FY2025 Hermann Park Conservancy Annual Report

Page 1

Hermann Park Conservancy is a citizens’ organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park — today and for generations to come.

As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for this extraordinary community that continues to uplift and care for Hermann Park. The fiscal year began in July 2024 with the impact of Hurricane Beryl, and in the days that followed, I saw the Conservancy team, partners, and volunteers come together with a passionate determination. Their swift work to clear debris, restore vital areas, and welcome visitors back into the Park embodied the stewardship that defines this community.

Soon after those challenging weeks, we were reminded of the spirit that anchors our mission with the Park to Port Bike Ride and Run in the Park fall events that brought thousands of Houstonians together to celebrate wellness, friendship, and the beauty of our city’s crown jewel. The energy in the Park on those days reaffirmed the meaning of these beloved traditions.

Then, January brought a snow day that transformed Hermann Park into a winter dreamscape. Snow-lined trees, sparkling gardens, and the delight of children and adults alike offered a brief reminder to slow down and marvel at nature.

That sense of wonder continued in the spring with The Great Elephant Migration, a striking exhibit created by Indigenous artisans in India. These life-size elephant sculptures, traveling the world to spark conversations about coexistence, found a deeply receptive home in our Park.

Experiencing the Park through the joy and eyes of others has been one of the most meaningful parts of my time here. I had the privilege of witnessing the wedding of a wonderful young couple whose first date took place in Hermann Park in 2021. Three years later, they chose our Celebration Garden as the perfect place to begin the next chapter of their lives. It was a moment that beautifully reflected our mission—and one I will never forget.

This year also marked the first year of Cara Lambright’s tenure as the Conservancy’s president and CEO. Cara has already made a meaningful impact—strengthening partnerships, elevating our visibility, and helping to guide our long-term vision. Her leadership has energized our work, and we are fortunate to have her at the helm as we enter this next chapter.

Through it all, our mission remains steadfast: to preserve, enhance, and advocate for Hermann Park as a welcoming place for all. Behind the scenes, the team is diligently advancing a series of key projects that will unfold over the next ten years. These efforts move us toward the full realization of our master plan and reflect both community input and thoughtful design. It is amazing to witness the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters, whose commitment ensures that the Park remains a source of wellbeing, cultural connection, and everyday magic.

To each of you who participated, donated, celebrated, or simply spent a moment of peace beneath our trees: thank you. Together, we are nurturing a sanctuary that will inspire generations and reflect the beauty and belonging Hermann Park brings to our city.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Roslyn Bazzelle Mitchell, 2024/2025 Board Chair, Hermann Park Conservancy

LETTER

FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

When I joined Hermann Park Conservancy last year, it felt less like starting a new job and more like returning home. My four children grew up in this Park. My mother lived nearby for many years. Like countless Houstonians, so many chapters of our family’s life unfolded under these trees, across these lawns, and along these trails. To have the privilege of stewarding the very place that shaped my family is something I carry with deep gratitude every single day.

I arrived just weeks after Hurricane Beryl—a moment that revealed, once again, both the vulnerability and resilience of Houston’s parks. Though I was not yet here, what I witnessed from afar was a community and a Conservancy responding with speed, skill, and heart. That spirit of stewardship has been a constant throughout my first year, and it is one of the qualities I most admire about this organization and the people who care for Hermann Park.

Over the past twelve months, I’ve had the joy of experiencing the Park through fresh eyes. I saw thousands of Houstonians fill the Park events with energy and inclusivity. I watched the Park transform, almost magically, during January’s rare snowfall. And this spring, I witnessed families delight in The Great Elephant Migration, an installation that touched visitors of every age and background.

These moments reinforced what I have always believed: Hermann Park is not simply a green space. It is the civic heart of Houston alive with culture, discovery, and community.

This year, we also leaned into a renewed vision for what programming can mean in an urban park. From movie nights on the lawns, to free carousel days that bring joy to families across Houston, to art and cultural events that spark conversation, we are building a Park that feels vibrant, inviting, and welcoming to all. Hermann Park is becoming what it has always had the potential to be: Houston’s living room. A place where you gather, linger, celebrate, rest, and return.

And all of this is made possible by the people who love this Park. By donors who believe in its future. By members who support our work year after year. By every rider who buys a ticket on the Hermann Park Railroad. By families who choose to spend an afternoon here instead of anywhere else. This community makes the Conservancy’s work not only possible, but meaningful.

While I am deeply respectful of the many years of strong leadership that brought Hermann Park to this moment, I also come with a clear sense of purpose. My vision for the Conservancy, and for the Park, is a vibrantly programmed landscape that feels welcoming and alive for every Houstonian. A place where cultural experiences, recreation, nature, and everyday joy intersect. A place where every resident can see themselves reflected and feel that the Park belongs to them.

This year, we have strengthened partnerships with the City, our neighboring institutions, and a wide network of community stakeholders. These relationships will be essential as we embark on a new era of investment advancing the projects outlined in our master plan and imagining new ways for people to experience the Park. The work ahead is ambitious, but it is propelled by optimism, collaboration, and the belief that Hermann Park’s best days are still ahead.

I am immensely grateful to our talented staff, dedicated volunteers, generous supporters, and every person who loves this Park. You remind me daily that Hermann Park is both a sanctuary and a shared endeavor. Together, we are shaping a future that reflects the beauty, diversity, and spirit of Houston itself.

Returning to this Park as its CEO has been one of the great privileges of my life. I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you—protecting, enhancing, programming, and celebrating the Park we all call home.

With gratitude,

The Great Elephant Migration

In April 2025, Hermann Park Conservancy proudly hosted The Great Elephant Migration, a breathtaking public art installation featuring 100 life-sized elephant sculptures across the Park. On the fourth stop on the herd’s national tour, the installation invited Houstonians to celebrate conservation, Indigenous artistry, and environmental stewardship. Supported by generous local foundations and donors, the exhibit marked a defining moment in the Conservancy’s Art in the Park initiative, connecting global ecological efforts to local sustainability work.

The Hermann Park stop of The Great Elephant Migration included the debut of “Matt,” a massive African tusker and the installation’s largest sculpture yet

“The Great Elephant Migration is more than an art installation— it is a call to action and a place to experience joy. The elephants’ journey across the globe to Hermann Park is a powerful reminder of why parks matter. Urban parks are places where we could come together— people, nature, and stories from around the world.”

Each sculpture was crafted by The Real Elephant Collective, 200 Indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, who transformed the invasive Lantana camara plant into stunning representations of real elephants they live alongside. Through workshops, family activities, and partnerships with Houston institutions, the Conservancy turned the installation into a hub of learning and connection. Thanks to community generosity, four sculptures— Lotus, Nanu, Banyan, and Iinii’ohsokoyi—now reside in the Cece and Mack Fowler Art Grove, forming the Hermann Park herd and standing as an enduring symbol of art, community, and conservation.

McGovern Centennial Gardens

The McGovern Centennial Gardens remain one of Houston’s most beloved destinations for charming picnics, leisurely strolls, and memorable moments in nature. Thanks to the dedication of our horticulture and grounds teams, the hundreds of plant and flower species that thrive here continue to flourish and bloom throughout the year.

The Commons

The Commons, a vibrant 26-acre corner of the Park, celebrated its first anniversary this year, and in that time, it has quickly become a favorite destination for families, nearby visitors from the Texas Medical Center, and parkgoers from across Houston. With welcoming green spaces, playful features, and areas for gathering and relaxation, the Commons offers a fresh way to enjoy the beauty and community spirit of Hermann Park.

Above: In memory of Kathrine G. McGovern, who along with her late husband are these Gardens’ namesake, the Conservancy and her friends dedicated and planted a Red Maple tree in one of her favorite spots.
Visitors utilize the Commons in all kinds of ways to enjoy their Park day, with a recurring highlight being yoga sessions led by Black Swan Yoga under the shade on the Tsuru Family Terrace. The Conservancy is proud to partner with community organizations to activate the Commons space in an engaging and inclusive manner.
When Hermann Park experienced snowfall in January 2025, the gardening team’s primary focus was on alternatives to frost cloth due to the level of freezing forecasted. Thankfully, the Gardens saw minimal ice damage as the snow acted as insulation for the plant material.
Over 300 grasses were added to the prairie area within the Gardens
More than 5,000 plants were placed in the Gardens this year
More than 6,500 plants were placed in the Commons this year

Yotsuba Circle

Launched in 2023, the Yotsuba Circle is a group of patrons dedicated to Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden. Yotsuba, the Japanese word for “four leaf,” was chosen as the group’s name as each leaf represents an entity integral to the Garden: the community who initiated its creation and continued care, the sister cities of Chiba in Japan and the City of Houston, and Hermann Park Conservancy. The annual patronage of Yotsuba Circle members helps to fund the resources needed to ensure proper and traditional care of the Japanese Garden.
