Plainfield Forum Plainfield Friends Church, in cooperation with the Plainfield Chamber of Commerce, is offering a Community Forum series to keep all residents engaged and informed about many different aspects of the community – as well as some good entertainment!

The first Community Forum Night will be Tuesday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Plainfield Friends Church, 105 S. East St., Plainfield.. Reann Poray and Sarah Wright of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Library will be speaking about “The History of Plainfield”, and Bill Clendineng will talk about the role of churches in the history of Plainfield. Everyone is welcome to attend! Masks are encouraged, but not required at this event.

Legion Post 118 Hosts Cook-Out

American Legion Post 118, 846 S. SR 39, Danville, will host an outdoor Cook-Out on Saturday, May 22, from noon to 6 p.m.

The community is invited to enjoy free burgers, brats, and dogs, with sides.

There will be a charge for drinks.

There will be games for the kids, bounce house, and corn hole.

The public is inviteded to attend. ___________ Dogs never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation.

Hendricks County Senior Services offers a food pantry for Hendricks County seniors, including perishable, nonperishable, and hygiene products.

The food pantry is open by appointment only.

Individuals must be 60 years old or older and must be a resident of Hendricks County.

US 36 Bridge at Avon To Be Replaced

The Indiana Department of Transportation announces work begins on or after Tuesday, June 1 on the U.S. 36 Bridge over White Lick Creek, located on the west side of Avon.

The U.S. 36 westbound bridge will be replaced.

Traffic will utilize crossovers and be shifted into one 16’ lane in both directions on the eastbound bridge.

Work is scheduled to last through November 5 of this year.

This project was awarded to Rieth Riley Construction for $2.8 million.

INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. __________

Coatesville Woman Killed In Crash

Alyssa Couch, 27, of Coatesville, was killed when her car crashed into an oncoming dump truck on SR 75, north of Coatesville.

Deputies were called to the 4100 block of South SR 75, just north of Coatesville at approximately 3:08 p.m., on Thursday, May 20.

Preliminary investigation indicataed that Couch’s car was southbound when it went left of center and was struck by the northbound dump truck. Couch died at the scene; an infant in the car was transported to an Indianapolis hospital by medical helicopter. The drive of the dump truck was not injured.

State Police and Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the cause of the crash. __________

It’s Dogtona!

Can you hear the tails a’waggin? Canines across the county are counting down to Sunday, May 23, 12-4 p.m. and the return of Dogtona! The event was cancelled last year, but Hendricks Humane is bringing back the popular “Spring Break” for dogs.

Hendricks Humane created Dogtona! to provide people with an inexpensive, fun day for their dogs, to promote the adoption of homeless dogs in area shelters and rescue groups, and to educate the public on pet responsibility. Dogs must be leashed (no retractables), current on vaccinations, and not be in heat to participate in the event.

Admission is $5 per dog (people admitted free).

The 2021 Dogtona! will take place at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds, but in a new location, in the Dairy/Beef Cattle Pavillion.

Enjoy a variety of interesting demonstrations and exhibitors (lots of freebies!). The K-9 Kafé will serve chips, candy and water. More food provided by Custard Dogs Food Truck.

HCHS Pet Food Pantry Danville Fire Chief Rob Roberts presented former Fire Chief Mark Morgan with his retirement ax after 35 years of service. The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the presentation ceremony since Morgans retirement in April of 2019 and subsequent move to Danville Town Manager.

Mark Morgan signed up as a volunteer firefighter in November of 1985. Morgan progressed through the ranks during his tenure at the Danville Fire Department. Morgan started as a Firefighter and moving onto Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief and ultimately being appointed the first full-time Fire Chief for the Danville Fire Department.

Roberts served as Morgan’s Assistant Chief for the duration of his 19 years as Chief.

“Together we made a lot of changes for the fire department. I can remember back in the day fighting fires and riding the backstep of the fire engine with Morgan. During his time as Chief, we went from being a volunteer fire department to a full-time career fire department,” stated Roberts. “Mark Morgan has spent more than three decades serving the residents of Danville, Center, and Marion Townships, keeping us safe. He is a great firefighter, leader, and friend. We thank him for his devotion to the town and the residents.

While the Hendricks Humane office is closed, Hendricks County Humane Society’s Pet Food Pantry is still operating.

Delving Into Yester~Year

Local historian and writer Paul Miner takes items from

The Republican’s Yester-Year column to develop an interesting, informative and often humorous article.

To the Editor: Country folk had fun a century ago. Take Leslie Goodwin of New Winchester early in May 1921 when friends helped kill 152 rats in his barn.

Yet they let one escape. Perhaps kindness prompted their moderation.

“Hundreds of rats of the voracious kind” infested the barns and buildings of farms near Anderson in 1890. Nearly twice the size of “the common wharf rat,” they resembled muskrats. Although heavily trapped, their numbers were undiminished.

Harvey G. Moore north of Montclair killed 96 rats in May 1899. All he had to do is move corn and rubbish around in his barn.

Didn’t anyone have terriers and cats back then in those pestilent sheds?

My brother and I enjoyed killing mice while shoveling corn from cribs. We’d slam them with our scoop shovels. Insatiate barn cats and a murderous terrier were arrayed around the perimeter. None escaped. We’d see rats occasionally.

There were “armies of rats” swarming across Warrick County in the spring of 1890, and the Pleasant Hill Lodge of the Farmers’ Mutual Benefit Association laid siege. Two weeks later, 9,967 rats lay dead on the field of battle, their tails taken as trophy proof.

I rather hope those farmers left their shotguns at home. Close quarters fighting could end up with feet blown off. Sledge hammers? Axes?

Rooster Cogburn used a .45. Any of the aforementioned weapons likely would necessitate extensive barn repairs. I’d use a terrier. Bite, kill, on to the next rat.

Millions of rats infested World War I trenches, feeding on death. Terriers were effective then.

Rats caused as much mayhem during the Great War as 200,000 German soldiers, the government reported in 1918. The U.S., alone, had 200 million rats. Each pair could have 20,155,392 descendants in three years.

Rat damage hurt the U.S. war effort. Rats ate animal food, eggs and even baby pigs.

The Republican reported in 1898 a Chinese man, a former Yale scholar, promoted rats for human consumption.

“What a carrot is to a horse’s coat, a rat is to the human hair,” he declared.

Chinese women, he continued, ate rats to stop their hair from falling out and “make the locks soft, silky and beautiful.”

I think I’ve come up with a great new pick-up line. Something like, “Do you eat rats? Your hair is so lustrous.”

Rat, rabbit and squirrel skins were used for fur linings in the late 1880s, but in 1884, more than 1.5 million cats were killed in Liverpool because their skins were “more serviceable.”

That likely resulted in a rat and mouse population boom.

One of Danville’s “professors” experimented with tricking rats to death in 1880.

He placed a block of wood on the center of a plate, laid bread on the block, and then poured enough sulfuric acid on the plate to form what he believed was an impenetrable Rough on Rats was a popular poison inventmoat.

I don’t know whether drunken itinerant printer Colonel Hargett made a mistake in setting type, or the old Union paper meant to confuse credulous locals, but the ad immediately swept into a pledge that Hegeman’s Camphor Ice was the best thing for chapped hands and worked as an aftershave.

In August 1889, Uncle Lige, “an old citizen familiarly known on the public square as a graphic delineator of tragic scenes,” claimed he’d caught 38 rats the first night with a new trap.

“Not satisfied with this enormous haul,” he chased down yet another, “catching him foul and choking the life out of him.”

Uncle Lige was bitten in the struggle, and in a sling claimed he’d contracted rabies.

The Republican doubted the declaration. After all, there were “hundreds of recorded instances of rat bites being cured by the juice of the cornbug.”

Uncle Lige’s hydrophobia “manifestations” more likely were not that rat’s fault, but rather “a jug-full.”

ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Issue of May 21, 1896 Pecksburg: Charley Walls, the genial trustee of Franklin township, has purchased a new wheel, on which he may be seen daily attending to his official business.

Stilesville: John Harding says he has a new kind of corn planted which grows so high you have to use step ladders to gather it. It has no cob. The corn grows in the shuck already shelled. He will sell the seed at one dollar and fifty cents per bushel.

New Winchester: Items are a scarce this week as donations to the heathen.

There are four graduates from Avon school – William Smith, Byron Cox, Esther Guthrie and Irma Huron.

There will be a glorious Fourth of July celebration in Danville this year. It is proposed to have the celebration in the driving park. In the morning there will be some good bicycle races for young American.

After the picnic dinners are disposed of under the trees, the trotters and pacers will be brought out and some good races will be the entertainment.

W.S. Wooten is spending this week in Danville having this trees and underbrush on his nursery property trimmed up. Mr. Wooten has lost considerably by the people cutting down trees and removing them from his property.

Rev. Nelson Greene thinks this is the champion year for potato bugs as he picked thirty-six off of one hill Monday. He thinks he is entitled to the premium.

Mont Clair: Isaac Mendenhall has contracted to furnish 85,000 feet of lumber for the Union Stock Yards. _____ ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO Issue of May 19, 1921 Saturday, the contract for the new school at Lizton was let at a total cost of $110,385. The building is planned on the “T” shape and when completed will be one of the most modern arrangement and equipment to be found in the central states.

Edgar M. Blessing has accepted the position tendered him on the Public Utilities Commission by Governor McCray.

Tonight at the chapel, the forty-first commencement exercises of the Danville high school will be held. The class is counted one of exceptional strength and consists of thirty members.

A wedding party was staged for three o’clock last Saturday afternoon in the private room of the County Recorder’s office in Danville. The contracting parties were Mrs. Almedia Jones and John W. Pounds, of Clayton.

In the window of the Christie grocery is a beautiful vase made from a French 75 casing. It is he handiwork of George R. Fleenor, a student, and was made while Mr. Fleenor was with the American army overseas. His tools were a hammer and two punches.

Amo: On Sunday, May 15th, about thirty-five relatives with well filled baskets met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Cosner to remind Mrs. Cosner that her birthday was near at hand.

Avon: The Huron bridge is out and Enos Denney must travel four miles to go from the house to the barn if he goes around the road.

Rev. William Wallace Curry, 97 years old, once a widely known resident of Danville, died at his home in Washington, Tuesday. As a campaign orator he had a national reputation and his services were in great demand. _____ SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Issue of May 23, 1946 Donald Hogate has been elected president of the Washington, D.C. DePauw alumni club.

Children who are 15 years old or younger, are eligible to enter the first annual Junior Horse Show, to be held Sunday, May 26, under the sponsorship of the Danville Saddle Club at the club grounds, 2 ½ miles north of Danville on Road 39.

Two World War II veterans were laid to rest in the South Cemetery since last Memorial Day, Joe Scearce and Alvin Hall.

A paper by Stanley Shartle appears in the April issue of “Mathematical Tables and Other Aids to Compute,” published by the National Research Council.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cartlidge, of Avon, are the parents of a daughter, Katherine, born at the Methodist Hospital, Monday.

North Salem: A Cub Scout organization was completed at a meeting held in the church, last Thursday night. Everett Davidson was made Cub Master and will be assisted by Richard Trotter and Charles Kurtz.

John Jenner, a veteran of World War II,

is taking his printer’s apprenticeship to The Republican office, which has been accredited for Veterans training. Mr. Jenner has served in the Navy, is married, has one son, and lives in Danville.

A pure white filly was foaled May 8, out of Silver Babe, a palomino mare owned by Mrs. Enver Shaw and has been named Silver Beauty. _____ FIFTY YEARS AGO Issue of May 20, 1971 Dell Harrison Nunaly III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dell H. Nunaly, Jr., R.R. 3 Danville, has been accepted for admission to the U.S. Military Academy as West Point.

Avon high school’s 1971 graduating class will have 105 seniors.

The Hendricks County Health Department has given the Christ Festival Committee until tomorrow to file written verification of “certain precautionaly measures” before it will evaluate the facilities and general situation for the proposed Christ Festival, May 28-29-30 at Maplecroft Drive-In Theater, U.S. 40.

As of May 14, a total of $2,021.85 has been contributed to the Evelyn Miller Artificial Kidney Fund. Last week’s balance was $1,235.

Mrs. Huldah York, town clerk-treasurer, administered the oah of office to Earnest Davis as new town marshal, Saturday morning.

Terry Cupp, Danville Community High School senior, won the coveted Robert D. Leedy Sports Award last Wednesday night, at the All-Sports Banquet, sponsored by the Danville Booster Club.

Miss Linda Ratliff, R.R. 1, Lizton, was among 78 co-eds initiated into Gold Peppers, activities society for upper-class women at Purdue University.

Dr. William Hudnut III, senior minister of the Second Presbyterian Church at 7700 North Meridian St., Indianapolis, will deliver the Danville Community High School commencement address. _____ TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Issue of May 16, 1996 A total of 1,093 seniors will receive their diplomas from the seven high schools in Hendricks County in the Classes of 1996.

The Hendricks County Heritage Alliance will kick off National Historic Preservation Week with a guided tour of the Historic Court House Square District in Danville.

Superintendent John McKinney of the Danville Community School Corporation announced at the May School Board meeting that Richard Snodgrass will be the varsity basketball coach for the coming season.

The Hendricks County Singles Over 40 will meet on Friday, May 17, for a Spring Fling Picnic at Avon Park.

Marjorie Schulmeister has a unique collection of miniature doll houses at the Danville Public Library.

For the first time, two Danville Community Middle School students have placed in the top three statewide in the State Math Mania Finals. David Tripple placed third of all Grade 7 students and Aaron Pizarek tied for second in the state overall. ______

TEN YEARS AGO Issue of May 19, 2011 Sergeant Kevin L. Courdray, son of Gene and Jo Cordray of Coatesville, was awarded the Bronze Star for exceptional meritorious service during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

Lt. Governor Becky Skillman recognized outstanding contribution to the tourism industry during a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse. One of the recipients was Doris Marten, schoolmarm for the Pittsboro One-Room School House.

This week Danville’s landmark, the Dairy Queen, operates under new ownernship, Lee Kleiner, and manager Micah Brown.

The Danville Community School Corporation, next fall, will not only be giving only the teachers, but each student at Danville High School, an Apple iPad as part of the curriculum.

Tox-Away Days For 2021

Hendricks Recycling District will host five ToxAway Days in 2021.

All Household Hazardous Waste (chemicals, auto fluids, fluorescent bulbs, rechargeable batteries, pesticides, herbicides, etc.) is accepted from households free of charge. Fees are charged for the recycling of televisions, appliances and tires (over a certain number).

Only residents of Hendricks County are allowed to utilize the District’s ToxAway Day events.

Tox-Away Days are open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The 2021 Tox-Away dates and locations are: • Saturday, May 22, Hendricks County Fairgrounds, 1900 E. Main, Danville.

• Saturday, July 17, Hickory Elementary School, 907 Avon Ave., Avon.

On average, more than 90 percent of motorists can be found wearing their seat belts on any given day. Unfortunately, the small percentage of people who choose not to buckle up make up a disproportionate amount of the fatalities that occur every year on Indiana roads.

It’s a concern that more than 200 Indiana police agencies will be working to address this spring by participating in the national Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign.

Now until June 6, officers will be out in greater numbers seeking to educate motorists about the importance of wearing a seat belt.

The high-visibility patrols are paid for with funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).

“If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s that life is precious,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI Executive Director. “We expect more people will be venturing out and taking road trips this spring, and wearing a seat belt is still the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe on the road.”

Between 2015 and 2019, seat belts have saved more than 69,000 lives in the U.S., according to NHTSA. Despite knowing the benefits, people still refuse to buckle up, a choice that too often can end in tragedy.

Last year, more than 800 people were killed on Indiana roads, of which, 565 occurred in passenger vehicles. Sadly, 364 of those, or 6 out of 10, were not wearing seat belts.

Out of any age group, male drivers, particularly those between the ages of 15 and 34, were the most likely to be found not wearing a seat belt at the time of a crash.

Additionally, individuals not wearing seat belts were three times more likely to get injured in a crash when the driver was speeding and seven times more likely when the driver was impaired.

“There’s a common misconception that riding in the back seat or driving a large truck or SUV will keep you safe in a crash, which couldn’t be further from the truth,” said Robert Duckworth, ICJI Traffic Safety Division Director. “Buckling up is the best way to increase your survivability, regardless of what seat or vehicle you’re in.”

According to ICJI, officers will be writing citations and conducting high-visibility patrols during the day but especially at night, when unrestrained driving is at its peak (midnight to 4:00 a.m.). Under Indiana’s primary seat belt law, officers can stop and cite drivers and passengers just for failing to wear a seat belt.

Drivers can also be cited for each unbuckled passenger under the age of 16, and children under eight must be properly restrained in a federally approved child or booster seat.

Throughout the campaign, officers will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt enforcement, which means anyone caught not wearing one will receive a citation.

The North West Hendricks School Corporation (NWHSC) board of trustees have approved Wendy Natalie as the new principal of Pittsboro Elementary School.

Mrs. Natalie, who currently serves as an assistant principal for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, has also worked for Avon and Richland-Bean Blossom Schools. A graduate of Indiana University with a BS in Elementary Education and MS of Science in Language Education, Mrs. Natalie is pursuing her Ed.S in School Administration and Leadership.

NWHSC superintendent Dr. Scott Syverson said, “We are thrilled to have Mrs. Natalie join our administrative team. With her experience in high ability, special education, as well as instructional coaching, she brings a wealth of experience to her role as principal of Pittsboro Elementary School.” __________

Guilford Township Gives Back Through Donations to Plainfield Police and Fire

Guilford Township historically has made an effort to give back to its taxpayers through community events. But when activities like the Guilford Township/Hummel Park Community Easter Egg Hunt, Hummel Park Fourth of July Extravaganza, and A Hometown Holiday at Hummel Park were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, the township decided to divert those financial resources to other ways to give back.

Recently, Guilford Township Trustee Chuck Ellis, and the Guilford Township board, decided to donate funds to both the Plainfield Police Department and the Plainfield Fire Territory. Most of the Town of Plainfield is situated within Guilford Township.

Being in need of a new K-9, the township donated the cost to acquire a new dog for Plainfield Police Officer Chris Johnson. Johnson’s previous K-9 partner, Colt, passed away last year.

“We lost our K-9, Colt, to a fast-acting disease,” said Plainfield Police Chief Jared McKee. “We had no idea how we would replace him because it was very unexpected. From helping us purchase bikes and utility vehicles which help us patrol the parks and trails, to the purchase of our newest K-9. Their help directly aids in keeping the Town of Plainfield a safe place to live, work and visit.”

MICHAEL WOLFE

Michael Wolfe, EMS/ emergency preparedness coordinator for Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, was named runner-up in Columbia Southern University’s Inaugural Outstanding Emergency Medical Servies Professional of the Year.

Wolfe began working as an EMT in 1984 and became a paramedic in 1987. He has worked in the private sector, volunteer and career fire services. In 2016, he retired as division chief of EMS for the Plainfield, Indiana, Fire Territory after 18 years and began working for Hendricks Regional Health. Wolfe is also seeking a master’s in public administration to add to his bachelor’s degree in homeland security.

A leader in public safety education, CSU established the Outstanding EMS Professional Award to recognize students and graduates serving in the EMS field for their commitment to saving lives, professionalism and their accomplishments in the field during National EMS Week (May 16-22).

CSU also awards outstanding law enforcement, fire service and occupational safety and health professionals. __________

In addition to K-9 Ruger, the township also helped the fire territory by purchasing an inflatable fire safety education “bounce house” which helps children understand how to escape a fire in their own home.

Due to the pandemic, the department has not yet been able to utilize the inflatable safety house, said Plainfield Fire Territory Chief Brent Anderson.

“Once the weather changes and we have the opportunity to interact with the public more, we will be out showing it off,” said Anderson. “We intend to use it at safety fairs and educational events to show the community, especially children, how to be safe around their homes. We are really excited to have this new tool in our toolbox.”

Division Chief Wade Stevens and Fire Prevention Officer Wayne Long will utilize the inflatable the most, Anderson said, “while everyone within the fire territory will be tasked with public education while out at events.”

Anderson said previous budget constraints had not allowed for the purchase of the inflatable.

“The assistance from Trustee Ellis and his board is very much appreciated,” Anderson said. “We cannot wait to get back out there working with the public on fire safety. This new addition to our cache will really help us make up for lost time due to the pandemic.” _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Diabetes Support Group

Hendricks County Senior Services is now hosting their monthly Diabetes Support Group designed specifically for persons with Diabetes and those caring for someone with Diabetes.

The support group is sponsored by Hendricks Regional Health and is open to anyone who is affected by Diabetes. Masks are required and temperature checks will be done.

This month’s support group is Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. Speaker, Kristie Decker, RN Diabetes Educator from Hendricks Regional Hospital will lead a review of how to best prevent complications with Diabetes. The meetings are confidential, free of charge, and reservations are not required.

Transportation is available through Senior Services at 317-745-4303.

If you would like to eat lunch prior to the meeting, please call the Senior Center at least 24 hours in advance. Suggested donation is $3 for seniors 60 years old or older and their spouses.

New participants are always welcome and membership in the Senior Center is not required.

Hendricks Power, Endeavor Chart High-Speed Internet Connection Benchmark in County

Endeavor Communications and Hendricks Power Cooperative have successfully connected more than 2,000 households and businesses to high-speed fiber internet.

The joint venture is on its third of five expansion stages and is continuously seeing great success. The five-year plan will provide high-speed internet access to more than 5,000 homes and businesses across Hendricks, Putnam, and Montgomery Counties.

Cooperative members in the Tilden, Pittsboro, Maplewood, and Hazelwood areas now have access to new telecommunications services. Currently, Montclair is undergoing construction, and the Fillmore area will begin construction in July. Phase four begins in 2022 and will include Fillmore North, New Maysville North, and Cartersburg. In 2023, areas of North Salem and rural Ladoga will begin deployment.

Overall, the expansion has had great success and has been helpful for those amidst the pandemic, with more than fifty percent of eligible members enrolling in the program. “We are extremely pleased that our partnership with Endeavor Communications has given members accessibility to high-speed fiber internet,” stated Hendricks Power Cooperative CEO Greg Ternet, “We are specifically targeting areas that do not have any access to connectivity, so there truly couldn’t have been a better, or more necessary, time for this advancement in rural areas.”

Retired Teachers Host May Meeting

The Hendricks County Retired Teacher’s Association held their first meeting since Covid on May 10. Brad Born of Mayberry Café catered a delicious fried chicken dinner.

New member, Peggy Thompson, a 30 year-teacher for Brownsburg School Corporation, was welcomed. Recognition of several people was made. Nancy Singer won the State IRTA Award for Outstanding Website for 2020. Charlotte Martin was recognized for 600+ volunteer hours for last year---a pretty amazing feat considering that many places have been closed during the past year.

Jeff Thompson gave an encouraging legislative report informing the group that county schools have received a substantial amount of money resulting in increased teacher pay as well as other funding for various projects, received by schools.

An interesting program was given by John A Meeks II, the Executive Director of the United States War Dogs Association, Chapter 3, from Kokomo, IN. He was accompanied by his faithful friend, his dog, Sargeant First Class Brutusz—SFC Brutusz. This Chapter was established in 2000 as a non-profit organization made up of former and current US Military Working Dog Handlers and supporting members. This organization was started by Vietnam War dog handlers.

There were 4,234 dogs that went to Vietnam; only 204 returned to the US and the dogs are credited with saving 10,000 lives. The mission of this organization is to support and honor our nation’s war dogs and their handlers, Past, Present, and John Meeks II and SFC Brutusz ____________________________________________________ Future.

The last order of business was to install new officers for 2021-2023. They are: President, Linda Thoman; Vice President, Charlotte Martin; Secretary, Sandy Clemons; Treasurer, Linda Rollings.

Good Water The water supply to many homes in rural areas throughout the county comes from private wells. There are a few simple maintenance tasks those on private wells need to do to help insure a good supply of safe water.

First, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Health both recommend an annual water test. You should have the water tested for coliform bacteria, nitrates, nitrites, total dissolved solids, and pH levels. If your home still has lead pipes in the supply system, it should also be tested for lead. You can collect the water samples yourself and take them to a nearby lab, but they need to be collected in the proper bottles in the proper manner. I suggest visiting a lab for instruction and they typically will provide you with the proper bottles. Delta Water Management Group in Brownsburg and ESG Laboratories near the Indianapolis airport both provide excellent service.

Many of the harmful elements that appear in our water are odorless and tasteless and we are unaware of potential harmful levels. Pregnant women and young children are especially vulnerable to harm from some of these elements. Sometimes the residents of the home become immune to a bacteria’s harm and it is a guest or new homeowner that can feel the affect.

Second, protect the well head. The top of the well casing should extend at least a foot above ground level. This is to prevent surface water from being able to run down the inside of the casing and pollute the aquafer. The cap needs to completely cover the casing and be securely fastened.

Third, we never want anything harmful on the surface to work its way into our drinking water. Make sure surface water runs away from the well location and nothing dangerous is being dumped in the area.

Fourth, confirm good water flow and pressure at all the faucets. If a faucet has a screen, remove it and rinse off any debris that may have been caught. Make sure your shower heads have not clogged with minerals. Next check the pressure tank. Typically, there will be a pressure gauge you can check to confirm your pressure is between 40 to 60 psi. While you are next to pressure tank (typically blue steel), tap on the top half with something metal and see if it rings. The bottom half should be full of water with a rubber bladder separating the top half that has air inside. If it has a solid sound all the way up the tank, the bladder has split and will cause your pump to be overworked. Time to call the professional.

Lastly, check any filtration system you may have. Depending on the quality of the water coming from your well, you may have a single inline filter or a complex system of filters and purifiers to provide you with a quality glass of water. Most of these systems require periodic maintenance to continue functioning as designed. Know your system and follow the owner’s manual.

Dogs were bred to do so many amazing things! Over the years they have helped us hunt, guarded our flocks, herded our livestock, gave us medical alerts about ourselves, guided the blind, protected our homes, pulled us by sled, retrieved fishing nets for fishermen, and so much more!

Having a dog in the home has become more and more popular over the years. We love breeds that can do amazing work, but we bring them into our homes without a job to do. This is when you start to see hyperactivity, excessive barking, destructive behaviors, digging holes in the yard, stealing items, jumping fences, and more.

How can you mentally stimulate your dog if you cannot give them the job their breed was created to do? Training is an awesome way to get your dog’s brain working! If you are too busy to work in a training session that day maybe you should consider taking your dog to a daycare. Doggy Daycare can offer lots of new scents to smell and plenty of time to run around and socialize!

Another way you can mentally stimulate your dog is by making meal time a game! You can purchase puzzle toys that hide your dog’s meals. You can research puzzle toys that you can make yourself at home. Ditch the bowl and make your dog problem solve to earn their dinner! A Note From Bee In the past we could only communicate in person, by telephone or letter. We can still communicate in these ways. However add to that texting, e-mail, snap chatting, or skyping, zoom, etc. Young people can do all these things . My husband and I only know how to text and e-mail.

The other day I texted my 20-year-old grandson and asked him if he liked the smoothie I had made only for him. It was a small gesture to show I loved him. I had given it to his mother to give to him.

When he didn’t answer I texted him again and reprimanded him for not answering. This was not the first time he had not answered my text. He did finally answer and said he never reads texts. He also told his mother about me reprimanding him. She in turn gently reprimanded me and said he was using snap chat to communicate. She could not tell me how to communicate with him.

I think it is important that we keep in touch with grandchildren but primarily we have to initiate the communication. So what is the answer?

The Case Against Cannabis Use Written by Chase Cotten, Executive Director at The Willow Center “I got my peaches out in Georgia…I get my weed from California,” sings pop megastar Justin Bieber on his most recent hit song, playing on every radio station in the country.

Cannabis and its derivatives are known by many different names: “Marijuana”, “Weed”, “Hash”, “Ganja”, “Grass”, “Broccoli”, “Mary Jane / MJ”, “Wax”, “Dab”, “Shatter”, “Bud”…the list goes on. Whether it’s being preached about in the Senate by legalize-it-advocates, being sung about by Dave Matthews, or being chuckled about in the Cheech and Chong movies, the normalization of cannabis use and its unusually fervent culture of promoters is nothing new.

Since as far back as the 1920s, it has been a hot topic of conversation, celebration (for some), and debate. Both sides of the debate have surprisingly ample amounts of scientific research to support their views on the matter, which complicates the decision the reader must make on how to feel about it.

Often, the reader will hear positive messages from certain celebrities and/or media outlets about research that supports cannabis for medicinal use to treat anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Recently, folks involved in the “California Sober” movement have even begun advocating for cannabis as a replacement substance to use instead of “harder” substances such as opioids like pain pills and heroin.

The Willow Center cannot refute some of the research that supports cannabis use to temporarily treat anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. And of course, cannabis indeed has less severe immediate effects on a person than substances such as pain pills and heroin. However, many celebrities and/or media outlets are not sharing (nor are they paying any attention to) the entire other body of research that suggests cannabis use may do more harm to us than good.

To start with, the cannabis being grown, manufactured, and used today is approximately 8% more potent than its originator plants in the 1990s according to a research study in 2016 supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (Mahmoud A. ElSohly, Ph.D. et. Al.). Higher potency is based upon a higher-level of THC found in the product, the psychoactive ingredient of cannabis.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, 18-25 year-olds are the largest demographic currently using cannabis, many of them on a daily basis. Approximately 1 in 10 folks who start using cannabis regularly will become addicted to it, contrary to popular belief. The addictiveness increases to 1 in 6 individuals if use starts before the age of 18. Cannabis is typically smoked, however edibles and vaped THC are growing in popularity. ______________________________________________

Rate the Driver in Front of You How Many Stars? Any Comments?

Take your dad for a drive and ask him to provide tips on how to drive better and where to turn. Ask him to rate your driving. Dads love to do this.

Feedback is an effective way to improve something.

Want to make something better? Track it. Rate it. How many stars? This works for me but what about all those other cars?

Unfortunately, the general nature of driving makes this kind of feedback impossible. There’s no way to rate nearby “anonymous” drivers. Uber has a system. At the end of each trip, you are able to rate your driver from 1 to 5 stars.

Driving with your mother-in-law provides similar information.

Granted, the diagnostics port on many vehicles provides some interesting data including speed, unusual acceleration, and unusual braking. Newer vehicles provide this data (and much more) to their manufacturer about every three seconds. But still, this information is limited to your vehicle — not the car in front of you or the car behind you (or the car in front of the car behind you). How can we provide feedback to the cars around us?

In 2008, a website called Platewire.com was created to provide a means for rating nearby vehicles. According to their website, “PlateWire is a public repository and electronic forum of drivers by drivers. Using a drivers license plate, commuters can communicate their thoughts and feelings in regards to driving on today’s roadways.”

Although feedback ratings sounded like a good way to improve something, recording license plates and entering information on a website was too cumbersome.

It’s only a matter of time before there’s an iPhone app allowing instant tagging and vehicle rating. And a smart windshield would, of course, display this information for each vehicle. Threshold alerts could be programmed for “problem vehicles.” My advice? Get in the habit (now) of borrowing someone else’s vehicle whenever possible… ______________________________________________

A Squirrel About Town

By Archy I decided to enjoy a little of the nice early Saturday morning weather on the bench just outside The Republican office. That’s where I found Archy.

“Nice view from this side,” he started. “ I don’t get over here as often as I should. Traffic, you know.”

I sat down beside him.

“The morning light is flattering to the court house, don’t you think? Of course, moonlight brings out its romantic side.”

I had to agree. Traffic was sparse as we watched the vendors at the Farmers Market setting up their tents.

“Nice to have them on this side of the square,” the squirrel said. “After all, this is where the first market was in the 1840’s.” He summoned his ancestral memory.

“There was an open frame building called ‘Market House’ on the southeast corner of the court house yard. The court house bell would ring to let the people know the market was open.”

“We don’t hear bells much these days,” I said. “The bell that sounded for the court house clock sits on the ground instead of the roof. The Christian Church got rid of its bell when they build a church without a steeple. The Unitarian Universalists still ring their bell on Sunday, but they haven’t had services in the building since the start of the pandemic.”

“It’s a shame,” Archy said in agreement. “So many forgotten sounds. The blacksmiths pounding on their anvils.

“Bird language is difficult,” he said, holding back a giggle. “Like Mandarin, much depends on intonation. I can only manage a conversation in pidgin.”

Queen of the Climbers: The Clematis Vine

By Colletta Kosiba Hendricks County Master Gardener Every garden should have at least one clematis.

The vines bloom with lots flowers in different flower forms, colors and a wide range of heights.

Later, they have attractive fuzzy seed heads.

Use clematis to grow up pergola or arbors or fences or just trail over the ground. Choose from a 3-foot-long beauty to 20 ft long fall blooming autumn clematis! There are lots of choices. Flowering times can be late spring, summer or fall. Also, there are re-blooming types that flower both early and late in the season.

Clematis are long-lived; they don’t like to be moved.

The ideal location will have well drained soil that’s rich and loamy.

Plant the crown of plant 6 inches deep, spreading the long roots down, cover and water well.

I make sure clematis receive enough water all year; after all the plant is up in sun and wind. I give them some water solviable fertilizer for first 2 months, too.

It takes the plant the first year to get established, so has fewer blooms. I add a little lime to soil. Make sure you keep their feet cool-- mulch works.

Clematis come in a variey of colors, from rich burgundy to deep purple and light pink.

The Autumn Joy clematis has fragrant tiny white flowers and blooms in late summer and early fall. The plant produces a prolific amount of seeds and seedlings and can easily and quickly spread.

Clematis need to be pruned in spring to prevent them from becoming a tangled mass of stems.

Group #1 the early-flowering and evergreen clematises-- Group #2: early and mid-season large-flowering, double and semi-double clematis--Group #3: Late large-flowering, late flowering species, and viticella clematise. All require different types of purning.

Our Readers Write Dear Editor, I would like to present a point of contention abou the article on April 29, 2021 concerning “We Need to Do More...Thoughts and Prayers Are Not Enough,” I believe that prayer is vital; thoughts and feeling may not be helpful to “get things done.” But God tells us to pray. Philppians 4:6 “ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation prayer, petition, with Thanksgiving, present your requests ot God.” There any many plaes in the Bible that commands us to pray! But for someone to say, “Prayers arae not enough” is an insult to our Powerful, Awesome, Caring, Mericiful Gracious God. Yes, I agree more needs to be done for mental health. But, please, do not exempt prayer, especially May, the Month of Prayer in U.S.A. But now I know I know who re need to pray for in this national crisis. Maybe thankfulness has been forgotten in this nation.

Clematis vines can break very easily. Older stems look woody but will crack if they’re bent. Young stems appear to be supple but are brittle. Use care when you tie up new vines. Begin tying weekly as the new growth starts.

Exploring Hendricks County

Now that John and I have bikes, we’ve been riding the local trails. Having walked a couple of miles of the B&O Trail in Brownsburg, we were excited to check out the remaining four miles. While totally doable in one trip, it’s taken us three excursions, but we’ve finally completed the entire Hendricks County section of the B&O Trail.

Work on the B&O Trail began in late 1993 as a dream to connect Montezuma in Parke County with Indianapolis in Marion County passing through Putnam and Hendricks Counties along 65 miles of abandoned railroad bed. To date, only 6.25 miles of paved path have been completed. BOTA (B & O Trail Association) currently owns 19 miles and with recent grants plans to continue extending the trail.

For the first leg, John and I started at the parking lot at the intersection of SR 267 (also known as Avon Avenue and Green Street) and the B&O Trail in Brownsburg.

Heading east we rode the corridor lined by shrubs, trees, and wildflowers. We traveled through residential and industrial areas, crossing farm fields and a creek. Between mile markers 137 and 136, the B&O intersects the north leg of the Bicentennial Trail, circles a roundabout, ducks through tunnels under Northfield Drive and CR 300 North before intersecting the Bicentennial south branch. Our time was limited and it was a bit windy this day so we stopped at the junction of the B&O Trail and CR 900 East.

Turning around we returned to our vehicle.

Our second ride covered the western leg. We started at the gravel parking lot off of CR 500 East and headed east.

Bushes and trees shaded the path as we breezed by walkers and joggers. A quick stop at the CR 575 East crossing and we were off again. The trail traffic got a little heavier on this section as we met other cyclists and zigzagged around moms with strollers and dog walkers. We crossed the bridge over White Lick Creek and continued to the trailhead parking lot at SR 267. Turning around, we headed back west toward our vehicle. The paved path currently ends at the parking lot but the B&O Trail continues as a gravel and rock path. Walkers would have no problem continuing but on a bike, it was too bumpy for me! This day we met Hall Virgil of Brownsburg and Steve Moore, Danville, hard at work clearing downed trees from the undeveloped western section of the trail. It was Hall who suggested we check out the far eastern section of the B&O,

To see this final segment of the B&O, John and I parked on Northern Dancer Drive in the rear of Wynbrooke Addition off of East CR 200 North. A large sign marks the access point to the B&O Trail. Not sure which way to go, we turned right and headed east. Less than a mile later, we arrived at Raceway Road, the eastern terminus... for now. The recent announcement of NEXTLevel Trail Grant includes funding to extend the B&O eastward to Speedway in Marion County and eventually all the way to Indianapolis.

Turning around, we headed west. Passing our access point, stopping for vehicle traffic at CR 1000 East, and just after mile marker 135, we reached our destination. The tunnel under Ronald Reagan Expressway is truly worth the ride.

The Ronald Reagan underpass built by Hendricks County was a magnet for graffiti. The call went out to transform the tunnel into an art gallery. Interested mural artists were required to submit their designs for review and approval by a selection committee. The final artists included students from Kingsway Christian and Tri-West High Schools, an art teacher, two prisoners on an early release program, and a couple of professional artists. A grant was obtained to seal and protect the final product from further vandalism.

After admiring the murals, taking some pictures, and enjoying the park-like rest stop, we returned to Wynbrooke and our van.

The B&O Trail is open to walkers as well as cyclists.

Depending on your starting point, the walk is between two and 10 miles round trip. Don’t let the lack of wheels stop you from experiencing this amazing and inspiring artwork.

Before COVID 1 in 5 of us were in need of mental health help but now that number has risen to 1 in 4 after COVID. “COVID leveled the playing ground” April said.

“We all had a rough year and the stigma associated with APRIL BORDEAU reaching out for help has dropped,” she said.

The need for their services has skyrocketed over the last year. As April stated, “Your mental health is your health.”

In talking with April and checking out their website, the message Care to Change has for you is that there is hope, and they are ready to help you find it.

Hendricks County Senior Services provides transportation services to anyone, 60 or older, needing a ride within Hendricks County. Transportation is provided for daily necessities, like medical appointments, grocery shopping, legal, social service, financial business, nutrition sites, and other life-essential service destinations. This service is provided on a donation basis.

Appointments are made on a first come/first served basis for door-to-door transportation (including wheelchair transport, portable oxygen, attendants, and service animals) for destinations in Hendricks County.

Transportation is available five days a week during office hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Service is not available on holidays or when weather is inclement.

Skin Cancer May Not Look The Way You Expected

By Melissa Gibson The weather is getting warmer, we’re outside gardening, at the park and playing in the pool – a perfect time for a reminder to wear sunscreen and take care of your skin.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and dermatologists and skin cancer patients are warning communities across the country of the dangers sun exposure and tanning can do to our skin.

You may have heard the A, B, C, D and E’s of skin cancer detection. For years, doctors have pushed the reminder to look for asymmetry, border, color, diameter and evolution (change in shape or size) on moles and suspicious spots on your skin.

Dr. Lawrence Mark, Dermatologist for IU Health West says these days, he tries to stay away from the easy to remember word play because it limits what people see as suspicious.

Danville resident Andrea Snyder agrees.

As a skin cancer survivor four times over, Snyder said each time, the spot was not what experts used to describe as the black, changing, oddly shaped area.

“I had a spot on my shoulder that was pink and about the size of a pencil eraser,” Snyder said. “I’m a freckly person and didn’t think much of it. When it started scaling and was almost like a sore that wouldn’t heal, I finally got it checked out.”

What looked on the surface like a pencil eraser, ended up being a 4-5 inch scar after Snyder’s dermatologist surgically removed the skin cancer.

What Happens At the Dermatologist?

“I look you over from head to toe,” Mark said. “This can be uncomfortable for some people but what we’re looking for is what your skin type is like. How strange is this compared to other spots on your skin? Many times, I’m able to provide reassurance and that’s awesome. I can say the spot is benign.”

Other times, things aren’t so easy. Mark says a quick biopsy (with a little numbing medication) can tell the experts if the spot is something they should be concerned about.

Many skin cancers do not present with dark or unspecified borders. ____________________________________________________

“A good dermatologist can look you over and identify anything concerning in two minutes or less,” Mark said.

“People often deny their issues because they have fears about what the doctor is going to do to them. I’m not going to be shy if it’s something that might kill me. Many walk away saying, ‘That was it? Why did I fear this?’”

For Snyder, things weren’t so simple.

According to Mark, if a spot has been neglected, the process can be more intense if the cancer has had time to grow and spread.

“I didn’t realize he would want to take a biopsy immediately,” Snyder said. “I wanted to jump off the table and run out. I had basal cell [carcinoma] and it has a fingering system, like a willow tree. When I had mine removed, it was really like an intensive surgery. I knew I’d be awake but had no idea what I was in for. I could see everything, hear everything and smell everything.”

After several rounds of skin cancer diagnosis, Snyder has found some tricks that make the process easier. She was prescribed a Xanax to ease her anxiety, she chews gum so she can’t smell the procedure and wears headphones to drown out the sounds.

The surgery itself isn’t painful, but the procedure and recovery could cause discomfort.

What Causes Skin Cancer? `There are four different kinds of skin cancer and Mark says it’s a result of sun damage (tanning or day-to-day sun exposure) or genetic predisposition. `“My grandparents owned a farm in Florida and they would always wear long sleeves and a hat when they were working in the fields. They didn’t get too much sun exposure. Somehow that information has been lost over generations,” Mark said. `Snyder’s father has red hair and very fair skin. She was used to burning easily throughout childhood and teen years. `“I can burn through a shirt,” Snyder said. “I can put my arm out the window and it will burn. I used to go to the tanning bed before vacation and maybe a few times before prom in high school but never excessively.” `“My dermatologist said he can’t tell if this is from a tanning bed or from childhood. We also owned a boat when I was a kid and with sunscreen on, I’d still get burnt every time. But one or two of the spots have never seen the sun, so I assume it’s from the tanning bed,” she added.

She most likely has the genetic predisposition as well and has learned to spot something suspicious, even amid freckly and fair skin.

Prevention is Important “We want to be smart about sun exposure,” Mark said.

“Don’t hang out outside in the middle of the day. If you need to work outside, do it before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m.

If you are outside, wear a hat, long sleeves and of course, sunscreen.”

Mark said the best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually put on your skin.

Many people feel sunscreen is too greasy or it gives them a white sheen. Mark said an SPF 30 or higher should give your skin protection and if you have to pay more for the lighter, less greasy feel, it’s worth it.

“There are mineral based sunscreens and chemical based sunscreens. You want to find one with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because they actually reflect the light away from your skin. You can use spray on, cream, lotion; just be sure the one you’re using is something you’ll put on regularly throughout the day,” Mark said.

Snyder takes prevention to another level, given her experience.

“I wear sunscreen when I’m out. I don’t go out and rent a jet ski on vacation. I don’t sit outside at the ballgame in the sun for hours. I’m under the umbrella and if we’re going to charter a boat, we get one with a canopy over it. I’ve found at LandsEnd, they have fuller coverage swimsuits and I wear a suit that is like a shirt with UV protection,” Snyder said. “I just can’t expose myself like that and have learned there are certain things I can’t do or have to take special precautions.”

If your skin already has significant sun damage, Mark says it’s never to late to protect yourself.

“Some feel like it’s too late, but the skin has an amazing ability to begin healing itself. Many can still correct it if they take precautions,” he added.

The best advice from both Mark and Snyder is to get a spot checked out early and do not fall into past descriptions and ideas of what skin cancer looks like. Postponing and neglecting could lead to serious surgery or even death.

Talk to your dermatologist about any spots you question and be sure to stay safe this summer, using precautions when possible.

Early detection is important and saves patients and doctors from some of the procedures necessary to remove the cancer. ____________________________________________________

Brownsburg Fire Territory Unveils 63rd Safe Haven Baby Box in Nation

By Melissa Gibson The Brownsburg Fire Territory Station 131 recently celebrated the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box at the station, 55 E. Main Street.

Available to the public as of April 30, Safe Haven Baby Boxes are safe locations in which a caregiver can surrender an infant they are unable to care for.

Founder and CEO Monica Kelsey was on hand for the unveiling and thanked the fire department and town for their participation in the program.

“I’m proud to report, we have not had a dead, abandoned baby in our state since December of 2014. We’re the only organization in America today, saving babies in boxes in fire stations and hospitals and we’ve literally flipped the tide in the state of Indiana, where no babies are dying on our watch,” Kelsey said.

Since Nov. 2017, ten babies have been surrendered in the baby boxes across the state, nine of which were Hoosiers, according to Kelsey, and those nine infants have been adopted by their forever family.

It’s been at least a year in the making.

In the past few months, the fire department has trained for a situation surrounding the baby box and prepared for installation at their building.

EMS Division Chief Zach Bowers thanked the generous doners that made the baby box a reality: St. Malachy Catholic Church, St. Malachy Catholic Church Gabriel Project, St. Malachy Church Knights of the Columbus #12540 and Brownsburg Sertoma Club.

“This is a very valuable resource for mothers in criBrownsburg Fire Chaplain, Denis Roy prepares to bless the sis,” Bowers said. “I hope box and the community. we never see it used, but even if it’s used once and we’ve saved one baby, it’s well worth it.”

According to Indiana Safe Haven Law, an infant can be brought to a first responder site such as a police station, fire station or hospital and surrendered with no questions asked and no legal recourse. However, many mothers and caregivers are still weary of the stigma and fear of surrendering a child.

Kelsey, an abandoned infant herself, works to relieve the stigma and create these locations that allow the child to be surrendered without another person present. A mother or caregiver can open the box, place the infant inside a safe “box” or infant crib and a silent alarm alerts the department of activity at the box.

To date, there are 67 active baby boxes in the United States. Danville Fire Station 192 was the first in Hendricks County to install a box at 100 Twinbridges Road, with Brownsburg following shortly after. Since the Brownsburg installation, there have been an additional five boxes in just the past few weeks, including Putnam County EMS and Martinsville Fire Department.

Be Well Crisis Hotline

Indiana Family and Social Services Administration offers the Be Well Crisis Helpline, a confidential resource available through Indiana 211 that allows Hoosiers to call and speak with a trained counselor 24/7.

The free Helpline was established by FSSA’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction in response to elevated levels of stress and anxiety Hoosiers are experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Be Well Crisis Helpline is funded by a Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In Indiana the program becomes part of the state’s new Be Well Indiana initiative. Additional information about the mental health resources available to Hoosiers is available at BeWellIndiana.org. __________

Chapman Custom Baths Moves to New Location

Jon Chapman’s successful bath fixtures store occupies a new location that is more easily seen from nearby Main Street in Brownsburg. Using a loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 504 program, Chapman Custom Baths bought land and an existing building a few blocks from its original store. The new location is bigger, and is more visible than the original store which was hidden behind a commercial shop. State Bank and Indiana Statewide Certified Development Corporation provided the SBA 504 loan to Chapman.

Chapman says, “Our store is successful, but we needed to be seen, and we needed more space. The SBA 504 loan really made the deal for us. We need the longer repayment time and smaller down payment. We are very pleased.”

Kevin Hall of State Bank says, “This type of project is the reason for the SBA 504 loan program. A little financing can help a local business to reach its great potential.”

Indiana Statewide CDC works with local Indiana lenders to issue SBA 504 loans to help owners of expanding or startup small businesses buy real estate, buildings and equipment. LINK Hendricks County provides public transit service to persons of any age (including wheelchair transport, portable oxygen, attendants, and service animals) needing a ride within Hendricks County. Those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. If a child falls under the Indiana Child Seat Law a state approved car seat must be provided.

LINK service is scheduled on a first come, first served basis, so riders are encouraged to call as soon as possible, up to three months in advance. Curb to curb transportation is available Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Service is not available on holidays or when inclement weather prohibits safe boarding and/or travel.

This is a fee-based service, $6 round trip within a town; $8 round trip within the county. The service is scheduled by calling LINK at 317-718-4474 and requesting LINK transportation.

Defining Danville: A New Comprehensive Plan North Elementary Students

“There’s no time like the present, the saying goes.

Another proverb adds, “A thousand unforeseen circumstances may interrupt you at a future time.”

Those attending at an open house last Wednesday found themselves in that hazy world between the present and the future as they examined a presentation of the Town of Danville’s Comprehensive Plan on display in the Bosstick Gymnasium. Panels highlighting the areas being included in the study were lined up on the basketball court. Visitors were given stickers to place on the panels if they agree or disagree with the contents. They also were given pads of sticky notes for short written comments.

Vision Statement: Danville is a community inspired by its hometown charm and prepared to embrace strategic investmens that cultivate sustainable growth and development. Priorities listed included managing growth, preserving the character and mix of local businesses, and using “livable neighborhoods, premier parks, walkable districts, and outstanding event programming” to strengthen quality of live. Comments included “Define livable neighborhoods,” and “Boom town is not quality of life.”

Land Use: Priorities were maintaining the court house ssquare as the central core by prioritizing local businesses within the downtown. Maintain US 36/Main St. as commercial corridor with mix of local and chain businesses.

Reserve land for: future parks; space for future roadway and utility infrastructure. One comment was “Seems smarter to build to the east of town.”

Community Character - Downtown: Support infill and redevelpment of existing urban areas - maintain compact develpment pattern with mixed uses and activities; maintain small scale buildings (1-3 stories) that house local businesses; encourage specialty retail shops downtown; emphasize local businesses downtown & mix of local/ chains outside downtown. Prioritize pedestrian environment downtown - incorporate a multi-use path on Main street; Use plantngs, street furniture, decorative paving and ornamental lighting to support downtown character; Encourage businesses to create outdoor dining along sidewalk. Comment: “So excited for more walk-ablilty” and “We love our downtown! I’m excited to see the thoughtfulness in our leadership is using in plans for future improvement. This place is special”

Placemaking: Mission to expand activities, events and programming offered in Danville. Support growth and enhancement of year-round events. Partner with Visit Hendricks County to advertise & promote. Coordinate events across public and private sector. Offer diversity of programs - youth, family, seniors. Take community survey on types of programs. Establish community brand that celebrates Town’s heritage and identity - implement 2010 wayfinding study; Identify locations for gateway signage.

Comments: “Consider signs that point to specific businesses on the square” and “Strongly agree with partnering with VHC - they do excellent work.”

Vehicular Transportation: This panel attraced the most attention. Goals are: Develop east-west corridors to alleviate Main St traffic. Extend CR 100 N from Money Lane to SR 39. Establish parallel routes along Broadway and/or Lincoln. Construct missing segments along 200N to connect with Marion County.

Develop unofficial bypass to improve flow: a. use CR 300E and CR 200 S to connect US 36 & SR 39 b. evaluate route for SR 39 bypass along east side. c. investigate truck bypass on CR 75W as short term option 3. investigate turning downtown back to 2-way (so could traffic signal at E. Main& Tennessee could be eliminated.

Coments: “Traffic thru town is nothing compared to almost any other town” and “30 years too late.”

Pedestrian Infrastructure: Implement Pedestrian Pathways & Trails Plan of 2020 - evaluate best way to provide a major east-west trail on Main Steet. Require developers to construct shared-use trails on adjacent roadways & Town projects to follow same as outside develpments.

Begin coordinatin with INDOT on longterm plan for trail & pedestrican connecivity along Main St/ US36, by-pass, trials and Safe Routes to School. Provide ADA compliant sidewalks and trails. Develop network of safe inclusive pedestiral pathways - Complete SRTS master plan & encourage students to walk & Bike to school - provid ADA compliant sidewalks & trails

Parks, Recreation & Natural Areas: With the mission to promote a safe and active lifestyle through recreation opportunities, a goal is to implement the 5-year plan to provide park space within half-mile walking distance of each neighborhoos and improve the trail network. Establish environmental polices to limit development in floodway and sensitive areas. Provide incentives for developments to preserve or dedicate natural areas for park, trails and open space. One note commented: “I like the idea of Danville striving to preserve wildelife areas/planting native grasses to help maintain water retention. New development & asphalt can lead to diminishing habitat. I’d love to see the town approach new develpment differently” Community Characer - Neighborhoods: Create diverse housing opportunities in north and northwest. Discourage residential developments with only one housing type. Ensure develpment proposals contribute to Danville’s overall community character - new develpments to provide non-motorized links to existing & planned trails; develop connects to existing sub streets; maintain grid pattern; require right-of-way dedication for future trails/roadways. Comment: “Love the plans for new housing but worry about too many apartments. Is there a cap or monitoring of this?” and “Concerned that too many apartments would bring too many people without financial benefits to town”

Economic Development: - Promote quality of place to support workforce attraction & new business. Promote inventory of available development ready sites. Use proximity of airport by attracting complimentary development.

Promote “Buy Local” campaign. Support comprehensive ed & lifelong learning opportinities, collaboration among educational institutions, employers, workforce devopent partners to create training advancement.

Trees. We often take them for granted, but on April 30, students at Danville North Elementary learned how important they are to our environment and how they can serve as a memorial to someone special. Best of all, thanks to the Danville Tree Advisory Committee, third grade students at North Elementary received free saplings to take home and plant with their families. ______________________________________________

Mrs. Barber, North Elementary Librarian, read “The Tree Lady: The True Story of How One Tree-Loving Woman Changed a City Forever.” to all the third grade students. The book tells the story of activist Kate Sessions, who helped San Diego grow from a dry desert town into a lush, leafy city known for its gorgeous parks and gardens. Mrs. Barber discussed Arbor Day and all the useful benefits of trees.

She also told the students about the Danville Tree Advisory Committee and their goal to see that the community has an abundance of healthy trees to help the environment and add to the beauty of our town.

Several students wanted to know how old you must be to be on the Committee, in hopes of being a member someday! ______________________________________________

DDP volunteers joined the family from Neier Farms (whose flowers will be blooming through the season) to put the crops in.

New top soil was added (see DDP Executive Director Anne Johansson at right) and a variety of red and white flowers and greenery were added. Now residents and visitors can enjoy the added beauty as they shop and attend events.

1st Annual Warrior Football Golf Outing Planned

In 2020 our Warriors took on the challenge of playing during an unprecedented time. The Warriors not only stepped up but put it through the uprights.

Coach Comer is set to lead our program in 2021 and will honor the rich tradition of Warrior football. Comer continues to provide important lessons of family, discipline, and character that only High School Football can provide.

The First Annual Danville Warrior Football Golf Outing will take place Friday, June 18, with a box lunch at noon, and shotgun start at 1 p.m. Fundraising goals include video review equipment to improve player development, locker room equipment and improvemtns, goal boards, and Hall of Fame pictures.

Reeling Through the Past: History of the Royal Theater “The Birth of a Nation” was not only the first epic film of the silent film era, but a controversy that continues to today. The story of the Civil War and the Reconstruction period that followed helped to spread the myth of the South’s “Lost Cause” and triggered a re-birth of the Ku Klux Klan across America from the 1910’s into the 1920’s.

The three-hour movie was first issued in 1915 under the title, “The Clansman” and was based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Dixon, Jr. and was the first movie to be shown at the White House. While previous movies were two or three reels; this was 12 reels. It featured innovations still used in today’s films: the close-up; zooming in; and crosscutting scenes.

The Royal Theater featured a re-release of the movie in 1923. An advertisement in The Republican proclaimed “Nothing Ever Like It Before” and that “18,000 people, 3,000 horses appear in this great All-American Picture.”

A press release promised “This realistic picture of history in the making is of untold value to both old and young.

Besides the historical worth of this great spectacle, the constant emotional throb of the romantic story thrills the hearts of all.”

Before the age of the Internet, theaters like The Royal were a means to connect people throughout the nation with a common experience - watching a movie.

The Community Clothes Closet at Northview Christian Church, 623 N St. Rd. 29, Danville, announces new and extended hours. We are open the 1st and 3rd Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as the 3rd Thursday of each month, 5 to 7 p.m.

Our community has generously donated a lot of gently-used clothing - including newborn, 3-4X adult - and we want to share with those in need. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Improve Your Mood Support Group at Senior Center

Improve Your Mood Support Group meetings every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Hendricks County Senior Center. Members have been gathering to learn about mindfulness and other coping techniques for symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The Improve Your Mood Support Group is offered at no cost to anyone 25 years of age or older wishing to participate. No reservations are required to attend.

The group is facilitated by Sharon Dora Samsell, Coordinator of Bereavement and Community Support Groups for Hendricks Regional Health.

“The group focuses on sharing situations and processing emotions, then devoting time to a specific mood enhancement activity or skill that they can put into practice when away from their group” states Sharon.

Transportation is available through Senior Services at 317-718-4474. If you would like to join us for lunch before the meeting, please call the Senior Center at least 24 hours in advance. Suggested donation is $3 for seniors 60 years old or older and their spouses.

The senior center is filled with information on healthcare and other businesses who partner with us to provide services to seniors. Staff is available for further questions and information.

Tax Preparation - Tax preparation is available in cooperation with AARP. Trained tax preparers are available during tax season to help with basic, non business tax returns. Appointments are scheduled at the end of January and are offered at sites in within Hendricks County and at Hendricks County Senior Services.

Loan Medical Equipment

Hendricks County Senior Services maintains a limited supply of medical equipment available for loan for residents of Hendricks County as part of the Danville Rotary Club Foundations, Inc’s Durable Medical Equipment Loan program.

Equipment is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no charge for borrowing the equipment.

Donations are graciously accepted to help offset the cost of maintaining the equipment. We offer walkers, wheelchairs, rollators, and canes. Call the Senior Center for more information at 317-745-4303

This declaratory resolution finds that a site owned by Chicago Industrial Investments, a development company, qualifies for and is found to be an Economic Revitalization Area because it is an area within the Town of Avon which has become undesirable for, or impossible of, normal development and occupancy because of a lack of development, cessation of growth, deterioration of improvements or character of occupancy, age, obsolescence, standard building, or other factors which have impaired values or prevent a normal development of property or use of property. Chicago Industrial Investments desires to grow business in the Town of Avon by re-utilizing property and constructing a speculative industrial building.

The Avon Town Council will receive and hear all remonstrances and objections from interested person at its regularly scheduled Town Council meeting at 7 o’clock p.m. on May 27, 2021. On August 6, 2020, the Town of Coatesville received a grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs from their State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Stormwater Improvements Program. Section 2: Sources of Funding.

(A) The Town shall only appropriate and use funds to cover costs incurred by the Town

To respond to the public health emergency with respect to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) or its negative economic impacts, including assistance to households, small businesses and non-profits, or aid to impacted industries such as tourism, travel and hospitality;

2. To respond to workers performing essential work during the COVID 19 public health emergency by providing premium pay to eligible workers of the Town that are performing such essential work, or by providing grants to eligible employers that have eligible workers who perform essential work; 3. For the provision of government services to the extent of the reduction in revenue of the Town due to the COVID-19 pub! ic health emergency relative to revenues collected in the most recent fiscal year of the Town prior to the emergency that being 2019; or

4. To make necessary investments in water, sewer or broadband infrastructure.

(B) The Town Council shall adopt a plan which provides details for the use of such funds.

Section 4: Amendments.

This Ordinance may be amended from time to time if additional guidance isreceived from any federal or state agency.

Section 5. The ARP Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund shall exist until terminated

by Ordinance of the Town Council. Monies from this fund may not be transferred to another fund of the town.

Section 6. Effective date.

This Ordinance shall take effect immediately upon passage by a majority of the Town Council Members.

DONNA EILEENE BEAVER, 58, of Plainfield, passed away May 12, 2021.

She was born on May 19, 1962 in Indianapolis to Donald E. and Judy A. (Greer) Beaver. Donna was a member of Plainfield Christian Church.

She loved to spend time with her children and also watching NASCAR. Survivors include her son, Donald E. Beaver of Indianapolis; daughter, Eileene C. Beaver of Plainfield; her parents of Plainfield; and sisters, Judith Scotten, Brenda Fahr and Lisa Taylor.

Services were Tuesday, May 18, in Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield, followed by graveside services in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood. She was born in Belleville, Illinois on December 15, 1950 to Ardell and Dorothy Fries. She was a graduate of Mascoutah High School, Mascoutah, Illinois, and began her working career at the First National Bank of Mascoutah.

At 18 years old, she was in a car accident. Her injuries changed everything, but she never lost hope that she would walk again. Following her accident and multiple times throughout her life, Sandy’s doctors believed she would die. For nearly 52 years, Sandy pulled through, living her life to the fullest. For over 40 years she was a resident of New Hope of Indiana, Indianapolis. During these years she achieved a level of independence that no one could have imagined.

She is survived by two sisters: Judy (Willard) Nelson of Indiana and Nancy (Chris) Mourse of Maryland; and a brother: Michael (Linda) Fries of Illinois; four nephews: Russell Guthery, Zachary Mouzakitis, Reid Mourse, Eric Fries; and a niece: Sarah Fries.

Her parents, Ardell and Dorothy, and a niece, Toshie Sloan, preceded her in death.

Sandy’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to her many caregivers and friends over the years at New Hope, including but not limited to: Connie Weaver, Joice Mugomeza, Nikki Owens, Darlene Webster, Anthony Rogers, and Megan Thompson.

ALYSSA DANIELLE COUCH, age 27, of Coatesville, passed away May 13, 2021.

She was born August 26, 1993 in Danville. Alyssa was a homemaker. She loved her kids and also loved taking them to the park and playing Nerf guns with her kids.

Survivors include her children, Jace Helmuth, Coatesville, and Lukas Couch, Coatesville; mother, Deborah (Johnson) Couch, Coatesville; father Robert Couch, Kentucky; siblings, Angela Salyers and husband Ryan, Bloomington, Adrian Couch, Brazil, Alexxis Couch, Coatesville, and Auston Robert Couch, Coatesville; grandmother, Linda McCloud, Clayton; grandfathers, Melvin Couch, Van Cleve, Ky., and Zane Johnson, Montezuma; father of Lukas, Mark Henderson, and several cousins.

Her grandmother. Willa Couch, and father of Jace, Joseph Helmuth, preceded her in death.

Visitation took place Wednesday, May 19. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM at the Clayton Cemetery. ________________________ JAMES “ED” BRADLEY, 59, of Pueblo, Colo., formerly of Indianapolis, passed away May 5, 2021.

He was born November 3, 1961 in Indianapolis. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1980. He worked for Glas-Craft in Indianapolis in quality control for 28 years retiring in 2010.

He was a past member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Three years ago he moved to Pueblo, Colo. and enjoyed a healthier lifestyle of hiking, camping and zip-lining. Unfortunately, his life was cut short due to a genetic heart defect.

He leaves behind a daughter, Charlynn N. Bradley; a son, James Brandon Bradley; his mother, Billie (Brawner) Bradley; a grandson, Aiden Bradley; three brothers, Byron (Rhonda), Keith (Angela) and Jeff (Jennifer) Bradley.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hollis Bradley and a brother, Todd Bradley.

Private funeral services took place in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.

Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield. ________________________ ALBERTA L. BROYLES, 90, of Pittsboro, peacefully passed away on May 17, 2021.

Alberta was born on May 31, 1930 in Boone County, Indiana to Oakley and Geraldine (Edrington) Sparks. After graduating from high school, she married Harold W. Broyles on July 17, 1949, a loving union that would last until his passing in 2010.

Alberta was a wonderful homemaker and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Pittsboro Methodist Church, enjoyed teaching Sunday School, and baked award-winning angel food cake.

In addition to her parents and husband, Alberta is preceded in death by her son, Robert L. Broyles; her sister, Mary Frye; and her brothers, Jack N. Sparks and Teddy Leon Sparks.

Alberta is survived by her children, James L. Broyles, Dean L. Broyles, and Virginia L. Winegar; her eight grandchildren, her 16 great-grandchildren; and her four great-great-grandchildren.

Friends and family will gather on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Eric M.D. Bell Funeral Home, Pittsboro, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. Following the service, Alberta will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in K of P Cemetery in Lizton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pittsboro United Methodist Church.

NELLIE J. GOLDSBY, 87, of Plainfield, passed away May 13, 2021.

She was born on April 23, 1934 in Indianapolis, to the late Benton Franklin “Frank” and Ina Estelle (Walters) Brown. She married Donald Albert Goldsby on December 24, 1952 in Indianapolis.

Nellie graduated from Manual High School and then attended IVY Tech.

She was a licensed practical nurse and worked many years at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening and reading.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Donald; son, Dale (Lori) Goldsby of Indianapolis; daughter, Donna (Jim) Adams of Avon; brother, Jerry W. (Kay) Brown of Thorntown; and grandchildren, Dr. Kaitlin Goldsby-Bezek (Alex) of Charlotte, N. C., Lindsey Adams of Los Angeles, CA., and Melissa Adams Every (Michael) of the United Kingdom.

Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield, is handling the arrangements. Private services will be held with burial to follow in Clayton Cemetery. She was born on October 22, 1958 in Indianapolis to the late William Goen and Rebecca DeJesus. Raylee graduated from Plainfield High School in 1977.

She was in customer service with various jobs over the years, retiring in 2011.

In her free time Raylee enjoyed sitting in her pool. She loved spending time with her family as much as she could.

Raylee was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Plainfield.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dustin See; sisters, Tyann Day and Debbie Goen.

Survivors include her husband, Garry See; son, Jeremy (Ashley) See; daughter, Tyla (Chris) Kent; sister, Sheila (Dan) Speth; 4 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery.

She was a 1962 graduate of Danville (Indiana) High School. She started her career at Allison Gas Turbine in 1983 and worked as an Executive Assistant to the CEO. She finished her career in the Finance Center at Rolls Royce.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Bush; her parents, Harry and Benita Record; and her sisters, Marjorie, Ruth and Roberta.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Teresa (Gerald) George; grandchildren, Kelly (Ted) Allen, Lori (Brad) McNeely, Chris (Amber) George; great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Peyton, Dalynn, Bryce, Ella, Colton and Blake; great-great grandchildren, Hadley and Lucy; and several nieces.

Services were Monday, May 10, at Conkle Funeral Home Avon. Entombment was in West Ridge Park Cemetery.

He was a Vintage Card Dealer and Co-Owner of the Indy Connection Sports. Steven was a proud Veteran of the US Army. He was a member of the National Sports Cards Shows and attended Faith Baptist Church Avon.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Christensen Johnson; step-sons, Randy (Teresa) Vaughn, Jeff (Brenda) Vaughn and Quentin (Debbie) Vaughn; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and sister, Reta Barnes of Kokomo.

Geoff is survived by his daughters, Sage Klinger and Celeste Klinger; grandchild, Beckham McBryde; parents, J. Philip and Nancy White Klinger; brother, Kevin Klinger (Susan); wife, Gena Miller, step-daughters, Jessica Miller and Jenna Miller.

Geoff was a Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication and Theatre, in addition to being the Director of Forensics and has overseen the DePauw debate program since his arrival at DePauw in 2003; he also taught at St. John’s University, Hanover College, and the University of Utah after receiving his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Iowa in 1998. He was an award-winning debater at DePauw as a student, and as a professor his teaching included public communication and controversy, rhetorical theory and criticism, and the history of public discourse. His extensive expertise included rhetoric and public address. Geoff had a profound impact on generations of DePauw students, many of whom, inspired by his teaching and mentorship, went on to enjoy success in a wide variety of careers.

She was born in Indianapolis on October 18, 1948 to the late Mick Moore and Joan Fox. Mary Anne worked for Aero Industries in sales for 35 years. She enjoyed shopping and traveling in her free time. Mary Anne loved being married to Santa Claus, as she made a fantastic Mrs. Claus as well.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, David and Michael Moore.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Survivors include her husband, of 52 years, Ronald Abbott; son, Bryce (Mallorey) Abbott; daughter, Crystal Abbott; brother, Glenn Fox; grandchild, Izabel Abbott. ________________________

CHARLES E. “CHUCK” BOWLING, 90, Brownsburg, passed away on May 6, 2021. Born July 18, 1930 in Harrison County, Ind., he was the son of Daniel James and Georgia Naomi (Ferree) Bowling who preceded him.

Chuck graduated from New Middletown High School in 1948 and spent four years in the U.S. Navy 1948-1952. After discharge, Chuck took advantage of the GI Bill of Rights and went to Purdue University graduating in 1956 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

While at Purdue he met his future bride, Mary Louise Foerster. They were married in September 1956 and had two daughters Debbie and Nancy. Mary died in 1989 from cancer.

Chuck accepted an engineering position at the Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors Corporation. He worked in Preliminary Design and on solid propellant rocket motor cases for the Minuteman Missiles. He also worked in the Materials Laboratories where he authorized three patents on high temperature transpiration cooling turbine blades and vanes. His last several years were spent in the Power and Utilities area as the Powerhouse Mechanical Engineer. He retired in 1992 after 36 years of service.

Chuck’s many interests in life included family taking vacations, home projects and celebrating all the holidays. He documented the events with lots of pictures and was called “Kenny Kodak” by the family. He was also interested in and active Speedway Town operations. He served on the Recreation Board, Transportation Board, the Police Commission and 15 years on the Speedway Town Council. He also ran the Speedway Wastewater Treatment Plant for a year.

Chuck was always a faithful member of his Lutheran Church and served in several leadership positions. He was a member of the Speedway Lions Club for several years and was a member of the American Legion Post 331 in Brownsburg, The Korean War Veterans Association, and the Tin Can Sailors Association. In recent years he and Joyce have been volunteering at his church’s Food Pantry.

In 1992 he married Joyce Zeunik, the result of two of their good friends bringing them together. They have enjoyed many years of cruises, traveling, playing golf and spending time with their two families.

Chuck and Joyce became active in the USS Kidd Association/ Desron 48 which was made up of Veterans from nine destroyers which served together during WWII and then the Korean War. Still a country boy at heart, Chuck grew a small garden each year.

He was especially fond of growing tomatoes and at one time was called the “tomato man” of the neighborhood.

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Wayne) Johnson and Nancy Watson as well as a grandson, Clark Christian Johnson; stepsons Michael (Debbie) Zeunik of Gainesville, Fla.and Daniel Zeunik of Orlando, Fla. as well as step-grandchildren Shaun, Danielle, Austin and Branden Zeunik; and sisters Kathy Pauline of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Marilyn (Larry) Leffler of Floyds Knobs, Ind.; nieces Michelle (Bill) Kusman and nephew Denny (Patty) Leffler.

Services were Friday, May 14 at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, Avon. Entombment followed at West Ridge Park Cemetery.
