Don’t Be a Victim

By: Marina Keers, Executive Director Hendricks County Senior Services Most of the older adults that I know are kind, trusting, and polite. Many have savings, own a home, and have good credit. Unfortunately, these characteristics make older adults a prime and desirable target for scams and fraud. At least once a month a senior will call Hendricks County Senior Services and tell us about a scam they encountered, and sometimes fell victim to. One senior lost tens of thousands of dollars to a convincing “lottery” scam. She was suspicious of the major award she “won” but was convinced when the scammer sent her a lengthy legal document. Once she was convinced she sent them a check to pre-pay her taxes and then it was too late. Her savings were gone. Sadly, these scammers persist and will try many tactics to deceive their victims. They can sound professional or threatening. Often, they will create a sense of urgency and pressure to lure people into taking immediate action. Sometimes they will impersonate a family member, government employee, or trusted person, like a pastor. When in doubt, don’t act quickly and don’t open links or attachments in texts or emails. Medicare loses millions of dollars each year to fraudulent purchasing of medical equipment and medical tests. Fraud is so common that Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) volunteers throughout the country are available to provide support and information if you believe you are a victim of fraud. Hendricks County Senior Services has trained SMP volunteers that can help. Staying diligent and aware is a great defense. Hendricks County Senior Services is hosting a fraud prevention workshop this month that will be shared on the agency’s Facebook page on March 11. An in-person fraud prevention workshop will be held May 4 (all ages welcome). Call 317-745-4303 to get resources if you believe you might have been a victim of fraud. ______________________________________________

Bluebird Society Hosts Nesting Box Distribution

On Tuesday, March 15, the Hendricks County Bluebird Society will be distributing nesting boxes for the Eastern bluebird from 6-7 p.m. with a driveby distribution at the cattle barn on the Hendricks County Fairgrounds. If you have the proper habitat and are willing to prevent English sparrows from using the box, feel free to come and for a $10 donation get a nesting box. The proper habitat is an open area of short grass with a couple of shrubs or trees - not in the trees or tree line. English sparrows kill bluebirds, destroy their eggs and prevent them from using the nest box. They are non-native birds and must be prevented from using the box for the safety of the bluebirds.

Men IN Action By Melissa Gibson

Sheltering Wings will again ask men in the community to sign up for an opportunity to do a lot of good by setting an example and reading to local school children as part of the Men IN Action leadership program. In 2019, 435 men volunteered to walk into every K-5 classroom in Hendricks County and read a story to the students. The two following years were done virtually due to the pandemic but in 2022, they’re gearing up for another in-person event. Sheltering Wings is a home for survivors of domestic abuse and sponsors the Men IN Action group with the intent to spread the word that men can lead in more ways than one. Sean Wilson is a part of the Men IN Action leadership team and said creating a culture of leading men is important for youth today. “We want men taking preventative actions to mentor younger children in the community,” Wilson said. “As a leader, I think you have to lead by Gus Pearcy reads the Men IN Action READ book example, so if we expect selection to a group of students at Danville Elementary. kids to value reading, acSheltering Wings is seeking Volunteers are to participate cept others despite their differences and things like in the 2022 program. ______________________________________________ that, we have to lead by do the things we’re asking the kids to do.” The Men IN Action group has a breakfast each The March Genealogy The North Salem Chris- October including a guest Nuts meeting is Monday, tian Church will be hosting speaker and inspiring stoMarch 14, at 1 p.m. their annual Spud Dinner ries – all meant to engage Cindy Rutledge from on Saturday, March 12, the men in the community. the Indiana Room will talk 2022 at the church, located They’re currently looking about Countdown to 1950 at 6 North California St. in at ways to develop and inCensus.
