Almost as if they are conspiring together, a ladybug momentarily distracts a woodpecker so that the grub can make his getaway. Even if the woodpecker lost this round, his strong bill and sticky, barbed tongue ensure that he won’t be hungry for long. Although the insect population may disagree, woodpeckers are welcome additions to forests due to their ability to protect trees from mass infestations of pests. In this case the woodpecker also provides a vibrant contrast to the surrounding arboreal colors with rust and gray fishnet on his head and body offset by dramatic 24K gold highlights on his wings and tail feathers.

Hopefully mother bird is an early riser and got her worm because she clearly has a hungry chick on her hands with more about to come! One thing she has to be less concerned about is safety because father bird created the perfect little home for this songbird family and wove a tight little nest hidden among the tree branches. Of course, like all discerning women, she tested his building skills first and only picked the suitor that offered her the best sanctuary.

While the scene is sweetly familiar, what is new is the type of bird. Bird watchers should rejoice in seeing this recently discovered species which originated in Hungary but is starting to be spotted by birders all over North America. With dramatic plumage in raspberry, various shades of orange and 24K gold, sightings are starting to come in from east to west coast as this new species clearly establishes itself in a new location.

With their origins in China, Herend’s Foo dogs are the perfect models to be dressed in the dramatic Chinoiserie pattern called Macao. This pattern first made its debut at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair where it, among other patterns on display, led to the Herend manufactory winning a gold medal. The saturated tones of Macao are due to the fact that the pattern is painted in enamel colors. Enamel painting is a very difficult process in that the enamel has a unique density and more layers than normal are applied to create the rich pigmentation.

However, it is a balancing act of beauty versus technical constraints because if one layer is applied unevenly, it can prevent the paint from adhering to the piece. Therefore, only seasoned artists, with their skills and knowledge, are entrusted with working with enamel colors.

A master painter has devoted 38 hours lacing together the vast Herend catalog by embarking on a trip to the east to capture elements of Chinoiserie followed by a swing to England to make a deep curtsey to the Queen. An invitation to dine at the table of a famous banking family lures him back to the continent after which he finally returns to his own backyard where fruits and flowers beckon from Herend patterns new and old.
