Dear Friends of Hermann Park, What makes a great public park? Certainly, it starts with beautiful landscapes, memorable places, and spaces where people can gather, play, learn, and simply breathe. But after spending most of my career caring for public parks, I’ve become convinced that the very best ones have something else in common: they never stop listening. The most beloved parks evolve with their communities. They respect their history while continually adapting to meet the needs of the people they serve. That’s exactly the approach we’re taking at Hermann Park. One of the most exciting opportunities before us is the restoration of the Japanese Garden, one of the Park’s most treasured places. Rather than beginning with design, we’ve begun by asking questions. Through a community survey, we’re inviting visitors to share what they value most about the Garden and how they hope to experience it in the future. Those perspectives will help inform a thoughtful restoration that honors designer Ken Nakajima’s original vision while improving accessibility, preserving its remarkable character, adding new features, and ensuring it continues to inspire future generations. If you haven’t yet participated, I hope you’ll take a few moments to share your thoughts (see more on page 10). That same philosophy is guiding our conversations about the future of the Judson Robinson, Jr. Community Center. The facility is aging but beloved.
There are no immediate projects on the horizon, and that’s intentional. Before plans are developed, we want to understand how this important civic institution can best serve the families, neighbors, and community organizations that use it every day. The conversations we’re having now will help lay the foundation for a future that reflects the aspirations of the community it serves. Listening won’t stop there. Beginning next year, we’ll launch our first State of the Park Survey, creating an annual opportunity for all of you to tell us what you love about Hermann Park, where it can be improved, and what you’d like to see in the years ahead. Just as importantly, it will establish a baseline so we can measure our progress over time and hold ourselves accountable for continually improving one of Houston’s most treasured public spaces. While we’re planning for the future, we’re also excited to celebrate a major milestone this fall with the opening of North Lake Sanctuary.

Letter from the President & CEO Continued from page 2 Nestled between the Japanese Garden, McGovern Lake, and the Commons, this remarkable new landscape will become one of Hermann Park’s most peaceful destinations. More than a beautiful place to explore, it is an ecological restoration that will improve the health of McGovern Lake through a renewed water system, expand native habitat, and create one of the city’s premier places for inner-city birdwatching and quiet reflection. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful morning walk, a place to reconnect with nature, or simply a moment of calm in the middle of a busy day, I believe you’ll find it here. North Lake Sanctuary represents the very best of what Hermann Park can be: beautiful, restorative, environmentally resilient, and thoughtfully designed for both people and wildlife. That same commitment to thoughtful, collaborative stewardship is reflected in the recent transformation of the area surrounding Miller Outdoor Theatre. Working closely with the Miller Outdoor Theatre Advisory Board, Hermann Park Conservancy and its Projects Committee helped bring the Miller Outdoor Theatre Gateway Plaza to life, shepherding the project from design through construction. The new plaza creates a welcoming garden between Hermann Park Drive and the theatre, with sculptural forms rising from the landscape to announce Miller’s presence and a more inviting, comfortable connection for pedestrians and cyclists moving through the Park. The project
also provided an opportunity to improve the Miller and Caroline crossings, coordinating new raised crossings, wider walkways, and pedestrian signals to make this important connection safer and more accessible. Together, these improvements have transformed a heavily traveled part of the Park into a beautiful and functional gateway— one that welcomes visitors, provides shade and places to pause, improves drainage and planting conditions, and strengthens the connection between the east and west sides of Hermann Park. Every improvement we undertake, whether it’s restoring a historic internationally important garden, reimagining a beloved community asset, or creating a new natural sanctuary, begins with the same belief: the Park belongs to Houston, and its future should be shaped by the people who love it. Kicking It at Hermann Park Welcomed the World to Houston This summer, Hermann Park became a vibrant gathering place where Houston’s global spirit was on full display. Presented by ExxonMobil, Kicking It at Hermann Park transformed the Commons into a welcoming destination for Houstonians and visitors alike, celebrating culture, community, and the unifying power of sport during one of the city’s most exciting international moments. Over 18 days of free programming, guests of all ages enjoyed a dynamic lineup of activities celebrating nature, culture, music, and community. Families participated in hands-on eco art projects, youth soccer clinics, guided garden tours, sustainability workshops, and educational talks, while evenings came
alive with performances from local DJs, jazz musicians, and Latin-inspired artists. Themed weekends highlighted Juneteenth, global music and dance traditions, Japanese culture, Fourth of July festivities, and Houston pride, creating a vibrant experience that connected visitors through learning, entertainment, and celebration. More than a summer event series, Kicking It at Hermann Park showcased the Park’s role as one of Houston’s premier public gathering spaces—a place where people from every neighborhood and every background can come together to celebrate, explore, and create lasting memories. Kicking It highlighted a variety of cultures through an inspiring lineup of performances and traditions, including the powerful rhythms of Ryukyu Damashii DFW performing Okinawan drumming, a lively presentation of Mixteco Ballet Folklórico from Young Audiences of Houston, and a serene “One Wan” tea ceremony presented by Japan-America Society of Houston in the Japanese Garden. From energetic drumming and folkloric dance to the quiet artistry of the tea ceremony, this summer of programming celebrated the rich cultural traditions that make Houston’s community so vibrant.

Kids sharpened their soccer skills through Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s “Soccer for Success” program which held sessions throughout the summer series.
One of the season’s most popular activities was Moonlight Movie Nights, presented by Goya Foods of Texas. Families spread out blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy beloved films under the stars, making these evenings a favorite tradition for many visitors.

Approximately 475 guests gathered at Molly Ann Smith Plaza in the heart of Hermann Park for Evening in the Park, Hermann Park Conservancy’s annual gala, on Thursday, April 30. Each spring, this signature event offers a night filled with connection, purpose, and community in support of this beloved urban green space. The longstanding passion for the Park, plus excitement for what lies ahead, helped the Conservancy raise $825,000 in support of ongoing stewardship and improvements to this century-plus-old Houston treasure. Event co-chairs Meredith Marshall and Rishma Mohamed curated a celebratory evening that emphasized the Park’s importance as a place of respite and joy to its annual millions of visitors. This year’s gala honored Kristy and Chris Bradshaw for their longstanding commitment to Hermann Park and their thoughtful leadership in advancing the Conservancy’s mission. “For us, Hermann Park is Houston’s park. On any given day, you see all walks of life, all demographics, all cultures, all ages enjoying all the beautiful amenities of our Park. It’s Houston’s diversity at its finest,” said Kristy. “Hermann Park is a vital asset, a green oasis in the midst of Houston’s concrete jungle, and one that I thank you so immensely for supporting.” Reflecting on her 15 years on the Conservancy’s board, including four years as board chair, she added: “We’ve imagined and executed our most ambitious goals, and I’ve been lucky to work with some of the smartest, most inspiring, humble leaders across Houston and Hermann Park.” The Conservancy is deeply grateful to Kristy and Chris Bradshaw for their involvement, and Hermann Park would not be what it is today without their support.

Inspiration for the Future of the Japanese Garden This spring, the Conservancy’s Travel Series embarked on a trip to Japan for an unforgettable exploration of the country’s most celebrated gardens, landscapes, and cultural landmarks. From Tokyo to Kanazawa and Kyoto, the journey offered a rare opportunity to experience the traditions, artistry, and stewardship that have shaped Japanese gardens for centuries—and to see firsthand the inspiration behind the restoration plans for Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden. A highlight of the trip was traveling alongside Hiroyuki Tsujii, the lead designer for the restoration of Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden and protégé of its original designer, Ken Nakajima. The group was also joined by Ryoma Tominaga of Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, a key partner in the broader planning and design of our Japanese Garden. They both shared the history, philosophy, and craftsmanship behind many of Japan’s most significant landscapes, helping participants connect what they experienced abroad to the future of Hermann Park. The trip started in Tokyo where the group visited the Nezu Museum and Garden (above left), where their celebrated iris gardens and choreographed visitor experience offered meaningful inspiration for our restoration. The forested approach seen in a stop at Meiji Shrine’s Japanese Garden (above right) demonstrated how landscape can create a powerful sense of transition from city to sanctuary.

Journey to Japan continued Throughout the journey, one message resonated at every stop: exceptional gardens are not simply designed—they are continually cared for, thoughtfully stewarded, and shaped with a long-term vision. As the Conservancy prepares to restore one of the Park’s most treasured spaces, the lessons and relationships cultivated during this remarkable journey will help inform every stage of the project. This trip offered participants more than an unforgettable travel experience; it provided a deeper appreciation for the traditions that inspired Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden and an exciting glimpse into its future. Kyoto offered an opportunity to experience some of Japan’s most influential examples of garden design. At Katsura Imperial Villa (above left), the group encountered a masterclass in restraint, proportion, and the seamless relationship between architecture and landscape. The final visit of the trip featured a special guided tour of the garden at Chion-in Temple (below left), which highlighted a meaningful connection to Hermann Park as much of the temple’s landscape is maintained by Tsujii Landscaping Co., reflecting the extraordinary expertise guiding the restoration back home in Houston.

Voices and Visions: Judson Robinson, Jr. Community Center
For more than 30 years, the Japanese Garden has offered a place of beauty, peace, and cultural connection. Created in 1992 as a gift from Houston’s Japanese community and designed by renowned landscape architect Ken Nakajima, the Garden remains one of Hermann Park’s most treasured destinations.
The Judson Robinson, Jr. Community Center has long served as a hub for recreation, community gathering, and civic engagement in Hermann Park. Now, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Hermann Park Conservancy, is beginning an early planning process to better understand how the Center and its surrounding campus can best serve the community in the future.
The Conservancy is launching the largest scale restoration project in the Garden’s history to restore the space to Nakajima’s original vision while planning for its long-term care and sustainability. Community feedback will help shape how the Garden evolves for future generations. The survey explores ideas such as cultural programming, including tea ceremonies, art and craft workshops, seasonal celebrations, and opportunities for quiet reflection and meditation. It also seeks input on sustainable funding options, including membership opportunities and the possibility of a modest admission fee, to help preserve this special place for years to come.

Join the Teen Teams Ambassador Program Calling all teens ages 15–17 who are passionate about nature, conservation, and giving back to their community! Join Hermann Park Conservancy’s Teen Teams Ambassador Program, a hands-on volunteer experience where students work alongside conservation professionals to restore habitats, care for the Park, and explore careers in environmental stewardship. The volunteer opportunities are held on select Saturday mornings from October 17, 2026, through May 30, 2027. No experience is necessary—just a commitment to complete at least 20 volunteer hours and a desire to make a difference. Participants will gain valuable leadership experience, strengthen college and scholarship applications, build their resumes, and become advocates for one of Houston’s most treasured parks. Park to Port Bike Ride Saturday, October 24
Experience a bike’s eye view of the city through the annual Park to Port Bike Ride, presented by Port Houston! Set for Saturday, Oct. 24, this 20-mile tour is a fun way to experience Houston, and we welcome everyone from experienced cyclists to those just looking for a bit of adventure. Plus, participants enjoy two parties along their journey featuring music, snacks and giveaways—one at the halfway turnaround point and one at Bill Coats Bridge just past the finish line! Saturday, November 14 Lace up your shoes for the annual Run in the Park!
