Three awarded Camp scholarships

Three former campers have been chosen to receive the 2016 Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarships.

They are, from top, Callie DeWinne, Sabrina Hamm and Zane Grey. To read more about these students, turn to Pages 15-17.

Kick-off event held for restoration project A fund-raising effort has been launched to restore the stained glass window depicting Hermann the Cherusker that is featured in the ballroom of the San Antonio Home Association Building in downtown San Antonio. A kick-off party was held April 8. Among those in attendance was the grandson of the woman who painted the window. Her name was Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp. His name is Andrew Slimp and he is pictured here with Grand President Buddy Preuss, right. For the complete story, turn to Page 13.

Grand President's Message Our agents are the cream at the top I don’t remember drinking store-bought milk until I started elementary school. It seems growing up we always lived near a dairy and mom and dad would take wide-mouth jars to purchase unpasteurized milk. When I wanted a glass it was necessary to stir down the cream that always rose to the top.

My dad would ladle the cream into a bowl, add molasses and eat it with toast. He thought it was the best part.

Yes, there is an analogy in this story. This past weekend Elizabeth and I were invited to the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet to celebrate the top producers of 2015. These life insurance agents are the “cream” of the crop.

I had dinner Friday evening with a group of agents including Newcomer of the Year Mary Koenig, a member of Hochheim-Prairie Lodge, who achieved award-winning agent status her very first year as an agent. I celebrated with Marlin Tanneberger of La Vernia Lodge, Glenford Boehme of Castroville Lodge, Teresa Saathoff of Prinz Solms Lodge, Carol Krauss of Pershing Lodge and Gary Falkenberg of Houston Lodge who received Last Agent Standing Awards for continuous sales. And during the awards banquet I was honored to dine with the Outstanding Agent of the Year, Teresa Saathoff, who finished the year first in all three production categories.

Congratulations not only to our award-winning agents, but all of our agents for their dedication. They are a caring team that focuses on their clients and provide sound financial advice.

Our agents focus on customer service. And I don’t mean customer service just to make a sale. Our agents understand a sale is not something you pursue; it’s what happens when you are immersed in serving your customer.

Our agents demonstrate the highest level of energy and eagerness to meet the financial needs of their clients and their families. They want to help you protect those you love.

Hill Country dancers donate ‘Hugs’ SAN ANTONIO – More donations have been made to the “Hugs from Home” program.

Among the latest contributors were the Hill Country School of Dance students. The students donated bags full of items that can be put inside the boxes. See photo at left.

The latest list of monetary donors includes Karnes City Lodge No. 215, Henrietta Fenner, Houston Lodge No. 100, Mission-Alamo Lodge No. 80, Cuero Family Lodge No. 82, Jocie Jacob and McGregor Lodge No. 132.

"Hugs from Home"

Students from the Hill Country School of Dance recently donated bags full of items that will be sent to men and women serving overseas through the “Hugs from Home” program at the Grand Lodge.

Hours are 9 a.m.-12 noon.

The Rathskeller once again open to public SAN ANTONIO – The Rathskeller bar located on the bottom floor of the San Antonio Home Association Building in downtown San Antonio is once again open to the public.

Many Hermann Sons members have fond memories of the bar on South St. Mary’s Street and the committee appointed to get it reopened is hoping that members and non-members who live and work in the area will support it.

A soft opening was held April 8 in conjunction with the Stained Glass Window Restoration fund-raiser sponsored by the Grand Lodge to raise money to restore the historic stained glass win-

dow depicting Hermann the Cherusker that is in the ballroom of the Home Association Building.

The bar has been decorated with old photographs from past events at the building, including Hermann’s Happiness, dance recitals, meetings and more.

Patrons can now enjoy a pool table and dartboard, which have been placed in the back room just like in the old days.

Furnishings include the original domino tables as well as tables from the bowling alley, which were sitting unused.

The Grand Lodge also donated some vintage couches that

had been in the basement. The carpet underneath the bar has been taken out and replaced with wood.

Visitors seemed to enjoy the décor. “Like a 1950’s time capsule it was,” wrote one of the locals on Instagram who visited the bar for the first time.

“But the beer? Cold and delicious. Just like it should be.”

The Rathskeller will be open on weekends, Friday and Saturday, from 5-10 p.m.

Because of the increase in pedestrian traffic in the area from the two hotels and a new condominium project, the Home Association Board is considering opening the bar during the week.

‘Hugs from Home’ event . . . . . . Seguin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . May 7 Seguin Lodge No. 37 is joining hands with Stern Lodge No. 143, the Seguin American Legion Post and the Naval JROTC from Seguin High School for a Join Hands Day event. From 9 a.m.-12 noon the public is invited to drop off items that can be donated to the “Hugs from Home” program. Personal hygiene items (razors, socks, baby wipes, foot powder, etc.) as well as snacks (jerky, granola bars, sunflower seeds, candy and gum) are some of the items needed. The location is the American Legion Hall on Kingsbury Street in Seguin.

Luncheon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dallas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . May 22 Dallas Lodge No. 22 will host a luncheon for members and their guests at 1 p.m. at Spring Creek BBQ, 12835 Preston Rd., south of the LBJ intersection, in Dallas.

Spring brings with it opportunities for outdoor activities including lodge events. Picnics, special outings, baseball games, golf and bowling tournaments, museum visits, community service ventures – they all blend into our wonderful lodge system and what it offers. Get involved and enjoy some of your lodge activities. Meet and greet some great people who are Hermann Sons members and don’t forget to take advantage of every opportunity to tell people you come in contact with about our great organization and what it means to you.

Congratulations go to our top-producing agents for their good work in 2015. An awards banquet was held in their honor recently in League City, located just outside of Houston.

Some 23 agents were recognized for their outstanding production and sales ability. Good luck to all of you in the year ahead.

In just a few days, lodges will be busy with their Join Hands Day projects. May 7 is the official date and, as always, lodges are serving communities throughout the state. Be sure and send your photos for publication in the newspaper. Lodges can get new ideas for service projects through these postings.

Don’t forget to include junior members. They can be those extra helping hands you need.

Flag Day is also another fraternal activity that brings a display of patriotic spirit throughout lodge communities. Lodges are encouraged to hold a Flag Day ceremony on June 14 or at the June lodge meeting. Many lodges host a special Flag Day ceremony with other organizations and may include public officials and community leaders.

There is still time to register for Hermann Sons Youth Camp.

Online registration makes it easy to complete the process.

Don’t wait; popular weeks fill up quickly. The summer sessions include a shortened week for eligible campers who would like to enjoy Camp just for a few days.

Dance recitals are being held currently through June in our dance communities. If you have a chance, try to attend one of these special performances. For more information on locations, check our website. Our junior members are proud of their accomplishments and want you to enjoy their exciting shows. Thanks go to all who help make our schools of dance so popular including our parents’ club officers, dance teachers, parents and grandparents, too.

May brings flowers as the verse goes, but also it brings us another beautiful day to honor our dear and special moms.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Hermann Sons moms.

Bowling event set for Austin AUSTIN – The 52nd Annual Hermann Sons State Bowling Tournament will be held in Austin this summer. The tournament will be held the weekends of July 30-31 and Aug. 6-7 at Dart Bowl, 5700 Grover, Austin.

For the first time this year, teams will be allowed to use one non-Hermann Sons member.

The rules for the tournament are listed here.

1. At least three members of the team must be a member of Hermann Sons as of July 30, 2016. Only one non-member per team is allowed.

2. Non USBC bowlers may pay an affiliate membership fee of $20, which will provide high score recognition.

3. Handicap is 90% from 220 for each bowler per event.

4. IMPORTANT - READ CAREFULLY: It shall be each bowler’s responsibility to determine that the submitted average is correct. Failure to use the correct average shall disqualify the score if submitted average is lower than correct average thereby resulting in a lower classification or more handicap.

Prize winnings shall be based on the submitted average if it is higher than the correct average. However, corrections in averages may be permitted up to the completion of the first game of a series.

Every entry blank must have each bowler’s highest USBC Certified 2014-2015 book average based on 21 games or more at the time of participation in the tournament.

Bowlers not having a 20142015 average must use highest 2015-2016 book average based on 21 games. Bowlers not having a 2014-2015 or 2015-2016 book average must use 2016 Summer average of nine games or more in one league at time of participation.

Kick-off held for window restoration project SAN ANTONIO – A total of $1,850 was raised during the Stained Glass Window Restoration Kick-off on April 8.

The goal of the project is to raise $10,000 to restore the stained glass window depicting Hermann the Cherusker that can be found in the Hermann Sons Home Association Building.

“Just as importantly, awareness of the history of Hermann Sons was raised within the community and groups of individuals came together in support of the restoration of a piece of Hermann Sons and San Antonio history,” explained Member Engagement Director Jennifer Cernosek.

During the party, attendees purchased local beer and wine, listened (and sang along with) the Beethoven Maennerchor and Damenchor and visited with one another.

Two of stained glass window artist Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp’s grandchildren were in attendance and they visited with members about their grandmother and her art.

Andrew Slimp addressed the crowd saying that his grandmother would have been very pleased with the event.

“For many of us, the best part of the kick-off party was seeing so many different people come together – Helen’s grandchildren, Beethoven Maennerchor and Damenchor members, lodge members who meet at the Home Association Building, Grand Lodge officers and staff members, friends and family, one of Lara Vineyard’s owners and her sister, a university professor interested in our heritage, prospective members and so on,” explained Sister Cernosek.

The Rathskeller had a soft opening the same night and many of the attendees to the kick-off party also visited the bar. “There was a sense of pride in the air. Pride in our history, pride in renewing spaces where cherished memories have been held and pride in Hermann Sons,” Sister Cernosek added.

SAN ANTONIO – A second fund-raising event is being held at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24, to raise money for the restoration of the stained glass window depicting Hermann the Cherusker at the Hermann Sons San Antonio Home Association Building. It will be a Riedel Tasting in the Hermann Sons Home Association Ballroom hosted by Harmonia Lodge No. 1 Riedel Regional Territory Manager Chris Hillin will talk about how varietal-specific Riedel stemware impacts the smell and taste of wines.

Participants will get to take home the four crystal glasses used during the tasting that are valued at $114.95.

Three of the wines being featured, Texas 51 Blanc Du Bois, Caro-Lina Rose and a cabernet sauvignon, are from Lara Vineyard. It is the only winery actually located in San Antonio. Owners Michael and Rachel Lara’s two boys were campers at Hermann Sons Youth Camp and Rachel was a nurse for several summers. Michael, Rachel and their sons are a 100% Hermann Sons Family.

They will be talking about their winery and the wines during the event. Texas 51 is very special because 51

percent of it is made from grapes harvested in their estate vineyard. Their first plantings were in 2008.

Caro-Lina Rose is named for each of their mothers and it was a favorite selection of many of the attendees at the Restoration Kick-off party.

The fourth wine will be a chardonnay from Pilot Knob Vineyard out of Bertram. The oaked chardonnay glass will really highlight its characteristics.

Hors d’oeuvres will be served and a silent auction will be held. Some of the auction contributors so far are Lara Vineyard, Pilot Knob Vineyard, The Republic Golf Club, Spring Hill Suites by Marriott, Freetail Brewing Co., Stray Grape Urban Winery, Cottonwood Wine Tours, Vineyard Photography, Lick Honest Ice Cream and New Braunfels Brewing Company.

Three former campers chosen to receive scholarship COMFORT – Three former campers have been selected to receive this year’s Hermann Sons Youth Camp-Shannon Leigh Gaffney Scholarship.

This year’s recipients are Callie DeWinne, a member

of Pershing Lodge No. 160; Zane Gray, a member of Cibolo Lodge No. 147; and Sabrina Hamm, a member of Corpus Christi Lodge No. 34.

There were numerous applications submitted for the

$1,000 scholarships. High school graduating seniors submitted applications, reference letters, their scholastic records and essays about how being a Hermann Sons camper helped to shape the

people they are today.

four years and served as the head clarinet section leader this past marching season. In addition, she has been an active member of the Future Farmers of America organization at O’Connor High School and participated in and placed in several competitions.

Part of her essay included this life lesson: One of the most important things that I learned at Camp was how to make friends. My first two years at Camp I went with a few friends and my sister, however, they all either got too old to attend Camp or too busy to attend, this left me going to Camp not knowing a soul.

The most terrifying thing to feel as a kid is a feeling of loneliness. I was afraid that for an entire week I was going to be completely alone, but boy was I wrong.

I learned that many other girls were there alone too and that they, too, were just as scared as I. These girls and I quickly befriended each other and had the best week of our summers at Camp.

I went from this shy, timid child who could not even ask a worker at a restaurant for some ketchup, to a young girl who walked right up to a person, introduced myself and started a conversation.

Acquiring this skill has helped me become the outgoing person I am today. I became a head band clarinet section leader who spoke to and taught 40 people because I had the confidence from Camp to exit my comfort zone.

I lead a 600-plus student organization at school as one of 10 officers in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization at Sandra Day O’Connor High School. I speak in front of these students and interact with them to help them enjoy their four

Zane Gray, son of Gail and John Gray, is a senior at Samuel Clemens High School. He plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio to study engineering with the intention of becoming an electrical engineer.

Zane has been a member of the bowling and baseball teams throughout high school and has received numerous awards and honors. Zane is an active participant in his local lodge and he has sung the National Anthem at the Cibolo Lodge No. 147 Flag Day festivities since the age of 7.

In part of his essay, Zane reflected on his time at Camp and the valuable lessons he has learned as a camper and counselor: Hermann Sons Youth Camp greatly influenced the person that I am today. Being in an environment with the most positive people in the world helped me understand that it is okay to be funny, crazy and absolutely ridiculous and most importantly that it is okay being yourself. It also made me into a leader by having great role models as my counselors to look up to. I always thought of them highly and wanted to be like them someday.

I was blessed when I turned 16 and was accepted into the Counselor-in-Training program. I attended both years of this program and then applied and got accepted into the Junior Counselor program.

I never would have imagined that one day I would get to live the dream I had always had as a camper and become that leader, role model and individual that has the chance to impact kids’ lives in such an awesome way.

While being a counselor, I got to see the other side of Camp I never got to see as a camper. I was now “delivering

the experience, not receiving it.” Being able to interact with complete strangers that look up to you as their role model as you are getting to teach them life experiences,

Counselors made impact on former campers Cont’d. from Pg. 16 experienced for my campers.

Working at the Camp is a lot of fun, but as a counselor the biggest reward is seeing the campers’ smiling faces, hearing their laugher and watching them grow each session.

Sabrina Hamm, daughter of Kim and Lance Hamm, has two siblings and lives in Kingsville. She attends Bishop High School and plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will study education with the intention of becoming a teacher. Sabrina has been an active participant in several school organizations including HOSA, National Honor Society and DECA. In addition, Sabrina is active within her church and this year she taught religion education classes to first graders at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church.

In her essay, Sabrina reflected on her first experience at Camp and how Camp has influenced her decision to study education in college: Of course I did not always love the idea of Camp. The first time I went to Camp I was scared of leaving the safety of my home and my parents. Camp was the first time that I did not depend on my parents to do everything for me. Being at Camp taught me how to take care of myself. I learned how to write and mail a letter, how to dress myself, do my hair, and many other things. At Camp I became more mature and more independent. I learned in life, things will not always be handed to me. To get something accomplished, I have to put in the work and the effort myself.

The counselors were the main reason why Camp was so fun and exciting. They were my role models as a camper. They were never afraid to be themselves. I

think this is what Camp is all about. Camp is a place where campers and counselors can be who they are without fear of being cast out or rejected.

Everyone is accepted.

Before Camp I was extremely shy and I was afraid of what other people thought about me. However, by going to Camp, I learned that I will not go very far in life pretending to be something I am not. I learned to embrace who I am and not be afraid to be myself.

The counselors did more than teach me to be myself, but they taught me who and what I wanted to become.

The counselors were always compassionate and motivating. I remember one day in volleyball class I got some stickers stuck in my foot and a counselor carried me all the way to the nurse’s office (on the other side of Camp).

The counselors were my heroes and I wanted to be just as compassionate and helpful as they were. I was inspired to become a counselor and help campers like they helped me.

Being a counselor, I realized my real passion was helping and teaching children. I was inspired to pursue an education degree in college. I believe that if I had not gone to Camp, I might have never discovered this passion.

The scholarship fund was created and named in memory of Shannon Leigh Gaffney, a former “Best Camper” award recipient and former counselor at Hermann Sons Youth Camp. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 21 with leukemia. She is remembered for her vibrant personality and the impact she made on children and other staff members.

The next fund-raiser for the Scholarship Fund is a Bowl-a-Thon scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6,

at Oak Hills Lanes in San Antonio. For more information about the Bowl-a-Thon

Hermann Sons Comfort Lodge HSYC Campership Application 2016

This application is for children who need financial assistance in order to attend Hermann Sons Youth Camp. The application can be completed by a parent/guardian, but the short answer portion should be completed by the child.

The Hermann Sons Comfort Lodge camperships pay half of the camper fee ($112.50 is half of the fee for the full-­‐week session and $75 is half of the fee for the half-­‐week session). Nine camperships are awarded to Comfort Lodge members in good standing and one campership is awarded to any Hermann Sons member in good standing. The camperships being awarded to Comfort Lodge members are awarded on a first-­‐requests-­‐received basis and there is no application deadline.

The campership awarded to any member is based on application evaluations by the Campership Committee and the application postmark deadline is May 4, 2016. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they were selected by May 11, 2016.

Campers who receive camperships from Comfort Lodge may still complete the online application but will need to mail their payment along with the check from Comfort Lodge.

and brightest of agents’ LEAGUE CITY – Twenty-three Hermann Sons agents were honored for their production in 2015 during the annual Agents’ Awards Banquet held Saturday, April 16, in League City at the South Shore Harbour Resort.

Ten agents qualified for the Grand President’s Club, another nine earned membership in the Executive Club and four were named to the Million Dollar Club. A complete list of the agents who qualified for each club can be found on Page 19.

The banquet was the highlight of a weekend trip to the bay area for the agents and their guests. On Friday night everyone boarded the Royal Princess II for a four-hour dinner cruise.

They were greeted by a pirate (aka Agent Brad Klein) as they boarded the yacht for the trip that featured a fajita dinner and drinks. Fun pictures were taken with pirate props.

On Saturday, the agents were free to explore the area on their own. Several visited the Kemah Boardwalk while others visited the NASA Space Center and other nearby attractions.

After drinks that evening, everyone gathered in the banquet room for the meal and awards presentation. Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland delivered the invocation.

Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe spoke first. He noted that Hermann Sons agents wrote more new members in 2015 than in 2014 and generated more premium income than the year before. He reported that almost 91 percent of Hermann Sons agents had production in 2015. The agents honored at the banquet wrote more than 50 percent of the applications in 2015. That amounted to more than $700,000 in premium income or 73 percent of total premium income generated in 2015.

He told the agents, “your determination and drive to succeed have gained you the right to be called the best and brightest of Hermann Sons agents. Tonight we celebrate your accomplishments and show appreciation for your hard work and production.”

And, he added, “Your success has encouraged others to also seek success. You truly are the shining stars which light the way for others.”

He concluded, “We strive to be competitive in the fraternal industry and we have the will to succeed. With your continued help and dedication, our Order will make great strides among our fraternal brethren, and move us to the forefront of our peers. This is our dream; this is our mission. I deeply appreciate you all.”

Grand President Buddy Preuss then addressed the group, likening the agents in the room to the cream that rises to the top of the milk.

He applauded the agents for their efforts, giving a special pat on the back to the three agents – Teresa Saathoff, Gary Falkenberg and

Carol Krauss – who have written at least one application every month for the past 84 months or seven years. He also gave special recognition to Mary Koenig, a new agent from Yoakum who qualified for the Grand President’s Club in her first year as an agent, and to Special Representative Teresa Saathoff who finished the year in first place in all three production categories - number of applications written, premium income generated and volume of insurance sold.

He also noted that Hermann Sons is moving forward with new programs that should help agents in their sales efforts especially when it comes to communicating with members.

At the end of the evening, a drawing was held and four agents went home with an extra $50 in cash. They were Mary Koenig, Sandra Duncan, Marlin Tanneberger and David Wolf.

Joining the agents for the weekend were members of the Grand Committee. Besides Grand President Preuss and Grand Vice President Kolbe, in attendance were Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland and all five members of the Grand Finance Committee, Chairman Janice Kuhen, Jack Larned, Paul Heath, Wilburn Pargmann and Sandra Jones.

About Sister Golla, Brother Kolbe said, “Many times during the year, I receive remarks from members who compliment Alice on her friendly and caring demeanor when either greeting visitors or answering the phone.” He also noted that Sister Golla recommended the most new members in 2015, a comment that earned her a round of applause from the agents.

On Friday night of the Agents’ Awards Weekend in League City, the agents and their guests boarded the Royal Princess II for a dinner cruise. In the spirit of the pirate-themed event, many had their photo taken with Pirate Brad and props. Comfort hosts Easter egg hunt to benefit youth COMFORT – Comfort Lodge No. 2 hosted another successful Join Hands Day Easter Egg Hunt and Carnival on March 20 at the Comfort Youth Baseball Fields. Money raised during the event, along with Matching Funds from the Grand Lodge, will be donated to Comfort Youth Baseball.

The afternoon of fun included egg hunts for all ages, a cake walk with goodies donated by the Comfort School of Dance, carnival games and a bounce castle.

A total of 2,500 eggs were donated this year with 1,500 of those coming from the local branch of Wells Fargo.

Volunteers from Wells Fargo also helped with the carnival.

The May 9 meeting will be held at the Retirement Home and will include a summer kick-off event. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a loaf’s worth of individually wrapped sandwiches. The lodge’s scholarship recipients will be honored.

Gulf welcomes new member, elects new secretary GALVESTON – Gulf Lodge No. 46 met March 20 at the Golden Corral in Galveston.

Guest speaker Eldredge Guidroz opened the gathering with a prayer.

Agent Sarah Spencer has transferred her membership to Gulf Lodge from DaCosta Lodge No. 265.

Welcomed as new members were Maria Mata and son Luis Ortiz.

Dorthy Cathcart, who was serving as inner guard, resigned for health reasons.

Agent Al Stryk installed the two new officers along with other officers not installed in January. They are trustees Teresa Smith and Gary Scales and Finance Committee Member Cody Sanders.

The pin presentation has been postponed until July 10. Grand President Buddy Preus will make the presentation.

Thank you notes were received from Fort Hood for last year’s donation and from Marie Stryk, the recipient of the 2015 Humanitarian Award.

She donated the $200 she received from the lodge to the Military Wives and Moms of Brazoria County. A thank you also was received from the Galveston County

Eldredge Guidroz from Turning Point Church in Galveston spoke about the Galveston Food Bank.

The church has taken over responsibility for the food bank from the Houston Food

Bank. It is located in the back of the church.

David Gaston and Jamie Parkinson from Turning Point Nation talked about the fishing tournament it sponsors for people with physical injuries. They use about 70-80 boats and accommodate about 100 people with disabilities. Members voted to donate $250.

Fort Worth to host annual picnic June 5 in Burleson FORT WORTH – As we welcome spring, we need to start working on welcoming new members. The Fort Worth Lodge No. 33 goal in 2016 is five new members – so before you get spring fever, get Hermann Sons fever and invite someone to join the lodge.

The annual picnic and pin presentation will be held Sunday, June 5, at Warren Park in Burleson. Parents are reminded that there is a nice park where the chil-

dren can play. The lodge has reserved the pavilion from 2-6 p.m. for the meeting, pin presentation and meal.

The lodge will furnish the meal of burgers and hot dogs. Members are asked to bring desserts, a guest or a member who has not attended a meeting for a while.

Guests always are welcome so invite your neighbors, relatives and friends.

A special invitation has been extended to the 50-

and 60-year pin recipients to attend the picnic. The 60-year pin recipients for 2016 are Eleonore Whiting and Kenneth Brehm. The 50-year pin recipients are Sam Jones, Sandra Jones, Earl Whitaker, Teresa Beavers, Sheila Kime and Mike Thompson.

Earl Whitaker reached his milestone on April 5.

In observance of Join Hands Day, members will meet at Burleson Fire Station No. 1 at 828 S.W. Alsbury

at 11 a.m. on May 7 to deliver water and Gatorade.

Members are asked to bring two cases and it can be either water or Gatorade.

The lodge also will make a donation. Firemen can use these drinks while fighting fires and when they return to their home base.

The lodge also is collecting magazines for donation to the dialysis center.

And the lodge will be sending a donation to “Hugs from Home” as part of Join

Hands Day. Congratulations are in order for member Chance Voss on the birth of his son, Jaxsen Voss. Jaxsen was born on March 12.

It was a real joy to have Merlene Childers and her daughter, Carol Patterson, in attendance as Sister Childers has health issues some days.

Dunlay plans Join Hands Day project DUNLAY – Dunlay Lodge No. 285 will meet May 17 at 7 p.m. The lodge is not meeting in April.

At the March meeting, members welcomed member Mary Baxter who was visiting from Marfa.

President Joyce Krenmueller thanked Clyde Muennink and Stanley Meyer for their hard work in completing the installation of the ceiling tin. They did a wonderful job in making the hall a much safer place to meet.

Members agreed to work with the Hondo lodges, the Hondo Boy Scouts and the local AARP chapter on a Join Hands Day project. Because of a previous commitment for the Boy Scouts, the date has been changed from May 7 to the following Saturday, May 14, at 9:30 a.m.

Schwertner hosts Easter egg hunt for all ages SCHWERTNER – Schwertner Lodge No. 307 will meet May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Schwertner Community Center. Larry and Ginger Krueger will host the meeting.

All members are encouraged to attend.

An Easter egg hunt was held before the lodge’s most recent meeting. Everyone took part in the event with the winners of the special egg surprises being Tommy Krueger, Barbara Hale, Larry Krueger and Sydney Marek.

A meal of baked ham, potatoes, salad and angel food cake decorated with Easter Peeps prepared by Irene and Randall Schwertner was served.

During the meeting, new members Kerrigan Goldwater and Piper Marek were introduced.

The lodge wants to raise dues for adult members from $1.80 to $3.60 per year. A proposal will be sent to the Grand Lodge asking that this increase be approved.

Schwertner Lodge will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year and plans will be made for a celebration.

Members will be making fleece blankets April 30 in observance of Join Hands Day. Anyone who would like to participate is asked to call Irene Schwertner at 254-527-4470.

Houston members to work at food bank May 7 HOUSTON – Houston Lodge No. 100 will meet Monday, May 9, with lodge members providing the sandwiches and desserts. The social time begins at 6 p.m.; the meal is served at 7 p.m. and the meeting follows at 7:45 p.m.

Members will provide the potluck dishes and desserts for the June 13 meeting.

All meetings are held at Sokol Hall, 1314 West Patton. Members are welcome to bring guests who have an interest is what Hermann Sons can provide for their family.

The lodge will observe Join Hands Day on May 7 at the Houston Food Bank, 535

Portwall. This is near East Loop 610 and I-10 East. Members will volunteer from 8 a.m. until 12 noon. The Food Bank will provide snacks. If you are attending contact Gary Falkenberg in case there is a schedule change.

Brother Falkenberg talked in his March agent’s report about a newspaper article by noted personal finance columnist Scott Burns about the low rate of return on CDs. Brother Falkenberg pointed out the return on a Hermann Sons annuity is much higher. Cash value life insurance from Hermann Sons also has a good rate of return, he said.

Members are reminded that the lodge’s new member goal for 2016 is 10. Contact Brother Falkenberg with the name of someone you know who has an interest in joining Hermann Sons.

Member David Thomason spent several days in the hospital and Samantha Thomason is scheduled to have knee surgery soon.

Maxwell holds bonnet contest MAXWELL – Maxwell Lodge No. 75 members will attend the Luling School of Dance recital Saturday, May 14, at 4 p.m. at the Luling High School Fine Arts Building, 218 E. Travis.

An Easter bonnet contest was held as part of the April 3 meeting. Winners were President Charles Croley, Past Secretary Elsie Croley, Secretary Darlene Bohmfalk and daughter Laura and Vice President Catherine Blackard.

The lodge will not meet again until Aug. 7. There are no meetings scheduled in June or July. Meetings are scheduled for Sept. 14, which also is Grandparents’ Day, Oct. 2 and Nov. 7. The election of officers is scheduled for the November meeting. President Croley has announced he will not serve again.

Cibolo Lodge welcomes new junior members CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge No. 147 welcomed three new junior members at the April 7 meeting. They are Emily Nicole Harper, Gabriel Andrew Harper and Grant Allen Miller.

Dinner consisted of homemade sausage provided by Freddy Goerke. The tater tot casserole made by Cliff Shepherd was selected as the best side dish and the Coconut Cream Pie made by Fay Fey was selected as the best dessert.

Lasagna will be served at the May meeting. The men are responsible for all the desserts so this should be interesting. The lodge meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal

City. The address is 1129 Pat Booker Road.

Members mourn the passing of two members, Elaine Bertha Dornbusch and Morris Johnson Jr. Two of the lodge’s members are getting ready to attend college. Congratulations to Zane Gray and Emilie Shepherd.

Zane is a senior at the Samuel Clemens High School.

He is a member of the varsity boys bowling team that finished first in district, first in regionals and made into the second round at state. Zane also individually made the AllDistrict Team that was scheduled to compete in College Station on April 17.

Bandera County Lodge hosts Senior Fun Day For Retirement Home residents COMFORT – Bandera County Lodge No. 81 hosted a Senior Fun Day on April 2 for the residents at the Retirement Home in Comfort.

The Ukulele Ladies and Gents of San Antonio entertained with an afternoon concert. Members enjoyed toe-tapping, sing-a-long songs.

Following the concert, the lodge members hosted an ice cream social for all the residents and band members in the recreation room.

A big thank-you goes to Beverly Gagliardi, director of the Ukulele Ladies and Gents, its members and Home Manager Brenda Gunnink for all their help.

Lodge members who volunteered their time to make this event a success were Pam and Allan Biering, Kathleen and Gary Reile, Beverly and Joe Gagliardi and Eileen and Paul Heath.

Pershing will celebrate Mother’s Day May 4 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge No. 160 will meet Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. A Mother’s Day dinner from Church’s Chicken will be served. A Mother’s Day cake also will be provided.

At the April meeting, Grand Lodge Community Service Coordinator Laura Adams presented the Grand Lodge Matching Funds check of $500 to the Guide Dogs of Texas.

President Beth Warne, Vice President Mike Armstrong and Alice Golla presented the Guide Dogs of Texas with checks totaling more than $1,903. The checks represented the proceeds from the Deicke Annual Memorial Spaghetti Dinner Fund-raiser. Thanks go to all who helped and brought desserts to make the fundraiser a success.

Bobby Wilbanks, president of Columbia Lodge No. 66, had successful surgery.

The Home Association’s board of directors has 12 members. The six who represent Dallas Lodge are Treasurer Terri Holmes, Secretary Clint Holmes, David LeCour, Kelly Miller,

Andy Schellenberg and Steve Schellenberg, a member of the Finance Committee. The other six are members of Columbia Lodge. This group is in charge of the lodge hall.

A summary of the work done by this group this year includes an improved accounting system by using QuickBooks, stripping the paint off the wood walls in the meeting room, installation of more electrical outlets and more amps in the meeting room and repairing of the building’s breaker boxes. Bids for replacement of carpets with wood have

been received.

The Grand Lodge matched the Home Association’s $500 donation for North Texas tornado disaster relief.

The checks were delivered to Good Samaritans of Garland to help those in need.

The Home Association was a sponsor and the hall was the headquarters for the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. The building was cleaned inside and outside. Members sold barbecue and drinks and provided Hermann Sons hospitality for the event.

The lodge’s next meeting is set for June 26 at 1 p.m.

Grand Vice PresidentFraternal Kim Krueger and husband Dustin attended the Tuesday, April 5, meeting.

President Laura Tiffin announced scholarship applications will be turned in soon and recipients will be selected. If needed, she will appoint a Selection Committee.

She also announced the school of dance will hold its recital April 30 at the Cuero Intermediate School beginning at 5 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.

Verna Lee Gohmert reported sending get-well cards to June Guenther, Elizabeth Loos and Lena Leist.

Sympathy was extended to the family of Geneva Kite who recently passed away.

June Guenther was in the hospital during last month’s meeting and would like to thank her niece, Tina Hotz, for taking over the treasurer’s job.

Sister Guenther announced the 60-year membership pin recipients for April. They are Ben Prause Jr., a member since April 4, 1956; Ella Buchhorn, a member since April 5, 1956; and Billie Harbordt, a member since April 18, 1956.

Members receiving 50-year membership pins so far this year are Clifton Gips, a member since Jan. 2, 1966; and Carmen Kenner, a member since Feb. 7, 1966. Sixtyyear recipients were Thomas Wendel, a member since March 6, 1956; Donna Fuchs, a member since March 23,

1956; and James Meitzen, a member since March 27, 1956. Seventy-year pin recipients are Carroll Ley, a member since Jan. 26, 1946; and V.J. Kahlich, a member since March 3, 1946.

Members celebrating birthdays in April are Mary Lapp, Natalie Lapp Henry, Marvin Bade and Sarah Carpenter.

March birthday celebrants were Sarah Aronstein, Alice Scheibe, Pat Wanjura, Allison Tiffin and Jerry Wanjura.

Door prize winners were Ben Carpenter, Dorothy Arndt, Verna Lee Gohmert, Gary Hotz and Holly Hotz.

Lockhart Lodge honors graduates

McGREGOR – McGregor Lodge No. 132 welcomed a new junior member, Kyla Annette Sneed, at the April 6 meeting. Kyla is the daughter of Jason Sneed, granddaughter of John and Teresa Sneed and great-granddaughter of Leona Hendrickson.

Teresa Sneed said her grandchildren all love going to Hermann Sons Youth Camp.

She has three attending this year.

President Doris Mooney asked members to bring nonperishable food donations to the May meeting. The food will be delivered to the McGregor Food Pantry in observance of Join Hands Day. Teresa Sneed gave a report on what is needed at the pantry, the number of families served and how the food is distributed.

Youth Coordinator Carol Schuelke welcomed everyone and gave the blessing.

Community Coordinator Nancy Hess suggested that the lodge support the Community Garden in conjunction with Ben Visage who is working toward his

Eagle Scout Award. A donation of $200 will be made to help buy supplies for the Community Garden.

The Community Garden is associated with the Caldwell County Food Pantry. Ben Visage is a longtime member of the lodge.

Spring Branch members to visit Oregon in June BULVERDE – Spring Branch Lodge No. 127 met March 20 at the Bulverde Community Center.

Two new junior members were welcomed. They are Nathan Jay Wiens and Tanner Case Gibbons.

Charles A. Pfeiffer was welcomed by way of transfer.

Gloria Gass reported that she and Sandra Duncan had attended a workshop for agents in February.

Both agents reported that Hermann Sons is making big strides when it comes to implementing new technology.

Spring Branch Lodge’s new

member goal for 2016 is 56. Members can help the lodge reach that goal by recommending a new member. Each time they do that their name will be entered in a drawing for a $100 gift card. A total of 10 gift cards will be given away in 2016 – five in July and five in December.

Carmen Rittimann reported sending a sympathy card to Gloria Gass following the passing of her brotherin-law, John Skinner, and a get-well card was sent to Elvira Weidner who fell and injured her back.

that the plans for the trip to Oregon are coming together.

There will be 30-31 members and guests going on the trip scheduled for June 4-12.

Shelby collecting food items for Join Hands Day SHELBY – Shelby Lodge No. 28 will meet June 12 at 6 p.m. Barbecue sandwiches will be served.

During the April 10 meeting, members voted to change the meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. to allow members to get home earlier. This change will be tried for a year and then reevaluated.

Members were reminded that there will be no meeting in May due to Mother’s Day being on the normal meeting date.

In observance of Join Hands Day, members are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the June meeting.

They will be shared with a

food pantry to be determined.

Cash also can be donated so the pantry can purchase items that are not donated.

Marilyn Vogt reported that six high school seniors have

She will present the local students with their scholarships at a ceremony at their school in May. Kay Caldwell will receive her 60-year membership pin in November. A representative from the Grand Lodge will make the pin presentation.

Seguin to collect items for ‘Hugs from Home’ SEGUIN – Seguin Lodge No. 37 held its semi-annual garage, yard and bake sale on Saturday, April 2. Many serious shoppers showed up to find plenty of bargains and homemade baked goods.

Tables were rented to anyone interested in selling new and used items. Lodge President Vernelle Jones wishes to thank all the volunteers who donated their time to make this event a success.

The lodge will join hands with American Legion Post No. 245, Stern Lodge No. 143 and the Seguin High School Naval JROTC for a Join Hands Day project on Saturday, May

7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Hall, 618 E. Kingsbury.

The project involves collecting items for the “Hugs from Home” program. Anyone can drop off non-perishable snack foods, toiletries and periodicals. These items will be shipped overseas to U.S. military personnel.

Donors also can provide the name of someone who is serving in the military and one of the “Hugs from Home” packages will be sent to that person.

A special celebration is being planned on Sunday, Aug. 14, in honor of the

125th anniversary of Seguin Lodge. More details will be announced in future reports.

Columbia Lodge will host picinic on June 11 DALLAS – Columbia Lodge No. 66 just held one of the best St. Alphonso Pancake Breakfast outings ever. About 75 people came to the benefit and enjoyed a feast fit for kings, queens and in betweens.

The Hall was looking more beautiful than ever. Thanks go to the volunteers who made the Hall sparkle.

Ranger Randall Fields took control of the yard and helped in the parking lot or the beer garden, as it is now known. Clint Holmes strung lights and worked tirelessly to make the beer garden into something many have dreamed of. Dave Lewis was quite busy coordinating with the Deep Elm Arts Festival, handling orders and volunteers and generally keeping the flow of activities moving along.

Lisa Byrn worked hard and had the bar and facility in great order.

Truly, Hermann Sons is a

volunteer organization and if more members volunteered we could change the world.

Columbia Lodge also hosted its fourth annual Carter Blood Drive in conjunction with the breakfast. Proudly, of the more than 20,000 people who might have passed by the Carter bus, Columbia Lodge managed to get 11 donations. That number surpassed the number from last year’s event.

Thanks go to everybody who donated blood. One member was a double donor getting two credits for his universally needed O+ blood.

The Hall became headquarters of the Deep Elm Arts Festival. It is estimated that more than 2,500 people visited the Hall during the threeday festival, many of them unaware of the hall’s place in Deep Elm’s storied history. The Home Association cooked up some barbecue and served a few cold beverages to those who enjoyed

the great music and beer garden. The Bowling Alley hosted poetry and music and upstairs was filled with swing dancers and musical talents from many different groups and persuasions.

The Deep Elm Arts Festival used the front meeting room as its headquarters and the Hall was the hub of a lot of activities.

Organizers hope to be able to do this again next year and feel like the Dallas Hall is the cornerstone of an ever changing and evolving Deep Elm. Hermann Sons had many volunteers who helped in the bar, in the beer garden and in the kitchen to serve those who visited the fine building.

Alan Litt made a fine poster for the Pancake Breakfast and his contribution in the kitchen was invaluable. The Hippie Chef, Bobby Wilbanks, fresh out of his stay in the hospital, flipped flapjacks like the days of old. His wife, Juliea,

scrambled the eggs while Debra Hundley battered up the grill. Melody Ostman kept the orders and patrons in line and in order. Mindy and Riley Curnutt did a couple of shifts serving food and making the kitchen a more pleasant environment. Mrs. Butterworth seemed happy with the turnout and was glad her pancake recipe was appreciated.

And the pulled pork, well it certainly pulled them pork bellies in to the Hall. That and the delicious pecan smoke smell emanating from the beer garden.

Cecilia Phillips has done it again. She coordinates the lodge’s book drive. The lodge is happy to partner with Half Price Books to make the dream of every student in the Cesar Chavez Learning Center connecting with a book for the winter and summer holidays come true.

Columbia Lodge will host its annual picnic on June 11

at the home of Doug and Mary Caudill. The house is located at 10062 Betty Jane Lane near Marsh and Walnut Hill Lane. Thanks go to the Caudills for hosting this year’s festivities. The lodge will provide hot dogs and hamburgers and everyone is welcome to bring drinks and side dishes to accompany a picnic.

Members mourn the passing of Bobbye Oswalt. Sister Oswalt was a longtime member of Columbia Lodge.

Jean Ernst is still on the mend. She attended the general meeting with Schatzie Owens and it was great to see both of these ladies again.

This reporter recently saw Jo Nicodemus and it was great to catch up and relive some old memories. Hope to see her at the Hall soon.

The Hall will host First Friday on May 6. Not sure what the agenda or menu will be but it is always fun to visit and share in some fraternalism.

Austin will donate to hospital Paige to meet May 15 AUSTIN – Austin Lodge No. 120 will meet Sunday, May 1, at 2 p.m. Members are asked to bring sandwiches, chips, dips and desserts.

The lodge met Sunday, April 3, and welcomed Michael Inman and Lisa Inman as new members.

President Ed Kurtz reminded members that online registration is now under way for Hermann Sons Youth Camp.

In observance of Join Hands Day, the lodge will be buying a red wagon and filling it with items and then donating it to Dell Children’s Hospital. Members are asked to bring to the May meeting new books, coloring books, markers, small toys, board games and puzzles that can be included. No stuffed animals. Members also voted to make a $100 donation to the hospital to purchase things that are needed.

Brother Falkenberg brought greetings and spoke briefly about earnings and investments with Hermann Sons as compared to banks. He also reported Agent Chelle Dube had attended an agent training workshop recently.

Sister Mattiza reported Ethel Kunkel had broken her arm. A get-well card will be sent.

The lodge will sponsor the Annual Chili Supper Fund-raiser for the Loblolly 4-H Club on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Paige Community Center. Matching Funds from the Grand Lodge will be requested.

With the lodge’s support, the Paige Buyer’s Club purchased a total of 20 projects at the Elgin and Bastrop livestock shows.

Frank Bilberry won the attendance prize and Michael Dube won the dollar pot. Ronnie Harmon and Janice Bilberry donated door prizes.

Members missed President Chelle Dube and her assistant, Halle Dube, as they were enjoying Spring Break in New York.

New Bielau Lodge plans project WEIMAR – New Bielau Lodge No. 205 will participate in a Join Hands Day project May 13 at Parkview Nursing Home. Members will play games with the residents and serve cookies.

At the March 28 meeting, the lodge welcomed a new member, Anistyn Klaire Pieper.

Agent Mary K. Seifert discussed the upcoming dance recital. It will be held May

Agent Seifert presented a 50-year membership pin to Edwin Novak. Brother Novak lives in Weimar and has been a member since Feb. 7, 1966.

SCHULENBURG – Schulenburg Lodge No. 14 dedicated a flag and pole to Corinth Baptist Church in Schulenburg on March 9.

In attendance were Bill and Delores Michalke, Nathan and Kathy Loth, Curtis Baca, the Rev. Vince Harold and members of the church.

During the March meeting,

members agreed to a donation to Relay for Life. A donation also will be made to the local VFW and American Legion to help with the cost of placing flags on veterans’ graves in the local cemeteries. Approximately 871 flags were distributed throughout the cemeteries in 2015.

DEANVILLE – In observance of Join Hands Day on May 7, Deanville Lodge No. 301 will present monetary gifts to St. Joseph Manor for activities, to the Christian Care Store for its food bank and to Elizabeth Lutheran Church to help feed the hungry.

Members are invited to German Fest on Sunday, May 15, starting with a 10 a.m. church service at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The event includes a German-style lunch with serving starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until the food is all gone, music, a silent auc-

Giddings supports Lee County Livestock Show GIDDINGS – Members of Giddings Lodge No. 54 showed their support of the youth of Lee County with the purchase of a hog during the 44th Annual Lee County Junior Livestock Show Sale on March 5. The hog was purchased from Kaden Noe of Northwest Lee County 4-H. Welcomed as new members at the March meeting were Kanon Wachsmann and Colt Niemeyer.

Members were reminded that the Lee County School of Dance Recital will be held Saturday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in the Giddings High School Cafeteria. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Special Representative Gary Falkenberg reminded members about the interest rates currently being paid on Hermann Sons annuities.

Fredericksburg plans sandwich meal for May 1 FREDERICKSBURG – Fredericksburg Lodge No. 41 will meet May 3. A sandwich meal will be served. During the meeting that follows, mothers will be honored.

After the meeting, games will be played.

Louise Schuetze to help God’s Dogs SAN ANTONIO – Louise Schuetze Lodge No. 3 members celebrated Fiesta at the April 11 meeting. Everyone wore Fiesta-themed colors and enjoyed a taco bar provided by the lodge. Linda Muehlstein provided the taco meat and Lynn Wiede provided peach cobbler.

For Join Hands Day, on May 7 donations will be delivered to God’s Dogs. The organization is in need of newspapers, towels, dog food and dona-

The office is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Carol Grill purchased two big bags of books for the Make a Difference Day project.

Hermann Sons Future Club Shining Stars

MADISEN DENISE CURRY is a member of Pershing Lodge No. 160. She is in third grade. Her favorite food is tacos and she likes watching anything on the Disney channel.

Madisen has five pet dogs.

Her activities include playing with baby and Barbie dolls, Hermann Sons dance and reading books.

JOSEPH DAVID CURRY is a member of Pershing Lodge No. 160. He is in fifth grade. His favorite food is hamburgers and he likes to watch True TV and the History Channel.
