BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:  Those in the “Most Important Information About BIKTARVY” section.  Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY.  Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY.  Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.  Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.  The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).

 Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you

have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months.

ABOUT BIKTARVY BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements.

BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains:  dofetilide  rifampin  any other medicines to treat HIV-1

BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY Tell your healthcare provider if you:

 Have or have had any kidney or liver problems,

Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.

HOW TO TAKE BIKTARVY Take BIKTARVY 1 time each day with or without food.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take:  Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-the-

counter medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist.

 BIKTARVY and other medicines may affect each other.

Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.

since COVID-19 altered everything, I’ve worked hard to focus on the positive. The novel coronavirus has hurt and killed so many, but I’m buoyed by the innumerable stories of survival, courage, and empathy. Staying optimistic is not easy, but necessary.

Thankfully, this latest issue of Plus is providing me with unforced joy. It is our magazine’s first bilingual issue, with every article presented in English and Spanish. With Latinx people disproportionately at risk for HIV, an issue focusing on our Spanish-speaking community is long overdue. I’m proud of the efforts of our editors, writers, and designers who created this issue remotely as the world became increasingly scary.

With a focus on the Latinx community and newly diagnosed poz folks, this issue contains the latest information on COVID-19 and how it’s affecting people living with HIV and the organizations working for them.

Don’t miss our interviews with Latinx role models like Jesús Guillén, Dolores Solis, and our cover star, Hamilton’s Javier Muñoz (page 30). Read how the coronavirus is affecting Latinx immigrants and how the disease physically impacts all poz folks. At a time when so much is expected of us, Tyler Curry’s “Daily Dose” column on self-love hits just the right note.

Aside from making sure our immediate needs are met, being good to ourselves and others right now should be paramount. he Elton John AIDS Foundation launched a $1 million emergency fund in April to assist people with HIV in obtaining care during the COVID-19 crisis.

“For almost 30 years my foundation has prioritized the most vulnerable people to HIV, to end the AIDS epidemic, and we’re committed to this during the COVID-19 crisis, too,” the musician said in a video posted on Twitter. “Distributing medicine, testing, and preventive treatment is not as simple as it was a few weeks ago.”

The fund will help to assure the foundation’s partner organizations can continue to serve the most marginalized populations and seeks to support “solutions that have strong potential to address specific challenges that have arisen for people already living with or at severe risk of HIV/AIDS and who are now at heightened risk as a result of the COVID19 pandemic,” the foundation’s site reads. “Such solutions should aim to demonstrably mitigate the threat of COVID-19 on maintaining current levels of access or increasing access to HIV-related prevention, testing, care, and treatment adherence services.”

Medication adherence is particularly important at this time. Although the exact impact of COVID-19 on people with HIV has not been determined, those living with HIV who are not on medication are at heightened risk of contracting other infections in general and developing complications, according to the World Health Organization. There is no evidence that the risk is greater for those whose HIV is undetectable.

John’s other activism during the COVID-19 crisis has included hosting an all-star coronavirus relief concert in March that raised $10 million.

Lorena Borjas, an esteemed transgender activist in New York City, died of COVID-19 at age 60.

Borjas immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico in 1981. She became an advocate for NYC’s t ra n sgender p opu lat ion, especially those who had been victimized by trafficking and other forms of exploitation.

She helped others obtain legal representation, hormone treatment, and HIV testing, and even opened her small Queens apartment to them, housing as many as 20 at a time.

“We were women without families and who had run away from our countries, persecuted for expressing our identity, for being ourselves,” she told El Diario/La Prensa in 2017. “By the time the 1980s came, we were a growing, if ignored, community.”

In 2012, she founded the Lorena Borjas Community Fund to help trans people with legal costs. She also worked for the Community Healthcare Network Transgender Families Program in Queens.

“Lorena taught me more about advocacy than I could have ever learned anywhere else,” tweeted Chase Strangio, who worked for the Lorena Borjas Community Fund.

HIV-positive immigrants and refugees demand release from federal detention facilities.

Before COVID-19 took over the globe, two HIV-positive transgender Latinas, Roxsana Hernandez from Honduras and Johana Medina Leon from El Salvador, died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Causes of the young women’s deaths are murky, but a report by NBC News indicated the 33-year-old Hernandez—who ICE officially claimed passed away due to cardiac arrest—may have actually died of HIV complications, possibly because she couldn’t get access to her meds.

“This government has not and would not help us,” says Marco Castro-Bojorquez, the cofounder of HIV Racial Justice. “To the contrary, it has systematically attacked us from the get-go. They closed the borders, and as far I am concerned there’s no immigration activity at the border with Mexico. There are countless people being directly sent to Central America, and there are a ton of people in the border towns, something that didn’t exist before Trump.”

If the situation was dire before for poz immigrants and refugees to this country, it only grew worse after the novel coronavirus took hold.

While health experts indicate HIV-positive people on their meds are no more vulnerable to COVID-19 than HIV-negative people, those who can’t adhere to their regimen could face greater risk for infection.

The nonprofit organization Immigration Equality filed a complaint in March with the Department of Homeland Security’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, demanding the immediate release of all HIV-positive people in ICE detention. Other reports have emerged that access to medications is only part of the problem. Some have also alleged crowded facilities and a lack of soap and hand sanitizer.

In the complaint, Immigration Equality Executive Director Aaron C. Morris cited six specific individuals, all seeking asylum for persecution because of their sexual orientation, political opinion, and HIV status. The ICE detainees were denied release even though they were eligible for parole with a sponsor.

“Our community has faced a life-threatening pandemic before.

Then, as now, we raised the alarm with government officials who did nothing until we forced them to,” Morris said in a statement.

“We cannot allow the negligence of the federal government to let our people die again. All people living with HIV must be released from immigration detention immediately. Every day DHS waits will have fatal consequences.”

Two days after filing the complaint, ICE officials released five LGBTQ immigrants with compromised immune systems, including two with HIV, the group Trans Queer Pueblo announced in late March.

The first annual National Latino AIDS Awareness Day is held on October 15. The observance is the result of a collaborative effort by the Hispanic Federation and the Latino Commission on AIDS with the goal of increasing awareness of HIV and AIDS in Latinx communities in U.S. states and territories.

Canada makes way for a monthly injectable HIV regimen. Europe and the U.S. could follow.

By Neal Broverman ViiV Healthcare announced in March that a once-a-month injectable HIV regimen has been approved for use in Canada.

Health Canada, the nation’s health department, green-lit Cabenuva, the brand name for the first monthly regimen for people living with HIV who are virally stable and suppressed.

The medication is injected into a muscle. Side effects, seen in about 2 percent of study participants, included reaction at the injection site, fatigue, nausea, and headache.

Along with Cabenuva, ViiV announced the approval of Vocabria, a daily pill to be taken with Cabenuva for about a month to help transition users.

“With Cabenuva, people living with HIV who are virologically suppressed now have an option to maintain that suppression with 12 treatments a year, thereby positively impacting their lives,” ViiV CEO Deborah Waterhouse said in a statement.

The British pharmaceutical company describes Cabenuva as “a kit with two injectable medicines—ViiV Healthcare’s cabotegravir and Janssen’s rilpivirine.”

available in the U.S. hit a stumbling block early in the year when the Food and Drug Administration rejected ViiV’s application for approval, citing issues with the drug’s manufacturing process. ViiV officials say they can address the concerns and eventually get a sign-off from the FDA, though it’s not clear when the company may resubmit its application.

The treatment is also moving toward approval in Europe, with decisions expected soon from several drug agencies there.

Long-acting injectables have been touted as a solution to adherence and pill fatigue issues. But, as ViiV chairman David Redfern noted in a call with investors last year, it’s unclear whether HIV-positive people would prefer injecting their regimen monthly rather than a daily pill. But interest is out there. “[Injectables] won’t be for every patient,” Redfern said, according to Outsourcing-Pharma.com. “I think there have been a lot of patients happy to continue on oral therapy. But forthose interested in moving, they’re ver y p a s s ion a t e about it.”

HIV charity events ground to a halt during the COVID-19 crisis, but some organizations are finding ways to ensure funding for HIV-positive people doesn’t dry up.

AIDS Walks and charity events like AIDS/LifeCycle raise millions annually for prescriptions, health care, food, housing, and basic social services for people living with HIV. But in 2020 these organizations—and, ultimately, HIVpositive people—will take a hit as many outdoor activitybased events are taking a year off due to the COVID-19 crisis. Still, some organizers are thinking outside the box.

Recently, the people behind California’s AIDS Walk Orange County announced they would move forward with their 2020 event as a virtual walk. Through April and May, “virtual walkers” can sign up and donate their own money or solicit donations from others. Radiant Health Centers, the event’s organizers, are encouraging supporters to post pictures and videos of themselves walking, jogging, riding, or hiking on social media with the hashtag #AIDSWalkOC. It’s clear this solution for the event, as creative as it is, is not a panacea. Radiant Health Centers set an ambitious goal of $175,000, but by mid-April only $20,000 had been raised. Not only are HIV leaders dealing with an economy in free fall, but they’re also competing with many other philanthropic endeavors geared directly to COVID-19 victims, essential workers, and first responders.

Still, whatever money rolls in will be better than nothing and will allow Radiant Health Centers to continue providing at least some essential services to those who need it most.

“After 34 years we weren’t going to back down now when the need is greater than ever for our clients,” says Radiant Health Centers’ chief development officer, Susan Caumiant. “We are adamant in doing everything in our power to move forward in support of the more than 7,000 individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Orange County.”—NB

SIEN DO U NA M U J ER cisgénero heterosexual de 22 años que había estado en una relación durante tres años, la última cosa que Diane Delph-Tinglin, que había ido al médico para una visita de rutina, esperaba escuchar era “Lo siento mucho, tienes VIH.” Adentro, se desmoronó. Se enteró de que su pareja le había ocultado su estatus positivo durante toda su relación.

Entre eso y su propio diagnóstico, dice DelphTinglin, se sumió en una profunda depresión.

Pero, ella subraya ahora, fue el estigma, no la enfermedad, lo que más la impactó.

“Hubo un verdadero viaje,” explica DelphTinglin. “Al principio era estresante para mí porque no sabía sobre el VIH. Como, yo conocía el VIH... pero el estigma te enseña que es algo malo... La gente decía ‘Oímos que agarraste al monstruo,’ que es a lo que se le refería, y [pensé], voy a morir. Así son las cosas. BEING A 22-Y E A R-OLD straight cisgender woman who had been in a relationship for three years, the last thing Diane DelphTinglin, who had gone to the doctor for a routine visit, expected to hear was “I’m so sorry, you have HIV.” Inside, she unraveled. She learned her partner had concealed his positive status from her throughout their relationship.

Between that and her own diagnosis, Delph-Tinglin says, she plunged into a deep depression. But, she stresses now, it was the stigma, not the disease itself, that impacted her most.

“There was a real journey,” Delph-Tinglin explains. “In the beginning it was stressful for me because I didn’t know about HIV. Like, I knew HIV…but the stigma taught you that it’s something bad.... Folks would say, ‘We hear you got the monster,’ which is what it was referred to, and [I thought], I’m going to die. That’s the way it goes. And as I started trying to get help, those things were barriers for me because I just kept feeling like, What’s the point? you know, and [thinking about] how people would [not] accept me…like my parents. If my family finds out, they’re going to disown me. If my friends find out, they’re not going to want to be my friends. If guys find out, they’re not going to want to date me.”

Delph-Tinglin suggests there’s often a disconnect between people of color and health care professionals who lack an awareness or understanding of Black culture and AfricanAmerican communities.

“It’s like, I’d get into care and then I didn’t really understand what they were talking about, so I came out of care, and then I was depressed for a long time,” she recalls.

Ultimately, it was being around other people living with HIV that made it possible for her to understand that not only did her life still have value, but that she could be poz and thrive.

“I started trying to go to different groups and stuff, different organizations, with other people who are [HIV-positive], so that I could get some better understanding of what I really am supposed to do with my life at this point,” she explains. “And for me, going to those things, I started realizing that people are living. And it was just me putting those thoughts in my head, making me feel that way—and I needed to change that.”

Delph-Tinglin says she also started thinking about what she could do for others. “I didn’t want [someone else] to get diagnosed later on down the line in my neighborhood and not have the proper services or have the proper care or guidance. It has to be somebody in this neighborhood that’s going to step up for everybody and say, ‘Look, it’s me and I’m living, and this is what we gotta do.’ So that’s the point that I’ve gotten to now, where I’m working and I’m able to give back.”

One of the first organizations that really helped DelphTinglin on her path to health and healing was the Alliance for Positive Change in New York City (Alliance.nyc), where she attended a workshop for women with HIV. The peer navigators there connected her to medical care, helped her find a doctor she liked, accompanied her to appointments, and called regularly to check in.

Eventually, she completed Alliance’s peer training program so she could help others going through similar challenges. Today, Delph-Tinglin is the lead trainer for Alliance’s Positive Life Workshop, which focuses on helping people newly diagnosed, especially in terms of emotional and mental wellbeing and community support.

“It’s a wonderful workshop,” she says excitedly. “I would like to take this all over New York City—and not just New York City, everywhere that has a positive person! Anybody who is positive needs to be in this workshop. This workshop talks to you about your self-management…that’s what we’re all about.

There’s a lot of things that people who are HIV-positive deal with that they can’t talk [about]. But being in an environment like the Positive Life Workshop, you have that platform to talk about those things that you feel nobody understands, to bring up those issues that you’re not able to address [elsewhere]. So it’s a cognitive workshop that deals with all those aspects—so that people can feel better about themselves and start living again.

People can start taking care of themselves and know that you don’t have to be afraid.”

Y era sólo yo poner esos pensamientos en mi cabeza, haciéndome sentir as- y necesitaba cambiar eso.”

Delph-Tinglin dice que también empezó a pensar en lo que podía hacer por los demás. “No quería que [alguien más] se diagnosticaran más tarde en mi vecindario y que no tuviera los servicios adecuados o que tuviera el cuidado o orientación adecuada. HIV brought this Mexican-American mother and son even closer.

By Desirée Guerrero Jesús Guillén is an activist, musician, photographer, and spiritual healer (“But now,” he says, “somehow, advocacy and activism has become a huge part of my life”). A long-term survivor, he has been living with HIV for 35 years—and through it all, his mother, Dolores Solis, has been by his side. Here he and his mom share some of their ups and downs as a family impacted by HIV and how it’s strengthened their bond.

JESUS

Where were you born?

I was born in a small city called Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in an area called La Huasteca—the humid, hot, jungle side of this state known for chocolate and silver.

What was life like for you as a child?

Honestly, being a kid, for me…was not terribly easy. I was the “little man of the house.” My mom married at 16, and by 21 she already had four kids. I’m sure it was not easy for her either…. I think I was always very sensitive, and my grandfather was [too] macho to understand me, so my grandma was my protection.

She is the person who taught me about giving without expecting anything in return.

When and how were you able to tell your mother about your HIV status?

I waited, it was a few years [after my diagnosis]…. I wanted her to see that I was OK physically…. I simply said, “By the way mom, I am HIV-positive—but as you can see, I am OK.” There was a lot of silence, and I could see she was trembling.

She started to cry. I hugged her, and I said, “It is OK, you can see I am OK.” How would you describe your mother to someone who’s never met her?

She is a diva! There is a saying in Spanish, “Antes muerta que sencilla” [roughly, “I’d rather be dead than plain”]—she likes to look good [and] never will show herself without makeup.

My friends love her, especially my gay friends…. She has been supportive of LGBTQ and HIV issues.

Were you open with your family about being gay?

I told my mother I was gay by a letter when I was 30 years old.

I did it because I had always thought that if one day I have a lover [or] husband, I want him to be part of a family—my family, our family! My mother answered that she will love me always as I am.

How important has it been for you to have your mother’s continued love and support?

I love having her by my side when we are in a protest or a demonstration—it shows that not every family, especially Latinos, are pushing sons and daughters out of their homes…. I hope we keep understanding our journey and helping each other [as we get older], but we also need community support and social support. We are not the only ones exploring caregiving while taking care of our own health issues.

Plus: Where were you born?

Zacualpan, Nayarit, Mexico.

What was your childhood like?

My childhood was happy, a quiet life on the ranch. Many brothers.

What are your some of your talents or interests?

Talents I don’t think I have, and my interests? I’d love to keep swimming, that I like a lot.

How many children do you have?

Six children—four women and two men.

What was Jesús like a child?

He was very affectionate, intelligent, and very creative, always coming home with a little flower that he brought me.

How would you describe Jesús to someone who’s never met him?

An incredible human being, who sets aside his health to support and help those who need it, in addition to being cheerful, positive, and sensitive.

How did you react when you first learned Jesús was gay?

Was it difficult for you to accept?

My first reaction? Fear, not because of his orientation but because you were already beginning to hear that being gay was synonymous to AIDS and it was a quick and painful death. I love him for being an exemplary human and a better son.

How did you feel when you first learned Jesús was HIVpositive? How you deal with it?

Again, fear, for the news was very sad and it was said they would die in a short time and always with the anguish of having him far away was, and still is painful for me, for I see his suffering and I can’t do anything to remedy it. I beg God every day to find a cure for this disease.

Unfortunately, often in Latinx communities, many parents reject their children who are gay or living with HIV because of their religious beliefs and cultural stigmas. What advice would you give to parents who are experiencing this?

You are right, most Latinos, especially men, are raised as machos and if at any time they are delicate or sensitive that is not accepted. “MEN MUST NOT CRY!” was said at home. Before we judge we have to understand that the world has them stigmatized by everything and that’s very painful.

Mothers living with HIV are seldom “seen,” but one woman is changing that.

Las madres viviendo con VIH son raramente “visibles,” pero una mujer está cambiando eso.

Motherhood has many faces, but one we rarely see is that of women living with HIV. Grissel Granados, a youth advocate and filmmaker who was born with HIV, is hoping to inspire moms living with HIV to not let their status define them.

Born in Mexico City in 1986, Granados contracted HIV perinatally. Her mother had become HIV-positive after a blood transfusion but wasn’t diagnosed until five years later.

Sadly, Granados’s father also became HIV-positive and he died of AIDS complications.

“All of this happening when she was only 23 years old,” Granados says of her mom. She herself is a mother to a 10-month-old foster child. “Having to migrate [to the U.S.] on her own, and also being transparent with me as a 5-yearold... she was somehow able to find the words to explain this in a way that didn’t sound scary and didn’t diminish any hope.”

It wasn’t until after college that Granados began working in the HIV field and immersed herself in research. “I didn’t see myself in the data,” she says. “I didn’t see anyone who was born with HIV.” This inspired her to co-produce and co-direct the 2015 film We’re Still Here, highlighting the first generation of children born with HIV in the 1980s and ’90. Her film came out a year after she joined the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. Then in 2017, she and five other colleagues resigned in protest over Donald Trump’s irresponsible leadership around issues concerning those living with HIV. “It didn’t make sense to continue to be part of a body that was not going to be used at its full capacity and full potential,” she says. “At every turn, we were going to be challenged. They were just not listening to science.”

Of course, the strength she’s carried in her own life has organically spilled into the way she nurtures her son.

“Right now, I’m like, ‘This little boy is the center of my universe and no one is going to love him like I love him,’” she quips. “All of the clichés of Latina mothers and their sons, I feel, are definitely coming true.”— DAV I D A R TAV I A

La maternidad tiene muchas caras, pero una cara que en pocas ocasiones vemos es la de las mujeres que viven con el VIH. Grissel Granados, una joven defensora y cineasta que nació con el VIH, espera inspirar a madres viviendo con VIH, a que no dejen que su estado les defina.

Granados nació en la ciudad de México en el 1986. Ella contrajo el VIH perinatalmente. Su madre contrajo el VIH a través de una transfusión de sangre, sin embargo, supo de su diagnostico cinco años después de aquella transfusión.

Lamentablemente, el padre de Granados también contrajo el VIH y murió por complicaciones relacionada con el SIDA. “Todo esto sucediendo cuando solo tenía 23 años,” dice Granados cuando narra la historia de su madre. I first met scholar, activist, and all-around cool guy Nestor Rogel in 2018, when he was a recipient of the annual Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship. Since 2009, the program (AIDSMemorial.org) has awarded $300,000 in scholarships to 88 emerging young leaders in the fight against HIV—many of whom, like Rogel, are living with HIV themselves.

Rogel was born HIV-positive and grew up in south-central Los Angeles. He didn’t learn of his status until he was 13, when a social worker disclosed it to him by accident, believing he already knew.

“It was heartbreaking,” he confided two years ago. “I straight up stopped thinking I was a person anymore...I really thought I was a monster.”

His teen years brought more trauma and challenges, including the loss of his mother to AIDS-related complications and witnessing extreme violence in El Salvador when sent there to live with family. Today, it’s hard to believe that the good-natured, funny young man who loves rock music has endured so much.

Though it hasn’t been an easy journey.

“I have been fortunate to have siblings that were able to see the good in me when I could not,” Rogel says. “It was hard. I had always planned to die at 19, and tried to commit suicide multiple times…. It took multiple attempts at therapy before it stuck. I did many other activities like playing guitar, jogging, and boxing to help me with the anxiety. I would say that healing is a journey and it can look like different things to people. Generally, I think it helps to reach out to someone you love and check in. It can make a lot of difference.”

A graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills, Rogel now works as a case manager for AltaMed Health Services in East L.A., which offers HIV and numerous other health care services. He also serves on the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV and has worked with numerous other local nonprofits and grassroots orgs. In addition, Rogel works part-time as a library clerk and as a doorman at a local bar.

Though Rogel is straight, he’s become a great ally to the LGBTQ community through his work around HIV (he even started a safe space called Queer in Compton). Still, he admits it can sometimes be difficult for straight folks living with HIV, who may feel confined to queer spaces when talking about HIV. Rogel says people constantly assume he’s gay or questioning.

“More people are shocked to find out that I am straight than they are that I was born HIV-positive,” says Rogel, who has “HIV” proudly tattooed in bold letters on his forearm. “I feel this focus on just gay and bi men takes [away] from the human aspect of the virus.”

Still, he’s a welcome bridge there.

“I think the Latinx community has a long way to go in accepting the LGBT community,” he adds, “as well as understanding that it is a virus that, much like COVID-19, can pass on to any human.”

Dating as a straight young man with HIV, Rogel says, “has been a growing experience. I have had many relationships, and disclosing is the hardest part as it tends to be a deal-breaker for some…. But I have learned how to love myself, and anyone who wants to be in my life is there as a partner. I do not need someone to complete me; rather, I want someone who is complete to build things with.”

Tell us how you got involved in HIV activism.

Manzo-Arroyo: To be honest, I never saw myself working in HIV activism. Being Latinx, a DACA recipient, and gay, growing up I was already worried about those three identities and how they would impact me. As I became more open about each identity, I started being more vocal about marginalized communities. Eventually, my partner started working at a nonprofit that serves homeless, trans, LGBTQ+, HIV-positive, and other marginalized individuals.

When they had an opening for a rapid HIV tester, my partner told me about it, I decided to apply, and the rest is history.

Rios: I first got involved in HIV activism shortly after cofounding my school’s first GSA. As part of our weekly schedule, we would have sex-ed workshops facilitated by the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation. After a couple of workshops and a site visit to SAAF, I realized I wanted to be more involved with youth HIV/AIDS education and prevention. At SAAF, I worked predominantly on programming to reduce substance abuse among queer youth.

We spoke with these two impressive leaders, both recipients of the Pedro Zamora Young Leaders Scholarship, and got their clear-eyed takes on HIV stigma, racial privilege, and how to face COVID-19 with strength and not panic.

What do you think are the biggest concerns for young people living with HIV, especially those of color?

Manzo-Arroyo: Stigma and the lack of resources to individuals that hold intersectional identities. Right now I know of resources available to undocumented POC because of the work I have been doing. However, if I were still the same gay undocumented brown kid growing up in Chicago, I would have no idea of what resources were available to me. The stigma in POC, monolingual, LGBTQ , undocumented communities is still alive [and] making it difficult for individuals to look for resources and find the help they need.

Rios: A lack of social, f inancial, and medical support as the result of mandated social distancing, business closures, and the straining of our health care system. For many youth, the effects of social distancing and inability to freely exit their home spheres can have negative emotional and mental health consequences. The closure of many businesses can place these youth in positions of financial uncertainty that when compounded with the shortages of food supplies or even an inability to shop for groceries because of their personal risk, this can result in a state of desperation.

Historically, queer youth have been required to self-advocate in the context of a complicated and oppressive health care system, and the same remains true during an epidemic.

How does your Latinx identity influence your work?

Manzo-Arroyo: I know firsthand what some Latinx communities go through. Wherever I am, I use my knowledge and experience to help those that need it. This connection motivates me to translate for individuals that do not know English and to advocate within organizations for the implementation of Spanish documents for Latinx communities that they could and should be serving.

Rios: I am a first-generation Mexican-American born and raised in the American Southwest. Growing up gay and Latinx was a matter of constantly reconfiguring and renegotiating my identities to fit the frameworks of Americanism, Chicanismo, queerness—frameworks that I was told don’t fit together. Making these identities fit within my own mind has been my personal work, and it has forced me to look at and question why certain identities are muted and why the experiences of POC are often silenced over others. Because of my Latinx identity, the concerns of POC are inherently my center of focus. If I can address the disparities that communities affected by the HIV experience, this will serve to benefit all individuals afflicted.

M I A M I H A S V I B R A N T sunsets, gorgeous Art Deco architecture, and the best Cuban food in the U.S. But the area’s true treasure is longtime HIV activist Maria Mejia.

For over 20 years, the fierce survivor and advocate has been helping and inspiring women and girls around the world.

The Colombia-born beauty started life in an environment of trauma and violence, having survived both childhood sexual abuse and gang life in her teens. Mejia has admitted to reporters that when she first learned, as a teenager, that she’d contracted HIV from her gang-leader boyfriend, she was devastated and alone—back when being positive was often a death sentence.

Not only did Mejia live, but this long-term survivor is thriving today and she continues to inspire those around her.

“I had two options—to lie in bed and die or to fight and survive, and now thrive, by helping others, by being their example and educating the world about HIV,” she says.

“I have learned that being of service to others gives me purpose and I thrive on my mission and passion.”

Today, the 46-year-old works with multiple organizations as an international human rights activist, speaker, author, mentor, and educator. Mejia also proudly serves as a global ambassador for the Well Project, a nonprofit whose mission is to change the course of the HIV pandemic through a comprehensive focus on women and girls.

Mejia is also the founder of “the largest online support group on Facebook for people living with this human condition and those affected by it—both in English and Spanish,” she says. “I created it because I knew that a support system is very important.”

Since being featured on Plus magazine’s list of the Most Amazing HIV-Positive Women in 2015, Mejia has continued her dedication to ending the stigma associated with HIV. She’s passionate about getting the message out about U=U, the global consensus backed by research stating that when someone living with HIV is virally suppressed (undetectable), there is zero chance of transmitting the virus to a sexual partner, even without the use of condoms.

In fact, Mejia is “a proud ambassador and part of the [U=U consensus] national and international steering committee,” as she puts it. “I jumped in one year after it all started, and I fought along with Bruce [Richman, who spearheaded the U=U movement] and others—and I am still fighting many activists and people in the health field that do not want to accept this. It enrages me because it has set us free.”

She continues, “I am a 31-year, long-term survivor, and they knew the truth for many years and didn’t tell us because they were gatekeeping, and also because

they thought we were not responsible enough.

[U=U] has freed us from stigma. People are disclosing easier; people have an incentive to stay in treatment and become undetectable.”

Mejia is especially focused on connecting with and helping those who are newly diagnosed, because they are the most vulnerable in many ways. Mejia, who enjoys an active lifestyle of traveling, hiking, biking, and kayaking, encourages people living with HIV to not give up on their dreams and to continue living their best life.

“Take your meds, live a healthy lifestyle,” she adds, “and just throw everything toxic out of your life.”

The Miami area currently has one of the highest rates of new HIV diagnoses in the country, and over 26,000 people there are living with HIV, according to AIDSVu. However, there are many organizations and advocates working hard to bring down those numbers. Whether you’re HIV-positive or unsure of your status, you can find vital resources in the greater Miami area that can help keep you safe, happy, and healthy.

If you are poz, there are local organizations that will immediately link you to care and get you on treatment, while offering financial assistance for meds and other immediate needs.

Once a person living with HIV receives treatment, most will achieve viral suppression, also known as being undetectable. When a person is undetectable, it becomes impossible to transmit the virus to a sexual partner— even without the use of condoms. Also known as U=U, the equation reflects a globally accepted scientific consensus based on years of extensive research.

If you’re HIV-negative, it’s time to think about real prevention. PrEP, currently in the form of a daily pill, when taken properly makes it virtually impossible to contract HIV. Don’t Call it the Great White Way Broadway star Javier Muñoz is using his numerous identities—gay, Latino, HIV+ cancer survivor, artist—to create his best work yet.

By David Artavia + photography by Alejandro Ibarra As New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, the theater community responded swiftly. In March, Broadway and many off-Broadway theaters announced they were suspending shows as a safety precaution, even before the city mandated such closures, leaving many actors and artists like Javier Muñoz out of a job.

The actor had just opened off-Broadway in Stephen Lloyd Helper’s play A Sign of the Times when he learned it would close due to the outbreak. While the news wasn’t easy to accept, Muñoz found a way to make lemonade out of the sour situation.

Alongside Jeff Whiting, owner of Open Jar Studios in midtown Manhattan, and Molly Braverman, director of Broadway Green Alliance, an industry-wide initiative encouraging the theater community to implement more environmentally friendly practices, Muñoz co-created the Broadway Relief Project (OpenJarStudios.com/broadwayrelief ). The project has put Broadway seamstresses, actors, and other theater artists to work creating surgical gowns and other personal protective equipment the local government requested in March. To date, it has recruited over 600 volunteers statewide.

“There were so many people who were already trying to implement their own efforts,” Muñoz says of the COVID-19 response in the city. “So instead of having five, six, seven efforts going at the same time, [I thought], Why don’t we all join together and make one Broadway effort? One big umbrella to house all of us and do it together.”

Muñoz has been busy, but it’s certainly nothing new. After launching into international stardom in the global stage smash Hamilton, Muñoz proved himself to be a staunch activist by using his profile to highlight issues like HIV, stigma, #MeToo, and health care.

As a Latino gay man living with HIV who is also a cancer survivor, Muñoz has a perspective that crosses many intersections. He has worked with such organizations as Gay Men’s Health Crisis, RED, and the Latino Commission on AIDS for many years, but organizing something like the Broadway Relief Project takes a new kind of discipline—one that began with deep introspection.

“It’s been an evolution,” Muñoz says of his journey toward finding inner strength. “Everything I experienced since testing 30

positive for HIV in 2002—every positive-thinking construct, every part of me that finds optimism and hope—was certainly created in my journey of living with HIV. And it was triple-fold when I had my cancer battle.”

Muñoz was diagnosed with cancer in October 2015, while he was understudying Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton (he would later replace Miranda as the lead role). He left the show temporarily while he was going through radiation treatments, which began to take a toll on his body.

Eager to strengthen his weakened mind and body while recovering at home, Muñoz filled two bags with socks and began lifting them with his arms as weights. Over a span of many weeks, the pair of socks became five pairs, then eight, then 10. Each increment reminded him there was still life in him yet, and that was a turning point.

“I would stop and meditatively say, ‘Thank you, body. Thank you, Javier, for doing this today. Look at what you accomplished.

You did one set of 10 reps with this exercise, with that many socks in the bag today,’” he reflects. “And the socks eventually became weights, and the weights became me working out again and getting back to physical therapy. And eventually, I went back to my show.”

Muñoz says his health tribulations helped him find the grace to overcome other challenges.

“I look back and I feel like I had one of two choices,” he says. “I could surrender and give up, or I can fight for my life—literally.

So I fought. And in learning how to fight, [I learned how] to not give up on myself, and not give up on my life, my dreams, on wanting to find love in my life, and joy, because I deserve it just as much as anyone else, despite my HIV, despite my cancer battle. Those moments create an inner fire that never goes out.”

It’s not hard to imagine the optimistic Brooklyn-based performer as a talented young kid, eager to enter the world. He can’t help but smile when reminiscing about his Puerto Rican roots and how they’ve defined his identity.

“The first things I think about are food, music, and our holiday traditions,” he says. “Those are the things I think of immediately, and talking to friends about [Puerto Rican delicacies like] empanadas, gandules, pasteles, coquito—realizing people had no idea what coquito was and sharing these things with them— those are the memories I have. And music.”

Like many Latino families, Muñoz grew up with a church community. Saturdays were for sacraments and Sundays were for church dances—with a “live band and DJ, we were 6 or 7 years old and cutting it up!”

“That’s what I...grew up with,” he says. “Those rhythms are in my blood. Those flavors are in my blood. Those traditions are in my blood.”

Muñoz is the first to admit that even in the Latino community, as a non-Spanish speaker, he can feel like an outsider.

Muñoz’s two oldest brothers were fluent in Spanish when they went to school, but as there was no ESL program in place that would teach them English, his parents “had to fight” to get them to regular classes.

“They were afraid that my third oldest brother and myself would have the same struggle, so they taught us only English [at home],” he explains. “That was also a way for my parents to practice English. My mom was trying to get a better job. My dad was trying to get better work.”

Muñoz dice que sus tribulaciones de salud le ayudaron a encontrar la gracia de superar otros desafíos.

“Miro hacia atrás y siento que tuve una de dos opciones,” dice.

“Podría rendirme y darme por vencido, o puedo luchar por mi vida, literalmente. Así que luche. Y al aprender a luchar, [aprendí como] no renunciar a mí mismo, y a no renunciar a mi vida, mis sueños, al querer encontrar el amor en mi vida, y la alegría, porque me lo merezco tanto como cualquier otra persona, a pesar de mi VIH, a pesar de mi batalla contra el cáncer. No es difícil imaginar al optimista artista basado en Brooklyn como un joven talentoso, ansioso por entrar al mundo. No puede evitar sonreír al recordar sus raíces puertorriqueñas y cómo han definido su identidad.

“Lo primero que pienso es en la comida, la música y nuestras tradiciones navideñas,” dice. “Esas son las cosas que pienso de inmediato, y hablar con amigos sobre [delicias puertorriqueñas como] empanadas, gandules, pasteles, coquito, dándose cuenta de que la gente no tenía idea de lo que era coquito—realisando que la gente no tenia una idea que era coquito, y compartiendo estas cosas con ellos—esos son los recuerdos que tengo. Y música.”

While trying to learn Spanish later in life, Muñoz says the biggest obstacle is “the judgment I impose on myself ” when he hears how unnatural he sounds compared to his f luent counterparts. Still, as a Puerto Rican American, you can speak English and still be treated as a second-class citizen.

“I’ve been Latin my whole life. I’ve worn that skin,” he says. “[I was] made to feel smaller and less. When eye contact is being made with all my other friends by my white teacher but they didn’t look at me, I felt that. I absolutely felt that growing up, especially being ‘Javier Muñoz’ and just teaching people how to say my name. Those are real experiences that informed my journey, and it’s significant. Each minority in this country goes through something very specific.”

He adds, “My brown skin has been on me my whole life, and it’s been a source of my pride, really, and my fight. I am as human as anyone else and I deserve to have my dreams come true. I deserve to get an education. I deserve to get a good job. I’m going to fight for it, and I’m going to work hard for it, and I’m going to work harder than a non-minority will. But I deserve to be happy, so I’m going to put in the work.”

When Muñoz began acting in the 1990s, he found the industry consisted mainly of white spaces. However, diversity and inclusion have grown across theater and fi lm—due in no small part to the success of the Tony-winning Hamilton. The show broke ground for casting many people of color. Broadway soon saw other big-budget hits that prominently featured actors of color, such as Hadestown and Ain’t Too Proud.

“I am so grateful to be part of a generation that helped implement that change,” he says. “When I get to turn around and look at my peers, and I mean of all ethnicities—Asian artists, Black artists, and Latin artists, across the board—and I get to walk amongst them, it’s an honor. We have come a long way, and I’ve seen every one of them fight the good fight to get us through those doors and that’s the point. We fight the fight.”

Living in these intersections, he says, has also made him a target for negativity in society. Regardless, the compassion and empathy he’s developed as result of being Latino, gay, HIVpositive, a cancer survivor, and an artist are worth the scars.

“I try my best because I’m an imperfect human,” he says. “I try to take the negativity or aggression that comes my way [and] compartmentalize as best I can and take all the good, all the hope.”

As the country continues to fight the novel coronavirus, Muñoz advises people living with HIV to utilize their stories to help drive the narrative.

“The great disser vice this government, our current administration, has demonstrated is to call [COVID-19] the ‘Chinese virus.’ That is an absolute echo of when the Reagan administration called HIV the ‘gay cancer,’” he says.

“What’s empowering in that situation,” he concludes, “is as people living with HIV and as long-term survivors, we have a skill set for this. We have lived through so much that we can offer a perspective to help others. We can help other people to understand how to live through this moment—emotionally, mentally, and physically—and that’s a gift. That’s a power we have that we can offer.”

Muñoz es el primero en admitir que se siente como extrano en la comunidad Latina porque no habla espanol.

Los dos hermanos mayores de Muñoz hablaban español con fluidez cuando iban a la escuela, pero como no había un programa de ESL en su lugar que les enseñara inglés, sus padres “tenían que luchar” para llevarlos a clases regulares.

Mi mamá estaba tratando de conseguir un mejor trabajo. Mi padre estaba tratando de conseguir un mejor trabajo.”

Mientras intentaba aprender español más adelante en la vida, Muñoz dice que el mayor obstáculo es “el juzgamiento que me impuse yo mismo” cuando se escucha lo antinatural que el suena en comparación con sus contrapartes fluidas. How is COVID-19 affecting your work and concerns?

Manzo-Arroyo: Right now I am working from home full-time and my college courses have been completely moved to online. It has definitely shifted my daily routine. I am privileged enough to be able to work from home and still continue my education. However, I cannot imagine what other people are going through. I will not be able to meet my first nephew, born on March 29, for another couple of weeks. As a gay Latinx DACA recipient, I am worried for those that will potentially lose their income and worried for those that could fall ill and not be able to go to the hospital because of a lack of medical coverage or fear of deportation or cost.

Rios: Soy chicano y de la primera generación, nacido y criado en el suroeste de los Estados-Unidos. Creciendo gay y Latinx fue una manera de constantemente reconfigurar y renegociar mis identidades para que cabrían en las infraestructuras del americanismo, Chicanismo, y de ser queer—las infraestructuras que me dijeron que no funcionarían juntos. What can we do to help our HIV-positive brothers and sisters?

Manzo-Arroyo: Stay home. It is vital to not risk the health of anyone in the time of a pandemic. Check in on your friends; ask how they are doing mentally and physically. Volunteer to help those that need it; ask if you could get them anything from the store or even help them in researching resources. We need to stick together.

Rios: Being that support network and sound board is something each of us can do right now. Checking in, being present, getting groceries and supplies if you are physically and financially able to do so. Donations to food banks and organizations already supporting the HIV-positive community are much-needed forms of support.

¿Qué podemos hacer para ayudar a nuestros hermanos VIH-positivos?

Manzo-Arroyo: Quédense en casa. Es importante que nadie arriesga la salud de ninguna persona durante una pandemia. Repórtense con sus amigos, pregúntenles como están mentalmente y físicamente.

For Latinx people newly diagnosed or new to treatment, having leaders who understand their community is paramount.

By trudy ring W H EN IT COM ES to Latinx people living with HIV, cultural competency is of the utmost importance. That includes having Latinx representation in leadership and staff who understand the multiple issues they may face.

Patrick Whiteside, executive director of Prevention 305 in Miami, which provides clients with HIV prevention and treatment methods, isn’t Latinx himself, but important members of Prevention 305’s staff are. Marco Torrealba, the group’s program director, and Thaydee Mejias, its senior peer navigator, are both of Venezuelan heritage. Miami has a significant population with Venezuelan roots, in addition to its large community of Cuban-Americans. Peer navigators, who work closely with clients to make them comfortable and assure their adherence, need to know where clients are coming from, “both literally and figuratively,” Whiteside says.

Other HIV activists and care providers agree. “The organizations have to mirror the community they’re serving,” says Marco Castro-Bojorquez, cofounder of HIV Racial Justice .

That means realizing that the Latinx population isn’t monolithic; it’s drawn from numerous countries and cultures.

Some Latinx Americans are recent immigrants. Some come from families that have been in the U.S. for centuries.

Some speak English, some Spanish, some Portuguese, some an indigenous language, some another language or any combination of those.

Immigrants face particular issues. They may be wary of seeking care if they lack documentation, and organizations need to assure them they won’t be reported to authorities.

This fear has only been heightened by Donald Trump’s antiimmigrant measures.

Treatment cost can also be an adherence issue even for those who are insured, notes Andrew Spieldenner, vice chair of the U.S. People Living With HIV Caucus. Some pharmacies and insurers limit prescriptions to a 30-day supply, meaning more co-pays and more trips to pharmacies, the latter being particularly undesirable during a pandemic. Castro-Bojorquez adds that training on the cultures of their clients should be required for health care providers—as well as an ability to speak a client’s preferred language and to be aware of other health considerations—if they have mental health issues, for instance, or if they are transgender and on hormone therapy.

Some Latinx-led groups are stepping up. In March, the Translatin@ Coalition and the Latino Commission on AIDS formed a partnership called Corazones Unidos/Hearts United to address the impact of the COVID-19, HIV, hepatitis, and STIs among Latinx people. “Stigma-free community wellness” is one of the partnership’s goals, and it’s something that’s definitely needed, other activists say.

These stigmas often come from health care providers and society as a whole, so fighting them must be a priority.

“Latinx people respond more,” Spieldenner adds, “when they see leadership that looks like them and talks like them.”

El VIH ha levado esta madre y su hijo más íntimos. por Desirée Guerrero Jesús Guillén es un activista, músico, fotógrafo y curandero espiritual. (Pero ahora dice que de alguna manera, la defensa y el activismo se han convertido en una gran parte de mi vida.) Como sobreviviente a largo plazo, ha estado viviendo con el SIDA durante 35 años, y a pesar de todo, su madre, Dolores Solís, de 60 años, ha estado a su lado. ¿Dónde fue nacido?

Fui nacido en una ciudad pequeña llamada Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí, Mexico en una área llamada La Huasteca—la parte del estado conocida para su chocolate, plata y selva tropical. ¿Cómo era la vida de niño?

En serio no era fácil. Era “el hombrecito de la casa.” Mi mamá se casó a los 16 años y a la edad de 21, ya tenía 4 hijos. Estoy seguro de que no era muy fácil para ella tampoco. Creo que siempre era muy sensible y mi abuelo era demasiado “macho” para entenderme. Así mi abuela era mi protectora. Le dijo a mi Mamá que era gay por una carta cuando tenía 30 años. Lo hice porque siempre pensaba que si un día tuviera un amante o esposo, quiero que él sea parte de una familia, mi familia, nuestra familia. Mi mamá me respondió que “me amará como siempre lo soy.” ¿Cuándo y cómo pudo decirle a su madre sobre su estado VIH? Esperé, fueron unos años (después de mi diagnóstico)...quería que ella viera que estaba bien físicamente...Simplemente dije: “Por cierto mamá, soy VIH positivo, pero como puedes ver, estoy bien.” Hubo mucho silencio y pude ver que estaba temblando. Ella empezó a llorar. La abracé y le dije: “Está bien, puedes ver que estoy bien.” ¿Cómo describirías a tu madre a alguien que nunca la conoció? ¡Es una diva! Hay un dicho en español, “Antes muerta que sencilla” (más o menos “Prefiero estar muerta que simple”): a ella le gusta verse bien y nunca se mostrará sin maquillaje. Mis amigos la aman especialmente mis amigos homosexuales...Ella ha apoyado los problemas LGBTQ y VIH.

¿Qué tan importante ha sido para ti tener el continuo amor y apoyo de tu madre?

Me encanta tenerla a mi lado cuando estamos en una protesta o una manifestación, muestra que no todas las familias especialmente los latinos, no están empujando a sus hijos e hijas fuera de sus hogares... Espero que sigamos entendiendo nuestro viaje y ayudándonos unos a otros (a medida que envejecemos) pero también necesitamos apoyo de la comunidad y apoyo social. No somos los únicos que exploramos el cuidado mientras nos ocupamos de nuestros propios problemas de salud.

Como un ser humano increible, el cual entepone su salud por apoyar y ayudar a quien lo necesita, ademas de ser alegre, positivo y sensible. ¿Como reaccionaste cuando te enteraste que Jesús era gay?

Fue difícil para ti aceptarlo?

My primera reaccion? Miedo, no por su preferencia sino a que ya se empezaba a escuchar de que el ser gay era sinonimo de SIDA y era muerte rapida y dolorosa. Lo amo por ser un humano ejemplar, un ser humano increible y un mejor hijo. ¿Como te sentiste cuando primero te enteraste que Jesús era VIH positive? Como lidiaste con eso?

Repito miedo, pues las noticias eran muy tristes y se decía que morirían en corto tiempo y siempre con la angustia de tenerlo lejos fue y sigue siendo angustiante para mi, pues veo su sufrimiento y no puedo hacer nada para remediarlo. Le ruego a dios día a día que encuentren la cura a esa enfermedad. ¿Desafortunadamente, muy a seguido en comunidades Latinx, muchos padres rechazan a sus hijos que son gay o que están viviendo con VIH porque sus creencias religiosas o estigmas culturales. Que consejos les darías a los padres pasando por esto? Tienes razon, la mayoría de los Latinos, sobre todo los hombres, son criados como machos y si en un momento son delicados o sensibles eso no es aceptado: LOS HOMBRES NO DEBEN LLORAR se decia en casa. Antes de juzgar tenemos que comprender que el mundo los tiene estigmatizados por todo y eso es muy doloroso.

BE WELL CUÍDENSE

DO PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV HAVE EXTRA REASON TO WORRY ABOUT COVID-19? YES AND NO. ¿LAS PERSONAS VIVIENDO CON VIH TIENEN RAZONES ADICIONALES PARA PREOCUPARSE POR COVID-19? SÍ Y NO.

COVID-19 has affected everyone’s life this year. Even those who have not experienced the potentially deadly virus personally or seen a loved one come down with it have dealt with its consequences, such as stay-at-home orders and business closures.

People living with HIV are, for the most part, very aware of health hazards. Everyone, positive or negative, is at risk of contracting the airborne virus, but there is no evidence to suggest that poz people are at higher risk. The risk of serious complications from COVID-19 in poz folks is unknown, but it is likely minimized if people are adherent to their medications and virally suppressed. But for those who are not and/or have a low CD4 cell count, the risk is greater.

Keeping meds on hand is crucial in case of quarantine or interruptions in the supply chain.

“Experts advise that people living with HIV should have a minimum 30-day supply of medications, be up to date with flu and pneumonia vaccines, and have a clinical care plan in place in case they are quarantined,” Sean Cahill of Fenway Health wrote recently in the online edition of The Advocate, a sister publication of Plus.

It’s a good idea to take advantage of pharmacy delivery services to cut down on the time you spend in public.

Many health care providers are focusing on the pandemic, so they are limiting in-person appointments for other conditions, meaning HIV treatment is largely shifted to telemedicine for the time being. Because of this, it’s also good to stay in touch with your team and get comfortable with communicating via online conference calls.

Keep an eye on your other health conditions. People with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, heart disease, or other serious conditions are at heightened risk for major complications from COVID-19. Smoking puts you at higher risk as well.

men and African-Americans, also are overrepresented when it comes to those risk factors. They also work disproportionately in jobs where they are likely to be exposed to the virus, and they have higher rates of poverty and may lack health insurance. In some cities, African-Americans have accounted for COVID-19 cases and deaths far out of proportion to their numbers in the population.

Trans women and LGBTQ people of color are particularly at risk of discrimination and stigma when seeking care. Young people may be sheltering at home with families who aren’t supportive, and older LGBTQ Americans may be isolated, without family or close friends. Older people in general have a heightened risk of serious complications from COVID-19. Those over 50 and living with HIV are more likely to have comorbidities that may increase their risks.

If you have the means, this is the time to donate to organizations that serve people living with HIV, especially those from marginalized populations. It’s also time to take care of yourself.

People with HIV, like everyone else, should follow social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders.

Get your nutrition, but limit your food-shopping trips or use delivery services. Get your exercise while still praticing social distancing. PRIDE 2020 WILL BE UNLIKE ANY OTHER

LGBTQ Pride events will be online, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be satisfying.

Typically, the best part of a LGBTQ Pride celebration is the party. But this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, hundreds of Pride festivals from London to Los Angeles have been postponed or canceled.

Experts say those who will be most affected by the loss of Pride events are isolated LGBTQ people and those living with HIV. In acknowledgement of the importance of these events, major Pride organizers from around the world have come together to plan an onlineonly, 24-hour Global Pride event set for June 27, which will offer virtual musical performances, lectures, and more—beach bodies not required.

“Evidence exists that community support is beneficial for mental health, and there is emerging evidence that online support group participation is associated with improvement in a number of mental health outcomes,” says Alex Keuroghlian, MD, MPH, and director of education and training programs for the Fenway Institute at Fenway Health in Boston.

“While we’re familiar with the social benefits of meeting in person, connecting online allows us to meet with a lot of people who could not otherwise all travel to the same place,” Keuroghlian adds.

When it comes to HIV, those who live with the virus often feel as if it’s a mistake they can never make up for. It may feel like it will forever diminish any future deeds or successes you may accomplish, but this feeling—whether it stems from HIV or any other regrets—is a result of self-induced shame and guilt.

HIV isn’t a mistake or a mark against you, but believing that you are lesser than because of it certainly is.

A life without mistakes or missteps is not a life at all, or at least not one that sounds interesting. A life worth mentioning is filled with excitement and regret, love and heartbreak, adventures and mistakes—and yes, the risk of catching an STI. Sure, it’s a good idea to avoid what will obviously harm you (sexually or otherwise), but personal growth comes from the aftermath of doing things we regret. Unfortunately, the social stigma and 44

blinding fear associated with HIV often hinders people from seeing that truth.

Many poz people choose to live in the shadow of their former selves and believe they will never have that life back.

Meanwhile, the pieces are sitting in front of them waiting to be put together again—into a new, improved, restored, renovated, and upgraded self.

Living with HIV can be like learning to hold your breath under water. Your lungs feel as if they’re going to explode, and you want to escape to anywhere but here. But soon, the suffering and desperation subside and you find peace under the surface while you continue to explore depths you once thought were impossible to reach.

I’ve met too many people that remained frozen in the moment they first heard their doctor say, “HIV-positive.” Years later, they have yet to peek from behind tightly clasped hands, wet from tears, and find the light once more. This self-imposed imprisonment is the tragedy of HIV, and it’s an affront to the people who fought so hard to live, yet lost the battle.

It’s time to embrace the beauty of mistakes by forgiving yourself right now.

Don’t waste another minute punishing yourself for something that cannot be undone. Instead, find the lesson in it— however difficult or hopeless you think the situation may be—then tuck it in your pocket and get on with your life.

Learning how to forgive yourself for an HIV diagnosis, or anything else, is the easiest way to be freed from the opinions and judgments of others. It is a way to open up and allow the things you want back into your life by releasing control of the things you don’t. Never give up your claim to happiness. Fight for it.

Breathe. Dive deep. And explore the beauty of the underwater world.

A M O N G T H E H E R O E S emerging in the COVID-19 outbreak is Anthony Fauci, perhaps the most trusted man in America, who also happens to be a man widely considered one of the heroes of the AIDS epidemic.

Fauci has been unafraid to speak the truth about the new coronavirus strain and counter the misinformation put out by Donald Trump (despite seeing Trump retweet #FireFauci). Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, Fauci was dealing with AIDS almost from the time it was first identified.

In the 1980s, Fauci read about gay and bi men in major American cities developing Pneumocystis pneumonia, a disease rarely seen outside cancer patients and people with severely depressed immune systems. After reading the second report on the outbreak of PCP in men who seemed otherwise healthy, Fauci, who was interested in researching infectious diseases, began a deep dive into the issue.

Eventually, his work led to a career change. What would soon be dubbed gay-related immune deficiency, or GRID, then became known as acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, and eventually, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), was identified as the cause.

When Fauci became director of NIAID, at a time when the median survival time after an AIDS diagnosis was 28 weeks, he and other federal government officials, including President Ronald Reagan, were criticized for a slow response.

Reagan may not have taken the criticism to heart, but Fauci did.

“When the activists started to appropriately react to the rigidity of the clinical trials [to research anti-HIV drugs], for instance, they started storming the NIH and burning people like me in effigies, and Larry Kramer, now a close friend, was calling me a murderer,” he told the Science Speaks blog in 2011. “The best thing I’ve done from a sociological and community standpoint was to embrace the activists. Instead of rejecting them, I listened to them.”

Kramer, it should be noted, has remained willing to criticize Fauci, as he did in a 2015 Advocate commentary, saying Fauci and other government health leaders were dragging their feet on an AIDS cure.

But “we are friends again,” Kramer told The New York Times this year, in the midst of the current pandemic.

In the 1980s, Fauci helped to speed up clinical trials and open them to patients who had been rejected earlier. The first treatment for HIV, AZT, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1987, but it was hardly a panacea, as it had many side effects. Fauci also oversaw research into drugs that proved life-changing and life-extending for people with HIV, the combination therapies introduced in 1996.

Fauci counts the development of these drugs as one of his career

highlights, along with playing a major role in formulating President George W. Bush’s program to fight HIV and AIDS overseas, which became known as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR. Fauci is an advocate for making treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis—the HIV prevention strategy known as PrEP—more widely accessible, and he’s still enthusiastic about research into an HIV vaccine, despite recent setbacks.

Fauci hasn’t been afraid to contradict Trump’s unrealistically positive projections about COVID-19.

After Trump said a vaccine would be available soon, Fauci told reporters no, it would be more like 12 to 18 months. He also corrected Trump’s talk about a cure to say there was a greater possibility of a treatment to lessen symptoms and there was no basis for the president’s prediction that COVID-19 would be gone by spring. But he always makes such corrections tactfully.

“There are a lot of world-class scientists, but Tony has a special set of skills,” Donna Shalala, former secretary of Health and Human Services and now a member of the U.S. House, told the Times.

“An ability to communicate, high integrity, and an understanding of politics—and to know to stay out of politics in order to protect scientists.”

MIAMI/DADE COUNTY HIV/AIDS PARTNERSHIP (AIDSNET.ORG) A partnership of people living with HIV, caregivers, Ryan White Program service providers, government representatives, and other community members, its vision is to eliminate disparities and improve health outcomes for all people living with or at risk for HIV. In addition to information and application links for Ryan White medical and drug-cost assistance programs, it offers a ton of helpful links and referrals to other vital HIV resources, such as where to get free testing, PrEP, housing, mental health services, and substance abuse recovery.

TEST MIAMI (TESTMIAMI.ORG) Test Miami offers some useful educational and community services in addition to testing and prevention. Besides it handy HIV 101 video that covers HIV basics, Test Miami has in-person educational sessions aimed at folks at a higher risk of becoming poz or who are already living with HIV but are in need of resources and support. And of course, as its name strongly suggests, it offers free preventive education and STI testing, including screenings for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis via its mobile testing unit.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ADOLESCENT COUNSELING & TESTING SERVICES (PROMOTE2PREVENT.ORG) This community health center is a great place for teens and young adults to get HIV and other STI screenings, especially if it’s their first time doing so. The warm and informative staff has helped thousands of young people through the process of HIV testing and after-care. The center is located at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine near downtown Miami, and its services are open to all. It offers free HIV and STD testing services for adolescents and young adults, including pre- and post-test counseling.

“The staff is very friendly and make you feel comfortable during the pretest as well as the post-test,” one young client wrote in a Google review.

Another wrote that the incredible staff will “make you feel so comfortable when getting tested and more importantly make many resources available to you.”
