Sr. Center Enriches By: Marina Keers, Executive Director Hendricks County Senior Services
Yes, we do more at the Senior Center than play bingo. No, you can’t live at the Senior Center. Yes, you can enrich your life here! Hendricks County is blessed to have a vibrant, active, and welcoming Senior Center. The Center is a hub for activities and programming that improve physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and mental wellness. That includes fun activities such as games but also includes group exercise, daily lunch, educational classes, art classes, live music, Medicare counseling, dance lessons, and support groups. On, Friday March 4, dozens of senior center leaders from across Indiana are meeting in Danville for the Senior Center Coalition of Indiana Conference. At the heart of this gathering is a celebration of the value of Senior Centers and a conversation about how we will help our senior neighbors age in place. Research from the National Council on Aging demonstrates that, compared with their peers, senior center participants have higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction. It also shows that older adults who participate in senior center programs can learn to manage and delay the onset of chronic disease and experience measurable improvements in their physical, social, spiritual, emotional, mental, and economic well-being. This research confirms what we see every day at the Senior Center in Danville. Hendricks County is a wonderful place to live, work, play, and retire. It is our hope that aging adults have the support, information, and resources they need to live as independently as possible, in the home of their choice, for as long as possible. To learn more about the Senior Center, please call or stop by for a tour. Our newsletter is posted each month on our website (www.hcseniors.org) or hard copies are available in the Center at 1201 Sycamore Lane in Danville. ______________________________________________

Officer Chris Smith, right, receives the Lt. Gary Dudley DRE Instructor of the Year Award.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute recently honored a select group of police officers for their efforts in reducing impaired driving and making Indiana roads safer. The officers recognized, 22 in total, are part of the state’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program. DREs receive specialized training to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs. Because of their training, they are often called upon by law enforcement to assist with traffic stops with the goal of keeping impaired drivers off the road. Chris Smith, Hendricks County, Indiana State Excise Police, received the Lt. Gary Dudley DRE Instructor of the Year Award. Named to honor the memory of Indiana State Police Lieutenant Gary Dudley, who was struck and killed while participating in a charity bike ride in 2006, this award is presented to one instructor every year for exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the program. _____________________________________________
