Table 1 summary • Of the beef breeds that have been brought into Ireland - the Hereford, Shorthorn & Angus breeds are here by far the longest. • The continental beef breeds first started to be imported in the 1960’s and 70’s. Charolais, Simmental, Limousin & Blonde d’Aquitaine were the breeds that were first brought into Ireland. • The 1980’s & 90’s saw 5 more foreign breeds introduced to these shores – namely Belgian Blue, Piedmontese, Aubrac, Salers & Parthenaise.

Table 2 summary • Almost 90% of all pedigree beef calves come from 5 breeds: Limousin, Charolais, Angus, Hereford & Simmental. – The remaining 10% of calves are from 7 different breeds: Aubrac, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Belgian Blue, Parthenaise, Piedmontese, Saler & Shorthorn (Graph 1). • 65% of all pedigree calves born in 2015 were sired by Irish Sires. • Consequently, 35% of all pedigree calves, across the breeds, born in 2015, were sired by foreign sires. – These foreign Sires originated from 11 different countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, UK & USA (Graph 2). – Within the various breeds, the proportion of calves sired by foreign sires varies from 13% (Hereford) to 82% (Belgian Blue) (Graph 3).

Table 3 summary • The Limousin breed has retained its status of being the number 1 breed in terms of numbers of pedigree calves born. • The Angus breed has grown the most in terms of pedigree numbers in recent years and is now the 2nd most popular pedigree breed with the Charolais breed in 3rd place (Graphs 4 & 5). • The proportion of pedigree calves sired by Irish bulls has remained at 65%. • The UK has also retained its place as being the most popular foreign source of sires of pedigree calves (16%), just ahead of France (14%).

Table 4 summary • 55% of all pedigree calves are sired by AI Sires. The proportion of calves sired by AI Sires ranges from 20% (Piedmontese) to 91% (Belgian Blue) (Graph 7). • 45% of calves were sired by Stockbulls. Within the various breeds, the proportion of calves sired by Stockbulls ranges from 9% (Belgian Blue) to 80% (Piedmontese) (Graph 8).
