Leonardo The M-346FA (Fighter Attack) is an evolution of the Aermacchi M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT), and retains its advanced trainer and pre-operational features.

The FA version leverages the long experience built up in developing fighter aircraft.

It has been designed and produced by Leonardo's Aircraft Division with the aim of satisfying the growing and diversified operational requirements of the air forces and offers a tactical solution for the modern battle field with an extremely low costeffectiveness ratio. Letâ€&#x;s discover why.

The present scenario In the present operational scenarios, especially in those with a low-medium threat level, often modern and expensive 20/30 tonne class fighter aircraft are used for missions with high operating costs.

Generally, these are Close Air Support (CAS) missions that have to be carried out in urban areas and for battlefield air interdiction, as well as for Homeland Security and Air Policing, tactical reconnaissance and support for the personnel recovery operations in combat areas, where the use of low-cost aircraft equipped with radar, a state-of-the-art designator pod, modern and technologically advanced self-protection systems, a state-of-the-art data link and a critical air-to-air refuelling capability would be enough.

An effective tactical solution The M-346FA, the low-cost multirole master, was developed from the M-346's AJT advanced training version already in service with the Italian, Israeli, Polish and Singapore Air Forces. In comparison with the latter, the FA version's unique features consist of the upgraded avionics and the two additional wing tip hardpoints (seven in total) in order to have two air-to-air missiles, maintaining at the same time the full dual role capability and the entire extremely advanced Integrated Training System.

The M-346FA will be equipped with a DASS (Defensive Aid Sub System) selfdefence system, which includes a Radar Warning Receiver, a Chaff and Flare dispenser as well as a Missile Approach Warning System, with six sensors and a comprehensive 360° protection against any missile threat. The aircraft will be safely Page 6 of 37

able to exchange in real time all the tactical data thanks to a dedicated Tactical Data Link according to the NATO Link 16 or other standards.

The GRIFO-346, has been installed on board as well. It's a 4th generation, X-band, coherent pulse doppler fire control radar with multimode and multirole capabilities, produced by Leonardo's Airborne & Space Systems Division. The GRIFO-346 is a new variant in the GRIFO Radar family and will provide advanced performances and new capabilities to the M-346FA. Over 450 GRIFO radars in various configurations have been sold worldwide and are presently in service with six different Air Forces on seven different platforms and have logged more than 150,000 flight hours.

The M-346FA‟s cost per flying hour is 80% lower compared to a heavier and more expensive fighter used for close air support missions.

As told by our test pilot In order to better understand the M-346's intrinsic peculiarities that make it suitable to be an excellent efficient and effective multirole aircraft, we spoke to Giacomo Iannelli, Project Test Pilot Trainer of Leonardo's Aircraft Division: “First of all, the low altitude speed is very high even with external loads, while other supersonic aircraft have a better performance in a clean configuration, but get considerably worse when loads are added.

The manoeuvrability is excellent thanks also to the 4-channel digital fly-by-wire flight control system and this allows fast manoeuvring during close air combat. The remarkable specific excess power allows the return to baseeven with full payload, with one engine inoperative (OEI), at an adequate altitude to keep out of the more common range missile threat, guaranteeing a notable survivability capability. The socalled Carefree Handling makes sure that the pilots can focus on the mission, without having to worry about risking to exit the expected flight envelope.

The twin-engine configuration assures a high battlefield survivability and, at the same time, the fuel consumption is kept low thanks to the engine's efficiency, definitely providing a good range, that can be further extended by air refuelling, a capability which is already operational within Italian Air Force. The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) assures completely autonomous flight operations.

Furthermore, the visibility is excellent as the M-346 was born as a trainer, it is a twoseater aircraft and this is very important during low altitude flight. The back-seater pilot can also be act as a Weapons System Operator or a more specialised FAC-A (Forward Air Controller – Airborne) role”.

The wide cockpit of the M-346 with multifunction displays and the Head-Up Display that provides data to pilots are well visible The state-of-the-art Human-Machine Interface includes advanced systems to provide the data to the pilots (Multi-Function Display - MFD, Head Up Display and the Helmet Mounted Display - HMD which is already qualified) and HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick) type commands, this means being able to control all the aircraft's systems without having to take the hands off of the thrust lever or the control bar.

“The M-346FA,” Iannelli continues, “keeps all the advanced trainer's features, such as the on board Embedded Tactical Training System (ETTS) that simulates, in a Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) environment, all the systems and stores with which it will have to operate. This is a significant advantage for the pilots that are thus able to seamlessly pass from training to real missions without having to change the aircraft.”

The FA's new operational capabilities add on to those that the M-346 is already able to offer now, as a “Aggressor” and “Companion Trainer” for Combat Ready pilot training, as the Italian and Israeli Air Forces have been able to successfully demonstrate. The latter is very satisfied with the extremely high training quality and has the largest fleet with 30 “Lavis”, which means young lions, as the M-346s are called in Israel.

Mission types The external stores that can be carried amounts to over 2 tons in addition to the 138 gallons in each auxiliary fuel tank. For the strike missions a series of 500 lb class munitions, both guided and unguided will be integrated, including the latest generation precision munitions capable of keeping the collateral damage to a minimum and to increase the number of targets that can be simultaneously hit. The most modern state-of-the-art Laser Designator Pods are available for target designation.

In regards to Homeland Security and Air Policing missions, including the identification of potential threats (even of a terrorist nature) while flying at low altitude (Slow Movers Intercept), such as for example small aircraft or ultralight helicopters, the M346FA can be equipped with short range infrared guided air-to-air missiles, and medium range active guided missiles and medium range active guided missiles, as well as with a centreline pod that houses a cannon or, upon customer request, an ECM electronic warfare jamming pod.

Suitably configured with a mix of air-to-surface and air-to-air stores, the M-346FA can carry out, without any problem, support missions for complex Personnel Recovery/Combat Search And Rescue operations, namely recovery of personnel even on hostile ground and search and rescue of flight crews shot down in enemy territory.

Finally, in case of reconnaissance missions, the aircraft has been equipped with a dedicated pod that has been effectively used by various Air Forces (including the Italian Air Force) for tactical reconnaissance missions in complex operational theatres in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as for prompt and effective support to the civil protection in the event of natural disasters, such as the earthquake that hit the centre of Italy in August 2016.

(Photo credit: Michelle Jeffries, Lockheed Martin) The U.S. Navy awarded Lockheed Martin a seven-year contract worth up to more than $500 million to build and deliver more than 200 electronic Consolidated Automated Support Systems (eCASS) to maximize aircraft readiness. The previous Navy CASS contract awarded in 2000 to Lockheed Martin was worth $287 million.

According to Navy Naval Air Systems Command, eCASS saves the Navy money by averting the repair of avionics at the next level of maintenance or sending the parts back to the original equipment manufacturer. Sailors use eCASS to troubleshoot and repair aircraft electronics ashore and at sea, allowing them to return aircraft such as the F/A-18 and E-2D to operational status quickly and efficiently.

"Lockheed Martin's partnership with the Navy on Automated Test Equipment began more than 30 years ago with the production and sustainment of the legacy CASS family of products," said Amy Gowder, general manager and vice president, Lockheed Martin Training and Logistics Solutions. "Our technology is always evolving and now can support F-35 advanced avionics and other fifth-generation platforms."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has directed his ministers to examine a full ban on handgun and „assault weapons‟. The move comes in the wake of the recent Danforth shooting which saw 3 killed and 13 more injured. Trudeau has issued a mandate letter to Bill Blair, the minister for Border Security and Organised Crime Reduction Minister to work with colleagues to examine banning handguns.

Saab Australia has selected Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia to provide the electro optic sensor as part of the situational awareness system for the 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) SEA1180 Project. This Electro Optic Sensor is the Vigy Engage system in its latest version.

Developed and produced by Safran Electronics & Defense, Vigy Engage is a light, panoramic, multi-sensor shipboard electro optic system. It includes a cooled infrared imager, video channels and a laser rangefinder. Employing advanced stabilization techniques, it provides clear images day or night, including in rough seas and at high speed.

Vigy Engage is recognized worldwide for its robustness, high-quality images, ease of use, compact design, light weight and easy integration. More than 300 Vigy Engage systems have been sold worldwide.

Capable of detecting long range targets, Vigy Engage will provide a decisive advantage to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in the asymmetrical environments: protection of ports and infrastructures, maritime police, anti-terrorist and anti-piracy combat. It also provides invaluable assistance in missions designed to protect fishing and economic zones, navigation aid, and assistance to ships and crews at sea.

This new success will enable Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia to continue to reinforce its footprint in Australia and to continue building its team through local employment. "Safran Electronics & Defense Australasia (SEDA) is proud to sign this contract with Saab Australia. General Dynamics Land Systems–Australia is actively engaging with Australian industry to develop an innovative and sustainable on-shore supply chain to maximize the amount of work undertaken in Australia for LAND 400 Phase 3. This is a model that has worked successfully in the UK, where the AJAX program currently supports 4,100 direct UK jobs across more than 230 UK-based companies, alongside the establishment of a new General Dynamics Land Systems AFV production facility in the UK. The discussions today made clear the progress that is being made and the SEDE subcommittee will cooperate with the EDA on this topic. Our main concern over the next months will be the European Defence Fund, a primary component of this new architecture, and the discussions today will certainly inform the committee's work."

The session started with a strategic discussion on the wider cooperation framework for defence cooperation and the need to ensure coherence between the new initiatives (CARD, PESCO, EDF) in line with the capability development priorities agreed by Member States. “The overall objective of all of these initiatives must be to produce defence capabilities that are currently lacking and that we truly need, at a European level. Not capabilities needed by one or the other Member State, but capabilities that are needed by Europe as a whole to perform the taskings deriving from its Global Strategy”, Mr Domecq underlined.

MEPs were also updated on the revised Capability Development Plan (CDP) and the 11 capability development priorities which were approved by Member States last June. The various presentations were followed by a lively and interesting exchange of views on a wide variety of topics, including EU-NATO cooperation.

Commissioner Bieńkowska in Poland to discuss the future of EU defence policy EUROPA Tomorrow, Commissioner for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs Elżbieta Bieńkowska will be in Kielce (Poland) to visit the 26th edition of the International Defence Industry Exhibition, which annually welcomes hundreds of firms from the defence sector. The Commissioner will engage with the visitors in a Citizens' Dialogue on the future of EU defence policy, where she will deliver a speech with a specific focus on the European Defence Fund. In July the Commission tabled proposals to increase the EU's strategic autonomy, bolster its ability to protect European citizens and make the EU a stronger global actor.
