Healing Hearts SAN ANTONIO – For more than 155 years, Hermann Sons members have supported each other and the communities in which they live. They have been there when a member is mourning the loss of a loved one and they have been there supporting community causes with fund-raisers and volunteer hours. These are two of the principles upon which Hermann Sons was founded. Now Hermann Sons wants to bring those founding principles together in a new focused service cause – grief support. Grand Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger explained that by identifying grief support as a focused service cause, the Grand Lodge, local lodges and members will be able to concentrate their efforts on providing grief support to others and to supporting organizations that provide grief support services in Hermann Sons communities all across Texas. “Hermann Sons has a strong presence in our communities and we are only getting stronger,” Sister Krueger said. “Hermann Sons lodges, individual members and the home office are doing all kinds of good and covering a lot of ground in a lot of areas to assist many communities. By focusing our efforts on grief support we can make an even greater impact on our hometowns. When asked what we do, we will now be able to tell people we strengthen community and one of the ways we do that is by providing grief support to members and our communities.” Steps have already been taken to put the focused service cause into action.
First, information on grief support services can be found on the Hermann Sons website. Anyone looking for grief support can go to www.hermannsons. org and click on Benefits, then Community Service. There they will find information about hospice organizations and grief support groups that already exist all over Texas. Second, plans are under way for a Grief Support Camp that will be held next summer at Hermann Sons Youth Camp in Comfort. The half-week session will run from July 5-8 and will be open to children, members and non-members, ages 6-17. Volunteer program staff and licensed therapists will work together to make this a special stay for children who have lost a loved one. “There will be a detailed application and screening process for campers who want to attend this Grief Support Camp session to ensure we will be able to provide each child with a healthy and healing experience,” Sister Krueger said. “While we will expect each child to pay a small portion of the cost, our goal is to make the camp session as inexpensive as possible for those attending. To help cover costs, we will be conducting fund-raisers and encouraging lodges to consider giving to this cause.” Plans are to extend this service in the future by providing weekend retreats for adults suffering from a loss. And, finally, lodges are encouraged to make grief support part of their community outreach program. See FIRST, Pg. 7
Dance registration under way online SAN ANTONIO – Online registration is now under way for the 2016-2017 dance year. Registration information has been mailed to all eligible junior members who live in the areas where the 32 existing schools of dance are located. The brochure gives detailed information on how to log in to the Hermann Sons website to complete registration. A complete list of schools also is included in the brochure and can be found on the website. Because the Hermann Sons Dance Program is a benefit of membership, there is no monthly tuition fee. Each school of dance charges a one-time registration fee. Dancers are responsible for the cost of costumes but fund-raisers are held to help offset that cost. See DANCE, Pg. 9

Grand President's Message Engaging members through Leadership Summits Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek and I will be giving an Innovation Forum presentation at the American Fraternal Alliance annual meeting next month in Nashville. Our topic is how we are using brand and engagement to set Hermann Sons’ strategic direction. One of the innovations we will be sharing is how we will be using Leadership Summits as a new engagement tool. Next month, these first-ever ambassador seminars will bring Hermann Sons closer to members across the state. Lodge officers, committee members and agents will join Grand Lodge officers and staff in an informative exchange of innovative strategies that will increase our presence throughout the state and prepare us to better serve the next generation of Hermann Sons members. What does this mean to the average Hermann Sons member? It means that the home office, sales force and your local lodge officers are working to make sure Hermann Sons continues to be relevant throughout the state and of service to our members and communities. Topics to be discussed include ideas on how to sharpen your ambassador skills and elevating the quality of lodge gatherings. We will also be sharing proposed governance changes that will enable all of this and more to happen. Part of being a local Hermann Sons leader is developing a clear understanding of why we exist and being able to articulate that message to others. Our purpose of serving communities, enriching lives and offering security should be con-
veyed to others in one clear voice. Vice President-Secretary/ Treasurer Mary Beam, Communications Director Kathie Ninneman and Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek will demonstrate how the Hermann Sons brand and message can be articulated to all. Each participant will leave this session with a message map and sharper ambassador skills. Next, Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe and Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger will be sharing ideas about elevating the quality of lodge gatherings. From special social events to community service opportunities to business meetings, Hermann Sons has something for all members. Together ambassadors will learn how to articulate these opportunities to all members. During this session ambassadors will learn about a new local lodge governance plan and our new focused service cause will be explained. And finally, Vice President-Investments Harry Werland and I will be discussing proposed laws changes that will come before the delegates of the upcoming convention in May. We will explain the regulatory changes and other considerations that led to governance review. Around 400 Hermann Sons ambassadors have been invited to join us in one of four different cities. Through this we keep our name familiar and share the importance of who we are and what we represent. As a life insurance company, we care about youth, family and community. Up-to-date information is available at your fingertips. We also have added a new website link for reporting a member’s passing. Several lodges have portals on the website that offer information on their activities, photos of current events as well as community service undertakings. General subjects of interest are offered through a blog post that changes periodically on our website. These posts are written by officers and staff members on day-to-day activities and offer inspiring and educational messages. STATE BOWLING TOURNAMENT The 52nd State Bowling Tournament held in Austin this year included some non-members as participants and some additional teams. Tournament results are now posted on the website. Congratulations to the winners and hope to see you next year. At the opening ceremony of the tournament, Past Grand President Leroy Muehlstein was bestowed the honor of being inducted into the Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament Hall of Fame. As an avid supporter and participant of the tournament for many years, he is very deserving of this honor. Congratulations! MEETINGS The Grand Finance Committee has completed its semiannual audit of the books and records of the Grand Lodge for the period of Jan. 1 through June 30, 2016. The Grand Committee held its quarterly meeting on July 28 and the minutes of this session are included in this issue. Hermann Sons Leadership Summit invitations have been sent to lodge presidents, agents and committee members. Select the location that works best for you and come participate in educational sessions that offer great information. Summer is ending. How can that be? In this month’s Marketing News we want to introduce to our members the 2016 spokesperson for Life Happens, a life insurance education organization of which Hermann Sons is a member. Life Happens spokesperson Danica Patrick is a race car driver and has set several records for female drivers, including becoming the first woman to lead the Indy 500 and the first woman to win the pole position at the Daytona 500. She is the most successful woman in the history of American open wheel racing, and now sets her sights on success on the NASCAR circuit. Danica shares some of her life story with Life Happens, and stresses the importance of family life insurance protection. all means my first racing experience did not go well. When did you first get life insurance – or at least consider it? It was an easy decision for me to get life insurance at a young age. I participate in a risky sport where I drive 200 miles an hour with concrete walls around me. Plus, I’ve been fortunate to have a successful career from the beginning, and I want my family to be looked after if something were to happen to me, especially since my parents sacrificed so much for me to get where I am. But going a bit deeper, both my parents lost their dads when they were teenagers, and neither had any life insurance. My mom was one of five kids, and remembers that her mom had to sell most of the farm off as a result. When my sister and I came along, my parents got life insurance. They wanted to make sure, based on their experience, that we would be taken care of if something happened to them. That certainly stuck with me. People might be thinking, “Well, I’ll never be racing at Talladega. I don’t need life insurance.” Granted, my situation is unique. Most people don’t drive race cars for a living, so I think it’s probably easy for them to put off getting life insurance. You think you have time. You’re not expecting anything to happen, but it can. A good friend of mine in racing just lost his car chief to a heart attack at 34 years old. That’s crazy. Bad things can happen. That’s just life. And that’s why life insurance is just an easy and smart way to eliminate a risk from your life.
I also think there’s a misconception that only the primary breadwinner needs life insurance. The other partner may be doing the cooking and cleaning, running the kids around and all sorts of things that help the family operate. If something happens to them, those things still need to be done, and there might not be enough time in the day for the other half to take care of those things or the money to hire someone to do it. So it’s smart for both to have life insurance. What’s it like to be a woman in a male-dominated sport? It’s challenging to answer that because that’s all I’ve ever been, but what does it mean? It means anything is possible. It means you’re only as good as your goals and your aspirations. So, shoot for the stars and land on the moon! That’s my plan. We all want to know what you’re like behind the wheel when you’re just driving down the road. Well, I have to admit, I’m pretty aggressive on the regular road. I’ve been told I need to take that aggression from the road to the racetrack more often. So I’m practicing that! It’ll pay off a lot better in my job. Any parting advice? When it comes to life insurance, think about it this way: If you were to pass away, it’s going to be awful for those left behind. There are people who are going to mourn and suffer – perhaps financially as well, and whatever you can do to make that transition as easy as possible is the kind thing to do, the unselfish thing to do.

They are Alayna Menzer from Adkins and a member of Louise Schuetze Lodge No. 3, Chris Stoeltje from Needville and a member of Rosenberg-Richmond Lodge No. 85 and Katrina Wiatrek of Jourdanton and a member of Jourdanton Lodge No. 310. “I want to welcome these new agents to the Hermann Sons Marketing Team,” Brother Kolbe said. “They are ready to provide insurance services while adding new members to our Hermann Sons family.” Alayna Menzer has been a member of Hermann Sons since she was just 4 years old. She also serves as secretary of the Parents’ Club for the Cibolo School of Dance. She and husband Dustin have been married for nine years and have two children. Jake is 9 and Kamryn is 6. AUSTIN – The 52nd annual Hermann Sons Statewide Bowling Tournament was held July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7 at Dart Bowl in Austin. The tournament started off with a bang. Thanks go to Grand Vice PresidentSecretary/Treasurer Mary Beam for presenting a check from the Grand Lodge and throwing out the first ball. Sister Beam has been bowling in the tournament for years. It was an honor to induct Past Grand President Leroy Muehlstein into the Hall of Fame. Brother Muehlstein has bowled in the tournament and supported it for many years. He started bowling while serving as Grand President and continued even after he left office. He is the one who started the tradition of the Grand Lodge supporting the tournament financially. This helps with expenses and increases the prize fund. Brother Muehlstein was not able to bowl this year, but he and his wife Linda were there to support the other bowlers and the tournament. This was the first year nonmembers were allowed to bowl - one per team if needed. There were 17 non-members bowling. Hope to hear that some of them will join. Nonmembers will be allowed to bowl next year as well. This year there were 34 teams, which was two more than 2015. Thanks go to Austin Lodge No. 120 and its members who volunteered both weekends. The location of next year’s tournament has not been decided. Team captains need to watch for entry forms in the mail next year that will include some of the changes made at the meeting. Thanks also to those bowlers who signed up to bowl with people they did not know just so another team could be filled.

Join Hands Day projects earn lodges recognition SAN ANTONIO – Local lodges have completed their Join Hands Day projects for 2016 and are being honored with a Certificate of Achievement based on the type of project they did. There are three levels of awards – Gold, Red and Black. The Gold Level is for lodges that had 26-50 volunteers from the lodge and community members working together to organize an event to benefit the community. The Red Level is for lodges that completed a project but with fewer volunteers than those that were hon-
ored at the Gold Level. The Black Level is the donation level for those lodges that donated money and/or non-perishable goods. “I am excited to say that the number of lodges that received the Gold Level Award was up significantly from last year,” Grand Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger. “All of our lodges are to be commended for the projects they completed – no matter at what level. We are so proud of the spirit of giving that are members demonstrate each year through the Join Hands Day program. Keep up the good work.”

Grand Committee Meeting Minutes - July 28, 2016 Grand President/CEO Allan Preuss called the Grand Committee meeting to order on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. in the Grand Lodge Home Office. Several comments were made with suggestions for some redesign. A motion was made by Grand Finance Committee Member Janice Kuhen to approve the new logo with slight modification to the helmet. Grand Finance Committee Member Jack Larned seconded the motion. Motion carried. Sister Cernosek spoke about the series of blogs that will introduce the branding process and the effect that will have on how we engage with members and non-members. Grand Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger reminded the Grand Committee that at its last meeting they had approved grief support as our new focused service cause. Since that time we have worked on a link for our website where members can go to find grief counseling in their own cities. She also reported that just that week she, Executive Camp Director Katie Klohn and Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek had visited El Tesoro De La Vida Grief Camp in Granbury to gain information on its program for children who have experienced loss and were attending that organization’s week-long grief camp. She suggested that our camp could offer a half-week session such as this and open up a similar grief counseling camp for children in the community. The next step would be to plan for a weekend retreat for adults who have lost a spouse or a child. The grief support focused service cause and grief camp will be introduced to ambassadors at the Leadership Summits planned for September and October. A motion was made by Grand Finance Committee Member Sandra Jones to pursue the grief camp for next year. Grand Finance Committee Member Paul Heath seconded the motion. Motion carried. Minutes of the April 24-25 meetings had been sent to Committee members prior to the Grand Committee meeting. Past Grand President Leroy Muehlstein made the motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the previous session and approve the minutes as presented. This was second-
ed by Grand Finance Committee Member Wilburn Pargmann. Motion carried. Grand President/CEO Preuss reported on the Leadership Summits scheduled for September and October. He spoke on the topics to be presented, which include local lodge governance, introduction of the new focused service cause, Grand Lodge Laws revisions and an agent-only session. An update was given on the Stained Glass Restoration Project noting that more than $10,000 had been raised. The American Fraternal Alliance will be holding its annual meeting in September and Grand President Preuss is up for nomination to a threeyear term on the Board of Directors. He and Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek will participate in an Innovation Forum at the meeting. Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland gave highlights of the Enterprise Risk Management meetings with other officers, department heads and several employees to determine and assign risk priorities and process accordingly. The Board of Directors application and selection process was reviewed by Committee members. It was suggested that a paragraph be added that would establish the procedure for the election of the chairman of the board by the Convention delegates. There was a 10-minute recess called, followed by discussion of the proposed Charter and Laws revisions. Minor changes to the Laws were suggested by Committee members for better sentence structure and clarity. A discussion followed on the election of the chair of the Board of Directors by the Convention delegates and a suggestion to have an additional law stipulating a rule for removal of a Board member from office. A motion was made by Past Grand President Steve Prewitt that the Grand Lodge Laws changes and revisions be approved as discussed, that an additional law be added for the removal of a Board member from office and that the chairman of the Board of Directors be elected to a four-year term by the Convention delegates. This was seconded by Grand Finance Committee Member Jones. Motion carried. The Committee recessed for lunch at 1 p.m. and reconvened at 1:50 p.m. In reviewing the Board of Directors Application and Selection process, it was questioned why Committee members already in office should go through the vetting process. Discussion followed and it was decided that all candidates for office should be vetted. A review of the Board of Directors application process was given to include discussion of core competencies and other required documents for candidacy. It was suggested that candidates should be introduced the first evening of the Convention. A motion was made by Grand Finance Committee Member Jones that all the procedures for the Board of Directors Application and Selection process be approved as presented. This motion was seconded by Grand Finance Committee Member Larned. Motion carried. Grand President Preuss complimented the Grand
Committee for approving the changes that are necessary to improve our organization. He stated that these steps took courage on the part of Committee members. Grand Vice President Werland reviewed the Grand Lodge Investment Policy with Committee members. He spoke on assets versus liabilities and the concern of the lasting effect of low interest rates. He stated that a change to the investment policy could limit us but companies are going towards the purchase of BBB bonds. A motion was made by Grand Vice President Werland that the Executive Committee, under the Investment Policy now in effect, be allowed to purchase non-financial corporate or municipal bonds with a rating of Baa1 or Baa2 by Moodys or BBB+ or BBB by S & P, all of which must be on a positive or stable rating by at least two of the applicable rating agencies. Total purchases of these rated securities will not exceed $300,000 for each issuing entity or an additional $2,500,000 over the next year ending in July of 2017. A second was made by Past Grand President Muehlstein. Motion carried. Grand Vice President Werland noted that the mortgage loan interest rate will remain at 5.25 percent. He also informed Committee members that an exemption on property taxes for the Retirement Home and Youth Camp were granted for this year. The financial statement for the period of April 1, 2016, through June 30, 2016, was reviewed. For comparison purposes, figures from previous years were noted and report of a good first six months was given. The annual outside audit prepared by Calhoun, Thomson + Matza, LLP of Austin was completed and showed no unusual discrepancies. Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer Mary Beam gave her Operations Report. She indicated that a new link to report a member death had been added on the website. Claim forms may be provided to family members also on the website, thus allowing for a quicker payment process. She spoke on a survey that is being included with a surrender form to alert the Home Office of reasons for a surrender. An employee training session was held recently to introduce the new program on the Premium Deduction Option for Flex Life Policies and a program has started to notify members holding certificate loans by sending reminders on the importance of remitting the annual interest on the loan and making payments on the principal balance. Tentative plans for the 47th Grand Lodge Convention were presented with discussion on new committee formats and other plans for programs and educational segments for delegates. She mentioned that the Organization Board would meet on Oct. 4 to determine the number of delegates to which each lodge is entitled. Attendance was slightly less this year with 2,021 campers attending. Maintenance will continue with painting and roofing improvements after the camping season. She mentioned several upcoming dates of fraternal activities. The Shannon Gaffney Scholarship Fund bowl-a-thon was to be held on Aug. 6 in San Antonio. The Camp Alumni annual event will be held on Oct. 22. Both dance officer and dance teacher workshops have been held and registration for dance classes for the 2016-17 year began online in June. She reported that the Future Club event at Schlitterbahn was successful and 461 people attended. From the Join Hands Day event held on May 7, $4,000 was donated to Children’s Advocates of San Antonio (CASA). She noted that the Join Hands Day lodge awards will be announced shortly and that the annual State Bowling Tournament will be held in Austin on two weekends (July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7.) Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe gave his report. He spoke on production results for the last two quarters and that more agents are writing business. Ten new agents have been trained with more scheduled for training after the interview process. An Annuity Certification class was held at the Home Office on June 4 and 24 agents attended. The illustration software will go into effect Aug. 1, 2016, and resource tools are available to agents. The membership campaign continues and information on this is placed in all communication with members. Information was available for non-members at the dance officer workshop and recently a recommender drawing was held for top recommenders throughout the state. Eighty-five of our lodges have added new members to their membership rolls this year. A motion was made by Grand Finance Committee Member Kuhen to approve the 2016 local lodge subsidy based on membership figures as of Dec. 31, 2015, in the amount of $2 per adult member in good standing and $2 per junior member in good standing. This was seconded by Grand Finance Committee Member Larned. Motion carried. Members may enroll in any school of dance they choose and are eligible to attend one class per week. Each school teaches varying degrees of tap, ballet and
jazz. Parents also will be able to order a dance shirt for their children during registration. The shirt has “Hermann Sons Dance” printed on the back. For the second year, classes are being offered for adult members in certain areas. Fourteen of the schools of dance will offer classes for members who are 18 years of age and older who are in good standing. The schools of dance that will offer adult classes this year are Boerne, Comfort,
Corpus Christi, Devine, Ganado, Goliad, Karnes City, La Vernia, Lone Oak, San Antonio, Schulenburg, Seguin, Stockdale and Yorktown. Adults who want to register and who have a child who is eligible to dance, can use the same login information they received for their child. Otherwise, they will need to call the Grand Lodge Fraternal Department at 1-800-2344124 (outside San Antonio) or 210-226-9261 (inside San Antonio) for login information so they can register.

Golfers to raise money for Camp Discovery SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge No. 1 is looking for golfers who want to play for a good cause. The 23rd annual Bob Worrick Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, and will once again be played at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio. The tournament benefits Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children with cancer. The tournament is named in memory of Harmonia Lodge member Bob Worrick, an avid golfer and tournament organizer who lost his battle with cancer in 1994. The lodge decided in 1995 to hold an annual

golf tournament for an organization that helps those afflicted with cancer and Camp Discovery has been the beneficiary since that time. Golfers can take part in the tournament by paying their $95 entry fee, which will cover their greens fee, cart and range balls. They will receive a goodie bag and awards luncheon and have a chance to win door prizes. Throwsies and Mulligans will be for sale the day of the tournament. If they score well enough players can win team prizes and other contest prizes. They also can bid on the items being offered in the silent auction. Harmonia Lodge is the sponsoring lodge for
the annual tournament. The presenting sponsor is once again Wells Fargo Bank. Jack and Dianne Larned are sponsors for the awards luncheon that will follow the tournament. diabetes can bring about changes in vision Diabetes affects 23.6 million people in the United States. While diabetes can be accompanied by many different symptoms, some people are surprised to learn that diabetes can affect the eyes and vision. Changes in vision are sometimes the earliest warning signs of the presence of diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetic eye disease is its
Medical Notes own stand-alone condition, and the National Eye Institute points out that diabetic eye disease comprises a group of eye conditions that affect people with diabetes. These
may include retinopathy, macular edema, cataracts and glaucoma. All forms of eye disease can potentially cause severe vision loss or blindness. Those with diabetes also can experience xanthelasma, or yellowish collections of cholesterol around the eye area. What’s more, diabetes can put individuals at risk of developing conjunctival bac-
terial infections (pink eye), as well as corneal erosions, corneal defects and subsequent dry eyes. According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are at a 40 percent greater risk of suffering from glaucoma than people without diabetes. The longer someone has had diabetes, the more common glaucoma is. Diabetics also are 60 per-
cent more likely to develop cataracts. Vision checkups and care are an important part of living with diabetes. Routine eye examinations can head off potential vision problems and have been known to alert doctors to the presence of diabetes before patients know they have it. Shelby will honor pioneers SHELBY – Shelby Lodge No. 28 will honor its 50-year and 60-year pin recipients on Sunday, Sept. 11, with a noon meal at Harmonie Hall located on FM 389 in Shelby. Seven members are receiving their 50-year pins and 11 are receiving their 60-year pins. Invitations will be sent to these members. At the August meeting, members discussed a new procedure for selecting the Humanitarian Award recipient. The procedure was presented by Vice President Wendell Rudloff and approved by the members in attendance. Anyone wishing to nominate someone for the award should contact a lodge officer with the information as
to why the person is worthy of the award. A committee will select the Humanitarian Award recipient. That person will be recognized at the December meeting. Celebrating birthdays were Roy Pieper and Delton Wunderlich. Judy and Roy Pieper also celebrate their anniversary this month. dilated eye exam, eye doctors will examine all areas of the eye to check for illness. Pressure on the eye will be tested, as glaucoma can cause elevated pressure. The doctor also will check for any clouding of the eye lens. When an eye is dilated, doctors can examine the retina at the rear of the eye. Points that will be checked include: • changes to blood vessels, including any leaking blood vessels or fatty deposits • swelling of the macula • damage to nerve tissue • health of the retina, and whether there are any tears or detachments While many of the vision
loss problems associated with diabetes are irreversible, early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness by 95 percent, advises the NEI. Controlling diabetes slows the onset and worsening of visual symptoms. People with diabetes may need to see their eye doctors more frequently and have a greater number of dilated exams to ensure eyes are still in good health. To keep diabetes in check, follow a doctor-recommended diet, monitor your bloodsugar levels and get plenty of exercise. Eye doctors and primary care providers can work together to ensure that all symptoms of diabetes — whether visual or otherwise — are treated effectively.

Siemering Lodge to meet at The Station Sept. 13 SAN ANTONIO – Siemering Lodge No. 32 will meet at The Station on South St. Mary’s Street on Sept. 13. The 2017 San Antonio Home Association representatives will be elected. Members are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite school. The annual memorial service was part of the August meeting. Katherine Hess and Augusta Fite lit candles in memory of the 24 members who died during the past year. Sister Hess announced she is retiring as an agent. Members were invited to support Anton Wenzel Lodge No. 174’s Crispy Chicken Taco dinner on Sept. 9. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost is $5. And a letter was received from Harmonia Lodge No. 1 about the annual Bob Worrick Memorial Golf Tournament coming up on Oct. 1.

Hondo lodges plan joint Family Night HONDO – Hondo Victory Lodge No. 161 and Hondo Lodge No. 236 will hold their annual combined Family Night barbecue and picnic on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Hondo Lodge Hall. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Hondo Victory Lodge members discussed their duties for this event when they met Aug. 9. Members are asked to bring a dessert unless they have been assigned another duty. Aurline Tschirhart, Ouida Samford and Verlie Nietenhoefer were assigned to the Christmas Committee. The party will be held Dec. 14 at the Hermann Sons Steakhouse. Members are encouraged to make plans to attend these upcoming events..
Grace Schmidt reported receiving a thank you note from Stephanie Zinsmeyer, one of the recipients of a graduate gift from the lodge. Betty Newman thanked everyone for the expressions of sympathy she received following the loss of her son, Joe Pleasant. The “Hugs from Home” donations were collected and sent to the Home Office. The lodge also met July 12 at the Hermann Sons Lodge Hall. Welcomed as a new member was Reilly Jean Dyall. Stockdale holds recital
The Stockdale School of Dance presented its recital May 7. The theme was “Life’s Lessons.” Stockdale Lodge No. 316 President Ronald Wiatrek led the crowd in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and gave the opening prayer. Ed Kurtz, a member of the Youth Activities Committee, and wife Betty were special guests. Brother Kurtz spoke briefly. Instructor Summer Rice introduced each of the dancers. The finale was performed to “Footloose.” Parents’ Club officers this past year were Charlotte Vigil, president; Debbie Johnson, vice president; and LeeAnn Drzymala, treasurer.
Edelweiss-Magnolia plans fun night in September HOUSTON – EdelweissMagnolia Lodge No. 47 hosted an ice cream social on July 23 at the SPJST Hall. Activities included a cakewalk, arts and crafts, a large Jenga game for the older children and a water slide. And, of course, there was ice cream. Members of the Waltrip High School girls’ soccer team and their coach volunteered. Plans are already being made to have the ice cream
social again next year. The next meeting will be a fun night on Sept. 20. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. A German band will play music for everyone’s dancing and listening entertainment. A German meal will be served. Reservations need to be made no later than Sept. 12 by calling Anna Larie Keith at 281259-6337 or 713-819-8853. An outing is being planned for October. New Braunfels will meet Sept. 4
NEW BRAUNFELS – New Braunfels Lodge No. 21 will meet Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall. The lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. At the Aug. 7 meeting, the lodge welcomed 30 new junior members and two new adult members, Justin and Brandi Norton. Alfred Stremmel III was welcomed by way of transfer. Thank you cards were read from Project Graduation Co-op 2016 for the donation,
from the family of Dennis Ullrich and from scholarship recipient Brittany Malik who will be attending Texas State University to study finance. She thanked the lodge for the scholarship opportunity and said she enjoyed meeting everyone and the games party. A resolution of respect was read in memory of Dennis Ullrich and Jerome Schubert. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ora Lee Benton for July and Dorothy Eickmann, Jolene Meuret, Ryan Huebinger and Martha Tolle for August.

The CIT program offers past campers educational and leadership experiences, preparing them to be the future leaders at Camp and in their communities. It is an advanced camper program, which offers participants a leadership curriculum, a mentoring phase and exciting activities. To be eligible to apply, individuals must be a past HSYC camper, a current member of Hermann Sons and they must turn 15 as of Sept. 1, 2017. Eligible applicants will be invited to an interview camp in November.

Celebrating 10 years of service at Camp this summer was Hunter “Papa Bear” Miller who is pictured with Executive Camp Director Katie Klohn and Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek. During his time at Camp, Papa Bear has worked as a junior counselor, counselor, senior counselor, assistant director and director, all at Hilltop Camp. During the school year, Papa Bear teaches fourth grade science in the Cy-Fair ISD at Sadie Woodard Elementary School.

All of these staffers are members of Hermann Sons and are continuing the tradition of returning to Camp to work after completing their years as campers.
Brothers Clay “Ton” Bendele, left, and Cole “Eloc” Bendele worked together for one week this summer at Camp. Ton volunteered for a week as a counselor and Eloc was a senior counselor at Hilltop.
Sisters Jessica “Webster” James, left, and Kristen James worked as counselors at Riverside Camp this summer. Both will be attending Texas A&M University in College Station this fall. When asked what she liked about being on staff with her sister, Webster answered, “It was nice to work with someone I’ve known for so long and see her take on new challenges every day.”
Hannah “Worm” Kelley and Rhett “Rodeo” Kelley both worked at Camp this summer. Worm had previously been a junior counselor in 2013, but she knew she wanted to come back to Camp this summer to work with her brother. Worm will be entering her junior year at Tarleton State University and Rodeo will be going to school in Kansas on a rodeo scholarship.
Abiud “Elmo” Rodriguez and Anaelli “Slam” Rodriguez spent a part of the summer working at HSYC. Elmo was a junior counselor at Hilltop and Anaelli was a counselor at Riverside. In the fall Slam will be attending Texas A&M University for her freshman year and Elmo will be finishing his senior year at John Jay High School.
Sisters Ashlyn “Lucky” Chambers, left, and Dakota “Double Take” Chambers worked on staff together for their second year as Riverside counselors. Both Lucky and Double Take spent a majority of their summer at the Climbing and Challenge classes. Lucky said, “It was really cool to teach classes together because we easily work together as a team and can have a lot of fun. This year everyone kept mixing us up so we just went with it and started wearing matching clothes. Camp already feels like a big family but it sure is nice having that extra support system close by!”

Macdona to honor membership pin recipients ATASCOSA – Macdona Lodge No. 198 will cool down summer during the Thursday, Sept. 8, meeting. It begins at 6 p.m. in the Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church Parish Hall, 11150 Macdona Lacoste Road, Atascosa. Two 50-year members will be honored. They are Carol Grothues of Dripping Springs and Pamela M. Rath of San Antonio. Members will enjoy cool salads. The lodge will provide various items for salads and members are asked to bring their favorite cold salads, such as pasta salads, veggie salads, fruit salads, chicken or ham salads, egg, tuna or taco salads. in exercise science. She will play on the UTSA Lady Roadrunner softball team. Victoria Gatlin graduated from Southwest High School. She played the flute in the SW Band all four years of high school where she also served as band librarian and flute section leader. She was a member of the top wind ensemble and had the opportunity to play on the stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City her senior year. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. She plans to attend Stephen F. Austin University where she will major in communication science and disorders and minor in autism. – Reporter
Houston to elect convention delegates in October HOUSTON – Houston Lodge No. 100 is planning a surprise supper for the Sept. 12 meeting. No one knows what it will be but rest assured it will not be lobster and rib-eyes. The meeting will be held at the Sokol Hall, 1314 Patton, Houston. Fellowship begins at 6 p.m., the meal will be served at 7 p.m. and the
meeting will follow at 7:45 p.m. Members are asked to bring a dessert. The lodge welcomes new junior member James Schuler. Junior members who attended summer camp are invited to attend a meeting and talk about their experiences. Members are reminded
that the election of delegates to the 2017 Grand Lodge Convention will be held at the October meeting. If you are eligible to be a delegate and you cannot attend the meeting, contact lodge President Gary Falkenberg. Brenham Lodge plans fall dance BRENHAM – Brenham Lodge No. 6 members gathered July 8. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Calvin Lehde. A thank-you note was read from the local hospice and from Sheriff Otto Hanak for the $500 donation received. A get-well card was mailed to Nelson Randermann. Sympathy cards were mailed to Clarence Gerke following the passing of his brother, Floyd; to Paul Kenjura following the passing of his brother-in-law, Floyd Gerke; to Veradell Lehde following the passing of her husband, Calvin Lehde; and to Raymond Blum following the passing of his brother-in-law, Calvin Lehde. After some discussion, members voted to have another dance in October but no meal will be served. A drive-through dinner was held July 31. Gerald Wehring, Nina Runge and Shirley Ganske prepared the hamburger meal served prior to the meeting. There were 54 members in attendance. – Reporter

Plum Lodge welcomes new member PLUM – Plum Lodge No. 238 met June 13 and welcomed Adam Landry Bertsch as a new member. Grilled hamburgers were served in honor of Father’s Day and Flag Day. Charleen Koopmann gave a reading about the flag reminding everyone of how proud Americans are of their flag. Walter Wessels presented some history about the former Hermann Sons lodge hall. Genelda Stahmer reported sending get-well cards to Leo Janda and Ruth Wessels. Birthday celebrants in attendance were Verlene Hobratschk, Leo Janda, Weldon Meinen and Ruth Wessels. Those celebrating wed-

Giddings Lodge plans dinner to mark dedication of hall GIDDINGS – Representatives of the Lee County School of Dance were special guests at the July meeting of Giddings Lodge No. 54. Parents’ Club President Ashley Myers and teacher McCally Chadwick were in attendance. Teacher Jennifer Hightower was unable to attend. These leaders were commended for all the work they put into the dance program this past year. Brenda Potter presented photos from the parade and of the girls with the third place trophy the float received. The lodge received photos of the dance classes to display in the trophy case. Plans are under way for the Sept. 11 Fried Chicken Dinner that will mark the dedication of the hall 50 years ago. All members are encouraged to be a part of this celebration. Volunteers are needed to help with
food preparation and serving. Door prizes, prize drawing items and desserts are needed. Cecilia De La Rosa spoke about the Back to School Outreach being hosted by the First Assembly of God on Aug. 13. The church needed $1,500 to buy supplies so members approved a $150 donation. Correspondence received included a thank you note from St. Margaret’s Relay for Life Team/Jean Herzik who noted that since the Lee County Relay for Life began 16 years ago more than $1 million has been raised. The St. Margaret’s relay team has led the way, raising
more than $100,000. Also received was acknowledgement from the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life for the monetary gift from the lodge. Get-well cards had been sent to Arthur Urban and Ricky Ebner. A sympathy card was sent to the family of Gladys Saegert. A card of cheer was sent to Willie Mae Meyer. A moment of silence was observed for the family of Billie Langehennig. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Jean Herzik who celebrated her birthday last month. Attendance awards went home with McKalie Chadwick and Cecilia De La Rosa. Fredericksburg hears about program for disabled FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge No. 41 will meet Tuesday, Sept. 6. The lodge will furnish the barbecue for the evening meal. Cuero Family Lodge plans cookie swap for Sept. 6 CUERO – Cuero Family Lodge No. 82 will meet Sept. 6 at the American Legion Post beginning at 6 p.m. Members are asked to bring cookies for a cookie swap. The back-to-school drive has been extended through the September meeting so please remember to bring a few new school supplies to the meeting. Members gathered for a regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the American Legion Post. Meetings were not held in June and July because there was no place to meet. During the months of June, July and August, the

Sister Krueger spoke briefly and then presented a 70-year membership pin to Richard Steinhauser. Brother Steinhauser has been a member since May 6, 1946.
Also at the meeting, one new member was welcomed into the lodge. The lodge was scheduled to sponsor a Papa John’s pizza fund-raiser on Aug. 24 with proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Fort Worth Lodge juniors attend summer camp FORT WORTH – Several members of Fort Worth Lodge No. 33 attended Hermann Sons Youth Camp this summer. Madison Lewallen spent two weeks working at Riverside Camp as a junior counselor and lifeguard. She has already made plans to work four weeks next year. Madison is in her senior year in high school and is excited about preparing for college. She has not made a final decision about which college she will attend. Her brother, Preston Lewallen, was attending Camp for the fourth summer. He was happy to meet up with his Camp friend, Dalton Stanley from Canyon Lake. They were bunkmates. This was the third year they have attended Camp at the same time. They both plan on applying to the Counselor-inTraining program in the future. Preston will be in the seventh grade and is looking forward to being on the swim team. Caden Jones was attending for the first time. He couldn’t stop talking about how much

Members and guests enjoyed a Chinese gift exchange dressed in their finest red, white and blue in honor of Independence Day. A traditional Fourth of July meal of hot dogs, sal-
ads, beans and desserts was served. Transferring into the lodge are Charles E. Hilbig, Joan M. Hilbig, Pamela Ann Hilbig and Haley C. Hilbig. A “thinking of you” card was signed and mailed to Bernice Vogel who is having health issues. The progressive pot worth $200 was not claimed because neither Katherine

Bernice Lunn was reported on the sick list. Copies of the new rules and regulations for renting the lodge hall were distributed. Members agreed to buy a new refrigerator for the hall. The other half goes to “Hugs from Home.” During the September meeting, pioneer members will be honored and the lodge will conduct its Make A Difference Day project. Spring Branch hosts Grand President, campers SPRING BRANCH – Spring Branch Lodge No. 127 will meet Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Bulverde Community Center beginning at 2:30 p.m. Members gathered July 17 at the Knibbe Ranch and welcomed Grand President/ CEO Buddy Preuss. He presented 70-year membership pins to Mildred Bartels, a member since Sept. 29, 1946, and Chuck Knibbe, a member since March 19, 1946. Grand President Preuss talked about the Leadership Summits scheduled for September and October. Attending will be lodge officers, committee members and agents. Campers Ty Schaeferkoeter and Caitlyn Stade reported about their experiences at Hermann Sons Youth Camp this summer. Both had a great time at Camp and both received awards for various events. Twenty-two new junior members were welcomed. Carmen Rittiman reported sending a sympathy card to the family of Curtis Bremer. Chuck Knibbe reported that the Oregon trip was a huge success with 26 people enjoying the trip. Bill Woody commented that it was the best trip he and his wife, Mary, had been on so far. He said all of the trips that

Womack Lodge pioneers receive membership pins CLIFTON – Womack Lodge No. 135 will serve a covereddish meal at the Sept. 4 meeting. It begins at 5 p.m. Grand President Buddy Preuss attended the Aug. 7 meeting. He highlighted some of the ongoing and future plans for Hermann Sons. He then presented pins to four pioneer members. Joyce Dreyer, a member since April 3, 1956, received her 60-year pin. Three members received their 70-year pins. They are Mildred Conrad, a member since March 2, 1946; Walter Prescher Jr., a member since
Oct. 8, 1946; and Nadine Rueter, a member since March 7, 1946. Other members receiving 60-year pins include Jo Ann Brannan, a member since March 8, 1956; Oscar Hampe, a member since Sept. 2, 1956; Sandra Martin, a member since Oct. 18, 1956; Rodney Rueter, a member since March 10, 1956; and Darrel Spenrath, Floyd Spenrath and Ronnie Spenrath, all members since April 1, 1956. A report was given on the June 25 Matching Funds Fish Fry benefiting the Clifton
Volunteer Fire Department. The event was a huge success with approximately 470 people served. A thank you goes out to all who helped in any way and especially to those who attended. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Mildred Conrad and Eleanora Zuehlke who celebrate August birthdays. Dallas meets with Columbia to discuss consolidation DALLAS – Dallas Lodge No. 22 will hold a business meeting on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Dallas Hall. Hope to see lots of members in attendance. The Merger-Consolidation Committee has met. Representing Dallas Lodge on the committee are Eva Day, Clint and Terri Holmes and Steve Schellenberg. They met with representatives from Columbia Lodge No. 66 for the first time on July 30. They discussed what action would be in the best interest of each lodge and reviewed
the options available through the local lodge bylaws. Committee members agreed that a merger was not the best option. They agreed that consolidation was a better option. Through consolidation, members of both lodges would become members of a new lodge. The adult members of both lodges will have to vote on this and a 2/3 majority is needed for approval. The Grand Lodge also must approve the consolidation. For more information or to express your opinion on

He wants to survey members in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to find out why they are not active. He added that the survey might encourage them to become active. Brother Schellenberg also reported mailing 33 birthday cards to members. He received a thank you note from the Grand Lodge for
the donation made to the Retirement Home in memory of Dorothy Simon. And he won the attendance prize. President Andy Schellenberg reported two trustee position need to be filled. This will be addressed at the next meeting. Thanks go to Clint and Terri Holmes and Columbia Lodge members who removed many layers of paint from the wood in the meeting room. The wood will be stained like the wood in the main hallway. They also removed the old
carpet over the concrete to the stairs and old bowling alley. This saved the Home Association money. The Home Association had contractors remove the old tiles over the concrete in that same area and is researching the possibility of polishing and staining the concrete. The church group that uses the hall on Sundays is replacing the old hot water heater. This water heater supplies the downstairs restrooms. Members appreciate their generosity. – Reporter
Paige makes plans for anniversary PAIGE – Paige Lodge No. 154 will meet Sept. 11. A sandwich potluck meal is planned. At the July 10 meeting, plans were made for the 120th anniversary celebration set for Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Paige Community Center, 107 South Main in Paige. A barbecue chicken and sausage lunch will be served at 11 a.m. Cost is $8 per plate. Music will be provided from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a prize drawing will be held. The Elgin School of Dance will sell
desserts for 50 cents each. Everyone is invited to help the lodge mark this milestone. Prior to the meeting, everyone enjoyed grilled hamburgers. Thanks go to everyone who donated items for the lunch and to Ronnie Harmon and Frank Bilberry for doing the grilling. Comfort to host barbecue Sept. 11 COMFORT – Comfort Lodge No. 2 is planning some fun and exciting activities for the fall. On Sunday, Sept. 11, the lodge will host its annual barbecue at Hilltop Camp starting at 3 p.m. Swimming will be taking place from 3:30-5 p.m. so bring your swimsuit. Students will be able to meet the Comfort School of Dance teacher at 5 p.m. The meal will be served

Dunlay celebrates birthday
Dunlay Lodge No. 285 members Sherrie Beralek, Lynette Stewart and Dolly Meyer attended the party given for Nora Balzen as she celebrated her 101st birthday. Nora was born on Aug. 7, 1915, and has been a member of Dunlay Lodge since Dec. 12, 1952. Sister Balzen lives at the Community Care Center in Hondo where she takes part in all the activities. She especially enjoyed dancing to the music performed by local musician Ronnie Mason at her birthday party held at the Center. Nora loves playing the card game Pitch, which she excels at, every Wednesday afternoon with these three members and Dorothy Graff, another resident of the Center and a member of Hondo Victory Lodge No. 161.
Seguin holds Summerfest SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge No. 37 celebrated its 125th anniversary on Aug. 14 in conjunction with the annual Summerfest. The lodge met July 20 and welcomed two new members, Riley Elizabeth Pickett and Abigail Emmalee Smith. Members extend sympathy to the family of junior
member Bethany Bertling, who passed away on June 19. Bethany was 6 years old. Zachary David Miller would have won the progressive pot but he was not present so the amount of the prize increases to $85 for the next drawing. – Reporter

Harmonia Lodge to honor past presidents Sept. 8 SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge No. 1 celebrated its 155th anniversary on July 14. David Goerke of Circle G Catering catered the meal. President Bill Richard recited the Pledge of Allegiance in German after which everyone recited it in English. There were approximately 60-70 members and guests present. Harry Werland reminded members that the Bob Worrick Memorial Golf Tournament is coming up on Oct. 1 at The Republic Golf Course. Proceeds from this annual event benefit Camp Discovery, a camp for children with cancer. Volunteers are needed to help on the day of the tournament. Sons. It was the first lodge and is the third largest lodge in the state. Members mourn the passing of Herbert Rummel Jr., age 69, who passed away May 12. He had been a member since 1952.

DACOSTA – Members of DaCosta Lodge No. 265 observed Flag Day on Tuesday, June 14, at the VFW Hall in Victoria. They were joined by members of Catholic Union of Texas and Catholic Family Fraternal and various military organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. After the flags were raised, the Pledge of Allegiance
was recited and “God Bless America” was sung. A moment of silence was observed and then the VFW Post commander recited a prayer. After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed coffee, juice and doughnuts. The lodge’s next meeting will be held Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. –Reporter

Anton Wenzel will meet Sept. 6 SAN ANTONIO – Anton Wenzel Lodge No. 174 will meet Tuesday, Sept. 6. Spaghetti and meatballs are on the menu. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Members enjoyed a fried chicken dinner at the August meeting. to the Retirement Home in Comfort. The residents had a good time and sent a letter thanking everyone for the visit. The lodge will hold a garage sale Oct. 8. Donations for the sale are being accepted and volunteers will be needed that day to help with set up. Arrangements can be made to have donated items picked up. The annual Crispy Chicken Taco Dinner will
be held Friday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost is $5 for two tacos, beans and rice. Tickets are on sale. Monetary donations and volunteers are needed. Bexar moves meeting to Oct. 30 SAN ANTONIO – Bexar Lodge No. 306 has set the date for the next meeting. It will be held Oct. 30, a week early due to hunting season. At the Aug. 7 meeting, members planned the Christmas party scheduled for Dec. 3. Members also discussed the lodge’s 100th anniversary
celebration in January 2017. Two new members were welcomed. Donations will be made to the USO, HHV and “Hugs from Home.” Cake was served in honor of those celebrating birthdays in August, September and October.

Coupland Lodge to host guest speaker COUPLAND – Coupland Lodge No. 113 will meet Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Coupland Fire Station beginning at 2 p.m. A representative of the fire department will be a guest speaker. Rutersville Lodge plans potluck meal for Sept. 7 RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge No. 152 will share a potluck meal at the next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 7. Members are asked to bring a main dish, a side dish and a dessert. At the Wednesday, Aug. 3, meeting, plans were made for the Sept. 24 Chicken and Sausage Barbecue. Members are contacting the This Is It Band and an auctioneer. Adult plates will costs $9 and plates for children under the age of 12 will be $4. Serving time will be from 5-7 p.m. Plates-to-go also will be sold. The lodge will give away four free tickets on the La Grange and Columbus radio stations. Austin Lodge moves next meeting to Sept. 11 AUSTIN – Austin Lodge No. 120 will meet one week later than usual in September because of the Labor Day holiday. The meeting is Sunday, Sept. 11. The lodge will provide pizza and salad. Members are asked to bring desserts. Two new members were welcomed at the Aug. 7 meeting. The Cheer Committee reported sending a get-well card to Holly Wood and Louise Duecker. President Ed Kurtz reminded members of upcoming events in the lodge including the election of officers, the
selection of the Humanitarian Award recipient and Make a Difference Day. Buster Schafer reported on the State Bowling Tournament held in Austin. Austin Lodge hosted the tournament. Brother Schafer thanked all those who volunteered. A special thanks goes to Mary Shugart and Billy Lindsey for donating bowling balls and bags that were given away in a drawing. Shining Stars
BEVYN KING is a member of Pershing Lodge No. 160. She is in prekindergarten. Her favorite food is a grilled cheese sandwich and her favorite TV show is “Paw Patrol.” Bevyn has a pet dog, Sadie, and a pet cat, Colby. Her activities include playing with bubbles, puzzles and coloring.
KIMBALL CURNUTT is a member of Columbia Lodge No. 66. He is in fifth grade. His favorite food is Little Caesar’s Crazy Bread and his favorite TV show is “Gravity Falls.” Kimball has a pet dog, Mila, a pet cat, Kirby, and a snake. His activities include kickball, baseball, swimming and zombie tag.
