Healthy Tea Trends for 2017

I

n the dead of winter, after the rich food and drink of the hectic holiday season, the soothing benefits of tea are warmly welcomed.

There is something peaceful and calming about making tea – fill the kettle with cold water (always cold), turn on the burner to boil the water, gaze out the window at the winter garden while the water is boiling.

Gaze back at the kettle and wonder why it’s taking so long?

Pour the boiling water over the tea to let it steep and gaze out the window again while contemplating the return of spring.

Between herbal tea, fruit tea and black tea, there are so many choices one can never be bored with what to drink.

Matcha and Yerba Mate If you haven’t heard of Matcha tea yet, you’ve missed out on one of the biggest trends for 2016.

Matcha tea and Matcha tea lattes have been drunk in cafés across the country as consumers moved towards healthier choices than coffee.

But there’s a new tea trend brewing on the horizon.

It also starts with the same letter and has a deep cultural past.

Mate, aka Yerba Mate, has been drunk for centuries in latin countries like Paraguay as it boasts many health benefits.

It is full of vitamins A, C and E as well as minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, phosphorous and zinc) but also packs a caffeine wallop.

So it’s a great way to start the day instead of drinking coffee.

Think of it as a healthy pre-workout drink. Maybe blue collar workers or anyone else who does physical labour all day will appreciate the benefits of Mate.

Rooibos

Rooibos (South African for red bush) has become a popular herbal tea that is seeing many combinations. This light red herbal tea is completely free of caffeine and has no oxalic acid so it can be con4

sumed by those who have kidney stones.

It has many health benefits due to the alpha hydroxy acid and phenolic compounds and antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin. Rooibos tea is rich in minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, copper,manganese, zinc and magnesium.

Drinking rooibos will ease severe stomach cramps, bring relief from asthma and related conditions, relieve headaches and insomnia, allergies, eczema, weak bones and hypertension.

It can be drunk all day long with no side effects however it does have a few contraindications for those with existing kidney and liver conditions so check with your health care provider.

Rooibos combines well with many herbs used in tea. Popular rooibos combinations include vanilla rooibos, chai rooibos, chamomile rooibos, peppermint rooibos. Experiment and create your own combination.

Green Tea Combos

Green tea popularity has taken off and not just as a stand alone tea. Herbal and fruit combinations have made green tea more popular. Green tea has many health benefits and is a natural energizer.

How about a green tea cherry lemon combo? Or perhaps green tea with chamomile and peppermint?

If you can’t find a commercial tea combo you like, experiment and try your own combos with dried or fresh herbs.

Top Wellness Trends for 2017 When people start thinking about health for the New Year, the top trends grab attention.

If it’s popping the latest pill or drinking a new smoothie, we’re willing to give it a try especially if it is simple and easy to do.

Yes, we all know that getting fit and being healthy requires effort. But it’s human nature to look for shortcuts and we want something that makes being healthy more fun and enjoyable.

Swap the coffee for a new tea drink, like yerba matcha (see article on Tea Trends).

So, with trends from Google to back things up, here’s a look at some top trends starting with something that’s going to always be popular in winter – soup.

Soup Trend

If you’re tired of juicing or just never bothered to give it a go, expect the soup cleanse to replace juicing. It’s an easy healthy meal to make and eat all week.

With it being January, soup is going to be popular and warm the body instead of making it cold from drinking cold juices.

A soup ‘cleanse’ is also healthier as it won’t cause headaches or energy crashes and will fill the body up.

Soup can also help people who want to lose weight without feeling deprived as soup is a whole food.

A bone broth can provide benefits of reduced inflammation, improve digestion and joint repair.

So what are some examples of a soup cleanse?

How about a Miso soup with shiitake mushrooms and ginger along with kombu and tamari?

Or a creamy ginger carrot soup?

A spring pea soup uses herbs like basil, oregano, cumin and garlic. Try an immune boosting smoky broccoli soup with cayenne, paprika, garlic and sweet onions.

It’s a vegan Ayurveda inspired recipe which provides all the right ingredients for a cold winter’s day.

Longevity Foods

You’ve heard of superfoods. Now it’s time to start thinking about and looking for ‘longevity food.’

A longevity food is any food that will help you live longer with anti-oxidants, healthy fats or a super blend of vitamins and minerals, for example. Below are a few you can expect to see in your 2017 diet if you’re not already using them.

Avocado Oil

According to Google trends, expect to see a surge in interest starting in January. Avocado oil will be the new coconut oil predict experts at Livestrong.

Avocado oil has many health benefits such as lowering blood pressure, relieving arthritis and psoriasis.

Black Garlic

The health benefits of garlic are well-know and it really packs a flavourful punch in many recipes.

For those who want something with a little less punch, black garlic has a less pungent flavor but nearly twice the antioxidants of fresh garlic.

It only made its debut in Western market in the past several but has long been valued as a staple in Asia.

Black garlic has powerful anti-oxidants to protect cells from disease and increase longevity.

It’s flavor is considered more gentle and sweet flavor so it is a versatile superfood too. Just add it to any recipe that calls for regular garlic. Here’s the best part – no garlic breath.

In Japan you can find Frito-Lay Black Garlic Doritos.

Black garlic isn’t another type of garlic – it is actually regular garlic cloves that are heated slowly over several weeks until they carmelize. It’s reputed to have a tender almost jelly like texture with a melt in your mouth consistency.

Dragon Fruit

This bright pink fruit with the scales that give it its name make it hard to ignore when you see it in the market or grocery store aisle. This pretty anti-aging fruit has high levels of vitamin C and carotene. The delicious fruit with the interesting name has been growing in popularity over the years. That is expected to increase with the trend in dragon fruit smoothie bowls

Watermelon Water

Move over coconut water. Watermelon water is the new elixir. Watermelon water is the new coconut water and is cold-pressed watermelon.

Watermelon is a powerful source of vitamin C plus flavonoids such as lutein, lycopene, and beta-carotene.

These antioxidants protect the body against free radicals, which can cause inflammation, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, strokes, and heart attack and can also lessen skin damage caused by the sun. According to Google trends, watermelon water will steadily rise in popularity with a spike around June.

Maca Powder

If you've ever tried maca (I use it – its amazing) then expect to see this herbal adaptogen everywhere in 2017.

Maca is a Peruvian root vegetable which is reputed to promote energy, stamina, fertility, and sex drive in both genders.

Maca is also useful for peri-menopausal and menopausal women. As a rich source of B vitamins; vitamins C, D and E; iron; copper; and potassium, maca powder provides a simple way to increase your micronutrient intake.

It is also an anti-oxidant and has amino acids which make it good for the skin and good for balancing hormones.

Adaptogen Ashwagandha

Here’s another adaptogen that is expected to become more popular. Ashwagandha helps the body adapt to stress and is reputed to improve sleep quality, something many people need. Pregnant women or those taking immunosuppressants, sedatives, or thyroid hormone medication should avoid Ashwagandha.

It’s an ancient Ayurvedic herb that is reputed to reduce blood sugar levels, reduce cortisol levels, reduce stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression and can help boost testosterone and increase fertility in men. Ashwagandha provides support for menopausal women, boosts memory and is a mood booster.

Nutritional Yeast

This yeast with the cheesy, nutty flavor is also known as "nooch," .

How to Have Healthy Hair

I

t all started with a head massage

According to Wikipedia, the word “shampoo” dates back to 1762, being introduced to England via colonial India!

By Klaus Ferlow An Anglo-Indian word “shampoo” is derived from Hindi,“champo”, meaning head massage.

Champo in turn is derived from the Sanskrit/Hindi word “champa,” perhaps referring to the flowers of the plant, Michaelia champaca, which has traditionally been used to make fragrant hair oil.

The Indian treatment of champi (shampooing) or head massage was thought to be introduced in England by Bengali Sake Dean Mahomet, who was shampooing surgeon to both King George IV and King William IV.

History of Shampoo

It was only in the 1900s that shampooing referred to washing hair with soap, and in Germany where I come from, we used “Kernseife”, which worked very well.

Sometimes, depending what kind of soap was used, a dull film was left in the hair, making it uncomfortable, irritating, and unhealthy looking. By boiling shaved soap in water and adding herbs, hair could be given shine and fragrance. In India, herbs such as Neem, soap nut, fenugreek, buttermilk and aloe vera, have been used for thousands of years in different shampoo formulas.

The first modern non-soap shampoos were introduced in the 1930s and popped onto the North American market in the mid 1930s. Prior to that time, soap and shampoo, both being surfactants (a type of detergent), were used interchangeable.

People at the time typically shampooed anywhere from once every two to six weeks or longer.

Only with an increase in marketing and advertising between 1930s – 1950s did frequent shampooing become more popular.

People believe that shampoo cleans the hair, however, the scalp is the principal target. Today, shampoo when lathered with water, is used for the removal of styling products, sebum (natural oils), dirt, skin particles, dandruff, psoriasis, environmental pollutants etc. that gradually over time built up in hair and scalp.

It is suggested to use a quality Ayurveda hair & scalp oil before you wash your hair may be once a week and not more otherwise it strips your hair from the natural oil your body develops. A good natural herbal shampoo without any harsh harmful chemical ingredients removes unwanted build-up without stripping out the natural oils (sebum) which lubricate the hair shaft to make the hair unmanageable and does not only a good cleansing the scalp and hair but also minimizing frizz and beautifying hair.

It is well known that chemical cleansers and lathering agents, such as sulphates are hard on hair.

Shampooing is usually followed by applying conditioners to increase of combing and styling.

Try to Avoid Harsh Chemicals

The typical commercial shampoo contains between 10 – 30 questionable harsh chemicals or more!

Most of these chemicals have long names and some of them are even difficult to pronounce. If you are interested to learn more about hazardous, dangerous chemicals in personal care products check information at the reference list.

How to Maintain Healthier Hair and Scalp By shampooing too often you are stripping the hair and scalp of their healthy oils and create a vicious cycle, leading the skin to produce even more oil and your hair becomes very sticky and oily!

By using less product, less often, and taking also less shorter showers with chlorinated water which drys your skin, you will be doing the environment and your wallet a favor.

People with very coarse and curly hair, such as those of African descent, should wash no more than once a week. Rinsing the hair can be either done with herbs such as nettle, baking soda or diluted apple cider vinegar, 10 parts water to one part vinegar, it can add body and shine and it is not recommended using a hair dryer! Brushing your hair from time to time might be useful.

Why Herbal Shampoos?

Today, herbal shampoos are available in a wide variety without any hazardous harsh chemicals such as SLS sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulphate, phosphates, artificial colors and scent, coal tar, nitrosamines, methylisothiazoline (MT), paraben preservatives (butyl,ethyl, methyl, propyl) and other toxic ingredients.

Several common chemicals have been known to cause health problems such as allergic reactions, including synthetic fragrances and parabens. Parabens are not necessary, they are also toxic to the environment and can be contaminated with carcinogens!

No wonder some of the most frequent complaints made to Health Canada and the FDA in the U.S. are about scalp and eye irritation, hair loss and hair damage caused by these dangerous chemicals. Natural health retailers and practitioners should read the ingredients on the labels and avoid recommending these unhealthy products to consumers!

A good herbal shampoo should have the following qualities: easy rinsing good finish after washing the hair minimal or no skin/eye irritation no damage to the hair, and hair loss leaves hair feeling silky soft pleasant smell (only genuine essential oils should be used, not synthetic fragrance oils) no toxicity (good biodegradability) be slightly acid (pH less than 7) minimize breaking the disulphide bonds in hair keratin C

Natural Shampoo, from 9 What About Hair Loss?

I have noticed that a lot of people in North America, in particularly young males, have very little or no hair and if you ask them why their answer:”it is inherited” which I think in most cases is wrong!

When using a shampoo “loaded” with harsh hazardous dangerous chemicals and at the same time eating “junk food” drinking pop drinks, consuming too much alcohol and maybe even smoking...that is a recipe for disaster! Medicinal Teas

Tea is a great way to take herbal medicine as it is so easy to do and easy for the body to assimilate.

There are no capsules or pills for the body to break down – it just goes into the stomach as a liquid.

People can relate to drinking tea – it’s something we’ve been doing for thousands of years.

Some herbs should not be used in medicinal teas because they are too bitter.

The best herbs to use in medicinal tea include: chamomile, ginger, Echinacea, goldenseal, dandelion, peppermint, sage, thyme, oregano, rosemary, turmeric, cinnamon, clove.

Adding honey or stevia as a sweetener is a great way to make it taste better.

To make an immune boosting tea, use a combination of thyme, sage, ginger and Echinacea. A calming tea would require herbs like chamomile and peppermint. A good tea for headaches would require herbs like rosemary, peppermint and chamomile.

A tea for congestion and coughs uses thyme, oregano and peppermint with a bit of clove and sage or goldenseal.

For digestive issues, use the herbs ginger, peppermint, cinnamon and dandelion. Dandelion is effective for the liver.

For inflammation, use turmeric, clove, chamomile and lemongrass. Some herbs can be added to improve the flavor or to taste. There are many variations available, it just depends what one wants to accomplish.

Cooking and Baking with Tea Besides drinking tea, it’s popular nowadays to add tea to foods or other types of beverages. How about a tea smoothie? Or maybe a tea sorbet?

How about rooibos pancakes, sweet rolls or muffins?

Or bake rooibos with butternut squash with a delightfully different dinner entrée.

There is no limit to what you can do with tea.

Think about that next time you brew your favorite cup of tea.

Vegetarian ‘Meatloaf’ 1½ lbs ground veggie round ¾ cup quinoa flakes or quick oatmeal ¾ cup almond milk 1 large egg ½ cup onion, finely diced 1¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp black pepper ⅓ cup salsa 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp mustard Preheat oven to 350 degrees Combine ground veggie round, oatmeal, milk, egg, onion, salt and pepper in a medium sized mixing bowl. Using your hand, incorporate everything into the ground round. This only takes 30 seconds or so, you do not want to over mix.

Transfer mixture into a large loaf pan and press it down evenly into the pan.

Mix salsa and brown sugar in a small bowl. Pour over meatloaf.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 20 minutes Remove from oven and drain off excess grease.

Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Cocoa No-Bake Bars

1 cup creamy peanut butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup coconut oil (or substitute butter) 2 cups old fashioned oats (or substitute Rice Krispies) 1 cup shredded coconut 1/2 cup chopped nuts, raisins, or dried cranberries 1 cup cocoa powder 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Melt the peanut butter, honey, and coconut oil over medium-low heat in a saucepan on the stove. {Watch this closely so it doesn’t burn} Remove from heat once it’s melted together and add in the oats, shredded coconut, chocolate chips, nuts/raisins, and vanilla. Stir together until the chocolate is completely melted.

Pour into a greased 9×13 pan and cool in the fridge.

When it’s hardened, cut into bars and eat.

Overindulged? Make Cleansing Soup

t’s that time of year again – we’ve over-indulged over the holidays and now it seems that our entire wardrobe has shrunk. Or could it be our waistlines have expanded?

Either way, it’s a good idea to cleanse away that extra holiday cheer as we begin our new year – and a great way to do this is to cook up some cleansing soup.

Soup is one of the best meals we can consume when we are trying to drop a few pounds. It’s easy to digest, filling, and chock-a-block full of detoxifying herbs and vegetables with valuable vitamins and minerals. A wonderful way to do a soup cleanse is to cook up a big batch of soup in the morning and consume it throughout the day.

Here is a delicious recipe for a colourful and cleansing soup that can help you get back into those skinny jeans.

Rainbow Cleansing Soup 1/4 cup water 1/2 of a red onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 celery stalks, diced 3 medium carrots, diced 1 small head of broccoli florets 1 cup chopped tomatoes 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger 1 teaspoon grated turmeric* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste (optional) Fine-grain sea salt and black pepper, to taste 6 cups water 2 cups kale, de-stemmed and torn in pieces 1 cup purple cabbage, chopped Juice from 1/2 of a small lemon (or a whole lemon, depending how much lemon flavor you prefer) (Here’s a tip: freeze your ginger and turmeric root – when you need them simply grate the roots for your recipes. And if they are organic, you don’t even need to peel them.)

In a large pot, add the water and turn on the heat to medium-high. After it's hot, add the onion and garlic.

Sauté for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the celery, carrots, broccoli, tomatoes and fresh ginger.

Stir and cook for 3 minutes, adding in extra water as needed (another 1/4 cup). Stir in the turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper plus salt and pepper to taste.

Add in the final 6 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until vegetables are soft. Add in the kale, cabbage and lemon juice during the last 2-3 minutes of simmering. This soup can easily be doubled or tripled.

How Important is Good Water?

Why is it important?

Well or lake water is not monitored, which means it is questionable and can become contaminated overnight.

This month’s article will discuss issues and information about water. As always we make no medical claims and the information provided has come from various sources, including the internet, lectures and workshops.

Boiling water is inconvenient, energy/time consuming, does not kill all bacteria (some bacteria is temperature sensitive and is activated by body fluid temperature) and boiling does not reduce particulates (heavy metals, sediments, toxic chemicals) and organic compounds.

I have been told that the human body is at least 70% water and that amount is replaced within the body every 15 days. Wow! What’s it replaced with?

It is replaced with what we put back into our bodies.

Proper levels of water intake, or hydration, are related to circulation, assimilation, digestion, and temperature control. Hydration improves joint mobility, helps to maintain proper muscle tone, improves skin tone, texture and resilience, suppresses appetite naturally, relieves constipation, increases energy levels, is associated with mental clarity, helps to protect the cells, flushes toxins and other bad stuff from the body and a whole lot more. Many doctors speak about how water will eliminate many physical discomforts.

HOW MUCH WATER DOES YOUR BODY REQUIRE? A more recent measurement of the required daily intake of water is measured in ounces and can be calculated by taking half of your weight in lbs. Then add 1 cup for each hour of strenuous activity. e.g.

128 lbs ÷ 2 = 64 oz = 8 cups.

shwagandha is a perfect herb of the month for January.

That’s because it’s great for reducing stress and helps people strengthen their immune system after an illness.

As many people get sick in the winter months, this herbal adaptogen is an ideal one to use and is frequently referred to as Indian Ginseng due to its rejuvenating properties.

The Sanskrit name, Ashwagandha, means ‘the smell of the horse,’ as the herb provides the vigor and strength of a stallion.

This ancient medicinal herb from India can also reduce blood sugar levels, reduce cortisol levels, reduce symptoms of depression, has anti-cancer properties and can boost testosterone and increase fertility in men.

Ashwagandha does not have any contraindications though large doses may trigger abortion, so pregnant and nursing women should avoid it.

However, because ashwagandha can improve thyroid function and treat adrenal fatigue, it is useful for women to take who are not pregnant.
