The common denominators are public space, high artistic quality, and local relevance.

Since 2018, PASSAGE Festival has overseen the artistic programme and been part of the development of SO Festival in Skegness, UK, supported by Arts Council England, which has strengthened an artistic exchange between UK and Denmark.

PASSAGE Festival attracts both locals and tourists to actively take part in cultural events in the city squares, streets, and alleys. The festival programme deliberately has a wide span, and presents everything from classical street theatre acts, multidisciplinary site-specific collaborations, large-scale circus shows and intimate solos for a limited audience, side by side.

Collaborations, both international, regional, and local, are a cornerstone of PASSAGE: these collaborations are an important part of bringing international performances to the festival of a high artistic quality.

International networks and programmes, that PASSAGE Festival is a part of, include: The Creative Europe Programme, Erasmus+, Perform Europe, Circostrada, and several Nordic networks and programmes, supported by The Nordic Culture Fond. Within the Copenhagen greater region, PASSAGE Festival has been a successful part of the Helsingør-Helsingborg collaboration since 2004.

A high degree of local collaborations and anchorage is also part of ensuring the relevance and development of PASSAGE festival. The festival presents a programme in social housing areas in a collaborative strategic effort with social housing organizations, the municipalities, and The National Building Fund.

The festival collaborates with a large international network of festivals, and, as one of only a few festivals in Denmark, PASSAGE works with well documented curatorial princip les, curating not by artistic preferences in taste, but towards an overall strategy for the festival, where local relevance and anchorage plays an important role.

Spreading out geographically, making performances accessible to as many as possible, PASSAGE collaborates with local commercial centres, libraries and more on presenting performances in the small towns and areas surrounding the main cities of Helsingør and Helsingborg.

Two performances were developed on-site in and around Helsingør, both premiering at the festival: THROUGH THE WALL by Thomas Bentin Works (DK) and DANCE OF THE FISHERMAN by theatre director Caroline McSweeney and choreographer Taneli Törmä.

Together with the Helsingør based CATCH – Center for Arts, Design and Technology, the Danish artist Simone Wierød (DK) developed the interactive performance BOXED, while the three-year collaboration with Convoi Exceptionnel (DK) on presenting the site-specific TRILOGY FOR EDUCATIONAL SPACES continued in CRAWL CRAWL CRAWL, created for a public swimming pool

Bringing in new, international impulses is also important for the organization behind the festival. Supported by the European Solidarity Corps since 2021, the PASSAGE VOLUNTEER CAMP is a folk high school inspired two-week camp for young Europeans, both participating in a creative programme and committing themselves to engage in the organization and execution of the festival.

This year, the festival programme presented more than 45 different performances and 185 showings, intensifying during the last days of the festival, when moving into the city centre and always in a dialogue with the context and surrounding public space.

The basic premise for art in public space is to work in and with constantly changing environments, and to embrace the feedback from them.

PASSAGE Festival is the sum of the constant and mutual influence from city life and local community, international impulses and performances, artistic viewpoints and audience experiences, that together constitute a temporal, shared cultural experience in public space.

With a site-specific adaption of the choreographic and itinerant BEL HORIZON, Le G. Bistaki (FR) temporarily overtook “Sommariva”, dating back to the 1920’s as a public recreational area, that will soon be partly transformed into private Severalhousing.performances

The Cultural Harbour of Helsingør, a noticed success when talking about investing in culture, was an excellent framework for circus performances by e.g. Tripotes la Compagnie (BE) and 15feet6 (BE) as well as playful interactions with audiences by Collectif Primavez (FR) and This Maag (CH), who attracted large audience crowds.

Well-known for their site-specific work in the crossroads between circus, dance and juggling, Le G. Bistaki adapted Bel Horizon to the green area Sommariva. Tongue in cheek, swirling and graceful, skirt-wearing cowboys guided the audience through the grounds and transformed the recreational area into a series of Zorro inspired Western scenes, full of absurd humour, scurrying rapiers and vase juggling.

DOCUMENTATION PASSAGE Festival 2022 5

SOMMARIVA has a history since 1920’s for public recreation. Situated close to the beach, the green area is undergoing development, including private residential areas. Sommariva has for many years also been situated next to the city stadium, which has been vacated due to new stadium buildings else where. This gives the whole area a sense of temporary terrain vague – a perfect setting for Le G. Bistaki’s play with meanings of a given space.

The role of PASSAGE Festival as a platform for both international and Danish performing artists to experiment with and develop new formats is increasing. In 2022, the festival collaborated with several artists on new work, that all in various ways made a mark on local communities and challenged the audience on the perception of a given public space.

6 DOCUMENTATION PASSAGE Festival 2022

For three years, PASSAGE Festival is a presenting partner of Convoi Exceptionnel’s Trilogy for Educational Spaces: a site specific trilogy, creating atmospheric experiences away from the usual terrains of art, that challenge the cultural codes of our common educational and formational spaces.

TRANSFORMATIONSCHOREOGRAPHIC

CRAWL CRAWL CRAWL, the second part of the trilogy, used the epitome of welfare society, the public swimming pool, to frame the statistical absurdity and paradoxes of inequality in the welfare state: thus, in Helsingør Public Swimming Pool, the audience experienced the floating choir of Ensemble Edge, in design by Kit Wan, giving voices to a libretto composed by Lil Lacy, in an atmospheric, mediative and socially critical choir experience with 14 singers, working with and against the acoustics of the space.

Director Caroline McSweeney and choreographer Taneli Törmä developed the performance on site: During the entire month of July, the team lived in town and worked in and with the local community around the harbour.

A site-specific performance created specifically for the harbour of the small town Espergærde.

DANCE OF THE FISHERMAN BY LOCATION X+ LOCUS (IR + DK +FIN)

The result was a choreographed journey for audience and locals around the harbour and through the stories of fishermen, while the harbour life, the dancers’ movements, the performance soundscape and that of the harbour, all complemented each other.

8 DOCUMENTATION PASSAGE Festival 2022

THOMAS BENTIN WORKS (DK) developed the performance THROUGH THE WALL on site for and in three cities at once: in Helsingør, Køge and Copenhagen. Using the streets and alleys, buildings and squares, cobblestones and railings of Helsingør as a co-player for the dancers, the audience was taken on a choreographed walk through the city centre, turning the focus to the overlooked details, that make up a city.

BOXED BY SIMONE WIERØD (DK) was developed during Spring 2022 in collaboration with CATCH – Center for Arts, Design and Technology, located in Helsingør.

As an interactive, social sculpture placed on the huge area of Helsingør’s Cultural Harbour, it reflected upon The many different systems we are part of in society – physical, digital or mental. Through instructions in headphones, the audience each became a part of a larger choreographic system by moving boxes together – making a moving, choregraphed and temporal community for bypassers to watch.

COMMUNITIESPLAYGROUND

For PASSAGE Festival, the local anchorage is at the core. Collaborating with local institutions, organizations, and individuals is a central part of making art accessible not only in the city centre, but where people live, in the small towns and social housing areas around Helsingør. Since 2004, PASSAGE Festival has collaborated with the municipalities and social housing efforts of Helsingør and Helsingborg, on presenting performances, in Helsingør in the social housing areas of Vapnagaard, Nøjsomhed and Helsingør Nordvest. Thus, PASSAGE Festival reaches audiences, who normally does not attend theatre or other institutional cultural activities. This year, the programme focused on strengthening the community across the different social housing neighbourhoods together with from Helsingør Boligsociale Helhedsplan.

The city of Helsingør is a vibrant cultural city on many levels. When the festival artists move in, the city only becomes even more alive as a playful scene for living street theatre, visited by locals and tourists alike, whether they seek it out or just happen to stumble upon

along Kongekajen, right in the centre of Helsingør on the waterside, changed into a small temporary village of poetic with interactive play grounds and small performances for the whole family.

Here you could go in search of your special SECRETS in TOMBS CREATIUS (CAT) interactive tent, squeeze into the tiny, magical caravan for AVION PAPIER by COLLECTIF LA MÉANDRE (FR) or experience two performances by the circus family in the TEATRI MOBILI camp with handpuppets in MANOVIVA by GIROVAGO E RONDELLA (IT) or the musical, quirky ANTIPODI by DROMOSOFISTA (IT)

Over the last 15 years, Helsingør has transformed from a maritime and ship yard identity to a cultural hub. This is especially manifested in the Cultural Harbour area, where the old shipyard now houses The Culture Yard, while the dry dock has been transformed into the prize-winning M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark. The public squares in front are huge – and thus perfect for ambitious circus acts for a broad audience. Both LEAGUE & LEGEND by 15FEET6 (BE) and ENCORE UNE FOIS by TRIPOTES LA COMPAGNIE (BE) gathered large crowds with their acrobatic fight club and seesaw challenges.

THE CULTURAL HARBOUR

TOLDKAMMERGÅRDEN

14 DOCUMENTATION PASSAGE Festival 2022

The yard of the old culture house is the heart and stomach of PASSAGE Festival. With a programme designed for the youngest and families in the mornings and afternoons, such as TROLLE AND TORMOD (DK)’s full blown reggaeshow for the kids, and a bit more edgy in the evenings, e.g., the satirical, feminist punk-acrobatic celebration of BREAST IN PEACE by M.P.A.C (SE). Toldkammergården is always busy with people and performances. The café caters to both audiences, artists and festivalcrew, which makes Toldkammergården a special meeting place for all.

PLAYFUL CITY

The shopping streets shifted into a playful scene, when artists did their magic and playfully improvised and activated both passers-by and intentional audiences: THIS MAAG (CH) created a special bond to both young and old audience in DAS IST DER GIPFEL TEI TEI by CIA. ES CIRC (ES) involved audiences in creating scenes with tape as the only prop, while the queer danceperformance GENDERJOY by GAZART (DK) contrasted the typical scenery of the pedestrian streets.

MDR – DEATH FROM LAUGHTER by LOS GALINDOS (ES) took off from a very unremarkable parking lot in the late evenings. From here, the three clowns Gabriel Agosti, Marcel Escolano (founder of Los Galindos) and Anicet Leone elegantly took the audience through an unimaginable experience of continuous confusion, growing dis belief, culminating in the ultimate surrender by both audience and theatre critics:

The excellent acrobatics, the elegant artistry, and the bloody, moving and transgressive orgy of near-death experiences, topped off with a linguistically genius dialogue, is mastered only by very few. Los Galindos master it to perfection.”

“MDR – Death from Laughter surpasses anything we normally see in Denmark. (…)

One of the privileges as a festival is being able to create contrasts: Both in the programme to highlight the enormous span in form and content within outdoor performing arts. But also contrasts to the public spaces, and the anticipations we have to our common behaviour in these spaces. DEPARTEMENTET (DK) stirred the shopping streets with a solo of rage, frustration and powerlessness towards the capitalistic powerful structures and his own role as a HOMO ØKONOMIKUS. A street party was set up in STRANDVEJSFESTEN by the beach in one of the most exclusive and wealthy areas of Denmark: Performers HELENE KVINT AND CHARLOTTE BØVING (DK) took on the role as the scor ned, enviable upper-class onions, culturally politically serving up conversations on privileges and community around the coffee table.

ANTOINETTE HELBING (DK) experimented together with the audience in a wordless, physical exploration of laughter in the LAUGHING GAME.

VOLUNTEERPASSAGE CAMP

For the third time, with funding from the European Solidarity Corps, PASSAGE Festival facilitated an exchange program for young people from across Europe, while involving them in the making of the festival.

PASSAGE Volunteer Camp was a two-week folk high school inspired camp for 12 young people from Denmark, Poland, Austria, and Germany. In the first week, the focus was on creative work: Choreographer Mette Overgaard from Running Sculptures (DK) ran a participatory creative workshop using choreography, improvisation, movement and looping sounds. The result, Looping Choreography, had a showing at the festival. During the second week, the volunteers were in charge of audience handling in specific areas and assisted in setting up the festival. They were a priceless help at the festival, and joined the festival team with enthusiasm, responsibility and ownership!

started in the social housing areas of Planteringen, Högaborg and Fredriksdal with among other things theatre, workshops, the Sing along-train and acrobatics. The activities engaged the local inhabitants, and the performances activated the areas in new ways for the people who live there.

The last days of the festival, PASSAGE was once again back in the streets and squares of the inner city of Helsingborg after having been moved outside the city centre the last couple of years. This year, people could experience street theatre in the pedestrian streets and central squares, from Kullagatan, to Konsul Olssons plats to Sundstorget, around and inside Dunkers kulturhus and along Kajpromenaden at the harbour area. There were many magical meetings between the crowds and the performers. PASSAGE really gave an exotic vibe to the city and put a smile to many faces along the way.

SOCIAL MEDIA + PRESS

THE PRINTED PRESS coverage of PASSAGE Festival 2022 included local, regional, and national news outlets. Coverage has been both broad enough to reach a wide reader demographic, as well as in-depth to contribute with new and fresh perspectives to the festival and the performances.

PASSAGE Festival has been collaborating with local newspaper HELSINGØR DAGBLAD for many years: an independent professional writer thus featured daily articles during the festival, both background stories on artists and reviews of perfor mances. While the regional newspaper FREDERIKSBORG AMTS AVIS covered the festival with local recommendations and reports from the festival. Reviews of PASSAGE festival at large gave special credence to the broad appeal of the festival, the high artistic merit and the diversity of the performances, as noted by POLITIKEN, one of the largest newspapers in Denmark. mehallenMengenundernastiksalen,restillingengjortptionnelmpagnietLæringsrum,dykkerneddeivplelserderoserfaringerørstefogranskedegym-ogblistpåASSAGFestiva2021,æstesidsteforestillinindtagerklasserelsedennegangerSvømmehallenerinteresnrelateretil,

Leading up to the festival, artists were invited to takeover PASSAGE social media profiles: This provided a broader reach for the artists and festival as well as a peek behind the scenes of their performan ces. During the festival both influencers and regular audience alike shared their recommendations, which was noticeable at performances afterwards.

PASSAGE Festival is an internationally oriented festival with many collaborators in both Sweden and in Denmark. Through these collaborations, international artists are offered more performances in a regional tour. By collaborating as festivals on presenting inter national compagnies, we secure a much more sustainable model for both artists and presenters, financially as well as regarding our collective environmental footprint.
