The Woodcutter’s Daughter By local resident David Edwards he shaft of morning sunlight came through arah s bedroom window like the beam from a very powerful torch. he woke suddenly, not by any noise but by something passing her window and breaking the beam of light causing a shadow to pass over her eyes. Although she d had another restless night she was instantly wide awake, throwing back her uilt she umped out of bed and ran to the window. tanding next to the small panes of glass set into the old wooden frame arah looked out over the lush green fields and could see nothing but a clear blue sky and five or six cows that stood grazing around the old well in the corner of the field. Resting her elbows on the windowsill she still wasn t sure about the move to their new house.

ust trying to make it easier for her to settle in. er constant restless nights were due to disturbing dreams that although when asleep were uite vivid, were never clear in her mind when she awoke. he knew that in her dream, a young girl was the sort of ‘central character and was very unhappy, but that was all she could ever remember. As she looked at her reflection in the window she recalled it had been six weeks to the day since they d moved from the city and although she d settled in at her new school, she missed her old friends.

there were no new messages, at first her old friends had sent text messages every day but over the last week or so they hadn t been returning her messages as often as they used to. Rolling onto her stomach she typed, ‘see you in the coffee shop at ten and sent the message to enna, her new best friend. lipping the phone into her back pocket she took some loose change from the moneybox that sat on her bedside table. icking up the silver backed brush from the vanity set that stood on her dressing table she uickly brushed her shoulder length blonde hair, the few knots that had formed during the night from her restless sleep were soon brushed out.

arah loved the weekend, there was no school to attend and as it was now half term, no homework either. he dressed hrowing the brush onto her in her scruffy eans and multi bed she ran down the stairs to coloured top before walking he loved her room though, across the landing towards the the kitchen to find her mum her mother had decorated it bathroom, the old floorboards sitting at the breakfast table ust the way she wanted it and creaked as she passed the with a cup of tea. ‘I m off to the carved initials on the old grandfather clock that read five meet enna in the village she wooden bedroom door were past nine. After washing her said as she grabbed her coat ust brilliant. er mother face and brushing her teeth she from behind the kitchen door. had said they d always been returned to her room. ying ‘ arah arpenter, you should there, ust waiting for her to on her bed she slid her hand have some breakfast before arrive but arah knew she was underneath the silk covered you go out, her mother s replicating the plastic ones pillow and found her mobile words faded as the heavy from her old room and was phone. he was disappointed door closed. arah unfastened To advertise call: 01928 727 165 or email: helsbytohand@btinternet.com 20

the safety helmet from the crossbar of her new bike and clipped the strap firmly into place under her chin before starting off down the long drive for the ten minute ride to the village. he felt the warm sun on her back as she rode down the uiet lane and started to pick up some speed as she freewheeled down the steep hill. uddenly, a dark shadow passed directly in front of her and she felt as though she d ridden through an ice cold shower. ulling hard on her rear brake she lost control and skidded off the path. he front wheel hit a large stone and she was sent hurdling over the handlebars, crashing heavily into one of the old oak trees that lined the country lane. he was cold, very cold and although she knew she was lying down she had the strangest sensation, it was as though she was coming out of her body, floating through the air. pening her eyes she was surprised to see that she was facing her bedroom door, staring at her carved initials. he letters were clearly visible and as she continued to look an even stranger thing happened, water began to run from the bottom of the letters. It ran slowly at first and then started to come out of each letter like a shower, soaking her from head to toe, making her feel even colder.

one she d seen as she cycled to the village, it moved towards the wooden door and passed straight through it. arah was frightened she d never been so afraid but leant forward and opened the door ust in time to see the shadow disappear through the window. he tried to run but found herself slowly floating towards the window, when she finally got there the shadow had gone it was nowhere to be seen.

enna, telling her things that she hadn t even told her mum, trying to explain about the bad dreams she d been having and the weird experience she d had after her accident.

er eyes scoured the sunlit landscape but saw nothing untoward but then, almost magnetically her gaze was drawn to the cows, chewing the cud close to the well in the corner of the field.

he spoke in a voice that enna thought sounded really odd but she was her friend and would stick with her. ‘ , enna said, ‘it can t do any harm, lets go and take a look.

‘ arah, arah , she heard her mothers voice as she slowly opened her eyes, ‘oh thank od her mother said as arah realised she was lying in a hospital bed. eople in white coats were all around her, machines beeped and the mask that was over her mouth and nose hissed as it forced air into her lungs. he was no longer cold, in fact she felt rather warm as her mother gently caressed her forehead. A doctor restrained her as she tried to sit up, ‘not ust yet young lady he said in a firm but friendly voice, ‘your chest is bruised and you ve had a nasty bump on your head, it s a good ob you were wearing your helmet.

‘ y initials are carved on my bedroom door, water sprayed from them and when I looked from the window, I couldn t stop staring at the well. I need to have a look down there, I ust know it has something to do with my dreams.

autiously they peered over the small wall that surrounded the old disused well and their eyes strained to see into the black depths. enna picked up a large stone and let it drop into the well, three seconds later they heard a faint thud as the stone hit the dry floor. ‘I want to go down there, we re going to need a rope and a torch. ‘ o you think you should, enna replied in a rather nervous voice, ‘it could be full of snakes or anything. ‘ on t be silly, there are no snakes here, arah said. As they turned around to head for the barn they both screamed, a typically loud, girly scream. our cows had silently moved to within six feet of them, the cows ran off probably more scared of them

than they were of the cows. en minutes later the rope was secured around arah s waist and having wrapped it around the wooden support set into the wall of the well, enna took the strain. ‘ on t let me fall, arah said as she lowered herself over the edge and started to climb down the steep damp walls. enna slowly lowered her friend and as she disappeared into the darkness arah turned on the torch. he story made front page news in the local paper when the remains of the girl s body were laid to rest. arah arpenter, the thirteen year old daughter of a local

woodcutter had been sent on an errand to the village over eighty years ago and had gone missing, she was never found. he police interviewed arah and enna and came to the conclusion that cows had always grazed in that field and had probably frightened the young girl as she stood next to the well, ust as they had frightened them, and tragically the girl must have fallen to her death. enna slept over that evening, keeping arah company. arah didn t have any bad dreams that night in fact she had the most restful nights sleep she d had since they d moved.

Barmy about the British Bulldog by Kate McLelland

ith some puppies costing as much as an nglish Bulldog an Club on acebook with 1 followers and merchandise that includes t shirts fridge magnets cushions and Christmas cards it s clear that we Brits are more than a little barmy about our bulldogs. o what s the reason for this enduring love affair ver the past two hundred years our perception of this popular breed has gradually changed as its image has transformed from feisty fighting dog to everyone s favourite family pet. Bull g eg nn ngs owadays as we laugh at funny acebook posts of bulldogs in hats or bulldogs splayed on couches legs outstretched in an oddly human pose it s hard to grasp that the ancestors of this well loved family pet were bred to e cel in vicious blood sports.

Bulldogs were selectively bred for this bloodthirsty pastime which was finally banned by the Cruelty to nimals ct of 1 . hroughout the 1 th century the phrase British bulldog spirit as a watchword for unrelenting courage and bravery became embedded in the public s consciousness and when the irst orld ar broke out in the early th century images of plucky bulldogs accompanied by slogans such as hey can t mu le me became a staple of wartime propaganda posters. t was a strange co incidence that the man at the forefront of British politics during the econd orld ar as the country faced the very real possibility of a a i invasion bore a striking resemblance to a bulldog and a famous poster entitled olding the Line showed inston Churchill s head superimposed onto a bulldog s body.

car mascot with a cheerful oooh yes ooh no catchphrase helped the bulldog reclaim its place in the nation s hearts. nd it was perhaps inevitable that as soon as the referendum vote was cast back in une 1 the British Bulldog would be summoned out of its kennel to do battle once more with pundits from both sides using the image to support their arguments. T e last r ccording to a survey conducted in 1 and 1 one in four of us owns a dog but despite the enduring popularity of the nglish Bulldog breed it seems that it has only managed to reach number si in the nation s poll of most popular dogs while acre Bleu the rench Bulldog has recently been tipped to replace the Labrador as Britain s best loved canine pet. s our withdrawal from the draws ever closer could we be preparing to swap our year old icon of British identity for something a little more um uropean in style

ith its stocky muscular body shape and vice like aw the bulldog breed was deemed Bre t ull gs perfect for the violent sport of uring the final decades of bull baiting in particular the the th century the bulldog practice of pinning the bull breed fell out of fashion but where specially trained dogs in 1 a string of popular e can guess what Churchie were taught to bite and hold on ads featuring Churchill aka oooh no to the32 captive animal s snout.e call: Churchie a nodding head lsby would say . om

Twisted Fairy Tales If you like your fairy tales more Brothers Grimm than Disney, you’re in for a treat with this lot… The Bloody chamber and other Stories – angela carter Angela Carter is often seen as the queen of the reimagined fairy tale. In this collection, the stories are as dark, twisted and brilliantly written as they come. The main story, The Bloody Chamber, is a retelling of the French folk tale Bluebeard, which sees a young wife make a gruesome discovery in a locked room at her new husband’s house. The collection also includes retellings of Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Red Riding Hood.

Revolting Rhymes – Roald Dahl Dahl’s childhood classic is more than 35 years old but still just as funny today. Six well-known fairy stories are reimagined in rhyme, with various twists to the tales and extra helpings of gore. Cinderella’s stepsister has her head chopped off, Red Riding Hood turns out to be a crack shot with a pistol and Jack’s mum gets eaten when she climbs the beanstalk. Great fun for kids and parents alike.

Kissing the Witch – emma Donoghue Donoghue wrote Kissing the Witch long before her bestselling Room. It’s a collection of 13 rewritten well-known tales, including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Whether it’s Cinderella choosing the Fairy Godmother over the prince, or Beauty discovering an entirely unexpected Beast, the tales are original and well-written. They’re also very short – perfect for enjoying over a coffee break.

The Surface Breaks – louise o’Neill The True Story of Hansel The Surface Breaks is a Grimm Tales for old and and Gretel – louise murphy feminist reimagining of The Young – philip pullman In Nazi-occupied Poland, Little Mermaid. When Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, at ust 42 years old, she had no idea that this would be a turning point in her life. Mum of two, Karen, went through 18 months of treatment which left her with several ongoing problems, I had nerve damage to my hands and feet, my sense of balance was affected, I struggled with memory, word recall and planning, and then I was diagnosed with depression and PTS . Since Karen s diagnosis, she has worked hard to overcome these dif culties and in anuary oined a fundraising event for Mind, the mental health charity, speaking about this she says, Mental illness affects one in four people at some point in their lives, I felt in a position to raise awareness through sharing my experiences on my blog. It was almost by chance that Karen began writing poetry, she says, Poetry enables me to express the deep emotions associated with my experiences and allows me to process them. In a way it s like a self-help therapy. I was astounded when my poetry began to be accepted for publication in anthologies. This gave me the con dence to work on my own collection of poetry. Karen s debut book, Kaleidoscopic Beauty: A collection of poetry on love, loss and the beauty of the natural world is now available on Ama on. Her second book, I am the Stars in the Sky is planned for ovember 2018.

This collection of poems is the perfect example of the type of magic that poetry can produce. The whole book is almost like a ourney through life. If you ve ever looked through a kaleidoscope, you know it creates a series of beautiful images. The same can be said for the poetry in Kaleidoscopic Beauty. A wonderful reminder that from life s greatest challenges can come great beauty. o a are at www.BlueSky ays365.com Twitter HorsleyPoet Facebook BlueSky ays365 50

Want to save for your children? What are the options? be aware of the different types of accounts and investments available so what are some of the options when it comes to saving for your children

utting money aside for your children is a great way to offer them a little security as they get older. ou do not need to save a huge amount even a few pounds each week adds up to a nice little nest egg over time. ou can teach younger children good money management skills by offering a little more pocket money as long as they save the e tra amount. f they are old enough get them involved in choosing a savings account and physically putting the money into it each month. H ou do not need to save regularly to make a difference however you could put some money away as and when it is available if that suits you better and move it around if a better interest rate comes up.

B aving into a piggy bank is so simple and a great idea for younger children. ou might be surprised how much can be saved this way and not only that it teaches young children more than one important life lesson. Learning to take responsibility for putting money away safely the value of money and the fact that you have to save for the things you want from life are all important factors. t is a straightforward way to save. ou can teach a young child the value of each coin. here are two types of for children a Cash unior and a tocks and hares unior . hey are available if your child is under 1 and living in the and you can open one or both types of account.

Canada Adventure on Athabasca By olange ando

preading out from the Columbia the largest icefield in the ockies thabasca is among the world s most accessible glaciers a popular day trip from Lake Louise asper or even Banff though this involves a longer drive. inding along the Continental ivide past soaring peaks forests waterfalls and lakes the cefields arkway leads almost to the very edge near the meeting point of the asper and Banff ational arks. p there the iscovery Centre is the first point of call with e hibits on the history and movements of the ice and the area s natural world. t is the perfect introduction before tackling the day s adventure but one should be prepared for changing weather and high altitude with the glacier s average height around metres. here are walking trails for the brave and well organised treats in season led by knowledgeable and highly entertaining guides.

five minute bus transfer from the centre. Built into the rock carefully integrated into the environment with near ero footprint it begins along a vertiginous cliff s edge then steps out on a semi circular look out with a glass floor perched metres above the valley. here you are suspended between heaven and earth the unwapta river meandering far below the red craggy rocks almost within arm s reach the soaring birds mighty glaciers and snow covered peaks rising all around.

ven more e citing is the iconic ride on one of the giant ce plorers. he first few minutes include a steep scary descent on a stone track until you reach the edge of the thabasca a tongue of ice si km long and thicker in places than the iffel ower. lacial vistas snowy mountains etched into the sky it s like the end of the world even though the plorer can only venture so far on the crunchy surface. he ice is pure blue in places irst on anyone s list is the award winning skywalk ust laby as this is the only colour it ing to

cannot absorb. hen the giant stops giving you ten minutes or so to walk around the safe icy section. o one ventures beyond the danger cones for untouched snow and ice are ama ingly thick dotted with hidden crevasses and water holes where lives have been lost. ometimes a deep rumble echoes in the thin mountain air and you might spot an avalanche tumbling down the slope ust ahead of you. on t e pect to be alone on the glacier it is highly popular but whatever the crowds you can switch off and commune with the natural world so mighty and inspiring. isitors leaving before dusk are likely to see bears and elks close to the road and those on the way to asper might en oy the last rays of the sun on the thabasca waterfall. eanwhile high above on the edge of the glacier the lucky ones settle down in the lodge for a starlit night. trange noises in the dark may remind them that the thabasca is always on the move receding by around five metres a year. 59

Great people to buy your Windows & Conservatories from!

f you’re thinking about brightening up your home with new windows or extending and increasing the value of your property by adding a conservatory, our new guide ‘The Seven Costly and Potentially Disastrous Mistakes People Make When Buying Conservatories and Windows’ will help you ensure you get exactly what you pay for.

Is this what’s on your mind? After installing 92,500 double glazed units and 3,814 conservatories David says he knows what’s on your mind when you’re considering buying windows and conservatories. 1. You don’t want to be pressured into buying – so we don’t employ those high pressure salespeople that double glazing companies have become infamous for. Instead, our designers will work with you, at your own pace and help you to maximise your budget and have complete peace of mind. 2. You worry about the safety of your money – so we don’t ask for big up front payments. As a long established, financially stable company, we’re not desperate to get our hands on your money.

Window and door designs to capture your imagination

3. You’re concerned about the mess that might be caused – so we employ a ‘tidy up system’ and we clean as we go, window by window, day by day. 4. You don’t want to be let down by missed start or completion dates – so we employ one of the industries top installation managers to manage our ten highly experienced fitting teams, some of whom have now been with us for over thirteen years. 5. And of course you want a fair price – our quotations speak for themselves… see for yourself by phoning for a free quotation or visiting our showroom for a no hassle browse.

Gardening Beautiful Bulbs

by Pippa Greenwood multi purpose compost for indoor bulb displays but better still buy yourself some bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb planting. t s more e pensive than multi purpose compost but performs better in bulb bowls or other containers without drainage.

rnaments on your windowsills and shelves are pretty enough but why not make your house all the more special this winter with some bowls of bulbs that are really brimful of colour perhaps with gorgeous perfume too ou can buy ready planted bowls of bulbs later in the year but act now and you could soon have a stunning display at a fraction of the price.

but the results may be unpredictable. like to use some prepared hyacinths but ust cannot help creating more bowls of non prepared bulbs too. isit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale plus all the other things you need. pecial bulb bowls are a good buy and are available in ust about every colour imaginable. hey re rather like huge soup bowls but in plastic or china. nlike standard pots they have no drainage holes which is better for your furniture ou can use normal flower pots but do make sure you put a fully waterproof container or saucer beneath each pot or watering will prove messy later on.

yacinths for forcing are available in ust about every shade imaginable red pink white cream yellow and blue. t is best to use a single colour in any one container as there is often some variation in flowering times between the colours and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. pecially prepared crocus paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. f you want to make some seriously low cost bowls then do as do and buy a large bag of ine pensive dwarf narcissus such as the cheerful often multi headed ete a ete . hey work very well as do crocuses.

he best bulbs are those described as prepared which basically means they have been put through a carefully planned se uence of conditions to ensure that ill your bowl about one they flower well reliably third full of compost for and uniformly indoors. larger bulbs to one half repared bulbs are often full for smaller bulbs. irm a bit pricier but are still the compost gently but great value. ou can also use 70 standard bulbs rtise cal ou can use1standard il: helsby don t compact it or the

a cool shed garage or cupboard under the stairs is ideal. t needs to be both dark and cool or the bulbs will not form good root systems.

roots of the bulbs will not penetrate it well and you ll end up with bulbs popping out of the top of the bowl. osition the bulbs pointed end uppermost you can put them uite close to each other but not so close that they are touching their neighbours and make sure they are not in contact with the sides of the bowl either. estle the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that ust the noses the pointed end from which the shoots will appear are poking out. ater the compost lightly making sure it is moist but not waterlogged. hen cover the bowls loosely with a black bin liner and put them in a cool dark place

Check the bowls every week or so and apply a little more water if necessary. t is time to bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about cm tall which usually takes weeks. ut them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight a cool but frost free greenhouse or a spare room window sill for instance. he shoots will continue to grow and develop a healthy green colour they will now need a little more water.

nce the flower buds ust start to colour up you can put your bulb bowl in a warmer room where you will soon be able to en oy its perfume and good looks. f you want to give the bowl a really smart look cover the compost with some moss or tie a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Don’t fall for fraudsters The Centre for Counter Fraud Studies at the University of Portsmouth estimates that 10% of all frauds are aimed at the elderly, with over-65s being three times more likely to lose money to fraudsters than being burgled – and 54 times more likely to be defrauded than physically robbed. Computer fraud is one of the fastest growing categories, with scams such as callers pretending to be from technology companies becoming increasingly common. Always treat unsolicited calls with suspicion. Microsoft, BT, Amazon or Apple will never call to tell you that you have a computer problem, and your bank will never call asking for your online banking details. The same applies to emails: whether it’s Microsoft or Halifax, if an email is demanding you click a link to log in and solve some urgent problem, it’s fake.

ARE YOU THE PARENT OF A TEENAGER?

If so, you might be interested in this FREE course: “Time Out for Parents – The Teenage Years” -one of the Positive Parenting courses from `Care for the Family`.

Help and advice on parenting in those teenage years!

- to build strong relationships - to enjoy family life This 7 week course will begin on Thursday 8th November at 8pm @ Main Street Community Church, (next to the Vet`s) WA6 7DF. For more information, contact Ruth: parenting@mscc.org Open to all. Pre-booking recommended. Course book available for a suggested donation of £8:50

We begin our journey with quintessentially British music of the last century. For our concert on November 10th, “We will Remember Them” through the music of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Paul Mealor, Karl Jenkins and, from across the pond, music from, “Saving Private Ryan” by John Williams. It is intended to be a particularly poignant and fitting tribute to the end of The First World War commemorations, taking place on the eve of the Armistice, itself. We are to be joined by members of Frodsham Players who will incorporate readings to complement our musical offerings which are rich and varied. Sue Marrs, a great friend of the choir will perform with us and include, as part of her contribution, “Dido’s Lament” by Purcell as well as “We’ll Gather Lilacs” by Ivor Novello. We will also include The Last Post being sounded.
