cruise is an invitation to satisfy your own curiosity and discover the wonders of the world with an experienced expedition team.
For more than 30 years, we have been organising expeditions that get right under your skin. The many open deck areas, with details such as the glass balconies and the deck tour at the bow, offer “front-row” experiences of the surrounding sights and nature. In places where there are no harbours in isolated regions, our Zodiacs will take you in small groups and without long waiting times to the heart of nature: between icebergs, to secluded beaches or along narrow river branches.
The cruise number, which you will find highlighted in colour on the relevant cruise page, gives you quick access to all important information, availability and prices at www.hl-cruises.com/CRUISENUMBER
In addition to included Zodiac rides and hikes, optional shore activities provide that extra something in terms of experiences. The coloured nuances of the ice deviate from any familiar scale. Our captains and crew adapt the route to the weather and ice every day. This has little in common with cruising in the classic sense. Instead, it has a lot to do with experience and intuition: at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, we know the way to the wonders of the Antarctic. We have been travelling to the southern polar region for more than 30 years. Our teams all have experience in the polar regions – and some
have journeyed to the Antarctic over 100 times. In close cooperation with the German Federal Environment Agency, we offer the best possible experiences with the least possible impact on nature. All our Antarctic cruises take place in the austral summer. In December, it almost seems like the remote region is waking up from hibernation just for you. Penguins return from the sea to their breeding ground, mate and build nests. Fresh powder snow covers the landscape, and the
ice is immaculate. It is light for up to 24 hours. Between January and March, particularly fantastic passages are possible with good chances of whale watching. Penguin chicks fledge and the Antarctic comes to life. Whether early or late – let yourself be intoxicated on our expeditions by an almost unearthly beautiful region rich in wildlife – with penguins in huge colonies, mighty elephant seals and whales as well as many species of seabird.
• Small, highly modern ship with never more than 199 guests on board
• State-of-the-art equipment and highest ice class for passenger ships (PC 6)
• Decades of expedition expertise with an award-winning route concept
• Captains and crews with experience in polar voyages and who have often travelled in the Antarctic
• An expedition team of up to 16 members provides thrilling background knowledge
• Membership in IAATO (International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators) for decades ensures promotion of a respectful attitude to the Antarctic environment
Experience this incredible bird paradise, which is home to around 60 species, at close range during Zodiac landings. Observe rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, who share their habitat with kelp geese, striated caracaras, king cormorants as well as black-browed and wandering albatrosses.
Hundreds of thousands of king penguins live side by side with elephant seals and fur seals on the coasts and cliffs – overwhelming natural spectacles that you can observe from a respectful distance after landing on one of the black shores. In addition, trace the footsteps of the explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who found his final resting place here in 1922.
The South Orkney Islands are a lonely, glaciated world of icy wilderness in the Scotia Sea. They are home to chinstrap and Adelie penguins, which can be spotted here. With luck, you will also see icebergs drifting off the rugged coast. Find out how the polar explorers live at the Argentinian Orcadas Station (depending on weather and authorisation).
Icebergs ahead: at the bow and on the open deck areas, you can enjoy the best views of the stunning white wonderland. You may even spot the flukes of blue whales, sperm whales and humpback whales as well as orcas. The Weddell Sea features stunning ice formations – whether as sparkling blue-and-white sculptures, gigantic tabular icebergs or creaking sheets of dense pack ice.
Experience a region between ice and awe intensively – on deck as well as by Zodiac. Off the Antarctic Peninsula, your expedition ship sails into the centre of the flooded caldera of Deception Island. Majestic glaciers and gigantic icebergs shimmer in Para dise Bay. The Lemaire Channel is also impressive, flanked by mighty mountains up to 1,000 m (3,281 ft) high.
The further south your expedition goes, the harsher and icier the endless world of white appears. The excitement on board mounts as you approach the crossing of the Antarctic Circle. How far can the ship advance? Thick ice fields and high tabular icebergs are a common sight here. The glaciers seem even more dominant in this icy domain. A unique feeling of pioneering adventure.
A group of gentoo penguins waddle clumsily along their favourite path, your welcoming committee in the snow. The animals are often just as curious as you are – and loud. As you land on the beaches of South Georgia, for example, where hundreds of thousands of king penguins gather in crowds or breed, there is copious chatter. Penguins are the stars of every Antarctic cruise.
Swimming in the open sea, resting on ice floes or lying on rocks: you will often encounter pinnipeds on your expedition. With a little luck, seals will accompany your ride as you cruise slowly off the coast in the Zodiac. Or you can observe the Weddell seal, for instance, sunbathing on the beach.
A giant body glides gracefully through the water, a deep burst of breath breaking the silence. The fluke rises and falls as if in slow motion. This is an experience of nature you might witness on your expedition. There is a chance of seeing blue whales, sperm whales, humpback whales and orcas. When the marine mammals appear, the captain flexibly changes the course of the ship.
Surrounded by birds curiously following the ship, you will learn a lot about the approximately 275 species of seabird found in the Antarctic waters. King cormorants, petrels and blue-eyed shags are just some of the species you might see. At the time of your cruise, the seabirds come ashore to mate, build nests and breed.
ANIMAL CALENDAR www.hl-cruises.com/antarctica
On every Antarctic cruise, an expedition team of up to 16 members is at your side – with expertise, passion and specialist knowledge. On land and on board, such as in the Ocean Academy, your experts share fascinating details and information. They enrich your observations with interesting facts and answer all your questions during Zodiac rides or on hikes. Captivating presentations and discussions provide impressions and insights that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Studies in a small group Among like-minded explorers and on the basis of real examples, you will acquire new knowledge on explorations with your team of experts.
ELISABETH SPITZER Glaciologist
The mountains of the Alps have fascinated the Viennese scientist since her childhood days. During her geography studies, she became more interested in glaciers and the shaping forces of ice. With her expertise, she will enhance your hikes as she takes you on an educational journey into glaciology and discusses the formation of spectacular landscapes with you.
He is one of the world’s leading maritime historians. In addition, he is an expert in the history of fishing and whaling as well as the history of the Arctic and Antarctic and polar tourism. Numerous research trips have taken him to the most remote regions of the polar world. His extensive knowledge and personal experiences enrich every expedition.
CARINA GSOTTBAUER Biologist
An encounter with beluga whales and a blue whale several years ago deepened her passion for these animals, as did her time on whale-watching boats in Iceland. She will teach you to identify and name the different species of whales and also introduce you to the world of plankton – with the help of microscopes, for example, in the Ocean Academy.
Your polar day begins in the morning when the Zodiacs are lowered into the water, ready to take you off to extraordinary destinations. The crystal-clear air and the omnipresent sense of adventure envelop you while the majestic atmosphere of the Antarctic revives all your senses. As you zip through the water heading to the coast, the back of a whale is suddenly spotted. Your Zodiac stops to enjoy this impressive spectacle. With its burst of breath clearly audible, the ocean giant glides past in the water. As if in slow motion, it lifts its fluke before gracefully diving back down again. The excitement in your small group continues even after the Zodiac lands ashore. On a snowshoe hike with your experts, you will get a feeling for the challenges historical explorers once had to face. The hike rewards you with stunning vantage points and fascinating wildlife observations.
Your onward journey takes you past an iceberg from which Adelie penguins jump head first into the water. Back on board, your sense of discovery continues in comfort. On the many open deck areas, you can enjoy the sight of the sparkling blue-and-white world stretching out before you. In the afternoon, you will again take to the Zodiacs and head right back into the spectacular world of ice. A seal basks in the sun on an ice floe. The coloured nuances of the ice differ from any familiar scale, and the frozen works of natural art leave you in awe. You can then consolidate your many experiences in the ship’s Ocean Academy and at presentations given in the evenings by your experts with a view of the next expedition day. As the ship pushes huge floes of ice aside, the thrilling sound of crunching and cracking accompanies towards more upcoming adventures.
In addition to the sea and inland ice, the Antarctic region also has tundra, dry valleys, glaciers, mountains and active volcanoes to offer. To protect the sensitive ecosystem, your explorations along the coast and on land only take place in small groups.

In the summer, the island paints a colourful picture: icy white, lush green, deep brown and dazzling yellow.
