This month in pictures...
The clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in very quickly but what a lovely Autumn we’ve had this year. The countdown is now on for Helsby’s very first fun-filled Christmas event for all the family, which is being held on Saturday 3rd December. A dedicated group of Helsby residents have been working extremely hard for months to make this event happen, join in the fun and help make ‘Ho Ho Helsby’ an outstanding success. Take a look at the community pages for further details and many other local events to attend, it’s going to be a busy run up to Christmas! The White Lion in Alvanley closed on the 24th October for a three week makeover. Work is well underway and I can’t wait to see the results when it re-opens on the 17th November. If you belong to the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964), have a chuckle at the article on page 46 with reference to current day versions of favorite TV characters. Victor Meldrew of One Foot in the Grave fame, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances, Rupert Rigsby - Rising Damp and Tom and Barbara from The Good Life. We Try Nissan’s Bonkers BladeGlider BladeGlider offers a drift mode, similar to that found on the Focus RS, for sideways fun – yet more technology debuting here that is likely to filter down to other Nissans. The BladeGlider did feel softly sprung, though, more hot hatch than sports car over the kerbs. But most importantly it was great fun – and, with the instant torque available from those electric motors, it felt swift too.
As we hit the back straight of the twisting kart track in the middle of a shanty town in Brazil, the wail of the concept car’s electric motors reaches a crescendo.
With two 174bhp electric motors, independently powering each rear wheel, the BladeGlider is good for nearly 120mph and 60mph in under five seconds.
It’s banshee-like in pitch and would rival a hover bike from Star Wars in tone – this is noise like no electric car that’s gone before it, and it’s pointing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nissan.
It’s been built in conjunction with F1 experts Williams Advanced Engineering and features an unusual threeseater layout where both passengers sit behind and either side of the driver.
We’ve come to Rio de Janeiro to experience this mad Batmobile-like sports car concept, dubbed the BladeGlider.
Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed a drive of the multimillion pound concept car; however, we did get to experience it from the passenger seat.
With a narrow front track and aerodynamically designed body that widens like an arrow to the rear, the concept car takes design cues from the Delta Wing Le Mans racer of 2012.
Even from here it’s clear the BladeGlider offers a completely unique driving experience. Those two front wheels and the wide-track rear make for a planted and agile ride. On the tiny test track it whipped between corners with a whiff of tyre-smoking oversteer when our exuberant test driver got playful.
It’s not supercar fast, but will push you back into the sports seats and throw you around enough to induce a whiff of travel sickness. There’s currently no word on range, though – which we’d guess means it’s currently pretty poor. Unfortunately, the chances of being able to order a BladeGlider from your local dealer any time soon is highly unlikely. This is just one of two produced and they’re likely to be the last. Well, in this form at least. So you might be wondering what the point is? Well, Nissan says that’s simple, really: they want to make people realise electrification doesn’t mean dull, and a sports car concept as bonkers as this proves otherwise.

Paul had been left in charge. Angela, who was the first aider, had abandoned him to deal with a couple of incidents. He might have known this would happen, the Parish Council bonfire night never passed without incident. Paul was good at turning sausages but not so keen on customer service.
“That’s not the point,” the man snapped. “My girl likes to look nice and her hair costs a lot of money.”
He could see Angela through the crowds at the craft stall but could not attract her attention. She seemed to be busy with a distressed Dotty Bagshaw, who had an unpleasant yellow substance all over her face and head. It dripped down the front of her tabard. Poor Dot looked like she’d been hit with a particularly runny custard pie. “Welcome to Fry Porks,” Paul said, remembering his training. “How many would you like?” “I don’t want any,” the man said gruffly. “I’m here to make a complaint.” “What seems to be the problem?” Paul asked nervously. Complaints were Angela’s department. “My lady friend over there was sold a hotdog with too much mustard.” “That was probably by Angela,” Paul said, feeling relieved. “Now she has mustard in her hair.”
“I see,” Paul said. “Looks like the matter’s been taken care of.”
“I’m sorry, your girl?” Paul asked. No one could accuse Dotty of being a girl; she had six grown-up grandchildren. If she was anyone’s ‘girl’ surely that would be her husband Derek? “Yes, my girlfriend,” the man said. “She’ll have to go back to the salon to have all those extensions taken out. It’s not cheap.” Paul looked again at Dot. He’d never noticed anything special about her hair before, but ladies did seem to spend more on one haircut than he spent on his entire wardrobe. “What do you want me to do about it?” Paul said. “An apology would be nice,” the man said. “I’m sorry?” Paul said. “Not to me, you idiot,” the man said. “To my girlfriend.” Paul had never liked being called an idiot. “How about I pass your concerns on to the Chair of the Parish Council, Derek Bagshaw?” Paul stood up to his full height. “If you don’t know who that is, have a word with your so-called girlfriend, because she knows him extremely well.”

So what happened?” “Nothing,” Paul said innocently, returning his attention to the sausages. “Forget it.” “Looks like the fireworks are about to start.” Angela said.

Garden Fireworks by Pippa Greenwood
You may be planning a traditional display of fireworks on November 5th, but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks? At this time of year, there are still several stunning flowers that remind me of fireworks, such as the flamboyant red hot pokers or kniphofias, also known as torch lilies. Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ has a rich yellowy-orange colour while the smaller ‘Little Maid’ has ivory-yellow flower spikes and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ has blazing orangey-red flowers, while those of ‘Alcazar’ are bright red. Available in garden centres now, they do well if planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! Crocosmias help provide colour at this time of year, so take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpetshaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. The many varieties of crocosmia thrive in sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil. Pot-grown plants should be

Domestic and commercial Recipe for November. A wonderfully fragrant, mild to medium spiced ‘comfort food’ curry. Thai Massaman To serve 4 generous portions you will need; 1x Massaman Spice Blend / 750g to 1kg of your main ingredient eg Meat/Fish/Vegetables 200ml Water / 400ml Coconut Milk /A handful of fresh coriander / 1 medium diced onion / 1 diced cooked potato / A handful of crushed peanuts / 1 small chopped red chilli (optional)
Method.
Empty your Massaman spice blend into a pan, add 200ml cold water, the diced onion, and your 400ml coconut milk and simmer for 3/4 minutes. Add your main ingredient, cover and cook gently either on your hob or in your oven. For the last 10 minutes, add the potato, and cook uncovered to reduce the sauce. Right at the end add fresh coriander to taste and top with the crushed peanuts. To increase the spice stir in a small chopped red chilli, and serve. Would go well with any combination of the following - Jasmine rice, Shrimp Crackers, Noodles, Coconut Chutney. Winter Opening Hours: Mon - Tues - Closed. Chilli Bean Nachos Serves 4
Ready in 30 minutes
This is perfect filling finger food for a bonfire night snack or tv dinner. For a meatier version add some diced chorizo sausage when frying the onions.
Ingredients: • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1tbsp mild chilli powder • 1/2 tsp each ground cumin and ground coriander • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 1/2 tsp sugar • 400g can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in the chilli powder, cumin and coriander and fry for 1 minute then add the chopped tomatoes. Simmer for 8-10 minutes until thickened. Stir in the sugar and kidney beans and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes until the beans are piping hot. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Arrange the nachos on four heatproof plates and spoon over the bean mixture.

Scatter over the jalapeno peppers and top with the grated cheese. Place under a medium hot grill for 1-2 minutes until the cheese begins to melt. Serve immediately with guacamole.

Stone or ceramic tiles, engineered or laminate floorboards, rubber and good quality vinyl are all suitable – simply soften with rugs around your sofas and chairs to create the framework for a separate ‘living’ area. Who doesn’t love the idea of living in a light, bright and airy open-plan space? Katherine Sorrell explains how to get the most out of it. To ensure an open-plan room looks good and functions brilliantly, carefully plan how you’ll use the space – for cooking, eating, entertaining, working, relaxing and so on – then divide it into appropriate areas. These zones can be created with changes of level, but generally it’s through use of flooring, colour and pattern, lighting and the positioning of furniture. Kitchens/halls need splashproof flooring that can be mopped, while sitting areas should feel inviting and comfortable, so use different

One option in an open-plan room is to use tones of one colour, going from light at one end to darker at the other. In long, thin spaces, painting the end walls in a deeper shade makes them appear closer, thus improving the proportions, while a neutral scheme throughout can have matching accents of a brighter colour – say, a rug in the living area, glasses on the dining table and kitchen accessories – for a smart and interesting look. Conventional furniture may not work as well as expected in an open-plan space, so search for larger-than-average pieces that look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid placing
the seating around the edges, or spacing it too far apart, and group it so that sofas and chairs are sociable, either facing each other or creating a corner (modular units are good for this). Try to include an island or peninsular unit between the kitchen and the rest of the room. This gives a visual break between the two zones and lets the cook chat with family or guests. Kitchen manufacturers produce products that blend kitchen, dining and living functions, from cabinets that co-ordinate with free-standing storage to media units that incorporate a TV, to help design a space that blends easily from one zone to another. One final point: bear in mind that sound carries and if you’re eating dinner, watching TV or catching up on emails you won’t want to be disturbed by the extractor fan or the dishwasher. If possible, put your washing machine somewhere separate and buy super-quiet appliances. To give flexible lighting that can be turned up or down easily in dining and living areas, experts advise installing a range of circuits controlled by separate switches or dimmers, but this can involve disruption and extra expense. If you consider how rabbits eat in the wild, it’s clear that natural foods best support their delicate system, and help them to live longer. Here are some of the most nutritious foods to give your rabbit, as recommended by the RSPCA and PDSA. Hay Fresh hay that is dust-free should constitute the major part of your rabbit’s diet. It’s best to keep it away from their bedding though - perhaps in a hay rack attached to the side of the cage. It takes a long time to chew hay, and it’s this chewing action that also helps to keep their teeth down. Safe leafy greens Suitable vegetables and herbs should be washed to remove any pesticides, and provided daily. Your rabbit will appreciate variety, but bear in mind that some plants are poisonous to rabbits, so take care and get advice from the vet if you’re unsure. Root vegetables and fruit It’s a myth that carrots should make up a large part of your rabbit’s diet, as like fruit, carrots are high in sugar. They should be given as an occasional treat, and only in small quantities. Pellets The PDSA suggests one tablespoon of pellets or nuggets per day for your rabbit, or twice a day for larger rabbits weighing over 3.5kg.� Water Fresh drinking water should be available at all times, from a clean container. Rabbit drinking bottles that attach to the side of the cage are a good idea. They’re easy to clean and can be topped up quickly.

Are We Tired Of Shabby Chic? Not By A Long Chalk By Kate McLelland It’s a trend that has been going strong for over twenty years and there’s no sign of it disappearing just yet. ‘Shabby chic’ has been around since the 1990s, when holidaymakers returning from destinations such as Provence, Tuscany and Greece tried to recreate the weathered, sun-baked surfaces found in traditional Mediterranean buildings in their own homes, using specialist paint techniques. In recent years a growing interest in upcycling has created a healthy market for furniture painted in the shabby chic style. Dark brown wooden furniture has been unpopular for decades and upcyclers have been able to take advantage of this trend, buying pieces at knockdown prices, refurbishing them with chalk-based paints and selling them on for a profit on Gumtree, Ebay or Shpock.
1 Wash the furniture with clean, soapy water to remove any surface dirt, and allow to dry. Don’t be tempted to clean with wax, as this won’t provide a secure base for applying the paint. 2 When you’re aiming for a rustic style, the brush strokes can go in any direction. It’s usual to apply coats of paint in different colours to create a layered effect, and this is best achieved by using a lighter shade under or over a darker shade for contrast. 3 Allow at least an hour for the surface to dry then sand with very fine sandpaper. At this point you will be trying to create the look of furniture that has been painted many times and used so much that the paint has begun to rub off at the contact points, so sand only where you think the item would have been repeatedly touched (around handles or on the top and bottom corners of your piece). Don’t rush this part of the project, apply light pressure and start sanding in a place where the effect will be less visible.

Getting kids out for some fresh air isn’t always an easy task, particularly when the weather is miserable. If the promise of puddle jumping isn’t doing the trick, these ideas might tempt them into their coats and hats: • Cut a strip of sticky-backed plastic and secure it around your child’s wrist, sticky side out. Help them collect leaves to stick on to make an autumnal bracelet. • Collect autumn leaves to make a woodland picture when you get home. Use the leaves for the body of a hedgehog, owl or Gruffalo. • If you’d rather not stray too far from the house, why not set up a treasure hunt in the garden, with a pirate map and clues to follow? For treasure you could hide some chocolate coins or a small gift.

Decorate them with coloured tape or mix acrylic paint with PVA glue and paint them.

Doors Open at Frodsham Community Centre Frodsham Community Centre was fully open as planned at the end of August with the revised completion of the Door2Door Project at the end of October. Visitors and regular users to Frodsham Community Centre are being welcomed with new doors, a bright and light foyer with improved decorations and colour scheme. The improvements carry through to the Main Hall/Auditorium with a beautifully finished dance floor, new curtains and excellent emergency doors leading to the rear of the building. WEAVER VALE GROUP W.I. The Group consists of seven W.Is – Frodsham, Helsby, Sutton Weaver, Kingsley, Norley, Crowton and Acton Bridge. The Autumn Group meeting was held on Thursday 13th October at Frodsham Community Centre. Members present enjoyed a lunch of soup and delicious desserts, followed by a superb entertainer “Gabriela, the Ukulele Queen”. What a marvellous hour of fun, laughter and songs we had. As Gabriela explained, the ukulele is so popular now and she had an array of ukuleles in all shapes and sizes to show and play. She is a most accomplished artiste and musician. She made us laugh with her comedy stories, songs, and poems and is very clever at bringing members of the audience into her programme. We sang along with gusto and she �inished with a medley of George Formby songs. After much singing and laughter, we all left the Meeting in a very happy frame of mind. The photographic competition for the Hornsby Cup, which was six photos showing the progression of your garden throughout the summer, was judged by Helen Carey and won by Crowton W.I. Ellie is attempting a 24 hour row in aid of The Children’s Society My name is Ellie and I am in my second year studying for a degree in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Exeter, but have lived in Helsby all my life. My housemate and I have challenged ourselves to raise £2500 each for The Children’s Society, an amazing charity that improves the lives of over 1,000,000 disadvantaged children each year. They tackle child poverty and neglect, help families trapped in debt and fight to stop child sexual exploitation. To see more about what this incredible charity does visit the website http://childrenssociety.org.uk/ At present, my target is looking quite daunting, so from 12pm on Saturday 17th December until 12pm on Sunday 18th December I am attempting an individual 24-hour row on a Concept 2 rowing machine in order to raise the money for this worthy cause. I may point out this does include minimal breaks for when I inevitably need a wee or a bite to eat, but if I complete it, I would be setting a new British Record! Not only am I attempting the row I am also conducting weekly bake sales at my University rowing club and running many other events too! Winter Wedding Ball This years Brides Night out at Best Western Forest Hills Hotel took place on the 1st Oct. 110 ladies, nearly all in their wedding dresses – Oh what a night!! Kym Lawson and Helen Davenport, Sales Manager at Best Western Forest Hills Hotel, got together to put together the Winter Wedding Ball for 2016, and thanks to local companies support the night was a great success and raised £1287.50! Which was split equally between Halton Haven Hospice and Cancer Research. The night started with a wedding arrival drink, with cocktails throughout the night, and lots of Prosecco. There was plenty of dancing, a prize draw and throwing of the bouquet! Finishing the night with plenty of Dancing! The Hotel would like to thank the local companies for their support. The feedback was terrific, with all the ladies wanting the event again in 2017! Watch this space!

will be performing “Goodnight Mister Tom” as our 2016 Winter Production. This will be one of the first amateur productions of this play in the country. Set against the backdrop of the build up and ultimate declaration of the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom tells the story of sad, young William Beech who is evacuated from London to the English Countryside. William builds a remarkable and moving relationship with elderly recluse Tom Oakley. Goodnight Mister Tom is a tale of two broken souls at very different ends of the age scale that celebrates the value of love and proves that friendship knows no barriers. Goodnight Mister Tom will be performed at Frodsham Community Centre from Wednesday 30th November until Saturday 3rd December. Curtain up is at 7:30pm with an additional matinee performance at 2:30pm on the Saturday.
