Blue is the rarest color found in nature and many plants and animals (such as butterflies) that appear blue don’t actually contain this pigment; rather, it is the laws of physics and certain structures on the surfaces of the flora and fauna that cause blue to be the only wavelength of light that is reflected. The light is indeed bouncing off of the butterflies on the Blue Felicity Ginger Jar but in this case we know that this sparkling blue color story is not solely explained by physics but is also the result of talented, artistic hands painting a chromatic narrative on a crisp, white porcelain surface.

A figurine that seems to be vibrating with strength, pride and virility, the artists at Herend clearly revere this apex predator and have honored the lion with an exquisite porcelain likeness. His expressive face and the large, bountiful mane (which serves to protect the lion during battle and intimidate competing males) are rendered in natural coloration to meticulously capture all the nuances of this powerful feline. To claim him as one of their own, the artists have also layered in Herend’s signature fishnet pattern to add character and vibrancy thereby cementing the lion’s title as King of the Jungle.

American Goldfinches are likely attendees at any backyard buffet but an experienced host knows that these guests will attend a summer soiree en masse if sunflowers are on the menu. A favorite food of these avian acrobats, they can often be found hanging upside down in the pursuit of their beloved seeds. To fully capture the brilliant yellow that the males of the species display in the summer, the artists at Herend have used a sparkling gold fishnet with a yellow undercoat. Completing this happy scene are a cheery sunflower and a busy bee (goldfinches are vegetarians so these two happily coexist).

Known both as Roosevelt Elk and Olympic Elk, since the largest unmanned herd resides in Olympic National Park in Washington State, this magnificent bull will surely be the king of the rut this season. One of the largest land mammals in North America, the artists at Herend have honored this majestic animal simply by highlighting his already impressive features.

The brilliant sheen of 24K gold seems to bounce off every point of his imposing antlers. Then, only an ombre fishnet painting style could properly capture the elk’s signature camouflage coat which starts dark brown at the head becomes paler on the body and ends with a distinctive light-colored rump (which is why elk are also called “wapiti” which is Shawnee for “white rump”).
