The Danville Community Middle School 8th grade football team wrapped up their 2021 season with a convincing win at Western Boone to remain undefeated while earning another Sagamore Conference Champion title. The first season this Class of 2026 started playing together as one single team was their 6th grade season and from that point they have remained unbeaten while collecting three straight Sagamore Conference Championships. Congratulations on what they have accomplished and good luck in high school, Friday night lights could look really bright for this group!

Headed into the final week of the regular season, Danville already had its eyes set on Greencastle, who visits Warrior Stadium on October 22 for the first round of Sectional, and for what they hope is the start of a second straight 21-mile trip to Lucas Oil Stadium. A trip to North Montgomery seemed to be a good final warm up prior to entering the post season. There was one element of the game, however, for which it is nearly impossible to game-plan. Several days of rain left the confines of the North Montgomery Char- gers football field a soggy and muddy mess. We will call this Mud Bowl 2021.

I received a text from someone well into the second quarter who had just checked the score for the first time. At that particular moment, the game was still knotted up at 0-0. The text read, “What’s wrong with Danville?” The tone was genuine concern about the team, and perhaps the all-star quarterback being injured. Not to worry, I told them, it is tough to get offense going when the field is better suited for a Tough Mudder contest than a high school football game. Nevertheless, it was indeed a football game, and not just any game, but one that would allow the Danville Warriors to claim a second straight Sagamore Championship if they came out as victors.

As one might expect with the conditions on the ground, finding positive yardage and getting the offense in a position was not something that would happen early, or often. Eventually, the Danville offense would muster enough offensive success to put kicker Caleb Harvey in a position to kick a 26-yard field goal to give Danville a 3-0 lead. This would be the half-time score as there were a combined 6 punts or turnover’s on failed fourth down conversions in the half.

The third quarter would be a yawner as nether team could find the groove and the Chargers would punt twice while Danville turned the ball over on another failed fourth down conversion.

The Warriors would eventually find a way to march the team down the field when Kale Payne connected with Tyler Dostin for 15 yards and a score that would briefly ignite the Danville fan base and all but put this game away. Caleb Harvey added the extra point and Danville led 10-0.

Sometimes in football, how you get to a win is not nearly as important as getting the win. Danville did what they needed to do, finished 8-1 on the season and were able to seal the outright Sagamore Conference Championship for 2021.

Congratulations Warriors on a great regular season and good luck in the post season!

Indiana Lyons on Pre-season Winning Streak

Courtside seats are okay, but some say the view from Dad’s shoulders is the best way to view the game.

The Indiana Lyons are on a pre-season roll, winning their game against the Midwest Falcons last Saturday, 137-67.

Danville’s Dillon Ware (#4) was the top scorer with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 3 steals.

Kenny Davis (#0) collected 23 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Kendric Lee (#8) contributed 11 points, 8 assists and 5 steals.

The Indiana Lyons are members of the American Basketball Association (ABA), and are Hendricks County’s only professional sports team. Home games are played at Bosstick Gym, 49 N. Wayne St., in Danville. Now in their third season, they are the 2020-21 ABA Central Region Champions and competed in the 2021 ABA Final Eight Tournament.

Danville’s Dillon Ware (#4) helps the ball find the hoop in the preseason game against the Midwest Falcons.

Lyons merchandise is available at all games, as well as traditional concessions. Players enjoy interacting with the fans after the game for autographs and photos.

The next preseason game is Saturday, October 23, at 5 p.m., in Bosstick Gym, 49 N. Wayne, Danville, when the Lyons play against the Chi Town Rebels.
