The Republican Volume 140, Number 12

School Reports How well are Hendricks County schools doing in their job of educating students? In which areas do they excel, and where could they use some improvement? This issue of The Republican contains the Annual Performance Reports for all Hendricks County Public Schools, which uses numbers to give a snapshot of each district and individual schools. Each year, the Indiana Department of Education requires these “report cards” from all schools to inform the public on their progress. Each report includes the school corporation statitistics, including enrollment, expenditures, teacher salary range, and other information. Sections are also included for the individual schools within the district, including average class size, test score averages, graduation and attendance rates, along with number of students suspened and expelled. All results are shown for the past three school years, as well as the same statistics for the state averages, for comparison. Parents and taxpayers can use these “report cards” to see where their schools are doing well, as well as where they could do better. To provide an even clearer picture of local schools, the Indiana Department of Education makes additional detailed information available year round online at www. doe.in.gov/schooldata. ______________________________________________

Avon Alumni Cancel Banquet

The Avon Alumni Association has decided that it will be in the best interest of its precious and loyal Alumni to postpone this year’s Alumni Banquet due to the coronavirus and the potential health concerns it creates. Plans are to schedule our next banquet for the last Saturday in April of 2022 which will be on the 30th. As a result of this second rescheduling, there will be three 50-year reunion classes honored at that time. Special recognition will be given to members of classes 1970, 1971 and 1972! Contact has been made with Class of 1970 member, Robert ‘Bobby’ Nibbs who was previously scheduled to be Alumnus of the Year and special guest speaker for the 2020 banquet. Bobby has graciously agreed to participate as honored speaker for 2022, in spite of this unfortunate delay. __________

Region Champs

The Indiana Lyons won their first and second American Basketball Association (ABA) playoff games in franchise history over the weekend and emerged as the ABA North Central Region Champions. The Lyons advance to the league’s Final Eight tournament in St. Louis in mid-April. After finishing with a 14-4 record in the regular season and a #12 ranking in the ABA out of more than 75 teams, the Lyons earned a first-round bye in the regional tournament and faced the #22-ranked Ohio Bruins out of Columbus, Ohio on Saturday in Noblesville. Trailing for most of the game, the Lyons mounted a furious comeback in the final two minutes of regulation, forced overtime, and then won 107-102 in the extra period. The victory was the first postseason triumph for the Lyons in franchise history. The team has qualified for the ABA playoffs in all three years of its existence but lost its first playoff game after the 2018-19 season. The 2019-20 ABA playoffs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the championship game, the Lyons battled the Midwest Guardians out of Westfield, Indiana who were ranked #14 in the ABA. The two teams split their regular season matchups and developed a spirited rivalry along the way.

Remember High Bridge?

Up until somewhere in the mid-1970’s, there was a bridge located south of New Winchester and north of Coatesville, on State Road 75. It was considerable distance above the railroad, thus the nickname. If you had ever made the crossing over High Bridge, your knuckles are probably turning white as you read this. Midway over the bridge, which was barely one-vehicle wide, came a sharp turn that didn’t allow traffic from either direction to realize they had company until they met. Then one of them had to inch backwards to allow the other to complete the crossing. We recently had a call from a form resident who remembers High Bridge from his childhood and is looking for information and, hopefully, photos of the bridge. If any of our readers remember or have information on High Bridge, please send it to betty@ TheRepublicanNewspaper.com, send it to P.O. Box 149, Danville, IN 46122 or call us at 317745-2777. ___________

In a back-and-forth title game, the Lyons finally took control late in the fourth quarter, fended off a late surge by the Guardians, and won the regional championship, 121-114. ABA All-Star Nominee Gerald “Cam” Campbell led the Lyons with 45 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in the game, while Brownsburg High School graduate and ABA All-Star Nominee Kendric Lee poured in 19 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and two steals. Danville Community High School graduate Dillon Ware, a recent addition to the team, added 11 points, 7 rebounds, and two assists. “We focused on perseverance this weekend,” said Lyons head coach Tyrone Brown of Avon, who also owns the team along with his wife, Deborah. “We faced all sorts of adversity this season and this weekend, and we persevered.” As one of only eight teams remaining in the ABA playoffs, the Lyons will head to St. Louis for the Final Eight tournament April 15-18. The team will host a community celebration of their regional championship on Saturday, March 27, at 4 p.m. at Danville Town Hall, 49 N. Wayne Street. Look for more details to be posted later this week on IndianaLyons.com and on the team’s Facebook page.
