She successfully practiced as an advocate at the high court chambers as a member of the Pretoria Society of Advocates. The saying ‘once a cop always a cop’ was proved right when lt genl Khan again returned to the police service as the divisional commissioner: legal and policy services.

BLOUGAT AT CR SWART SQUARE

Sonja van Tonder

I was still a blougat and worked at the cells at CR Swart Square where a big fat woman was held before she was transferred to a mental institution. She spent her days naked and filling her cup with water and throwing the water out on the floor in her courtyard.

I was instructed to give her food by going through the first cell door and passing it through the hatch of the cell door to her courtyard (nobody realized that that door had not been locked). As I passed her food through the hatch, she pushed the door open grabbed me, threw me to the floor and jumped on (remember she was naked and the floor was soaking wet) and started bouncing on me with her legs straddled each side of me singing "horsey, horsey". You don't want to imagine what sight was staring in my face at that stage! Needless to say when my colleagues heard me shouting and came running to the scene, they first stood there laughing for at least 30 seconds before helping me. It is a moment in my life I would love to forget but can never forget!
