associated with this time of year.

One of my absolute favorite traditions is setting up the Christmas tree and reminiscing about all of the ornaments as they are put on the tree. This year I am looking forward to creating new traditions with my husband as well since we just got married in March.

In addition to traditions, gift giving is one of my favorite things about the holidays. Just to see others smile when they have been thought about makes my heart extremely happy.

In my opinion, one of the best

gifts you can ever give a child is the opportunity for them to attend Hermann Sons Life Camp.

Yes, Camp is lots of fun, but there is so much more that your child or loved one will gain from their session. Here are some of the reasons why Camp is the best gift you could ever give.

Children learn responsibility.

One of my many responsibilities as executive camp director is interviewing potential staff members throughout the fall and spring to see if they will be a good fit for Camp.

During the interview, I typically ask if they have had any prior experiences at Hermann Sons Life Camp or with another camp.

When I ask them what the best lesson is that they have learned from camp, responsibility almost always is a part of their answer.

For many of our campers, their session at Camp might be their first time away from home for

an extended period of time that is not with family members or a close friend.

While at Camp there are so many opportunities for campers to learn about responsibility and have an opportunity to practice that skill. Each morning after breakfast everyone returns to their cabin to “Clean for Ice Cream” and each individual is responsible for a job in the cabin to help their cabin mates. Everyone also makes their own beds each day.

I personally believe it is wonderful for children to have an opportunity to be responsible outside of school and home.

Children learn to be inclusive.

In today’s society it seems like every single time that you turn on the TV or look on the Internet they are reporting something horrible involving children.

One of my favorite things about Hermann Sons Life Camp

is that we have campers who come from all over the state (and even some from other states and countries) and from different backgrounds. Our campers are able to learn about other cultures and how to be inclusive in a safe and welcoming environment.

For some children Camp may be the only place they feel like they can be themselves and for that I am so grateful. During staff development each summer we talk a lot about creating a welcoming and accepting environment for our campers each and every session. Campers and staff members are then able to take these skills back to their hometowns and schools and help others learn about them as well.

Children learn that it’s okay to make mistakes.

Unfortunately there is a lot of pressure to be “perfect” in today’s society that our children

are growing up in. One of the best things we can do is teach children the importance of making mistakes and learning from them. Camp provides individuals with an opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment that helps them become resilient and bounce back from them.

Mistakes are a part of life, but if children learn what the next step is after them they are often able to be more successful in general.

These are just a few reasons why Camp is an amazing gift that you could give your child or grandchild. Sometimes during the holidays it’s hard because there is so much focus on tangible gifts, but often those that can’t be touched are some of the best. Camp is a gift that your child or grandchild will remember and use for the rest of their life. I know when I have children one day that Camp will definitely be a gift that I give to them.

Fund established to help Sutherland Springs SAN ANTONIO – The Home Office has established the Sutherland Springs Baptist Church Memorial Fund and will be accepting donations until the end of the year .

At that time, all of the donations including one from the Home Office, will be forwarded directly to the church .

It has been confirmed that one Hermann Sons Life member died in the tragedy that occurred at the church on Sunday, Nov . 5 .

Another member was wounded and remains in the hospital .

Christmas is a time of giving and good cheer

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing There’s a radio station here in San Antonio, the Cradle of Texas Liberty, which began playing 24-hour Christmas music in mid-November. I tuned in and heard the very first song they played. It didn’t sound very Christmassy (yes, it’s a word) but I figure that they were trying to ease us into the holiday spirit by playing songs which referred to the season in a subtle way.

I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m amazed how much sooner we start the season every year. Not the true reason for Christmas, but the commercial reason. It’s in your face, everywhere, all the time, can’t get away from it, blatant retail madness. Anyone sporting a black-eye from Black Fri-

day shopping? Ding…. Round Two, now get in there champ and come out swinging! Not for me. I’m going hunting, and not for bargains.

Thank goodness we at Hermann Sons Life don’t have to resort to that kind of high energy sales tactics. But we do have seasons which drive our business.

The busiest sales periods are Dance and Camp seasons. Our members help with word of mouth personal referrals about our great family protection and added benefits. Those referrals turn into sales leads, which are assigned to our sales force.

It’s up to our agents to help our clients understand the true value of insurance and why it’s so important to buy it for longterm protection, i.e. lifetime

members. Simply put, lifetime members are vital to the success and growth of Hermann Sons Life.

what they felt was an excessive premium due to a poor health rating.

A past member, I looked up the client in our database. I found a previous term certificate which lapsed because the client felt they no longer needed the insurance, and so quit paying for it.

Now the client was trying to buy life insurance at an older age when his health was poor.

The old German saying goes, “Too soon we get old, and too smart, late!”

Second story is about an agent who recently was working with a family for their future financial protection.

A full discussion ensued of Herman Sons Life benefits and how our organization has protected Texas families for gen-

erations. A thorough needs analysis on the couple resulted in a blend of whole and term life for the adults, plus whole life certificates for each child. Four family members led to six certificates and a 100% Hermann Sons Family.

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund donations presented

Central Texas Food Bank in Austin serves 21 counties in the heart of Central Texas. SIEMERING – Siemering Lodge members attended the meeting of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department on Monday, Oct. 30, where they presented a large amount of hand-sized stuffed animals and dolls that can be used to calm traumatized children. VINETA – Vineta Lodge members donated books that will be sent to an orphanage for girls in Honduras.

Medical Notes Smokers have scores of reasons to give up the habit. In addition to contributing to cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and other lung ailments, cancers elsewhere in the body, wrinkled skin and diseases of the eyes, nose and mouth, smoking may also contribute to cognitive decline.

There’s growing evidence suggesting that using cigarettes can affect the brain in negative ways, including causing cognitive decline as early as age 45.

According to the study “Impact of Smoking on Cognitive Decline in Early Old Age,” led by Severine Sabia, as published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, smoking is a possible risk factor for dementia, although the impact smoking has on the brain may have been underestimated in elderly populations because

of the general shorter life span of smokers.

Study participants were given a battery of tests in memory, vocabulary and executive function that included reasoning and fluency, and a global cognitive score. Both men and women participated (5,099 men and 2,137 women, with a mean age of 56), and smoking history was recorded over the 10-year assessment period. An analysis revealed that a cognitive decline occurred in all tests except vocabulary among all participants, but mostly in men. However, faster cognitive decline was observed among current smokers compared with those who had never smoked.

The size of the effect associated with smoking was similar to that of 10 years of aging.

Findings are similar to other re-

search being done on the topic of smoking and its impact on the brain. The Alzheimer’s Society states that smoking is bad for the heart, lungs and vascular system – including the blood vessels that feed oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Recent research has shown that smoking is a significant risk factor for vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, with smokers twice as likely to develop the disease as nonsmokers.

The Mayo Clinic defines vascular dementia as problems with reasoning, planning, judgment, memory and other thought processes caused by brain damage from impaired blood flow to the brain. Factors that increase the risk for vascular dementia are See MEDICAL, Pg. 11

Dementia can be brought on by stroke, whether it’s a large stroke or a series of mini-strokes.

WebMD says vascular dementia can occur over time as “silent”

strokes build up – something that seems to occur more readily in smokers and those with cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of cognitive decline that may result from smoking and vascular dementia can include:

• delusions or hallucinations • inappropriate emotions • impaired coordination or balance More research is needed with regard to the association between smoking and cognitive decline related to dementia. If

research continues to prove a correlation, greater warning may be issued about smoking and its effect on parts of the body beyond the heart and lungs. Even at this early junction, current research suggests yet another reason to quit lighting up.

GOLIAD - Haylee Johnson tied the translucent white ribbon on her sleek black tap shoes, jumped up with a click, rearranged her gleaming purple bat wings and found her place on the dance floor.

“My favorite is tap,” said Haylee, 6. “I like the sound they make.”

Before the song “Happy Tappin’ with Elmo” began in the Hermann Sons Life Goliad School of Dance classroom, Haylee lifted a finger to the hearing aid in her left ear, then the right ear.

“She is a creative soul; she is headstrong,” said McQueary of Goliad. “She’ll need that with this.”

McQueary, a registered

nurse who specializes in children with special needs and early childhood intervention, began a GoFundMe page called “Help for Haylee” to get her Haylee the educational assistance she needs.

Haylee suffered an intrauterine stroke while McQueary was pregnant.

When her daughter failed newborn hearing screenings at five months, McQueary worried.

At about 6 months, Haylee was first diagnosed with bilateral dilated vestibular aqueduct syndrome. When she turned 3, Haylee’s family learned the hearing loss was caused by the stroke.

“About 5 to 10 percent of the world has it,” McQueary said doctors told her.

Haylee wears hearing aids in both ears as a result. Her moderate to severe permanent hearing loss in both ears could continue to progress.

“She could wake up tomor-

row deaf,” McQueary said, explaining the unknown. “It could be years from now when she’s having her first child or on her wedding day.”

After an in-school assessment, she learned her daughter was behind in phonics and had difficulty distinguishing sounds.

Haylee is a first-grader at Goliad Elementary School, where she receives speech therapy and deaf education services.

With her diagnosis, she has difficulty hearing and producing sounds. Learning reading, rhyming, letters and numbers is strenuous.

McQueary said she gives her daughter positive reassurances throughout her struggles.

“She gets down on herself,” she said. “She makes flashcards herself and practices.”

To help Haylee catch up with her peers, McQueary plans to enroll her in the Sylvan Learning Center in Victoria.

However, the price of tuition is costly at $45 per hour, she said.

About 129 hours of extra instruction will get her to the level she needs to be, McQueary said.

“I’m a mommy who works full-time by herself,” she said.

“I just want to help my kid and provide in the best way possible given the situation.”

A benefit barbecue plate sale and prize drawing will be held Feb. 10 beginning at 11 a.m. at the St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 1286 Church Road, Weesatche. Serving begins at 12 noon. Resident Vernell Homilius collected donations of Halloween candy from some residents. Her grandson, Justin Tinney, coordinated the distribution of the candy to the children of Comfort at Starlite Cinema on Oct. 31.

Fort Worth will elect officers at Dec. 3 meeting FOR WORTH – Tragedy has been happening all around the state this year. Hermann Sons Life has been Hermann Sons Strong in lending a helping hand. Seeing our organization and the things it is doing on television, on Facebook and on the website makes me very proud to be a member of this great organization. Plan to attend a lodge meeting and get the full story of what we are doing.

Happy Turkey Day!! I sometimes think you should say Happy Football Day, as that is the way a lot of families spend their day – watching all the games.

Some spend time outside, weather permitting. No matter how you spent your day, hope it was full of family and friends.

Fort Worth Lodge will meet on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m. at Sammy’s in Burleson. There will be a short meeting, the election of officers and dinner provided by the lodge.

The lodge has reached its new member goal for 2017 but there is still time to add more new members. Remember if you recommend a new member you are eligible to win a $100 gift card.

The best reason for recommending is to grow the lodge, grow the organization and give that member the peace of mind that their family is protected in case something happens.

Kudos go to Bradley Whitley.

Bradley has been busy his freshman year of high school. He has continued his football career playing defense as a starting middle linebacker for the Crowley Eagles. His father, Fred, said, “Brad plays defense using his motto ‘Be the hammer not the nail.’” Bradley is also a part of the high school’s JROTC program.

His testing and knowledge of the military has decorated him as Staff Sergeant and 1st Squad leader. Bradley plans a future career in either the Coast Guard or

Marines. Congrats to Bradley on his accomplishments so far this year. Bradley is the son of Fred and Paula Whitley.

The Youth Committee is working on ideas for the youth from the lodge who attend Hermann Sons Life Camp each year.

Campers and parents should be looking for a letter from the committee in January about the new project. There also will be a postcard to return. Thanks go to Ronnie Jones and Robert Balmos who work each year on this committee.

Several members reached milestones in November. The 50-year members are Juanita Henslee, Norman Kneschk and Joyce Reusch, who all joined on Nov. 5, 1967. On Nov. 6, 1967, Michael McCarthy and William

Columbia to hold annual steak dinner

El Campo will meet Dec. 1

DALLAS – Thanksgiving greetings from Columbia Lodge.

Columbia Lodge elected its 2018 officers at the November meeting, which was attended by more than 50 members.

Thanks go to all who came out and voted. Hope they will return again and again.

The new officers include Allen Hare, president; Dave Moynihan, vice president; Stanley Whitehead, secretary-treasurer, and Cecilia Phillips, Finance Committee member. Those elected to the Home Association include a three-year trustee position for Mark Martinek, and one-year terms for Jeff Ferrand, David Pippin and Gilbert Shelby.

Thanks go to those who have served the lodge and to those who are headed into office in January.

Several new members were welcomed and Agent Helen Tyson Brown reports that several new applications are in the works.

If you know somebody who is looking for insurance, contact her and she will gladly get them signed up.

EL CAMPO – El Campo Lodge will meet Friday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Phoenix restaurant. Members may bring a door prize to be given away at the end of the meeting.

Members and guests gathered Thursday, Oct. 19, for the annual scholarship drawing.

Vice President Donald Wigginton, assisted by 10-year-old Robert Anderson, 11-year-old Landen Witcher and 8-year-old Cayden Witcher, started the ticket drawing.

Telicia Anderson, Amy Witcher and Cindy Witcher recorded the winners of each prize as the tickets were drawn.

Local businesses as well as lodge members donated 35 prizes. The lodge greatly appreciates the support of the donors and those who purchased tickets.

The funds raised from ticket sales are used to award scholarships to graduating seniors. The students earn their scholarships by selling tickets.

A great meal was served after the meeting. Thanks go to all who made side dishes to go with the turkey and ham. Bobby and Juliea Wilbanks as usual provided the meats and everybody chipped in to make this a fantastic meal. That is the way it is supposed to be done.

The next meeting will be held Sunday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m., as there is a Christmas Bazaar at the Hall on the first Sunday. This will be the annual steak dinner and all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Hall’s Christmas party is to be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Hall. Details are forthcoming but the event usually gets going about 6:30 in the evening.

An effort is under way to gather email addresses for all lodge members to keep them informed about events at the Hall. The collection of email addresses will begin soon.

The Home Association will embark on a new journey next year, hoping to create standard hours of operation and to provide an up-to-date calendar of

events at the Hall. The new POS system is helping in the effort to upgrade services and provide accountability for inventory and day-to-day operations of the Hall. The hope is that some of these changes will make the Hall’s business model a model of success. Patience is needed with the changes, as they will benefit all.

More volunteers are needed to help with a clothing drive, a book drive and to feed the Church Kids a couple of Sundays a year not to mention other lodge events that will happen throughout the year. Your volunteering will make a difference. And input is needed on what the lodge should be doing to make it a more active part of the community.

The holidays are always a busy time. All members are welcome at the Hall for all the activities.

Plan to attend your lodge meetings. Members also are welcome at the Home Association meetings, which are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Hall at 7 p.m.

Donald Wigginton started the lodge’s scholarship program 20 years ago. He has served the lodge for many years as a member, officer and agent.

Four generations of the Wigginton family including Donald’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were in attendance.

Warren Witcher, Landen Witcher and Ruby Wigginton were recognized for their September birthdays. Charles Harris celebrated his in October.

Pershing holiday party Dec. 6 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will celebrate Christmas on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Home Association Building Ballroom.

A traditional Christmas dinner will be catered. Members are asked to bring a dessert to complete the meal. Games will follow the meeting.

The lodge will be collecting items to be donated to St. P.J.’s Children’s Home. Items needed for the children include anything from pajamas to arts and crafts to headphones to blow dryers. Cibolo Lodge to meet Dec. 9 at Bexar Social Hall CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge will hold its December meeting and Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Bexar Social Hall, 15681 Bexar Bowling, Marion.

Tickets will be available until Dec. 1.

The cost of meals is $8 for members and $11 for guests. The meal will be bacon wrapped chicken, green beans, potatoes and salad.

Guadalupe County Commissioner Jim Wolverton was the guest speaker at the Nov. 2 meeting held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City.

He shared some interesting information. Did you know that Texas had 23 original municipalities and in 1850 they changed

them to counties? There are now 264 counties in Texas, and in 1846 Guadalupe County was born from Bexar County. To be a new county, there is a minimum size requirement of 714 square miles and the parent county has to remain at least 900 square miles in size.

Commissioner Wolverton updated everyone on many aspects of the expected growth of Guadalupe County, answered many questions and discussed new pavement techniques.

The lodge’s Make a Difference Day project was a huge success! Members Gail Gray and Casey Shepherd put together 92 goodie bags for the residents of Autumn Winds Living and Rehabilitation Center and New Haven Assisted Living Center.

Members met at Autumn Winds on Friday, Oct. 27, and went door to door to deliver the bags. The residents were receptive and enjoyed the contents of the bags. They were happy to see the two junior members who accompanied the others and the junior members enjoyed petting the cats. The remaining bags were taken to New Haven Assisted Living Center where Doris King accepted the goodies and

On Oct. 28 members went on the painted churches tour in Schulenburg. Members got to see all four of the churches.

The churches are beautiful and worth the trip. Special thanks go to President and CEO Buddy Preuss for his participation.

Ham was the entrée for the meal and there were lots of side dishes including corn, hash browns, deviled eggs, cranberry relish, sweet potato casserole and Casey Shepherd’s macaroni

and cheese which was voted the best side dish. Desserts included pineapple upside down cake, apple pie, snickerdoodle cookies, Andes mint chocolate chip cookies and Javion Campos’ cranberry coconut pecan cookie bars which were named the best dessert.

Attendance prizes went to Casey Shepherd and Nell Shepherd. The junior attendance prize winner was Michael Campos.

Holly Nicole Nefford’s name was drawn for the special prize but

she was not there to claim the cash.

Officers for 2018 were elected and will include John Gray, president; Sherry Rakowitz, vice president; Jonny Brown, trustee chairman; and Fay Fey, Finance Committee chairman. Bandera County Lodge welcomes six new juniors BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge will hold its annual Christmas party on Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bandera Middle School Cafetorium, 1005 Cherry St., Bandera. Members and Bandera County School of Dance students are invited to attend.

The dancers will give everyone a preview of what they have learned. The lodge will provide goody bags for the dancers. Santa will make a guest appearance. Cookies and punch will be served.

Stephanie Brown has announced that the dance recital is set for May and will be held at Bandera High School in Bandera.

The lodge welcomed six new junior members during the Nov. 12 meeting held at the

home of Gary and Kathleen Reile in Lakehills. They are Cameron Christian Chavoya, Grace Greer Garcia, Kaiya Brianne Phelps, Arthur Steven Phelps, Claire E. Eddleman and Gavin Gregory Garcia.

The lodge made a $200 donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund established by the Home Office. A note of thanks was received for the donation.

Members also approved a $200 donation to the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Central Texas to benefit the victims of the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church tragedy.

The lodge will again make charitable donations to various organizations in the Bandera/ Lakehills area.

Bexar Christmas party set for Dec. 2 SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge will host its annual Christmas party on Dec. 2 at 4 p.m. at the Paul Vogt Lodge Hall on Dietz Elkhorn Road off IH-10 West.

The lodge hosted a Halloween party Oct. 22 at MacArthur Park. Everyone had a great time.

There were games and prizes for the children and adults.

Prizes for the best children’s

costume were awarded to Jazlynn Metzger, Nicolas Metzger and Ryan Metzger and Leonor Garcia. Adult costume contest winners were Sherry Stoddard and Amanda Metzger. Lisa Rozacky won the prize for the best dessert.

The lodge met Nov. 5 and welcomed two new members, Ryan Metzger and Zoe Gomez.

Members voted to make donations to the HHV, the Retirement Home Christmas Fund and the USO. In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge donated stuffed animals to Seeing Eye Optical. Linda Wehmeyer, Joan Crider and Beverly Hutzler delivered them.

BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Dec. 1, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting.

The lodge met Nov. 3 and welcomed Clint and Kelsay Vogt and Sissy Tyler.

Clint and Kelsay were guest speakers. They are local residents of Boerne and own private beehives on their property.

They shared lots of interesting information about honeybees. They said that bees live in colonies that contain a queen, worker bees and drones. The worker bees and the queen bees are females but only the queen can reproduce. Drones are male bees and their only job is to mate with a queen.

A worker bee has many jobs such as cleaning the hive, collecting pollen and nectar to feed the colony and taking care of the queen and her offspring.

The queen’s only job inside the hive is to lay eggs, which is about 1,800 a day. Female honeybees are the only ones that sting and they die shortly after they sting.

Bees see all colors except red.

That and their sense of smell helps them to find the flowers and plants they need to collect pollen.

Honeybees produce honey from pollen and nectar from the plants they pollinate. They

store the honey in honeycombs, which they use to feed the colony during dry weather conditions, and in cold months when flowers are not available.

Depending on the weather, worker bees have to keep the hive cool or warm by fluttering their wings. Bee pollination is important both ecologically and commercially. One in three foods that we eat are directly or indirectly pollinated by honeybees. Bees also produce beeswax, royal jelly and propolis.

There has been a decline in bees over the years for many reasons including parasites, viruses, insecticides, pesticides and stress because of human activities that threaten their habitat.

Six new junior members were welcomed into the lodge. They are Harley and Hailey Hauter, Naomi Martinez, Brianne Kuyrkendall, Addison Donaldson and Emery Valenzuela. Kinsley and Riley Korczynski have transferred to Comfort Lodge.

Marilyn Vogt read a thank you card from the Home Office for the donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

Members voted to make a $100 donation to the “Hugs from Home” program.

Best wishes go to Bill Sultenfuss who celebrated his birthday on Nov.15.

At the end of the meeting, dessert was served and Jack Faecher won the game prize.

Siemering plans annual Christmas barge ride for Dec. 12 SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge will celebrate Christmas with its almost annual barge ride on the beautifully lit San Antonio River. This year the ride will be on one of the new electric powered barges operated

by GoRio. The date is Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Everyone is asked to meet at the Home Association Building at 5:30 p.m. and be prepared to board the barge at 5:45 p.m.

There are only 40 tickets available. Ana Vasquez will be in charge of distribution and can be contacted at 210-569-4660.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and under.

A tamale and chili supper will be served after the barge ride with members asked to bring desserts. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange you will need to bring a gift with a value of not more than $5

marked male or female and adult or child. Be sure to wear red or green.

In observance of Make A Difference Day, members attended the meeting of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department on Monday, Oct. 30, where they presented a large amount of hand-sized stuffed animals and dolls that can be used to calm traumatized children. One member made a substantial

cash donation.

Sally Hertzberg and Augusta Fite also provided a couple of cakes as refreshments for the volunteer meeting. These folks were very busy taking emergency calls before meeting with lodge representatives and had to cut the visit short to handle another call.

At the November gathering, the 2018 officers were elected and members celebrated

Thanksgiving.

Members provided the side dishes and desserts to go with the turkey and dressing.

Members wore fall colors. You may ask why this lodge places such an emphasis on the colors worn to gatherings. President Ana Vasquez came up with the idea and it provides a chance for extra Christmas gifts. Smart fun –don’t you think?

Harmonia to collect toys for Blue Santa program SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge will celebrate Christmas during the Dec. 8 meeting. The lodge will provide the ham.

Members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts.

Officers will be elected and members are asked to bring toys for donation to the Blue Santa Program of the San Antonio Police Officers Association.

Blue Santa is expected to be there to accept the gifts. Toys should be unwrapped and unopened. Monetary donations also will be accepted.

During the Nov 9 meeting, the lodge presented the proceeds from the Tee It Up For a Cause Golf Tournament held Sept. 30.

A check for $12,000 was presented to Camp Discovery and a check for $2,750 was presented The 100 Club of San Antonio.

Members also approved a $100 donation to theSutherland Springs Baptist Church Fund established by the Home Office.

Camp Discovery is a camp for children with cancer. The 100 Club of San Antonio supports the families of law enforcement and fire department personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The lodge held its Oktoberfest celebration at the October meeting. Jake White, Albert Ranzau and John Hoog prepared the sausage and sauerkraut for the meal.

Harmonia Lodge presented a check for $12,000 to Camp Discovery at the November meeting. The money was raised during the annual Tee It Up For a Cause Golf Tournament. The Home Office provided Matching Funds. Lynroe Tschirhart, age 82, had been a member since 1950; Robert Jonas Sr., age 78, had been a member since 1978; and Erwin Ormond, age 94, had been a member since 1946. Lynroe had been an officer of the lodge for a number of years and was a dependable volunteer.

A representative of The 100 Club of San Antonio accepted a check for $2,750 from Harmonia Lodge at the November meeting. The money was raised during the annual Tee It Up For a Cause Golf Tournament. Dallas to hold luncheon Dec. 17

OLD GLORY – Old Glory Lodge will meet Sunday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m.

The lodge will provide the ham. Members are asked to bring a vegetable and dessert.

The lodge met in November and welcomed three new members, Allison Stone, Carson Stone and Bennett Stone, all of Hamlin.

The lodge received a note of thanks for its donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

Terry Letz and Marvin Vahlenkamp were thanked for the work they did on the water well for a special occasion.

DALLAS – Dallas Lodge’s Christmas luncheon will be held Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. at the hall.

Clint and Terri Holmes volunteered to prepare the food.

Andy Schellenberg reported on pioneer anniversaries at the October meeting. They include Sue K. Hornbuckle of Hockley, a 60-year member who joined Oct. 13, 1957; and John M. Bernhard of Torrance, Calif., a 50-year member who joined Oct. 16, 1957.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, the lodge donated three $50 Kroger gift cards and three cases of water to Dallas Fire and Rescue Station No. 3.

This station of 33 firefighters serves the downtown area that includes the hall.

Andy Schellenberg will also deliver each shift a letter that will

include Hermann Sons Life information and the lodge’s thanks for the services the fire personnel provide.

The lodge has received a letter from the Home Office approving the lodge’s bylaws change that prohibits a convicted felon from serving as an officer of the lodge.

The lodge is two short of its new member goal of five for 2017. Four are being recommended for approval by the end of the year. Lodges that meet their goal will receive $100.

Lodges that have an overall increase for the year will receive an additional $50.

San Marcos will celebrate Christmas on Dec. 10

SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will hold its annual Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Zorn Bowling Club on Hwy. 123 towards Seguin. The party will begin at 2 p.m. with Santa arriving in the late afternoon. A turkey dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Members are asked to bring cookies for dessert.

An adult gift exchange will be held. Gifts should be valued at $8. Parents are asked to bring a gift for Santa to present to their child.

Everyone is asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to the San Marcos Food Bank. Games, including guessing games, will be available during the afternoon.

Adult members will pay $5 to-

wards the cost of the meal as a reservation fee. Non-members will pay a $10 meal reservation fee. Children’s meals will cost $2.50 for those under age 12. The lodge will pay the balance of the cost for the meals.

A Christmas party duty list was passed around at the November meeting and members signed up for the duty they preferred. Those on the decorating committee are asked to be there at 1:30 p.m.

President Agnes Dreibrodt thanked everyone who contributed to the Make a Difference Day project by making contributions to the Adopt-AFamily Christmas Fund for the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Shelter.

tee included Agnes Dreibrodt, Janet Magin, Lillian Cargil, Shirley Faske and Janice Kuhen. The calendar was accepted as presented.

The 2018 slate of officers also was accepted. The officers will be president, Agnes Dreibrodt; vice president, Peggy Meiners; and financial secretary, Janice Kuhen. Larry Moreau was elected to another three-year term as financial trustee. He joins Janet Magin and Mary Lou Preuss who are currently serving as financial trustees.

The appointed officers will be Lillian Cargil, membership coordinator; Peggy Meiners, community coordinator; Shirley Faske, youth coordinator; and Bruce Moreau, communications coordinator.

Kirby Lodge will collect gifts for Boysville KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will celebrate Christmas on Sunday, Dec. 3. Members are reminded to bring unwrapped donations for Boysville. Donations can be anything for children ranging in age from newborn to 21. New Braunfels will meet Jackson County elects 2018 officers Dec. 3 for holiday party NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Lodge members will gather Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall for the annual Christmas party. Membership pins will be presented to 60-year and 70-year members and a catered meal will be served.

At the Nov. 5 meeting, the lodge welcomed three new junior members and one new adult member. The lodge also welcomed Raymond Martin III, a transfer from Harmonia Lodge.

A resolution of respect was read in memory of Pearl Beiersdorfer.

The lodge is proud of the New Braunfels School of Dance students who performed during the halftime show of the Harlem Globetrotters game at the AT&T Center on Nov. 12.

The lodge will donate $400 from its subsidy money to the Jackson County Helping Hands Group. This organization distributes funds and goods to those in need in the county.

There will not be a regular meeting in December.

Plans for the party were made at the Oct. 9 meeting.

Acknowledgments of donations were read from the Haskell Food Bank, the Senior Citizens Center and the Pregnancy Care Center.

Giddings members will celebrate Christmas on Dec. 14 GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge invites members to enjoy the Christmas meeting on Dec. 14.

Homemade tamales, charro beans, rice and other side dishes will be served.

The lodge welcomed new member Ashton Lane Akin at the November meeting.

A thank-you note was received from a flood victim for the lodge’s donation. The rebuilding has begun.

Due to the sale of the hall, memorabilia will have to be moved out. It was decided to contact the Home Office to see

if it will take the original charter that is 125 years old and add it to the museum.

The new hall owners have agreed to let the lodge continue to meet there for the next year or until the lodge has a new home. The lodge meets regularly on the second Thursday of the month.

Members approved a Christmas donation to the Lee County School of Dance.

In observance of Make a Difference Day, on Oct. 26 Jean Herzik, Loretta Chilek, Pat Abell and Peggy Kane served sandwiches, chips, cookies and drinks to 72 students at the Lee County Youth Center. This is an after-school program. Students are bussed in from the schools and are able to do homework, play games and do crafts until adults pick them up. These are

the same children who have made Mother’s Day cards for nursing home residents in the past.

Each year the lodge donates to the Blue Santa toy drive sponsored by the local police department.

The sheriff is Rodney Meyer, son of Willie Mae Meyer who is one of the lodge’s long-time members.

Fredericksburg plans dinner for Dec. 5 FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge will hold its Christmas dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The deadline to make reservations has passed. Members will not be contacted to see if they plan to attend.

Members may attend free of charge. Non-members will pay $15 for the meal.

Two new members were welcomed at the November meeting. They are junior Elliott J. Copeland and adult Shirley Bays Trees. The lodge still needs four more new members to meet its 2017 goal.

The 2018 officers were elected and include president, Hans Enderlin; vice president, Marissa Weinheimer; secretary-treasurer, Windy Duecker; and trustee

(three-year term), Edgar Priess.

President Hans Enderlin appointed Margaret Priess as the membership coordinator and Katherine Cornehl as the communications coordinator and the community coordinator.

Hill Country Youth Ranch was selected to receive the December donations.

A letter was read from the Home Office thanking the lodge for its donation to the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

The lodge observed Make a Difference Day on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Knopp II Nursing Home. Individuals from the assisted living facility joined the nursing home residents for games. Hans Enderlin called the games. Winners could choose a

piece of candy or money. Members assisting in the event included Lola and Hans Enderlin, Windy Duecker, Margaret and Edgar Priess, Geneva and Elgin Tatsch, VerNell Doebbler and Katherine Cornehl.

The lodge recognized the veterans and the widows of veterans who were in attendance.

Hans Enderlin and Elgin Tatsch were recognized for their work to secure the air conditioning unit behind the building and for clearing out the grape vines and brush on the property.

Mission-Alamo elects officers SAN ANTONIO – There were lots of scary costumes and lots of treats at the October meeting of Mission-Alamo Lodge.

Dinner featured fried chicken, side dishes, homemade breads and lots of desserts. Games followed.

The 2018 officers were elected and will be Sylvia Schulmeier, president; Diane Cline, vice president; Bernice Vogel, financial secretary; Georgia Hall, recording secretary; Jack Larned,

trustee; and John Hall, Finance Committee member. Bernice Vogel and Denise Wright were elected to represent the lodge on the Home Association Board.

Three new junior members were welcomed. They are Colton Samuel Moeller, Easton Joseph Lehman and Eli Joseph Zunker.

Jourdanton raises funds for crisis center Jourdanton Lodge recently sponsored a Matching Funds event to raise money for the Atascosa Family Crisis Center. The lodge held a bake sale and a drawing for a quilt. Cathleen Rutherford made the quilt top. Nancy Young did the quilting. A total of $872 was raised with another $500 in Matching Funds coming from the Home Office. Bernardo Christmas party Dec. 13 BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will hold its annual Christmas party on Dec. 13 in the meeting room at the Bernardo Fire Station.

Members are asked to bring two side dishes and the lodge will provide turkey, dressing and ham.

Happy hour will begin at 6 p.m. and the meal will be served at 7 p.m.

Anyone wishing to participate in the gift exchange is asked to bring a $10 gift for a man or woman. Children in attendance will receive a gift from the lodge.

DEANVILLE – Vice President of Operations Samantha Schulmeier was a special guest at the Deanville Lodge October meeting. She spoke on the name change to Hermann Sons Life and recognized two members, Tammy Jones and Marsha Kocurek who were appointed to Home Office committees.

pins. Glenn has been a member since Nov. 3, 1947. Robert joined on Aug. 31, 1947. Gerald Korth received his 50-year pin. He became a member June 27, 1967.

Thanks go to Paul and Cheryl Gescheidle who presented the food truck fund-raiser idea to lodge members months ago, and then formed a committee to help organize the successful event.

Five food trucks and more than 30 craft vendors along with two micro-breweries set up booths to sell food, drink and craft items to non-stop customers.

HOUSTON – EdelweissMagnolia Lodge will celebrate Christmas on Dec. 3 at 3 p.m. at Tony Mandola’s, 1212 Waugh Drive, Houston.

Members are mourning the passing of John Chometa on Aug. 27 at the age of 91. He had been a member since 1977 and had served as president of the lodge at one time.

Survivors include four children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was laid to rest at the Houston National Veterans Cemetery in Houston.

Members also mourn the passing of Louise Rekieta Stoever on Sept. 21 at the age of 94. She received her 70-year membership pin earlier this year.

She also was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, the St. Charles Altar Society, SPJST Lodge No. 88 and Catholic Daughters of America Court Christ the King No. 1750.

Survivors include six children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Prinz Solms party Dec. 10 BULVERDE – Prinz Solms Lodge will host a Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Bulverde Community Center beginning at 1 p.m. The event will include a performance by the Hill Country School of Dance students and a visit from Santa.

Anton Wenzel has new members SAN ANTONIO – Anton Wenzel Lodge will celebrate Christmas with tamales and ham in December. Members are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert.

A turkey dinner was served at the November meeting.
