We offer this guide to help voters make their votes count.

Above: In 1976, voting machines were the size of a walk-in closet.

The large lever was used to close the curtain in front of the machine.

Votes were made by switching small levers by the candidate’s name.

Pulling the large lever a second time registered the votes and opened the curtains.

This year marks the 100th annivesary of voting by machine in Hendricks County. In June of 1921, the county commissioenrs appropriated $22,585 for the purchase of 20 machines. The company gave bond to keep them in good operating shape for 10 years.

In February 2022, the 20 machines arrived at the court house rotunda, weighing an estimataed 900 pounds each.

The Republican reported, “It is the plan to place these

machines in the various precincts so people can become acquainted with using them, as they will have their ‘workout’ at the May primary.” ______________________________________________

When you entrusted me with the honor of serving you five years ago, I swore an oath to defend the Constitution.

I also pledged to you that I would work on behalf of all Hoosiers to deliver conservative results.

I believe I have done so.

INDIANA STATE CANDIDATES KENT ABERNATHY - R STATE REPRESENTATIVE - DISTRICT 25 Kent Abernathy is a husband, father, grandfather, businessman, veteran, native Hoosier, and devoted Republican. Kent has dedicated his life to service, and has been honored to serve.

He’s a West Point graduate who earned a Bronze Star for his service in Iraq.

During a successful business career, he gained a deep knowledge of the factors which spur economic growth and create jobs. Working on behalf of Hoosiers in key appointments for Governor Daniels and as an agency head for Governor Pence, he learned the importance of effective, efficient government. She and her husband moved to Indiana, 16 years ago in order to have a safe, conservative area to raise their children. They wanted a place where they could raise their children with the faith and values they believed were important and where they could meet the individual educational needs of each of their children. Four of their six children have special and medical needs and this ignited her passion for fighting for those that did not have a voice.

Becky is passionate about medical freedom, making sure that every child receives a strong education, parental rights in all areas, fighting for our constitutional rights, tackling our mental health crisis and making sure that the people of District 25 are heard and fought for at the Indiana State House.

Becky is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and Trinity School with a Certification from Steubenville University. She and her family attend and are active at St Alphonsus Liguori Parish in Zionsville. Becky Cash is also active in many organizations and works as a naturopathic practitioner in Indianapolis. ______________________________________________ MATHEW D. WHETSTONE - R STATE REPRESENTATIVE - DISTRICT 25 Conservative businessman and local community leader, Matt Whetstone, formally announced his campaign for Indiana House District 25. Whetstone is a Republican vying for an open seat in the Indiana House of Representatives.

Matt is an outspoken conservative who will work to promote an agenda focused on life and liberty. Whetstone stated, “It’s time to get back to basics. Leadership in Indiana should be making decisions that maximize the freedom of the individual and shrinks the size and scope of government.”

Whetstone is a lifelong Hoosier and graduate from Ball State University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. Matt has committed his professional life to business development and job creation. Matt also served his community as a Hendricks County Commissioner. Whetstone’s years of service in the business and civic community were recognized by then Governor Mike Pence when Matt was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash.

Currently, Matt serves as a member on First National Bank’s Board of Directors and the Indianapolis International Airport Board. Matt is also a racing enthusiast and is proud to serve as an IndyCar Official.

The Whetstones have called Brownsburg home since 1994. Matt and his wife Deanna are the parents of Sadie and Calvin Whetstone. The Whetstone family enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors. ______________________________________________ JEFFREY A. THOMPSON - R STATE REPRESENTATIVE - DISTRICT 28 Jeff Thompson has had the opportunity to serve his community and state in several ways. He has participated in numerous community activities, serving as a member of the Indiana State Fair Board and Indiana State Fair Commission.

In addition, he spent 12 years as a member of the Hendricks County 4-H Fair Board. Other activities include serving as a member of the Hendricks County Extension Board and Indiana Farm Bureau. He has also served as a director for North Salem State Bank for the past 13 years.

Jeff Thompson started at a young age working on his family farm. He put himself through Purdue by operating a hay-baling business. During the next 20 years, he co-managed and operated their several hundred-acre livestock and crop farm. Since 2000, Thompson has continued his involvement in agriculture with a small hay and straw business.

Thompson is a North Salem High School alumnus and graduated from Purdue University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in physics. He spent more than 30 years in education, teaching chemistry, physics and math at Danville Community High School.

First elected in 1998, Thompson currently serves on the House Education Committee and as K-12 Subcommittee chair of the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Thompson lives near Lizton with his wife, and has six children and two grandchildren. An active member of Northview Christian Church, he serves on their administrative/finance committee. ______________________________________________ CPT (R) JOHN L. My name is CPT(R) John L. Futrell. I am a candidate for this office. I was born in the state of Arkansas. My family and I moved to Indianapolis in 1983. Thursday, March 31, 2022 CRAIG HAGGARD - R STATE REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT 57 Lt Colonel Craig Haggard(retired) graduated from Mooresville High School in 1987 and received his bachelor’s degree from Hanover College in 1991. Upon graduation from college, Haggard was commissioned the same day as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He attended Primary and Advanced Jet training where he graduated #1 in his flight class. Haggard flew the AV8B Harrier jet in combat during Operation Allied Force in Kosovo among other operations.

In 2000, Lt Col Haggard joined the Indiana Air National Guard where he flew the F-16C Falcon with the181st Fighter Wing. From 2001 to 2013, he served as Commander, Atterbury HQ Detachment 1, Air to Ground Gunnery Range.

After retiring from his joint military service, he was hired by the National Rifle Association (NRA) as the Indiana Field Representative. Haggard led the NRA’s statewide community outreach and awareness efforts, including coordinating awarding of NRA grants for youth shooting programs, training opportunities, and safety initiatives to ensure the future of our Second Amendment rights.

HENDRICKS COUNTY CANDIDATES LAURA HERZOG - R HENDRICKS COUNTY RECORDER After five years of preparing, I am excited and proud to announce that I have filed my declaration of candidacy for the Republican nominee as Hendricks County Recorder.

In January of 1995, I began my career in Hendricks County when Connie Lawson, Clerk of Courts, offered me a position at the courthouse in the file room. Soon after, she asked I transfer to her office of voter registration. Almost immediately upon taking office, Nicki was tasked with addressing the effects of a national pandemic, skyrocketing home prices and an unprecedented number of new home construction.

Thursday, March 31, 2022 DAVE GALLOWAY - R HENDRICKS COUNTY SHERRIFF Dave Galloway is a career police officer who spent over 30 years with the Brownsburg Police Department. He held most every position and rank with the BPD and served as Chief of Police for almost seven years. He was elected Hendricks County Sheriff in 2006 and served two terms (eight years). He utilized uniform personnel, more efficient and improved patrol coverage, response time to calls for service and better safety for citizens/businesses.

He also improved security at the Jail, Court House and Government Center.

Galloway believes ALL people should be treated equally, with respect and dignity. However, he strongly believes criminals, especially violent criminals should be held accountable for their actions.

Dave is a veteran of the US Army and served 21 years.

He is a Christian and he and wife Jeane attend Connection Pointe Christian Church and Faith Baptist Church of Avon. He has been and still is very active in his hometown of Brownsburg. I have been a resident in Hendricks County for over 25 years. I’m married, a father and a retired police officer. I feel that it is in my nature to step up and volunteer when the need arises.

Whether public service, private clubs or just helping neighbors have always been willing to help. As with this virus we are going through things happen and quick decisions have to be made as best as you can. When possible decisions should be left to the individual as they know their own health better than anyone else. SCOTT - R HENDRICKS COUNTY COUNCIL - DISTRICT 2 My youth was spent growing up in nearby Boone County. After graduation from high school I entered Purdue University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.

Upon graduation I began working for the Indiana State Highway Commission as a design engineer. After four years of design experience and passing the examination, I received my Professional Engineer’s license to practice engineering in the State of Indiana. Eventually I reached the position of Deputy Commissioner.

Around the time of receiving my engineering license, my wife and I moved to Hendricks County. We have lived in Hendricks County ever since and raised our daughter here.

I have held several public offices including County Engineer, Brown Township Assessor, Brown Township Board, Hendricks County Assessor and currently I serve on the Hendricks County Council representing District 2.

District 2 is comprised of Brown Township and the majority of Lincoln Township.

I have 30 years of experience in preparing and reviewing budgets at the State, County and Local levels.

I am seeking reelection to the County Council. My family is and has Godly-proud represented the Hoosier state within our diverse local communities which we have lived with numerous acts of kindness. TOWNSHIP OFFICES BILL ZIEGERT - D BROWN TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE Bill Ziegert is running to represent Brown Township, Hendricks County as their Trustee.

As a lifelong Indiana resident, I care deeply about making our communities more supportive and inclusive. I grew up in Valparaiso, and have lived in the Indianapolis area since graduating from Indiana University in 1987.

My wife Amy and I have been married for over 30 years, and our two adult children and two unbelievably wonderful grandchildren all still live in Central Indiana.

My goals in running for public office are to become better educated, more energized and more broadly engaged in how our government can better support our citizens.

In 2022, Hodson and Board will have eliminated (2) twenty-year bonds from 2007 five years early, resulting in saving the taxpayers money.

Mendenhall works full time for the Indianapolis Colts as a corporate aircraft mechanic. He also operates a lawncare & snow removal business, as well as taking over the everyday operations on his family farm, growing corn and soybeans. While he works a lot, he enjoys boating and camping with his family, and helping his kids with their 4-H projects, including swine.

He enjoys meeting new people, learning new things, and serving his community. He currently serves on the Union Township Advisory Board, and is excited to keep serving in that role. Mendenhall and his family are members and regular attenders at Your Venture Church in Lizton where Nate had the privilege and honor to baptize his son Reece. ______________________________________________

RYAN MILLER - R WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE First moving to Washington Township in 1980, Ryan has lived his entire life here in the area. He’s a 1996 graduate of Avon High School where he participated in the Avon Marching Black & Gold and was also an active member of the Washington Township/Avon Fire Department Explorer Program. Upon graduation, he began serving the community, working as a Washington Township/Avon Fire Department volunteer firefighter.

In 1999 Ryan started his career after being hired as a career firefighter at Brownsburg Fire Territory. Obtaining merit ranks of Lieutenant and later Captain, he is currently serving as a Battalion Chief. During his tenure, he has also held the appointments of Public Information Officer, Public Educator, and Deputy Chief of Operations under various administrations. Servant Leadership is all he has known during his adult life and the Trustee position for Washington Township is another level of service to continue his calling of serving the community where he has lived nearly his entire life.

Ryan and his wife Sherry, a Brownsburg graduate who he married in 2001, chose Washington Township as the area that they wanted to raise their children. Their two boys have both taken steps to follow the path of public service as their potential careers, with their oldest currently serving as a volunteer firefighter and their youngest, a junior at Avon High School, enrolled in the Area 31 Firefighter program.

Ryan is proud of his ties to Washington Township and the Avon Community. He has been afforded many opportunities over the years and looks forward to the opportunity to give back to the community that he loves. ______________________________________________ STAN ALBAUGH - D WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE Stan Albaugh is running for Washington Township Trustee and on a platform to unify the unincorporated area of Washington Township with the Town of Avon. Stan is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel with over 30 years active-duty service and has a Master’s Degree in Business Management. Stan retired in his wife’s hometown and has been a Hoosier for the past 14 years. Stan has been married to Brenda Wolven Albaugh for 40 years, they have 5 grown children, and 10 grandchildren.

Stan enlisted in the U.S. Air Force security forces after high school in 1972, earned his bachelor’s degree, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1979. He flew B-52s, B-1Bs, and E-3s with multiple deployments in the Persian Gulf. Throughout his 30 plus years of active-duty military service, Stan managed multiple organizations, personnel and contracts, multimillion-dollar budgets and multibillion-dollar capital assets. He was also a division chief at the Pentagon during 9/11 and deployed to Baghdad in 2004.

In 2008, after retirement from the military, Stan was hired by the U.S. Department of State and served two years in Iraq as the Deputy Team Leader of an Embedded Provincial Reconstruction Team in Southern Baghdad Province. He directed and coordinated a multi-agency team effort to restore the government of Iraq capabilities.

After returning from Iraq, Stan obtained a real estate brokers license, founded his construction company, and began buying, rehabilitating, and selling real estate. Stan is focused on unifying the unincorporated area of Washington Township with the Town of Avon, so we can all have a voice and a vote in Avon. ______________________________________________

Amanda Babinec is a 38-year native of Washington Township and is passionate about serving the community where she lives. In addition to being a township board member for the past three years, Amanda is currently the Executive Director of the Avon Education Foundation and has also been the Executive Director for the Avon Junior Athletic Association. Prior to that, she ran the Simon Kidgits Club at more than 100 malls across the country while serving as the Manager of Business Development at Simon Malls. In these non-profit and corporate positions, Amanda has been in charge of budgets between $200,000 - $2,000,000.

Amanda is a seasoned business professional specializing in marketing and event planning and has a proven track record of identifying savings and synergies for both small and large businesses.

During her time as a board member of Washington Township, the current administration has paid off long standing debt, built a much needed fourth fire station, added Pock Park, and will be opening the state’s only ADA accessible water park this summer. Our administration is also passionate about working in collaboration with the other taxing entities in our community to find efficiencies in government for our tax payers. We will continue to be forward thinkers, while being smart and strategic with spending.

Amanda lives in Prestwick with her husband Bryan and enjoys watching her 3 three daughters, Kelsey, 15, Halle, 13, and Bailey, 11, play a multitude of sports. Her children attend Avon Community Schools and it is with great pride that she helps support the school corporation and township through her professional and elected positions. ______________________________________________

Shane Sommers is the Vice President of Professional Services at Hendricks Regional Health. He is a graduate of the University of Indianapolis and Duke University, with undergraduate degrees in biology and chemistry and a master’s degree in physical therapy Shane is committed to community volunteerism, serving as a board member for many organizations both past and present. He serves as a board member for the Hendricks Regional Health YMCA, Hendricks Community Foundation and Hendricks County Senior Services. He is a 2009 graduate of the Leadership Hendricks County. He was named the 2018 Leadership Hendricks County Leader of the Year for his outstanding efforts to lead by example and enable success by serving as a collaborator, a facilitator, a peacemaker and visionary.

I am seeking re-election to the Washington Township Board to continue the great things that we have done in the last four years. STEVEN D, BLACKETER - R WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP BOARD Steve Blacketer has been an Avon resident since 1973 along with his wife of 52 years, Ellen. They are members of Fairfield Friends Meeting and Steve is an active member of the Avon Kiwanis Club and the Avon Rotary Club. They have three married children and six grandchildren.

In 2014, his accounting firm was merged into Kemper CPA Group. Steve retired from Kemper on December 31, 2018. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a Chartered Global Management Accountant and a member of the Indiana CPA Society.

Steve currently serves as the Treasurer for the Avon Chamber of Commerce. Since mid-2018, he has been a member of the Washington Township Board. Steve is also the Treasurer of the Hendricks County Republican Party, the Hendricks County Trail Development Association, the Avon Rotary Club and the Hendricks College Network. He has previously served as an officer of the Avon Soccer Association and Avon Sports Boosters. In addition to the joy of being a grandparent, Steve, in his spare time, enjoys gardening, camping, and bicycling.

TRACY JUSTICE - R WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP BOARD Hi, my name is Tracy Justice and I’m running for a seat with the Washington Township Board.

Our family moved to Avon in January of 2016.

Between my husband and I, we have five children: two attending Avon Schools, one in college and two adult children. We have twin grandsons and are expecting another grandson in June.

I enjoy learning about our community, getting involved and meeting new people. I’m grateful to have been a part of my son’s school PTO, the Avon Community Heritage Festival Board, Avon Parks, Recreation, and Beautification council, Oriole Advocates, AUMC Mom2Moms, and most recently, the B & O Trails Association.

Besides being a volunteer in the community, I’ve also worked as the HR Director for the Washington Township Trustee’s office from 2020-21 and have gained valuable insight on how the office operates.

TOWN OFFICES GREG IRBY - R DANVILLE TOWN COUNCIL - WARD 1 Greg Irby is a local attorney, small business owner, husband, and father who loves living and raising his family in the Town of Danville.

Greg practices law from his law office on the town square where he focuses on business law and real estate matters. Prior to hanging up his own shingle, Greg was an associate for Steuerwald Hannon & Witham in Danville.

Greg doesn’t just say he cares about investing in our town, he does it, as he and his wife are also part owners of one of the newest additions to the square, Danville Dips.

Greg and his wife, Melissa (Sauer), have been married for 10 years and the pair met in law school. They stay busy these days trying to keep up with their two-year-old son, Ryan, and six-year-old daughter, Myla, who started Kindergarten this past fall at Danville’s North Elementary. Melissa enjoys taking care of Ryan and taking on parttime legal work now that Myla is in school.

In the political realm, Greg has served as the Vice Chairman of the Hendricks County Republican Party for the past eight years. Greg is also a member of the Danville Rotary Club, Phi Delta Kappa, and Western Star Masonic Lodge No 26.

Greg received his legal education at Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney Law School and has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Purdue University.

He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Hendricks County Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association.

Greg has been attending town council meetings and engaging in local politics for many years. Wynn was born and has lived his entire life in Danville. He is married to Stacy and has two sons, Jackson, a Senior baseball player at the University of West Alabama and Dominick, a freshman football player at The University of Mount Union in NE Ohio. Dennis graduated from Danville High School in 1989 and Indiana University in 1994.

Wynn is a proven leader in both the public and private sector as Wynn serves as a Regional Business Development Manager in the medical device industry and has been in Sales Leadership in the medical/surgical arena for over 15 years. Wynn’s civic involvement for over 20 years including 12 years on the Danville Town Council include: Hendricks County Precinct Committeeman, Danville Plan Commission, Danville Economic and Redevelopment Committee, Danville BZA, Elected Danville Metropolitan Police Merit Board member elected by the Officers,Liaison to the Danville Fire Department, Center and Marion Township Emergency Medical Services joint board, Danville Football Boosters, Danville Basketball Boosters, Danville Downtown Partnership, Summer Sounds, and Mayberry in the Midwest Committee.

Dennis’ perspective and understanding that with the addition of 2,000 new homes in Danville our community needs someone with experience in making sure Danville is prepared for this grown and large influx in population.

Kyle Martin moved his family to the town of Pittsboro for that small community feel almost five years ago. Kyle has been married to his wife, Angela, for almost ten years. Their five year old daughter, Emily, keeps them going and is part of the reason Kyle has a passion for Pittsboro. She is currently attending the Cubs preschool program at the Pittsboro Primary School.

Kyle is an independent software consultant where he specializes in implementing ERP software for large clients. His current project has him working with the United States Army.

Kyle has enjoyed participating in the Town Council meetings in the past and feels the next best step is to be part of it. He also recently participated in the joint sessions of the Town Council and Advance Planning Commission to redefine the Comprehensive Plan and the Unified Development Ordinance to help shape the town.

Kyle feels that the success of any software project starts with the people and infrastructure and that same philosophy should be applied in the town too. He has been a member of the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce since 2005, and was elected and served as president in 2012. He has served on the Hendricks County Tourism Commission and is a 2013 graduate of Leadership Hendricks County.

My wife Lisa and I moved to Plainfield a little over 20 years ago. We moved here specifically to raise our children in this town and in the Plainfield School system. We have never regretted that decision. I am a long-time supporter of Quaker Athletics. Also, I have coached Plainfield girls softball and also basketball in our town’s fine youth programs. I was also a show choir dad and helped build sets for more than a few plays at PHS. In my time here, I have volunteered in many charity capacities with the Kiwanis. Helping make that club the number one growth organization in the county. I believe my fiscally conservative viewpoints would be a welcome addition to the town council. I believe the town would benefit from a fresh set of eyes as we move forward. I believe we can move forward and grow without losing our smalltown identity.

One of my primary focuses is on the traffic issues in the Plainfield area, especially with the increase of heavy truck traffic, and many traffic signal controlled intersection that seem to get backlogged or delayed throughout the day, especially at rush hours Another area I would like to see Improved is the contact between the town residents and the Town Hall about getting residents’s concerns properly addressed and problems more quickly resolved I have my eye on many other local issues and topics but I’ll keep this opportunity to reach out to the voters brief for now I am on the ballot with two other fine gentleman who I know have genuine concerns about the Plainfield community and I look forward to have an opportunity to share the many ideas between us and the local residents before the Primary election which is on Tuesday May 3, 2022.
