I dropped my granddaughter off for her first week at Camp on Sunday. I never imagined myself saying those words. It seems just yesterday that my children were campers.

The atmosphere at Camp was like a gathering of friends. I visited with three past counselors and several past campers dropping off their children. I talked with parents who were apprehensive about leaving their child for their first year at Camp, and watched their apprehension melt away as they learned of the legacy of leadership at Camp and throughout our youth programs.

Having spent 28 summers at our Camp, I understand how Camp impacts lives. Parents and grandparents around the state realize too as their children return home with stories of adventure and learning. It’s the amazing Camp counselors who provide an environment where children can experience something new in a safe and caring atmosphere.

For 64 years Camp has been a summer tradition for Hermann Sons Life families throughout Texas.

This year Camp touched lives in a very special way as we hosted our first Grief Support Session.

Grand Lodge Committee appointments made SAN ANTONIO – Thirty-six members of Hermann Sons Life have been appointed to the four Grand Lodge committees created when the new governance structure was approved by delegates to the 47th Grand Lodge Convention in May. The appointments were made by President and CEO Buddy Preuss with the approval of the Board of Directors.

“I want to thank these members for agreeing to serve on these committees,” President Preuss said. “The committee structure was changed in an effort to give members more voice in the decisions that impact Hermann Sons Life. I look forward to working with these committees during the next four years.”

The Laws Committee has 15 members.

It is charged with reviewing any proposed changes to Grand Lodge Laws as to their necessity, formality and legality.

Harmonia sets date for charity golf tourney

SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge will host its annual benefit golf tournament on Saturday, Sept . 30, at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio . The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a .m .

The tournament name has been changed to Hermann Sons Life Tee It Up For a Cause . It will still benefit Camp Discovery, a camp for children with cancer .

Cost per player will be $100 . The fee includes a goodie bag, greens fee, cart, range balls and awards luncheon .

The tournament will follow a four-person Florida Scramble format . There will be team prizes, contests, door prizes and a silent auction .

This will be the 24th year for the tourna-

ment that has made it possible for children with cancer to enjoy a week at summer camp free of charge .

The lodge is looking for sponsors for the event . Several levels of sponsorship are available .

The Albatross Sponsorship fee is $3,000 and includes registration for two teams, two hole sponsor signs, sponsor signage at the event and recognition on all event correspondence .

The Eagle Sponsorship fee is $2,500 and includes registration for one team, two hole sponsor signs, sponsor signage at the event and recognition on all event correspondence .

The Birdie Sponsorship fee is $2,000 and includes registration for one team,

one hole sponsor sign, sponsor signage at the event and recognition on all event correspondence .

Recruiting members is everybody’s duty

By TIM KOLBE Vice President of Marketing The dog days of summer are upon us. Rain for us in San Antonio is as scarce as hen’s teeth.

Since the 47th Grand Lodge Convention in May, the Marketing Department staff has been busy working on the name change to Hermann Sons Life.

A lot of behind the scenes work was and still is going on involving many different departments to ready us for the change.

Marketing Analyst Ana Vasquez received new training on electronic filing of all the forms, certificates and related matters with the Texas Department of Insurance for approval.

We completed the submissions and received state approval on July 5.

I want to express my apprecia-

tion to Ana and all the Home Office personnel who contributed to this project.

I attended the Family Fun Day at Schlitterbahn on June 17 to support our campaign to bring in new members.

Attendees to the Fun Day were sent referral cards to bring with them to the registration table at the event.

In exchange for a referral, each recommender received a Hermann Sons tote bag, like the ones available at the Convention. In all we received 20 referrals for new members. Did I mention that it was hot that day? Alas, I was not dressed for swimming.

I was honored to attend the closing ceremony of the Grief Support Camp in Comfort. I spoke with several families who

asked about our organization. It was a great first year for our focused service cause and we look for continued growth in future years.

Lodge presidents and secretaries were recently mailed a letter updating our lodges with the status of the 2017 Lodge Membership Campaign “We Strengthen Community Through Protection and Service.”

As of July 1, 10 lodges have already met and others are on their way to meeting their 2017 new member goal. There is still plenty of time for all lodges to achieve their goal, so I’m asking for your help.

Lodge leaders and members are a vital resource in the drive to gain new members for our organization.

Share your story with others September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. The Home Office is looking for stories about how life insurance with Hermann Sons Life has benefitted the families of our members.

As we continue to seek ways to grow Hermann Sons Life and extend our benefits and products to more and more people, we are asking our members to share their stories about how Hermann Sons Life, its life insurance products and its many benefits have made a positive impact on them and their families.

this new member campaign, as it takes the involvement from the president all the way down to the individual lodge member to spread the word about Hermann Sons Life and the great community service activities we provide in communities across Texas.

Join me in turning those activities into recruitment opportunities for new members. Lodge community and membership coordinators could take the lead on this.

• Consider hosting a new member appreciation event or an open house to showcase the benefits of Hermann Sons Life membership.

• Invite area agents to attend and speak or set up an informational display. If needed, contact the Marketing Department and

we will provide an agent for your event (800-234-4124).

• Ask your area agent to participate in lodge community service activities, as it gets them in contact with people who could benefit from the valuable life insurance protection plans that we offer.

Remember, if your lodge meets or exceeds its 2017 new member goal it will receive a $100 bonus. If your lodge has an overall net increase in membership, it will receive an additional $50. Put those funds to good use to increase membership for our organization. Moreover, each individual recommender is eligible for a monthly drawing for $100 for referring a new member.

Five lead the way in quarter SAN ANTONIO – Agents will be receiving cash bonuses for their production during the second quarter of 2017.

Shirley Huebinger of New Braunfels Lodge wrote the most applications (15) statewide. She was followed in second place by Angela Netherton from Kirby Lodge with 12 and Marlin Tanneberger from La Vernia Lodge in third place with 11.

Sister Huebinger was also the top application writer in Region 2 while Sister Netherton finished in first place in applications written in Region 5. Norma Bruns from Comfort Lodge wrote nine applications in Region 3. Brother Tanneberger finished in first place in Region 4 and was followed by Mary Koenig from Hochheim-Prairie Lodge with nine.

In the new premium income generated category, Brother Tanneberger finished in first place with $16,762. He was followed in second place by Sister Bruns with $7,917 and in third place by Sister Neth-

erton with $7,421.

Sister Huebinger finished in first place in Region 2 with her $6,775 in premium income.

Sister Bruns was first in Region 3. Brother Tanneberger was first in Region 3 and was followed by Mary Koenig with $5,665. Sister Netherton finished in first place in Region 5.

Earning Special Recognition honors in the applications written category were Special Representative Teresa Saathoff, 42; Special Representative Eulla Krueger, 21; Stacy Saathoff, Hondo Victory Lodge, 15; Special Representative Gary Falkenberg, 12; Tanya Crisp, Macdona Lodge; Special Representative Marilyn Vogt and Carol Krauss, Pershing Lodge 11; and Glenford Boehme, Castroville Lodge, 10.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg received Special Recognition honors in the new premium income generated category with $25,339.

Earning Honorable Mention honors in the applications written category were

Three special representatives earned Honorable Mention honors in the new premium income generated category. Teresa Saathoff has $7,940; Eulla Krueger had $4,538; and Al Stryk had $3,368.

Agents must meet minimum requirements for applications written and new premium income generated in order to qualify for quarterly bonuses. Special representatives cannot compete for these bonuses.

Clarke wins gift card for June recommenders The Marketing Department is recognizing 47 recommenders for the month of June. This brings the total to 239 members recommending 314 new members to Hermann Sons in 2017. Lodges earn recognition for Join Hands Day projects SAN ANTONIO – Lodges have been recognized for their Join Hands Day projects with one of three certificates.

GOLD LEVEL Certificates were presented to lodges that had 26-50 volunteers from the lodge and community members working together on a project to benefit the community.

BLUE LEVEL Certificates were

presented to lodges that had 1 to 25 volunteers from the lodge and community members working together on a project to benefit the community.

BLACK LEVEL Certificates were presented to lodges that made donations or money and/or non-perishable goods. Many of these lodges made donations to the Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp.

BANDERA COUNTY LODGE members visited the Cedar Creek Nursing facility in Bandera in observance of Join Hands Day. The residents received pudding cups, flowers and books. Taking part in the project were Paul and Eileen Heath, Gary and Kathleen Reile, Sandy and Jack Trenkelbach, Pam and Allan Biering and Lee Fields.

Students from a Home School group and their parents helped GIDDINGS LODGE members deliver cards to residents at Oakland Manor Nursing Home and Giddings Rehabilitation and Residences in June. The children from Bastrop accompanied members Pat Abell, Loretta Chilek, Charlie Harmon, Landon Harmon and Brenda Potter as they visited with friends and members currently residing at those facilities. The children at the Lee County Youth Center had made the cards.

ROUND TOP LODGE members volunteered their time to man the Country Store booth at the Round Top/Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department fundraising celebration.

President Linda Mattocks presented the proceeds from the sale of items in the Country Store booth to Assistant Fire Chief Calvin Krause.

PERSHING LODGE members made donations to SAMMinistries in San Antonio. The mission of SAMMinistries is to prevent homelessness in San Antonio through a compassionate, holistic approach that brings self sufficiency, pride and dignity to struggling families with nowhere else to turn.

Join Hands Day 2017

STOCKDALE LODGE purchased 100 new United States flags and joined with Stockdale Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for a Memorial Day ceremony on May 26. Following the ceremony, flags were placed on veterans’ graves. The lodge also provided refreshments

HONDO VICTORY and DUNLAY LODGE members joined volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 370 and Hondo AARP Chapter 2543 and picked up trash and debris along County Roads 454 and 4631 (old Highway 90).

KARNES CITY LODGE members visited Bluebonnet Nursing Home and Karnes City Care Center on May 25 and May 30.

AUSTIN LODGE made a monetary donation to the Ben Hur Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston. Presenting the check were, from left, junior members Emily Lindsey and Jordan Nelson and Community Coordinator Kimberly Lindsey. Accepting the check was Ben Hur Shiners’ Recorder Boyce Freitag. TAYLOR LODGE collects canned goods and non-perishable items throughout the year to donate to local charities. The theme is “A Bushel and a Peck with a Hug Around the Neck.”

The goods are put into “bushel and peck” containers and then donated with a big hug to soup kitchens and local church ministries to help those in need.

PAUL VOGT LODGE donated $100 to Threads of Love for the purchase of needed fabric, thread and lace along with wedding gowns the organization uses to make burial garments for babies and casket linings. Materials are also used by the non-profit organization to make blankets and hats for premature babies.

Medical Notes Cold season never seems to take a year off. Experts estimate that colds are so widespread that very few humans escape infection.

While there’s no cure for the common cold, cold remedies have been around for centuries. Chicken soup remains one of the more popular cold remedies. Grandmothers have long espoused the virtues of chicken soup with regard to treating

colds, but now research is backing up those claims.

Researchers have long examined the potential health benefits of chicken soup in an attempt to understand why it seems to be such an effective tonic at treating colds. A 1998 report found that broth may help improve the function of the tiny hairs in noses called cilia. The cilia help prevent contagions from getting into the body. Hot fluids also can help

increase the movement of nasal mucus, helping to relieve stuffiness and congestion.

Chicken soup also can help reduce inflammation, which often results as the immune system works to fight the cold virus. A study found that chicken soup appears to inhibit the movement of certain immune cells to mucus membrane surfaces. As a result, mucus production is inhibited and cold symptoms are reduced.

Chicken soup is loaded with immune-boosting vegetables and other ingredients that provide phytonutrients. The American Cancer Society defines phytonutrients, or phytochemicals, as plant compounds like carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol and phytosterols that are thought to have health-protecting qualities.

Chicken soup may also contain onions and garlic, which are believed to have natural antibacte-

rial or antiseptic properties.

Chicken soup also helps a person feel better because it effectively delivers vitamins and minerals.

While some profess that homemade chicken soup is the key to fighting a cold, many commercially-made soups fit the bill as well. The salt, steam, vegetables, chicken protein, and soothing broth combine to form a worthy adversary to the common cold.

The staff from Hermann Sons Life Camp visited the Home on June 5 and shared in an ice cream social with the residents.

The counselors and other staff members mingled and visited with the residents during this annual visit that is held prior to the start of the Camp season.

On Father’s Day, the Home’s kitchen staff included Deddi Castro and Manager Brenda Gunnink. They served fried chicken with mashed potatoes and peas, a salad and pineapple upside down cake for dessert.

Resident Al Schroeder assisted Anglican Priest David Guthrie with Holy Communion at Chapel service on June 26.

Roland Naumann’s daughter Julie sent a report about his recent vacation to the Grand Teton National Park. On June 22, his week-long adventure began with a flight out of San Antonio with his son, Thomas Naumann, to Jackson, Wyoming. There

they met up with the rest of the family including his daughter, Julie Sheldon, and husband Chuck, granddaughters Jennifer Sheldon and boyfriend, Andy Wilkes, and Michelle Sheldon.

While there, the group of seven took part in several activities as they enjoyed the beauty of the majestic Teton Range. At the Teton Village they boarded an aerial tram that took them up to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain at 10,450 feet to enjoy a grand view of the Tetons. The group was excited to see some large moose along with bison, elk and antelope on the day they took a tour to visit various scenic sights in the park. During an adventure on the Snake River some took a slow float raft ride while a few chose to take on the white water rapids. Horseback

Residents Martha Willems and John Widner were honored with birthday cake and ice cream at the noon meal on June 27. riding was also on the agenda for some. Because they were so close to Yellowstone National Park, one day was set aside to drive over and take in some of the sights there, including a

stop to watch the Old Faithful Geyser. Roland said the scenery was breathtaking and to be able to enjoy this time with his family was very memorable.

The summer of 2017 at Hermann Sons Life Camp is winding down. The last session ends on Aug. 5.

Grief Support Session held for first time COMFORT – Forty children and teens mourning the death of someone close to them took another step on their healing journey this summer when they attended the first-ever Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp.

The session was held July 5-8 at Hilltop.

About half of them were Hermann Sons Life members. The others were referred to the Camp through the Children’s Bereavement Center in San Antonio.

“When we decided we wanted to offer this Grief Support Session we knew we had the facility and the staff to make this a fun time for these children. What we didn’t have were the therapists who could help them,” Vice President of

Member Benefits Kim Krueger said. “So finding the Children’s Bereavement Center was such a blessing. It turned out to be the perfect partnership.”

During the four-day session the campers took part in traditional Camp activities in addition to healing circles and other activities designed specifically to help them cope with their loss. Many had lost a mother or father, some a brother or sister, and others a grandparent.

On the first day, the campers decorated frames and placed a picture of their special person in the frame. They took turns talking about their special person and then put the picture on a table with

all of the other pictures. The pictures remained on display until the closing day.

One of the healing activities was a chance to pound out their feelings on a drum they had made themselves. The drums were actually a plastic bucket they decorated with duct tape and other materials.

One night they made floating candles and placed them in the pool. On the last night they held a dance. One day they were paid a visit by a therapy dog named Bellin.

During the day they took part in healing circles. The campers were divided into groups with each group given the name of a different type of butterfly.

On the last day they painted rocks.

During the closing ceremony, with their parents present, they placed the rocks around the base of an oak tree. The oak tree was planted near the Activity Center and amphitheater. Each year another tree will be planted and the process will be repeated until a semi-circle of trees are planted to provide shade for the amphitheater and to serve as a reminder of the special sessions that they were planted in honor of.

The children also got to take part in regular Camp activities. Some did craft projects. Others built rockets. Some took See MEMBER, Pg. 18

Group activities were a big part of the Grief Support Session but the campers also broke into smaller groups for healing circles. They got to do traditional Camp activities like building rockets and swimming. One day Bellin, a therapy dog, came to visit and offered lots of wet “kisses.” One of the last activities was a group circle (above) during which counselors and campers held hands and talked about the things they were grateful for. Many spoke about the new friends they had made and the time they had spent in their healing circles.

A time to heal

The first-ever Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life Camp gave the campers a chance to just be campers but it also gave them a chance to come together in healing circles and take part in other activities designed to help them learn to cope with the death of someone close to them. When asked at the end of the session what they were most grateful for from the session, many said they were grateful for the new friends they had made.

One night the campers made floating candles that they then placed on the Hilltop pool. On the last day, they painted rocks and then placed them around the base of a tree planted especially for the session.

On the last day of Grief Support Camp, the campers posed in the amphitheater for a group photo, left. One day, they were visited by a therapy dog named Bellin and throughout the week they had the chance to make new friends and take part in Camp activities. During their visit with Bellin they were given the chance to ask questions about death with answers provided by Kassia and Steve Fontenot.

Questions ranged from “why does someone commit suicide” to “why do we pull the plug” to “why do some people die faster than others.”

Member support makes Grief Support Camp possible Cont’d. from Pg. 15 on the Challenge Course. Everyone got to go swimming.

The session was possible because of the monetary support offered by Hermann Sons Life members and lodges. The only charge to the campers was a small assessment fee paid at the time of registration.

Otherwise, they attended free of charge.

When they arrived on Wednesday they received a stuffed animal from the Bereavement Center and a bag from the Hermann Sons Life Marketing Department that contained a beach towel and

water bottle donated by 4imprint.com.

On Thursday they received a goody bag from San Marcos Lodge and the Hermann Sons Life Student Group at Texas State University. On Friday, they each received a teddy bear donated by Vineta Lodge.

And on the last day they received a t-shirt from the Bereavement Center.

All of the cabin counselors donated their time. Although they are regular Hermann Sons Life Camp counselors they did not get paid to be at the session.

Many commented it was a meaningful experience and was the most rewarding time they had ever spent at Camp.

“It was an amazing experience,” Executive Camp Director Katie Klohn Miller said. “I have a flood of emotions knowing these children have suffered such a huge loss and that we were able to impact them in such a way. I could not be prouder to do what I have done this week.”

And while the staff from Hermann Sons Life Camp was grateful for the services provided by the Children’s Bereavement Center, that staff was equally thankful for the work of the Camp staff.

“We love you guys,” Tami Logsdon, program director for the center, said. “You guys know how to do fun.”

Plans are to have another Grief Support Session next year and maybe even expand the program and offer a session for adults.

“We want this to be an ongoing program of ours,” Vice President Krueger said. “We will be looking to our members and lodges to help us financially but the outpouring of support for his first session tells me that will not be a problem.”

The Children’s Bereavement Center staff planned to reach out to the parents after the session to offer continuing therapy services. The CBC is located in San Antonio.

Playing games, shooting hoops and making rockets - those are all regular Camp activities. The Grief Support Session campers got to do all of that. But they spent a lot of time in therapy sessions where they were given the chance to talk about their grief in a safe environment. The staff (top row, middle) from the Children’s Bereavement Center provided the therapy while a staff made up of volunteer counselors and support personnel provided the fun. Alex “Marbles” Eads, far left, and her sister Morgan Suggs were there. Alex, who works for KRIS-6 News in Corpus Christi, volunteered her time as a counselor and documented the session on video. Her sister was there as a camper. Morgan’s father and Alex’s stepfather passed away two years ago.

Cameron to honor pioneers on Sept. 12 CAMERON – Cameron Lodge held its annual catfish fry recently. In charge of cooking the fish and all the trimmings was the Ehler family, David, Jason and Chad, and Blaise Samford with desserts by Nanette Wells and Judy York.

The lodge voted to assist Nanette Wells with her entry fee in the Hermann Sons Statewide Bowling Tournament and A.J. Sandoval IV was assisted with a scholarship to attend Camp this summer.

A $50 donation was made to EMMAES, a program that delivers a free meal to those less fortunate on the fourth Saturday of the month in Rockdale.

The lodge did not meet in July because of the death of one of its charter members. Mary Jeanne Wolf was the mother of President David Wolf and several

other members. She was 89 and had lived in Archer County all of her life.

A member of the lodge attended Hermann Sons Life Camp this summer. This is the first time a member of the lodge has attended Camp in numerous years.

Lodge members and Brother Wolf, who is the lodge’s agent, are working hard to meet this year’s new member goal.

Coupland bake sale set for Sept. 9 COUPLAND – Coupland Lodge is making plans for two events in September.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, the lodge will sponsor a bake sale benefitting the Coupland Volunteer Fire Department. It will begin at 8 a.m. at the Coupland Fire Station and the Stock Up Food Mart on Hwy. 95 in Coupland.

This is the lodge’s Matching Funds event and Make a Difference Day project. The Home Office will provide matching funds

of up to $500.

The fire department will use the money for equipment training.

Bernardo to serve ice cream treats BERNARDO – Bernardo Lodge will meet Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department. It’s ice cream time. Members are asked to bring their favorite toppings. The lodge will provide the ice cream and sodas. Members are encouraged to attend.

fice and Comfort the weekend of June 23-25 as Sister Maertz completed agent training. She is now an agent for Hermann Sons Life. She reported that they visited the Retirement Home in Comfort and that she was very impressed with the facility and the residents who live there.

Myra Anderson from Lamar, daughter of Casey and Ryan Anderson and granddaughter of Terrel and Robin Maertz, attended Hermann Sons Life Camp this summer. This is her second year to attend Camp. Bernardo Lodge provided her with $50 to help pay for Camp.

Bexar Lodge will meet on Aug. 3 SAN ANTONIO – Members of Bexar Lodge attended the North West Bexar School of Dance recital on June 3. It was such a treat to get to watch the children perform.

The lodge has voted to pay the installation costs of a new mirror for the dance studio to replace a damaged one. Infinity Glass Co. donated the replacement mirror. Tori, a representative from Infinity Glass, attended the recital.

Helotes needs hall managers HELOTES – Braun Hall is coming back! The lease Helotes Lodge had with its tenant will terminate at the end of August.

Public dances will resume in October. Beginning in September, reservations can be made for 2018 events including weddings, anniversaries and class and family reunions.

A duo/team is needed to manage Braun Hall. Duties will include but are not limited to

scheduling events, maintaining inventory and the hall. Details will be released in the next issue about where to send resumes.

Sandwich artists are still needed to help support the lodge’s Make a Difference Day project.

The lodge will provide lunch for a group of Habitat for Humanity volunteers on Sept. 16. The loge will provide the items necessary to create the sandwich master-

Columbia Lodge seeking volunteers DALLAS – Summer greetings from Columbia Lodge in Dallas - the heat and heart of Texas.

As summer wears on and the heat feels like it will never pass, you can take solace in remembering that the Fall Festival at the Dallas Lodge Hall is only a few months away.

Seems like most everybody is on vacation and things are quiet at the Hall. The staff is finalizing the POS system to make the bar more modern

and to help with accounting practices. This has been a long time coming and is important to help with business in a changing environment.

The next First Friday social gathering is set for Aug. 4 at 6 p.m.

The lodge still needs volunteers to spearhead its many projects. Step right up. Volunteer. Make a difference. Make a commitment. There are plenty of places for everyone at the

Hall. Come be a part of something great.

BANDERA – Bandera County Lodge members visited the Cedar Creek Nursing facility in Bandera in observance of Join Hands Day. The residents enjoyed receiving pudding cups, flowers and books.

Schulenburg Lodge will meet Aug. 9 SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge will meet Aug. 9. Pulled pork sandwiches and ice cream will be served. The lodge meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Schulenburg Community Center. Refreshments are served at 6:30 p.m. and the meal is served at 7 p.m. The meeting follows.

Hot dogs and cookies were served at the July 12 meeting.

Cibolo hosts annual Flag Day ceremony in June CIBOLO – There’s extra news from Cibolo Lodge this month as the lodge held its regular meeting on July 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church and the annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14 at Cibolo City Hall.

The Flag Day ceremony began with President John Gray welcoming everyone. Thanks go to City Manager Robert Herrera and City Secretary Peggy Cimics for hosting the ceremony. They did an outstanding job and all of the flags that were posted around City Hall are so inspiring.

Pastor David Guion from the Country Church said an opening prayer. Leslie Swank sang the National Anthem. Junior members Javion and Michael Campos read information about what the flag stands for. Then everyone joined in to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

County Commissioner Jim Wolverton shared the Flag Day history followed by City Manager Herrera with the history of the Star Spangled Banner. Joy Brown honored veterans and service members and President Gray closed the ceremony. It was a very moving ceremony to many of the attendees and there were not many dry eyes left at the end.

Refreshments were served after the ceremony with more than 50 people in attendance.

At the regular meeting three new junior members were

welcomed. They are Hannah Ashbrook Stock, Brycen Steven Warneke and Breilyn Gail Warneke.

Congratulations go to Sherry Rakowitz on being appointed to the Grand Lodge Community Engagement Committee.

The rummage sale is set and will be held in the parking lot at Christ the King Lutheran Church beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept. 16.

The sale will benefit the Clemens 4-H. Items will be accepted up to the sale day so contact any member or bring them on the day of the event by 7 a.m.

The annual Memorial Service will be held as part of the August meeting. Melvin Katt and Canyen White will be honored.

Guest speaker Hans Boas, professor for Germanic linguistics in the Department of Germanic Studies and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, is scheculed to speak at the Oct. 5 meeting.

Pershing to hold annual memorial service Aug. 2 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will meet Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. The annual memorial service will be held that evening.

Members who have passed away during the year will be remembered. Family members of those who have passed are welcome to attend the service.

Members are asked to bring sandwiches, salads and desserts to enjoy and share with guests.

At the July meeting, a round of applause was given to the veterans in attendance.

Mike Fred Hames has transferred to Edelweiss-Magnolia Lodge.

Terri Armstrong reminded everyone that the lodge’s next outing would be an overnight trip to Delta Downs Casino on Sunday, Aug. 13. Cost will be $60 for Per-

shing Lodge members and $65 for non-Pershing Lodge members. On Sept. 22, members will travel to the Beachgate Condos at Port Aransas for the annual beach outing. Contact Sister Armstrong for information on either trip.

El Campo presents funds, scholarships EL CAMPO – El Campo Lodge will meet Friday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Best Seafood and Steakhouse.

The lodge met Friday, June 2, at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant.

Lodge President Dennis Wigginton shared information about the Grand Lodge Convention that he attended in San Marcos in May. Delegates voted on a name change and new governance structure and then elected a new Board of Directors. The delegates attended breakout sessions to learn about insurance sales, technology, upcoming projects and other topics to strengthen community through financial protec-

tion and service.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge joined with Bob Little of Rice Farmers Co-op, Donnie Roddy of R & R Printing, Golden Phoenix Restaurant and Charles Harris of Always Ready Wrecker Service to present Boy Scout Troop No. 1251 with a $500 donation. The funds will be used to support the activities the boys participate in this year.

The lodge’s scholarship recipients from El Campo High School this year were Jae Avendano, $100; Kaylyn Harp, $550; and Macey Knesek, $500. Amanda Lutringer from Louise High School received $750 and Chance Smith

from Lamar High School received $1,400.

The amount of each scholarship is based upon each recipient’s involvement in the lodge’s annual scholarship fund-raiser.

The graduates receive one-half of the funds for each semester of their first year of college.

Celebrating June anniversaries were Willie and JoAnn Bender Wendel and Amy Witcher.

Plum invites all members to Sept. 11 meeting PLUM – Plum Lodge will meet Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. The lodge’s regular meeting time is the second Monday of the month with the exception of August. All of the lodge’s 400-plus members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Otto Brauer’s daughter Roberta Hogans became a 50-year member on Feb. 6 of this year and daughter Rebecca Brauer will be a 55-year member on Nov. 1.

Brother Kassler’s wife Sharon was also present to see him receive his pin.

Gloria Nowak will reach her 50year milestone on July 2 as will Doris Thornton.

It is always nice to see our members who have been under the weather back at meetings. Linda Balmos attended the meeting and brought one of her famous desserts. Glad to see she is on the road to recovery.

San Marcos to meet Sept. 11 at La Vista Club House SAN MARCOS – San Marcos Lodge will not meet in August.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at La Vista Club House on Redwood Road in San Marcos. Fried chicken will be provided and members are asked to bring a vegetable or salad and dessert.

The lodge held its annual Family Picnic on Saturday, July 15, at the Zorn Bowling Club in Zorn.

Members enjoyed playing games for gold dollars and quarters.

Vice President of Marketing Tim Kolbe and wife Cheryl were special guests. Brother Kolbe thanked the San Marcos group for doing such a great job of greeting the delegates and guests to the May convention held at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos.

He presented a 60-year membership pin to Billy and Mary Lou Preuss, the parents of Patricia Tristan. Sister Tristan has been a member since Nov. 6, 1957.

At the July 2 meeting, the lodge welcomed seven new junior members.

Paige plans potluck for Aug. 13 PAIGE – Paige Lodge will hold a potluck lunch prior to the Aug. 13 meeting.

The Home Office approved matching funds for the Chili Supper fund-raiser in November that benefits the Loblolly 4-H Club.

President Chelle Dube gave a brief report on the Grand Lodge Convention and the Elgin School of Dance recital held May 13. She extended her appreciation to those who helped at the recital.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Halle Dube who turned 6. Her best friend, Kodi Thomas, joined her at the meeting.

Frank Bilberry won the attendance prize and Sister Basward won the dollar pot. Fredericksburg Lodge presents membership pins FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge will meet Aug. 1. A sandwich meal is planned.

The social will begin at 6 p.m. followed by supper and the business meeting. Members are asked to bring sandwiches that have been labeled along with a dinner plate and utensils.

Other special guests included Mike Beam, a member of the Hermann Sons Life Board of Directors, and his wife, Mary, who recently retired as Vice President of Operations. Brother Beam spoke briefly and then assisted with the awarding of 60- and 70-year membership pins to five of the 31 members eligible to receive pins this year.

Wilbert Ransleben of Fredericksburg received his 70-year pin. He has been a member since Sept. 2, 1947.

Comfort plans gatherings COMFORT – Two gatherings are on the calendar for Comfort Lodge in August.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, the lodge will take part in a new member event being hosted by area lodges at Hilltop Camp from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Lodge officers are asked to arrive by 10:15 a.m. to help with set up.

Postcards have been mailed to new members. There will be a sandwich lunch as well as indoor and outdoor games and a moon bounce. The pool will be open as well.

The next lodge meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 14.

The social will begin at 5 p.m. and supper will be served at

6:15 p.m. Grandparents will be recognized and are invited to bring their grandchildren to the meeting. There will be games for all ages and a small gift for the grandparents.

The lodge’s summer picnic is Sept. 10 at Hilltop Camp.

More details will be shared later.

The lodge met July 10 at the VFW Hall in Comfort. Members were served a barbecue chicken dinner provided by Connie and David Spenrath.

Gulf welcomes four new members, meets Sept. 24 LA MARQUE – Gulf Lodge will meet at 3 p.m. Sept. 24 at Kelley’s in La Marque.

The lodge welcomed four new members at the June meeting that also was held at Kelley’s. They are Cameron Ryan Ives, Piccalo T. Payne, Benjamin A. Diaz and Blake Smaistrla.

President Al Stryk announced that a $300 donation had been sent to the Camp in Comfort.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Joni Huepers who recently passed away. A donation will be sent to the Retirement Home in her memory.

Continued prayers were asked for Bill Graefe who is still in therapy.

The lodge’s 125th anniversary celebration was a big success. Everyone thanked Sarah Spencer for baking the anniversary cake.

The lodge participated in the Special Olympics in May in Dickinson. Lodge members helped present medals. Sister Spencer said the experience was rewarding and a great community service.

Scholarships were presented to Luis Manuel Ortiz, Jessica Jakes, Jacob Brumbelow, Samantha Rizzo, Nicole Rizzo, Charlie Maldonado and Cailee Morgan.

The speaker was the Rev. Richard Rhodes from First Lutheran Church in Galveston. He gave a presentation on Feed Galveston, which is a project of the First Lutheran Church. The organization packages food to be distributed to food banks in Galveston County to be shared with the food insecure in the community. He noted that 17 percent of households in Texas are hungry. Committee

member Noel Spencer helped with the presentation passing around samples of the packaged food.

Rev. Rhodes invited anyone interested in volunteering to come out to the next packaging that will be held Sept. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Members voted to donate $500 toward the project.

Door prizes went to Maria Amato, Shirley Hannes, Jacob Brumbelow, Theresa Smith, Gary Scales and Stephanie Amato.

Boerne Lodge will meet Aug. 4 BOERNE – Boerne Lodge will meet Friday, Aug. 4, at 12 noon at Kronkosky Place. Lunch reservations must be made in advance by calling the Rainbow Senior Center by 9 a.m. the day of the meeting.

The lodge met July 7 and welcomed Norma Tyler and Dr. William Samelson as guests.

Dr. Samelson is a professor, lecturer, author and Holocaust survivor. He talked about his life growing up in Poland during the invasion of the Nazi army.

Kathy Kunz was welcomed as a transfer from Fredericksburg Lodge. Sister Kunz recently received her 60-year pin. She has been a member since May 1, 1957.

Genevieve Sengler was welcomed as a new junior member.

Shelby members to gather for social, games Aug. 13 SHELBY – Shelby Lodge members will gather Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. at Harmonie Hall for games and conversation. Members are asked to bring sandwiches, sweets and chips.

Members enjoyed ice cream and other snacks at their after meeting social on Sunday, July 9. The meeting was held in the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department meeting room.

Henley Baker and Goldenelse Baker were welcomed as new members.

Members are asked to nominate someone for the Humanitarian Award. Weldon Klaus is the chairman of the committee that will make the final decision. Include the reason your nominee quali-

fies for the award when contacting him or another officer.

The lodge will recognize its membership pin recipients for 2017 on Sept. 10. A social will begin at noon with the program beginning at 12:30 p.m. The meal will be served around 1 p.m. Those who received a special invitation are asked to make a reservation.

Celebrating birthdays were Milroy and Patsy Krebs, Flora Marek, Oscar Voelkel and Weldon Klaus.

Spring Branch will meet Aug. 20 SPRING BRANCH – Spring Branch Lodge will meet Sunday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the Knibbe Ranch, 10006 Spring Branch Road. Membership pins will be presented and there will be plenty of food and fellowship. Members, new and old, are invited to attend along with their guests.

Vice President Sharon Knibbe presided at the May 21 meeting because President Sandra Duncan was attending the two recitals held by the Hill Country School of Dance that day.

New members Liz Wilson and Cathy Scrivner and guest Merle Scrivner were attending their first meeting.

Three new junior members were welcomed that day.

Sister Knibbe gave a report on the Grand Lodge Convention she attended in May including information on the name change to Hermann Sons Life.

Corpus Christi to meet at Chicken Shack on Sept. 4 CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi Lodge will meet Sept. 4 at The Chicken Shack in Corpus at 6:30 p.m.

The lodge met July 3 at Nolan’s Steak House in Corpus Christi with 25 members present. Ida Blankenship was elected financial secretary. Jo Ann Hood had served in that position for many years but decided to resign so she could focus on her health.

The 50/50 winner was President Frank Brandon.

A silent auction will be held.

Proceeds will benefit the schol-

arship fund.

Members and guests are asked to bring canned goods for donation to the Victoria Christian Assistance Ministry.

Pin recipients will be honored along with scholarship recipients and any campers who are in attendance.

A dance will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, from 8:30 p.m.-midnight with music by The Red Ravens.

Kirby Lodge to donate to Fisher House KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. The lodge will provide the meat and members are asked to bring side dishes and/or desserts. The lodge did not meet in July.

The lodge is planning upcoming events and community service projects.

In observance of Make a Difference Day in October, Community Coordinator/Agent Judy Schulmeier is coordinating a donation to the Fisher House.

She has a list of items that are needed. The average price is $20.

Call her at 210-667-1938 to get the list. If you already have your items to donate, bring them to the August meeting.

In October the lodge will serve a catered meal in honor of its anniversary. All Kirby Lodge campers are invited to attend to share their stories, art and pictures about Camp. There also will be a memorial table to honor those who have passed away during the last year. If you would like your loved one honored, bring a photo for the memorial table. Reservations are needed

for this meeting.

In December, the lodge will once again make donations to Boysville. Boysville serves children, girls and boys, ranging in age from newborn to 18. Any item is welcome. All donations should be brought to the lodge hall on later than the Dec. 3 Christmas party.

A copy of the 2017-2018 schedule is available at any meeting.

The lodge has several events planned for the year and all members are welcome to attend.

Mission-Alamo to meet at Hilltop Camp Aug. 19 SAN ANTONIO – The focus of the June Mission-Alamo Lodge meeting was honoring the men and fathers of the lodge for Father’s Day. Each received a gift of appreciation and recognition for all they contribute to the lodge and their families during the year.

Everyone enjoyed a meal of roasted pork loin furnished by Joyce Kneupper along with an array of side dishes and desserts.

In keeping with the theme, most everyone came sporting their Hawaiian attire. Games rounded out the evening’s entertainment.

Four new junior members were welcomed. They are Elaine Maria Zarazua, Cutler Jase Vosburg, Tristan Leonard Dixon and Addison Marie Dixon.

Members mourn the passing of Margaret Hopper. She became a member Sept. 26, 1962, and had reached her 89th birthday.

A thank-you note was received from the Home Office for the lodge’s continuing support of “Hugs From Home.”

Members of a Trail Life USA group attended the June meeting of Giddings Lodge and gave a presentation in honor of Flag Day.

Giddings observes Flag Day in June GIDDINGS – June was another busy month for Giddings Lodge.

A Home School group and their parents from Bastrop accompanied members Pat Abell, Loretta Chilek, Charlie Harmon, Landon Harmon and Brenda Potter when they delivered cards to the residents at Oakland Manor Nursing Home and Giddings Rehabilitation and Residences. They visited with friends and members currently residing at those facilities.

More than 40 members and guests attended the June meet-

ing. The Trail Life USA group started the meeting with a flag ceremony and gave a presentation on the way to fold a flag and proper disposal of used ones. The stars are removed and given to veterans. After being burned, the ashes are buried in a secret location.

Also in attendance were the lodge’s scholarship recipients.

Hanna Kipp and Elana Ledwik talked about their future plans.

Several door prizes were awarded and Agent Loretta Chilek was presented with a

bouquet of flowers in recognition of her accomplishments this year.

Jerry Potter, Charlie Harmon and Blake Harmon prepared a meal of hamburgers, hot dogs and fried chicken. Members brought sides and everyone was treated to ice cream cones for dessert.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month beginning at 7 p.m. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Vineta Lodge to donate school supplies SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will meet Aug. 3. President Debbie Jordan is providing the surprise meal. The regular meeting will follow the meal and then games will be played. Members are asked to bring school supplies to donate to the local children’s shelter.

Kerrville to meet at Acapulco Restaurant KERRVILLE – Kerrville Lodge will meet Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Acapulco Restaurant, 1718 Sidney Baker, Kerrville. This will be a social event. Everyone is responsible for their own meal and drinks.

President Tony Straube and Vice President Scott Shoemaker presented a flag to the Hill Country Veterans Center in observance of Flag Day. This organization provides assistance to veterans in the Hill Country including food, clothing and help with VA benefits.

Poth welcomes five new members POTH – Poth Lodge met July 2 and welcomed five new members. They are Kaya Lynn Drew, Damarcus James Scott, Jadyn Darius Scott, Jaxon Carter Scott and Cotton Wyatt Mahler.

Members were reminded that online dance registration is under way.

Members also were reminded to contact Lucille Novak at 830391-6500 if they know of someone who is need of get-well wishes.

Elizabeth Cutsinger had a suggestion for a program at a future meeting. Some U.S. Army medic instructors are willing to demonstrate how to stop bleeding. She noted in a rural community like Poth it is important for all citizens to know how to remain calm and

help someone with this problem.

Further discussion was held regarding the stage and chair/ table stands and the lack of space in the lodge hall. Lawrence Maha said he would contact a contractor about what could be done with the limited funds the lodge has available.

Door prize winners were Amanda Foote and Elizabeth Cutsinger.

The names drawn for the kitty were Christopher Ogburn, Lorene Krebs and Andrea L. Richter.

They were not present so the pot will be increased by $2 for the drawing next month.

Hot dogs and sauerkraut with potato salad and several desserts were devoured and then members played games.

Marion holds Family Bowling Party MARION – Marion Lodge held its Family Bowling Party June 15 at the Marion Bowling Club.

Everyone enjoyed the bowling, pizza, drinks and fellowship.

The lodge presented a gift to Morgan Kunde, a 2017 graduate of Marion High School.

Morgan will be attending the University of Texas but right now she is in Italy as part of a Rotary Exchange Program.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church’s Fellowship Hall in Marion.
