Airbus GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric [NYSE: GE], has signed a firm order for 12 highly efficient widebody Airbus A330neos and 20 long-range single-aisle A321XLRs.
The agreement for the A321XLR includes an order for 13 new planes and the upsizing of seven A321s in its existing backlog. The latest order takes the total number of A330 Family aircraft ordered by GECAS to 45 and all variants of the A320 Family to 588. At the Dubai Airshow, Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer said: “Having one of the world’s most respected and influential lessors invest in the A321XLR and the A330neo, speaks volumes on their global appeal, versatility and solid value as an asset. Airbus thanks GECAS on its wise investment and endorsement of the A330neo.” The A330neo Family is the new generation A330, comprising two versions: the A330800 and A330-900 sharing 99 percent commonality. It builds on the proven economics, versatility and reliability of the A330 Family, while reducing fuel consumption by about 25 percent per seat versus previous generation competitors and increasing range by up to 1,500 nm compared to the majority of A330s in operation. The A321XLR is the longest-range single-aisle commercial jetliner ever, capable of flying routes up to 4,700nm with unbeatable fuel efficiency. The enhanced range and efficiency of the A321XLR enables operators to exploit new route opportunities with Pagină 8 din 51
low operating costs, a reduced environmental impact, and provide passengers with a comfortable travel experience. The A330neo is powered by Rolls-Royce’s latest-generation Trent 7000 engines and features a new wing with increased span and new A350 XWB-inspired Sharklets. The cabin provides the comfort of the new Airspace amenities including state-of-the-art passenger inflight entertainment and Wifi connectivity systems.

ecoDemonstrator and Ground-based Midcourse Defense programs recognized for achievements in aerospace Two Boeing [NYSE:BA] programs were honored today with Aviation Week Laureate Awards for extraordinary achievements in aerospace. Boeing's ecoDemonstrator program was recognized in the Commercial Aviation Sustainability category. The ecoDemonstrator takes promising technologies out of the lab and into a flying test bed to solve real-world challenges for airlines, passengers and the environment. These technologies focus on enhancing safety; reducing fuel use, emissions and noise; using more environmentally responsible materials; and improving cabin amenities to make flying more enjoyable for passengers. "We are honored to win the first-ever Laureate Award in the Commercial Aviation Sustainability category," said Kourosh Hadi, director of Airplane Product Development. "Sustainability is the foundational element of the ecoDemonstrator program, and it's exciting to be recognized for our innovative and collaborative leadership on projects that are truly making a difference in our industry." In partnership with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Boeing's Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program was recognized in the Defense Weapons Platforms category. The MDA and Boeing completed a historic missile defense test earlier this year. For the first time, two GMD system interceptors were launched to destroy a threat-representative target, validating the fielded system protects the United States from intercontinental ballistic missiles. This is GMD's third Laureate Award; the program was also recognized in 2015 and 2018. "The data collected from this test will enhance missile defense for years to come and solidify confidence in the system," said Paul Smith, GMD vice president and program director. "We are proud to be recognized for this work that demonstrated, and will continue to increase, the system's reliability to outpace the ever advancing threat." An operation in the Mediterranean Sea, the first of OCEAN2020’s two defence-focused demonstrations, will be led by Leonardo and the Italian Navy • The aim of the exercise will be to evaluate how remotely-piloted aircraft can help respond to the challenges of maritime surveillance, as well as assessing European and NATO-level interoperability • The Leonardo-led OCEAN2020 (Open Cooperation forEuropean mAritime awareNess) team comprises 42 partners from 15 European nations Leonardo stands ready to embark on the first OCEAN2020 demonstration, bringing together six naval units, nine remotely-piloted systems, five satellites, two ground communications networks, four national co-ordination centres (Maritime Operation Centres - MOCs) and a prototype command centre (EU MOC) located in Brussels. The demonstration is the first live exercise being carried out as part of the European Defence Fund’s pan-European military research project known as OCEAN2020, ‘Open Cooperation for European mAritime awareNess’. Leonardo is leading the project, which aims to evaluate how remotely-piloted aircraft can help respond to the challenges of maritime surveillance. The demonstration will take place in the Gulf of Taranto on 20th and 21st of November and will be coordinated at sea by the Italian Navy. As a key partner of OCEAN2020, the Navy has provided ships and helicopters for the project and has helped develop the operational scenarios for the demonstrations. These will include the interdiction of a hostile vessel and the interception of an enemy mine-laying ship during an amphibious operation. NATO So good morning, Deputy Secretary Norquist, Under Secretary Lord, General Lanata, Generals, Admirals, Ladies and gentlemen, your Excellencies,
Welcome to all of you, it’s great to see you all and it’s great to be back in Washington and to meet people who are so important for our Alliance. Last time I was in Washington was in April to celebrate the 70th anniversary of our Alliance and this time it’s great to be back and meet with all of you. And also meet with the representatives of the industry which is so important for our Alliance. Over the last seven decades, NATO Allies have stood together, defended each other and created the conditions for unprecedented prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic. We have done this by investing in the capabilities needed to ensure an effective deterrence and defence. Our security – our freedom – depends on having the sharpest minds, the best equipment and the latest technology. And much of that comes from you, the men and women of the defence industry. Our cooperation with industry has been at the forefront of NATO’s adaptation through the decades. Without the private sector, without the industry, NATO would not have become the strongest military alliance in the world. So the first thing I want to say… is thank you. The defence industry is important for NATO. But NATO is also important for the defence industry. NATO Allies are your largest customers, the bulk of your market. Procurement decisions are mostly made by national governments. But NATO plays a decisive role in three particular ways. First, NATO sets guidelines for how much Allies spend on defence. Second, NATO determines on what much of this money is spent. And third, NATO often facilitates how this money is spent. So first, how much. After the end of the Cold War Allies reduced defence spending. But in the last few years the trend is reversed. All Allies have stopped the cuts. All Allies have increased Pagină 19 din 51
defence spending. More Allies are meeting the guideline of spending 2% of GDP on defence. And the majority of Allies now have plans to do so by 2024. This is a major achievement. Defence spending has now increased across European Allies and Canada for five consecutive years. By the end of next year, these Allies will have added an additional one hundred billion dollars to their defence budgets. That’s billions of dollars for new equipment. New investment in the latest technologies. And new research and development to make sure we remain at the cutting edge. This in return means new opportunities for our defence industries. Europe is already the United States’ second largest export market for defence. And it’s growing. So we have established an upward trend. But we must keep up the momentum. Which brings me to my second point. NATO helps to determine how those extra billions of dollars will be spent. We are not only committed to spend more. But also about spending better. Allies agreed to invest at least 20% of their budgets in research and development, and new equipment. More than half are already meeting this commitment. And more Allies are doing so every year. This is a powerful driver for the Alliance to continue to invest in new equipment and new technologies. And it is essential to do so. Through the NATO Defence Planning Process, Allies agree on which capabilities to invest in. This enables different Allies to provide the required forces and capabilities in the most effective and efficient way. Including new, disruptive technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Autonomous Systems. These present incredible opportunities for our security. But these technologies also pose risks to our ability to work together, to our interoperability. That is why NATO requires common standards across the Alliance. And that is why we hold regular exercises to test our ability to work together. In last year’s Trident Juncture in Norway, we successfully tested new technologies in the field, such as micro-drones and 3D printing. Earlier this month, NATO conducted our largest maritime electronic warfare exercise. Testing how allied navies can defend themselves against anti-ship, cruise and hypersonic missiles using state-of-the-art electronic defences. And another recent NATO exercise tested new ways of generating and distributing energy in military operations. Helping our military to become more selfefficient, more effective, and to reduce our impact on the environment. More than ever before we see that the latest and most advanced technologies come from countries that are outside of the NATO Alliance. Notably, from China. China is now the world’s second largest economy and the second largest spender on defence. It is modernizing its military. We all saw the advanced intercontinental nuclear missiles it paraded through the streets of Beijing recently. As well as new supersonic cruise missile, an assortment of new drones, anti-ship missiles and hypersonic gliders. But China is also becoming a global leader in the development of other disruptive technologies. From facial recognition to quantum computing. And it is able to gather vast amounts of data not only from China, but from around the world, including from NATO Allied countries. Technology is changing warfare, but also our societies. Recent developments in 5G technology are a pertinent example. The ‘Internet-of-Things’, connecting the physical world to the internet, depends on 5G. This will impact every aspect of our societies. Transportation, energy, food, health, manufacturing. It provides enormous opportunities. But it can also make us more vulnerable. That is why ensuring the security of our 5G infrastructure is so crucial. Last month, at the NATO Defence Ministerial meeting, we agreed to update our baseline requirements for civilian telecommunications, including 5G. This is not about a specific country or a specific company. But it does mean that all Allies will have to Pagină 20 din 51
take into account the need for thorough risk and vulnerability assessments. Identifying and countering cyber threats. And the consequences of foreign ownership, control or direct investment. To increase the resilience of our supply chains. And the resilience of our nations and our Alliance. The third reason why NATO is important for the defence industry is by facilitating how defence budgets are spent. Our world is changing. All of us need to work harder and faster to make sure we exploit new technologies. And deliver programmes on time and on budget. NATO brings Allies together to invest in joint projects. Some projects are funded by all 29 Allies working together. Since 2016, NATO has funded investments worth over 5 billion dollars. Everything from facilities for prepositioned equipment to satellite time for more secure communications are funded over NATO common funded budgets. NATO funds research projects in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and cryptology. And Allied Command Transformation, our home here in the United States and the coorganiser of this event today, works with companies to improve decision-making for defence planning. But there are also collaborative projects by smaller groups of Allies. Not all the 29, but the smaller groups. Combining their resources to maximize their investment potential. The fleet of NATO AWACS aircraft has been our eyes in the sky, supporting our airborne operations for decades. From patrolling American skies after 9/11 to our operations in Afghanistan and as part of the Global Coalition against ISIS. We are planning for its replacement in 2035. Which will include many of the technologies we are talking about today, such as autonomous systems, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data. Other examples of how Allies invest together include Alliance Ground Surveillance, where 15 Allies have bought 5 Global Hawk drones. Which will soon be flying from their base in Sigonella, Italy. And Strategic Airlift Capability, where 12 countries have pooled their resources to share access to C-17 flights. None of those nations could afford this on their own. At practically every Defence Ministers’ meeting more Allies are signing up to work together on new multinational programmes. Only this year Ministers signed joint agreements: to purchase a fleet of aircraft for air-to-air refueling, the first of which will come into service in May. To purchase and store precision guided munition ready for combat. And to develop unmanned maritime systems that will be able to do everything from mine clearance to tracking submarines. So that’s actually one of the great things that happens at all the Defence Ministerials meetings, is that we bring together Allies and they sign agreements on how to develop different projects together and that helps to make us all stronger and it makes NATO an important platform for making Allies able to join forces, also when it comes to development of new capabilities. Some of these projects also involve the European Union. I welcome the European efforts on defence. They have the potential to increase defence spending, provide new capabilities and improve burden-sharing within the Alliance. But NATO and the EU need to complement each other. Nations shouldn’t have two sets of capability requirements. Forces and capabilities developed under PESCO, the EU’s mechanism to increase military cooperation among member states, must also be available for NATO. And we need the fullest possible involvement of non-EU NATO Allies. This will be even more important after Brexit. When 80% of NATO defence spending will come from non-EU Allies. NATO remains vital for delivering transatlantic security. So ladies and gentlemen, This year we have been celebrating the 70th anniversary of NATO. NATO is the strongest and most successful Alliance in history. Not least because of the close Pagină 21 din 51
relationship we have with industry. Much of our success is based on having a technological edge over our potential adversaries. And it is you who have enabled us to maintain that edge. A thriving defence industry is more important than ever. To nurture innovation. And to help manufacture the capabilities NATO needs. This is essential if we are to maintain a strong deterrence and defence. To protect our nations and our citizens. And preserve our prosperity. The relationship between NATO, Allies and industry has grown and developed over the Alliance’s 70 years. And it will continue to grow in the decades to come. The EU aims to develop a home-grown European defence equipment market, and has created a new defence industry and space portfolio in the Commission to facilitate this. But the EU’s ambitions face stiff headwinds in an area dominated by national interests, the US and NATO. For decades, member-states have resisted the European Union’s involvement in the development, production and procurement of military goods and services. National defence industries were considered matters of a country’s vital national interest and therefore immune to the union’s regulatory reach. But in the last three years, several things have challenged this approach and led to calls for the EU to play a greater role: Europe’s neighbourhood has come under threat; the US commitment to guaranteeing Europe’s security has been called into question; and the UK has voted to leave the EU. As a result, the EU has agreed a range of new defence initiatives. The European Commission now proposes to allocate a total of €13 billion to defence research and development in the EU’s 2021-2027 budget cycle – a 22-fold increase over the previous budget. The new European Commission has also established its first ever Directorate-General for the defence industry and space, a bold statement that it intends to develop a homegrown pan-European defence equipment market. Once the new College of Commissioners takes office, the new DG will be subordinate to the French European Commissioner, Thierry Breton, a former economy, finance and industry minister, who will be in charge of an immense portfolio covering the internal market, defence, and digital issues. The new DG is the culmination of several years of high-profile announcements about how the EU would step up its game as a defence actor. Virgil Popescu, Ministrul Economiei, Energiei și Mediului de Afaceri sa întâlnit astăzi cu sindicatele din industria de apărare pentru a purta o serie de discuții în vederea elaborării unor strategii de acțiune în viitorul apropiat. Dialogul s-a purtat după ce Premierul Ludovic Orban, Ministrul Economiei Virgil Popescu și Ministrul Apărării Naționale Nicolae Ciucă au avut o întâlnire în vederea consolidării cooperării între cele două instituții. ”Am răspuns cererii de a ne întâlni în acest format și de a discuta cu dumneavoastră. Ministerul pe care îl conduc are printre direcțiile strategice și industria de apărare. Referitor la aceasta, eu am avut încă de la începutul mandatului întâlniri cu Ministrul Apărării Naționale Nicolae Ciucă și am hotărât să elaborăm un plan multianual de colaborare cu Armata Română, în urma căruia vom vedea cum poate să răspundă industria de apărare nevoilor Armatei Române. Trebuie să știți că vă bazați atât pe sprijinul meu, cât și pe sprijinul domnului Nicolae Ciucă, Ministrul Apărării Naționale. Pagină 27 din 51
Amândoi vrem să stabilim o bună colaborare între ministerele pe care le conducem”, a afirmat Virgil Popescu, Ministrul Economiei, Energiei și Mediului de Afaceri. Printre cei ce au participat la întâlnirea de la sediul Ministerului Economiei se numără domnul Constantin Bucuroiu, preşedintele Sindicatului Dreptatea de la Uzina Automecanică Moreni şi secretar naţional pe probleme de industrie de apărare în cadrul Federaţiei Naţionale Sindicale Solidaritatea Metal, domnul Ion Ivan, liderul Federației Sindicatelor din Apărare UNIREA, precum și președinți ai sindicatelor de la Uzina Mecanică SADU, Uzina Mecanică Orăștie, IAR Ghimbav, Fabrica de Pulberi SA Făgăraș, IOR SA. Aceștia au vorbit despre problemele cu care se confruntă cele mai multe societăți din industria de apărare: lipsa contractelor și a investițiilor, criza forței de muncă din cauza nivelului foarte mic de salarizare. Ministrul Economiei Virgil Popescu i-a asigurat pe cei prezenți că în mandatul său își propune să întărească relația de colaborare dintre MAPN și Ministerul Economiei, subliniind faptul că-și dorește să sprijine puternic industria națională de apărare. Totodată, Virgil Popescu a arătat că este la curent cu situația dificilă în care se află multe dintre companiile din portofoliul ministerului, situație generată și de precedentul mod de lucru defectuos dintre Ministerul Economiei și Ministerul Apărării Naționale. În acest context, Ministrul Economiei le-a spus liderilor de sindicat că a discutat cu Ministrul Apărării și împreună au stabilit că este necesară elaborarea unui plan multianual de colaborare cu Armata Română, pentru a avea o planificare strategică a comenzilor ce se vor face companiilor din industria de apărare. La finalul întâlnirii, Ministrul Economiei a reiterat că industria de apărare este prioritară și că este receptiv la problemele întâmpinate de societăți și angajații acestora, dar a subliniat că își dorește ca toți cei implicați să dea dovadă de profesionalism.

Gala celei de-a treia ediții a concursului de inovare pentru securitate națională, PatriotFest, s-a desfășurat marți, 19 noiembrie, la Palatul Cercului Militar Național, în prezența ministrului apărării naționale, Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă. În cadrul ceremoniei au fost premiate cele mai bune proiecte ale ediției 2019, premiul PatriotFest fiind acordat echipei formate din • Rebeca Tudor, • Cristian Kusko, • Mihai Kusko • Avram Andrei pentru „masca de fază spirală pentru comunicații optice și cuantice” (înregistrarea de informații securizate într-un anumit tip de transmisie a luminii). Celelalte premii ale categoriilor de concurs – • Agilitatea cunoașterii, • Optimizarea performanței umane, • Siguranța pericolului • Creativitate pentru securitate - au fost acordate unor echipe care au dezvoltat prototipuri funcționale în domenii diverse, precum • ascunderea textului în imagine sau în sunet, • soluții de securizare a documentelor clasificate sau a imaginilor împotriva falsificărilor, • transcrierea materialelor audio în limba română, • prognoze de înaltă acuratețe cu privire la consumul de energie • dezvoltarea unor soluții pentru contaminările biologice. Două premii din categoria „Tânăra Speranță” au fost înmânate echipelor care au intrat în concurs cu utilizarea analizei fractale în modelarea avansată a sistemelor teritoriale și cu un algoritm pentru dezvoltarea de produse mecatronice. Gala PatriotFest este organizată de New Strategy Center în parteneriat cu reprezentanții instituțiilor din Sistemul national de aparare, ordine publică si siguranță națională. Innovation and sustainability will be key themes at Expo 2020 Dubai. Their implementation in the aerospace industry will be at the core of Leonardo’s sponsorship of the Italian Pavilion during the six months of the Universal Exhibition, allowing visitors to gain their knowledge and fostering collaborative business relationships to boost the nation’s competitiveness in the region and on the global stage. On Tuesday, Italy’s General Commissioner at Expo 2020 Dubai Paolo Glisenti and Leonardo Chief Executive Officer Alessandro Profumo presented the company’s sponsorship of the Pavilion at a news conference held on the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow 2019. “I am glad Leonardo decided to partner with Italy at Expo 2020 Dubai since the fallouts of the Aerospace and Space Economy, in which Leonardo has a leading role and an outstanding international competitive position, are at the core of our project focused on sustainability, wellness and safety for all,” said Commissioner General Glisenti. “Italy’s core theme ‘Beauty connects People’ stands to indicate what innovative technologies linked to creative skills can do to generate a better future by linking space discoveries to earth and sea observation, secure and fast mobility to crisis management and sustainable development.” “We are proud to participate in the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2020 Dubai and to contribute to the enhancement of the excellence of our Country which is itself a unique mix of creativity and technology,” said Leonardo’s CEO Profumo. “The attitude toward the transversality of knowledge is an element that has always characterized us and that ideally links us to Leonardo da Vinci, the versatile mind of the Renaissance who has inspired us with the choice of our name." “In the Italian Pavilion we will bring some of the most important technological innovations of our Company, with the aim of showing our significant contribution to the progress and development of the communities with which we operate,” Profumo also said. The innovations that Leonardo will bring to the Italian Pavilion include technologies and products related to new frontiers in the aeronautical sector -- from its innovative aircrafts, manned and unmanned, to the integrated aeronautical systems, with a particular focus on the revolutionary AW609 tiltrotor designed and manufactured by Leonardo. Leonardo’s participation will also reflect the Company’s expertise in space exploration as well as in land and water surveillance systems. Among these, the atomic clock which beats time through the resonance frequency of an atom. That is in addition to the drill of the ExoMars2020 mission which will look for signs of life on the Red Planet. Leonardo also aims to broaden and enhance the audience experience of the number of youths visiting the Universal Exhibition for educational purposes. • The upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai will be the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region since their inception in 1851. The Italian Pavilion will be located between the “Opportunity” and “Sustainability” thematic areas within the Expo 2020 site. Moreover, it will be situated near the pavilions of United Arab Emirates, India, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the United States. According to the project estimates, over 28 thousand people will visit the Italy Pavilion daily and more than 5 million over the event’s six-month period starting on October 20, 2020. • The Pavilion will use architecture for a creative presentation of its “beauty connects people” claim. The project sees the involvement of Carlo Ratti, Italo Rota, Matteo Gatto and F&M Ingegneria.
