My total admiration goes out to local resident Jen Osman who has signed up to ‘Brave the Shave’ for Macmillan and will be shaving her head on 14th November... that really is brave!

Frodsham W.I. were delighted by the success of Frodsham’s “Make it, Bake it, Grow it, Show it, Show” held at Frodsham Community Centre on Saturday 12th September. More than 200 items of garden produce, handicraft, floral art, baking, photography and art were on display. You can read more about these on the community pages.

Cake and Bake Halloween Macaroons

For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons?

Ingredients: • 230g icing sugar, sifted • 75g ground almonds • 2 large egg whites • 50g caster sugar • Orange and black food colouring gel • 55g unsalted butter, softened • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling

TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days. Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery.

Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside.

2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking. Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue.

Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange.

3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted.

4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle. Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3.

5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons.

7. To make the filling, beat the butter, remaining icing sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place all the undecorated macaroon shells flat-side up on a board. Pipe a small mound of the buttercream onto each shell then gently sandwich together with a decorated shell, pressing down gently.

Short Story Sloe Gin

The weak afternoon sun could not reach the house at the bend in the lane. The path through the garden was criss-crossed with brambles, and the front door seemed held together by its peeling coat of brown paint.

Gertrude checked the address scrawled inside the purse, raised her hand and knocked.

She waited. From somewhere inside she heard lumpy footsteps, then a rusty key turned and the door creaked open. An elderly man with wild eyebrows appeared. He wore Wellington boots and a dusty dinner jacket. The most remarkable thing about him was his height; he seemed barely able to reach a light switch.

“Is your wife at home?”

Gertrude asked breezily.

“Who wants to know?” he said gruffly, his milky blue eyes examining her.

“I found her purse in the lane,” she offered, “I just came to return it.”

“My wife is away,” he grumbled, “visiting her sister in the Baltic.”

“Perhaps you could reunite her with it on her return?”

“Maybe.” He looked her up and down. “You’ll do.”

“I beg your pardon?” Gertrude asked in surprise.

“My wife made it. Perhaps I could pour you a small glass?”

“There really is no need,” Gertrude insisted, “I just wanted to return her purse.”

“She never uses that one anymore.” The man waved his hand dismissively. “Now, about that sloe gin.”

“Actually I must dash, my friend is waiting for me,” Gertrude lied.

“This will only take a minute,” he said firmly, closing the front door. Gertrude shivered.

“It’s all yours,” Gertrude said. “I really must be on my way.”

She stepped towards the door but the man barred her way.

“I’m hoping this could be our little secret?” he said. “My wife hid it up there, because she knew I wouldn’t be able to reach.”

“You just need to jump up there and reach it down,” he said. “Up you get.”

“Vertigo, I’ve got vertigo,” the old man snapped. “That purse has been out in the lane for two days and you’re the first person who’s come to return it.”

In a daze Gertrude climbed onto the stool, which wobbled drunkenly.

“Come inside,” he ordered, “you’re letting all the cold air in.”

Confused, Gertrude stepped into a dark kitchen that smelled

“How much do you want?” he said, cradling it like a new baby.

“Honestly, it’s fine,” Gertrude said, backing away.

“Are you sure?” His eyebrows bounced up and down. “Not any?”

“It’s up there, look.” The man pointed, dragging a rickety stool across the kitchen floor.

Gertrude peered into the shadows above a battered oak dresser and saw a dusty glass jar.

She lifted the sticky glass jar, and shuddered. It was surrounded by a sprinkling of mouse droppings. The stool wobbled and the lumpy liquid sloshed unpleasantly. Whatever was inside the jar, she had no desire to drink it or be covered in it. Quickly she passed it to the old man.

“I said ‘I suppose you want a reward.’” He opened the door fully. “Come in.”

“I honestly don’t want any,” Gertrude said, glad to be back on solid ground. His face brightened.

“Because of your height?”

Gertrude asked.

It took Gertrude a moment to realise that she’d been tricked into enabling this strange little man’s love of sloe gin. She smiled courteously in spite of herself.

“Glad to be of service.”

“Just one more thing,” he said, as he clumsily poured himself a generous measure, “can you come round again to put it back up there before my wife gets back?”

Dog Coats: Necessity, Not a Fashion Statement.

When it comes to fashion for dogs, you may scoff at the thought of your pet wearing the latest designer polo neck or woolly jumper. Traditional dog coats have been around for a long time, however, and are an essential item in a dog’s wardrobe.

When your dog gets wet, although its

coat has some waterrepellent qualities,

it still takes a long time to dry, which makes the dog susceptible to colds and chills and puts a strain on its immune system.

The right choice of dog coat will depend on a number of factors, including: • The size of your dog • Your budget • Whether you want a single waterproof coat or one with a separate fleece • Whether the dog jumps into water, or if it is a hunting dog Measuring from the base of the dog’s neck to the base

of its tail will help you decide on the right size, although most coats of this type are adjustable. Fleece linings will keep your dog cosy, with some having a ‘hood’ or a collar that is lifted over the dog’s head and neck, offering extra protection from the elements.

As far as material goes, microfibre has become a popular choice for dog owners as it offers their pet warmth, water-resistance and windproofing. Quilted and padded coats are often bulky, and although they are warm, may be restrictive to wear.

Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves?

Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, tree-loving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

Leaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen.

If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate.

So, like it or not, you need to do something - the sooner the better!

After collecting the leaves, make leaf mould. It is easy and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free!

Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage.

Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…and then leave them be. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade.

Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres.

by Kate McLelland It’s now six months since UK residents aged 55 or over became able to access the money in their pension pots and spend or invest it as they wish. Previously pensioners had been offered little choice other than buying an annuity, but on April 6th 2015 older people suddenly found themselves confronted by a bewildering range of options.

The idea that pensioners can use their accumulated savings for any purpose (even to “get a Lamborghini” according to the famous quote by pensions minister Steve Webb) has proved controversial, but many older investors have welcomed the changes.

Create a plan that works for you Savers now have three main choices when it comes to their pension pot:

• You don’t withdraw anything, leaving your pension pot invested until you need it. The pension fund provider may charge a management fee but you won’t pay tax while the sum remains untouched, and if you die before the age of 75 you can pass it on tax-free.

• You buy an annuity – this is an insurance policy that guarantees you a regular income for the rest of your life, no matter how long you live.

Alternatively, some pension providers will allow you to withdraw your pension pot cash in small, regular chunks over time. You can even mix and match some of the options above to create a plan that’s right for you.

Hobbies What your brain can gain from a musicmaking hobby

By Kate McLelland When did you last pick up a musical instrument and play a piece of music from beginning to end? Last week? Last month? Last year?

Sadly for most people the answer is quite likely to be: “Not since I was a child.”

Musicians are most likely to develop their abilities during childhood. It’s the ideal time to learn basic skills such as reading music and playing an instrument, but as children turn into teenagers it’s not unusual to find that the pleasures of learning and playing are sacrificed to the pressures of taking exams, studying at college or university and – eventually – taking up fulltime work.

In Sweden, researchers interviewed a random selection of 16 to 19 year olds who enjoyed regular music sessions. Starting in the 1980s, the researchers returned at specific times over the next two decades to interview their subjects. They discovered that by the time the respondents had reached their twenties, the proportion still managing to attend weekly sessions had dramatically decreased to just 6%.

Other reports have suggested that playing music can improve listening skills, encourage better self-discipline, help with memory and even increase the IQ of both children and adults. In 2009 the University of Zurich conducted research with people aged 65 and over and discovered that playing an instrument for an hour a week produced strong changes in the brain. Psychologist Lutz Jancke from the university described the outcomes revealed by the research:

So whether you’re returning to an instrument you once loved to play, or learning for the first time, you can enjoy your hobby in the knowledge that you’re not just bringing pleasure to others through your music, you are enhancing your brain’s capabilities.

If you’re feeling insecure about your musical skills, those first few steps towards learning (or returning to) a musical instrument will be crucial.

You should make sure that tuition progresses at just the right pace for you: too fast, and you may lose confidence, too slow, and you’ll quickly become bored and frustrated.

Fortunately there are a number of organisations whose purpose is to signpost musicians towards the help they need to develop. There are many resources out there, so take your time to explore the options, working towards a solution that’s tailor-made for your level of skill and experience.

(N.B Full page Community Event adverts do incur a charge) Local resident Jen Osman has signed up to ‘Brave the Shave’ for Macmillan and will be shaving her head on 14th November!!

Jen works for North West Ambulance Service as a Paramedic based at Runcorn, she lives in Dunham on the Hill and reads Helsby to Hand regularly (nice to hear Jen!) Jen wanted to ‘Brave the Shave’ for two reasons. Her sister in law, Barbara has been fighting cancer for the last 20 years (this is the third time) and she has been having weekly IV chemotherapy for the past two years. Barbara currently holds the record for having the most IV chemotherapy in the UK! “Barbara has been my inspiration as she is a beautiful person, always positive and a real fighter. I think her story is a real inspiration, especially to others facing cancer treatment. I’m also doing it in memory of my wonderful Mum Margaret who died of bowel cancer in 2002.

Frodsham Shows Off! Frodsham W.I. led by President,Vivien Shaw were delighted by the success of Frodsham’s “Make it, Bake it, Grow it, Show it, Show” held at Frodsham Community Centre on Saturday 12th September. More than 200 items of garden produce, handicraft, floral art, baking, photography and art were on display.

This was the Frodsham W.I. contribution to the nationwide celebration of the W.I. Centennial year. Frodsham Horticultural Show, a popular annual event for many years had ceased to exist and this was a chance to revive it giving the whole community an opportunity to get involved.

Local businesses and Frodsham Town Council sponsored the event and enjoyed selecting the “Best in Show” award. Hazel Catt from the Council and a representative of Taylor’s Optician’s combed through 45 categories before selecting a beautifully appliquéed and embroidered quilt entered by Kate Cawley as their choice for the top accolade.

Many local groups including The Zodiacs, the allotments holders and the gardening club were involved. Vivien joked that she thought Louise Nixon of Dandelion Gifts in Church Street had the hardest job as judge she had to taste all the produce including some potent sloe gin!

The many visitors also enjoyed delicious W.I. home baking provided by a team led by Pauline Bate, whose baking was highly commended in this year’s Cheshire Show.

SHAKESPEARE CABARET ON STAGE IN KINGSLEY A bite-sized version of some of Shakespeare’s famous and favourite scenes will be woven together with music into an explosive, hilarious production staged by Kingsley Players for four nights, Wednesday 21- Saturday 24 October.

Specially adapted for the Players, Bite-size Shakespeare – A Cabaret features the Bard’s best-loved characters from Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet.

Tickets cost £7/£8, with £5 concessions available on Wednesday and Thursday. They may be booked in advance through the website www. kingsleyplayers.co.uk or by ringing the box office on 07925 516760.

HELSBY HILLSIDE WI SEPTEMBER MONTHLY MEETING REPORT How to cover 1,000 years of history in 1 hour! That is what Miss Yvonne Albon did when she spoke to Helsby Hillside WI at their September monthly meeting. She spoke on the “History of St. John”. Coming through the Crusades to become one of the leading First Aid Organisations.

An excellent and very informed speaker, who is also a Dame of the Order of St. John. Her talk was greatly enjoyed.

Arrangements were made to go to Ten Pin Bowling on Sept. 21st and Crown Green Bowling on Sept. 31st. Skittles date for October to be arranged. Also announced was the Weaver Vale Autumn Group Meeting on October 15th in Frodsham Community Centre at 12-30. Tickets were on sale at £5 which includes Soup and Sweet lunch and a Speaker. This time the talk is entitled “Storm Tossed Lady” and will be given by Sue Hickman-Marsay.

A fond farewell was said to Mrs Angela Green, one of our founder members and a former President who is leaving the village after very many years. Angela was thanked for being such a good friend to Helsby Hillside WI. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the Community Centre at 7-30pm. Next month, October, the speaker will be Kay Bashford. Subject ”Hats and the people who wore them”.

After everyone had enjoyed a fine afternoon of golf, the highlight of the day was the presentation of the 337th Powered Wheelchair Appeal wheelchair to Johnny Barber from Lymm. Johnny is studying for his “A” levels at Altrincham High School and is hoping to go on to University to study maths. His new wheelchair will help him to be independent there and also allow him to continue with his hobby of singing in a choir called “Simply Voices” which perform at a variety of charity events.

Winners of the golf competition on the day were Rachel and Hugo Steven and Hazel Jones from Helsby and the MEGA player – singer Joe Wall.

Thanks go to all our supporters and the MEGA team who helped raise over £2,000 for the Appeal.
