Fall Is Tree Planting Time
Now is the best time to plant new and replacement trees. For peak post-planting performance, container-grown trees are the best option. Well-developed root structures and minimal planting shock, combined with locally grown native species, are key factors. Those best-choice trees are available from the annual Soil & Water Conservation District fall tree sale. Orders are accepted through Sept. 23; all trees and understory shrubs are $25 each. Choose from 24 species grown in three-gallon containers, ranging from American Plum to Scarlet Oak, to Elderberry. A completed order form and full payment are to be sent to the Hendricks County SWCD, 195 Meadow Dr., Ste. 2, Danville, IN 46122. Make checks payable to Hendricks County SWCD. Proceeds help fund local district programs including clean water and soil conservation efforts. Call the district office with questions, (317) 7452555, ext. 3. If Danville issued its own historical markers, there would likely be one in the parking lot behind the building housing the offices of Kendall, Wood, Lowry & Kessinger, on the southeast corner of Washington and Main. It would read: “On this site, October 4, 1958, Boy Scouts of America Troop 301 had their first annual Hickory Smoked Ham Bar-B-Q.” Boy Scout Troop 301 will be hosting its 63rd annual Ham Stand on Labor Day Weekend in the parking lot of The Mower Zone, 1120 W Main Street, Danville. The Ham Stand provides whole, sliced and chopped hams that have been cooked on outdoor wood cookers by scouts, using a special sauce that is also prepared by the troop. In addition, scouting families provide homemade desserts that include apple pies, chocolate cake, and persimmon cookies. Scouts work several shifts in jobs that range from cooking and cleaning to serving guests food. “It’s a great opportunity for our scouts to get hands-on experience doing restaurant-type work,” said Andy Hardin, Scout Master. “Since restaurants are often kids’ first jobs, this is The line forms on Thursday, September 2, when Boy a great place try it out.” Scout Troop 301 opens for business under the tent in the The Ham Stand is Mower Zone parking lot.
