Musical Chairs
Looking for some competative fun for a good cause? Hendricks County Senior Services is having a Musical Chair Event on Thursday, April 21st at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds, starting at 6 p.m. HCSS is trying a unique fundraiser in 2022 and it is sure to be fun for participants and spectators alike. The thought originated as a thank you party for the donors that helped HCSS raise funds to update the old metal chairs to the awesome chairs they have now. After postponing the event due to the pandemic, a donor suggested having Hendricks Power Coopa thank you and fundraiser erative, Hendricks County all in one! Photos: Marieta Haiducu Justine Vandenberg carefully decorates a birthday card for a Ukrainian refugee.
By: Olivia O’Neal Marieta Haiducu, French language teacher at Danville Community High School and Danville Middle School, has found a way to help young Ukrainian refugees victim to Russia’s February 24th invasion. Driving to school the morning after the invasion, Haiducu was listening to the story of an infant girl forced to flee before her very first birthday, which would be celebrated away from home amidst the crisis. The thought of many children, some the age of her own son and students, being “brutally thrown into an unknown world… a nightmare,” was her motivation. Haiducu and her French students made birthday cards for displaced Ukrainians that have fled to the nearby country of Romania, Haiducus’ homeland. With the aid of donations to a GoFundMe page (‘Help Bring Smiles to Ukrainian Refugee Children’), young recipients will also be treated to a cake and a small gift. The cards are written in English and French, and include a Ukrainian translation. Her husband, Paul Haiducu, a physics teacher at Avon High School, adapted the project for his classroom.

The birthday cards will be shipped to a non-governmental, humanitarian foundation located in the city of Suceava (close to the Romanian-Ukrainian border) called Fundația umanitară Jeni Mandachi. To thank the volunteers working to help refugees, Haiducu will also send several boxes of chocolates. The Haiducus will pay all shipping expenses. Haiducu truly believes, “Bringing joy to a sad child has an inestimable value, which cannot be measured in money.” ______________________________________________
