JUDITH A. RETTIG

83, native of Brownsburg, passed away May 23, 2021.

Judy, known as the “monkey lady” was the former owner of the Exotic Animal Kingdom in Indianapolis, a home for abused, unwanted exotic animals as well as retired circus animals.

She was known for her amazing cooking. She loved the holidays and gardening with her family. She was a firecracker and if you had any problems, she would tell you to pull up your “big girl panties.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence B. and Doris M. Williams, sister Sandra Williams, and brother Steven Williams.

Survivors include daughters Belinda Douglass and April Hicks (spouse Andrea Bell), grandchildren Logan Spicer and Lennon Bell- Hicks, her beloved caregivers and close family, Debi Swinford and Amber Walters, many nieces and nephews, her cousin and best friend Bonnie Tipton, her “adopted” children Robin Graves and Bryce Marsh and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Phoenix at P.O. Box 88 Shirley, IN 47384. This wonderful nonprofit organization is home to several of Judy’s exotic animals.

Memorial visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 5, at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, with memorial services there at 12:30 p,m.

GERALDINE “JERRY” CHRISTINE GOSS

92, of Greencastle, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

Born August 16, 1928 in Hendricks County, she was the daughter of Samuel Roy and Elizabeth (Jarnigan) Wood and was a graduate of Bainbridge High School “Class of 1946.”

Geraldine was a farm wife and homemaker. She loved to paint, draw, garden, and grew beautiful flowerbeds.

She was a member of the Fillmore United Methodist Church and the Stitch and Chatter Club.

Geraldine is survived by her daughters, Mary Jane Glaze and husband, John and Patricia Ann Miller and husband, Robert Jr.; her sister, Emma Jean Wood; grandsons, John Glaze Jr and friend, Lisa and Dan Glaze and wife, Angie; great-grandchildren, Jacob Wright, Macey Shuee and husband, Zach, Hailey Buskirk & husband, Nick, and Damon Glaze and wife, Brittany; Samuel, Manny, and Seth Glaze and nine great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Goss; sister, Marie Knudson; and brothers, Albert, Odell, and Norman Wood.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 2, at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle. Interment followed at the Stilesville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Geraldine’s memory to the Fillmore United Methodist Church.

CHARLOTTE BARNETT

of Indianapolis, formerly of North Salem, passed away November 13, 2019.

She was born in Lizton, to Paul Otto and Naomi LeSeurt Leach.

Charlotte is survived by her daughters, Carol Barnett Chipman and Janice Barnett Anacker, brother, Paul Leach, Jr., 15 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Naomi, husband, Howard Barnett and 10 siblings.

She was a member of the North Salem United Methodist Church. She owned and operated a beauty salon in North Salem, for many years. Charlotte and her husband, Howard, owned farms around North Salem throughout their marriage.

A graveside service will be held, Friday, June 4, at 3 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in North Salem.

HAROLD ALLEN SMALL

84, of Ladoga, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2021.

Born October 20, 1936 in Tipton County to Cary Willington Small and Hester Leah George. He was the youngest of five. He had three brothers, Stanley, James, and Donald, as well as a sister, Jean.

He graduated from North Salem High School in 1954. He worked a few years as a carpenter before becoming a lifelong farmer.

He married Norma Livesay on October 28, 1955 in Hillsboro, Indiana. Together they had one daughter, Carol Jean Strater, and one son, John Small, three granddaughters, Tiffany Lynn, Kyrie Nicole, Jesse Denee, and one grandson, Justin Alan. He also had two great grandsons, Jameison Allen and Karson, and six great granddaughters, Macey, Kayli, Kennedy, Jesslynn, Jadeis, and Jianna.

He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in North Salem, the Masonic Lodge, and Northern Star. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, wood working, and his family and friends

JONATHAN DANIEL SHROUT

32, of Avon, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021.

Jonathan was born December 31, 1988 in Indianapolis to Danny Evans and Kathy Jo (Powers) Shrout. He graduated from Avon High School in 2007. He worked in the construction and concrete profession.

Jonathan is survived by his children, Desi Shrout, Kaiden Shrout and Serenity Brown- Shrout; parents; grandmother, Margaret Faye (Hill) Powers and his fiancée, Brittany Nicole Brown, his siblings, Angela (Greg) Owen, Denise (Greg Lewis) Bivens and Dannie (Tracey) Shrout and his nieces and nephews.

Services were Thursday, May 27, at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway with entombment in West Ridge Park Cemetery.

DIANE “DEE” WOOLLEY EDWARDS

72, of Plainfield, passed away on May 31, 2021.

Dee was born on December 21, 1948 in Randolph, MA to the late Barbara (Hill) and Thomas B. MacPhee.

Dee worked for Pro Trans International for 15 years, retiring in 2012. She was a member of the New Beginnings Church in Plainfield.

She is survived by her husband Robert R. “Bob” Edwards, Jr.; sons Ronald Dale Woolley, Jr. (Dawn Woolley), Joshua H. Woolley (Michael Tarr); stepsons Robert R. Edwards III (Valerie Edwards), Eric S. Edwards (Chasity Edwards); siblings Thomas W. MacPhee, Marsha MacPhee-Webster, Glen MacPhee; her beloved grandchildren Kristin L. Williams, Ryan Edwards, Carla Milborne, Britni Tarr and great grandchildren Avana Milborne, Connor DeCamp and Isabelle DeCamp.

Private services will be at al later date. Contributions in Dee’s memory may be made to the Desert Rose Foundation PO Box 1754 Martinsville, IN 46151.

JIMMIE LEE CARLTON

age 69, of Pittsboro, peacefully passed away on May 26, 2021.

He was born in Lebanon, Indiana on April 17, 1952, the son of Ray and Norma (Whitaker) Carlton.

Jimmie began his career in the family business of excavating with his father and brother, eventually branching out on his own as the owner of Jim Carlton Excavating. He later owned and operated Jim’s Clermont Plastic Pipe. Once retiring in January 2016, Jimmie enjoyed winters in Florida, fishing with grandkids and regular family cookouts. His hobbies were riding motorcycles, hunting, watching westerns, auto racing and car shows.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Scharbrough) Carlton; mother, Norma (Whitaker) Carlton; daughters, Angel (Brian) Pittman and Nancy Carlton; grandchildren Brittany (Zack King) Carlton, Bryce Dickey and Briana Pittman; great-grandchildren Ellyana, Leah, Jocelyn, Lathan and Bella; siblings, Doris Ragsdale, Donald (Janet) Carlton & Anita (David) Marsh and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Carlton and brother-in-law Jim Ragsdale.

Services took place at Eric M.D. Bell funeral home on Saturday, May 29. Interment was at the K of P Cemetery, Lizton. Memorial gifts have been suggested to the Pittsboro Phi Beta Psi Sorority for Cancer Research

TOM KIRBY

65, of Jamestown, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

He was born May 21, 1956 to the late Morris and Rose (Ghere) Kirby.

He was a season ticket member of the Indianapolis Colts. He loved his football, car shows and camping.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Karen Kirby, children, Rose (Travis) Griffin and Tek Kirby, 9 grandchildren, nephews, David Kirby and Todd Kirby and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Rose and brothers, Bill and Joe.

MARGARET LOUISE (Denham) WALSH

66, Avon, passed away May 25, 2021.

She was born and raised on the Southside of Indy. Margaret married the love of her life, John, July 22, 1977 at St. Catherine’s church of Indianapolis.

Margaret started her career at St. Francis of Beech Grove as a candy striper and eventually worked as a unit secretary for a critical care unit. When her girls were older, she made a career move to work as a senior staffer at RN Specialties.

She took her role as a grandma seriously and came equipped with gifts and candy. Like her father, she spoke in song and could come up with a little ditty for any situation.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania St., where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Inurnment will take place on a later date in Calvary Cemetery.

FLORA THELMA CREECH CHRISTENSEN

88, passed away peacefully at her residence on May 27, 2021.

She was married to Ernest “Chris” Christensen for 58 years. He passed November 2, 2010. Together they owned and operated Chris’ Lizton Market for 30 years.

Flora was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her daughters, Rebecca Hogan (Michael), Jane Panarites (Steve), Melissa Myers (Mike) and son David (Karen); grandchildren Rachael and Lauren Hogan, Kate (Evan) Steele, Molly Christensen, and Michael Brodie Myers; great grandchildren Ava Hogan, Colby and Reese Steele.She is also survived by sisters, Lohoma Vertuca, Virginia Faulkner, Margaret Smith, Nancy Bonnema, Phyllis Cable and Frances Brooks.

Flora had resided at Traditions at Reagan Park in Avon for the past several years where she had many friends. Her very special friend was Bonnie Storen and her devoted sister, Margaret Smith. The family truly appreciates the staff at Traditions for their loving care and support for many years and to Brookdale Hospice for the recent care. Her daughter, Jane, has been her constant caregiver and devoted friend especially since Chris passed away. She was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Memorial services took place Tuesday, June 1, at the Eric MD Bell Funeral Home in Pittsboro.Burial followed in the Lizton K of P Cemetery.

JANELLE GRIFFIN PALMER

passed away Wednesday, May 26 at Life Journey (a hospice care facility in Avon) with her husband and daughters at her bedside.

The daughter of the late Paul W. and Katie Langley Griffin, she was born April 15, 1931 in Augusta, Georgia. She attended the public schools of Columbia County and was a graduate of Tubman High School in Augusta, Georgia. She was united in marriage to Reverend Lester D Palmer May 6, 1951.

She has been in Hospice Care for more than a year. In spite of her difficulties, she has maintained a good attitude and generous spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, (Paul and Katie Griffin) and a sister (Mrs. Catherine Keys).

She is survived by her husband and children, Gwen (Dr Andrew) Chandler, Augusta, Ga., Kathy (Brian) Hagemier, Danville; Sandra (Ret. Col David) Wood, Danville; and Leslie (Paul) Kopecky, Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Home-- Washington Park North on Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m.The family has suggested memorial gifts be made to Northwood Christian Church or to the charity of your choice.

DONALD G. SCOTT

83, Brownsburg, passed away on May 25, 2021.

He was born April 27, 1938 and grew up in Danville. He graduated from Danville High School and Rose Hulman with a degree in civil engineering. In 1993, he retired from the State of Indiana Highway Department.

Don married the love of his life, Jean, in 1958. They settled in Brownsburg where they lived for over 50 years.

Don belonged to the Connection Pointe Christian Church where he served in various roles over the years. He was known as the “Tomato Man” to his neighbors and friends. He grew the most beautiful tomatoes. His favorite pastimes were IU sports, fishing with his son and being with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris Jean Nichols Scott; daughter, Tammy (Scott) Spelbring; son, Evan and his wife, Julia Scott; two grandsons, Brandon Spelbring and Corey Scott; brother-in-law, Ross Nichols and his wife Sharon.

Services were Friday, May 28 at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg. Burial followed in Brownsburg Cemetery.

BETTY J. PARSONS

78, of Danville, passed away on May 30, 2021.

She was born on October 2, 1942 in Tilden, Indiana to the late Jared and Hazel English. Betty was a loving wife and a dedicated homemaker. She belonged to the House Of Victory Church.

Betty was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband, Lyle Parsons, and a brother, Jared English.

She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her sons, Louis (Carol) Parsons, Lyle “Charlie Brown” (Angela) Parsons, Mark (Linda) Parsons and Martin Hatley Parsons; daughters, Starr (John) Little, Lyla Hatley, Elizabeth (Earl) Carter and Vicki Judd; brother, James English; sisters, Mary Eva Perry, Hazel Riddle, Anna Ruth Wymer and Jery Lou Wallace; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 greatgreat grandchildren.

Graveside services will be private in Maple Hill Cemetery. Arrangements: Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.

ROSALIND SAKALARES

90, Brownsburg, passed away on May 28, 2021.

She was a medical transcriber.

She was preceded in death by her parents Dewey and Velma Vose.

Survivors include her children Janis Spence, James Sakalares, Christine (Jeff) Owen, Mark (Jay) Sakalares, William (Julie) Sakalares; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

ROBERT C. VEREEN

96, of Avon passed away May 29, 2021.

He was born September 8, 1924 in Stillwater, Minn., the son of George and Leona Wihren.

Robert served our country in the U.S. Army during W.W.II. He was the editor of Do It Yourself Retailing Magazine. He was a member of Worldwide Do It Yourself Retailing Counsel, Who’s Who and St. Susanna Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Vereen; he is survived by his children, Robin Lynn Vereen, Stacy Lee (Richard) Griffin and Kim Ann (Kenneth) Cole, grandchildren, Casey Cole and Carly Cole.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday June 3, 2021 at St. Susanna Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Conkle Funeral Home, Avon Chapel. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel.

PAULINE RUTH WOEST

92, Avon, formerly of Brownsburg, passed away May 31, 2021.

A devout Lutheran her whole life, she was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Brownsburg.

Her husband, Clement L. Woest, preceded her in death in 2008.

She is survived by her children Jean Martin (husband Tim), Daniel Woest (wife Barbara) and Kay Chance; sister Gloria Bentley; grandchildren Valeri Mullins (husband Jeffrey) and Samuel Martin; great grandchildren Herschel and Hailey Blankenship; cousin Wayne Scherer.

There will be private services and she will be laid to rest next to husband in Brownsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 S. Green St., Brownsburg, IN 46112.
