Hendricks Civic Theater - Facebook
Hendricks Civic Theater’s next production, Radium Girls, by D.W. Gregory, will be a very special showcase for the young actors. “This show is HCT’s ‘Rising Star’ show,” explained Darby O’Brien, direct of the upcoming play. As a member of the Encore Association, composed of nonprofessional, nonprofit theater groups, HCT’s actors aged 13-20 are eligible for recognition at the group’s fall awards ceremony. “For the actors performing from all over Hendricks county, Radium Girls will be a great opportunity to reveal their talent in hopes of such recognition. O’Brien describes it as, “the equivalent of the Tony Awards for community theater.” The play is based on real events in history. “In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease,” according to O’Brien. Under O’Brien’s direction, with the help of her assistant director and producer, Karla Janning, the young actors will be telling the story of dial painter Grace Fryer in her fight for court justice. The play will be performed at Longstreet Playhouse, 4998 N CR 100 E, Danville, on March 3-6 and March 1013 (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2:30 p.m.). After her last show with Hendrick’s Civic Theater in 2019 (Sense and Sensibility), O’Brien is looking forward to returning to one of her favorite places to direct. Children three and under get free admission, tickets for youth and seniors cost $14, and tickets for everyone else cost $16. They can be purchased as in-person tickets or live-streaming tickets at hendrickscivic.com. ______________________________________________

St. Augustine Church in Danville will host its 7rth Shrove Tusesday Pancake Supper on March 1, from 5-7 p.m., carrying on a 74-year tradition. The first pancake event was in 1948. At that time St. Augustine members met in the Chapel of Canterbury College, on the site where the present Danville Town Hall is located. The supper that year took place in the basement of the Danville Christian Church, whose members generously offered their space to the fledgling little mission of Episcopalians. During the first supper parishioners helped defray the cost of the dinner by bringing fresh eggs and milk from their farms. In later years griddles were offered for use by PSI Energy (now Duke Energy) and pancake mix was donated by Aunt Jemima. For more about this year’s Pancake Supper, see the story on page A-11 of this issue.

Maple Syrup
The sugar maple trees produce a sweet treasure throughout the year, but when temperatures start to rise in the spring, that high-sugar content sap starts flowing and is collected to produce 100% natural maple syrup. You can see how it’s done during the 12th Annual Maple Syrup Days at McCloud Nature Park, Saturday, March 5 and Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. To learn about the production of maple syrup in the past and the present, load the family and come to this free event.. Tap a Tree: Visit the tree-tapping station where you’ll learn how sugar maple trees are identified in the winter (with no leaves!), how sap is collected from them, and how the trees respond to being tapped. Then try your hand at tree-tapping under the guidance of park staff. Be sure to bring your camera! How Maple Syrup WAS made: Warm yourself around a campfire as you learn how maple syrup has been made – and who made it – over the course of history. Visit the nearby Sugar Bush area with our own tapped trees to see if the sap is flowing. Try on a yoke similar to what was used in the past to haul buckets of sap to the campfire. This is another popular photo opportunity.
