With celebrations to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, the humble but striking poppy will once again be evident as a symbol of hope and remembrance. But what is its history? Over the four years that the Great War raged, the fields of Flanders in Belgium that saw much of the bloody trench warfare were decimated. But like some miracle of life triumphing over death, out of this devastation grew hundreds of field poppies. Part of the papaver family (papaver rhoeas), the Flanders Poppy, as it came to be known, thrived in the barrenness – its bright red colour echoing the bloodshed and a perfect symbol of hope for the future.

she promptly went out to Wannamaker’s – a department store in New York – and bought all the artificial poppies they had. She then sold them as souvenirs of remembrance under the banner ‘keep the faith’. Due to Moina’s efforts, the National American Legion adopted the poppy as their symbol, agreeing to wear it on Armistice Day, 11th November. While attending an American Legion Convention in 1920, Anna Guérin, a member of the French YWCA, saw the poppy not only as a global symbol of remembrance but also as a way of raising funds. She decided to start mass producing artificial poppies to sell as badges in France. The proceeds would be used to help war widows and orphans.

Howson had received the Military Cross during the First World War and had subsequently set up The Disabled Society to help provide employment for disabled veterans. His initial staff were five disabled exsoldiers. Today there are two poppy manufacturers in the UK – The Poppy Factory in Richmond (the original poppy factory relocated) and The Lady Haig Poppy Factory in Edinburgh. The Scottish poppy is slightly different to the English in that it has four petals instead of three and no leaf. Both are staffed by exservicemen and women and produce millions of poppies annually. The Poppy Factory also does free tours which are open to all. Along with the crosses and wreaths that will be placed on war memorials across the country on Remembrance Sunday this centenary year, armies of volunteers will sell millions of poppies in the run up to 11th November.

Shaun s Dream is Comming True...

HELSBY METHODIST CHURCH

On 3 th uly Shaun Garner aged 9 was diagnosed with LL ( cute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia). e underwent chemotherapy treatment over a three year period, enduring weekly theatre trips for particular tests. In 5 Shaun got the all clear and went into remission for two years until in ay 7 he was diagnosed with relapsed LL at 5 years old. s a family we were told Shaun would need to have a bone marrow transplant and we began nding a match immediately, we didn t need to use an anonymous donor as ebecca Shaun s sister was thankfully a match. Shaun spent his 6th birthday in isolation on the one arrow Transplant Ward in anchester Children s ospital on the 7th September 7 and on the th September 7 ebecca started the one arrow Transplantation which lasted for six & a half hours. On the 9th September 7 Shaun was given the bone marrow. The tests are now showing that the one arrow has worked against the leukaemia but is now working too much and attacking Shaun s body causing G (Graft versus host disease) which affects Shaun s skin, eyes and all other organs. Shaun was offered a dream holiday from a charity called Give ids The World, however, the support fee and health insurance had to be fundraised and proven to the charity that we had done so. We held a fundraising event with live music, food, raf es, bingo and ebecca did rave the Shave and donated her hair to the rincess s trust. yan a member of staff at Sutton all golf club and ebecca s anc also shaved his hair and beard off to raise money. uge thanks to Sutton all Golf Club s members and their ama ing staff we raised 35 through generous sponsors. Through all the fundraising this means Shaun and his immediate family are able to accommodate Shaun s wishes and spend Christmas in Florida. is dream is coming true. 94
