Dear Friends, This month Roger from Dunham Hill Smithy celebrates a huge 20 years in business congratulations! Clare (p5) from Frodsham Flowers on Main Street (formerly Bloomsbury’s) has completed her make-over of the shop and welcomes you to see her modern look, offering fresh ideas and beautiful floral designs for any occasion or gift. Our front cover this month is NYK Kitchens and mirror doors, Paul and his team offer a superb service so pop along to their showroom. Hillcrest Residential home now has a separate dementia zone. Hillcrest has traditionally been mainly a residential home, with just a few mild dementia clients mixed in. However the trend over the last few years has been for more dementia bed enquiries and as a result the dementia residents were beginning to impact on the residential clients. So, Hillcrest has created two zone areas - Residential and Dementia, that will be more or less self-contained. This is better for their dementia clients, as they will be offered more targeted care and activities, and will also be better for the residential clients who will continue to enjoy the more informal, home-like atmosphere of a traditional care home. The Wedding Room at Les Harris Jewellers This year sees the shop celebrating the future of Les Harris Jewellers as daughter Niki and Son in law Andrew are taking over running the family Jewellers. After 44 years in Frodsham, Les and Carolyn are looking to retire, however they will still be on hand with their lifetime of experience but will leave the day to day running of the shop to Niki and Andy. Growing up with a family all in the Jewellery trade it was an inevitable step for Niki. So after studying at University and an extensive 10 year sales background, she is thrilled to be taking over the family business. Andrew has left a career in the technical plastics sector and is embracing the new challenge of learning the trade and is eager to promote the business and ensure success continues for the next generations! There are exciting times ahead for Les Harris Jewellers starting with the new Wedding Room Showroom which was officially opened at end of September by Frodsham Mayoress, Sara Wakefield. Niki explained that they wanted to free up more space in the front showroom and open up the back room to show off the beautiful sandstone wall of the 350 year old cottage. There are further changes on the way as Sue Queeding who has been with the shop for 35 years is also retiring next month. She is a great asset to business and will be greatly missed, hopefully still helping out at busy periods though! As the weather turns cooler Blakemere Village is preparing to warm those chilly days with autumn fun for the whole family. Blakemere’s annual Scarecrow Trail from Saturday October 19, to Thursday October 31, this year will be bigger and better than ever with dozens of colourful characters to spot and fantastic prizes to be won. Tastes so good... ROAST SEA BASS WITH A LEMON & GARLIC CRUST
Perfect for a simple lunch or a dinner party with friends, this main course is an easy crowd pleaser, looks great on the plate and is a wonderful dish to serve with vegetables or salad alike. Equipment: Small processor or mortar and pestle Ingredients :
Oven: Gas Mark 5, 190째c
4 skinned fillets sea bass, washed under running water 3 unwaxed lemons 4 cloves garlic Small bunch of washed fresh parsley 25g butter 30g wholemeal bread 50ml extra virgin olive oil Salt & pepper
Method: Brush undersides with olive oil and season fish all over with salt and pepper. Zest one of the lemons and squeeze juice. Wedge the other lemon for garnish. Whizz garlic with lemon juice and zest. Once no more large pieces can be seen, add the parsley, bread and butter to the processor.

Quite quickly you should produce a moist and very tasty breadcrumb mixture. Press this mixture firmly onto the upper side of the fillets. Roast for approximately 20 minutes, or until the crust is brown. Serve with whatever takes your fancy!

Make sure the joint is clean, and pop the item onto newspaper. Use a nail to dab a little onto one of the joints. Bring both pieces together, wipe the excess with acetone and stand for 24 hours.

The ubiquitous giant online auction site eBay may seem a relatively simple beast. Yet beneath the shiny shop front there are a host of hidden secrets enabling you to pay less. It all stems from the fact eBay’s a mammoth marketplace with millions of goods and hordes of buyers competing for the same items. It’s all too easy to get sucked into bidding wars, with your finger quivering on the mouse, and then just overpaying at the last minute. Yet a host of hidden tools and websites allow you to hone in on hidden uber-deals overlooked by rival bidders. Here are my top eBay buyer’s tricks… Exploit speiling mistakes Typos and eeroars on eBay are incredibubbly common. Of course, that meanz fewer people searching for things, so the prices you get are rocc bottom. A host of mistake spotters, such as www.fatfingers.co.uk, www.goofbid.com and www.bargainchecker.com trawl eBay for all possible spelling mishtake combinations which have lower prices. While we’re on it, if you’re selling remember to use spell check. Find collection only bargains near you
Results can be powerful, such as this from my site user Jen_Jen1985: “Had been looking for a double buggy, but most ended up selling for around £40. I found one via the Local Deals tool and ended up winning it for £1.24!” Bag no-bid 99p items Often sellers start auctions at 99p or less, hoping a tug of war will break out between buyers. Many items go unspotted and stay at these super-low prices. It’s possible to scour eBay just for these with 99p spotter www.lastminute-auction.com. Double-check delivery charges, as some sellers hope to recoup costs by charging little extra. Though eBay has now set maximum delivery charges for many categories. Do you need it? Pet’s Corner - Gerbils gerbils Perhaps a better alternative to hamsters, Gerbils make good little pets for slightly older children and because they’re not nocturnal you won’t be bothered so much by noises in the night. They do, however nibble constantly and like to shred things for bedding. Their inquisitive and active personalities mean that they’re not as ideal for much younger owners as they very much enjoy human company but need a bit of control, especially as they like to tunnel! Note that tunnel systems designed for hamsters won’t suit gerbils as they like to create them themselves. They are super pets as they rarely bite unless they are stressed or provoked and enjoy being played with. Gerbils are typically between 6 and 12 inches long including their tails which actually make up almost half of their total length. Indeed they also produce very little odour which also renders them great for a household pet.

THIS MOTOR is more budget than bling; but that in itself is no problem. The new hatchback from ŠKODA has space for five-up and, in 1.6 TDI guise, can extract up to 64.2mpg out of a tank. Also, with emissions of just 114g/km, the car is cost-effective to run as a company vehicle. When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czech-made motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. The plastic trim is disappointing compared with, say, the more executivefocused ŠKODA Superb but, in its favour the flagship ‘Elegance’ grade, on test here, does come stacked with kit. Key features include cruise control; electrically heated door mirrors, multi-function steering wheel controls, Bluetooth and air conditioning. It’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel
too; the height adjustable seating and adaptable reach/rake steering column makes this possible. If you opt for the Elegance model you’ll also benefit from 16-inch alloys, cornering front fog lamps, rear electric windows, and chrome interior detailing. But no matter which variant of the Rapid you drive, you’ll find access to the boot easy and the load space square and practical in this, the seventh car in ŠKODA’s award-winning range. Crucially, With Benefit in Kind (BIK) ratings from only 14 percent, the ŠKODA Rapid is expected to provide a shot in the arm to the brand’s rapidly growing fleet sales. An Evening of Chocolate Indulgence Hosted by Thorntons Friday 22nd November Forget fitting into that Christmas party dress for an evening, and be among the first to sample Thorntons new stock of choc, enjoy demonstrations, blind tastings, a quiz (we’re all good at eating chocolate, but how much do we actually know about it?!), goody bags for all and chance to stock up on Christmas treats for your loved ones at discount prices. The evening will be held at Kelsall Community Centre and hosted by the chocolate-lovers at Thornton’s, Cheshire Oaks. Tickets are priced at £10 (includes quiz, a free drink, icing demo, more chocolate than you should eat in a few hours, plus a goody bag to take home). There will also be a cash bar with chocolately drinks - and other drinks in case you’ve had enough sugar by then - and a raffle with Thornton’s prizes of course! All proceeds from this event will go to the Neuromuscular Centre in Winsford, a charity that provides a range of unique services with the sole aim of improving the quality of life for adults with muscular dystrophy, a severe and debilitating muscle wasting condition. We are already fully booked and have stall holders selling a wide range of hand crafted items that would make ideal Christmas gifts, including bags, jewellery, glass, wood, stone and textile items. Entry is free and there will be demonstrations throughout the day and a chance to have a go yourself, as well as refreshments and lots of activities for children and young people. We will be transforming our Church garden into a craft garden for the event and are pleased that Helsby High School’s knitting club and 4th Frodsham Scout Group will be involved in the project. FRODSHAM’S CLIMATE OF CHANGE The folks of Frodsham Transition Initiative are always on the lookout for examples of new local business in the Frodsham economy. These developments mean new livelihoods, they generate training opportunities, they enhance local circulation of income and they enable all sorts of new creative ideas to come to fruition. In short, they meet the needs of Frodsham people better. One study has shown that for every £1 spent in national retail outlets, 14p is re circulated into the local economy. By using independent shops, it is estimated 52p in the pound is returned to the local economy thereby enhancing and strengthening the local circulation of money, services and produce. It also leads to strengthening bonds in the community and ultimately increases community well-being. It seems a pretty good outcome for merely altering your shopping habits. Frodsham Transition Initiative is one small part of the international Transition Network movement. Current projects include the Singing for Pleasure choir, Cycling, Healthy Eating, local tree planting and lots more.

Riotous comedy on stage in Kingsley Kingsley Players are back on stage again this October for a four night run of the riotous comedy ‘The Servant of Two Masters’. The original version by the 18th century Italian, Carlo Goldoni, was the inspiration for Richard Bean’s award-winning adaptation ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ which is still playing to packed houses in the West End. Director Lynn Pegler explains: “Our version of the story is a fantastic English translation by David Turner and Paul Lapworth, first staged in London in 1968 with Tommy Steele in the main role. The story is set in Venice and follows the exploits of the servant Truffaldino who lands himself jobs with two different people at the same time. Not all the complications are of his own making – unknown to him, one of his ‘masters’ is in fact a woman in disguise and the other master is her lover. Enjoy the exploits of ‘The Servant of Two Masters’ on stage at Kingsley Community Centre, nightly at 7.30pm, Wednesday 16th – Saturday 19th October. Helsby Golf Club recently held their annual charity fundraising MEGA (Merseyside Entertainers Golfing Association) Day and once again it was a great success raising £2000. The day comprised of golf with a number of the entertainers followed by a meal in the clubhouse, presentation of powered wheelchairs to local deserving youngsters and topped off with fantastic entertainment by our guests led by the inimitable Ricky Tomlinson (aka Jim Royle from the Royle Family). Ricky was joined by his fellow entertainers comedian Mick Miller, guitarist Garry Murphy, singer Joe Wall and music duo The Chimes. The guys really gave us top class entertainment and our sincere thanks go out to them all for their support. Funds raised leading up to and during the event allowed us to make 2 more powered wheelchair presentations - the club’s 315th & 316th since the Powered Wheelchair crusade began. The first presentation was to Jordan Duke aged 16 from Prenton on the Wirral. The second presentation was to Connor Webb aged 11 from Widnes. The day also saw some great golf and everyone taking part commented on how much they enjoyed the course. Thanks to everyone who took part for their fantastic support
