I ignored them. Then I received an email confessing to an “operational error” that meant I had overpaid my tax and was due a refund. I deleted it.

Not a fan of wallpaper but bored with paint? Use your imagination and ingenuity to create all sorts of interesting decorative effects on your walls, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell
Hard-wearing, longlasting, easy to clean and potentially highly decorative, tiles are often overlooked as a wallcovering other than for the inevitable bathroom or kitchen splashback. Yet they are available in as great a variety of colours and patterns as wallpaper, and can have just as much impact. They can be super-shiny or matt and understated; sleek and machinemade or wobbly, rustic and handmade; even and smooth, or knobbly and textured; even digitally printed with your own designs. Something to suit every style. Why not consider tiled walls for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms and utility rooms? Given their fabulous decorative potential, they may also work as part of a living area, too. Just how a tiled area looks – whether it’s a whole wall or
a small splashback – depends on a variety of factors. Their colour, pattern and texture are most important, of course, but size (from huge slabs to tiny mosaic) matters, too, while shape also plays a part. While most tiles are square or rectangular, other shapes are available, and can create complex patterns that have enormous impact. Your chosen layout also makes a difference, whether it’s a simple grid, an offset design (also known as brick bond), herringbone, pinwheel or random. Will you add borders or mix two or more patterns? How wide apart will your tiles be spaced? And what colour grout will you choose? Tiling may not be as simple as it first seems – but it can certainly be rewarding.
Timber panelling Wood panelling keeps heat in and noises out, and is great for disguising wonky walls and. More than that, though, it has fabulous warmth and character. Choose fielded panelling for classic feel, or simple tongue and groove for that cosy, country look. Leave natural or paint to co-ordinate
DIFFereNT TyPeS oF TILeS Ceramic: relatively inexpensive, don’t need sealing or polishing and are easily wiped clean. Porcelain: heavier and harder-wearing than ceramic, and can often be used outdoors as well as inside. Surface effects include natural stone, metals, concrete, fabric, wood and leather. Glass: clear, frosted and coloured, and have a lovely, translucent appearance. Mosaics: small ceramic, glass, stone, metal or even shell tiles, usually supplied on a backing sheet and employed for small areas of decorative effect. Natural stone: includes limestone, marble, granite and slate. Can be porous, so check whether they need to be sealed before use.

Mirror
A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around and instantly make the room seem bigger. The larger the mirror, the thicker it needs to be, so it’s often a good idea to get professional help to attach it securely.
Polished plaster
A centuries-old Italian technique, also known as Venetian plaster, involves applying several thin coats of plaster and polishing with wax. The finished result boasts a lovely depth of colour and can resemble marble, stone or suede.

Choose your fabric, line it, stretch it, and staple it to battens fixed to the walls. There’s no way around it:

this traditional technique is expensive. It looks amazing, however, and is helpful in insulating against cold and noise.
Composites and laminates
They may seem dull, but in fact sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have decorative potential. As they are waterproof and require few joins, they make an especially good choice for bathrooms.
Leather
Costly but eye-catching and incredibly luxurious, leatherclad walls possess enormous character, while their patina, like that of a quality shoe, will develop over time. Apparently, they are even sound- and fireretardant.
Cork
Cork sheets and tiles offer many appealing qualities, from being warm and soft to
the touch to having insulating and soundproofing benefits. What’s more, they are highly environmentally-friendly. A range of modern colours, patterns and textures is available.
Sheet metal
Fancy an unusual wall installation? Then opt for sheets of metal – steel, copper or aluminium, say. Finishes include different textures, lasercut designs or even designer rust and, depending on their patina and arrangement, the end result could be either overtly industrial or sleek and upmarket. Short Story The Dare by Jackie Brewster “I dare you to eat one”. Cole said, holding out a shiny conker.

The twins had been collecting conkers as they scrambled through the darkening woods on their way home from swimming. Morgan liked conkers, but he also liked the spiky green casings that he prized them out of; his pockets were full of them.
“His eyes turned green and everything”. Morgan watched Cole closely. There were two things that his brother was scared of – zombies and mushrooms.
It was such a good dare that Morgan wished he’d thought of it. He was certain conkers were poisonous. And it wasn’t even Cole’s turn to set a dare. Just yesterday Cole had dared him to stroke Mrs Burgey’s mangy dog. Afterwards Cole had broken the first rule of Dare Club – that no one talks about Dare Club - and told their mother. She’d made Morgan take a shower, and it wasn’t even Sunday. Morgan had been biding his time, waiting to get his revenge. Cole couldn’t be allowed to get away with it, after all Morgan was the eldest by ten whole minutes. “Do you understand exactly what you’re asking?”. He said mysteriously, taking the conker from Cole. “Yeah”. Cole answered, unimpressed. “You know that conkers contain powerful magic don’t you?”. Morgan smiled thinly. Cole pulled a face. “Say’s who?”. “I saw it on You Tube”. Morgan lied, “This guy ate a conker on a full moon, and he turned into a zombie”.
“Tonight’s a full moon”. He glanced at the sky, “Just so you know what you’re asking”. “Rubbish”. Cole kicked the leaves, “That’s just werewolves”. “It’s werewolves too”. Morgan raised the conker to his lips. “Still dare me to eat it?”. Both boys stared hard at each other. Morgan shrugged, “It’s been nice knowing you”. He popped the conker into his mouth. Cole frowned. “You’ve got to swallow it”. Morgan indicted a need to sit down. The business of digesting conkers was arduous and shouldn’t be tackled while standing. Cole went to perch on a log, “Not there!”. Morgan spluttered, “It’s covered in toadstools”. Cole’s rapid inspection of the log gave Morgan just enough to time spit the conker into the leaves, and find what he needed from his pocket. “Now we’re sitting comfortably”. Morgan mumbled with gravity, “I will swallow”. The violent gagging sounds he made as he pretended to swallow impressed even him.
“Now we wait”. Morgan folded his arms and leaned back against the tree. The shadows grew longer and a flock of crows came home to roost. “This is boring”. Cole said, glancing at his watch. The chill evening air had just descended to the forest floor when Morgan chose his moment. He began to cough and shake. He clutched his stomach and moaned. He spat foamy dribble down his coat for dramatic effect. “The magic is beginning to take hold”. He cried, “Run Cole, run, while you still have the chance”. Cole laughed nervously, “Stop mucking around”. “The pain, the pain!”. Morgan cried, burying his face in his hands. Writhing in agony, he uttered an unearthly moan. Then he took his hands away to reveal himself transformed. His huge zombie eyes were green and covered in gruesome spikes. Cole turned the colour of concrete, shrieked (like a girl thought Morgan) and ran off, leaving his swimming kit behind.

Yes, these evergreen plants have great garden potential so take a look at some of the great ways that conifers can be used in gardens, with several hundred different cultivars of conifer to choose from in the UK, there really is one to suit every situation!

Cake and Bake Apple & Blackberry Crumble Cake Making the most of seasonal fruit, this moist cake is delicious as a warming pudding served with custard or you can leave it to cool and enjoy it with a mid morning cup of coffee. Ingredients: • 350g self-raising flour • 2tsp ground mixed spice • 175g unsalted butter, chilled and diced, plus extra for greasing • 150g golden caster sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 2 large dessert apples, peeled cored and diced • 200g blackberries • 50g Demerara sugar • 50g roasted hazelnuts, chopped
TIP
You can vary the fruit filling, try pears with blueberries or thickly sliced plums and replace the hazelnuts with chopped blanched almonds.
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, Fan 170C, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Grease a 20cm x 24cm cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper. 2. Sift the flour and mixed spice into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles rough breadcrumbs. Remove 175g of the crumble mixture to a second bowl and set aside. 3. Stir the caster sugar and beaten egg into the larger amount of crumble to make a soft and slightly sticky dough. Press into an even layer in the base of the cake tin using floured hands. Scatter over the diced apple and berries. 4. Stir the Demerara sugar and chopped hazelnuts into the rest of the crumble mixture and spoon over the fruit, pressing down gently.
5. Place the cake tin on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 40-50 mins until the cake is risen and golden brown (cover the top of the cake loosely with foil after 30 mins if it starts to Makes 8 Slices overbrown). Grand Firework Display and Fun Fair taking place on Friday the 7th November at Helsby Community Sports Club. Food available and the bar will be open at the venue with entertainment carrying on in the main function room after the display. Parking is available at site and people are being asked to arrive early to ease the rush just before the display begins. The display is due to start at 7.45pm. Barabara Walters Receives an Award Congratulations to Barbara Walters who has just received an award for her lifetime dedication and commitment to the Royal Academy of Dance. Next year Barbara will have been teaching dance as ‘Davies School of Dancing’ in Helsby for an amazing 55 years! ‘OVER BY CHRISTMAS’ Helsby and Frodsham were treated to this excellent performance on the 19th September and it was lovely to see so many people turn out to support it. Performed on the railway platforms, ‘Over By Christmas’, written by Helen Newall and original music by Matt Baker, featured words and songs of the war. Capturing the spirit of optimism and patriotism of those leaving their loved ones, perhaps never to see them again. A community choir of ‘soldiers’, ‘nurses’ and their families recreated this poignant and historic moment, accompanied by live musicians. Local primary schools, Helsby Hillside and Hornsmill performed in Helsby and St Luke’s, Overton and Weavervale performed at Frodsham Railway Station and they were all a delight to watch. Very enjoyable!

Frodsham Gift Voucher Scheme Following the success of previous years, Frodsham Town Council is delighted to announce the 2014 Frodsham Gift Voucher scheme. How to apply All applicants must reapply again this year so if you are a resident of Frodsham who will be 70 on or before 31 January 2015, please complete the application form below and return it to the Town Council Office, Footman’s Cottage, Castle Park or to any Town Councillor on or before Friday 7 November 2014. Vouchers will be delivered on or before 29 November 2014 in time for the Christmas Festival. A full list of participating businesses, clubs and societies where vouchers may be exchanged will be published in November. Voucher Scheme rules 1 - That at 31 January 2015 the applicant is 70 years of age or older and has only made this one application for a voucher. 2 - That the applicant is a resident of Frodsham and is shown as a resident of Frodsham on the current electoral roll. 3 - That Frodsham Town Council (FTC) will make checks to confirm the validity of certain applications and reserves the right to require proof of age and residency to support any application 4 - FTC reserves the right to refuse to issue a voucher to anyone for any reason where they believe that is necessary to preserve the integrity of the scheme. 5 - FTC’s responsibility is to issue the voucher only - it is a matter for the local business, groups and societies whether they will accept them. 6 - Vouchers will be issued by 29 November 2014.
