50¢ Published Weekly in Danville, Indiana
Old Year Out
There’s a piece of furniture at The Republican with a unique purpose. Sitting against the east wall in the shop area, it has 12 rows of shelves, one for each month. Each row contains sections for extra copies of each weekly issue. The upper left cubby hole is for the first issue of January. The one on the bottom right, the last issue of December. This newspaper, under the title, “The Republican,” will turn 141 years old next week. The editor will change the seldom noticed numbers under the front page banner to read “Volume 141, Number 1.” That’s 7,358 editions since 1881. There is a rhythm in producing a weekly newspaper, as news is gathered, made up to fill columns, then sent to the printer where the process ends, and at the same time, begins again. As the late Betty Jean Weesner put it, “It’s the same thing every week, but different.” The first issue of 2022 will begin the third year under our present publisher, Jerry Vornholt.
