Gene Ireland Beef Sire Directory Spring 2021
Introduction We are delighted to present you with the latest catalogue of beef bulls that are now available through the Gene Ireland program. The breeding program is a joint initiative between Pedigree Breeders, Commercial farmers, Breed Societies, AI Companies, DAFM & ICBF. The aim of the program is to progeny test high index beef bulls which will produce profitable cows for the suckler beef industry. The minimum criteria for a bull to be included on the panel is 5 Stars across breed on Replacement Index. This year we have also added a section dedicated to high Terminal Index bulls which are selected to produce profitable animals for sale or slaughter. The minimum criteria for a bull to be included in the Terminal section is 5 Stars across breed on Terminal Index. In order to avail of straws from the Terminal bulls section, a herdowner must order the same number of straws from the Replacement section.
The Benefits If you contact ICBF (023-8820452) and order semen from any of the bulls in this catalogue you will receive the following benefits: Access to the highest index new beef bulls in Irish AI at €5 per straw (technician charges may apply) Straws delivered to your own tank or the technician of your choosing Progress towards meeting the BDGP targets Potentially sell some of the progeny back to ICBF for performance testing at the Tully Beef Test Centre. Freedom to choose whatever combination of bulls & breeds that you require from the catalogue.

The class of Autumn 2020, who sired them? The second half of 2020 saw 182,378 beef calves (beef sire x beef dam) born on Irish farms, of which 44367 have been registered to AI sires. Evaluation based on the January 2021 run.
These 10 bulls account for 30% of all the AI progeny born in the second half of 2020. The list is comprised of well proven Limousin and Charolais sires. These 10 bulls have an average Replacement Index of €125 which is 5 Stars across breeds with relatively high reliability across all the bulls and very high in some cases. Encouragingly, 7 of the 10 bulls listed above have graduated from Beef Gene Ireland over the years which highlights the value of the program for progeny testing young bulls and driving the rate of genetic gain by building higher reliabilities on indexes at a young age via robust data recording. Every Spring and Autumn a new panel of young high genetic merit bulls are made available to farmers for just €5 per straw.

Gene Ireland Profile
Justin Walsh
Justin Walsh runs a herd of 100 commercial suckler cows in a split calving system near the ancient Hill of Tara in Co. Meath. He also works part time as a weight recorder for ICBF in the Meath area. The average Replacement Index of the cows in the herd is an impressive €100 compared to the national average of €83. He has been a user of Gene Ireland straws for the last 7 years and currently over half the animals in the herd are sired by Gene Ireland bulls. He is also an active participant in the BDGP and BEEP-S schemes. The herd is comprised mainly of Charolais, Limousin and Simmental cows with a small amount of Angus and Aubrac introduced in recent years. The progeny are generally sold as stores and he has found selling the Gene Ireland progeny to ICBF for research at Tully as being a useful extra outlet for his stock. All the replacement heifers are sired by AI bulls with the ICBF indexes being used to identify sires strong for milk and growth whilst also maintaining calving ease. Some of the Gene Ireland sires that worked well for him over the years are ETP, ZAG, APZ and SI2152. One of the standout cows in Justins herd is IE281611260410. Sired by the former Gene Ireland Simmental sire APZ (Curaheen Apostle) and born in January 2014, this cow first calved at 24 months and has produced a quality calf every year for 5 years. She currently has a Replacement Index of €134 and her first daughter has been retained in the herd for breeding. This cow is a great example of what can be achieved in the suckler beef industry through a combination of genetics and top-class management.
