LETTER FROM THE AIRSHOW ORGANIZER

Dear Moses Lake Airshow Fans,

This is our 4th year of the Moses Lake Airshow – thank you for being here! While we have gained a great deal of experience over those years, we are still a relative newbie and continuing to navigate the airshow landscape. We’ve found ourselves with an event unique to most other shows for many reasons. So I thought I’d share some of the ways this event you’re attending stands out in the air show world.

ATTENDANCE: “How far did you travel?”

Airshows typically take place in larger population areas, with much of the attendance coming from within 50 of the show. Typically, just 20% drive from further away to attend.

By comparison, 80% of you attending the Moses Lake Airshow have commuted 50+ miles, and 32% of you drove 100+ miles (and likely stay the night.) In either case, 4 out of 5 people you see here today do not live in Moses Lake or Grant County.

CREATIVITY: “Thinking outside of the box”

At the Moses Lake Airshow, we look for and try things other airshows haven’t.

• Saturday’s 4 Marine F-35B’s flyover is rare and a first for a small Airshow like Moses Lake.

• Moses Lake is the North American Airshow debut for the Vampire U-1229. Built in Switzerland 1959 for the Swiss Air Force it later became known as the Queen’s Plane flying at royal occasions until it arrived here in Moses Lake.

• The Veterans’ Hospitality Chalet is our attempt to bring together government, non-profit and veteran-owned organizations, offering benefits and services to the men and women who served. Please stop by and thank them for their service.

• Check out Alice! Built by Eviation in Arlington, Washington and flight testing here in Moses Lake, she is a prototype, electric commuter aircraft on static display. Someday soon you might fly in one of Alice’s offspring.

• Stop by the STEAM area and try your hand at piloting a plane in the USAF virtual reality flight simulator. See if you have the “Right Stuff”.

• RC Demonstration: Inside the Airbox where today’s performers are flying, is our new 1,250’ x 85’ Radio Control Aircraft runway installed just this week courtesy of our Supporting Sponsors Inland Tarp and Advanced Excavations. This state-of-the-art fabric runway is in preparation for the 2024 inaugural RC Airshow. It will bring some of the best pilots in North America flying up to ¼ size RC Aircraft of all types... including Jets, helecopters and drones!

2024 Airshow ticket will include admission to both the RC Airshow and our Regular Airshow. Make sure you sign up to receive updates and ticket information here... https://moseslakeairshow.com/air-show-insights/

Try to take the Survey offered by our volunteers as you exit the Airshow, your opinions are important. Thank you for attending the 2023 Moses Lake Airshow, we really appreciate your support.

Best regards,

U.S. NAVY EA-18 GROWLER

The EA-18G Growler first went into production in 2004 and made its first flight in 2006. The Growler is a variant of the F/A-18 family of aircraft and combines the F/A-18F Super Hornet platform with electronic warfare. This aircraft specializes in jamming enemy defense systems and protecting U.S. electronic systems. In 2015, it officially finished replacing the EA-6B Prowler, the U.S. Navy’s previous electronic warfare aircraft.

Did you know?

• The crew of a Growler consists of one Pilot and one Weapons Systems Officer

• The U.S. Navy is the only branch of the U.S. Military that operates the Growlers

U.S. AIR FORCE C-17 GLOBEMASTER III

After taking its first flight in 1991, The C-17 Globemaster III was delivered to Joint Charleson Air Force Base in 1993. After two years of tests, it was declared operationally ready in 1995. This massive aircraft was tasked with the job of transporting equipment, supplies, and troops all over the world. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 585,000 pounds and flies as fast as 590mph. The C-17 can land on a small airfield in 3,000 feet or less.

Did you know?

• It can haul the Army’s main battle tank the M-1 Abrams, or three combat-ready Stryker Vehicles, or six Guardian Armored Security Vehicles

• It holds 33 world records – more than any airlifter in history

6

USMC F-35B LIGHTNING II

The F-35B is the F-35 Lightning II variant used by the United States Marine Corps. The STO/VL capability inherent in the F-35 “B” variant allows the Marine Corps to operate expeditiously and from remote locations, making the model uniquely qualified at supporting expeditionary advanced base operations.

On Saturday, the Moses Lake Airshow will receive unique treat, when four F-35Bs from VFMA-214, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. VFMA-214 just received these aircraft in March of 2022, replacing the AV-8B Harrier.

WINGS OF BLUE

The Wings of Blue have a long standing commitment to personal and organizational excellence as well as a storied history of success. While the airspace that the Wings of Blue operates in is one of the busiest in the world, their drop zone is one of the safest.

The primary mission of the Wings of Blue is to run the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Basic Freefall Parachuting course, known as Airmanship 490 (AM-490). The team serves primarily as jumpmasters and instructors, forging leaders of character through this unique training experience.

YELLOW THUNDER

David and Drew Watson will bring their Harvard Mk4 and Harvard Mk IIb to the Moses Lake Airshow for a thrilling duo performance. The Harvard began life as a North American Aviation-designed aircraft around 1934, commonly identified in the USA as the AT-6 Texan (Advanced Trainer). Early Harvard models were built in California by North American Aviation, while the later Harvards were built under license by Canadian Car & Foundry (Thunder Bay) and Noorduyn Aviation (Montreal). Many Harvards served under the British Commonweath Air Training Plan (BCATP) in Canada.

This Harvard Mk 4, CCF 4-34, was built by the Canadian Car & Foundry company in Thunder Bay, and rolled off the production line in 1952. This Harvard Mk IIb was a United Kingdom contribution to the BCATP, and was built for the RCAF in Inglewood, California in 1942.

VAMPIRE AIRSHOWS DE HAVILLAND U-1229

The de Havilland DH-115 is the world’s first single engine jet fighter! Development of the aircraft began during the Second World War in 1943 as an aircraft suitable for combat that harnessed the new innovation of jet propulsion; it was quickly decided to opt for a single-engine, twin-boom aircraft equipped with the Halford H.1 turbojet engine, which was later known as the de Havilland Goblin. Originally ordered as an experimental aircraft only, the decision to mass-produce the aircraft as an interceptor for the Royal Air Force (RAF) was finalized in May 1944.

The Vampire was quickly used to replace many wartime piston-engine fighter aircraft. The RAF operated it as a front-line fighter until 1953. The U-1229 performing at the air show comes from Gerald Conley and Vampire Airshows, and it is making its North American debut!

In 2015, Kyle completed his Commercial Pilot’s License. Now Kyle performs all over the country in his unique 1986 Long EZ. While not capable of aggressive aerobatics, the Long EZ makes up for it with its unique look. It can cruise at 184 mph and has a max speed of 230 mph.

TOM LARKIN | MINI JET AIRSHOWS

Mini Jet Airshows was a lifelong dream of Tom Larkin. Tom has over 9,000 hours total time in over 55 different aircraft, with 8,000 of those hours being in jets. Mini Jet Airshows features a SubSonex Jet (JSK003), from the SubSonex factory in Oshkosh, WI. This Experimental Jet was the first kit of its kind ever sold and flown. It can go up to 300 mph and it fully aerobatic.

He is an unlimited category competitor, and flies airshow performance flights in the United States and Japan.

The Pitts Special S-2S was built by Mr. Timothy Just, and first flown in 2003. The aircraft has Wolfpro Pitts wings with oversized control surfaces and a tuned 330 HP engine which make this classic plane perform in a different dimension from other planes. With its iconic, traditional red and white paint, classic rounded wing tips and beautiful lines in the air and on the ground; the Pitts Special is a favorite among air show fans.

TAKING CONTROL

As the Moses Lake Airshow continues to grow in attendance each year, so does the show itself. We aim to give fans a unique airshow experience that will create stories for years to come and inspire future generations of aviators.

A big new addition in the works this year is our RC Demonstration. The extent of our dedication to the future of Remote Control (RC) aviation in Moses Lake can be seen in the imagery here, as we have installed a 1200’ runway dedicated to RC Demonstrations! This incredible feat couldn’t have been possible without the help of Advanced Excavation and Inland Tarp & Liner. These this display in full force!
