The second Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp was held July 8-11 at Hilltop. This year there were 63 campers, up from 38 last year. Counselors and therapists from the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas helped the children as they cope with the loss of a loved one. During one of the activities the children created wood hearts and then placed them at the base of a tree that will be planted at the Camp as a reminder of this year’s session. Home Office seeks information on military personnel SAN ANTONIO – Hermann Sons Life is proud of our many members who have served in the military . Some of those men and women have paid the ultimate price for that service .

In the Hermann Sons Life museum that is housed on the second floor of the Home Office in San Antonio, there is a display that honors members who died during World War II .

Harmonia seeks cemetery info SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge is seeking information on the Harmonia Cemetery located at Paso Hondo and North Palmetto streets in San Antonio.

Few records exist on the cemetery, according to Angelina Kretzschmar who is doing research on the cemetery for a book she has volunteered to compile for the lodge. Angelina’s husband Charles is a member of Harmonia Lodge.

According to Angelina, on Nov. 6, 1877, the City of San Antonio, through Mayor J.H. French, donated to Harmonia Lodge Number 1 a cemetery on Paso Hondo Street.

Unfortunately, an official deed from that transaction cannot be found.

The lodge’s trustees are now caring for the cemetery.

Earlier this year, 10 volunteers from the lodge cleaned the cemetery and mowed it. A “Harmonia Lodge #1” sign was wired to the front fence and the tombstones were cleaned in May. More cemetery cleaning is planned when the weather allows. Volunteers are welcome.

Angelina shared some of the information that she does have.

The earliest burial with a tombstone is that of Alma Menger, a baby who lived from March 30, 1880, to June 9, 1880. The latest burial with a tombstone is that of Cecilia Palesch, who was born in 1911 and died in 1995.

Angelina has a list of those buried in the cemetery by the date of death. But there are some burials without

dates.

Available death certificates found online list the cemetery as the “Old Hermann Sons” Cemetery.

In January 2006, the San Antonio Genealogical Society on Melissa Street in San Antonio surveyed the cemetery. The society called it the “Hermann Sons Cemetery–Harmonia Lodge #1.” A list of burials is available without pictures of the tombstones.

Then in 2010, a volunteer with Findagrave.com surveyed the cemetery. Some of the tombstones were so black with mold and dirt they cannot be read in the online photos. Pictures of the tombstones and additional information are available about the burials and linked to relatives.

Angelina says this is a free website. Contributors are all volunteers. She and Charles are contributors. The pictures document the condition of the tombstones making this a valuable website, she said.

Very little information is known about the cemetery between 1880 and 2006, Angelina says. A gate and sign were installed and stolen years ago. The last caretaker, Lelaud C. Farley, stopped mowing the cemetery due to illness.

Future CITs can apply for summer of 2019 Are you a Hermann Sons Life member who could not attend Camp this summer because you were 14-years-old? Now is the time to apply for the 2019 Counselor-In-Training program!

To be eligible to apply to this program, you must be a past Hermann Sons Life camper, a current member of Hermann Sons Life, and you must turn 15 by Sept. 1, 2019. Eligible applicants will be invited to an overnight interview camp in January 2018 in Comfort.

The CIT program offers past campers educational and leadership experiences, preparing them to be the future leaders of Hermann Sons Life Camp and their communities.

If you would like to be considered for the CIT program next summer, the application will need to be completed on our website. Go to www.hermannsonslife.org/counselor-trainingapplication. Applications are due no later than Sept. 30, 2018.

5 – The 63rd annual reunion of the descendants of August Spies will be held at the Moravia Dining Hall, across the street from 11134 FM 957, Schulenburg, starting at 10 a.m. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and dessert. 29 – The Tee It Up For a Cause Golf Tournament sponsored by Harmonia Lodge will be held at The Republic Golf Club, 4226 S.E. Military Drive, San Antonio. The format is four-person team, Florida Scramble. Check in is at 7:30 a.m. and shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. Entry fee is $100 per player.

There will be team prizes, contests, door prizes and a silent auction. The event benefits Camp Discovery, a camp for children with cancer, and the 100 Club of San Antonio that supports the families of law enforcement and fire department personnel who have died in the line of duty. New annuity bonus offer driving interest

By TIM KOLBE VIce President of Marketing June 15, 2018, saw a first for Hermann Sons Life. What could that be you ask? That’s the day we decided to offer an initial bonus on our 9-year annuity products (see ad below).

For years we all have seen other insurance companies advertise bonuses to attract annuity business. Many of our agents would ask periodically if Hermann Sons Life would consider doing the same. We have traditionally believed that since we offer a good solid and stable rate of return, it was unnecessary to offer a bonus rate for new annuity contracts.

But during the past year, we discussed the idea again and came up with a way to offer a bonus and still work around the administrative pitfalls. The solution allows a bonus on the initial premium deposit or contribution into a new annuity certificate. We settled on a bonus offer of one half of one percent (0.5 percent), which will be applied to the initial account balance upon opening the annuity.

The larger the initial deposit, the greater the bonus will be.

Our 9-year annuity products can be established with as little as $2,500, or a maximum of $250,000 first year contribution ($150,000 per year thereafter).

Medical Notes Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent.

For healthy people, bumping

into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to

discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others.

Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it.

But clumsiness also can be

a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and sensory systems. That means the eyes,

brain, nerves, cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together.

Boerne Lodge to meet Aug. 3, RSVP for lunch

BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Aug. 3, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center at 830-249-2114 by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting.

Colleen Voight was the guest speaker at the July 6 meeting and spoke about the “Angels All Around You” ministry. This organization’s mission is to recognize, honor, support and encourage members of the armed forces, first responders and their families in Boerne and the surrounding areas.

Their involvement in the community serves troops through

regular prayer, maintaining individual contact through email, letters and care packages, and honoring them as a community with special events.

She said that most military members do not wish to be thought of or treated any differently than other people however, the special circumstances of their life can severely test their faith and spiritual strength. The challenges of reassignments, lengthy separations from loved ones, deployments in harm’s way, dangerous and traumatic experiences, and financial issues lead to a special need for fellowship, love, mentoring and caring that the community has

the opportunity and duty to give them.

The lodge made a $200 donation to the organization.

Three new junior members were welcomed into the lodge.

They are Ava Willman and Klair and Kate Allison.

Vineta plans anniversary SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will meet Aug 2. The lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a covered dish. The regular meeting will follow the meal and then games will be played. Members are asked to bring school supplies or new clothing for boys or girls sizes 0 to 16 to donate to the local children’s shelter.

For the social on Aug. 15 members will gather at 10:30 a.m. for bunco and a surprise lunch served by Lorene Kreusel.

On Sept. 6 the lodge will celebrate its 117th anniversary. Pioneer members and past presidents will be honored. If you plan to attend, call 210-602-5147

Giddings Lodge presented a donation to Trail Life members of Troop 143 that was to be used for their campout. The donation was in appreciation of flag ceremonies the troop conducts for the lodge in observance of Flag Day in June.

GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge honored its scholarship recipients and their families at a pizza party in June. The recipients were Thomas Birnbaum, Erin Michael, Sara Matejcek and Damian DeLaRosa.

The lodge welcomes new member Jacelyn Jones.

Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe and wife Cheryl were in attendance. Tim presented Loretta Chilek a jacket for her sales that earned her membership in the 2016 President’s Club and a certificate for being a Last Agent Standing in 2017. The lodge is proud of Loretta.

For the last two years, the Trail Life members of Troop 143 have presented a flag ceremony at the June lodge meetings. In appreciation, the lodge presented a donation in support of the group’s summer campout.

Fort Worth Lodge to meet Sept. 9 at Westcreek Lanes FORT WORTH – Camp season is in full swing. Thanks go to all the Fort Worth Lodge mothers who have shared their photos.

If your child came home with a Camp story or award, let Sandra Jones know about it.

Campers are reminded that there will be a drawing and someone will get a portion of their Camp fee refunded once a complete list of Fort Worth campers is available.

Youth Coordinator Ronnie Jones hopes the campers enjoyed receiving their t-shirts and that they wore them during Camp.

In August, the Fort Worth Lodge bowlers will be traveling to Austin to participate in the Hermann Sons Life State Bowling Tournament. If you missed this year’s tournament, make plans now to join a league so you can bowl next year.

This is a fun tournament where members from across the state come together to bowl (which is

secondary) and see old friends.

If you have never bowled this tournament, then you don’t know what you are missing.

The lodge’s next meeting will be held Sept. 9 at Westcreek Lanes. Hope to see lots of members there, as plans will be made for Make a Difference Day and the Christmas party.

Milestone members for July include Constance Johnson, a 70year member who joined July 1, 1948. Joining on July 24, 1958, were Michael Flora and William Flora. On July 7, 1968, Adella Reagan joined the lodge, so she becomes a 50-year member this year.

Speaking of milestones, on July 9, Ernest and Nancy Kelly celebrated 35 years of marriage.

Schulenburg has a new member SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. for refreshments and 7 p.m. for dinner and the meeting at the Schulenburg Community Center.

Come to the Hall and see all the improvements and share in the history and be a part of the ever-changing Deep Elm neighborhood.

There is plenty to offer at the Hall including swing dancing on Wednesday evenings and an acoustic song circle on Thursdays.

You can rent the Hall for functions and receptions and the like.

Columbia Lodge held its annual picnic at the home of Doug and Mary Caudill in the middle of June.

By all accounts, the pool was refreshing, the food was excellent as usual and the company grand. Thanks go to the Caudill clan for always hosting such a great and glorious picnic.

has been sidelined with a minor ailment but the recovery process is long. Best wishes also are extended to Jean Ernst, as she has had a few health complications arise.

As always, there is the continuing construction and renovations that keep the Hall up to date and able to serve members and friends.

Bob Sullivan and Mark Martinek are helping with several projects.

There is always room for more volunteers to help with the load. Thanks go to all those who have helped in making the Hall a grand place to meet and greet.

The summer has come to a close at Hermann Sons Life Camp. This year boys and girls ages 9-13 attended five full-week sessions and one half-week session at our Camp in Comfort. This year’s theme was “Choose Kind at Camp.” The smiles on the faces of the children tell the story - it was a great summer!

“Choose Kind at Camp” was the theme for this year’s Camp season so we were especially excited to celebrate the American Camp Association’s first Camp Kindness Day on July 24. In observance of the day, campers made cards that will be part of the next “Hugs From Home” packages that will be sent to our troops serving overseas.

COMFORT – Grieving the loss of a loved one is never easy, no matter how old we are. But for children, losing someone close to you, especially a sibling or parent, can be especially hard.

The Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp was created to help these children on their healing journey.

The second of these special sessions was held July 8-11 at Hilltop.

This year 63 children – ranging in age from almost 6 to 17 – attended the session. There were 38 children at last year’s first Grief Support Session.

During the session, the children got to experience all the fun of a summer camp. They did traditional camp activities like swimming and making S’mores on a camp-

fire. The older children even got to try out the zip-line.

But lots of time was set aside to do what the children came there to do. The healing circles and other activities lead by therapists from the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas gave the children an opportunity to talk about the loved ones that they were mourning. The healing circles were held multiple times a day with the children grouped by age.

Other activities including the creation of a Worry Tree (see photo below). The children wrote their worries on a piece of paper and tied them to the tree.

On another day, a therapy dog came and visited with the children.

Each child was asked to bring a photo of his or her loved one with them. The pictures were displayed on a table in the Dining Hall.

On the last day, the children decorated hearts made of wood with a message and laid them at the base of a tree that will be planted as a reminder of the week. A tree also was planted last year.

Tami Logsdon was the leader of the group from the CBC and she talked about how well the session had gone.

“One of the great things that happened this week was that these children who came from all different kinds of backgrounds were able to be here together in this safe place and talk about their feelings and really bond with one another,” she said.

Some of the children who attended last year’s session came back but there were lots of new faces as well.

About half of the children are Hermann Sons Life members. The rest were referred to the session through the CBC. Some come from small towns while others live in big cities.

Some have attended a summer camp before but for others this was their first opportunity to experience something like this.

The regular Hermann Sons Life Camp counselors donated their time. They were not paid to be there.

“I can’t even begin to say enough about how powerful this session is. I’m so thankful I’ve been a part of it since the begin-

ning. Seeing these kids who have been through so much just have smiles on their faces is simply the best,” Executive Camp Director Katie Miller said.

Children attend the session free of charge (except for a small assessment fee).

Donations from lodges and individuals as well as fund-raisers made the session possible.

Comfort Lodge hosted a golf tournament to raise money.

San Marcos Lodge put together goody bags for the children and Siemering Lodge members crocheted toys that were given to the children.

Kirby Lodge to meet Aug. 6 with spaghetti on menu KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. The lodge will provide spaghetti.

The lodge’s scholarship recipient this year is Johnny Freudenrich III. Johnny will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall majoring in construction engineering. Johnny is an active lodge member. He has helped at several of the lodge events such as the lodge softball tournament benefitting HONOR 22, We Back the Blue, Red and Green 5k/10k benefitting The 100 Club of San Antonio and Soldier’s Angels, the lodge’s new member event, serving the lodge meals and others. Bandera dinner Aug. 19

Harmonia plans annual golf tourney

BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge will hold its annual volunteer appreciation dinner on Aug. 19 at 4 p.m. at River City Seafood and Grill.

The next lodge meeting will be held Oct. 21 at the home of Gary and Kathleen Reile.

The July 8 meeting also was held at their home. Pizza and salad with desserts was served.

Six new members were welcomed. They are Lillian D’Spain, Russell Anderwald, Madeline Anderwald, Cesar Munoz, Skylar Munoz and Landon Munoz.

SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge is gearing up for its annual Tee It Up For a Cause Golf Tournament scheduled for Sept. 29 at The Republic Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament benefit Camp Discovery, a camp for children with cancer, and The 100 Club of San Antonio, an organization that supports the families of firemen and police officers who have died in the line of duty. Volunteers are needed to help before and during the tournament.

On Sunday, July 8, officers and committee members met at the home of Agents Marlin and Sharon Tanneberger to discuss and finalize the food menu and building decorations for the upcoming business meeting and pin presentation, the rules for the use of the La Vernia Lodge building and the agenda for the upcoming workday.

Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge is making a difference in the Houston Heights community. The food pantry provides basic groceries, frozen meats, eggs and fresh produce to families in need. On June 16, Kerrville Lodge presented an American flag to the Hill Country Veterans Center in observance of Flag Day. Lodge members in attendance were President Tony Straube, Vice President Scott Shoemaker and member Jimmy Wheat.

Paige plans potluck lunch for Aug. 12 PAIGE – The ladies of Paige Lodge honored the men for Father’s Day with a fried chicken lunch on Sunday, June 10.

Special thanks go to Bernice Basward and Sandy Botkin for providing the fried chicken, LaVerne Mattiza for the noodles and corn, Debbie Harmon for the potato salad, Brigette Burttschell for the pasta salad, Ethel Kunkel for her noodles, Chelle Dube for the rolls and to everyone who brought side dishes and desserts.

Chelle thanked LaVerne Mattiza for conducting the May meeting in her absence and to the ladies for providing the lunch. The men also expressed their appreciation for the lunch.

Bernice Basward reported sending a sympathy card to the Annie Mae Ahlhorn family following her passing.

Chelle thanked those who participated in the yard sale on Saturday, June 9. The sale benefitted the lodge. Spe-

cial thanks go to Ronnie Harmon for setting up tables and cleaning up and to Debbie Harmon for fixing and providing breakfast tacos for the workers. Their efforts are appreciated.

Waylon Kunkel won the attendance prize and Ronnie Harmon won the dollar pot. A koozie was given to each man present at the meeting.

A potluck lunch is planned prior to the Aug. 12 meeting.

Larry Marusik, Audrey Krenek, James Krenek, Evelyn Ilse and Vernon Roesler.

Members discussed ways to improve meeting attendance and agreed to increase the secretary’s pay due to the recent passing of the president and vice president.

Round Top Lodge donates to Carmine fire department ROUND TOP – Round Top Lodge met June 28 at the American Legion Hall Agent Linda Mattocks presented information on the bonus being paid on 9-year annuities.

Members voted to send a monetary donation to the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department Feast scheduled for July 15.

Attendance prize winners were Orville Glaesmann, Sophie Rauch, Barton Garlin, Margie Stardig and Linda Mattocks.

Rutersville will meet Aug.1 RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge will meet Aug. 1. Prospective members and visitors are welcome. There was no meeting held in July due to the July 4th holiday.

The lodge held its annual Family Fun Night Saturday, June 23.

Members enjoyed cold beverages, boiled shrimp, fried fish, fried squash, hushpuppies and many other side dishes and desserts.

bach received a 70-year pin. He has been a member since June 3, 1948. Receiving 60-year pins were Ben Halamicek, a member since Nov. 5, 1958; Delbert Gest, a member since Nov. 16, 1958; and Randy Stork, a member since July 24, 1958. JoAn Heintschel received a 50-year pin. She has been a member since April 7, 1968.

A silent auction was held with many items of interest to bid on.

SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 13. The theme will be Hawaiian.

Deanville holds annual Fourth of July celebration DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge celebrated Flag Day and the Fourth of July.

The Flag Day celebration included the raising of the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance followed by refreshments and fellowship.

The annual Fourth of July celebration was a successful day for the lodge and provided a day of fellowship as Independence Day was celebrated by young and old. The highlight of the day was the pit barbecue that was ready to sell at 7 a.m. Other activities were held throughout the day.

As an added bonus, the day was unseasonably cool with a much need 1-3/4 inches of rain.

This event would not be possible without the help of members and non-members. An appreciation lunch will be served on July 29 at noon for all who had a part in making the annual celebration a success.

Activities on the Fourth of July at the historic Deanville Lodge Hall included a dance.

Deanville Lodge held a Flag Day celebration on June 14. This is an annual event for the lodge.

The monthly July meeting will be held at 2 p.m. following the luncheon.

bers observed a moment of silence in memory of J.W. (Bubba) Perry.

Deanville Lodge hosted its annual Fourth of July celebration again this year. Those attending had to take cover for a while as muchneeded rain fell during the day.

Siemering Lodge donates stuffed toys to Grief Support Session campers Members of Siemering Lodge made 75 hand-made, hand-sized stuffed toys for the children attending this year’s Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp. Sally and daughter Sharon Fite made all of the dolls. They said it took 225 hours to complete them. The lodge’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 14. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend as members will be selecting their next service project and enjoying pizza and birthday cake. New ideas always are welcome along with new members and newly active members.

Niederwald pioneer receives 70-year pin Adeline Schubert shows off the 70-year membership pin she has received. Adeline is a member of Niederwald Lodge. She became a member Jan. 4, 1948. Corpus Christi Lodge plans August summer party CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will hold its summer party in August. The next regular meeting is set for Sept. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at Fuddruckers.

The most recent meeting was held July 2 at the Chicken Shack.

Pat Riek received her 50-year membership pin from lodge President Frank Brandon. She has been a member since Oct. 10, 1968.

Michelle Ballard was a door prize winner at the July meeting of Corpus Christi Lodge.

YOAKUM – Hochheim-Prairie Lodge will meet Sunday, Aug. 12.

At the June meeting, Wilburn Pargmann presented Betty Rathkamp with flags that she in turn placed on the graves of veterans buried in the Hermann Sons Cemetery.

The lodge also presented the Yoakum Volunteer Fire Department with flags from its dance club that will be used each year during the Memorial Day service.

The presentation was made as part of the lodge’s Join Hands Day project.

The lodge’s scholarship recipients this year are Hunter Kvinta, son of Kim and Chris Kvinta, and Lisa Seidenberger, daughter of Mark and Ann Seidenberger.

Each will receive $500.

On July 22 the lodge hosted a games party for the residents at the Stevens Nursing Home.

Bernardo will serve ice cream Aug. 15 BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will meet Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Station. The lodge will provide the ice cream and members are asked to bring the toppings.

Two new members were welcomed at the July 18 meeting.

They are Laila Paige Flowers and Stella Rose Cooney.

Agents Terrel and Robin Maertz reported that they would be attending an agent

training at the Home Office in San Antonio on Saturday, Aug. 11.

The Home Office sent a letter thanking the lodge for its donation to the “Hugs from Home” program.

Theresa Henneke, a first-time Hermann Sons Life camper, also sent a letter thanking the lodge for its donation toward the cost of attending Camp. Theresa also attended the lodge’s summer social and was excited to

talk about her experience.

Flatonia to meet at Robert’s Steakhouse FLATONIA – Flatonia Lodge met July 11 at Robert’s Steakhouse.

Agent Mary K. Seifert reported that registration is under way for the 2018-2019 dance season.
