County to Provide Land for New Aquatic Center

The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Henry County Development Authority, which will sublease a parcel of land to the Kensley Grace Aquatic Foundation, Inc.to build an aquatic center in Henry County.

The action came at the May 5, 2015 Commission meeting.

The County will lease the property for 50 years to the Development Authority, which will in turn sublease to the

Foundation for a 30-year term and at the end of the lease, ownership of the facility will go to the county, however, except for the lease of the land, no taxpayer money will be spend on the aquatic center.

The property consists of a 20.3acre parcel of land located on Henry Parkway in McDonough, across from the Mercer University Henry County Campus.

Construction is expected to begin in approximately three years.

May 8, 2015 Board of Commissioners Recognizes Older Americans Month

The Henry County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the month of May as Older Americans Month and presented the proclamation, which was accepted by the Henry County Senior Services Department.

The Henry County Board of Commissioners recognized the importance of the contributions of senior citizens by issuing a proclamation designating May as Older Americans Month, with the theme Get Into the Act, which highlights the importance of older adults taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities and making a positive impact in the lives of others.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA) and since 1965, the Older Americans Act has provided services that help older adults remain healthy and independent, by complementing existing medical and health care systems programs, as well as supporting family

caregivers and addressing issues of exploitation, neglect and abuse of older adults.

The proclamation read in part, “We recognize the value of community engagement and services in helping older adults remain healthy and active while giving back to others, and‌ Our community can provide opportunities to enrich the lives of individuals of all ages by promoting and engaging in activity, wellness and social inclusion, emphasizing home and community-based services that support independent living and ensuring community members of all ages benefit from the contributions and experience of older adults.â€?

PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE A Budget hearing will be held Wednesday, May 13th at 9:00 a.m. in the Community Room at the Henry County Administration Building located at 140 Henry Parkway in McDonough.

May 8, 2015 Commissioner Holmes Earns GEMA Appointment

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency has appointed Henry County District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes as a County Commissioner representative on the Area 7 All Hazards Council. Holmes was recommended for the post by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) and will join top personnel representing the various disciplines of emergency services, including police, sheriffs, fire, 911, public health and other elected officials, to address critical issues of the region.

As a member of the council, Holmes will assist in developing response and recovery strategies for potential hazards, as well as to help identify critical regional infrastructure, prepare response plans, support regional exercises and advise on potential projects for grant funding.

“It’s an honor to be selected by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency and I look forward to giving them my full commitment in helping to ensure the safety and security of all citizens,” said Holmes.

“I’m also pleased that Henry County will have a voice at the state level on such important matters.”

Henry County Parks and Recreation Offers Summer Camp The end of another school year will be here before we know it and what better way to keep your children busy, safe and happy all summer long than by participating in Henry County Parks and Recreation’s Summer Day Camp?

The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering a Summer Day Camp in what promises to a be fun-filled, summer experience. There will be a swim day during each week of camp and field trips include Starlight Skating Rink, the World of Coke, the College Football Hall of Fame, Medieval Times, Sky Zone and a Braves baseball game.

Camps begin June 1 and continue until July 31.

Summer camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each weekday and is for children ages 5 to 13. There will be no camp the week of June 29 to July 3. Camps will be held at Heritage Park in McDonough, the Locust Grove Recreation Center in Locust Grove, J. P. Moseley Recreation Center in Stockbridge and the Fairview Recreation Center in Stockbridge.

These camps are one of the most affordable camps in the metro area. Each week of camp costs just $100 and $90 for each additional family member and the fee includes all of the field trips and activities.

Families may register for any or all weeks of camp, but space is limited.

Registration is open and is being held Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heritage Park or any of the recreation centers mentioned above.

May 8, 2015 Commission Approves Several SPLOST Projects To Move Forward

The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved several resolutions pertaining to SPLOST projects, at the May 5, 2015 regular Commission meeting.

Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Henry County Water Authority for the design and construction of two sewer service projects budgeted under SPLOST IV. The two projects are sewer lines to Fairview Rd. in Ellenwood and to the Henry County Airport in Hampton. Under the agreement, the Henry County Water Authority has agreed to engineer, survey, acquire the necessary easements and property rights and construct the projects, which will cost a total of $4,000,000 and is budgeted under SPLOST IV in the calendar year 2015 budget.

Commissioners also approved a bid award for construction to Baldwin Paving Company in the amount of $1,473,856.66 for intersection improvements to East Lake Road and S.R. 20. The intersection improvements

consist of the construction of a roundabout to replace what is currently a four-way stop. Improvements were necessary in light of several serious accidents at the intersection in recent years.

Additionally, the Board approved the purchase and installation of digital surveillance camera equipment to be used at the Moseley Park Recreation Center in Stockbridge. The same digital cameras are currently being used with great success at other Henry County facilities and the software required to run the system was already purchased when the Transit Department upgraded its surveillance system and can be expanded to handle any Henry County Department that adds to or upgrades its surveillance equipment.

The cost to purchase and install the equipment at Moseley Recreation Center is $20,929 and is available in SPLOST II funds.
